Rat lung microsomes and liposomes made from isolated lung microsomal lipids were found to be much more resistant to lipid peroxidation than those from liver in both enzymatic and nonenzymatic systems. The polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of isolated lung microsomal lipids was 28% of total fatty acids, while liver was 54%. The vitamin E (α-tocopherol) content of isolated lung microsomal lipids was 2.13 nmol/μmol lipid phosphate and that of liver was 0.43. Individually, neither the lower PUFA content nor higher vitamin E levels could account for the resistance of lung microsomal lipids to peroxidation. Distearoyl-L-a-phosphatidylcholine and/or α-tocopherol were added to liver microsomal lipids to achieve different PUFA to vitamin E ratios at PUFA contents of 28% or 54%, and the resulting liposomes were subjected to an NADPH-dependent lipid peroxidation system utilizing cytochrome P450 reductase, EDTA-Fe+3, and ADP-Fe+3. Liposomes having PUFA to vitamin E ratios less than approximately 250 nmol PUFA/nmol vitamin E were resistant to peroxidation, whereas lipid peroxidation, as evidenced by malondialdehyde production, occurred in liposomes having higher ratios. When lipid peroxidation occurred, 40%–60% of the liposomal vitamin E was irreversibly oxidized. Irreversible oxidation did not occur in the absence of lipid peroxidation. These studies indicated that the low PUFA to vitamin E ratio in lung microsomes and isolated microsomal lipids was sufficient to account for the observed resistance to lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

The increase of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in animal tissues has been proposed as a mechanism of lead (Pb) poisoning through lipid peroxidation or altered eicosanoids metabolism. We have studied fatty acid (FA) composition in liver and brain of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) feeding for 3 weeks on diets containing combinations of low or high levels of vitamin E (20 or 200 UI/kg) and Pb (0 or 2 g/kg). Saturated FA, n-6 PUFA and total concentrations of FA were higher in livers of Pb-exposed mallards, but not in their brains. The percentage of n-6 PUFA in liver and brain was slightly higher in Pb-exposed mallards. The increase of n-6 PUFA in liver was associated with decreased triglycerides and increased cholesterol in plasma, thus could be in part attributed to feed refusal and fat mobilization. The hepatic ratios between adrenic acid (22:4 n-6) and arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6) or between adrenic acid and linoleic acid (18:2 n-6) were higher in Pb exposed birds, supporting the existing hypothesis of increased fatty acid elongation by Pb. Among the possible consequences of increased n-6 PUFA concentration in tissues, we found increased lipid peroxidation in liver without important histopathological changes, and decreased plasma alkaline phosphatase activity that may reflect altered bone metabolism in birds.  相似文献

The susceptibility of liver microsomes to lipid peroxidation was evaluated in seven species: rat, rabbit, trout, mouse, pig, cow, and horse. Lipid peroxidation was measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances formed in the presence of either FeCl3-ADP/ascorbate or FeCl2/H2O2 initiating systems. For rat, rabbit, and trout microsomes, the order of susceptibility to peroxidation was rat > rabbit >> trout. The lack of peroxidation in trout microsomes could be explained by high microsomal vitamin E levels. Membrane fatty acid levels differed between species. Docosahexaenoic acid predominated in the trout, arachidonic acid in the rat, and linoleic acid in the rabbit. The contribution of individual fatty acids to lipid peroxidation reflected the degree of unsaturation with docosahexaenoic > arachidonic >>> linoleic. For all species except trout, the predicted susceptibility to peroxidation, based on the response of individual fatty acids, agreed well with directly measured microsomal peroxidation. With the exception of the trout, vitamin E content ranged from 0.083–0.311 nmol/mg microsomal protein between species, and low levels did not influence susceptibility to peroxidation. Trout microsomes peroxidized only after vitamin E depletion by prolonged incubation. The data indicate that below a vitamin E threshold, species differences in membrane susceptibility to peroxidation can be reasonably predicted based only on content of individual peroxidizable fatty acids.  相似文献

