In order to standardise biological assessment of surface waters in Europe, a standardised method for sampling, sorting and
identification of benthic macroinvertebrates in running waters was developed during the AQEM project. The AQEM method has
proved to be relatively time-consuming. Hence, this study explored the consequences of a reduction in sample size on costs
and bioassessment results. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from six different streams: four streams located in the
Netherlands and two in Slovakia. In each stream 20 sampling units were collected with a pond net (25×25 cm), over a length
of approximately 25 cm per sampling unit, from one or two habitats dominantly present. With the collected data, the effect
of increasing sample size on variability and accuracy was examined for six metrics and a multimetric index developed for the
assessment of Dutch slow running streams. By collecting samples from separate habitats it was possible to examine whether
the coefficient of variation (CV; measure of variability) and the mean relative deviation from the “reference” sample (MRD;
measure of accuracy) for different metrics depended only on sample size, or also on the type of habitat sampled. Time spent
on sample processing (sorting and identification) was recorded for samples from the Dutch streams to assess the implications
of changes in sample size on the costs of sample processing. Accuracy of metric results increased and variability decreased
with increasing sample size. Accuracy and variability varied depending on the habitat and the metric, hence sample size should
be based on the specific habitats present in a stream and the metric(s) used for bioassessment. The AQEM sampling method prescribes
a multihabitat sample of 5 m. Our results suggest that a sample size of less than 5 m is adequate to attain a CV and MRD of
≤ 10% for the metrics ASPT (Average Score per Taxon), Saprobic Index and type Aka+Lit+Psa (%) (the percentage of individuals
with a preference for the akal, littoral and psammal). The metrics number of taxa, number of individuals and EPT-taxa (%)
required a multihabitat sample size of more than 5 m to attain a CV and MRD of ≤ 10%. For the metrics number of individuals
and number of taxa a multihabitat sample size of 5 m is not even adequate to attain a CV and MRD of ≤ 20%. Accuracy of the
multimetric index for Dutch slow running streams can be increased from ≤ 20 to ≤ 10% with an increase in labour time of 2 h.
Considering this low increase in costs and the possible implications of incorrect assessment results it is recommended to
strive for this ≤ 10% accuracy. To achieve an accuracy of ≤ 10% a multihabitat sample of the four habitats studied in the
Netherlands would require a sample size of 2.5 m and a labour time of 26 h (excluding identification of Oligochaeta and Diptera)
or 38 h (including identification of Oligochaeta and Diptera).

The water and habitat quality in Panamanian streams and rivers are being degraded by agriculture, urbanization, industrial activities, mining, and other forms of development. Thus, the need for standards, especially those examining the biological attributes of lotic systems, are urgently required. We describe the development of a multimetric index based on macroinvertebrates collected in low-land streams in the Panama Canal Watershed (PCW), which differed in their levels of human impacts. The index was developed using 12 streams and validated using a further three, all of which were sampled on four occasions, in the dry and wet seasons of 2007 and 2008. We examined 42 metrics related to macroinvertebrate community structure, composition, and function. Based on their ability to distinguish reference from moderately or severely impacted streams, and on their independence, we selected seven metrics (Margalef's index (taxa), Shannon's evenness index (taxa), number of EPT (taxa), % of Trichoptera, ratio of Chironomidae/Diptera individuals, % of scrapers, and % of shredders). These metrics were then standardized and developed into the Neotropical Low-land Stream Multimetric Index (NLSMI). Overall, the NLSMI distinguished well among the different levels of impairment (Reference, Moderate impact, and Severe impact) and showed a strong, significant correlation with principal component analysis (PCA) axis one values, with the PCA based on a set of physico-chemical variables indicative of stream quality. The wet season generally resulted in lower NLSMI values, leading us to suggest that sampling for biomonitoring be carried out in the dry season. Overall, this preliminary macroinvertebrate NLSMI shows promise for developing a biomonitoring programme to assess the ecological integrity of streams, to aid with management, restoration, and conservation, and to serve as a basis to develop a more geographically extensive multimetric index. 相似文献

