Diurnal changes in basal cortisol levels and stress reactivity were assessed in male and female squirrel monkeys. Blood samples were collected at four-hour intervals throughout the day and night in the mating and nonmating seasons. Basal cortisol levels in females were similar in both seasons, but males tended to have higher cortisol levels during the mating season, especially at night. For both sexes, cortisol secretion was highest between 0400 and 0800 preceding the onset of the diurnal activity period. Assessment of cortisol responses following brief handling and anesthesia indicated that stress responses were relatively stable across the year, but cortisol increments were slightly higher in the nonmating season. Cortisol levels post-stress were generally related to prior baseline values. Thus, a knowledge of biorhythmic changes in basal hormone levels was important for predicting hormone levels after acute stressors. Males also underwent marked seasonal variation in their basal testosterone levels, which markedly altered the nature of their testosterone responses 30-minutes poststress. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Squirrel monkeys exchange chuck vocalizations in antiphonal sequences that suggest a request for information, and a response to that request. Chucks are characterized by measurable acoustic differences, notably in peak frequency, related to their position in a sequence. To determine the cues by which animals might identify a chuck that is a request for information from one that is a response, first-in-sequence (α) and second-in-sequence (β) chucks, differing in peak frequency, were recorded from familiar individuals and strangers. These chucks, and a sham control, were played back, in the temporal context of a first-in-sequence call, to a target group of socially housed captive squirrel monkeys. Animals responded more strongly to α chucks than to β chucks for calls originating from familiar individuals. No distinction was made between the α and β chucks of strangers, and all strangers' chucks got a weaker response than did familiar α chucks. Squirrel monkeys probably use acoustic differences, rather than context, to discriminate the ordinal significance of a chuck, but cannot do so unless they are familiar with the caller. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Adult male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were individually chair-restrained in an air-conditioned Styrofoam box in the far field of a horn antenna. Each monkey first received extensive training to regulate the temperature of the air circulating through the box by selecting between 10 and 50 degrees C air source temperatures. Then, to investigate the ability of the animals to utilize microwaves as a source of thermalizing energy, 2450-MHz continuous wave microwaves accompanied by thermoneutral (30 degrees C) air were substituted for the 50 degrees C air. Irradiation at each of three power densities was made available, ie, at 20, 25, and 30 mW/cm2 [SAR = 0.15 (W/kg)/(mW/cm2)]. The percentage of time that the monkeys selected microwave irradiation paired with thermoneutral air averaged 90% at 20 and at 25 mW/cm2. The mean percentage declined reliably (p less than 0.001) to 81% at 30 mW/cm2, confirming the monkey's ability to utilize microwave irradiation as a source of thermal energy during the course of behavioral thermoregulation. All animals readily made the warm-air to microwave-field transition, regulating rectal temperature with precision by sequentially selecting 10 degrees C air, then microwave irradiation accompanied by 30 degrees C air. Although the selection of cooler air resulted in a slight reduction of skin temperatures, normal rectal temperature was maintained. The results indicate that the squirrel monkey can utilize a microwave source in conjunction with convective cooling to regulate body temperature behaviorally.  相似文献

Capacitation and the acrosome reaction in squirrel monkey seminal spermatozoa diluted in Tyrode's medium (TALP) and TC-199 were monitored by a chlortetracycline (CTC) fluorescence assay. Four CTC patterns, similar to those found in human sperm, were readily characterized by fluorescent staining on the heads of the spermatozoa. The appearance of the capacitated (CP) pattern was dependent on the concentration of the bovine serum albumin. Acrosomal loss was observed in a maximum of 15% of the sperm in the populations studied here. Calcium ionophore A23187 (5 μM to 20μM) induced acrosomal loss in 60–70% of capacitated spermatozoa. However in freshly ejaculated sperm incubated under capacitating conditions or in spermatozoa incubated in Ca+ +-free medium, A23187 failed to induce acrosomal loss. Furthermore, spermatozoa incubated in the presence of seminal plasma or spermatozoa obtained following a 1-hour “swim-up” procedure showed an identical timecourse of appearance of the CP pattern, indicating the lack of effect of seminal plasma on capacitation in the squirrel monkey.  相似文献

