Foragers use a variety of anti-predator behaviours to increase their safety from predators. While foraging, animals should alter usage within or between sites to balance the benefits of feeding with the costs of predation. I tested how the distribution of food abundance and predation danger interacts to explain spatial usage (i.e. distance from shore) by migratory western sandpipers ( Calidris mauri ) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia, Canada, during northward and southward migrations. At Boundary Bay there are opposing spatial gradients in the distribution of food abundance and safety from predators. Predation danger for sandpipers is high near the shoreline where there is approach cover for falcons and decreases with distance from shore. Food abundance for sandpipers declines as distance from the shoreline increases. Food and danger attributes at Boundary Bay also differ temporally, such that food abundance is higher during southward migration, and predation danger is higher during northward migration. The spatial usage by western sandpipers balances the tradeoff between the opposing spatial gradients in food and safety. For both migratory periods spatial usage of the mudflat by sandpipers is highest at distances from the shoreline where food abundance and predation danger are intermediate. During the northward migration sandpiper usage is highest between 150 and 500 m from the shoreline, and during the southward migration sandpiper usage is highest between 100 and 600 m from the shoreline. Despite temporal differences in food and danger attributes, spatial usage of the site by sandpipers does not differ between migratory periods. Understanding how the distribution of food abundance and predation danger interact to affect the within site usage by shorebirds has important implications for assessments of site quality.  相似文献

We investigated the flexibility of body composition in relation to seasonally variable demands for endurance flight capacity and hyperphagia in a migratory shorebird. Migrating western sandpipers were sampled in spring and fall while refueling at a north temperate stopover and were compared with nonmigrating birds captured at a tropical wintering area in Panama. Sandpipers weighed 25% more at stopover, and nearly 40% of migratory mass increase consisted of lean body components. Most organs and flight muscles were 10%-100% larger during migration, and the greatest relative size increases occurred in the digestive system (including liver). Birds preparing to initiate spring migration from Panama deposited only fat, suggesting that changes in lean body components take place after migration has begun, possibly through training effects. Sex did not influence body composition. Juveniles making their first southward migration were similar to adults in structural size and body mass but had substantially enlarged alimentary tracts. Sandpipers appeared to deposit lean mass during stopover in fall but not in spring. The dramatic enlargement of the digestive system in this small species that makes short flights and fuels frequently contrasts with the reduction of digestive components in larger species that fuel only once or twice by making one or two very long flights to their destination.  相似文献

Summary The hypothesis that intense predation, variable food availability, and increased social interactions in high density populations have been important factors promoting the evolution of polygynous and promiscuous mating systems in certain Calidridine sandpipers (Holmes and Pitelka, 1966) is examined in breeding populations of the Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) in subarctic Alaska.Western Sandpipers breed in a habitat consisting of a complex mosaic of wet low-lying marshes and relatively well-drained, heath-covered tundra. They defend small territories and nest on the latter, while some feeding also occurs there. Most foods however are obtained off territory in the wet marshes and along the shores of lakes, rivers and sloughs.Densities in the nesting areas ranged from 132–196 pairs/40 ha at the base of a low range of hills to 200–300/40 ha on hummocks surrounded completely by marsh. These densities, the highest reported for a Calidridine sandpiper, are relatively constant from year to year.The mating system of the Western Sandpiper is monogamous, both sexes incubate and care for young. Correlated with a strong single pair-bond and stable populations is a strong tendency to return to the same site. Of sandpipers marked, an average of 57.6% of males and 48.8% of females returned in succeeding years, frequently to the same territory or its immediate vicinity. Of the pairs returning to the study area in subsequent years, 61.5% reunited.The restriction of nesting activities to heath tundra is considered to be a result of the protection it provides for nests. With the separation of nesting and feeding areas and with relatively abundant food sources that are not significantly affected by weather, a large nesting area is not required, allowing high densities of Western Sandpipers to occupy the patches of heath-covered tundra. In this ecological context, the high intensity of social interactions has not resulted in the evolution of a nonmonogamous mating system. Indeed, the increased protection afforded offspring by the presence of both parents is probably the most important selective force promoting the evolution of the monogamous mating pattern in Western Sandpipers.  相似文献

