Eriopis connexa (Germar) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an important predator with potential for biological control of insect pests. This research evaluated the development of E. connexa larvae fed on fresh eggs of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) without (T1) or with (T2) scales or one-day (T3) or six-month (T4) frozen, or newly-hatched larvae of S. frugiperda (T5). The percentage of E. connexa adults was higher when larvae feeding on fresh S. frugiperda eggs with or without scales, or one-day frozen eggs of this prey and lower with eggs of this Lepidoptera after frozen for six months or with newly-hatched larvae of S. frugiperda. Duration of the larval period of E. connexa was 15.7, 15.8, 16.0, 17.6, and 17.3 days, respectively, with these diets. The high survival of E. connexa fed with eggs of S. frugiperda shows the potential use of this prey in the laboratory to maintain this natural enemy.  相似文献

Members of the spider families Thomisidae, Salticidae, Miturgidae, Anyphaenidae, and Corinnidae have been observed on floral and extrafloral nectaries of plants, where they are presumably feeding on nectar. Nectar feeding is a phenomenon that has long intrigued biologists. However, few studies have focused on the effect of nectar on biological characteristics of these spiders. The aim of this study was to determine whether crab spiders, Ebrechtella tricuspidata (Fabricius) (Araneae: Thomisidae), show an active preference for honey solution (a simulated nectar source) and to test the effect of honey solution on the survival and development time of spiderlings and the fecundity of adult E. tricuspidata. The results showed that the number of females feeding on the 10, 20, and 30% honey solution was significantly higher than those feeding on water alone, and there was no difference in the number of females feeding on the three concentrations of honey solution. Significantly more E. tricuspidata preferred feeding on the 20% honey solution, and they spent significantly more time feeding on 20% honey solution than on water, regardless of whether they were males or females, adults or spiderlings. Ingestion of honey solution significantly increased the survival and shortened the development time of E. tricuspidata. Female spiders that fed on honey solution had a shorter pre‐oviposition period and laid more eggs than those given only water. Our results suggest that nectar could be a high‐quality supplementary food to maintain normal growth and metabolism in spiderlings and adult female spiders in nature.  相似文献

The lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer) is a natural enemy of several insect pests and feeds on pollen and nectar to survive periods when prey is scarce. The effect of the feeding interval on the development, survival, fecundity, and longevity of C. maculata was determined. Newly hatched larvae of C. maculata were reared individually and fed with eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) at intervals of one, two, and three days under controlled conditions (23 ± 1oC; 60 ± 10% RH; 12 h phtophase). The duration of larval instars and the total larval stage was prolonged as the feeding interval increased. The larval period lasted on average 9.2 ± 0.19 days when the larvae were fed daily with prey, and 14.6 ± 0.48 days when food was offered at three-day intervals. There was an inverse relationship between food intervals, survival, and weight of larvae and adults of the coccinellid. Survival rate of larvae fed daily was 76.8%, while the rate was 50.0% and 23.4% for larvae fed every two and three days, respectively. Coleomegilla maculata showed fecundity of 781.1 ± 149.02, 563.4 ± 80.81 and 109.0 ± 103.0 eggs when fed daily and at intervals of two and three days, respectively.  相似文献

A central issue in predator–prey interactions is how predator associated chemical cues affect the behaviour and life history of prey. In this study, we investigated how growth and behaviour during ontogeny of a damselfly larva (Coenagrion hastulatum) in high and low food environments was affected by the diet of a predator (Aeshna juncea). We reared larvae in three different predator treatments; no predator, predator feeding on conspecifics and predator feeding on heterospecifics. We found that, independent of food availability, larvae displayed the strongest anti-predator behaviours where predators consumed prey conspecifics. Interestingly, the effect of predator diet on prey activity was only present early in ontogeny, whereas late in ontogeny no difference in prey activity between treatments could be found. In contrast, the significant effect of predator diet on prey spatial distribution was unaffected by time. Larval size was affected by both food availability and predator diet. Larvae reared in the high food treatment grew larger than larvae in the low food treatment. Mean larval size was smallest in the treatment where predators consumed prey conspecifics, intermediate where predators consumed heterospecifics and largest in the treatment without predators. The difference in mean larval size between treatments is probably an effect of reduced larval feeding, due to behavioural responses to chemical cues associated with predator diet. Our study suggests that anti-predator responses can be specific for certain stages in ontogeny. This finding shows the importance of considering where in its ontogeny a study organism is before results are interpreted and generalisations are made. Furthermore, this finding accentuates the importance of long-term studies and may have implications for how results generated by short-term studies can be used.  相似文献

