Six open‐top chambers were installed on the shortgrass steppe in north‐eastern Colorado, USA from late March until mid‐October in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate how this grassland will be affected by rising atmospheric CO2. Three chambers were maintained at current CO2 concentration (ambient treatment), three at twice ambient CO2, or approximately 720 μmol mol?1 (elevated treatment), and three nonchambered plots served as controls. Above‐ground phytomass was measured in summer and autumn during each growing season, soil water was monitored weekly, and leaf photosynthesis, conductance and water potential were measured periodically on important C3 and C4 grasses. Mid‐season and seasonal above‐ground productivity were enhanced from 26 to 47% at elevated CO2, with no differences in the relative responses of C3/C4 grasses or forbs. Annual above‐ground phytomass accrual was greater on plots which were defoliated once in mid‐summer compared to plots which were not defoliated during the growing season, but there was no interactive effect of defoliation and CO2 on growth. Leaf photosynthesis was often greater in Pascopyrum smithii (C3) and Bouteloua gracilis (C4) plants in the elevated chambers, due in large part to higher soil water contents and leaf water potentials. Persistent downward photosynthetic acclimation in P. smithii leaves prevented large photosynthetic enhancement for elevated CO2‐grown plants. Shoot N concentrations tended to be lower in grasses under elevated CO2, but only Stipa comata (C3) plants exhibited significant reductions in N under elevated compared to ambient CO2 chambers. Despite chamber warming of 2.6 °C and apparent drier chamber conditions compared to unchambered controls, above‐ground production in all chambers was always greater than in unchambered plots. Collectively, these results suggest increased productivity of the shortgrass steppe in future warmer, CO2 enriched environments.  相似文献

Native tallgrass prairie in NE Kansas was exposed to elevated (twice ambient) or ambient atmospheric CO2 levels in open-top chambers. Within chambers or in adjacent unchambered plots, the dominant C4 grass, Andropogon gerardii, was subjected to fluctuations in sunlight similar to that produced by clouds or within canopy shading (full sun > 1500 μmol m−2 s−1 versus 350 μmol m−2 s−1 shade) and responses in gas exchange were measured. These field experiments demonstrated that stomatal conductance in A. gerardii achieved new steady state levels more rapidly after abrupt changes in sunlight at elevated CO2 when compared to plants at ambient CO2. This was due primarily to the 50% reduction in stomatal conductance at elevated CO2, but was also a result of more rapid stomatal responses. Time constants describing stomatal responses were significantly reduced (29–33%) at elevated CO2. As a result, water loss was decreased by as much as 57% (6.5% due to more rapid stomatal responses). Concurrent increases in leaf xylem pressure potential during periods of sunlight variability provided additional evidence that more rapid stomatal responses at elevated CO2 enhanced plant water status. CO2-induced alterations in the kinetics of stomatal responses to variable sunlight will likely enhance direct effects of elevated CO2 on plant water relations in all ecosystems.  相似文献

Images of chlorophyll fluorescence emitted at wavelengths above and below 700 nm were recorded from leaf sections of C4 species using confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM). We investigated species exhibiting both NAD-malic enzyme (NAD-ME) C4 photosynthesis and NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME) C4 photosynthesis. Comparing LSM fluorescence of leaf sections with flow-cytometrically determined fluorescence from individual chloroplasts revealed that LSM fluorescence was distorted by the optical properties of leaf sections. Leaf section fluorescence, when corrected by transmission data derived from light transmission images, agreed with flow cytometry data. The corrected LSM fluorescence yielded information on the distribution of the individual photosystems in the C4 leaf sections: PSII concentrations in bundle sheath cells were elevated in NAD-ME species but diminished in most of the NADP-ME species investigated. The NADP-ME species, Arundinella hirta, however, showed normal PSII and increased PSI concentration in bundle sheath chloroplasts. Finally, a gradient of PSI was observed within the bundle sheath cells from Euphorbia maculata.  相似文献

