Diurnal changes in basal cortisol levels and stress reactivity were assessed in male and female squirrel monkeys. Blood samples were collected at four-hour intervals throughout the day and night in the mating and nonmating seasons. Basal cortisol levels in females were similar in both seasons, but males tended to have higher cortisol levels during the mating season, especially at night. For both sexes, cortisol secretion was highest between 0400 and 0800 preceding the onset of the diurnal activity period. Assessment of cortisol responses following brief handling and anesthesia indicated that stress responses were relatively stable across the year, but cortisol increments were slightly higher in the nonmating season. Cortisol levels post-stress were generally related to prior baseline values. Thus, a knowledge of biorhythmic changes in basal hormone levels was important for predicting hormone levels after acute stressors. Males also underwent marked seasonal variation in their basal testosterone levels, which markedly altered the nature of their testosterone responses 30-minutes poststress. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Platelet-activating factor (1-O-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine) (PAF) is a potent signaling phospholipid which has pleiotropic biological properties in addition to platelet activation. PAF has been detected in the spermatozoa in a number of species. The concentration of PAF is inversely related to human spermatozoal quality. There are no reports on the presence of PAF in nonhuman primate spermatozoa. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to determine if PAF is present in the spermatozoa from the squirrel monkey (which is a seasonal breeder). A second objective was to determine if PAF levels change from the breeding to the nonbreeding season. Endogenous lipids were extracted from mature Bolivian squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) spermatozoa and assayed for the presence of PAF by [125I] radioimmunoassay. PAF was detected in all samples assayed. PAF levels were significantly higher (P< 0.01) during the breeding season (mean: 3.58 ng/106 spermatozoa) than the nonbreeding season (mean: 0.76 ng/106 spermatozoa). The data demonstrate that PAF is present in squirrel monkey spermatozoa, with higher levels found during the breeding season. An old female squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) with a tumor-like growth of the lower jaw died in shock after 2 months of illness. Histological studies of different tissue samples demonstrated that the pathological agent was Cryptococcus. Many mammals coincide their reproductive activities with factors such as ambient temperature, rainfall, and food availability. In primates that invest immediate food intake into reproduction, the periods of maximum fruit production often coincide with the peak of lactation (to maximize maternal survival) or the occurrence of weaning (to maximize infant survival). This study investigates the relationship between reproductive periods and the availability of ripe fruit in the habitat of a population of wild squirrel monkeys (Saimiri collinsi) in Amazonian Brazil. We combine data from several years (2002–2003; 2011–2015) during which we followed the monkeys and quantified the occurrence of matings, gestations, births, and the number of lactating females. We also collected rainfall and plant phenological data for 24 months. Our results confirm that reproductive events are highly seasonal in S. collinsi. The period of weaning corresponded to the peak in the abundance of ripe fruits consumed by the monkeys. This indicates that the period of infant nutritional independence is optimally timed to coincide with periods of greater food production in this habitat. We suggest that seasonal breeding in these primates does not necessarily reduce maternal energetic stress, but likely improves infant survivorship.  相似文献

