Summary Para and prevertebral ganglia of the cat were investigated for immunoreactivity (IR) against neurotensin (NT), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), substance P (SP) and enkephalin (ENK). Dopamine--hydroxylase- (DBH)-IR was studied in consecutive sections to correlate the distribution of noradrenergic/adrenergic neurons with that of peptidergic nerve fibres and cells.In paravertebral (cervical and thoracic) ganglia, NT-IR or ENK-IR nerve fibres were seen in areas in which DBH-IR fibre networks also occurred. NT-IR varicosities were often in close contact with perikarya of principal ganglionic cells on which DBH-IR varicosities also terminated. Such an association was rarely seen between ENK-IR and DBH-IR fibre baskets. NT-IR and ENK-IR fibre baskets were not found to occur around the same principal ganglionic cell. The distribution of VIP-IR and SP-IR nerve fibres did not coincide with that of DBH-IR fibres.In prevertebral ganglia (celiac-superior mesenteric and inferior mesenteric) DBH-IR or VIP-IR varicosities surrounded the majority of principal ganglionic neurons. ENK-IR or SP-IR fibres were closely associated with only a minority of the neurons; NT-IR networks were rather sparse. Some principal neurons were approached by DBH-IR fibres and by different peptide-IR fibres.In paravertebral ganglia some principal ganglionic cells contained VIP-IR, a few of which were also surrounded by NT-IR varicosities. VIP-IR perikarya in prevertebral ganglia were extremely rare. No NT-IR, SP-IR or ENK-IR principal ganglionic cells were found.Glomus-like paraganglionic cell clusters in paravertebral and prevertebral ganglia exhibited DBH-IR cell bodies. Moreover, the clusters also contained ENK-IR or SP-IR cells. NT-IR varicosities were observed adjacent to clustered paraganglionic cells. The experiments were performed on ten chronic low cerveau isolé cats: in eight cats the brain stem transection was prepontine and in two cats, intercollicular. The preparations survived from 24 to 3 days. During 24-36 hr sessions the ECoG activity was continuously recorded, and the ocular and ECoG components of the orienting reflexes to visual and olfactory stimuli were studied. 2. Three periods can be recognized in the recovery process of the low cerveau isolé cat. They are called acute, early chronic and late chronic stages. The acute stage lasts 1 day and the early chronic stage seems to last 3 weeks at least. During the acute stage the ability to desynchronize the EEG, either spontaneously or in response to sensory stimulations, is dramatically impaired and the pupils are fissurated. Thus the cat is comatous. 4. During the early chronic stage, although the ECoG synchronization-desynchronization cycle and the associated fissurated myosis-myosis cycle already exist, the episodes of ECoG desynchronization occupy only a small percentage of time and usually develop slowly. Visual and olfactory stimuli are often ineffective. Thus the cat is semicomatous. In the late chronic stage the sleep-waking cycle is present. The animal can be easily awakened by visual and olfactory stimuli. The intensity of the ECoG arousal to visual stimuli and the distribution of time between alert wakefulness, drowsiness, light synchronized sleep and deep synchronized sleep are similar to those in the chronic pretrigeminal cat. The recovery of the cerveau isolé seems to reach a steady level when the sleep-waking cycle becomes similar to that present in the chronic pretrigeminal cat. During the whole survival period the vertical following reflex is abortive.  相似文献

The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common parasite of domestic cats and dogs worldwide. Due to the morphological ambiguity of C. felis and a lack of — particularly largescale — phylogenetic data, we do not know whether global C. felis populations are morphologically and genetically conserved, or whether human-mediated migration of domestic cats and dogs has resulted in homogenous global populations. To determine the ancestral origin of the species and to understand the level of global pervasion of the cat flea and related taxa, our study aimed to document the distribution and phylogenetic relationships of Ctenocephalides fleas found on cats and dogs worldwide. We investigated the potential drivers behind the establishment of regional cat flea populations using a global collection of fleas from cats and dogs across six continents. We morphologically and molecularly evaluated six out of the 14 known taxa comprising genus Ctenocephalides, including the four original C. felis subspecies (Ctenocephalides felis felis, Ctenocephalides felis strongylus, Ctenocephalides felis orientis and Ctenocephalides felis damarensis), the cosmopolitan species Ctenocephalides canis and the African species Ctenocephalides connatus. We confirm the ubiquity of the cat flea, representing 85% of all fleas collected (4357/5123). Using a multigene approach combining two mitochondrial (cox1 and cox2) and two nuclear (Histone H3 and EF-1α) gene markers, as well as a cox1 survey of 516 fleas across 56 countries, we demonstrate out-of-Africa origins for the genus Ctenocephalides and high levels of genetic diversity within C. felis. We define four bioclimatically limited C. felis clusters (Temperate, Tropical I, Tropical II and African) using maximum entropy modelling. This study defines the global distribution, African origin and phylogenetic relationships of global Ctenocephalides fleas, whilst resolving the taxonomy of the C. felis subspecies and related taxa. We show that humans have inadvertently precipitated the expansion of C. felis throughout the world, promoting diverse population structure and bioclimatic plasticity. By demonstrating the link between the global cat flea communities and their affinity for specific bioclimatic niches, we reveal the drivers behind the establishment and success of the cat flea as a global parasite.  相似文献