Many shorebird species undertake long-distance migrations punctuated by brief stays at food-rich, estuarine stopover locations. Understanding use of these food resources helps guide conservation and responsible development decisions. We determined the extent and degree to which Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) utilized biofilm as a food resource across a large and variable stopover location during northward (spring) migration. We investigated the spatial heterogeneity in diet composition, to determine whether shorebirds were consistently feeding on biofilm or whether diet varied between naturally and anthropogenically delineated sites. We used stable isotope analysis to estimate that biofilm conservatively comprised 22% to 53% of Western Sandpiper droppings across all sampling sites and that prey composition differed significantly between areas within the stopover location. Widespread biofilm consumption demonstrates the importance of biofilm as a dietary component. Variable diet composition suggests that habitat heterogeneity may be an important component of high quality stopover locations in the context of “state-dependant trade-offs” of Western Sandpiper population sub-groups. Future management decisions must consider and address potential impacts on the biofilm community throughout a stopover location, as single site studies of diet composition may not be adequate to develop effective management strategies for entire stopover sites.  相似文献

The ontogenesis and specific activities of pancreatic and intestinal enzymes were investigated in sharpsnout sea bream, Diplodus puntazzo, during larval development until the end of weaning on day 50. The green-water technique was carried out for larval rearing in triplicate. Trypsin was first detected as early as hatching and sharply increased related to age and exogenous feeding until day 25, but a sharp decrease was observed towards the end of the experiment. Amylase was determined 2 days after hatching (DAH) and sharply increased to 10 DAH. Afterwards, slight decreases were found between 10 and 20 DAH and then slow alterations were continued until end of the experiment. Lipase was measured for the first time on day 4, and then slight increase was found to 25 DAH. After this date, slow variations were maintained until end of the experiment. Pepsin was firstly assayed 32 DAH related with stomach formation and sharply increased to 40 DAH. Then it was fluctuated until end of the experiment. Enzymes of brush border membranes, alkaline phosphatase and aminopeptidase N, showed similar pattern on specific activities during the first 10 days. Thereafter, while specific activity of alkaline phosphatase slightly decreased to 15 DAH and fluctuated until 20 DAH, aminopeptidase N activity slowly declined to 20 DAH. Afterwards, activity of alkaline phosphatase and aminopeptidase N were sharply increased to 30 DAH, showing maturation of the intestinal digestive process and also these activities continued to slight increase until end of the experiment. The specific activity of cytosolic peptidase, leucine-alanine peptidase sharply increased to on day 8, then suddenly declined to 12 DAH and further decreased until 20 DAH. After this date, in contrast to enzymes of brush border membranes, it sharply decreased to 25 DAH and continued to gradually decline until the end of the experiment. These converse expressions were indicative of a maturation of enterocytes and the transition to an adult mode of digestion.  相似文献

Long-distance bird migration is fueled by energy gathered at stopover sites along the migration route. The refueling rate at stopover sites is a determinant of time spent at stopovers and impacts the overall speed of migration. Refueling rate during spring migration may influence the fitness of individuals via changes in the probability of successful migration and reproduction during the subsequent breeding season. We evaluated four plasma lipid metabolites (triglycerides, phospholipids, β-OH-butyrate, and glycerol) as measures of refueling rate in free-living semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) captured at non-breeding areas. We described the spatial and temporal variation in metabolite concentrations among one winter site in the Dominican Republic and four stopover sites in the South Atlantic and Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain regions of North America. Triglycerides and β-OH-butyrate clearly identified spatial variation in refueling rate and stopover habitat quality. Metabolite profiles indicated that birds had higher refueling rates at one site in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain than at three sites on the South Atlantic Coastal Plain and one site in the Dominican Republic. Temporal variation in lipid metabolites during the migration season suggested that male semipalmated sandpipers gained more weight at stopovers on the South Atlantic Coastal Plain than did females, evidence of differential migration strategies for the sexes. Plasma lipid metabolites provide information on migration physiology that may help determine stopover habitat quality and reveal how migratory populations use stopover sites to refuel and successfully complete long-distance migrations.  相似文献

We measured the activities of eight digestive enzymes in four species of herbivorous and carnivorous prickleback fishes and determined the effects of ontogeny, diet, and phylogeny on these enzyme activities. Of the four species, Cebidichthys violaceus and Xiphister mucosus shift to a more herbivorous diet as they grow (> or =45 mm SL [standard length]), whereas Xiphister atropurpureus and Anoplarchus purpurescens remain carnivores throughout life. Digestive enzyme activities of small (30-40 mm SL) carnivorous juveniles were compared with those of larger (60-75 mm SL) wild-caught juveniles that had consumed a natural diet and larger (60-75 mm SL) juveniles raised on a high-protein animal diet. Cebidichthys violaceus and both species of Xiphister showed ontogenetic changes in digestive enzyme activities, whereas A. purpurescens did not. Despite dietary differences between X. atropurpureus and X. mucosus, these sister taxa displayed the most similar digestive enzyme activities from ontogenetic and dietary perspectives (high alpha-amylase and lipase and low trypsin and aminopeptidase activities), and both were more similar to C. violaceus, a member of the same largely herbivorous clade, than either was to A. purpurescens, a member of an adjacent, carnivorous clade. The results support the hypothesis that phylogeny influences digestive enzyme activities in these fishes. Anoplarchus purpurescens, a carnivore with a diverse diet, showed great plasticity in enzyme activity, especially trypsin and aminopeptidase, which were elevated in this species to the highest level among the four species after consuming the high-protein diet. These results support the hypothesis that fishes with relatively broad diets can modulate digestive enzyme activities in response to changes in dietary composition.  相似文献

