Muscle surfaces of pork were inoculated with a mixture of Yersinia enterocolitica and Staphylococcus aureus, and chicken muscle with Campylobacter jejuni or a mixture of Salmonella typhimurium and Staph. aureus. The surface growth at 20 degrees C was followed microscopically. Organisms grew as discrete colonies bound together by a glycocalyx which differed between bacterial species. On prolonged incubation colonies spread peripherally and tended to coalesce, while still retaining their colony structure. Staphylococcus aureus colonies were very small and remained so. The glycocalyx was considered critical in maintaining the dense populations of bacteria on the meat surfaces.  相似文献

Immersion of chicken muscle fascia in water or physiological saline caused collagen associated with the connective tissue to expand and form a dense network of fibers on the surface. Similar changes were noted for muscle perimysium. Two test strains of Salmonella spp. attached to the collagen fibers only when muscle was immersed for extended times in water. Bacteria did not attach to the fascia or perimysium of muscle that was transiently immersed in suspensions. The presence of sodium chloride in the suspension media prevented firm attachment, whereas saline rinses removed many attached cells.  相似文献

Pure silver-, silver oxide- and silver chloride-treated surfaces in comparison to polypropylene inhibited both growth and adherence from saline ofSerratia marcescens, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa andCandida albicans. These same organisms demonstrated enhanced adherence to an Ion-Beam-Assisted-Deposited silver surface followed by loss of viability. This type of surface in contrast to the other silver surfaces did not produce zones of inhibition in agar diffusion tests.  相似文献

Food-borne diseases are of major concern worldwide. To date, around 250 different food-borne diseases have been described, and bacteria are the causative agents of two thirds of food-borne disease outbreaks. Among the predominant bacteria involved in these diseases, Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of gastroenteritis resulting from the consumption of contaminated food. Staphylococcal food poisoning is due to the absorption of staphylococcal enterotoxins preformed in the food. Here, we briefly review the latest data on staphylococcal enterotoxins and some papers exemplifying the interactions between S. aureus and the food matrix; environmental factors affecting staphylococcal enterotoxin production are discussed.  相似文献

Organisms were isolated from soil, bark, ret liquor and other sources by enrichment on Klason lignin or guaiacol. The isolates were screened for their ability to assimilate various phenolic compounds, including methoxylated aromatic compounds, and extracellular production of polygalacturonase, pectinesterase and laccase. Myostatin, a new member of the TGF-ß superfamily, is predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle cells and functions as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth in animals. Recently, we have reported three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the chicken myostatin gene. Herein, we investigate the association of those SNPs with the production traits in a F2 chicken line derived from Broilers crossing to Silky with the least square analysis. The results show that the BB and AA genotypes are strongly associated with abdominal fat weight (AFW), abdominal fat percentage (AFP), and birth weight (BW) (P < 0.05). Breast muscle percentage (BMP) of the AA type is higher than that of the AB type. The breast muscle weight and breast muscle percentages of F2 individuals have significant difference between CC and DD genotypes (P < 0.05). Breast muscle weight (BMW) of EF birds is higher than that of EE birds (P < 0.05). In this report, we present the first genetic evidence to show that chicken myostatin not only plays an important role in controlling skeletal muscle growth and differentiation, but also may be involved in regulation of adipose growth in chicken.  相似文献

Most genetically engineered organisms are unlikely to pose any threat to the environment because they are already highly selected for survival under restricted conditions. Engineering for new traits in natural or semi-natural populations, however, may entail greater risks. Genetic novelty, i.e. mutation, is an important component of the evolutionary process; a small but significant proportion of natural mutations lead to improved fitness and increased competitiveness. The artificial insertion of a new trait may produce a similar effect, setting an organism on a new and unpredictable evolutionary track. The current challenge is to attain the capacity to identify the small proportion of genetically engineered organisms in which such events might occur.  相似文献

Summary Data are provided on the growth of non-pathogenic soil fungi on root surfaces. By growing roots from non-sterile soil into sterile vermiculite, and by regular isolation of fungi from the roots which had grown into the sterile vermiculite, it was shown that fungal growth down roots is slow. It is suggested that in the colonization of roots by non-pathogenic fungi successive lateral colonization from the soil is of greater importance than the growth of fungi down roots.  相似文献

This paper explores the emergence of the Slow Food Movement, an international consumer movement dedicated to the protection of ‘endangered foods.’ The history of one of these ‘endangered foods’, lardo di Colonnata, provides the ethnographic window through which I examine Slow Food's cultural politics.
