Genetic variation within, and divergence among, populations of the liverwortConocephalum conicum were estimated from the study of 17 populations and 23 putative gene loci. Two additional multilocus genotypes (“T” and “FS”) were detected in Japan, along with the previously reported “J” type. These three multilocus genotypes differed both morphologically and ecologically. All eight populations from western Japan included only the J-type and exhibited low genetic variation within populations: Nei's (1973) average gene diversity (Ĥ)=0.080±0.029. In contrast, co-occurrence of several multilocus genotypes in each population from the Kanto District resulted in much higher levels of genetic variation (Ĥ=0.218±0.037). If the three genotypes are distinguished,Ĥ values are 0.113±0.030 for T-type, 0.107±0.033 for FS-type, and 0.083±0.018 for J-type. UsingC. japonicum, which showed low genetic variation (0.014±0.010) as an outgroup, each genotype formed a monophyletic clade, and the J- and FS-types were more closely related to each other than to the T-type. Populations of western Japan and the Kanto District also differed in the degree of gene diversity among populations, but the reasons for these differences are obscure.  相似文献

The electrophoretic patterns of 15 protein systems codified for 20 genetic loci were investigated using horizontal electrophoresis. A total of 150 blood samples, from five species of the genusCallithrix were analyzed. Polymorphic variation was observed in 10 out 20 loci analyzed. The genotypic distributions are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The average heterozygosity (H) varied from 1% to 5%, similar to those observed for other Neotropical primates. The genetic distance coefficients revealed a phylogenetic separation of these species into two groups: (1) “argentata” (C. humeralifer andC. emiliae); (2) “jacchus” (C. jacchus, C. penicillata, andC. geoffroyi). This arrangement is according to the taxonomic arrangement proposed byHershkovitz (1977),de Vivo (1988), andMittermeier et al. (1988). The results in each group are compatible with the subspecies values recorded for the Platyrrhini. These values showed that:C. humeralifer andC. emiliae are subspecies ofC. argentata;C. jacchus, C. penicillata, andC. geoffroyi are subspecies ofC. jacchus. These results also suggest thatC. j. geoffroyi is the “jacchus” group taxon, most similar genetically to the “argentata” group.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation may influence the genetic make-up and adaptability of endangered populations. To facilitate genetic monitoring of the endangered European ground squirrel (EGS), we analyzed 382 individuals from 16 populations in Central Europe, covering almost half of its natural range. We tested how fragmentation affects the genetic architecture of presumably selectively neutral (12 microsatellites) and non-neutral (the major histocompatibility class II DRB gene) loci. Spatial genetic analyses defined two groups of populations, “western” and “eastern”, with a significantly higher level of habitat fragmentation in the former group. The highly fragmented western populations had significantly lower genetic diversity in both types of markers. Only one allele of the DRB gene predominated in populations of the western group, while four alleles were evenly distributed across the eastern populations. Coefficient of inbreeding values (F IS) calculated from microsatellites were significantly higher in the western (0.27–0.79) than in eastern populations (−0.060–0.119). Inter-population differentiation was very high, but similar in both groups (western F ST = 0.23, eastern F ST = 0.25). The test of isolation by distance was significant for the whole dataset, as well as for the two groups analyzed separately. Comparison of genetic variability and structure on microsatellites and the DRB gene does not provide any evidence for contemporary selection on MHC genes. We suggest that genetic drift in small bottlenecked and fragmented populations may overact the role of balancing selection. Based on the resulting risk of inbreeding depression in the western populations, we support population management by crossbreeding between the western and eastern populations.