Assessing the ecological impacts of anthropogenic pressures is a key task in environmental management. Multimetric indices (MMIs), based on aquatic assemblage responses to anthropogenic pressures, have been used increasingly throughout the world. The MMI approach is a low-cost, rapid field method that produces an aquatic condition index that responds precisely to anthropogenic pressures, making it useful for conservation and environmental management. We developed four candidate MMIs based on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages sampled at 40 randomly selected sites to assess the environmental condition of streams upstream of a hydroelectric power plant in the Brazilian Neotropical Savanna biome. Those MMIs were built from landscape-adjusted and unadjusted biological metrics as well as two alternative ways of choosing metrics. The alternative MMIs performances were tested by comparing their precision to distinguish least-disturbed areas, responsiveness to discriminate least- and most-disturbed areas, and sensitivity to anthropogenic pressures at catchment and local scales. The best performing MMI had landscape-adjusted metrics and was produced through use of principal component analysis for metric selection. It included 4 metrics: Ephemeroptera richness, average tolerance score per taxon, percentage of predator individuals, and percentage of Odonata individuals adjusted by elevation. This index discriminated well the anthropogenic pressures at local- and catchment-scales, and at both scales simultaneously, as indicated by an integrated disturbance index. Our methodological development included statistical criteria for identifying least- and most-disturbed sites, calibrating for natural landscape variability, and use of non-redundant metrics. Seasonal variability of macroinvertebrate assemblages was examined in two regions of South Africa: Western Cape and Mpumalanga. Sampling was undertaken at reference sites using the rapid bioassessment method SASS4 (South African Scoring System, Version 4). This study examined the influence of sampling season on the occurrence of taxa, macroinvertebrate assemblages and SASS scores. In the Western Cape a few taxa were more common at certain times of the year, and multivariate analysis of macroinvertebrate assemblages showed that assemblages grouped by season. The number of taxa and the Average Score per Taxon (ASPT) were significantly different among seasons in the Western Cape, with fewer taxa recorded in winter compared to summer, and significantly higher ASPT values recorded in winter and spring than summer and autumn. Whereas more taxa were recorded in autumn than in spring, a higher proportion of sensitive and high-scoring taxa were recorded in spring. In Mpumalanga macroinvertebrate assemblages did not group by season, and differences in SASS scores were not significant, although more taxa were recorded in winter than in spring or autumn, and ASPTs were slightly higher in winter than in spring. Results are discussed in relation to ecological reference conditions and the interpretation of bioassessment data. 相似文献

Longitudinal distribution and abundance of macroinvertebrate communities were examined in relation to hydrochemical variables
along the Chubut River in the Patagonian Precordillera and Plateau, Argentina. The Chubut River (>1000 km) is the largest
river in the area and its basin is subject to multiple uses: agriculture, cattle raising, urbanization and the hydrological
regime of the lower section is modified by a reservoir. Quantitative benthic samples were collected at 13 sites in the higher,
middle and lower sections of the river basin. Sites were visited four times during 2004 and physicochemical parameters, chlorophyll
a and particulate organic matter (POM) were assessed. Ninety-five taxa were collected in the study, with total species richness
per site ranging from 5 to 51, and benthos density averaging 299–5024 ind m−2. Altitude and turbidity were implicated as important factors determining macroinvertebrate assemblages along the river system,
and an eutrophication gradient was documented in the regulated/urbanized section of the main river. High turbidity (TSS) and
sedimentation limited algal productivity in the middle basin. Below the dam, TSS, total phosphorus (TP) and POM decreased,
whereas soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and chlorophyll a increased. Macroinvertebrate density increased three fold in this area possibly due to habitat improvement and enhanced trophic
resources. Mean species richness did not change below the impoundment; however the community was dominated by gastropods,
chironomids and flatworms. The Chubut River is complex and its biotic community reflects the landscape attributes. While benthic
composition and density was governed by turbidity and flood disturbance in some river segments, a greater environmental heterogeneity
resulted in an unexpected high number of species at the main channel upper basin. 相似文献

An extensive survey of tropical rivers, conducted during 2009–2012 throughout Zambia, collected 151 samples of benthic macroinvertebrates, located on 95 rivers in six of the nine freshwater ecoregions. Associated data for physico-chemistry, human activities and ecosystem stressors were collected. Data were used to develop and test a new Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (the Zambian Invertebrate Scoring System: ZISS) for assessment of water quality and river condition in both wadeable and non-wadeable rivers. ZISS, which is based on the South African Scoring System (SASS), includes a total of 85 taxa, of which 79 are shared with SASS. Assignment of sensitivity weightings to new ZISS taxa was based on sensitivity weightings of closely related SASS families; known life-history modes and anatomical adaptations; and correlation of occurrence to impact ratings. The ability of the ZISS to measure impacts was assessed by determining the relationships between ZISS metrics and impacts. ZISS data for the Kafue River demonstrated the efficacy of the ZISS for detecting moderate to high impacts on water quality and river condition. ZISS represents a major step in developing a user-friendly, widely applicable, macroinvertebrate-based biotic index, which can provide easily interpretable assessments of river condition for southern tropical African rivers. 相似文献

Covarying patterns of macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages along natural and human activity gradients: implications for bioassessment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bioassessment is based upon the premise that biological assemblages have predictable relationships with the surrounding natural
and human environments. As the nature of these relationships can vary from region to region, it is important that environment–biota
relationships be established prior to the initiation of any bioassessment program. In this study, multivariate analysis was
used to establish how fish and benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) assemblages in southwestern Ontario streams vary across natural
and human activity gradients. The use of canonical correspondence analysis allowed us to determine that changes in community
composition of both fish and BMI are strongly correlated with variation in the extent of human activity. The primary source
of variation in community composition across activity gradients appeared to reflect a shift from intolerant to tolerant taxa
as the extent of human activity increased. Habitat and feeding traits, for BMI and fish respectively, accounted for a secondary
source of variation primarily attributable to differences in the extent of human activity at the reach scale. However, variation
in human activity, especially at the basin scale, covaried with the dominant natural gradient of surface geology, making interpretation
of the results difficult. Implications for bioassessment studies are discussed. 相似文献