Determination of squirrel monkey prolactin by immunoassay has been hampered by the lack of antiserum specific to prolactin from this species. As an alternate method, we have investigated whether the Nb2 lymphoma bioassay could be adapted for routine measurement of the lactogenic activity of samples of squirrel monkey serum. The growth of the Nb2 cells is absolutely dependent on the presence of lactogens in the culture medium. The cells were maintained in Fisher's medium supplemented with 10% horse serum, 10% fetal calf serum (FCS), and 10?4M β-mercaptoethanol. For each assay, the cells were plated at an initial density of 1 × 105 cells/ml in 22-mm 12-well dishes in the above medium, but devoid of FCS. Serum samples were heated to 56°C for 20 minutes to abolish the unusually high cytolytic complement activity of squirrel monkey serum and were incubated for 72 hours with Nb2 cells at serial dilutions from 1/40 to 1/2,560. Growth curves were generated with pooled samples of squirrel monkey serum, and the level of lactogenic activity was estimated using a calibration growth curve generated with known concentrations of purified rhesus monkey prolactin standard. We have found that the Nb2 lymphoma bioassay provides a sensitive and adaptable means for determination of lactogenic activity in the serum of the squirrel monkey.  相似文献

Twenty early pregnancies were diagnosed and monitored in vervet monkeys by ultrasonography. Non-gravid uteri became increasingly echogenic from cycle days 7 to 26. The first definite sign of pregnancy was a gestational cavity of 2 mm (+/- 0.80) at 33.0 (+/- 1.48) days menstrual age, which was also used to date all subsequent features. Earlier signs, such as an endometrial line swelling or endometrial 'pregnancy' ring, as reported for other non-human primate species, could not be reliably and consistently used to diagnose pregnancy in vervet monkeys. A rapid increase of the gestational cavity size from days 37 to 49 corresponded closely to a rapid increase in plasma progesterone concentration from day 39 to 49. The first yolk sac was recognizable at 38.0 days (+/- 3.10) and measured 3.3 mm (+/- 0.40) in diameter. A heart beat could be detected at 45.5 (+/- 1.73) days and the size of the first measurable embryo at 35 days was 2 mm. The dating of most features was within the range reported for other non-human primate species.  相似文献

The effect of social context on experimental foraging in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) was investigated. The 12 subjects comprised six pairs in which strong social preference and attraction had been demonstrated during observations of a stable group. Individuals were first trained to discriminate spatially separated rich and poor foraging bins containing 75% and 25% of the food items, respectively, with their partners restrained equidistant from the two bins. The monkeys invested an average of 75.5% of their foraging time in the rich bin. Each individual was then tested with its partner restrained in different locations relative to the bins to determine the effect of partner proximity on foraging patterns. Foraging efficiency at the start of a session was enhanced when the partner was restrained adjacent to the rich bin compared to restraint away from this bin. Over an entire foraging session, however, all conditions providing partner accessibility were similar in yielding enhanced foraging efficiency compared to partner absence. Little time was spent in close physical proximity to the partner under any condition. It is suggested that accessibility of the social partner, rather than close physical proximity, has an important influence on the foraging squirrel monkey. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This paper deals with the functioning and malfunctioning of maternal behavior in relation to external and social conditions. During developmental studies in captive squirrel monkey groups, 49 mother-infant pairs were observed. There were several cases of maternal inadequacy subsequent to (1) postnatal transportation, (2) exaggerated social investigation by immatures,and (3) premature allomothering. Brief mother-infant separations by humans did not yield such failures. One female consistently prevented nursing with at least three of her five viable offspring. Complete or partial failure of maternal behavior did not preclude subsequent recovery and/or adequate allomothering. Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Med. Several media, some augmented with amino acids, have been formulated recently, based on simplex optimization, to support the preimplantation development of mouse embryos. For the highly limited studies on preimplantation development of nonhuman primate embryos, a complex medium (CMRL-1066) has been employed. Our objective was to compare the developmental ability of rhesus monkey embryos in a simple medium containing amino acids, KSOM/AA, with the complex media used previously. Zygotes (99) were recovered following in vitro fertilization (IVF) from six monkeys, allocated to either CMRL or KSOM/AA both containing 10% fetal calf serum (FCS), and monitored daily until reaching the expanded or hatched blastocyst stage. The distribution of cells between the inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm was determined at the end of culture by differential nuclear staining. Although a greater number of embryos cultured in KSOM/AA vs. CMRL developed to the morula stage (80%) and beyond (66% to expanded blastocyst), the differences were not significant. Such embryos in KSOM/AA did, however, develop at a significantly faster rate, on average, reaching the expanded blastocyst stage 26 hr earlier than did embryos cultured in CMRL. KSOM/AA embryos hatched in less time and had a higher percentage (43 vs. 34) of cells allocated to the ICM. These results indicate that a simple medium, KSOM/AA, in the presence of serum, supports the development of rhesus monkey embryos at high efficiency and at a faster rate than that observed for embryos cultured in the complex medium, CMRL-1066. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The lobular division, bronchial tree, and blood vessels in lungs of seven squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were examined from the viewpoint of comparative anatomy. The right lung of the squirrel monkey consists of the upper, middle, lower, and accessory lobes, whereas the left lung consists of the upper, middle, and lower lobes. These lobes are completely separated by interlobular fissures. In three of seven examples examined the left middle lobe was lacking. The squirrel monkey lung has four bronchiole systems, i.e. dorsal, lateral, ventral, and medial, on both sides. The upper lobes are formed by the first branches of the dorsal bronchiole systems. The middle lobes are formed by the first branches of the lateral bronchiole systems. The remaining bronchioles constitute the lower lobes. In addition to the above lobes, in the right lung, the accessory lobe is present, being formed by the first branch of the ventral bronchiole system. The right pulmonary artery runs across the ventral side of the right upper lobe bronchiole, and then across the dorsal side of the right middle lobe bronchiole. Thereafter, it runs between the dorsal bronchiole and lateral bronchiole systems along the dorso-lateral side of the right bronchus. During its course, the right pulmonary artery gives off the arterial branches which run along each bronchiole. These branches run mainly along the dorsal or lateral side of the bronchioles. In the left lung, the pulmonary artery and its branches run the same course as in the right lung. The pulmonary veins run mainly the ventral or medial side of the bronchioles, and between the bronchioles.  相似文献

