Most ground nesters lay pigmented eggs, and egg pigmentation generally matches the environment. Pigmentation of eggs has evolved as a protective device against predation, but dark-pigmented eggs can be susceptible to overheating when exposed to solar radiation. The Ostrich (Struthio camelus) lays white eggs that are unattended for the first few weeks before incubation, and are quite visible to predators. To evaluate the effect of colour on the surface and core temperatures, we painted some Ostrich eggs dark brown or white, and left some unpainted (control), and exposed all of them directly to the sun during the day. The surface and core temperatures of brown eggs were significantly higher than those of the white-painted and control eggs. In addition, the core temperature of brown eggs exceeded 37.5°C, which is the temperature at which embryo mortality starts to increase. In a second experiment, we placed eggs (brown-painted and control) in various types of vegetation to study their visibility to an observer walking towards them. The white eggs were discovered from a significantly longer distance than the brown eggs, indicating that the predation risk may be much higher for white eggs. The results thus suggest that white eggs minimise overheating and allow the Ostrich to leave its eggs unattended before incubation starts, but they are more susceptible to predation.  相似文献

In dendrochronology, ring width has been a variable of choice when assessing the radial growth–climate association of tree species. We compared ring-width and event-year chronologies from a dendroclimatic perspective using both white oak (Quercus alba L.) and northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.). The study was conducted in three regions of the Ottawa valley in southern Québec. Twelve mixed red and white oak stands were selected and for each oak species, 12 chronologies were developed from tree-ring measurement and 12 others were derived using visual assessment of narrow or wide rings (event years). Ring-width and event-year chronologies gave almost identical results and revealed the prevalence of drought in the early growing season as the most influential factor in both species. This study emphasizes the utility of event-year chronologies in tree-ring studies and their comparativeness with ring width. Establishing event-year chronologies has the advantage of being faster than measuring ring width, it does not necessitate complex equipment and depending on the purpose of the study may prove to be at least comparable. The choice of species, their mean sensitivity, the ability to recognize narrow or large rings as well as the number of trees and sites to analyze may, however, be factors to consider when choosing to use event-year chronologies over the more commonly used ring-width ones.  相似文献

Juvenile salmonids experience high mortality when negotiating lentic waters during their downstream migration to the sea. The development of artificial lakes and wetlands in streams has become a widely used management tool to reduce nutrient load to coastal areas. Such wetlands may threaten anadromous populations. In this study we quantify net ground speed of downstream migrating brown trout Salmo trutta smolts in equally long stream and lake sections in a Danish lowland stream and artificial lake. This was done by passive integrated transponder telemetry in 2016 and 2017. Mean net ground speed in the stream section was 36.58 and 0.8 km day−1 in the lake section. This decrease of net ground speed through the lake may lead to prolonged exposure to predators and probably contributes to high mortalities threatening anadromous populations.  相似文献

Data from 46 Florida lakes were used to examine relationships between bird abundance (numbers and biomass) and species richness, and lake trophic status, lake morphology and aquatic macrophyte abundance. Average annual bird numbers ranged from 7 to 800 birds km–2 and bird biomass ranged from 1 to 465 kg km–2. Total species richness ranged from 1 to 30 species per lake. Annual average bird numbers and biomass were positively correlated to lake trophic status as assessed by total phosphorus (r = 0.61), total nitrogen (r = 0.60) and chlorophyll a (r = 0.56) concentrations. Species richness was positively correlated to lake area (r = 0.86) and trophic status (r = 0.64 for total phosphorus concentrations). The percentage of the total annual phosphorus load contributed to 14 Florida lakes by bird populations was low averaging 2.4%. Bird populations using Florida lakes, therefore, do not significantly impact the trophic status of the lakes under natural situations, but lake trophic status is a major factor influencing bird abundance and species richness on lakes. Bird abundance and species richness were not significantly correlated to other lake morphology or aquatic macrophyte parameters after the effects of lake area and trophic status were accounted for using stepwise multiple regression. The lack of significant relations between annual average bird abundance and species richness and macrophyte abundance seems to be related to changes in bird species composition. Bird abundance and species richness remain relatively stable as macrophyte abundance increases, but birds that use open-water habitats (e.g., double-crested cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus) are replaced by species that use macrophyte communities (e.g., ring-necked duck, Aythya collaris).  相似文献