In view of a possible relationship between fish oil, lipid peroxidation, and atherosclerosis, the in vitro lipid peroxidation susceptibility of red blood cells (RBCs) from rabbits on conventional (-FO) and fish oil-enriched diets (+FO) was investigated. The diet caused substantial increases in the RBC concentrations of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), in combination with decreases in the concentration of oleic acid (18:1) and linoleic acid (18:2). Cumene hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress led to increased overall fatty acid peroxidation in +FO RBCs compared with with -FO RBCs, as quantitated by GLC fatty acid analysis. However, the increased overall susceptibility to lipid peroxidation of +FO RBCs was not reflected in increased peroxidation of every individual fatty acid. This was observed for endogenous arachidonic acid (20:4) as well as, in separate experiments, for exogenously added parinaric acid (PnA). The increased cumene hydroperoxide-induced PUFA oxidation in +FO RBCs was accompanied by a lesser extent of hemolysis. To account for these observations, it is proposed that the increased n-3 PUFA content of +FO RBCs serves as an oxidizable buffer. The present data suggest that oxidation of fatty acids can occur until a critically low level of intact phospholipid in the RBC membrane is reached, after which the membrane destabilizes and hemolysis occurs. At the same time, the PUFA buffer in +FO RBCs could also prevent oxidative damage to specific membrane proteins, which could also help prevent cell lysis.  相似文献

The endogenous DNA adduct, M(1)dG, has been shown to arise in vitro in reactions of dG with malondialdehyde (MDA), a product of both lipid peroxidation and 4'-oxidation of deoxyribose in DNA, and with base propenals also derived from deoxyribose 4'-oxidation. We now report the results of cellular studies consistent with base propenals, and not MDA, as the major source of M1dG under biological conditions. As a foundation for cellular studies, M1dG, base propenals, and MDA were quantified in purified DNA treated with oxidizing agents known to produce deoxyribose 4'-oxidation. The results revealed a consistent pattern; Fe2+-EDTA and gamma-radiation generated MDA but not base propenals or M1dG, whereas bleomycin and peroxynitrite (ONOO-) both produced M1dG as well as base propenals with no detectable MDA. These observations were then assessed in Escherichia coli with controlled membrane levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). ONOO- treatment (2 mm) of cells containing no PUFA (defined medium with 18:0/stearic acid) produced 6.5 M1dG/10(7) deoxynucleotides and no detectable lipid peroxidation products, including MDA, as compared with 3.8 M1dG/10(7) deoxynucleotides and 0.07 microg/ml lipid peroxidation products with control cells grown in a mixture of fatty acids (0.5% PUFA) mimicking Luria-Bertani medium. In cells grown with linoleic acid (18:2), the level of PUFA rose to 54% and the level of MDA rose to 0.14 microg/ml, whereas M1dG fell to 1.4/10(7) deoxynucleotides. Parallel studies with gamma-radiation revealed levels of MDA similar to those produced by ONOO- but no detectable M1dG. These results are consistent with base propenals as the major source of M1dG in this model cell system.  相似文献

The detection of 1,N2-propanodeoxyguanosine adducts in the DNA of rodent and human tissues as endogenous lesions has raised important questions regarding the source of their formation and their roles in carcinogenesis. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have generated substantial evidence which supports the involvement of short- and long-chain enals derived from oxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in their formation. These studies show that: (1) the cyclic propano adducts are common products from reactions of enals with DNA bases; (2) they are formed specifically from linoleic acid (LA; omega-6) and docosahexaenoic acid (omega-3) under in vitro stimulated lipid peroxidation conditions; (3) the levels of propano adducts are dramatically increased in rat liver DNA upon depletion of glutathione; (4) the adduct levels are increased in the liver DNA of the CCl4-treated rats and the mutant strain of Long Evans rats which are genetically predisposed to increased lipid peroxidation; and (5) adduct levels are significantly higher in older rats than in newborn rats. These studies collectively demonstrate that tissue lipid peroxidation is a main endogenous pathway leading to propano adduction in DNA. The possible contribution from environmental sources, however, cannot be completely excluded. The mutagenicity of enals and the mutations observed in site-specific mutagenesis studies using a model 1,N2-propanodeoxyguanosine adduct suggest that these adducts are potential promutagenic lesions. The increased levels of the propano adducts in the tissue of carcinogen-treated animals also provide suggestive evidence for their roles in carcinogenesis. The involvement of these adducts in tumor promotion is speculated on the basis that oxidative condition in tissues is believed to be associated with this process.  相似文献