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Rastbestände des Kormorans auf Helgoland sind seit den 1970er Jahren stark angestiegen. Die Summe der Pentadenmaxima nahm von 1984 bis 1989 um jährlich 47 % zu. Obwohl sich die Beobachtungsintensität für Rastbestände seit 1991 stark verringerte, stieg die Maximalzahl bis 1996 auf 661 Kormorane. Bis Ende der siebziger Jahre wurden die Maxima in den Zugzeiten erreicht, seit etwa 1980 wird Helgoland dagegen zunehmend als Winterrastplatz genutzt. Die Rastbestände stiegen vor allem im September/Oktober an, erreichten Maxima von Dezember bis März und sanken von Ende März bis Mai. Der Winterbestand baute sich von 1979 bis 1996 im Herbst zunehmend schneller auf (um mehr als 100 Tage) und nahm im Frühjahr zeitiger ab (um 43 Tage). Ziehende Kormorane wurden hingegen vor allem im März/April (Median: 12. April) und von Ende Juli bis Oktober (Median: 16. September) beobachtet. Im Frühjahr ziehen Kormorane überwiegend in ost-/nordöstliche, im Herbst in west/südwestliche Richtung. 67 % flogen in Trupps mit 11–40 Individuen (Median: 27). Zugbeobachtungen fielen mit 69 % der Individuen in die Zeit bis 12 Uhr (Median: 10:05 Uhr). Von 6 Ringfunden stammen je 1 aus den Niederlanden und Norwegen sowie 4 aus Dänemark. Von 36 Totfunden auf Helgoland seit 1984 gehörten 19 nach Maßen sicher zur UnterartPhalacrocorax c. carbo, nur 9 zuP. c. sinensis. Das Gros der auf Helgoland überwinternden Kormorane stellt demnach vermutlichP. c. carbo. Vögel dieser Subspezies überwintern zudem weniger weit im Süden alssinensis und bevorzugen marine Habitate und felsige Küsten. Ein Wintermaximum vonP. c. sinensis ist daher zwar für Überwinterungsgebiete in Mittel- und Südeuropa bekannt, nicht aber aus dem Bereich der übrigen Nordsee und dem Wattenmeer. Die Brutbestände vonsinensis haben in Dänemark und Südschweden seit 1980/81 stark zugenommen, weniger diejenigen voncarbo in Norwegen. Parallel zur Zunahme der Winterbestände vonsinensis im Skagerrak und Kattegat, einem bisher typischen Überwinterungsraum voncarbo, kam es 1983–1985 zu mindestens 9 Ringfunden norwegischer Vögel in Mittel- und Südeuropa sowie 1976–1989 zu 6 Ringfunden in Nordost-Deutschland. Möglicherweise trug eine zunehmende Konkurrenz im Skagerrak und Kattegat zu dem Aufbau und der starken Zunahme der Winterbestände auf Helgoland bei. Parallelen einer Konkurrenz zwischencarbo undsinensis sind in Westfrankreich zu finden.
Numbers, migration and origin of CormorantsPhalacrocorax carbo at a wintering site on the island of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea)
The numbers of Cormorants resting on the island of Helgoland (54° 11 N, 7° 53 E) have increased considerably since the 1970s. Annual totals of the maxima per five-day period rose by 47 % per year from 1984 to 1989. Although the observation effort decreased, annual maxima further increased to 661 birds in 1996 (Fig. 1). Up to the late seventies, annual maxima of resting birds were occurred during the migration periods, whereas since about 1980 Helgoland is increasingly used as a wintering site. Resting numbers grew mainly in September/October, reached their maxima from December to March and fell again from the end of March to May (Fig. 2). Today arrival takes place more than 100 days earlier and departure 43 days earlier than in 1979 (Fig. 3). Migrating Cormorants were mainly observed in March and April (median: 12. April) and from the end of July to October (median: 16. September, Fig. 4). They prefer eastern and north-eastern directions in spring, and western and southwestern directions in autumn (Fig. 5). 67 % of the individuals were observed to migrate in flocks of 11 to 40 individuals (median 27, Fig. 6), and 69 % of migrating individuals were counted before midday (median: 10:05 hours, Fig. 7). Six ringed birds were found or observed at Helgoland. They were ringed in The Netherlands (1), Denmark (4) and Norway (1). According to their body measurements, 19 out of a total of 36 Cormorants found dead at Helgoland are assumed to belong to the subspeciescarbo, whereas only 9 are presumablyP. c. sinensis. Hence, we believe that most birds wintering at Helgoland belong toP. c. carbo. This subspecies winters less far south thansinensis and prefers marine habitats and rocky shores. Winter maxima ofsinensis are only known from wintering sites further south but not from the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, where maxima occur during spring and autumn migration. Breeding numbers ofP. c. sinensis have increased considerably in Denmark and south Sweden since 1980/81, whereas thoseP. c. carbo numbers have increased at a lesser rate. Coinciding with the increase of winteringsinensis in the Skagerrak and Kattegat area (a formerly typical wintering site ofcarbo), there were at least 9 recoveries of birds ringed in Norway in central and south Europe from 1983–85 and 6 in northeastern Germany from 1976–89. Probably, the establishment and growth of the winter population at Helgoland is a result of increasing competition in the Skagerrak and Kattegat. Similar developments betweencarbo andsinensis have been observed in northwest France.