Rearing techniques and results of preliminary host range tests are reported forHadena perplexa (Denis & Schiffermuller) (Lep.: Phalaenidae) a candidate biocontrol agent against the weed bladder campion,Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke, in Manitoba, Canada. In the laboratory, it was necessary to pipette a 15% honey solution in water into the flowers as food for the adult moths. When reared singly to avoid cannibalism, 56% of the 1st instar larvae developed to pupae. Larvae fed on a natural diet for 10 days can then be reared on either one of 2 artificial diets. Choice oviposition tests and no-choice larval feeding tests were conducted with plant species closely related toS. vulgaris in the generaSilene, Dianthus, Gypsophila, Lychnis, Saponaria. Species in 4 of 5 of these genera were accepted for oviposition, and species in all 5 genera supported the development of 1st instar larvae to the pupal stage.H. perplexa should not be introduced into Canada.   相似文献

The malacophagous feeding behaviour of larvae of members of the family Sciomyzidae makes the group ideal for the selection of potential biological control agents of snail hosts of trematode diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of temperature (14 °C, 17 °C, 20 °C, 23 °C, and 26 °C) on the pupal and adult stages of Sepedon spinipes spinipes (Scopoli) (Diptera: Sciomyzidae). Larval prey density effects on the pupal stage and the extent of sexual dimorphism within the species are also assessed. Optimum growth conditions for the pupal stage and pre‐oviposition/oviposition periods, and female fecundity are identified for mass culturing purposes. The tendency of mature third instar larvae to engage in wandering behaviour is highlighted, and the biological control implications of such behaviour are discussed. Female puparia were significantly (P<0.001) heavier than males for both larval prey densities. Such sexual dimorphism would enable the prediction of adult sex from puparial weight prior to eclosion, thereby facilitating culture establishment. The effect of three food types [honey/yeast mixture only, crushed Radix balthica (L.) (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Lymnaeidae) only, and honey/yeast mixture plus a crushed snail] on adult longevity (laboratory conditions) was also determined and the results suggest that adults live longest when provided with a crushed snail and a honey/yeast mixture.  相似文献

Adult ladybirds are likely to encounter various species of prey when foraging for oviposition sites. Optimal oviposition theory predicts that females should lay eggs in those sites that are the most suitable for offspring development. Therefore, factors that directly affect offspring mortality, such as the presence of predators and food, are expected to play an important role in the assessment of patch profitability by ladybird predators. Using a Y‐tube olfactometer, we tested whether the predatory ladybird Cycloneda sanguinea L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) can use volatile cues to assess patch profitability and avoid predator‐rich patches. We assessed the foraging behaviour of C. sanguinea in response to odours associated with tomato plants infested with a superior prey, Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas (Homoptera: Aphididae), and with an inferior prey, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard (Acari: Tetranychidae), in the presence or absence of the heterospecific predator Eriopis connexa Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Females of C. sanguinea significantly preferred plants infested by M. euphorbiae to plants infested by T. evansi and avoided odours emanating from plants on which E. connexa females were present. Our results show that C. sanguinea use volatile cues to assess patch profitability and to avoid patches with heterospecific competitors or intraguild predators.  相似文献

Six phytophagous mites, maize pollen, and two artificial diets were fed to Amblyseius ovalis to evaluate their food suitability for the predator. The parafilm diet-chip of Hager and Tassan was adopted for artificial diet studies. The floating leaf method was the best among all tested methods, producing high survival, developmental, and reproductive rates of the predator. Offspring of A. ovalis fecding on artificial diets did not complete their life cycles. A. ovalis feeding on E. orientalis, O. mangiferus, ad O. taiwanicus developed into adult form faster than those feeding on other food resources. Predators feeding on the natural food, except those feeding on T. kanzawai, had much higher immatural survival rates, lower escape rates, and shorter developmental durations than those feeding on the artificial diets.All A. ovalis laid an average of two eggs per female per day after 2 days of preoviposition, except for those feeding on T. kanzawai which produced none. A. ovalis feeding on artificial diets showed a shorter oviposition period, lower daily and total reproductive rates, and shorter longevity. The complicated webbing life type of T. kanzawai inhibited the activities of A. ovalis, indicating that the predators may require nutrients other than T. kanzawai eggs to molt into adults and to reproduce. The functions varying the phytoseiid-tetranychid relationship during the predator's approach to the microhabitat of the prey were postulated from the predator's structures and the prey's life type. Most predator eggs were laid by 2–18 day-old females feeding on natural food resources. A. ovalis retained its high activity on the low webbing habitats of O. mangiferus and E. orientalis, and on maize pollen. The intrinsic rate of increase, mean generation time, and net reproductive rate of A. ovalis on each of nine tested food resources were evaluated from its life tables. The predator showed the highest intrinsic rates of increase when feeding on the prey of E. orientalis, O. mangiferus, and on maize pollen, and the lowest rates when feeding on the artificial diet even when the immatures had fed on the O. mangiferus and maize pollen. Consequently, the optimal food resources for A. ovalis appear to be O. mangiferus or O. oriintalis with supplements of maize pollen. When fed on these food resources, the predators demonstrated the highest rates of survival, longevity, fecundity, and intrinsic increase.  相似文献

