The infection rate of eugregarine parasites, Cephaloidophora pacifica, within the digestive tract of larval Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was examined using samples collected from the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. Immature and mature eugregarine gamont stages were found at all larval stages older than Calyptopis I stage. Eugregarine infection in 14.0% (N = 108) of the first feeding stage (Calyptopis I) suggested that krill larvae are at risk from being infected during physiological transition from non-feeding to feeding stages. Eugregarine prevalence and intensity of infection at the three calyptopis stages increased with stage/krill length. Statistical analysis showed that the intensity of C. pacifica infection also increased with host density. Thus, krill density is probably a key determinant of the intensity of infection. We found gamont stage eugregarines in the host hind-gut, blocking the passage of food. Eugregarine infections in larval krill may have a negative impact on digestion and absorption in the host digestive tract.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of the gregarine Cephaloidophora pacifica Avdeev (Order Eugregarinida) within the digestive tract of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was examined using samples collected from the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula, in order to evaluate their strategy for maintaining their population. Eugregarines were observed to accumulate in the front section of the gut at any host maturity stage. The results of statistical analysis showed that eugregarines at immediately pre-molt stage of the krill decreased significantly in the posterior of the hind-gut, and increased in the anterior of the hind-gut. Thus, the krill's molt stage may be one factor affecting the spatial distribution of eugregarines. As a strategy for avoiding discharge to the outer environment by molting, eugregarines may move to a safety zone (mid-gut).  相似文献

The effects of starvation on ultrastructure of digestive gland cells were studied in furcilia larvae of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba: hereafter krill). Under laboratory conditions, larvae were starved for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days, and their R-cells were investigated by transmission electron microscope. R-cells are thought to play a role in the storage and absorption of nutrients. In fed larvae, numerous mitochondria scattered homogenously, and densely packed microvilli were observed on the apical surface of R-cells. After 5 days of starvation, mitochondria were swollen and were found concentrated in the apical region in R-cells. A decrease in cell volume and an increase in thickness of the basal lamina with many irregular infoldings were observed after 10–15 days of starvation. Lipid droplets were rarely found in the R-cells regardless of whether larvae had been fed or starved suggesting an inability to store lipid. Without the ability to store energy in the form of lipid, survival would be dependant on sourcing continuous food until maturation.  相似文献

Spawning dates of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, were calculated from larval stage compositions, and corrected using data on maturity stage composition of the adult krill. Both original and literature data obtained from the Antarctic Peninsula-Bellingshausen Sea area and around the Antarctic continent were used. A time series (1975/76–1986/87) for several subareas of the Antarctic Peninsula-Bellingshausen Sea area indicates considerable variation in the krill spawning start, maxima and completion. In particular years (1975/76, 1980/81), krill spawning in the western Atlantic sector began relatively early, was intensive, and completed early. Some years (1977/78, 1981/82) were characterised by long and non-synchronised krill spawning. Compiled data sets for the Atlantic sector (1980/81), the entire Antarctic (1983/84) and the east Indian-west Pacific Antarctic waters (1981–85) reveal some spatial patterns in krill reproductive timing. In relation to spawning timing variation, the habitats of the krill population fall into five categories: (1) areas with an early beginning (late Novemberearly December) and a variable, but normally long, duration (3–3.5 months) of krill spawning; this is generally the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, (2) areas with an early beginning, but a short duration of krill spawning (Gerlache Strait), (3) areas with a highly variable (within 1–1.5 months) beginning and a relatively long duration (ca. 3 months) of krill spawning (Bransfield Strait, Palmer Archipelago), (4) areas with a late beginning (late December–January) and a long duration of krill spawning (Bellingshausen Sea, D'Urville Sea, and Balleny Islands area), and (5) areas with a delayed beginning, but a very short duration (ca. 1.5 months) of krill spawning (Ross Sea slope, probably the Coastal Current area off the Lasarev Sea shelf and in the south-eastern Weddell Sea. These patterns can be partly explained by peculiarities of the ice regime in particular areas and by routes of krill movement within water circulation systems.  相似文献