Effects of fatty acids on the growth of Caco-2 cells   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
Epidemiological studies suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids may protect against colorectal neoplasia. In order to explore this observation, cell proliferation and viability, lipid composition, membrane fluidity, and lipid peroxidation were measured in Caco-2 cells after 48h incubation with various fatty acids. Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids incorporated less well in the membranes than polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). All of the PUFAs tested had an inhibitory effect on cell proliferation/viability whereas the saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids did not. Addition of palmitic acid had no significant effect on membrane fluidity whereas unsaturated fatty acids increased membrane fluidity in a dose-dependent manner. PUFAs strongly increased tumor cell lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids increased lipid peroxidation in this cell line only at high concentration. Preincubation of Caco-2 cells with vitamin E prevented the inhibition of proliferation/viability, the elevation of the MDA concentration and the increased membrane fluidity induced by PUFAs. Our data indicate that PUFAs are potent inhibitors of the growth of colon cancer cells in vitro.  相似文献

Endemic cancer of the esophagus has shown a positive association with the consumption of maize meal. It has been postulated that this association is due to the conversion, in the stomach mucosa, of the linoleic acid contained in maize meal to prostaglandin E2. The proportion of non-esterified linoleic acid available in the stomach may therefore be an important factor. Samples of commercially prepared maize flour, cooked and uncooked, and other maize-based foods were analysed for total and free content of various fatty acids using gas-liquid chromatography. High levels of non-esterified fatty acids (11 to 42% of contained fatty acids) were found both in maize meal and in foods prepared from it. In food prepared from maize meal, 49 mg to 363 mg non-esterified linoleic acid per 100-g sample was found. High levels of non-esterified linoleic acid in the diet, causing raised intragastric production of prostaglandin E2 and profoundly affecting the normal pH and fluid content of the esophagus, may create a predisposition to esophageal carcinogenesis.  相似文献

Summary

The aim of this work was to study the adaptation of enzymatic antioxidant cell defense to the nature of the membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). 3T3 Swiss fibroblasts were grown for 5 days in a medium supplemented with 50 μM linoleic acid (LA) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and compared t control cells (C). The phospholipid fatty acid content was evaluated: LA were enriched in n-6 PUFA (27.8%) in comparison to C (6.7%) or EPA (5.6%); EPA were enriched in n-3 PUFA (26.2%) in comparison to LA (4.4%) or C (4.6%). The fatty acid double bond index (DBI) increased from C to LA and EPA. The activities of the three key enzymatic antioxidant defenses, SOD, GPx and GST, increased with the degree of unsaturation of the phospholipid fatty acids. In the cells with fatty acids that are very sensitive to oxidative stress, the higher activities of SOD and GPx might act to limit the initiation of lipid peroxidation and the higher activities of GST and GPx to decrease the toxic effects of the various species produced from lipid degradation.  相似文献

It has been reported that glutamate decreased the intracellular glutathione (GSH) concentration and thereby induced cell death in C6 rat glioma cells. Polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, and linoleic acid enhanced lipid peroxidation promoting 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) formation under the glutamate-induced GSH-depletion. The enhancement of lipid peroxidation by polyunsaturated fatty acids was species-dependent. Some antioxidants capable of scavenging oxygen and lipid radicals and some iron or copper scavengers inhibited both the lipid peroxidation and the 8-OH-dG formation, consequently protecting against cell death induced by glutamate-induced GSH depletion. These results suggest that GSH depletion caused by glutamate induces lipid peroxidation and consequently 8-OH-dG formation and that polyunsaturated fatty acids enhance lipid peroxidation associated with mediated 8-OH-dG formation through a chain reaction.  相似文献

Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) is a lipid mediator that inhibits food intake by activating the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha. In the rodent small intestine OEA levels decrease during food deprivation and increase upon refeeding, suggesting that endogenous OEA may participate in the regulation of satiety. Here we show that feeding stimulates OEA mobilization in the mucosal layer of rat duodenum and jejunum but not in the serosal layer from the same intestinal segments in other sections of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, ileum, colon) or in a broad series of internal organs and tissues (e.g. liver, brain, heart, plasma). Feeding also increases the levels of other unsaturated fatty acid ethanolamides (FAEs) (e.g. linoleoylethanolamide) without affecting those of saturated FAEs (e.g. palmitoylethanolamide). Feeding-induced OEA mobilization is accompanied by enhanced accumulation of OEA-generating N-acylphosphatidylethanolamines (NAPEs) increased activity and expression of the OEA-synthesizing enzyme NAPE-phospholipase D, and decreased activity and expression of the OEAdegrading enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase. Immunostaining studies revealed that NAPE-phospholipase D and fatty acid amide hydrolase are expressed in intestinal enterocytes and lamina propria cells. Collectively, these results indicate that nutrient availability controls OEA mobilization in the mucosa of the proximal intestine through a concerted regulation of OEA biosynthesis and degradation.  相似文献

Although LDL esterified polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) contribute largely to the pool of oxidizable lipids in plasma, they coexist with a non-negligible content of free PUFA. In some pathological conditions, the free PUFA/albumin ratio becomes abnormally elevated. Modeling was performed in a system constituted of linoleic acid bound to human serum albumin (HSA) in which oxidation was initiated by hydrophilic AAPH. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation was evaluated for various flavonoids. The accumulations of hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic acids (HPODE), hydroxyoctadecadienoic acids (HODE) and ketooctadecadienoic acids (KODE) were similarly inhibited: isoquercitrin>quercetin>catechin=isorhamnetin>kaempferol>quercetin-4'-beta-D-glucoside=quercetin-3,4'-di-beta-D-glucoside. Surprisingly, quercetin and isorhamnetin afforded a protection to linoleic acid long after their consumption. Elucidation by mass spectrometry and NMR of the quercetin oxidation products and assessment of their antioxidant capacity pointed out that 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and 2-(3,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)-2,4,6-trihydroxybenzofuran-3(2H)-one are major contributors to the apparent quercetin antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

Age-related changes in the balance between endogenous pro-oxidative and antioxidative processes in the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna (Crustacea) were assessed. The activities of key antioxidant enzymes including catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and levels of lipid peroxidation measured as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) were determined in eight age classes, covering juvenile, young and senescent adults. Age-related changes in fatty acid composition were also measured to examine the contribution of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the peroxidation status of animals. Biochemical responses depicted in this study demonstrated that age-related decline in survival was accompanied by increasing oxidative stress and oxidative damage. Enhanced oxidative stress in aging D. magna was suggested by the significant increase in the formation of lipid peroxides, and a concomitant reduction of unsaturated fatty acids of 20 or more carbon atoms. Because aging was accompanied by selective loss of key antioxidant enzymes and small changes in the amount of PUFA, the breakdown of antioxidant defences might have directly contributed to oxidative stress, membrane lipid peroxide and a decline of survival. Indeed, the results reported here, indicate that age-related increases of lipid peroxides were at least partially due to the functional imbalance of enzymatic antioxidant defences.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that were supplemented with vitamin E on lipid peroxidation, glutathione-dependent detoxifying enzyme system activity, and lipogenic fatty acid synthase (FAS) expression in rat liver. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed semipurified diets containing either 1% (w/w) corn oil or 10% each of beef tallow, corn oil, perilla oil, and fish oil for 4 wk. Alpha-tocopherol was supplemented in perilla oil (0.015%) and fish oil (0.019%). Hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, an estimate of lipid peroxidation, were not significantly different among the dietary groups. The glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase activities were all elevated by the polyunsaturated fats, especially fish oil. The activity of FAS was reduced in the polyunsaturated fat-fed groups in the order of fish oil, perilla oil, and corn oil. The mRNA contents decreased in rats that were fed the 10% fat diets, particularly polyunsaturated fats, compared with the rats that were fed the 1% corn oil diet. Similarly, the inhibitory effect was the greatest in fish oil. These results suggest that lipid peroxidation can be minimized by vitamin E; PUFA in itself has a suppressive effect on lipogenic enzyme.  相似文献