Abstract. It is important to know how increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 will affect native vegetation. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of elevated CO2 concentrations on species composition in a tallgrass prairie kept at a high water level (730 mm of water in a 2000 mm soil profile) and a low water level (660 mm of water in 2000 mm). 16 cylindrical plastic chambers were placed on the prairie to maintain two levels of CO2 (ambient or twice ambient) during two growing seasons in 1989 and 1990. Frequency of species was determined on 25 July 1989 and on 5 and 10 October 1990. At the beginning of the study, Poa pratensis (Kentucky bluegrass), the dominant C3 species, had the highest frequency of 43.3%, but decreased with time. However, at the end of the experiment and under the high soil-water level, there were more P. pratensis plants in the elevated CO2 treatment (frequency: 13.5%) than in the ambient CO2 treatment (1.0%). Under the low soil water regime, the reverse occurred (frequencies: 3.6% and 11.0% for high and low CO2, respectively). The frequency of major C4 plants, Andropogon gerardii (big bluestem), A. scoparius (little bluestem) and Sorghastrum nutans (Indian grass) was not affected by CO2. However, water did affect their frequency. Under low water, the frequency of A. gerardii decreased between 1989 and 1990. Under both soil moisture levels, the frequencies of S. nutans and A. scoparius increased. At the end of the study, Indian grass grown with high water had the highest frequency of all species on the prairie (frequency at the end of the study in October, 1990, of 44.4% and 47.4% for the high and low CO2 levels, respectively). Unlike Indian grass, little bluestem grew better under low water conditions than under high water conditions. These results suggest that, if the climate becomes drier, A. scoparius will flourish more than S. nutans or A. gerardii, and P. pratensis may die out. Elevated CO2 might not increase survival of C3 plants under dry conditions, if temperatures are too high for them.  相似文献

Grasses with the C3 photosynthetic pathway are commonly considered to be more nutritious host plants than C4 grasses, but the nutritional quality of C3 grasses is also more greatly impacted by elevated atmospheric CO2 than is that of C4 grasses; C3 grasses produce greater amounts of nonstructural carbohydrates and have greater declines in their nitrogen content than do C4 grasses under elevated CO2. Will C3 grasses remain nutritionally superior to C4 grasses under elevated CO2 levels? We addressed this question by determining whether levels of protein in C3 grasses decline to similar levels as in C4 grasses, and whether total carbohydrate : protein ratios become similar in C3 and C4 grasses under elevated CO2. In addition, we tested the hypothesis that, among the nonstructural carbohydrates in C3 grasses, levels of fructan respond most strongly to elevated CO2. Five C3 and five C4 grass species were grown from seed in outdoor open‐top chambers at ambient (370 ppm) or elevated (740 ppm) CO2 for 2 months. As expected, a significant increase in sugars, starch and fructan in the C3 grasses under elevated CO2 was associated with a significant reduction in their protein levels, while protein levels in most C4 grasses were little affected by elevated CO2. However, this differential response of the two types of grasses was insufficient to reduce protein in C3 grasses to the levels in C4 grasses. Although levels of fructan in the C3 grasses tripled under elevated CO2, the amounts produced remained relatively low, both in absolute terms and as a fraction of the total nonstructural carbohydrates in the C3 grasses. We conclude that C3 grasses will generally remain more nutritious than C4 grasses at elevated CO2 concentrations, having higher levels of protein, nonstructural carbohydrates, and water, but lower levels of fiber and toughness, and lower total carbohydrate : protein ratios than C4 grasses.  相似文献