1. Population dynamics and feeding ecology of adult and larval alpine newts (Triturus alpestris, Laurenti) were investigated in a high-altitude karts lake to estimate their feeding pressure on the copepod Arctodiaptomus alpinuf (Imhof). Estimates of population size for reproducing adults ranged from 666 to 864 individuals in the lake during July and August. Total abundance of larvae before the onset of ice cover varied considerably between 4400 and 25400 individuals in different years. 2. Arctodiaptomus alpinus was an important prey item for adult and larval alpine newts. During the second half of their aquatic period, adult newts moved to deeper water where the copepod reached its highest densities near the sediment. Adults and larvae exhibited no periodic feeding pattern. The feeding rhythm was more synchronized among the larvae than among the adults. 3. Daily food consumption, estimated using the Elliott & Persson (1978) model, reached 4–21 mg dry biomass in adults. The daily ration of larvae was about 7% of body dry weight in the temperature range 6-11°C. Compared to published estimates of daily food consumption in salmonid fishes, the feeding pressure of newts appears low.  相似文献

The number of eggs laid by the predator female and the consumption ofTetranychus urticae Koch as prey increased with increasing prey density to maximum averages of 2.3 deposited eggs and 5.8 devoured larvae per day at a prey density of 7 larvae. 1. Prey organisms can perceive cues to predation hazard and adopt low‐risk behaviours to increase survival. Animals with complex life cycles, such as insects, can exhibit such anti‐predatory behaviours in multiple life stages. 2. Cues to predation risk may induce ovipositing females to choose habitats with low predation risk. Cues to predation risk may also induce larvae to adopt facultative behaviours that reduce risk of predation. 3. One hypothesis postulates that anti‐predation behaviours across adult and larval stages may be negatively associated because selection for effective anti‐predator behaviour in one stage leads to reduced selection for avoidance of predators in other stages. An alternative hypothesis suggests that selection by predation favours multi‐component defences, with both avoidance of oviposition and facultative adoption of low‐risk behaviours by larvae. 4. Laboratory and field experiments were used to determine whether defensive responses of adult and larval mosquitoes are positively or negatively associated. The study tested effects of waterborne cues from predatory Toxorhynchites theobaldi on oviposition choices and larval behaviours of three of its common prey: Culex mollis, Limatus durhamii and Aedes albopictus. 5. Culex mollis shows strong anti‐predator responses in both life stages, consistent with the hypothesis of a multi‐component behavioural defence. The other two species showed no detectable responses to waterborne predator cues in either adult or larval stages. Larvae of these unresponsive species were significantly more vulnerable to this predator than was C. mollis. 6. For these mosquitoes, species appear either to have been selected for multi‐component defences against predation or to act in ways that could be called predator‐naïve.  相似文献

Preference tests using the hemipteran predator Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff showed that nymphs and adults showed a constant preference towards virus-infected Spodoptera litura larvae. Adults feeding on healthy larvae throughout their life handled and consumed their prey quickly as compared to those feeding on infected prey, the differences being significant. Developmental time, survival rate, pre-mating period, sex-ratio and incubation period of E. furcellata that were reared on experimental plants infested with healthy larvae of S. litura as lifetime prey for all stages (control), healthy larvae during nymphal stage and infected larvae for adult stage, infected larvae for nymphal and healthy larvae for adult stage and infected larvae as lifetime meal for all stages of E. furcellata did not vary significantly. However, a significant reduction in body weight, fecundity, longevity and percent egg hatchability was observed when E. furcellata were fed on infected larvae as lifetime meal. The results revealed that the virus-infected larvae, relative to healthy larvae, had significant effect on prey preference of predators, but feeding on virus-infected prey had no adverse effect on its field fitness except on lifetime meal, which may not hold true under field conditions.  相似文献