The combined effects of temperature and salinity on growth of Alexandrium monilatum were studied in laboratory cultures. This toxic, red-tide dinoflagellate grew faster with higher temperatures, up to a maximum of approximately 1 division per day at 31 °C. Salinities above 15 psu had a lesser effect on growth rate, as might be expected for an estuarine species. Growth rates of cultures exposed to natural light and temperature fluctuations were comparable to laboratory cultures. The minimum N cell quota suggested that high N flux would be required to support bloom development. A literature survey of documented A. monilatum blooms indicated that within US waters, blooms occur in July–September in nearshore or estuarine regions of the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Atlantic coast. Temperature and salinity measured during blooms correspond to the optimal growth conditions of the laboratory cultures. Nevertheless, the occurrence of A. monilatum blooms is sporadic compared to the occurrence of seemingly optimal growth conditions. Laboratory growth experiments predict when blooms of this species are unlikely due to low growth rates, but so far cannot predict individual blooms.  相似文献

分析了2008年5月采自新疆克孜河264尾叶尔羌高原鳅(Triplophysa yarkandensis)的年龄结构、生长特征和繁殖力。结果显示,种群年龄由2~11龄组成,其中2~4龄组个体占94.49%。平均体长和体重雌性为(9.39±2.10)cm和(16.55±15.85)g,雄性为(9.17±2.27)cm和(15.38±15.20)g,两者在雌雄群体间差异均不显著(P0.05)。体长和体重关系式为W♀+♂=0.014 0L2.988 9(r=0.975 4),W♀=0.016 7L2.889 5(r=0.980 9),W♂=0.011 7L3.083 1(r=0.975 7)。生长指标和年增重均以4龄组最大,分别为1.86和18.79 g/年。雌雄性比为0.7∶1.0。2龄性即成熟。最小成熟体长和体重雌性为6.2 cm和4.46 g,雄性为4.6 cm和1.67 g。绝对怀卵量为6 136~405 555(平均28 716±42 698)粒,相对怀卵量为672~6 134(平均2 310±1 427)粒/g。卵径呈单峰型分布,推测为不分批产卵类型。依据同年8月采集的19尾幼体日龄推算,其繁殖期为5月下旬至6月下旬。  相似文献

In order to evaluate short-term and long-term effects of fish manipulation in shallow, eutrophic lakes, empirical studies on relationships between lake water concentration of total phosphorus (P) and the occurrence of phytoplankton, submerged macrophytes and fish in Danish lakes are combined with results from three whole-lake fish manipulation experiments. After removal of less than 80 per cent of the planktivorous fish stock a short-term trophic cascade was obtained in the nutrient regimes, where large cyanobacteria were not strongly dominant and persistent. In shallow Danish lakes cyanobacteria were the most often dominating phytoplankton class in the P-range between 200 and 1 000μg P l−1. Long-term effects are suggested to be closely related to the ability of the lake to establish a permanent and wide distribution of submerged macrophytes and to create self-perpetuating increases in the ratio of piscivorous to planktivorous fish. The maximum depth at which submerged macrophytes occurred, decreased exponentially with increasing P concentration. Submerged macrophytes were absent in lakes>10 ha and with P levels above 250–300μg P l−1, but still abundant in some lakes<3 ha at 650μg P l−1. Lakes with high cover of submerged macrophytes showed higher transparencies than lakes with low cover aboveca. 50μg P l−1. These results support the alternative stable state hypothesis (clear or turbid water stages). Planktivorous fish>10 cm numerically contributed more than 80 per cent of the total planktivorous and piscivorous fish (>10 cm) in the pelagical of lakes with concentrations above 100μg P l−1. Below this threshold level the proportion of planktivores decreased markedly toca. 50 per cent at 22μg P l−1. The extent of the shift in depth colonization of submerged macrophytes and fish stock composition in the three whole-lake fish manipulations follows closely the predictions from the relationships derived from the empirical study. We conclude that a long-term effect of a reduction in the density of planktivorous fish can be expected only when the external phosphorus loading is reduced to below 0.5–2.0 g m−2 y−1. This loading is equivalent to an in-lake summer concentration below 80–150μg P l−1. Furthermore, fish manipulation as a restoration tool seems most efficient in shallow lakes.  相似文献