Squirrel monkeys exchange chuck vocalizations in antiphonal sequences that suggest a request for information, and a response to that request. Chucks are characterized by measurable acoustic differences, notably in peak frequency, related to their position in a sequence. To determine the cues by which animals might identify a chuck that is a request for information from one that is a response, first-in-sequence (α) and second-in-sequence (β) chucks, differing in peak frequency, were recorded from familiar individuals and strangers. These chucks, and a sham control, were played back, in the temporal context of a first-in-sequence call, to a target group of socially housed captive squirrel monkeys. Animals responded more strongly to α chucks than to β chucks for calls originating from familiar individuals. No distinction was made between the α and β chucks of strangers, and all strangers' chucks got a weaker response than did familiar α chucks. Squirrel monkeys probably use acoustic differences, rather than context, to discriminate the ordinal significance of a chuck, but cannot do so unless they are familiar with the caller. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Adult male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were individually chair-restrained in an air-conditioned Styrofoam box in the far field of a horn antenna. Each monkey first received extensive training to regulate the temperature of the air circulating through the box by selecting between 10 and 50 degrees C air source temperatures. Then, to investigate the ability of the animals to utilize microwaves as a source of thermalizing energy, 2450-MHz continuous wave microwaves accompanied by thermoneutral (30 degrees C) air were substituted for the 50 degrees C air. Irradiation at each of three power densities was made available, ie, at 20, 25, and 30 mW/cm2 [SAR = 0.15 (W/kg)/(mW/cm2)]. The percentage of time that the monkeys selected microwave irradiation paired with thermoneutral air averaged 90% at 20 and at 25 mW/cm2. The mean percentage declined reliably (p less than 0.001) to 81% at 30 mW/cm2, confirming the monkey's ability to utilize microwave irradiation as a source of thermal energy during the course of behavioral thermoregulation. All animals readily made the warm-air to microwave-field transition, regulating rectal temperature with precision by sequentially selecting 10 degrees C air, then microwave irradiation accompanied by 30 degrees C air. Although the selection of cooler air resulted in a slight reduction of skin temperatures, normal rectal temperature was maintained. The results indicate that the squirrel monkey can utilize a microwave source in conjunction with convective cooling to regulate body temperature behaviorally.  相似文献

Capacitation and the acrosome reaction in squirrel monkey seminal spermatozoa diluted in Tyrode's medium (TALP) and TC-199 were monitored by a chlortetracycline (CTC) fluorescence assay. Four CTC patterns, similar to those found in human sperm, were readily characterized by fluorescent staining on the heads of the spermatozoa. The appearance of the capacitated (CP) pattern was dependent on the concentration of the bovine serum albumin. Acrosomal loss was observed in a maximum of 15% of the sperm in the populations studied here. Calcium ionophore A23187 (5 μM to 20μM) induced acrosomal loss in 60–70% of capacitated spermatozoa. However in freshly ejaculated sperm incubated under capacitating conditions or in spermatozoa incubated in Ca+ +-free medium, A23187 failed to induce acrosomal loss. Furthermore, spermatozoa incubated in the presence of seminal plasma or spermatozoa obtained following a 1-hour “swim-up” procedure showed an identical timecourse of appearance of the CP pattern, indicating the lack of effect of seminal plasma on capacitation in the squirrel monkey.  相似文献

This study was designed to measure the effects of variations in the length of pretreatment with a GnRH agonist, leuprolide acetate (LA), on subsequent follicular development and ovulation. The hypothesis was that the duration of LA suppression of pituitary function does not adversely affect ovarian response to standardized ovulation induction protocols in squirrel monkeys. The first phase determined the dose and duration of LA needed to achieve a hypogonadal state. One of two groups received daily subcutaneous injections of 50 μg of LA. The other received a single injection of 175 μg of a depot suspension of LA. Sera were assayed for estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P). E2 and P levels increased 2‐ to 5‐fold with peak levels on days 4 and 7, respectively. Suppression of steroid levels took 10 to 15 days in the LA‐treated group. Depot‐LA did not effectively suppress steroid production. After suppression, females receiving daily LA received five daily injections of hMG to stimulate follicular development. E2 and P increased in these animals. These results suggest that cycling squirrel monkeys have P‐secreting capacity throughout the cycle. This may explain how the squirrel monkey is able to accommodate both a short (4–5 day) luteal phase of their 9 day cycle and implantation from 5 to 7 days after ovulation. A second study compared exogenous follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to endogenous gonadotropins released as a response to LA in ovulation induction. Steroid production and hCG‐induced ovulation were assessed. LA treatment was compared to a standard ovulation induction protocol by using a randomized cross‐over measures design. There were no differences in E2 and P levels in response to dosages of either LA or hMG. The ovulatory response following LA treatment was not significantly greater than that using FSH. The number of animals with unovulated, large follicles was greater on the FSH protocol (12/18) compared to the LA protocol (3/18). Thus, a single injection of a depot preparation of LA is sufficient to stimulate follicular development and ovulation when followed by an hCG injection. Based on this observation and the data on unovulated large follicles, it is suggested that the ovary responds more readily to endogenous gonadotropins released by LA than to exogenous FSH. Am. J. Determination of squirrel monkey prolactin by immunoassay has been hampered by the lack of antiserum specific to prolactin from this species. As an alternate method, we have investigated whether the Nb2 lymphoma bioassay could be adapted for routine measurement of the lactogenic activity of samples of squirrel monkey serum. The growth of the Nb2 cells is absolutely dependent on the presence of lactogens in the culture medium. The cells were maintained in Fisher's medium supplemented with 10% horse serum, 10% fetal calf serum (FCS), and 10?4M β-mercaptoethanol. For each assay, the cells were plated at an initial density of 1 × 105 cells/ml in 22-mm 12-well dishes in the above medium, but devoid of FCS. Serum samples were heated to 56°C for 20 minutes to abolish the unusually high cytolytic complement activity of squirrel monkey serum and were incubated for 72 hours with Nb2 cells at serial dilutions from 1/40 to 1/2,560. Growth curves were generated with pooled samples of squirrel monkey serum, and the level of lactogenic activity was estimated using a calibration growth curve generated with known concentrations of purified rhesus monkey prolactin standard. We have found that the Nb2 lymphoma bioassay provides a sensitive and adaptable means for determination of lactogenic activity in the serum of the squirrel monkey.  相似文献