Field-grown spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Dragon) was exposed to ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations (1.5 and 2 times ambient) in open-top chambers. Contents of non-structural carbohydrates were analysed enzymatically in leaves, stems and ears six times during the growing season. The impact of elevated CO2 on wheat carbohydrates was non-significant in most harvests. However, differences in the carbohydrate contents due to elevated CO2 were found in all plant compartments. Before anthesis, at growth stage (GS) 30 (the stem is 1 cm to the shoot apex), the plants grown in elevated CO2 contained significantly more water soluble carbohydrates (WSC), fructans, starch and total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) in the leaves in comparison with the plants grown in ambient CO2. It is hypothesised that the plants from the treatments with elevated CO2 were sink-limited at GS30. After anthesis, the leaf WSC and TNC contents of the plants from elevated CO2 started to decline earlier than those of the plants from ambient CO2. This may indicate that the leaves of plants grown in the chambers with elevated CO2 senesced earlier. Elevated CO2 accelerated grain development: 2 weeks after anthesis, the plants grown in elevated CO2 contained significantly more starch and significantly less fructans in the ears compared to the plants grown in ambient CO2. Elevated CO2 had no effect on ear starch and TNC contents at the final harvest. Increasing the CO2 concentration from 360 to 520 μmol mol?1 had a larger effect on wheat non-structural carbohydrates than the further increase from 520 to 680 μmol mol?1. The results are discussed in relation to the effects of elevated CO2 on yield and yield components.  相似文献

To assess the interactions between concentration of atmospheric CO2 and N supply, the response of Plantago major ssp. pleiosperma Pilger to a doubling of the ambient CO2 concentration of 350 µl l?1 was investigated in a range of exponential rates of N addition. The relative growth rate (RGR) as a function of the internal plant nitrogen concentration (Ni), was increased by elevated CO2 at optimal and intermediate Ni. The rate of photosynthesis, expressed per unit leaf area and plotted versus Ni. was increased by 20-30% at elevated CO2 for Ni above 30 mg N g?1 dry weight. However, the rate of photosynthesis, expressed on a leaf dry matter basis and plotted versus Ni, was not affected by the CO2 concentration. The allocation of dry matter between shoot and root was not affected by the CO2 concentration at any of the N addition rates. This is in good agreement with theoretical models. based on a balance between the rate of photosynthesis of the shoot and the acquisition of N by the roots. The concentration of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) was increased at elevated CO2 and at N limitation, resulting in a shift in the partitioning of photosynthates from structural to nonstructural and, in terms of carbon balance, unproductive dry matter. The increase in concentration of TNC led to a decrease in both specific leaf area (SLA) and Ni at all levels of nutrient supply, and was the cause of the increased rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area. Correction of the relationship between RGR and Ni for the accumulation of TNC made the effect of elevated CO2 on the relationship between RGR and Ni disappear. We conclude that the shift in the relationship between RGR and Ni was due to the accumulation of TNC and not due to differences in physiological variables such as photosynthesis and shoot and root respiration, changes in leaf morphology or allocation of dry matter.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to determine the effects of elevated CO2, elevated temperatures, and altered water regimes in native shortgrass steppe. Intact soil cores dominated by Bouteloua gracilis, a C4 perennial grass, or Pascopyrum smithii, a C3 perennial grass, were placed in growth chambers with 350 or 700 μL L?1 atmospheric CO2, and under either normal or elevated temperatures. The normal regime mimicked field patterns of diurnal and seasonal temperatures, and the high-temperature regime was 4 °C warmer. Water was supplied at three different levels in a seasonal pattern similar to that observed in the field. Total biomass after two growing seasons was 19% greater under elevated CO2, with no significant difference between the C3 and C4 grass. The effect of elevated CO2 on biomass was greatest at the intermediate water level. The positive effect of elevated CO2 on shoot biomass was greater at normal temperatures in B. gracilis, and greater at elevated temperatures in P. smithii. Neither root-to-shoot ratio nor production of seed heads was affected by elevated CO2. Plant tissue N and soil inorganic N concentrations were lower under elevated Co2, but no more so in the C3 than the C4 plant. Elevated CO2 appeared to increase plant N limitation, but there was no strong evidence for an increase in N limitation or a decrease in the size of the CO2 effect from the first to the second growing season. Autumn samples of large roots plus crowns, the perennial organs, had 11% greater total N under elevated CO2, in spite of greater N limitation.  相似文献