Seasonal changes of field populations and growth rates of two dinoflagellates, Ceratium furca and Ceratium fusus, were examined in the temperate coastal water of Sagami Bay, Japan. Weekly field sampling was conducted from August 2002 to August 2003, and laboratory experiments were also carried out to investigate effects of temperature, irradiance and photoperiod on the growth rates of these two Ceratium species. In the field, the abundances of both species increased significantly from April to August 2003, were gradually decreased from November 2002 and were not observed in January 2003. C. fusus was able to increase at lower temperatures in February 2003 compared to C. furca. In the laboratory, the two species did not grow at <10 °C or >32 °C. The highest specific growth rate of C. furca was 0.72 d−1 at 24 °C and 600 μmol m−2 s−1. Optimum growth rates (>0.4 d−1) of C. furca were observed at temperatures from 18 to 28 °C and at irradiances from 216 to 796 μmol m−2 s−1. The highest growth rate of C. fusus was 0.56 d−1 at 26 °C and 216 μmol m−2 s−1. Optimum growth rates of C. fusus were observed at the same irradiance rage of C. furca, whereas optimum temperature range was narrower (26–28 °C). The growth curves of both species indicated saturation of the growth rates when light intensity was above 216 μmol m−2 s−1, and did not show photoinhibition at irradiances up to 796 μmol m−2 s−1. The specific growth rates of both Ceratium species were clearly decreased at L:D = 10:14 relative to those at L:D = 14:10 and L:D = 12:12. The present study indicates the two Ceratium species can adapt to a wide range of temperature and irradiance.  相似文献

Synopsis White suckers,Catastomus commersoni, use olfactory cues to return to the same spawning stream year after year. If we assume that they follow a model similar to the well-known salmon model, olfactory imprinting must occur very early in their development. We describe the time of migration from the nursery stream in relation to the development of the white sucker olfactory system to determine if the requisite anatomical structures are present which would permit imprinting. At hatching the olfactory placode is present and beginning to differentiate, the lumen of the olfactory capsule is starting to form, and the olfactory tract projects into the telencephalon. Larvae migrate approximately 2 weeks later or at a size of 14 mm TL. At this time olfactory cilia are present, the olfactory tract is robust and the telencephalon is beginning to differentiate. Therefore, it appears that the fundamental neural structures necessary for imprinting are present. A comparison with salmon, however, clearly demonstrates that the white sucker olfactory apparatus is not as well developed as that of salmon at time of migration. This raises the question of the ability of white suckers to imprint in the same manner as salmon and whether the salmonid model is applicable to white suckers. Alternative imprinting hypotheses are discussed.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria of genus Microcystis sp. have been commonly found in Lake Erie waters during recent summer seasons. In an effort to elucidate relationships between microcystin production, genotypic composition of Microcystis community and environmental parameters in a large lake ecosystem, we collected DNA samples and environmental data during a three-year (2003–2005) survey within Lake Erie and used the data to perform a series of correlation analyses. Cyanobacteria and Microcystis genotypes were quantified using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Our data show that Microcystis in Lake Erie forms up to 42% of all cyanobacteria, and that Microcystis exists as a mixed population of potentially toxic and (primarily) non-toxic genotypes. In the entire lake, the total abundance of Microcystis as well as the abundance of microcystin-producing Microcystis is strongly correlated with the abundance of cyanobacteria suggesting that Microcystis is a significant component of the cyanobacterial community in Lake Erie during summer seasons. The proportion of total Microcystis of all cyanobacteria was strongly linked to the microcystin concentrations, while the percentage of microcystin-producing genotypes within Microcystis population showed no correlation with microcystin concentrations. Correlation analysis indicated that increasing total phosphorus concentrations correlate strongly with increasing microcystin concentrations as well as with the total abundance of Microcystis and microcystin-producing Microcystis.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of different sampling and processing methods on metabolite concentrations [glycogen (Gly), glucose (Glu), lactate (Lac), pyruvate (Pyr), ammonia (Amm), creatine phosphate (PCr), creatine (Cr), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)] measured in white muscle of rainbow trout at rest and immediately after exhaustive exercise. When samples were taken from resting fish by rapid needle biopsy (without anaesthesia), direct freezing of the needles in liquid N2 yielded lower Lac and Glu levels than if the muscle cores were quickly blown out into liquid N2. However, killing of the fish by an overdose of MS-222 followed by freeze-clamping of excised muscle was superior to the biopsy method in preserving high levels of PCr and Gly (91 and 62% higher, respectively). In parallel, the MS-222 method also yielded lower levels of Amm (80%) and Lac (47%). Samples freeze-clamped by the MS-222 method were used to evaluate three methods of subsequent processing for enzymatic analysis of metabolites: classic glass homogenization (GH) in 8% perchloric acid (PCA) c. mortar and pestle (MP) pulverization or freeze-drying (FD) prior to PCA extraction. For all metabolites, GH and MP methods produced similar values. However, the FD technique yielded 20% higher PCr levels which represented over 80% phosphorylation of the total Cr pool at rest, the highest ever reported via enzymatic analysis. Glu was also higher by FD, bul Gly, Lac, and ATP were not affected. Indeed ATP was relatively stable throughout all sampling and processing procedures. MP, GH, MP&GH combination, and high speed motor driven grinding techniques all yielded similar Amm levels in resting muscle. However, tests demonstrated that even brief thawing of tissue greatly elevated Amm, while FD resulted in artificially low Amm values due to evaporative losses during lyophilization. Overall, muscle sampling by freeze-clamping on trout killed by MS-222 overdose, followed by FD prior to PCA extraction, appears to be the best combination for the measurement of all white muscle metabolites except Amm, for which MP or GH are preferable.  相似文献