Twenty early pregnancies were diagnosed and monitored in vervet monkeys by ultrasonography. Non-gravid uteri became increasingly echogenic from cycle days 7 to 26. The first definite sign of pregnancy was a gestational cavity of 2 mm (+/- 0.80) at 33.0 (+/- 1.48) days menstrual age, which was also used to date all subsequent features. Earlier signs, such as an endometrial line swelling or endometrial 'pregnancy' ring, as reported for other non-human primate species, could not be reliably and consistently used to diagnose pregnancy in vervet monkeys. A rapid increase of the gestational cavity size from days 37 to 49 corresponded closely to a rapid increase in plasma progesterone concentration from day 39 to 49. The first yolk sac was recognizable at 38.0 days (+/- 3.10) and measured 3.3 mm (+/- 0.40) in diameter. A heart beat could be detected at 45.5 (+/- 1.73) days and the size of the first measurable embryo at 35 days was 2 mm. The dating of most features was within the range reported for other non-human primate species.  相似文献

The survival, growth, gonadal development and sex ratios of gynogenetic diploid turbot Scophthalmus maximus between 9 and 36 months of age were investigated. Gynogenesis was induced by activation of freshly collected eggs with diluted (1 : 10 with Ringer) and UV‐irradiated (30000 erg mm−2) sperm, followed by a cold shock at −1 to 0° C for 25 min, starting at 6·5 min after fertilization. The exclusive maternal inheritance of the resulting gynogenetic diploids was confirmed in all individuals used in the experiment by microsatellite markers. Mean total length and mass throughout the experiment was higher in the controls than in the gynogenetics. The gonadal development in gynogenetic males proceeded normally, and in gynogenetic females it was delayed during the first sexual maturation but was normal during the second one. The sex ratio was 1 male (M) : 1 female (F) in the controls, as expected, but 1 M : 3 F in the gynogenetics. In a second, independent experiment, carried out with fish originating from different broodstock, however, the sex ratio was 1 M : 1 F in the controls and 0 M : 1 F ( i.e . 100% females) in the gynogenetics. Together, these results suggested that the main sex‐determining genetic component in turbot fits well to female homogamety, in accordance with data from other flatfishes. These results indicate that it will be possible to obtain near or all‐female turbot stocks through induced gynogenesis or by crosses involving hormonally sex‐reversed fish.  相似文献