Background

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), in particular the long chain marine fatty acids docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA), are linked to many health benefits in humans and in animal models. Little is known of the molecular response to DHA and EPA of the small intestine, and the potential contribution of this organ to the beneficial effects of these fatty acids. Here, we assessed gene expression changes induced by DHA and EPA in the wildtype C57BL/6J murine small intestine using whole genome microarrays and functionally characterized the most prominent biological process.

Results

The main biological process affected based on gene expression analysis was lipid metabolism. Fatty acid uptake, peroxisomal and mitochondrial beta-oxidation, and omega-oxidation of fatty acids were all increased. Quantitative real time PCR, and -in a second animal experiment- intestinal fatty acid oxidation measurements confirmed significant gene expression differences and showed in a dose-dependent manner significant changes at biological functional level. Furthermore, no major changes in the expression of lipid metabolism genes were observed in the colon.

Conclusion

We show that marine n-3 fatty acids regulate small intestinal gene expression and increase fatty acid oxidation. Since this organ contributes significantly to whole organism energy use, this effect on the small intestine may well contribute to the beneficial physiological effects of marine PUFAs under conditions that will normally lead to development of obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes.  相似文献

Intake of linoleic acid (LA) increased etheno-DNA adducts induced by lipid peroxidation (LPO) in white blood cells (WBC) of female but not of male volunteers [J. Nair, C.E. Vaca, I. Velic, M. Mutanen, L.M. Valsta, H. Bartsch, High dietary omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids drastically increase the formation of etheno-DNA adducts in white blood cells of female subjects, Cancer Epidemiol. Biomarkers Prev. 6 (1997) 597-601]. Etheno-adducts were measured in rats gavaged with LA, oleic acid (OA) and saturated fatty acid rich coconut oil for 30 days. DNA from organs and total WBC was analyzed for 1, N(6)-ethenodeoxyadenosine (varepsilondA) and 3, N(4)-ethenodeoxycytidine (varepsilondC) by immunoaffinity/(32)P-postlabeling. Colon was the most affected target with LA-treatment, where etheno-adducts were significantly elevated in both sexes. In WBC both adducts were elevated only in LA-treated females. Unexpectedly, OA treatment enhanced etheno-adduct levels in prostate 3-9 fold. Our results in rodents confirm the gender-specific increase of etheno-adducts in WBC-DNA, likely due to LPO induced by redox-cycling of 4-hydroxyestradiol. Colon was a target for LPO-derived DNA-adducts in both LA-treated male and female rats, supporting their role in omega-6 PUFA induced colon carcinogenesis.  相似文献

The effects of thermal stress and vitamin C were examined on the lipid peroxidation and fatty acid composition in the liver of thornfish. Small thornfish were cultured at 28, 32 and 36 degrees C and then fed diets with 0, 80, 400 and 2000 ppm vitamin C-supplement, respectively, for 8 weeks. Fish fed a diet without vitamin C supplement and cultured at 36 degrees C showed the highest values of hepatosomatic index and malondialdehyde, followed by fish fed a diet without vitamin C supplement and cultured at 32 degrees C. Lipid peroxidation in the liver of fish was elevated by high water temperature and prevented by vitamin C. The % of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in the liver lipid was higher when fish were cultured at the lower water temperature. Vitamin C significantly reduced the % of PUFA and increased the % of saturated fatty acid (SFA) in the liver lipid. The % of SFA in the liver lipid was not affected by water temperature. We conclude that temperature and vitamin C significantly affected the lipid characters of liver in thornfish.  相似文献