In recent years, there has been a growing concern regarding populations of cats who are homeless. Shelters are constantly overwhelmed by the influx of cats without caregivers and are seeking solutions to enhance positive outcomes for them. In 2014, the Guelph Humane Society implemented a population management program to expedite the movement of cats through the shelter by decreasing the average nonhuman animal’s length of stay using scheduled intakes to control for overcrowding and by implementing strategies to increase adoption rates. This study investigated the time trends in admission rates of cats to the Guelph Humane Society to assess the effectiveness of a population management program called Capacity for Care using a generalized linear autoregressive moving average model. From January 2011 to December 2015, a total of 3295 live cats were admitted to the Guelph Humane Society. When the analysis was adjusted to account for admissions of kittens, there was a significant reduction in admissions for adult cats (p < .01) following the introduction of the population management program. The results also showed a strong seasonal peak in total admissions during the summer months.  相似文献

On oceanic islands, nest site availability can be an important factor regulating seabird population dynamics. The potential for birds to secure a nest to reproduce can be an important component of their life histories. The dates at which different seabird species arrive at colonies to breed will have important consequences for their relative chances of success. Early arrival on the island allows birds to obtain nests more easily and have higher reproductive success. However, the presence of an introduced predator may reverse this situation. For instance, in the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen archipelago, early arriving birds suffer heavy predation from introduced cats. Cats progressively switch from seabirds to rabbits, since the local rabbit population starts to peak after early arriving seabird species have already returned to the colony. When late-arriving birds arrive, cat predation pressure on seabirds is thus weaker. In this paper, we investigate the assumption that the advantage of early nest mnopolization conferred to early arriving birds may be counterbalanced by the cost resulting from predation. We develop a mathematical model representing a simplified situation in which two insular seabird species differ only in their arrival date at the colony site and compete for nesting sites. We conclude that predation may ensure the coexistence of the two bird species or favor the late-arriving species, but only when seasonal variations in predation pressure are large. Interestingly, we conclude that arriving early is only favorable until a given level where high reproductive success no longer compensates for the long exposure to strong predation pressure. Our work suggests that predation can help to maintain the balance between species of different phenologies.  相似文献

New Zealanders (n = 354) rated the acceptability of lethal and nonlethal cat control methods and the importance of conservation and welfare. Lethal control was more acceptable for feral cats than strays; for nonlethal control, the inverse was true. More than concern for the welfare of cats subjected to control, perceived conservation benefits, risk of disease transfer, and companion cat welfare dictated the acceptability of control measures. Similarly, the welfare consideration for groups of cats differed, transitioning from companion (highest) to feral (lowest). Differences in attitudes toward acceptability of control methods were evident. In particular, nonhuman animal professionals ranked lethal control as more acceptable than did nonanimal professionals. Cat caregivers (owners) considered both conservation and welfare issues of greater importance than did nonowners. Owners ranked the acceptability of nonlethal control methods higher for stray cats, but not feral, than did nonowners. This research indicates that the use of the terms stray and feral may have significant impact on cats in New Zealand. There is also a greater consideration of conservation values than of welfare in stray and feral cat control.  相似文献