Nautilus species are the only remaining cephalopods with an external shell. Targeted heavily by the shell trade across their distribution area, these species have a poorly known population structure and genetics. Molecular techniques have been used to assess levels of inter- and intra-population genetic diversity in isolated populations of Nautilus in the northern sections of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia and in the Coral Sea. Distinct populations, physically separated by depths in excess of 1,000 m were examined. RAPD analysis of genetic differences showed limited differentiation of the “Northern GBR” populations and the “Coral Sea” populations. Discrimination between the two geographic groups was observed from these data. In addition, partial sequencing of the CoxI gene region, yielded 575 bp of sequence, which was aligned for 43 samples and phylogenetic trees constructed to examine genetic relationships. Two distinct clades were resolved in the resulting trees, representing the “Northern GBR” and “Coral Sea” population groups. Inter- and intra-population relationships are presented and discussed. The differentiation of the Nautilus populations from the Northern section of the Great Barrier Reef and those from the Coral Sea were supported by two distinctly different methodologies and the significance of this separation and the potential evolutionary divergence of these two population groups is discussed.  相似文献

Distinguishing natural versus anthropogenic dispersal of organisms is essential for determining the native range of a species and implementing an effective conservation strategy. For cryptogenic species with limited historical records, molecular data can help to identify introductions. Nematostella vectensis is a small, burrowing estuarine sea anemone found in tidally restricted salt marsh pools. This species’ current distribution extends over three coast lines: (i) the Atlantic coast of North America from Nova Scotia to Georgia, (ii) the Pacific coast of North America from Washington to central California, and (iii) the southeast coast of England. The 1996 IUCN Red List designates N. vectensis as “vulnerable” in England. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting of 516 individuals from 24 N. vectensis populations throughout its range and mtDNA sequencing of a subsample of these individuals strongly suggest that anthropogenic dispersal has played a significant role in its current distribution. Certain western Atlantic populations of N. vectensis exhibit greater genetic similarity to Pacific populations or English populations than to other western Atlantic populations. At the same time, F-statistics showing high degrees of genetic differentiation between geographically proximate populations support a low likelihood for natural dispersal between salt marshes. Furthermore, the western Atlantic harbors greater genetic diversity than either England or the eastern Pacific. Collectively, these data clearly imply that N. vectensis is native to the Atlantic coast of North America and that populations along the Pacific coast and in England are cases of successful introduction.  相似文献

Den sharing by conspecific spiny lobsters (aggregation) is modulated by chemical attraction but may confer several, not necessarily mutually exclusive, antipredator byproduct benefits: a “guide effect”, which only benefits the individual attracted to a sheltered conspecific; a “dilution effect”, which reduces per-capita risk of predation simply through aggregation; or active “group defense”. Each potential benefit has a different set of predictors (relationships between aggregation and conspecific or predator densities), but conflicting results could suggest the simultaneous operation of more than one benefit. These predictions were tested for coexisting Panulirus guttatus (a reef-obligate) and Panulirus argus (a temporary reef-dweller) using data collected during 11 surveys on fixed sites over a coral reef in Mexico. P. guttatus greatly outnumbered P. argus, but P. argus showed a greater tendency to aggregate. All three benefits of den sharing operated for the more social P. argus, with “group defense” being of the most benefit for larger individuals, and the “guide” and “dilution” effects for smaller individuals recently immigrating into the reef habitat and sharing dens with larger conspecifics. P. guttatus did not display “group defense” and its aggregations appeared to be modulated by the interplay between attraction and aggressive behaviors. This species relied more on solitary crypticity, especially at larger sizes, but appeared to benefit from a “guide effect” at high conspecific densities. In experimental tanks, each species tended to aggregate when tested separately, but when tested jointly, aggregation among P. guttatus was significantly reduced. The experimental results reflect the differential patterns of aggregation between the fore-reef, where P. guttatus dominated, and the back-reef, where coexistence of both species was greater.  相似文献

Tea plant [Camellia sinensis (L.) O.Kuntze)] is one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverage crops in the world today. In recent years, many clonal tea cultivars have been developed and widely planted to replace the diverse traditional tea populations. In this article, we study the relationships between classifications based on simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and on morphological traits for 185 tea plant cultivars. Results show that the genetic diversity index (H) is between 0.229 and 0.803, and the mean value is 0.543; the observed heterozygosity (H o) ranges from 0.103 to 0.683, with an average of 0.340, while the genetic identity varies from 0.267 to 0.984. Based on tea-making properties, the genetic diversity in the “black-green tea” group is much higher than in the “Oolong tea” group. Based on morphological traits, cluster analysis classifies the 185 cultivars into three groups, “group I,” “group II” and “group III.” Most cultivars are related based on the geographical origin and their genetic backgrounds.  相似文献