In many shrimp farms in the Kyushu and Chugoku areas of Japan, the so-called mid-gut gland cloudy disease of kuruma shrimp larvae(Penaeus japonicus) has occurred since 1971. The pathological changes associated with this baculoviral mid-gut gland necrosis (BMN) are extensive cellular necrosis, collapse of mid-gut gland cells, nuclear hypertrophy and finally karyorrhexis. Electron microscopic examination revealed the presence of virions and virogenic stages in the affected nuclei. Average length and diameter of the virions detected was 310 and 72 nm, respectively; nucleocapsids were 250 nm in size. Virions enclosing 2 nucleocapsids within a single envelope were rarely found. The spirally arranged capsomeres were at an angle of 37 to 38° to a horizontal line meeting at right angles with the long axis of the virion. Infectivity trials resulted in high mortality of healthy mysis and juveniles (2nd post-larval stage). Juveniles at the 9th post-larval stage showed no mortality, although they could be infected easily by the agent. Hypertrophied nuclei in squashed and stained preparations of the affected gland cells can be considered to be of reliable presumptive diagnostic character, and fluorescent antibody staining can be employed to confirm the diagnosis of BMN.  相似文献

A change in photoperiod has been implicated in triggering a transition from an active to a quiescent state in Antarctic krill. We examined this process at the molecular level, to identify processes that are affected when passing a photoperiodic threshold. Antarctic krill captured in the austral autumn were divided into two groups and immediately incubated either under a photoperiod of 12 h light:12 h darkness (LD), simulating the natural light cycle, or in continuous darkness (DD), simulating winter. All other conditions were kept identical between incubations. After 7 days of adaptation, krill were sampled every 4 h over a 24 h period and frozen. Total RNA was extracted from the heads and pooled to construct a suppression subtractive hybridisation library. Differentially expressed sequences were identified and annotated into functional categories through database sequence matching. We found a difference in gene expression between LD and DD krill, with LD krill expressing more genes involved in functions such as metabolism, motor activity, protein binding and various other cellular activities. Eleven of these genes were examined further with quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses, which revealed that expression levels were significantly higher in LD krill. The genes affected by simulated photoperiodic change are consistent with known features of quiescence, such as a slowing of moult rate, a lowering of activity levels and a reduction in metabolic rate. The expression of proteases involved in apolysis, where the old cuticle separates from the epidermis, showed particular sensitivity to photoperiod and point to the mechanism by which moult rate is adjusted seasonally. Our results show that key processes are already responding at the molecular level after just 7 days of exposure to a changed photoperiodic cycle. We propose that krill switch rapidly between active and quiescent states and that the photoperiodic cycle plays a key role in this process.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The structure and life history of a new species of eugregarine, Gregarina garnhami n.sp., is described from the intestinal caeca and mid-gut of Schistocerca gregaria Forsk. The parasite destroys considerable areas of the caecal epithelium and in cases of heavy infection, the masses of parasites present in the mid-gut result in the formation of localized barriers between the gut wall and the food material in the lumen. The cephalont and sporont stages of gregarines from Locusta migratoria migratorioides R. & F. and Anacrydium aegyptium Linn. are shown to be similar to those from Schistocerca gregaria and are believed to belong to the same species.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton abundance, body area spectrum, biomass, gut fluorescence and electron transfer system (ETS) activity were studied in the Antarctic Peninsula during the post-bloom scenario in these waters. Values of abundance and biomass were rather low and decreased sharply from the slope waters to the coastal area. In contrast, specific gut fluorescence and ETS activity were high in the coastal area and decreased through the shelf-break. Large copepods were very scarce, similarly to the post-bloom conditions in phytoplankton where large cells are not abundant and small cells such as flagellates dominate the water column. The vertical distribution showed two well defined layers by day, one at the surface which corresponded to krill organisms and a second at depth (>300 m) formed mainly by the large copepod Metridia gerlachei. During the short night, this layer ascended at the time that krill at the surface migrated to deeper waters as observed from acoustics and net sampling. This observation and the absence of large copepods over the shelf suggest that krill consumption on large phytoplankton cells during the bloom is followed by an increase in predation upon mesozooplankton. It also suggests that krill decrease the abundance and biomass of mesozooplankton over the shelf and continues their predation upon mesopelagic copepods during the post-bloom in Antarctic waters. This behaviour could explain the long ago described impoverishment in mesozooplankton south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.  相似文献