Recent work has suggested that the photosynthetic rate of certain C4 species can be stimulated by increasing CO2 concentration, [CO2], even under optimal water and nutrients. To determine the basis for the observed photosynthetic stimulation, we tested the hypothesis that the CO2 leak rate from the bundle sheath would be directly related to any observed stimulation in single leaf photosynthesis at double the current [CO2]. Three C4 species that differed in the reported degree of bundle sheath leakiness to CO2, Flaveria trinervia, Panicum miliaceum, and Panicum maximum, were grown for 31–48 days after sowing at a [CO2] of 350 μl l?1 (ambient) or 700 μl l?1 (elevated). Assimilation as a function of increasing [CO2] at high photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, 1 600 μmol m?2 s?1) indicated that leaf photosynthesis was not saturated under current ambient [CO2] for any of the three C4 species. Assimilation as a function of increasing PPFD also indicated that the response of leaf photosynthesis to elevated [CO2] was light dependent for all three C4 species. The stimulation of leaf photosynthesis at elevated [CO2] was not associated with previously published values of CO2 leak rates from the bundle sheath, changes in the ratio of activities of PEP-carboxylase to RuBP carboxylase/oxgenase, or any improvement in daytime leaf water potential for the species tested in this experiment. In spite of the simulation of leaf photosynthesis, a significant increase in growth at elevated [CO2] was only observed for one species, F. trinervia. Results from this study indicate that leaf photosynthetic rates of certain C4 species can respond directly to increased [CO2] under optimal growth conditions, but that the stimulation of whole plant growth at elevated carbon dioxide cannot be predicted solely on the response of individual leaves.  相似文献

The interactive effects of increased carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280–320 nm) radiation on Acacia karroo Hayne, a C3 tree, and Themeda triandra Forsk., a C4 grass, were investigated. We tested the hypothesis that A. karroo would show greater CO2-induced growth stimulation than T. triandra, which would partially explain current encroachment of A. karroo into C4 grasslands, but that increased UV-B could mitigate this advantage. Seedlings were grown in open-top chambers in a greenhouse in ambient (360 μmol mol-1) and elevated (650 μmol mol-1) CO2, combined with ambient (1.56 to 8.66 kJ m-2 day-1) or increased (2.22 to 11.93 kJ m-2 day-1) biologically effective (weighted) UV-B irradiances. After 30 weeks, elevated CO2 had no effect on biomass of A. karroo, despite increased net CO2 assimilation rates. Interaction between UV-B and CO2 on stomatal conductance was found, with conductances decreasing only where elevated CO2 and UV-B were supplied separately. Increases in water use efficiencies, foliar starch concentrations, root nodule numbers and total nodule mass were measured in elevated CO2. Elevated UV-B caused only an increase in foliar carbon concentrations. In T. triandra, net CO2 assimilation rates were unaffected in elevated CO2, but stomatal conductances and foliar nitrogen concentrations decreased, and water use efficiencies increased. Biomass of all vegetative fractions, particularly leaf sheaths, was increased in elevated CO2. and was accompanied by increased leaf blade lengths and individual leaf and leaf sheath masses. However, tiller numbers were reduced in elevated CO2. Significantly moderating effects of elevated UV-B were apparent only in individual masses of leaf blades and sheaths, and in total sheath and shoot biomass. The direct CO2-induced growth responses of the species therefore do not support the hypothesis of CO2-driven woody encroachment of C4 grasslands. Rather, differential changes in resource use efficiency between grass and woody species, or morphological responses of grass species, could alter the competitive balance. Increased UV-B radiation is unlikely to substantially alter the CO2 response of these species.  相似文献