The AFLP method was used to study the inter-population variability of eight populations of Elymus caninus (L.) L. as well as three populations of Hordelymus europaeus (L.) Jess. ex Harz. In these studies a clear distinction was found between two phenotypes of E. caninus collected in the same locality. It also appeared that two populations of E. caninus representing the “pauciflorum” morphotype were clustered together, similarly as two populations of E. caninus exhibiting morphotype “caninus”. Additionally, the populations of the “pauciflorum” type were clustered together with all samples of H. europaeus. Furthermore, the same approach was applied to analyze the intra-population variability of E. caninus. The populations ranged from nearly uniform to as diverse as the samples collected from different localities. In some populations of this species the presence of off-type plants was revealed. Our data indicate the predominantly self-pollinating character of E. caninus and the possible genetic relationship between of E. caninus and H. europaeus. The Baja California killifish, Fundulus lima, is found in six desert oases of the southern Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. The recent introduction of exotic fishes, particularly redbelly tilapia, have impacted the ecology of Fundulus lima such that it is now endangered. Plans of relocating F. lima to bodies of freshwater that are free of exotics have been proposed, however little is know about the genetic identity of the current populations. In this study, we examined the mitochondrial control region of F. lima samples from 4 oases, and in addition, compared these samples to their sister species, the California killifish F.␣parvipinnis. Using a combination of phylogenetic and coalescent approaches, we were able to determine that the two subspecies of the California killifish, F. p.␣brevis, and F. p. parvipinnis, and F. lima form an unresolved trichotomy that diverged between 200,000 years and 400,000 years ago. The one F. lima individual that we were able to collect in the southernmost oasis grouped with the southern subspecies of the California killifish, F. parvipinnis brevis. In contrast, we found that the 3 northern oases grouped together in a “Fundulus lima” clade. Each oasis is genetically distinct, yet there is no evidence of a␣marked genetic bottleneck in any populations (Haplotype diversity between 0.5 and 0.8). Future relocation plans will therefore need to be done cautiously to preserve the genetic identity of the original populations.  相似文献

One Y-specific DNA polymorphism (p49/Taql) was studied in a sample of 469 African males coming from twelve populations of sub-Saharan Africa. An high frequency (62.5%) of the Y-haplotype IV was observed in these populations, the most elevated percentage of this haplotype being observed in Mossis (from Burkina-Fasso). The “Arabic” haplotype V is present in these populations at a mean frequency of 8.7%. Summary Plastid and mitochondrial DNAs from Hedysarum species of the western Mediterranean basin, H. spinosissimum ssp eu-spinosissimum, H. spinosissimum ssp capitatum, H. carnosum, H. coronarium and H. flexuosum, were compared by restriction endonuclease fragment analysis. ctDNA fragment patterns for ssp eu-spinosissimum and ssp capitatum were indistinguishable in different enzyme digests. An identical ctDNA variation was found in Hpa II digests with two Sardinian populations of ssp capitatum. Each of the two subspecies was characterized by specific mt DNA patterns with Pst I, Bam HI, Sma I and EcoRI. No variation was detected in populations of different geographical origins for a given subspecies. H. carnosum, H. coronarium and H. flexuosum generated specific ct and mt DNA patterns. Comparison of mitochondrial fragments indicated: — a strong homology between the two subspecies, — a closer homology among the three other diploids, each being closer to the other two than to H. spinosissimum subspecies — as was also the case for the plastid genomes.  相似文献

