Photoperiodic regulation of reproductive diapause in two invasive and two native populations of Harmonia axyridis and in one native population of Harmonia yedoensis was investigated in laboratory at 20°C, five photoperiods (day length of 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 h) and two diets: (i) eggs of the Angoumois grain moth Sitotroga cerealella and (ii) the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. Laboratory strains originated from native populations of H. axyridis from Irkutsk province of Siberia and H. yedoensis from South Korea showed a strong photoperiodic response: under short photoperiods (10–14 h and 10–12 h for H. axyridis and H. yedoensis, correspondingly), all females which fed on eggs and most of those fed on aphids did not start to lay eggs during 40 days after emergence, while under long photoperiods, all females fed on aphids and most of those fed on eggs oviposited. The photoperiodic response of Haxyridis from South Korea was less strong: on the both diets, the range of the photoperiodic response (the difference in the proportion of ovipositing females between the treatments with long and short days) was ca 40%. In the European (Czech Republic) and in the Caucasian (Sochi region, Russia) invasive populations of H. axyridis, the photoperiodic response was very weak: the proportion of females that started oviposition (when fed on aphids) or at least reproductive maturation (when fed on eggs) during 40 days after emergence was close to 100%, independently of the photoperiodic conditions. Obviously, instead of a rapid micro‐evolutionary adaptation of the critical day length to a new climate, the invasive populations of the harlequin ladybird decrease their dependence on photoperiod and thus the weak photoperiodic response of SE Asian population of H. axyridis can be considered as a pre‐adaptation further developed during the invasion.  相似文献

The current study examines the effect of photoperiod (16:08 or 12:12 h L:D) and diet (eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) or the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)) on the development and reproduction of the multicoloured Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). A long-term laboratory population of H. axyridis (since 1998) and a melanic and non-melanic population originating from field collected individuals of H. axyridis in Belgium were used in this study. Long day conditions (16 h photoperiod) shortened development of the field populations with 2–3 days when compared with short day conditions (12 h photoperiod). Oviposition in the field populations was delayed by 1–3 months when reared at a 12 h photoperiod. Dissections indicated that the females were in reproductive diapause. As compared with live pea aphids, a diet consisting of E. kuehniella eggs yielded heavier adult body weights (up to 12%) and increased the number of egg laying days (by 45–169%) for both field populations at a 16 h photoperiod and lengthened adult life span (by 45–92%) under both light regimens. The morph types differed in their response to the foods offered in terms of developmental rate, pre-oviposition period and number of oviposition days. The laboratory and field strains responded differentially to regimens of food and photoperiod. The study indicated a greater nutritional plasticity of the non-melanic morphs which may offer them a competitive advantage that may in part explain the predominance of non-melanic morphs in newly colonized areas.  相似文献