The influence of the physical state of the membrane on the swimming behaviour of Tetrahymena pyriformis was studied in cells with lipid-modified membranes. When the growth temperature of Tetrahymena cells was increased from 15°C to 34°C or decreased from 39°C to 15°C, their swimming velocity changed gradually in a similar to the adaptive change in membrane lipid composition. Therefore, such adaptive changes in swimming velocity were not observed during short exposures to a different environment. Tetrahymena cells adapted to 34°C swam at 570 μm/s. On incubation at 15°C these cells swam at 100 μm/s. When the temperature was increased to 34°C after a 90-min incubation at 15°C, the initial velocity was immediately recovered. On replacement of tetrahymanol with ergosterol, the swimming velocity of 34°C-grown cells decreased to 210 μm/s, and the cells ceased to move when the temperature was decreased to 15°C. To investigate the influence of the physical state of the membrane on the swimming velocity, total phospholipids were prepared from Tetrahymena cells grown under these different conditions. The fluidities of liposomes of these phospholipid were measured using stearate spin probe. The membrane fluidity of the cells cooled to 15°C increased gradually during incubation at 15°C. On the other hand, the fluidity of the heated cell decreased during incubation at 34°C. Replacement of tetrahymanol with ergosterol decreased the membrane fluidity markedly. Consequently, a good correlation was observed between swimming velocity and membrane fluidity; as the membrane fluidity increased, the swimming velocity increased linearly up to 600 μm/s. These results provide evidence for the regulation of the swimming behaviour by physical properties of the membrane.  相似文献

There has been no consensus on whether Prorocentrum minimum is “toxic,” despite sporadic reports suggesting possible shellfish toxicity and laboratory studies showing harmful effects of this dinoflagellate on molluscan shellfish. Shellfish toxicity outbreaks associated with natural blooms of P. minimum have been confounded by co-occurrence of other toxic phytoplankton. Laboratory studies have demonstrated unequivocally that some P. minimum isolates can produce toxins that kill mice on injection, but the bioactive compound or compounds remain unidentified, and accumulation of toxin in grazing mollusks has not been demonstrated. Laboratory experiments testing the responses of grazing mollusks to P. minimum cultures have yielded variable results, ranging from mortality in scallops and oysters to normal growth of oysters. Effects observed in the laboratory include rejection as pseudofeces by clams, poor larval development in oysters, tissue pathologies (sometimes transient) in oysters and scallops, and systemic immune responses in oysters and scallops. Several recent studies have provided evidence that variation in toxicity of P. minimum is dependent on environmental conditions and their effects on the physiology of this dinoflagellate. Accordingly, seemingly conflicting observations from field and laboratory studies may be explained by transient toxin expression in P. minimum.  相似文献