Summary The Highlands County, Florida populations of the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus L., represent a putative subspecies, P. g. australis Maynard. The only foodplant ever reported in southern half of Florida is sweetbay, Magnolia virginiana L. (Magnoliaceae). In fact, there are apparently no other reported foodplants for the polyphagous tiger swallowtail species which exist in southern Florida. These ecologically monophagous P. g. australis populations were studied in order to determine whether or not significant behavioral and biochemical adaptations in the larvae are detectable as a result of the ecological specialization on sweetbay. These results suggest an emphatic yes. On sweetbay, neonate larval survival of these Florida populations is the best of any other population tested from across North America. In addition, penultimate instar larval growth rates are significantly faster on sweet bay than any other foodplant tested. Furthermore, these biochemical adaptations to sweetbay by P. g. australis in Florida are accompanied by a significantly poorer neonate survival and growth performance on northern foodplants (most notably the Salicaceae and Betulaceae). Reciprocal inabilities of the northern subspecies, P. g. canadensis, and the western P. rutulus to utilize sweetbay are described, as well as the reciprocal inabilities of two congeneric and sympatric (Florida) species, Papilio palamedes and Papilio troilus, that have specialized on another bay (redbay, Persea borbonia; of the Lauraceae). It remains uncertain to what degree such apparent negative genetic correlations in foodplant adaptations represent a driving force in the formation of host races or species, especially since so little is known about oviposition preferences of Papilio glaucus across North America. In Florida we have an apparently strict ecological monophagy coupled with a degree of reproductive isolation that has resulted in its tentative classification as a subspecies, P. g. australis. The role of foodplants in the speciation process can be significant even for P. glaucus, the most polyphagous of all 563 species of world Papilionidae. It remains uncertain whether the significant differences in detoxication and biochemical processing abilities observed in this study were evolved in parapatry or allopatry. Disjunct populations of P. alexiares in Mexico retain some ability to detoxify sweetbay, as do some individuals in most P. glaucus glaucus populations tested from ten different states north of Florida.  相似文献

The Western capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is a keystone species of Palearctic boreal and altitude coniferous forests. With the increase of mountain leisure activities and habitat loss, populations are declining in most mountain ranges in Western Europe. Recent work has shown that the populations from the Pyrenees and Cantabrian Mountains survived a severe bottleneck during the 19th century, and are still considered as threatened due to habitat fragmentation and isolation with other populations. We present an extensive phylogeographic study based on mitochondrial DNA sequence (control region) extracted non-invasively from faeces collected throughout the species range (from western European mountains to central and eastern Europe, Fenno-Scandia, Russia and Siberia). We also compared our results with DNA sequences of closely related black-billed capercaillie (T. parvirostris). We found that populations from Pyrenees and Cantabrians are closely related but are different from all other capercaillie populations that form a homogenous clade. Therefore, we consider that these South-Western populations should be considered as forming an Evolutionary Significant Unit that needs an appropriate management at a local scale. We also discuss the possible locations of glacial refugia and subsequent colonisation routes in Eurasia, with a Western “aquitanus” lineage from Iberia and Balkans, and an Eastern “urogallus” lineage from Southern Asia. This work might have important implication for capercaillie conservation strategies to define important areas for conservation, and to prevent possible exchange or introductions of individuals originated from other lineages. Arctic seas have warmed and sea ice has retreated. This has resulted in range contraction and population declines in some species, but it could potentially be a boon for others. Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo have a partially wettable plumage and seem poorly suited to foraging in Arctic waters. We show that rates of population change of Cormorant colonies around Disko Bay, Greenland, are positively correlated with sea surface temperature, suggesting that they may benefit from a warming Arctic. However, although Cormorant populations may increase in response to Arctic warming, the extent of expansion of their winter range may ultimately be limited by other factors, such as sensory constraints on foraging behaviour during long Arctic nights.  相似文献

Field grown foliage from the resistant soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] breeding line GAT “81–327” and the susceptible cultivar “Ransom” was used to rear unparasitized larvae of the soybean looper (SBL),Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), and larvae parasitized byCopidosoma truncatellum (Dalman). SBL larvae, whether parasitized or not, consumed more foliage when fed “Ransom”. Unparasitized larvae reared on “81–327” had longer developmental times and suffered greater mortality than unparasitized larvae reared on “Ransom”. Parasitization of SBL larvae byC. truncatellum increased total foliage consumption of both soybean lines. Parasitized larvae reared on the resistant “81–327” weighed less and yielded fewer parasitoid adults.