Abnormally enlarged muscle fiber cells of ring form were incidentally detected in transverse sections of muscles of the common squirrel monkey during microscopic investigation of the composition of muscle fibers. Longitudinal sections showed slender capsule-like cysts in the sarcoplasm. Detailed examination revealed these cysts to be those ofSarcocystis. Among the three types of muscle fiber cells that compose the skeletal muscle, staining with Sudan black B revealed that this parasite selectively infested type II white fibers with a large diameter and a high glycogen content.  相似文献

An in vitro fertilization system utilizing squirrel monkeys was used to compare follicle-stimulating hormone, clomiphene citrate and prostaglandin E1 as follicular induction regimens, analyze culture medium characteristics, and examine the physiological phenomenon of polyspermy. Induction of follicular growth was poor with clomiphene citrate when compared to the control group and increased the incidence of atretic follicles at all levels tested. When prostaglandin E1 was administered, larger numbers of mature oocytes were recovered at laparoscopy. There was no difference in fertilization rate between the treatment and control groups. Homologous serum was an adequate protein source in TC-199 fertilization medium for squirrel monkey oocytes. Although the rate of triploidy was increased with in vitro fertilization, there was no relationship between sperm concentration and the incidence of polyspermy. These findings demonstrate that the squirrel monkey is a valuable primate system for studies of in vitro fertilization and preimplantation development. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The metabolic shift in cholinesterase activity and inhibitor of hypothalamus pituitary gonadal hormones were hypothesized as resultant effect of Parkinson's disease (PD) which is clinically characterized by a movement disorder. This study therefore examined the effect of turmeric curcumin (CUR) on index of PD, acetylcholine esterase activity and disorder of hypothalamus pituitary gonadal hormone (HPGH) in Bisphenol-A induced injury using animal model. Forty adult male albino rats were randomly distributed into five (n = 8) groups. Group I: vehicle control (olive oil 0.5 ml), Group II was given 50 mg/kg of BPA only, Group III was given 50 mg/kg BPA + 50 mg/kg curcumin, Group IV was given 50 mg/kg BPA + 100 mg/kg curcumin and Group V was administered 50 mg/kg of curcumin only for 14 days. The study examined the effect of curcumin on acetylcholineesterase (AChE) activity, nitric oxide radical (NO?) production, HPGH (LH, FSH and testosterone), MDA level, antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT), in BPA induced male rat. Sperm parameters were similarly examined. The animals induced with BPA exhibited impairment to striatum, leydig cells and sertoli cells by depleting LH, FSH, testosterone and spermatozoa with reduced AChE activity and significant (p < 0.05) alteration in cerebral enzymatic antioxidants. Locomotive activity was impeded followed by the increase of brain NO? level (marker of pro-inflammation). Therapeutically, CUR promoted hypothalamus–pituitary–testicular hormones via modulation of AChE and locomotive activities, reduction of intracellular NO? level, prevention of striatum-endocrine injury as well as oxidative damage. Hence, CUR abolished HPGH dysfunction linked with PD mediated by BPA in rat.  相似文献