Replication banding technique was applied to the chromosomes of Salmo salar, Salmo trutta, and Oncorhynchus mykiss. The in vitro technique has proved more advantageous than the in vivo technique due to a higher number of bands obtained. The comparison of these replication banding patterns has revealed that some chromosomes of Salmo trutta karyotype appeared associated with Salmo salar and Oncorhynchus mykiss karyotypes by single chromosomal rearrangements.  相似文献

橡胶树(Heveabrasiliensis)种子催芽生长一般使用沙床培育,沙子是不可再生资源,为了选择一种适合橡胶树种子培育方式来替代对沙子的依赖,该研究通过水培、悬空培育和传统的沙培比较橡胶树实生苗第1蓬叶稳定时,苗木的生长势、生理指标及养分含量。结果表明,水培实生苗地上部株高、茎粗、叶面积的长势最佳,壮苗指数和生物量的含量最高,但其根太长,根相对较细。水培的叶、茎、根的可溶性糖、丙二醛、游离脯氨酸、超氧化物歧化酶的含量均较低;水培和悬空培育的叶片和茎的叶绿素、类胡萝卜素及根系活力的含量没有显著性差异,均高于沙培。水培的叶、茎、根中的氮和磷含量最低,沙培的最高;而水培实生苗根和茎中钾的含量较高,叶片中含量与悬空培育、沙培均没有显著性差异;悬空培育在叶、茎、根中钾的含量最低。水培促进了苗木的生长,降低干旱胁迫,提高养分利用率,但后续还需调控根系,建设良好根团。悬空培育的苗木长势较弱,还需进一步完善方法。  相似文献

Lake Bourget (France) provides drinking water and is a place for professional and recreational fishing. Since the mid 1990s, the lake has been exhibiting blooms of the filamentous cyanobacterium Planktothrix rubescens. This species is able to produce microcystin-LR and RR, toxins that contaminate different fish tissues and, if concentrated in the liver, can induce fish mortality. However, data on fish exposure to these toxins in a natural environment are scare and comparisons of spatial distribution between P. rubescens and exploited fish are needed to determine whether these fish avoid or converge in zones affected by the cyanobacteria. From June to November 2009, diurnal data on P. rubescens and whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) spatial distributions have been monitored by hydroacoustic and BBE probe sampling. For all water samples, intracellular microcystin concentration of P. rubescens was quantified by HPLC/PDA. Furthermore, an arbitrary sample of eight whitefish captured at the moment of highest P. rubescens concentration in the lake were analyzed to investigate both the presence of this cyanobacterium in the gastrointestinal tract by optical microscopy and the possible bioaccumulation of the microcystin in their tissues by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Results show that P. rubescens abundance was at a maximum between the end of July and the beginning of September. During this period, P. rubescens abundance was vertically stratified with a maximum around 14–22 m, depending on the sampling station. The horizontal distributions of P. rubescens were heterogeneous at the scale of the lake. Results indicate that the presence of P. rubescens, for the observed cyanobacterial abundance, does not exert a significant pressure on the distribution pattern of the whitefish. Whitefish were present in the same areas as P. rubescens maxima during daytime, and they do not avoid or seek out the zone of high P. rubescens abundance. Filaments of P. rubescens have been observed in intestinal tracts of whitefish and the presence of microcystin-LR has been detected in their intestine and liver. Consequently, because of a direct contact between these organisms, toxins can be incorporated into whitefish by ingestion of P. rubescens filaments, leading to potential adverse effects on the health of this species.  相似文献