Feline leishmaniasis (FL) is a quite uncommon feature. Clinical disease has been described in cats since nineties begin. More than 40 reports in world literature have been referred, but the clinical cases have been only recently well defined. Most of the reports focus on infected cats living in endemic areas, even if, more recently FL due to Leishmania infantum was found in Sao Paulo State, in Brazil where autochthonous human or canine leishmaniasis cases have never reported. In Europe clinical cases of FL have been described from Portugal, France, Spain and Italy from 1996 to 2002. When a typing of the etiological agent was performed L. infantum was identified in all reported cases. In some endemic areas serological surveys have also been carried out in cats, using IHAT in Egypt, Western blot in France or IFAT in Italy. Sixty Egyptian cats had low serological antibody titers, from 1/32 to 1/128, in the endemic focus of canine leishmaniasis of Alpes Maritimes 12 out of 97 (12.5%) cats showed antibodies versus antigens 14 and/or 18 kDa of L. infantum. A previous survey by means of IFAT in Liguria and Toscana on 110 and 158 feline sera respectively reports a seroprevalence of 0.9% with low titer, while sera from Sicily seem to be positive at higher dilutions. Animals living in an endemic area can develop specific antibodies against leishmania and, in our experience, they can be evidentiated by means of IFAT. The antibody titers appear to be lower in affected cats than in dogs, even if the number of clinical cases is very scanty. PCR tests on feline blood samples are in progress, but preliminary results confirm the presence of leishmania DNA in such specimens. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the more frequent form in cats and it was reported from several countries. Typical signs include nodular to ulcer or crusty lesions on the nose, lips, ears, eyelids, alopecia: clinical signs of cutaneous FL are unspecific and in endemic area this infection must be taken into account. Visceral leishmaniasis is not common in cats: this form shows visceral involvement: liver and spleen are interested, with lymph nodes and kidney. The cat probably has to considerate to play an active role in the disease, in contrast to goats, calves and horses who could act as accidental reservoirs of leishmania, while sheep appears to be not susceptible to experimental infection. In endemic foci for kala-azar in Sudan cows, goats and donkeys had a high prevalence of specific antibodies. Recently in Europe sporadic cases of equine leishmaniasis have been reported: L. infantum was the causative agent. Equine leishmaniasis appears as a self-healing skin-dwelling disease, with a massive accumulation of parasites. The animals do not often show detectable specific antibodies and recover without any chemotherapy. Untreated affected cats can frequently die and we also observed lymph nodes and blood involvement indicating a spread of leishmania in feline hosts. The epidemiological role of the cat has never been clarified due also to lack of xenodiagnosis trials. This species is believed to have a high degree of natural resistance, as observed following experimental infection. Some of the affected cats were FIV and/or FeLV positive and these viroses such as stress may induce an impaired cellular immune response, even if leishmania infected cat was not submitted to CD4+, CD8+ lymphocyte counts nor other immunological test. However the resistance of the cat to leishmania infection probably depends on genetic factors, not strictly related to cell mediated immunity, taking into account the high seroprevalence of FIV infections (30%) in our country versus the number of clinical cases.  相似文献

The technique of horseradish peroxidase retrograde axonal transport and local electrical stimulation of the pre-Botzinger complex was used to study the connections between neurones of the bulbar respiratory nucleus and descending pathways from bulbar nuclei in the cat spinal cord. The mammalian visual system is one of the most intensively investigated sensory systems. However, our knowledge of the typical input it is operating on is surprisingly limited. To address this issue, we seek to learn about the natural visual environment and the world as seen by a cat. With a CCD camera attached to their head, cats explore several outdoor environments and videos of natural stimuli are recorded from the animals perspective. The statistical analysis of these videos reveals several remarkable properties. First, we find an anisotropy of oriented contours with an enhanced occurrence of horizontal orientations, earlier described in the oblique effect as a predominance of the two cardinal orientations. Second, contrast is not elevated in the center of the images, suggesting different mechanisms of fixation point selection as compared to humans. Third, analyzing a sequence of images we find that the precise position of contours varies faster than their orientation. Finally, collinear contours prevail over parallel shifted contours, matching recent physiological and anatomical results. These findings demonstrate the rich structure of natural visual stimuli and its direct relation to extensively studied anatomical and physiological issues.  相似文献