Temperature had various effects on the predacious efficacy of immature and mature stages of the coccinellid predator, Stethorus punctillum on the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae. In the case of immature stages, food consumption at the lowest tested temperature (15°C) was significantly higher than that at higher temperatures (25 and 35°C). On the contrary, positive correlation between food consumption and temperature was evaluated in the case of adult predator. Regarding predator responses to different prey density, a high positive correlation between food consumption and prey density was evaluated among 4th instar larvae of the predator, followed by adult predator, while younger instars did not show reasonable increases with increasing prey densities. These results confirm that larval and adult stages of S. punctillum exhibit “Type II” functional response. In conclusion, the 4th instar larvae and adult predator are the most preferable stages in winter and summer crops to control T. urticae, respectively.  相似文献

Alternative feeding strategies are important in determining the lifestyle of polyphagous spider mite prodators, and could play a key role in their use for biocontrol of prey such as thrips. The small size of Amblyseius cucumeris relative to western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, limits its survival and development when this prey is the only food available. We show that when A. cucumeris nymphs were reared either alone or with a gravid female on live larvae of F. occidentalis as the only source of food, survival was increased and development was accelerated by the presence of the adult. Similar performance by predator nymphs reared alone on freshly killed thrips larvae indicated that those nymphs reared on live prey with an adult were benefiting from feeding on prey killed by the adult. Variation of the period when an adult female was present with the nymph showed that food provided as a result of the adult's preying activities was beneficial until approximately one third through nymphal development, after which protonymphs became independent predators, with good survival and rapid development when provided only with live F. occidentalis larvae. The results are discussed in relation to adult dispersal in specialist as opposed to generalist phytoseiids, and its potential manipulation in using A. cucumeris for thrips biocontrol.  相似文献

We investigated the addition of a trophic level to a simple food web. Direct and indirect effects caused by the presence of a new species in the food web were quantified by estimating survival and consumption rates on the basal resource. We focused on a blowfly intraguild prey–predator system with various ecological interactions taking place during the larval period. The experiments were designed to set Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) as the intraguild prey and Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) as the intraguild predator and/or cannibal. The generalist pupal parasitoid Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) was introduced into the system during a non‐susceptible life stage of the interacting blowfly species. The cascading parasitoid effects induced behavioral changes in the blowfly larvae, increasing the impact of intraguild predation and cannibalism on blowfly survival. The results suggest that blowfly larvae can change their feeding behavior in response to the presence of a parasitoid.  相似文献

Cannibalism (CANN) and intraguild predation (IGP) may provide energy and nutrients to individuals and eliminate potential competitors. These negative competitive interactions could also affect the coexistence of predatory species. The co‐occurrence of aphidophagous ladybird species in crops creates opportunities for CANN and IGP, especially when aphids become scarce. The Lotka–Volterra model predicts the coexistence of two species if intraspecific competition is stronger than interspecific interference interactions. Cycloneda sanguinea L. and Eriopis connexa (Germar) (both Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) coexist in sweet pepper crops in La Plata (Argentina) consuming mainly Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The present study used laboratory experiments to estimate levels of CANN and IGP by adults and larvae on eggs, and by adults on larvae, in both the presence and absence of prey (i.e., M. persicae), to explain the effect of prey on coexistence of these two predators. Levels of CANN by C. sanguinea and E. connexa were high in the absence of aphids, and decreased when prey was present. Intraguild predation was bidirectional and asymmetric. Adults and larvae of E. connexa were more voracious IG predators of C. sanguinea than vice versa, the former being the stronger IG predator and interference competitor. Eriopis connexa always won when larvae of the same instar were compared, whereas the larger larva always won when larvae were of different instars, regardless of species. In the presence of prey, CANN by both species decreased, but IGP by E. connexa on C. sanguinea remained high, suggesting that E. connexa could displace C. sanguinea via interspecific interference competition. Other factors potentially affecting the coexistence of C. sanguinea and E. connexa in sweet pepper crops are discussed.  相似文献