We consider resource-defense polyandry and mate-access polyandryas female mating tactics in spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularia).These tactics can be distinguished by the resource females defend,female interclutch movement, expected reproductive success aftermoving, and male and female dispersion. We examine these characteristicsrelative to patterns observed in a 17-year study of spottedsandpipers, a species traditionally considered resource-defensepolyandrous. On average, 26% of spotted sandpiper females eachyear were monogamous. Older females were more likely to be polyandrous,and polyandrous females of each age employed different matingtactics. Yearlings were typically sequentially resourcedefensepolyandrous. Two-year-olds were primarily simultaneously polyandrous,exhibiting equivalent proportions of resource-defense and mate-accesspolyandry. Older females were primarily simultaneously resource-defensepolyandrous. Females tended to stay on territories where theyand/or their mates had greater breeding experience (i.e., manyclutches laid for females, many clutches diat hatched for males);females that moved went to territories where their mates hada history of breeding success. Too intensive training may lead to overreaching or overtraining. To study whether quantitative needle electromyography (QEMG) is more sensitive to detect training (mal)adaptation than muscle enzyme activities, 12 standardbred geldings trained for 32 wk in age-, breed-, and sex-matched fixed pairs. After a habituation and normal training (NT) phase (phases 1 and 2, 4 and 18 wk, respectively), with increasing intensity and duration and frequency of training sessions, an intensified training (IT) group (phase 3, 6 wk) and a control group (which continued training as in the last week of phase 2) were formed. Thereafter, all horses entered a reduced training phase (phase 4, 4 wk). One hour before a standardized exercise test (SET; treadmill), QEMG analysis and biochemical enzyme activity were performed in muscle or in biopsies from vastus lateralis and pectoralis descendens muscle in order to identify causes of changes in exercise performance and eventual (mal)adaptation in skeletal muscle. NT resulted in a significant adaptation of QEMG parameters, whereas in muscle biopsies hexokinase activity was significantly decreased. Compared with NT controls, IT induced a stronger adaptation (e.g., higher amplitude, shorter duration, and fewer turns) in QEMG variables resembling potentially synchronization of individual motor unit fiber action potentials. Despite a 19% decrease in performance of the SET after IT, enzyme activities of 3-hydroxyacyl dehydrogenase and citrate synthase displayed similar increases in control and IT animals. We conclude that 1) QEMG analysis is a more sensitive tool to monitor training adaptation than muscle enzyme activities but does not discriminate between overreaching and normal training adaptations at this training level and 2) the decreased performance as noted in this study after IT originates most likely from a central (brain) rather than peripheral level.  相似文献

Synopsis This paper reviews investigations on the ecophysiology of a population of roach, Rutilus rutilus, from a subalpine oligotrophic lake in the Austrian Tirol. Metabolic responses to season and temperature were studied in whole animals, tissues and selected enzymes. The exponent of the relationship between body mass and three levels of the metabolic rate of acclimated fish was 0.82 ± 0.02, 0.60 ± 0.15, and 0.75 ± 0.01 at 4, 12, and 20° C respectively. Various combinations of long-term acclimation to constant or seasonally fluctuating temperatures and long-term (up to 14 days) monitoring of O2 at the acclimation temperature led to the conclusion that the aerobic power of fish swimming in the routine mode does not show any sign of being temperature compensated. On the other hand, there are several indications that the energy expenditure of spontaneously swimming fish is adjusted to the seasonal pattern of environmental change and that these responses of metabolism and behaviour are controlled by both endogenous and exogenous factors. The rate of oxygen consumption of gill and muscle tissue brei from fish caught during a seasonal cycle and measured at 15° C appears to follow closely the reproductive and gonadal cycle of the living fish. The same holds for the activities of phosphofructokinase, acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase, and cytochrome oxidase. On the other hand, the Na+, K+-ATPase of the kidney shows near perfect temperature compensation when fish acclimated to 5 and 25° C are compared, whereas an equally pronounced case of inverse temperature acclimation has been reported for the activity of digestive enzymes in the gut. Summarizing these data it is pointed out that the temperature relationship of a poikilothermic organism is the sum of often very diverse temperature relationships of specific metabolic and behavioural functions. In the case of the roach, strong effects of acclimation temperature on the molecular level, sometimes in the opposite direction, combine with seasonal effects on enzyme activities and tissue respiration. However, on the whole animal level the fish behave as strictly non-compensating poikilotherms, the reproductive cycle being the only detectable influence capable of modulating the basic temperature relationship of energy expenditure.  相似文献