Melatonin, the chief secretory product of the vertebrate pineal gland is suspected to be a ubiquitous molecule principally involved in the transduction of photoperiodic information. Besides vertebrates, melatonin has been detected throughout phylogeny in numerous non-vertebrate taxa. In the present study, the occurrence of melatonin in Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and its possible role in mediating seasonal metabolic changes was evaluated. Melatonin was quantified by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) purified extracts of eyestalks and hemolymph of krill sampled in the Lazarev Sea during the Antarctic winter and summer. In addition, oxygen uptake rates and the activities of the metabolic enzyme malate dehydrogenase (MDH) were recorded to assess the metabolic status of krill. Validation of melatonin measurements was carried out on the basis of three different extraction methods with parallel determination of melatonin by ELISA in crude extracts and in HPLC purified extracts, and after derivatization of melatonin under alkaline conditions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. A significantly higher respiration rate and MDH activity was found in summer krill than in winter krill indicating that krill was in a state of reduced metabolic activity during winter. However, neither during winter nor during summer there were detectable melatonin concentrations in the visual system or hemolymph of krill. Based on these results, we question a mediating role of melatonin in the control of seasonal metabolic changes in Antarctic krill.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the mid-gut cells of female Nasonia vitripennis is described. The mid-gut consists of a uniform, single-cell epithelium. The cells of different gut regions were analysed using morphometric techniques in order to determine any differences in the components. The structure of the cells is described in the unfed animal, and after varying periods of feeding on host body-fluids. Tissues were sampled after 12 h and 24 h of feeding on host body-fluids and after 24 h feeding/24 h starvation. The cells were found to be complex and contain an organelle component that allows solute-transport and extensive lipid synthesis. A limited cytochemical analysis involving the lysosomal marker enzyme-acid phosphatase — and the respiratory enzyme — cytochrome oxidase was carried out.We are indebted to Professor E.W. Krill (Euphausia superba) carapace measurements (length and width; mm) collected from plankton tows in the South Shetland Islands (SSI), Antarctica are used to test the generality of a common discriminant function developed to reconstruct krill length frequencies in Antarctic fur seal diets for the area surrounding South Georgia (SG). Total length and sex ratio of krill in the SSI were overestimated by 5.6 and 154%, respectively, when the SG allometric equations were applied to 3 years (2003–2005) of data. These errors arise and increase as a result of krill population dynamics, specifically recruitment that contributes large proportions of immature krill, misclassified as males by the SG discriminant function. We develop sex-specific regression models based on separate discriminant functions that provide significantly better discriminatory power. However, our analysis indicates that reconstructions of krill sex ratio and length composition in the ocean environment are less reliable in years when the ratio of immature to mature krill is high. For the SSI area, five out of 14 years (35.7%) surveyed (1992–2005) had proportions of immature to mature adult krill ≥ 0.50.  相似文献