Abstract Long‐term exposure of plants to elevated CO2 often leads to downward photosynthetic acclimation. Nitrogen (N) deficiency could potentially exacerbate this response by reducing growth rate and the sink for photosynthates, but this has not always been observed. Experimentally, the interpretation of N effects on CO2 responses can be confounded by increasing severity of tissue N deficiency over time when N supply is not adjusted as demand increases. In this study, N supply ranged from sub‐ to supra‐optimal (20–540 kgN ha–l equivalent), and relatively stable levels of tissue N concentration were obtained in all treatments by varying twice‐weekly application rates in proportion to plant growth. The effects of N on photosynthesis and growth of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) raised at ambient (35 Pa) and three elevated (70, 105, 140 Pa) CO2 partial pressures (pCO2) were evaluated. Averaging across N treatments, leaf total non‐structural carbohydrates (TNC) were 2.5‐ to 3‐fold higher and leaf N concentrations were 31–35% lower at elevated compared to ambient pCO2. Light‐saturated net CO2 assimilation rates measured at growth pCO2 (Asatg) were significantly higher (26–40% depending on N supply) in plants grown at elevated compared to ambient pCO2. When measured at a common pCO2 of 35 Pa, the Asat of plants grown at elevated CO2 was 15–29% less than that of plants grown at 35 Pa, indicative of downward photosynthetic acclimation. The magnitude of downward photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 was greater in plants grown at high (180 and 540 kgN ha–l) compared to low (20 and 60 kgN ha–l) N supply, and this was associated with a higher Asat at growth pCO2, higher leaf area ratio (leaf area/total biomass), and higher TNC in leaves of high‐N plants. Our results indicate that the effect of N on acclimation to CO2 will depend on the balance between supply and demand for N during the growing period, and the effect this has on biomass allocation and source‐sink C balance at the whole‐plant level.  相似文献

Rising levels of atmospheric CO2 will have profound, direct effects on plant carbon metabolism. In this study we used gas exchange measurements, models describing the instantaneous response of leaf net CO2 assimilation rate (A) to intercellular CO2 partial pressure (Ci), in vitro enzyme activity assay, and carbohydrate assay in order to investigate the photosynthetic responses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Wembley) to growth under elevated partial pressures of atmospheric CO2 (Ca). At flag leaf ligule emergence, the modelled, in vivo, maximum carboxylation velocity for RuBisCO was significantly lower in plants grown at elevated Ca than in plants grown at ambient Ca (70 Pa compared with 40 Pa). By 12 d after ligule emergence, no significant difference in this parameter was detectable. At ligule emergence, plants grown at elevated Ca exhibited reduced in vitro initial activities and activation states of RuBisCO. At their respective growth Ci values, the photosynthesis of 40-Pa-grown plants was sensitive to p(O2) and to p(CO2) whereas that of 70-Pa-grown plants was insensitive. Both sucrose and starch accumulated more rapidly in the leaves of plants grown at 70 Pa. At flag leaf ligule emergence, modelled non-photorespiratory respiration in the light (Rd) was significantly higher in 70-Pa-grown plants than in 40-Pa-grown plants. By 12 d after ligule emergence no significant differences in Rd were detectable.  相似文献

In this study, the response of N2 fixation to elevated CO2 was measured in Scirpus olneyi, a C3 sedge, and Spartina patens, a C4 grass, using acetylene reduction assay and 15N2 gas feeding. Field plants grown in PVC tubes (25 cm long, 10 cm internal diameter) were used. Exposure to elevated CO2 significantly (P < 0·05) caused a 35% increase in nitrogenase activity and 73% increase in 15N incorporated by Scirpus olneyi. In Spartina patens, elevated CO2 (660 ± 1 μ mol mol 1) increased nitrogenase activity and 15N incorporation by 13 and 23%, respectively. Estimates showed that the rate of N2 fixation in Scirpus olneyi under elevated CO2 was 611 ± 75 ng 15N fixed plant 1 h 1 compared with 367 ± 46 ng 15N fixed plant 1 h 1 in ambient CO2 plants. In Spartina patens, however, the rate of N2 fixation was 12·5 ± 1·1 versus 9·8 ± 1·3 ng 15N fixed plant 1 h 1 for elevated and ambient CO2, respectively. Heterotrophic non-symbiotic N2 fixation in plant-free marsh sediment also increased significantly (P < 0·05) with elevated CO2. The proportional increase in 15N2 fixation correlated with the relative stimulation of photosynthesis, in that N2 fixation was high in the C3 plant in which photosynthesis was also high, and lower in the C4 plant in which photosynthesis was relatively less stimulated by growth in elevated CO2. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that carbon fixation in C3 species, stimulated by rising CO2, is likely to provide additional carbon to endophytic and below-ground microbial processes.  相似文献