Stage specific functional response of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) to varying densities of Aphis gossypii Glover was examined in a simplified cucumber leaf arena under laboratory conditions. All stages of H. axyridis were isolated individually for 24 h with different prey densities at 25 °C and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. The number of prey consumed by the predator was checked at 3, 6, 12, and 24 h. All stages of H. axyridis showed a Type II functional response. Based on the random predator equation, estimated attack rates of H. axyridis at 24 h were 0.0037, 0.0442, 0.3590, 0.3228, and 0.1456, and estimated handling times were 4.1001, 2.4575, 0.7500, 0.2132, and 0.1708 h for the first, second, third, and fourth instars, and female adult, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract:  The influence of three photoperiods, viz. short day [8 : 16 h; light : dark (L : D)], long day (16 : 8 h; L : D) and continuous light (24 : 0 h; L : D) and four wavelengths of light, viz. white (control), yellow, blue and red on pre-imaginal development and reproductive performance of a ladybird, Coelophora (= Lemnia ) saucia (Mulsant) (Col., Coccinellidae) have been investigated under laboratory conditions. Long-day photoperiod and white light resulted in low immature stage mortality. Total larval period was longest under short-day and red-light conditions. Females kept at long-day photoperiod and under white light showed better reproductive performance than those placed under other photoperiods and wavelengths.  相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) has been commonly reported between predators and parasitoids used as biological control agents as predators consuming parasitoids within their hosts. However, the effect of parasitoid–mummy consumption on the fitness of the predator and subsequent oviposition site selection have not been well studied. In our study, we conducted two laboratory experiments to examine the influence of Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) mummies as prey on fitness and subsequently oviposition site selection of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Results indicate that when H. axyridis was reared on A. gifuensis mummies only, its larval development was prolonged, and body weight of the 4th instar larvae and newly emerged adults, and fecundity decreased. Moreover, H. axyridis did not exhibit oviposition preference on plants infested with unparasitized aphids or aphids parasitized for shorter than 9 days. However, compared with plants with mummies (parasitized ≥9 days), H. axyridis laid more eggs on plants with unparasitized aphids. In contrast, H. axyridis previously fed with A. gifuensis mummies did not show a significant oviposition preference between plants with unparasitized aphids and those with mummies (parasitized ≥9 days). Overall, our results suggest that mummy consumption reduced the fitness of H. axyridis. Although H. axyridis avoided laying eggs on plants with A. gifuensis mummies, prior feeding experience on A. gifuensis mummies could alter the oviposition site preference. Thus, in biological control practice, prior feeding experience of H. axyridis should be carefully considered for reduction of IGP and increase of fitness of H. axyridis on A. gifuensis.  相似文献

Chlorops oryzae is bivoltine in northern Japan but trivoltine in the southern part of the country. In the bivoltine strain, both the egg and larval stages were found to be sensitive to photoperiod. When the egg stage was exposed to a long-day photoperiod (16L:8D), larval development showed a short-day type response, and mature third-instar larvae entered a summer diapause under a long-day photoperiod (15L:9D). When eggs experienced short days, the first-instar larvae entered a winter diapause under short-day conditions, and the critical photoperiod in the larval stage ranged from about 14L:10D to about 12L:12D as the photoperiod experienced by the eggs increased from 12L:12D to 14L:10D. However, the development of the larvae after overwintering was not influenced by the photoperiod. In the trivoltine strain, larval development was retarded under a 14L:10D photoperiod but not under either shorter or longer photoperiods, when larvae had spent the egg stage under a 16L:8D photoperiod. The critical photoperiod of the larval stage for the induction of a winter diapause in the first instar was about 12L:12D, though it varied to some extent with the photoperiod during the egg stage. Thus, Chlorops oryzae was able to adapt itself to the local climatic conditions by the development of variable and complicated photoperiodic responses.  相似文献

Abstract To understand the adaptive strategies of the overwintering adults of Stenocatantops splendens, the mechanism of maintenance and termination of the reproductive diapause, the variation in mortality between overwintering females and males, and the mating strategy of the males were investigated. The results indicated that the adult reproductive diapause in natural conditions was mainly regulated by photoperiod in the fall – long photoperiods promoted reproductive development and short photoperiods maintained reproductive diapause, and the sensitivity of the overwintering adults to photoperiod was over before the end of the winter. When transferred from natural conditions to controlled laboratory conditions on dates from September through February, pre‐oviposition became increasingly shorter with increasingly deferred transfer dates regardless of photoperiod conditions. The adults treated with low temperature for 30 days in September through November had significantly shorter pre‐oviposition, suggesting that low temperatures in winter had an important role in the termination of reproductive diapause. The female had a significantly lower supercooling point than the male, which was related to their lower mortality after winter. In addition, observations of wild populations of the species indicated that mating behavior prior to winter and the duration of pre‐mating period were not affected by photoperiod; mating and sperm transfer were mostly completed by November. Compared with females only mating before winter, females mating in the spring had shorter life span, longer pre‐oviposition, lower hatching rate and laid fewer egg pods while showing no significant difference with regard to ovipositional interval, per pod number of eggs and nymph dry weight.  相似文献