Annual variations in nutrients, algal biomass, and primary production were investigated in Lake Ohnuma, Japan, in 1996 in order to compare them with 1977. Chlorophyll a concentrations gradually increased after the ice melted and reached a maximal value of 20.7 μg l−1 in August. Phosphate concentrations in the lake were close to the detection limit throughout the study period, whereas sufficient nitrate remained even in the productive summer season. In contrast, in the summer of 1977, both nutrients were exhausted, and primary production was less than 0.2 g C m−2 day−1. Primary production in 1996 ranged from 0.4 to 5.8 g C m−2 day−1, which was 2 to 30 times higher than 20 years ago. These results indicate that the lake has become eutrophic in the last two decades. A comparison of the nutrients in the inflowing river between 1977 and 1996 indicated that nitrate and ammonium concentrations were markedly elevated in the rivers, and therefore the nitrogen loading to the lake tripled. Stable oxygen isotope analyses of U-shaped spines removed at intervals along profiles of the outer shell surface of Pinna nobilis (L) were used to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) and validate the periodicity of adductor muscle scar rings on the inner shell surface. Elemental ratios (Mg:Ca and Sr:Ca) of spines, determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), were compared with the SST estimated from the stable oxygen isotopic composition of the shell deposited at the same time. The elemental ratios and the stable oxygen isotopic composition recorded in the shell were significantly correlated: Mg:Ca ratio=0.0002 (seawater temperature)+0.0095 (r2=0.445), Sr:Ca ratio=0.00005 (seawater temperature)+0.0014 (r2=0.887). The ratios in the spines were highest when the SST was warmest during July and August and were lowest between January and February when the SST was minimal.The positions of the first and second adductor muscle scar rings, unlike the later rings, are often difficult to discern, and in large shells they are obscured by nacre. Seasonal patterns in the elemental ratios were used to characterise the age in regions of the outer shell surface corresponding to the first two years of shell growth. A combination of both elemental ratios and muscle scar rings were used to estimate the age and hence the growth rate of P. nobilis from three locations in the Croatian Adriatic. Annual cycles of shell growth, inferred from the seasonal pattern in the element ratios, were used to determine the season of recruitment of fan mussels at several localities along the Croatian coastline. Pinnids generally settled during late autumn and winter although one shell from Mali Ston Bay settled during the summer. P. nobilis from Mali Ston Bay exhibited the fastest growth reaching a length of ∼60 cm and an age of 9 years, whereas those from Malo jezero grew the slowest attaining a length of ∼50 cm at 12 years of age.  相似文献

C and N stable isotope ratios of red deer (Cervus elaphus) bone collagen (154 individuals) from five modern populations occupying geographically different habitats are reported. No significant difference was observed between deer occupying forested and non-forested environments subject to similar climatic conditions suggesting a simple “canopy effect” is not observed. Mean population δ13C is negatively correlated with temperature whereas mean population δ15N is positively correlated with temperature. A weak but significant positive correlation was observed between deer age and collagen δ13C values from the Isle of Rum population (Scotland). The amount of intra-population isotope variability is not consistent among populations; thus significant numbers of individuals from each species are required for modern food web studies, for palaeodietary baseline data, and for palaeoecological studies.  相似文献

Parasite communities of perch were studied in a natural lake (Vetämäjärvi) and two reservoirs (the Kyrkösjärvi and Liikapuro reservoirs) located in Western Finland. All water bodies studied are small, shallow and humic. However, the reservoirs are more acidic than the lake (pH 5.9 and 5.3 vs. 6.4). Altogether, 18 parasite species were found, but the component communities were reduced in the harsh conditions of the reservoirs (12 and six species) as compared with the lake (17 species). In addition, the mean number of metazoan parasite specimens per fish was markedly lower in the reservoirs (64.3 and 14.3 specimens) than in the lake (116.1 specimens). Our prediction on the depauperation of parasite communities in reservoirs as compared with the lake was confirmed. Many ectoparasite groups were rare and most of the digenean parasites using molluscs as their intermediate host were absent from the reservoirs due to the inability of molluscs to tolerate the acidic water. The only digenean parasite found in the less acidic reservoir was Bunodera luciopercae. There were also species that preferred reservoirs as was expected. The protozoan ciliate Capriniana piscium benefiting acidic water and Acanthocephalus lucii, due to the abundance of its intermediate host, were most prevalent in the reservoir conditions.  相似文献