The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been implicated as the causative agent of mass mortalities, population declines and the extinctions of amphibian species worldwide. Although several studies have shown that the prevalence of chytridiomycosis (the disease caused by the fungus) increases in cooler months, the magnitude and timing of these seasonal fluctuations have yet to be accurately quantified. We conducted disease sampling in a single population of stony creek frogs Litoria wilcoxii on 13 occasions over a 21-month period and used quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to detect and quantify the number of B. dendrobatidis zoospores present on samples. Disease prevalence varied significantly across sampling sessions, peaking at 58.3% (in early spring) and dropping to as low as 0% on two occasions (late summer and early autumn). There was a significant negative relationship between disease prevalence and mean air temperature in the 30 days prior to sampling. These large-scale seasonal fluctuations in chytridiomycosis levels will strongly influence conservation programs and amphibian disease research.  相似文献

Typical patterns of seasonal variation in body weight among Japanese children involve increases during the fall and/or winter and decreases during the summer. However, atypical variations, namely, increases in weight during the summer, have been reported for obese children. The present study examines whether weight gain during the summer (i.e., July through September) is a possible cause of obesity. We examined seasonal changes in weight for 446 elementary school children in Tokyo in six waves between 1972 and 2004. Weight was measured monthly for 6 years in each child and was evaluated by means of time-series analysis. Overall, significant seasonal variations in weight were found in 86% of the children, most of which were typical (i.e., decreases during the summer and increases during the fall, winter, and/or early spring). On the other hand, weight gain in the summer was observed exclusively among obese children. Children whose weight increased during the summer holiday spent most of their time comfortably indoors because of air conditioners, which became popular in 1970s. A possible explanation of the observed weight gain during the summer seems to be changes in life style associated with the use of air conditioning, concomitant with insufficient physical exercise and excessive consumption of food and drink, which could disturb the rhythms of seasonal weight changes and lead to obesity.  相似文献

Pregnant squirrel monkeys were exposed to 2450-MHz (CW) microwaves at an equivalent power density of 10 mW/cm2 (SAR 3.4 mW/g) for three hours daily in a cavity-cage module. The exposure began when pregnancy was determined by a hormonal method, and continued through the offspring's first 9.5 months. After irradiation, the brains of the offspring were fixed with formaldehyde, and the inferior vermis of each cerebella was removed and processed for histologic observations. Purkinje cell density in the uvula was determined in sagittal serial sections. There was no significant difference between control and experimental animals in the number of Purkinje cells per mm of Purkinje cell line (linear density), as well as in the density of Purkinje cells in the Purkinje cell layer.  相似文献

Serial measurements of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) were used to describe the ovarian cycle of the Bolivian squirrel monkey. Group-caged, sexually mature female squirrel monkeys, housed with males, were sampled daily between 0900 and 1100 hr. Sampling was carried out during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons, for periods of 19–20 days from September 1981 to May 1982. Seasonal differences in serum concentrations of E2 and P were found with low levels of E2 and P and an absence of preovulatory surges of E2 during the nonbreeding season. This pattern was also observed in some animals during the breeding season. An abrupt increase in serum P concentrations in December appeared to signal the onset of cycling. Cycling animals had well-defined peaks of E2 (450–9,500 pg/ml) followed by increasing levels of P, which were >200 ng/ml in some animals. After the breeding season, E2 and P levels returned to their initially low levels. Levels of both steroids in cycling animals were higher than those reported for other primates and for previous measurements made in squirrel monkeys. Cycle length based on time interval between consecutive E2 peaks varied from 6–12 days.  相似文献

Squirrel monkeys, colony-born from Bolivian parents, were studied to establish the sequences and timing of eruption for deciduous and permanent teeth. Infants were born with a naked gingiva, and in only one monkey was di1 present at birth. The eruption of the lower deciduous teeth preceded their upper counterparts with the exception of di2, dc, and dpm2. No significant differences were found between the right and left quadrants of the mandible and maxilla. No significant sexual differences were found in the age of eruption. By the age of 14 weeks, all deciduous teeth had erupted. The sequence of eruption of the replacement teeth was different from that of milk teeth. The differences lie in the delayed eruption of canine teeth and in the inverted sequence, from the back to the front, of the premolar series. Significant sexual differences were found in total eruption (TE) for PM3 and I2 (P < 0.05) and highly significant differences (P < 0.01) in TE and initial eruption (IE) for C1, females being more precocious than males. The age at which monkeys completed dental eruption was highly variable, 103–119 weeks for males and 89–112 weeks for females. Differences were found when our results were compared with those of Long and Cooper [1968] for Colombian squirrel monkeys.  相似文献