采用动物性饵料和人工饲料培育1~10日龄怀头鲇(Silurus soldatovi)仔稚鱼,分析测定了全鱼酸性、碱性蛋白酶、淀粉酶、脂肪酶以及碱性磷酸酶的活性。结果表明:孵化后3天开口期仔鱼已具有较高的碱性蛋白酶活性,5日龄时碱性蛋白酶比活力达到较高值,8日龄时出现低值,总体变化呈波动上升趋势;酸性蛋白酶活性在1~8日龄处于较低水平,8日龄后开始迅速升高;淀粉酶活性在5日龄左右达到最高值,随后酶活性开始下降至较低水平;脂肪酶活性变化波动较大,表现为双峰型,两个峰值分别出现在3~4日龄和6~8日龄。摄食动物性饵料仔稚鱼消化酶活性和碱性磷酸酶活性均高于摄食人工饲料。在整个早期发育过程中,碱性蛋白酶比酸性蛋白酶活性高,碱性蛋白酶、淀粉酶比活力在约8日龄仔稚鱼转变期明显下降,而酸性蛋白酶活性开始迅速升高,这说明消化酶活性的变化与仔稚鱼发育过程中消化机能转换具有相关性。怀头鲇在10日龄内碱性磷酸酶活性呈上升趋势,表明怀头鲇胃肠道功能的逐步发育完善。  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate thyroid hormone concentrations, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), in order to determine basal levels in Steller sea lions of different ages and over seasons. Serum concentrations of total T4 were highest in Steller sea lions followed by total T3 concentrations. Concentrations of free T4 and free T3 were three to four orders of magnitude lower. Concentrations for all four thyroid hormone measurements tended to a lower level as animals matured beyond the neonatal stage. When thyroid hormones from captive sea lions were evaluated across seasons, all thyroid hormones were highest in the July to September period. When compared across the geographic range, animals in southeast Alaska tended to have lower thyroid hormone levels, while the Steller sea lions west of Prince William Sound and animals from the Russian Far East had significantly higher concentrations. Significant inter-annual differences in concentrations were also observed across the geographic range. With an understanding of the basic changes in thyroid hormone concentrations, changes in plane of nutrition or life history states (i.e. fasting, pregnancy or lactation) can now be evaluated for their effect on the overall health of this endangered species.  相似文献

Summary The effect of 100 and 200 g · m-3 (50 and 100 ppb) ozone and ambient air on 4-year-old grafts of a Scots pine clone was tested in closedtop fumigation chambers. Ozone decreased the myo-inositol and inccreased the pinitol levels in the 1-year-old needles, whereas the effect in the current-year needles was less distinct. In neither case did ambient air lead to any detectable effects on these parameters compared with controls. However, there was a pronounced chamber effect in the levels of myo-inositol and pinitol compared with trees standing in the open field, where inositol was higher and pinitol lower. There is some evidence, based on visible symptoms as well as biochemical changes, that season is an important modifier of the effect of ozone on Scots pine.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) deposition has increased dramatically worldwide, which may affect forest soils in various ways. In this study, we conducted a short-term manipulation experiment of N addition on two types of forest soils (urban and rural soils) found in Korea. N addition significantly decreased phenol oxidase activities in urban soil samples; however, it did not affect those in rural soils. Furthermore, N addition did not change β-glucosidase and N-acetylglucosaminidase activities, except for β-glucosidase activities in the O layer of rural soils. Changes in microbial biomass and general activity (dehydrogenase activity) were not induced by N addition, except for dehydrogenase in the A layer of urban soils. Although N addition did not change the extractable soil nutrients, organic matter, and water contents significantly, it enhanced nutrient leaching and resulted in lower pH leachate. These results suggest that excessive N addition to forest soils may induce nutrient leaching in the long-term. Overall results of our study also suggest that N addition may induce retardation of organic matter decomposition in soils; however, such a response may depend on the intensity of previous exposure to N deposition.  相似文献