Evidence is presented contrary to the suggestion that C4 plants grow larger at elevated CO2 because the C4 pathway of young C4 leaves has C3-like characteristics, making their photosynthesis O2 sensitive and responsive to high CO2. We combined PAM fluorescence with gas exchange measurements to examine the O2 dependence of photosynthesis in young and mature leaves of Panicum antidotale (C4, NADP-ME) and P. coloratum (C4, NAD-ME), at an intercellular CO2 concentration of 5 Pa. P. laxum (C3) was used for comparison. The young C4 leaves had CO2 and light response curves typical of C4 photosynthesis. When the O2 concentration was gradually increased between 2 and 40%, CO2 assimilation rates (A) of both mature and young C4 leaves were little affected, while the ratio of the quantum yield of photosystem II to that of CO2 assimilation (ΦPSII/ΦCO2) increased more in young (up to 31%) than mature (up to 10%) C4 leaves. A of C3 leaves decreased by 1·3 and ΦPSII/ΦCO2 increased by 9-fold, over the same range of O2 concentrations. Larger increases in electron transport requirements in young, relative to mature, C4 leaves at low CO2 are indicative of greater O2 sensitivity of photorespiration. Photosynthesis modelling showed that young C4 leaves have lower bundle sheath CO2 concentration, brought about by higher bundle sheath conductance relative to the activity of the C4 and C3 cycles and/or lower ratio of activities of the C4 to C3 cycles.  相似文献

We investigated how light and CO2 levels interact to influence growth, phenology, and the physiological processes involved in leaf senescence in red oak (Quercus rubra) seedlings. We grew plants in high and low light and in elevated and ambient CO2. At the end of three years of growth, shade plants showed greater biomass enhancement under elevated CO2 than sun plants. We attribute this difference to an increase in leaf area ratio (LAR) in shade plants relative to sun plants, as well as to an ontogenetic effect: as plants increased in size, the LAR declined concomitant with a decline in biomass enhancement under elevated CO2 Elevated CO2 prolonged the carbon gain capacity of shade‐grown plants during autumnal senescence, thus increasing their functional leaf lifespan. The prolongation of carbon assimilation, however, did not account for the increased growth enhancement in shade plants under elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 did not significantly alter leaf phenology. Nitrogen concentrations in both green and senesced leaves were lower under elevated CO2 and declined more rapidly in sun leaves than in shade leaves. Similar to nitrogen concentration, the initial slope of A/Ci curves indicated that Rubisco activity declined more rapidly in sun plants than in shade plants, particularly under elevated CO2. Absolute levels of chlorophyll were affected by the interaction of CO2 and light, and chlorophyll content declined to a minimal level in sun plants sooner than in shade plants. These declines in N concentration, in the initial slope of A/Ci curves, and in chlorophyll content were consistent with declining photosynthesis, such that elevated CO2 accelerated senescence in sun plants and prolonged leaf function in shade plants. These results have implications for the carbon economy of seedlings and the regeneration of red oak under global change conditions.