Diapause in fully grown larvae of Ephestia elutella and Plodia inferpunctella was induced by low temperature and short photoperiods. Light intensities below 1 lx affected the induction of diapause in both species. At 20 and 25d?C, the critical photo-period for E.elutella was c. 14 h, and for P.interpunctella c. 13 h. The sensitive phase in both species occurred at about the time of the fourth larval moult. In E.elutella about seven short photoperiods were required for larvae to enter diapause. In P.interpunctella high population density during larval development increased the proportion of larvae entering diapause. The conditions inducing diapause in laboratory stocks, and in stocks collected from the field, were different. Laboratory stocks of both species did not enter diapause at 25d?C and required short photoperiods for diapause at 20d?C. Some larvae of the field stock of E.elutella entered diapause in constant darkness at 30d?C, the number being increased at low R.H., and almost all did in short photoperiods at 25°C. At 20T, most larvae of this stock entered diapause regardless of photoperiod, and at 15°C all did. In P.interpunctella up to one-third of larvae of the field stock entered diapause in short photoperiods at 25d?C, and all did if transferred to short photoperiods at 20d?C. In unheated premises, falling temperatures normally induce diapause in E.elutella each autumn, photoperiod only being important if temperatures are high. In P.interpunctella, photoperiod is a more important factor because it can override the effect of falling temperature to a greater extent than in E.elutella. In both species, however, different field populations may respond in different ways.  相似文献

Predation upon lady beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) eggs in the field is most often instances of egg cannibalism by larvae or adults while the majority of the remaining predation events upon coccinellid eggs is done by other species of Coccinellidae. Thus the recent introduction and establishment of Harmonia axyridis in the US could negatively affect native species of Coccinellidae via egg predation. However, little is known regarding the suitability of interspecific coccinellid eggs as a food source for larval development. In this study, it was found that native first or third instar Coleomegilla maculata and Olla v-nigrum larvae were incapable of surviving to the adult stage when provided solely exotic H. axyridis eggs. In stark contrast, H. axyridis larvae survived equally well when cannibalizing eggs or eating eggs of either native species. When C. maculata and O. v-nigrum were grouped as ‘native’ and compared with the exotic H. axyridis, more native eggs were attacked than exotic eggs and a higher percentage of eggs was attacked by H. axyridis larvae. Native and exotic larvae attacked a similar percentage of native eggs but native larvae attacked significantly fewer exotic eggs than did exotic larvae. These data suggest that H. axyridis may prey upon the eggs of these native species, when encountered in the field, compared with the likelihood of the native species preying upon H. axyridis eggs. Therefore, eggs of the native species C. maculata and O. v-nigrum will continue to be subjected to cannibalism and also to possible predation by other native species and the exotic H. axyridis.  相似文献

A photoperiod of 8L/16D for two weeks was used to distinguish between diapausing and non-diapausingTyphlodromus pyri Scheuten. A diet ofPanonychus ulmi orTetranychus urticae, or pollen ofVicia faba did not influence preovipositional periods of diapausing mites. In mid-September, 88% ofT. pyri collected from an insectary were in diapause. The critical day-length appeared to be between 12.5 and 13.5 h. Diapause duration was greatest in mites collected in September–November, becoming progressively less in mites collected later in the winter. By mid-April, ca. 50% of mites collected from the orchard and insectary oviposited promptly when cultured in the laboratory.Typhlodromus pyri eggs and larvae were present on leaves in early May. At this time, only 4% ofP. ulmi winter eggs had hatched. Diapause terminated most quickly inT. pyri kept in an 18L/6D photoperiod, followed by 24L/0D and 0L/24D. Longest preoviposition periods were recorded for mites kept in 8L/16D photoperiods.  相似文献

Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a vector for the citrus Huanglongbing greening disease, which can reduce crop yields. Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is known to prey on D. citri nymphs; we investigated the predation capacity and functional response of H. axyridis on adult D. citri. H. axyridis larvae exhibited Holling’s type II functional response to different densities of adult D. citri. For second, third and fourth instar H. axyridis larvae, the successful attack rates were 0.75?±?0.22, 1.06?±?0.11, and 1.04?±?0.26, respectively; the handling times were 18.08?±?5.37, 0.45?±?0.07, and 0.24?±?0.07?h, respectively; and the estimated maximum predation rates were 4, 54, and 102, respectively. Fourth instar larvae had the lowest handling time. Adult H. axyridis consumed more D. citri adults maintained at 15–20°C than at 30–35°C, with an optimal temperature of 17.28°C. More adults were consumed during the day than at night, with peak consumption between 12:00 and 14:00?h, not differing significantly differ between predator genders. Adult H. axyridis reared on the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum were tested for D. citri predation; these H. axyridis had successful attack rates, handling times, and estimated maximal predation rates of 0.66?±?0.18, 0.82?±?0.26?h, and 29, respectively. Conversely, those fed and tested on D. citri had corresponding rates of 0.99?±?0.17, 0.38?±?0.12?h, and 63, respectively. Significant H. axyridis predation on adult D. citri indicated its enhanced role in suppressing both nymph and adult D. citri.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the effect of photoperiod on growth and gonadal development of juvenile topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva. Seven different photoperiods (light:dark, L:D) were tested: 0L:24D, 4L:20D, 8L:16D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, 20L:4D and 24L:0D, from November to January. Throughout the study, light intensity was kept at 400 lx on the water surface, and the fish were fed a commercial diet twice a day. Weight gain, feed intake, specific growth rate, and feed conversion efficiency were significantly higher under the constant–long day photoperiods (24L:0D, 20L:4D and 16L:8D) than those under the short–no day photoperiods (12L:12D, 8L:16D, 4L:20D, 0L:24D) (p?<?0.05). The highest mean female gonadosomatic index (GSI) and mean oocyte size were observed under 24L:0D followed by 20L:4D and 16L:8D photoperiods, and these parameters were significantly higher than those of fish cultured under the short–no day photoperiod regimes (p?<?0.05). Proportion of females with GSI?>?9 % were 50.00 %, 46.67 %, 48.48 %, in 24L:0D, 20L:4D and 16L:8D, respectively. These results demonstrate that the growth of juvenile P. parva can be stimulated significantly by constant–long photoperiods and that these photoperiods can advance sexual maturity of females by approximately 2 months.  相似文献

Time required for avian embryos to develop is influenced by incubation temperature and the amount of time adults incubate eggs. Experiments on poultry indicate that photoacceleration, the light‐induced stimulation of embryonic development, decreases the length of the incubation period as embryos receive more light. We hypothesized that eggs of wild birds exposed to longer periods of light should also have shorter incubation periods. We tested whether photoacceleration would occur in a species of open‐cup nesting passerine, the blackcap Sylvia atricapilla. We artificially incubated blackcap eggs under four different photoperiods, four hours of light (4L) and 20 h of dark (20D), 12L:12D, 20L:4D, and a skeleton photoperiod (1 h light, 2 times per day) that framed a 20 h day. While incubation periods were accelerated with increasing photoperiod length, the differences among photoperiods of 4, 12 and 20L were weak. Embryos exposed to skeleton photoperiods developed as fast as those exposed to 20L and significantly faster than those exposed to 4L and 12L treatments. Skeleton photoperiods may most closely approximate natural patterns of light exposure that embryos experience during dawn and dusk incubation recesses typically associated with adult foraging. If our results from this species also occur in other wild birds, exposure to different day lengths may help explain some of the variation in the observed seasonal and latitudinal trends in avian incubation period.  相似文献