Using point-to-point testing, the spatial organization of receptive fields (RF) of the neurons of the lateral geniculate body (LGB) was studied in cats with pretrigeminally transected brainstcm (without general anesthesia). In 60% of studied neurons (96 units of 160 examined), configuration of their RF considerably differed from round or ellipsoid. The shape of such RF was frequently rather complex, and they were qualified as irregular receptive fields (IRF). Presentation of the stable flickering spot throughout the entire surface of 60 IRF (63%) evoked qualitatively similar responses of a neuron, i.e., these IRF were homogeneous. In 29 cells the responses were of theon-off type, 22 neurons generatedoff responses, andon responses were observed in 9 cells. In the rest of the IRF (37%), it was possible to differentiate the subfields, whose stimulation evoked generation of different types of responses, i.e., these IRF were heterogeneous. Three points located approximately 8 mm apart were identified in a dorsolateral funiculus of the lower thoracic spinal cord in mesencephalic cats, each producing stepping movements on the ipsilateral hindlimb when stimulated. An area 5–17 mm caudal to the caudal stepping point (SP) was scanned for neurons responding synaptically to stimulating the rostral or caudal SP prior and subsequent to electrolytic coagulation of the medial SP. Relative incidence of neurons excited by stimulating the caudal SP did not change following this type of lesioning, although stimulation of the rostral SP at the rate of 4 Hz induced response 5 times less frequently than before. Even stimulation of the rostral SP at the rate of 40–60 Hz, which had considerably increased firing index prior to coagulation, could only produce excitation in tiny numbers of neurons. About 40% of neurons (114/289) studied in the cat area 17 gave a larger (by 3.06 +/- 0.32 times on average) response to a flashed cross, corner or y-like figures centered in the RF than to an optimal single bar. Most such neurons (72%) were found to be highly selective both to shape (angle between the lines) and to orientation of these figures. In the studied neuronal selection we have also found all possible types of invariance of sensitivity to orientation and/or shape of these figures. Separated and combined stimulation of RF center and surrounding area revealed in 44 units summation, antagonism or absence of interaction of these zones by the selectivity index (cross/bar response ratio). Cross-sensitivity was investigated in 85 V1 neurons before, during and after local blockade of GABAA ergic inhibition by microiontophoretical application of bicuculline. Inhibition either emerged or increased cross-sensitivity (32% of cells), or depressed it (36% of cases), while in some neurons it does not influenced the function. Possible mechanisms of the described effects are discussed as well as their functional implication for second-order feature extraction in the visual cortex: selective or invariant sensitivity of neurons to the shape and orientation of the line-crossings.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal structures of receptive-fields (RF) have been studied for simple cells in area 18 of eat by measuring the temporal transfer function (TTF) over different locations (subregions) within the RF. The temporal characteristics of different subregions differed from each other in the absolute phase shift (APS) to visual stimuli. Two types of relationships can be seen: (i)The APS varied continuously from one subregion to the next: (ii) A 180°-phase jump was seen as the stimulus position changed somewhere within the receptive field. Spatiotemporal receptive field profiles have been determined by applying reverse Fourier analysis to responses in the frequency domain. For the continuous type, spatial and temporal characteristics cannot be dissociated (space time inseparable) and the spatiotemporal structure is oriented. On the contrary, the spatial and temporal characteristics for the jumping type can be dissociated (space-time separable) and the structure is not oriented in the space-time plane. Based on the APSs measured at different subregions, the optimal direction of motion and optimal spatial frequency of neurons can be predicted.  相似文献

To understand the rules by which axons lay down their synaptic boutons we analyzed the linear bouton distributions in 39 neurons (23 spiny, 13 smooth) and 3 thalamic axons, which were filled intracellularly with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) during in vivo experiments in cat area 17. The variation of the total number of boutons and the total axonal length was large (789–7912 boutons, 12–126 mm). The overall linear bouton density for smooth cells was higher than that of spiny cells and thalamic afferents (mean ± sd, 110 ± 21 and 78 ± 27 boutons per mm of axonal length). The distribution of boutons varied according to their location on the tree. Distal axon collaterals (first and second order segments in Horton-Strahler ordering) of smooth neurons had a 3.5 times higher, spiny cells and thalamic afferents a 2 times higher bouton density compared to the higher order (more proximal) segments. The distribution of interbouton intervals was positively skewed and similar for cells of the same type. In most cases a γ-distribution fitted well, but the distributions had a tendency to have a heavier tail. To a first approximation these bouton distributions are consistent with both diffuse and specific models of interneuronal connections. Quite simple rules can explain these distributions and the connections between the different classes of neurons.  相似文献

It is unclear if skeletal muscles act mechanically as independent actuators. The purpose of the present study was to investigate force transmission from soleus (SO) muscle for physiological lengths as well as relative positions in the intact cat hindlimb. We hypothesized that force transmission from SO fibers will be affected by length changes of its two-joint synergists. Ankle plantar flexor moment on excitation of the SO was measured for various knee angles (70-140 degrees ). This involved substantial length changes of gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles. Ankle angle was kept constant (80 degrees -90 degrees ). However, SO ankle moment was not significantly affected by changes in knee angle; neither were half-relaxation time and the maximal rate of relaxation (P > 0.05). Following tenotomy, SO ankle moment decreased substantially (55 +/- 16%) but did not reach zero, indicating force transmission via connective tissues to the Achilles tendon (i.e., epimuscular myofascial force transmission). During contraction SO muscle shortened to a much greater extent than in the intact case (16.0 +/- 0.6 vs. 1.0 +/- 0.1 mm), which resulted in a major position shift relative to its synergists. If the SO was moved back to its position corresponding to the intact condition, SO ankle moment approached zero, and most muscle force was exerted at the distal SO tendon. Our results also suggested that in vivo the lumped intact tissues linking SO to its synergists are slack or are operating on the toe region of the stress-strain curve. Thus, within the experimental conditions of the present study, the intact cat soleus muscle appears to act mechanically as an independent actuator.  相似文献