Rice (Oryza sativa[L.] cv. IR-72) was grown for a season in sunlit, controlled-environment chambers at 350 or 700 µmol CO2 mol?1 under continuously flooded (unstressed) or drought-imposed periods at panicle initiation (stressed). The midday canopy photosynthetic rates (Pn), measured at the CO2 concentration ([CO2]) used for growth, were enhanced by high [CO2] but reduced by drought. High [CO2] increased Pn by 18 to 34% for the unstressed plants, and 6 to 12% for the stressed plants. In the unstressed plants, CO2 enrichment increased water-use efficiency (WUE) by 26%, and reduced evapotranspiration (ET) by 8 to 14%. Both high [CO2] and severe drought decreased the activity and content of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco). High-CO2-unstressed plants had 6 to 22% smaller content and 5 to 25%, lower activity of Rubisco than ambient-CO2-unstressed plants. Under severe drought, reductions of Rubisco were 53 and 27% in activity and 40 and 12% in content, respectively, for ambient- and high-CO2 treatments. The apparent catalytic turnover rate (Kcat) of midday fully activated Rubisco was not altered by high [CO2], but severe drought reduced Kcat by 17 to 23%. Chloroplasts of the high-CO2 leaves contained more, and larger starch grains than those of the ambient CO2 leaves. High [CO2] did not affect the leaf sucrose content of unstressed plants. In contrast, severe drought reduced the leaf starch and increased the sucrose content in both CO2 treatments. The activity of leaf sucrose phosphate synthase of unstressed plants was not affected by high [CO2], whereas that of ambient-CO2-grown plants was reduced 45% by severe drought. Reduction in ET and enhancements in both Pn and WUE for rice grown under high [CO2] helped to delay the adverse effects of severe drought and allowed the stressed plants to assimilate CO2 for an extra day. Thus, rice grown in the next century may utilize less water, use water more efficiently, and be able to tolerate drought better under some situations.  相似文献

We measured the short‐term direct and long‐term indirect effects of elevated CO2 on leaf dark respiration of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) in an intact forest ecosystem. Trees were exposed to ambient or ambient + 200 µmol mol?1 atmospheric CO2 using free‐air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) technology. After correcting for measurement artefacts, a short‐term 200 µmol mol?1 increase in CO2 reduced leaf respiration by 7–14% for sweetgum and had essentially no effect on loblolly pine. This direct suppression of respiration was independent of the CO2 concentration under which the trees were grown. Growth under elevated CO2 did not appear to have any long‐term indirect effects on leaf maintenance respiration rates or the response of respiration to changes in temperature (Q10, R0). Also, we found no relationship between mass‐based respiration rates and leaf total nitrogen concentrations. Leaf construction costs were unaffected by growth CO2 concentration, although leaf construction respiration decreased at elevated CO2 in both species for leaves at the top of the canopy. We conclude that elevated CO2 has little effect on leaf tissue respiration, and that the influence of elevated CO2 on plant respiratory carbon flux is primarily through increased biomass.  相似文献

Onion (Allium cepa) was grown in the field within temperature gradient tunnels (providing about ‐2.5°C to +2.5°C from outside temperatures) maintained at either 374 or 532 μmol mol?1 CO2. Plant leaf area was determined non‐destructively at 7 day intervals until the time of bulbing in 12 combinations of temperature and CO2 concentration. Gas exchange was measured in each plot at the time of bulbing, and the carbohydrate content of the leaf (source) and bulb (sink) was determined. Maximum rate of leaf area expansion increased with mean temperature. Leaf area duration and maximum rate of leaf area expansion were not significantly affected by CO2. The light‐saturated rates of leaf photosynthesis (Asat) were greater in plants grown at normal than at elevated CO2 concentrations at the same measurement CO2 concentration. Acclimation of photosynthesis decreased with an increase in growth temperature, and with an increase in leaf nitrogen content at elevated CO2. The ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 (C1/C3 ratio) was 7.4% less for plants grown at elevated compared with normal CO2. Asat in plants grown at elevated CO2 was less than in plants grown at normal CO2 when compared at the same C1. Hence, acclimation of photosynthesis was due both to stomatal acclimation and to limitations to biochemical CO2 fixation. Carbohydrate content of the onion bulbs was greater at elevated than at normal CO2. In contrast, carbohydrate content was less at elevated compared with normal CO2 in the leaf sections in which CO2 exchange was measured at the same developmental stage. Therefore, acclimation of photosynthesis in fully expanded onion leaves was detected despite the absence of localised carbohydrate accumulation in these field‐grown crops.  相似文献