Abstract .The response of overwintering nymphs of Strophingia ericae (Curtis) (Homoptera: Psylloidea) to long and short photoperiods over a range of temperatures was investigated to determine the interaction between these factors and winter development as a regulatory mechanism of their life cycle. Strophingia ericae was successfully reared from egg to adult in a long photoperiod (LD 18:6 h) at 10, 15 and 20°C on its host plant Calluna vulgaris. Although development time was longer at 10 than at 15 or 20°C (≈ 263 days compared with ≈ 155 and ≈ 159 days, respectively), there was no interruption in development at any of these temperatures, indicating that there was no obligatory diapause. However, short photoperiod (LD 12:12 h) inhibited development of overwintering fifth instars collected from the field in early winter. Those collected in September and kept at 15°C developed to adult in ≈ 120 days in a short photoperiod (LD 12:12 h) compared with ≈ 40 days in a long photoperiod (LD 18:6 h). Inhibition became weaker in December and disappeared by January, when fifth instars developed to adult at the same rate in both long and short photoperiods (≈ 30 days). A similar photoperiodic response was observed when the experiment was repeated at 10°C, although development times were consistently longer. The observation that insects collected from the field in early winter were able to resume development immediately on transfer to favourable conditions (15°C and LD 18:6 h photocycle) suggests that there is a photoperiodically induced quiescence (rather than a true diapause) in overwintering S. ericae, which becomes progressively reduced as winter proceeds. It was concluded that the life cycle of the upland and possibly the lowland form of S. ericae is regulated by a winter-active photoperiodic inhibition of development, which effectively synchronizes the emergence of the adult stage with higher spring temperatures and renewed host plant growth.  相似文献

It is known that the light day length and diet could act as cue factors inducing adult (reproductive) diapause in aphidophagous coccinellids. However, the rate of coccinellid larval development could also depend on photoperiod and diet. The present study examines the effects of photoperiod (L: D = 12: 12 or 16: 8) and diet (the green peach aphid Myzus persicae or eggs of the Angoumois grain moth Sitotroga cerealella) on preimaginal development of the multicolored Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis. At 20°C, a short light day and feeding on aphids shortened larval development by 1.4 and 4.6 days, respectively. In combination, both factors caused a simple sum of separate impacts indicating the absence of their interaction. The duration of the pupal stage was independent of photoperiod, but decreased by 0.3 days in individuals fed on aphids. The proportion of the larvae that successfully completed preimaginal development was also independent of the light day length, but significantly depended on diet (84 and 60% in individuals fed on green peach aphids and on grain moth eggs, respectively). In sum, these results suggest that in the case studied, diet does not play the role of cue factor, but directly influences the larval growth and development of H. axyridis.  相似文献

The effect of four different light regimes on growth was studied in lenok, Brachymystax lenok. Fish with average weights of 5.5 g were subjected to four different photoperiods (0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D and 24L:0D) for 35 days. The specific growth rate (SGR) of lenok in 24‐h darkness had a significantly higher SGR than those in the continuous light regime (P < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference among fish exposed to 6L:18D, 12L:12D and 24L:0D photoperiods. There was a tendency for higher food intake over the light period extension from 0L to 24L, and feed intake was significantly higher in the continuous light group than in 24‐h darkness (P < 0.05). No significant difference in feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was observed between fish exposed to 0L:24D and 6L:18D photoperiods, however, the FCE in both photoperiods was significantly higher than that in the other two groups. The final survival rate of juveniles varied from 79.67 to 95.33%, with significant differences among experimental groups. Fish tested in continuous illumination spent much more energy on respiration and excretion while depositing less energy for growth than in the other photoperiods. In contrast, fish in 24‐h darkness deposited more energy for growth and spent less energy on respiration and excretion. Results show that photoperiod manipulation can affect growth, and that a continuous dark regime could improve growth in lenok at this stage of development.  相似文献

Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) is an important natural enemy of crop pests. Feeding H. axyridis through artificial diets (ADs) is an important means to achieve large-scale production. In this study, the effects of different diets on the growth, development and reproduction of H. axyridis were comprehensively evaluated, and the reasons for the reduced reproductive capacity of H. axyridis fed ADs were preliminarily explored. Artificial diets were prepared using pig liver and pork as the main ingredients. Larval duration, larval survival rate, egg production and other traits were comprehensively evaluated. Harmonia axyridis fed ADs during both the larval and adult periods completed growth and development from larva to adult but had a prolonged development duration (6.13-day extension) and reduced survival rate (15.3% reduction) in the larval stage. In addition, adults could not lay eggs. Next, individuals of H. axyridis were fed Megoura japonica (Matsumura) in the larval stage and an AD, adequate aphids (AA) or an artificial diet plus 5 (AD5), 10 (AD10) or 25 (AD25) aphids in the adult stage. The adults in the AD group produced a small number of eggs (103.3 eggs). When aphids were added to the diet, egg production gradually increased with the number of aphids added. The AD25 group exhibited no significant difference in egg production compared with that in the AA group (983.8 eggs and 1,158.3 eggs, respectively). Anatomical observations of the H. axyridis adults in these five groups revealed that ovary development was slowest in the AD group. In addition, we found that the levels of vitellogenin and juvenile hormone were significantly lower in the AD group than in the AA group. These results provide a foundation for formulating ADs for H. axyridis and improving the large-scale reproduction of this species.