The goal of the present investigation was to determine in the squirrel monkey the source and pattern of inhibin, a hormone known to effect reproductive steroid levels via pituitary and ovarian mechanisms. Since this seasonally polyestrous species is known to have elevated serum levels of reproductive steroids compared to other primates, the levels of ovarian alpha subunit mRNA expression and serum total alpha inhibin, estradiol, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone were measured and compared to human levels. Expression of the alpha subunit was robust in monkey luteal tissue compared to expression in human luteal tissue. Squirrel monkey serum inhibin peaked 4 days after the luteinizing hormone surge and correlated with progesterone changes. These luteal serum levels of inhibin were greater than 12 times higher than the human levels yet bio‐LH activities were less than in the human during the luteal phase. Inhibin concentrations during the non‐breeding season were generally half the levels measured in the breeding season and undetectable in ovariectomized animals. However, exogenous FSH stimulation induced a marked rise in inhibin, which correlated with an estradiol rise. In conclusion, abundant alpha inhibin subunit expression in the luteal ovary of the squirrel monkey and loss of serum delectability in ovariectomized animals indicates that the principle source of inhibin in the squirrel monkey is the ovary. Elevated serum inhibin levels during the luteal phase concurrent with ovulatory‐size follicular development is unique among species studied thus far. Possible simultaneous inhibin production from both follicular and luteal tissue may be responsible for the exceptionally high inhibin levels. Am. J. Abstract.  1. In horned beetles selection favours males that adjust their investment in horn development in relation to cues that predict adult body size. Here it is shown that in the Japanese horned beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma . There is a significant discontinuity in the horn length body size allometry. This can be described as a linear relationship that is shifted towards an increased horn length to body length ratio in males with horns longer than 16 mm.
2. Larval nutrition explains morph determination in A. dichotoma . However, unlike other species, variation in larval nutrition was the result of a seasonal time constraint that limits the time available for feeding prior to the onset of winter diapause.
3. Even when eggs were reared with an ad libitum food supply, minor morphs were still observed. Individuals that were oviposited later in the season had less time to feed, shorter development times, eclosed as smaller individuals and, in the case of males, were more likely to be hornless. Major morphs, minor morphs, and females all reduced their body size in response to seasonal time constraints in the same way. However, males that were laid later in the season had faster development times than females laid at the same time, but showed no reduction in their size relative to females, suggesting seasonal time constraints increase growth rates in males but not in females.
4. No evidence was found that seasonal time constraints resulted in a reduction of size-corrected fat reserves at eclosion, or that minor morphs gained any developmental advantage by reducing investment in horn length.  相似文献

The effect of social context on experimental foraging in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) was investigated. The 12 subjects comprised six pairs in which strong social preference and attraction had been demonstrated during observations of a stable group. Individuals were first trained to discriminate spatially separated rich and poor foraging bins containing 75% and 25% of the food items, respectively, with their partners restrained equidistant from the two bins. The monkeys invested an average of 75.5% of their foraging time in the rich bin. Each individual was then tested with its partner restrained in different locations relative to the bins to determine the effect of partner proximity on foraging patterns. Foraging efficiency at the start of a session was enhanced when the partner was restrained adjacent to the rich bin compared to restraint away from this bin. Over an entire foraging session, however, all conditions providing partner accessibility were similar in yielding enhanced foraging efficiency compared to partner absence. Little time was spent in close physical proximity to the partner under any condition. It is suggested that accessibility of the social partner, rather than close physical proximity, has an important influence on the foraging squirrel monkey. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to (1) assess year-round behaviors and activity patterns of captive raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and (2) characterize the species' reproductive endocrinology. Behaviors and activity patterns of 12 (5.7) animals were recorded over a 1-year period. During that time, fecal samples were collected 2-7 times/week from 16 (7.9) individuals (six of these were included in the behavioral study) for the analysis of testosterone, progesterone and estrogen metabolite concentrations. Activity pattern and excretion of gonadal steroids followed a seasonal pattern. Specifically, dogs were cathemeral in summer, and primarily nocturnal in winter. In the males, testosterone concentrations were at baseline from April through September, began to rise in October and reached peak concentrations in February (P<0.05). In the females, elevated estrogen (P<0.05) was observed in March followed by an increase in progestagen concentrations from March through May (P<0.05) in both pregnant and pseudopregnant animals. Gender significantly influenced monthly testosterone/estrogen ratio (P<0.01); values were higher in males than in females throughout the year with overall percentage of overlapping values between males and females being 28%. In summary, this study characterized cirannual fluctuations in behaviors and gonadal steroid metabolites in the raccoon dog maintained in captivity. Because there is no obvious sexual dimorphism, the differences in testosterone/estrogen ratio may be useful for gender differentiation (72% accuracy), especially among individuals living in the wild.  相似文献