The eulophid parasitoid, Euplectrus maternus, is a gregarious ectoparasitoid of the larvae of thefruit-piercing moth, Eudocima (Othreis) fullonia. This parasitoid is indigenous to India and was released into Guam in 1998–99 to aid in the biological control of E. fullonia, an important pest of ripeguava, banana, mango, pomegranate, litchi,papaya, tomato, orange and other fruit crops.In the laboratory, biology and rearing of E. maternus on the larvae of E. fulloniawere studied. In no-choice tests, ovipositionby E. maternus was significantly greateron first and second instar larvae than on thirdinstar larvae. However, in free-choice tests,oviposition by E. maternus wassignificantly greater on second instar larvae,followed by first and third instar larvae. Thisparasitoid did not lay eggs on later instars,either in no-choice or free-choice tests.Females laid a significantly greater number ofeggs (>80%) on the dorsal surface of thelarvae than on either lateral or ventralsurfaces (1 to 8%). In general, more eggs werelaid on abdominal segments 1–3 on larvalinstars one to three. The survival of theimmature stages (from egg to adult) of E. maternus on second instar E. fullonialarvae was 61%, which was significantlygreater than the survival rates on first andthird instar larvae (32% and 26%), indicatingthat second instar host larvae are ideal formass rearing of the parasitoid. Mated femaleE. maternus continuously laid eggs on thesecond instar larvae of E. fullonia forup to 30 days, but the greatest number of eggswere laid during the first week after exposure.When E. maternus laid more than two eggson host larva, more female progeny wereproduced, indicating female-biasedreproduction. Adult parasitoids lived longerwhen fed with a honey: water (50% w/v)solution than with pure honey. Similarly, thefecundity of females increased significantlywhen fed with the honey-water solution whencompared to feeding with pure honey. To date,E. maternus has not established in Guam.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 This paper investigates the behaviour, in the laboratory, of a forager simultaneously confronted with the conflicting needs to feed and to avoid predators. The foragers were larvae of the damselfly Ischnura elegans Van der Linden, feeding on Daphnia magna Strauss. The predators were adult females of Notonecta glauca L.
  • 2 Patch choice by Ischnura larvae was significantly modified by the presence of predators. Larvae moved to feed in patches of high prey density when predators were absent but preferred dense cover, even though virtually no prey were available, when predators were present. This behaviour was not altered by hunger, up to 12 days without food. In other words, Ischnura larvae were risk averse in their foraging behaviour.
  • 3 In experiments with abundant prey available, the feeding rates of Ischnura larvae confined to a single patch were also significantly reduced by the presence of hydrodynamically and chemically detectable predators. Predators detectable only by vision had little effect.
  • 4 Calculations made from published data show that reduced larval feeding rates can lead to slower growth and development and prolonged instar durations in Ischnura elegans larvae. This may have important consequences for larval survival and adult reproductive fitness.

  • 1 The foraging movements of late instar Ischnura elegans larvae were monitored in laboratory experiments to study the effects of predators on larval feeding behaviour.
  • 2 Ischnura larvae are sit-atid-wait, or ambush, foragers, moving occasionally between perches in search of profitable feeding sites. Larval foraging movements, monitored at different densities of Daphnia prey, increased significantly when prey were absent.
  • 3 In experiments without prey, larval movement was inhibited by the presence of fish predators, as well as by invertebrate predators (Notonecta glauca), but not by closely related, non-predatory invertebrates (Corixa punctata) or physical disturbance of the water (intermittent air bubbles).
  • 4 Further experiments varied Ischnura hunger levels (0–8 days without food) and illumination (light or dark) with and without notonectid predators. Hunger had no consistent effect on penultimate instar behaviour but final instar foraging activity was significantly modified: movements increased after 4 days starvation and decreased again after 8 days. This response was suppressed by the presence of predators. Both larval instars moved significantly less often in the light, even when predators were absent.
  • 5 These phenotypically flexible predator-avoidance responses are likely to decrease the risk of predation by both visual and tactile predators. However, predators clearly have an important influence on the feeding niche of Ischnura larvae, and may decrease the overall feeding efficiency, growth rate, and survival of larvae by constraining their movement in search of profitable feeding sites.

The oviposition deterrent effect of water extract of Spodoptera littoralis and Agrotis ipsilon larval frass on Phthorimaea operculella adult females was studied using two types of larval food “Natural host and Semi-artificial diet” under laboratory and storage simulation (semi-field) conditions. Extracted frass of fed larvae on semi-artificial diet showed complete oviposition deterrent effect at treatments with 4th, 5th and 6th instars of S. littoralis, also at treatments with 1st–3rd and 6th instars of A. ipsilon, while the same effect was observed when the larvae fed on castor oil leaves as a natural host only at treatment with frass extract of A. ipsilon 6th instar larvae. Presence of low amounts of phenols and flavonoids in water extract of A. ipsilon larval frass resulted in relatively more effect as oviposition deterrent to fertile adult females on treated oviposition sites, while the opposite effect was obtained in S. littoralis larval frass experiments. At semi-field experiments, the percentage reduction of laid eggs reached 100% after two?days at treatments with frass extracts of 4th and 5th S. littoralis larval instars and A. ipsilon 6th instar larvae fed on semi-artificial diet and/or castor oil leaves. Percentage reduction of laid eggs for untreated sacks reached 93.24 and 48.95% after 2 and 30?days, respectively, when placed between treated sacks, in comparison with the mean number of laid eggs for isolated control.  相似文献