Regulation of growth and development by photoperiod was studied in a population of the speckled wood butterfly, Purarge aegeria L. (Lepidoptera: Satyrinae), from southern Sweden. Individuals were reared in a range of photoperiodic regimes (9L. to 22L) and temperatures (13°C to 21° C). Plasticity was found for important life-history traits- generation time, growth rate and final weight and seasonal regulation of development in response to photoperiod was found to occur at two levels. Purarge aegeria hibernates as a third instar larva or in the pupal stage, cantering one of four major developmental pathways in response to photoperiod: (1) direct development in both the larval and pupal stages, (2) pupal winter diapause with or (3) without a preceding larval summer diapause, or (4) larval winter diapause. In addition to this high-level regulation of individual development, larval growth rate and pupal development rate also appear to be finally regulated by photoperiod within each major pathway. As photoperiods decreased from 22 h to 17 h at 17° C, growth rate among directly developing larvae increased progressively, as was the case for larva? developing according to a univoltine life cycle from 17 h to 14 h. At two photoperiods, 13 h and 16 h (corresponding to shifts between major pathways), both larval and pupal development were extremely variable with the fastest individuals developing directly and the slowest developing with a diapause. This indicates a gradual nature of diapause itself, suggesting that the two level may not he fundamentally different.  相似文献

Aphidophagous ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) are attracted to and feed heavily on aphids, but many species will also feed opportunistically on other prey that they encounter. In potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in Washington State, USA, coccinellids feed on both green peach aphids (“GPA,” Myzus persicae Sulzer) and eggs of the Colorado potato beetle (“CPB,” Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say). The guild of aphidophagous ladybirds includes two native species, Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Coccinella transversoguttata Brown. Recently, an introduced species, Coccinella septempunctata L., has invaded and apparently displaced its native congener. A second exotic, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, has colonized the area and is becoming more abundant. We compared larval development of each species on a monotypic diet of GPA, a monotypic diet of CPB eggs, or a mixed diet of both GPA and CPB eggs. Our goal was to answer two questions: (1) do larvae of the four ladybird species benefit from including CPB eggs in their diet and (2) do the four ladybird species differ in their ability to utilize CPB eggs as prey? No larva of any species completed development on a pure diet of CPB eggs, and survivorship was highest for all species when they fed on a pure diet of GPA. One native species, H. convergens, and one exotic species, H. axyridis, exhibited significantly lower survivorship on a mixed diet of both CPB eggs and GPA, compared to a pure GPA diet; H. axyridis also took longer to develop from egg to adult when both prey were provided. Survivorship of the two Coccinella spp. was not altered by the inclusion of CPB eggs with GPA, although CPB eggs lengthened the development time of C. transversoguttata. Adult size was not consistently affected by diet for any of the coccinellids. Overall, no ladybird species benefited from the inclusion of potato beetle eggs in its diet. The two Coccinella species responded similarly to the inclusion of CPB eggs, and so we would not expect any difference in the success of coccinellid larval development in potato fields following the replacement of C. transversoguttata by C. septempunctata. Hippodamia convergens and H. axyridis, the two species whose survivorship was depressed by combining CPB egg and aphid prey, were also the two species that consumed the greatest number of CPB eggs during successful larval development. A comparison of total egg consumption by each species cohort suggested that displacement of the other species by H. axyridis would not alter CPB biological control, because the higher per capita feeding rate by H. axyridis larvae compensated for individuals’ greater mortality risk on a diet including CPB eggs.  相似文献