Except for epidermis and liver, little is known about endogenous expression of 1-O-acylceramides (1-OACs) in mammalian tissue. Therefore, we screened several organs (brain, lung, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, heart, kidney, thymus, small intestine, and colon) from mice for the presence of 1-OACs by LC-MS2. In most organs, low levels of about 0.25–1.3 pmol 1-OACs/mg wet weight were recorded. Higher levels were detected in liver, small and large intestines, with about 4–13 pmol 1-OACs/mg wet weight. 1-OACs were esterified mainly with palmitic, stearic, or oleic acids. Esterification with saturated very long-chain fatty acids, as in epidermis, was not observed. Western-type diet induced 3-fold increased 1-OAC levels in mice livers while ceramides were unaltered. In a mouse model of Farber disease with a decrease of acid ceramidase activity, we observed a strong, up to 50-fold increase of 1-OACs in lung, thymus, and spleen. In contrast, 1-OAC levels were reduced 0.54-fold in liver. Only in lung 1-OAC levels correlated to changes in ceramide levels - indicating tissue-specific mechanisms of regulation. Glucosylceramide synthase deficiency in liver did not cause changes in 1-OAC or ceramide levels, whereas increased ceramide levels in glucosylceramide synthase-deficient small intestine caused an increase in 1-OAC levels. Deficiency of Dgat1 in mice resulted in a reduction of 1-OACs to 30% in colon, but not in small intestine and liver, going along with constant free ceramides levels. From these data, we conclude that Dgat1 as well as lysosomal lipid metabolism contribute in vivo to homeostatic 1-OAC levels in an organ-specific manner.  相似文献

Most probiotic lactobacilli adhere to intestinal surfaces, a phenomenon influenced by free polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The present study investigated whether free linoleic acid, γ-linolenic acid, arachidonic acid, α-linolenic acid, or docosahexaenoic acid in the growth medium alters the fatty acid composition of lactobacilli and their physical characteristics. The most abundant bacterial fatty acids identified were oleic, vaccenic, and dihydrosterculic acids. PUFA, especially conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers and γ-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic, and α-linolenic acids, also were identified in lactobacilli. When lactobacilli were cultured in MRS broth supplemented with various free PUFA, the incorporation of a given PUFA into bacterial fatty acids was clearly observed. Moreover, PUFA supplementation also resulted in PUFA-dependent changes in the proportions of other fatty acids; major interconversions were seen in octadecanoic acids (18:1), their methylenated derivatives (19:cyc), and CLA. Intermittent changes in eicosapentaenoic acid proportions also were noted. These results were paralleled by minor changes in the hydrophilic or hydrophobic characteristics of lactobacilli, suggesting that PUFA interfere with microbial adhesion to intestinal surfaces through other mechanisms. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that free PUFA in the growth medium induce changes in bacterial fatty acids in relation to the regulation of the degree of fatty acid unsaturation, cyclization, and proportions of CLA and PUFA containing 20 to 22 carbons. We investigated lipid content and fatty acid (FA) composition of gastrointestinal tract contents in free-living, herbivorous European hares (Lepus europaeus). Mean crude fat content in hare stomachs and total gastrointestinal (GI) tracts was higher than expected for typical herbivore forages and peaked in late fall when hares massively deposited body fat reserves. Changes of FA proportions in different parts of the GI-tract indicated a highly preferential absorption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). A further reduction of PUFA content in the caecum, along with the appearance of odd-chained FAs in caecum, caecotrophes, and colon content, pointed to a biohydrogenation of PUFA in the hare’s hindgut. GI-tract contents showed significant seasonal changes in their FA composition. Among PUFA, α-linolenic acid peaked in spring while linoleic acid was predominant in late summer and fall, which probably reflected changes in the plant composition of forage. However, independent of seasonal changes, GI-tracts of lactating females showed a significantly (+33%) higher content of linoleic acid, a FA that is known to increase reproductive performance in European hares. This finding suggests that lactating females actively selected dietary plants rich in linoleic acid, a PUFA that may represent a limited resource for European hares.  相似文献