Three genera of lagomorphs, Prolagus, Lagopsis, and “Amphilagus,” were identified during a revision of the lagomorph material from Sandelzhausen (MN5, Early/Middle Miocene boundary, southern Germany). Evidence of two morphological and dimensional classes were observed at some tooth positions in Prolagus (some p3 show an unmistakable P. oeningensis morphology, others closely resemble P. crusafonti), but not at other tooth positions (e.g., M1–2). Insufficient data from Sandelzhausen precludes identification of two different species of Prolagus from this locality, and to define the characteristics of the possible P. crusafonti-like species. Thus, all Prolagus specimens have been classified as P. aff. oeningensis. The genus Lagopsis is represented by L. cf. penai, whose presence is compatible with a MN5 age. The relative abundance of Lagopsis to Prolagus may indicate relatively cool and wet palaeoclimatic conditions. The largest primitive lagomorph species from continental Europe is present at Sandelzhausen. Morphological and dimensional comparisons with other European primitive lagomorphs exclude any affinity with the genera Eurolagus and Titanomys and with the species included in “Amphilagus ulmensis”. Some common features with “Amphilagus antiquus” were observed, although they are not sufficient for the attribution to this taxon. Until there is a general revision of European primitive lagomorphs, the Sandelzhausen giant lagomorph is classified as “Amphilagus” sp. Mesozooplankton distribution and composition in the very shallow part of the Siberian Laptev Sea shelf were studied during the German-Russian expeditions “Transdrift I” (August/September 1993) and “Transdrift III” (October 1995). Maximum abundances were found close to the outflow of the Lena River (7,965 ind. m−3) and in the Yana river mouth (38,163 ind. m−3). Lowest abundances occurred in the northeast and west of the Laptev Sea (64–95 ind. m−3). Highest biomass values (104–146 mg DM m−3) were determined in the northern and northeastern part of the shallow Laptev Sea, as well as close to the river outflows, with a record biomass maximum in the Yana river mouth (270 mg DM m−3). Biomass minima were situated north of the Lena Delta and in the western part of the shallow Laptev Sea (0.3–1.0 mg DM m−3). Copepods dominated in terms of abundance and biomass. Cluster analyses separated four mesozooplankton assemblages: the assemblage “Lena/Yana” in the southern part, “Eastern-central” in the centre, “Kotelnyy” in the eastern part and “Taimyr” in the western part of the shallow Laptev Sea. The small-sized neritic and brackish-water copepods Drepanopus bungei, Limnocalanus grimaldii and Pseudocalanus major occurred in enormous numbers and made up the bulk of zooplankton abundance and biomass in the very shallow part of the Laptev Sea close to the rivers Lena and Yana. In the more northern and northeastern areas, Calanus glacialis, P. minutus and P. major were dominant copepod species, whereas Oithona similis and Acartia sp. became important in the western Laptev Sea. Appendicularians, as well as hydromedusae and the chaetognath Sagitta sp., contributed significantly to abundance and biomass, respectively, but not over the entire area studied. One can identify taxon-specific distribution patterns (e.g. Sagitta predominated the biomass in a zone between the area heavily influenced by Lena/Yana and the offshore area to the north), which differ from the patterns revealed by cluster analysis. Hydrographic features, especially the enormous freshwater inflow, apparently determine the occurrence and formation of zooplankton aggregations. Extremely high numbers of small-sized neritic and brackish-water copepods occurred locally, which were probably also supported by excellent feeding conditions.  相似文献

Dipteronia is an endemic genus to China and includes only two species, Dipteronia sinensis and D. dyeriana. Based on random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, a comparative study of the genetic diversity and genetic structure of Dipteronia was performed. In total, 128 and 103 loci were detected in 17 D. sinensis populations and 4 D. dyeriana populations, respectively, using 18 random primers. These results showed that the proportions of polymorphic loci for the two species were 92.97% and 81.55%, respectively, indicating that the genetic diversity of D. sinensis was higher than that of D. dyeriana. Analysis, based on similarity coefficients, Shannon diversity index and Nei gene diversity index, also confirmed this result. AMOVA analysis demonstrated that the genetic variation of D. sinensis within and among populations accounted for 56.89% and 43.11% of the total variation, respectively, and that of D. dyeriana was 57.86% and 42.14%, respectively. The Shannon diversity index and Nei gene diversity index showed similar results. The abovementioned characteristics indicated that the genetic diversity levels of these two species were extremely similar and that the interpopulational genetic differentiation within both species was relatively high. Analysis of the genetic distance among populations also supported this conclusion. Low levels of interpopulational gene flow within both species were believed to be among the leading causes for the above-mentioned phenomenon. The correlation analysis between genetic and geographical distances showed the existence of a remarkably significant correlation between the genetic distance and the longitudinal difference among populations of D. sinensis (p < 0.01), while no significant correlation was found between genetic and geographical distances among populations of D. dyeriana. This indicated that genetic distance was correlated with geographical distances on a large scale rather than on a small scale. This result may be related to differences in the selection pressure on species by their habitats with different distribution ranges. We suggest that in situ conservation efforts should focus on establishing more sites to protect the natural populations and their habitats.