The diet of lactating female Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella at South Georgia was investigated during the pup-rearing period (January/March) of 1991–1994. Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was the main prey item, occurring in 88% of all scats (n=497), whereas fish occurred in 47% and squid in 5% of all scats. There was considerable intra- and inter-annual variation in the characteristics of krill taken by fur seals. The distribution of krill sizes taken suggests that fur seals are not actively selecting particular sizes of krill and, therefore, that the krill in the diet reflects the krill available around South Georgia. The absence of group 3 krill (44–48 mm in length) in the South Georgia area, as indicated by their absence in the diet of seals, is suggested as a possible reason for low availability of krill and the subsequent reproductive failure among krill predators. The frequency of occurrence of fish was much higher than in previous studies; the pattern of fish consumption showed a consistent seasonal pattern in 3 of the 4 years studied. Of the total number of the myctophid Protomyctophum choriodon, the most numerous fish taxon, 98% were taken between early February and the middle of March. Champsocephalus gunnari and Lepidonotothen larseni agg., which both feed on krill, dominated the fish component of the diet outside this period and together constituted 94% of the total estimated biomass of fish consumed. The intra- and inter-annual variability in the diet of Antarctic fur seals emphasise the need for diet studies to be conducted during the entire pup-rearing periods of several years. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba; hereafter krill) are an incredibly abundant pelagic crustacean which has a wide, but patchy, distribution in the Southern Ocean. Several studies have examined the potential for population genetic structuring in krill, but DNA‐based analyses have focused on a limited number of markers and have covered only part of their circum‐Antarctic range. We used mitochondrial DNA and restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (RAD‐seq) to investigate genetic differences between krill from five sites, including two from East Antarctica. Our mtDNA results show no discernible genetic structuring between sites separated by thousands of kilometres, which is consistent with previous studies. Using standard RAD‐seq methodology, we obtained over a billion sequences from >140 krill, and thousands of variable nucleotides were identified at hundreds of loci. However, downstream analysis found that markers with sufficient coverage were primarily from multicopy genomic regions. Careful examination of these data highlights the complexity of the RAD‐seq approach in organisms with very large genomes. To characterize the multicopy markers, we recorded sequence counts from variable nucleotide sites rather than the derived genotypes; we also examined a small number of manually curated genotypes. Although these analyses effectively fingerprinted individuals, and uncovered a minor laboratory batch effect, no population structuring was observed. Overall, our results are consistent with panmixia of krill throughout their distribution. This result may indicate ongoing gene flow. However, krill's enormous population size creates substantial panmictic inertia, so genetic differentiation may not occur on an ecologically relevant timescale even if demographically separate populations exist.  相似文献

The ovary of the salp Pegea socia (Bosc, 1802) is located at the end of an atrial diverticulum. The ovary consists of a single oocyte encased in a layer of follicle cells and is connected to the atrial epithelium by an oviduct. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the oocyte lacks a vitelline layer, cortical granules, and yolk granules and that the oviduct lacks a continuous lumen. What previous authors thought was a lumen is a line of dense intercellular junctions running down the center of the oviduct. The sperm nucleus in this species, as in other salps, is elongate. The tubular mitochondrion spirals about the sperm nucleus giving it a corkscrew-shape appearance. Sperm reach the ovary when the oocyte is still at the germinal vesicle stage. Many sperm swim up the atrial diverticulum and burrow through the cells of the atrial epithelium, oviduct, and follicular epithelium. Thus oviduct shortening, which occurs when the oocyte is in the meiotic divisions, is evidently unrelated to sperm moving up the oviduct. All previous authors, who argued either that a continuous lumen is necessary for sperm to move up the oviduct or that sperm bypass the oviduct, were incorrect. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Feeding behaviour of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) on salps was observed in shipboard experiments during the 1994/1995 Kaiyo Maru Antarctic Ocean research cruise. The feeding rate was more than 0.5 salp/krill per day. When offered ethanol extracts of four prey types, salps, phytoplankton, krill and polychaetes, krill preferred the salp extracts. This evidence implies that the substances extracted from salps were most attractive to krill. These results might indicate a tight ecological relationship between krill and salps. Length–weight relationships (LWRs) of five fish species commonly associated with Antarctic krill fishery, were determined. Samples were collected with Chinese krill trawler (codend mesh size 2 cm) in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean from January to August 2016. Data on LWRs and the relationships between weight and standard length as well as weight and total length of those species were updated for the database of FishBase. Those data on fish species derived from Antarctic krill fishery will be very helpful in understanding the interaction between krill fishery and the associated fish community.  相似文献

The diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated at Stranger Point, King George Island, through the analysis of scats during three consecutive summer seasons (1996, 1997, 1998). Overall, fish and krill were the most frequent prey occurring, respectively, in an average of 82.9% and 78.8% of samples (n = 131), followed by penguins (22.8%) and cephalopods (17.8%). Myctophids constituted almost 90% of the fish predated, with Electrona antarctica and Gymnoscopelus nicholsi being the most abundant and frequent species consumed. All fish taxa identified were krill feeding species suggesting that seals foraged mainly on a krill and a fish community associated with krill aggregations. However, a seasonal change was observed in the relative proportions of the different prey taxa, with a progressive decrease with time in the occurrence of krill and a concomitant increase of fish, penguins and squid. Possible influence of the strong 1997/98 ENSO event is discussed.  相似文献

The krill surplus hypothesis of unlimited prey resources available for Antarctic predators due to commercial whaling in the 20th century has remained largely untested since the 1970s. Rapid warming of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) over the past 50 years has resulted in decreased seasonal ice cover and a reduction of krill. The latter is being exacerbated by a commercial krill fishery in the region. Despite this, humpback whale populations have increased but may be at a threshold for growth based on these human-induced changes. Understanding how climate-mediated variation in prey availability influences humpback whale population dynamics is critical for focused management and conservation actions. Using an 8-year dataset (2013–2020), we show that inter-annual humpback whale pregnancy rates, as determined from skin-blubber biopsy samples (n = 616), are positively correlated with krill availability and fluctuations in ice cover in the previous year. Pregnancy rates showed significant inter-annual variability, between 29% and 86%. Our results indicate that krill availability is in fact limiting and affecting reproductive rates, in contrast to the krill surplus hypothesis. This suggests that this population of humpback whales may be at a threshold for population growth due to prey limitations. As a result, continued warming and increased fishing along the WAP, which continue to reduce krill stocks, will likely impact this humpback whale population and other krill predators in the region. Humpback whales are sentinel species of ecosystem health, and changes in pregnancy rates can provide quantifiable signals of the impact of environmental change at the population level. Our findings must be considered paramount in developing new and more restrictive conservation and management plans for the Antarctic marine ecosystem and minimizing the negative impacts of human activities in the region.  相似文献

Antarctic and sub-Antarctic seabirds, marine mammals, and human fisheries concentrate their foraging efforts on a single species, Antarctic krill (Euphausiasuperba). Because these predators may have a significant effect on krill abundance, we estimated the energy and prey requirements of Adelie (Pygoscelisadeliae), chinstrap (Pygoscelisantarctica), and gentoo (Pygoscelispapua) penguins and female Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalusgazella) breeding on the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica and compared these estimates with catch statistics from the Antarctic krill fishery. Published data on field metabolic rate, population size, diet, prey energy content, and metabolic efficiency were used to estimate prey requirements of these breeding, adult, land-based predators and their dependent offspring. Due to their large population size, chinstrap penguins were the most significant krill predators during the period examined, consuming an estimated 7.8 × 108 kg krill, followed by Adelie penguins (3.1 × 107 kg), gentoo penguins (1.2 × 107 kg), and Antarctic fur seals (3.6 × 106 kg). Total consumption of all land-based predators on the South Shetland Islands was estimated at 8.3 × 108 kg krill. The commercial krill fishery harvest in the South Shetland Island region (1.0 × 108 kg) was approximately 12% of this. Commercial harvest coincides seasonally and spatially with peak penguin and fur seal prey demands, and may affect prey availability to penguins and fur seals. This differs from the conclusions of Ichii et al. who asserted that the potential for competition between South Shetland predators and the commercial krill fishery is low.