Macroinvertebrate biotope preferences and the influence of differences in the availability of biotopes on individual taxa, macroinvertebrate assemblages and a biotic index, the South African Scoring System (SASS), were investigated in two regions of South Africa. 2. Among biotope differences in individual taxa and macroinvertebrate assemblages resulted in differences in SASS scores, with differences in assemblages being greater among biotopes than between sites. 3. All three metrics studied (SASS score, number of taxa and average score per taxon, ASPT), differed significantly among biotopes, with highest scores consistently recorded in the stones biotope, while lowest SASS scores and fewest taxa were recorded in the sand biotope. 4. SASS score and number of taxa were positively, while ASPT was negatively correlated with number of biotopes sampled. 5. The observed biotope differences highlight the importance of sampling and comparing data from sites separately for each biotope. 相似文献

Production of benthic macroinvertebrate communities along a southern Appalachian river continuum 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
1. Annual production was estimated for macroinvertebrate communities of principle habitats along a first- to seventh-order river continuum in the southern Appalachian Mountains (U.S.A.). Annual production was relatively low in depositional habitats, pebble/gravel substrata, and on cobble devoid of plant biomass (mosses and hydrophytes). Production was greater in bedrock habitats and greatest on hydrophyte-covered cobble, with estimates reaching 364 g AFDM (ash-free dry mass)m–2 yr–1 in a sixth-order river reach. Annual production in depositional habitats was correlated to standing crops of benthic organic material (BOM) in low-order stream reaches but not in higher-order reaches, indicating differences in BOM availability with stream size. In cobble, pebble/gravel and bedrock habitats production was significantly correlated to standing crops of aquatic plants, which can stabilize substrata and enhance access of collector-filtering invertebrates to entrained food resources. 2. By accounting for proportional availability of habitats along the continuum, estimates of total production ranged from 5 to 154 g AFDM m–2 yr–1, and increased significantly with stream size. Annual production estimated for sixth- and seventh-order reaches of the continuum were amongst the highest reported thus far for lotic systems. Organization of the benthic community along the continuum, based on production estimates for individual functional feeding-groups, generally supported predictions of the River Continuum Concept (RCC): shredder contributions were greatest in low-order reaches and declined downstream; scraper percentages were greatest in the middle of the continuum; collector-filterer contributions increased with increasing stream size. Longitudinal trends for collector-gatherers and predators did not support RCC predictions; these groups appeared to be influenced by localized changes in habitat availability and occurrence of vertebrate predators along the continuum. 相似文献

RIVPACS models produce a community-level measure of biological condition known as O/E, which is derived from a comparison of the observed (O) biota with those expected (E) to occur in the absence of anthropogenic stress. We used benthic macroinvertebrate and environmental data collected at 925 stream monitoring stations, from 1993 to 2001, to develop, validate, and apply a RIVPACS model to assess the biological condition of wadeable streams in Wyoming. From this dataset, 296 samples were identified as reference, 157 of which were used to calibrate the model, 46 to validate it, and 93 to examine temporal variability in reference site O/E-values. We used cluster analyses to group the model development reference sites into biologically similar classes of streams and multiple discriminant function analysis to determine which environmental variables best discriminated among reference groups. A suite of 14 categorical and continuous environmental variables best discriminated among 15 reference groups and explained a large proportion of the natural variability in biota within the reference dataset. Eleven of the predictor variables were derived from GIS. As expected, mean O/E-values for reference sites used in model development and validation were near unity and statistically similar. Temporal variability in O/E-values for reference sites was low. Test site values ranged from 0 to 1.45 (mean = 0.73). The model was accurate in both space and time and precise enough (S.D. of O/E-values for calibration data = 0.17) to detect modest alteration in biota associated with anthropogenic stressors. Our model was comparable in performance to other RIVPACS models developed in the United States and can produce effective assessments of biological condition over a broad, ecologically diverse region. We also provide convincing evidence that RIVPACS models can be developed primarily with GIS-based predictor variables. This framework not only simplifies the extraction of predictor variable information while potentially reducing expenditures of time and money in the collection of predictor variable information, but opens the door for development and/or application of RIVPACS models in regions where there is a paucity of local-scale, abiotic information. 相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The EC Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) recognises the need for biological monitoring. Indices derived from standard samples of macroinvertebrates are frequently used for the appraisal of the ecological quality of rivers. However, information on the errors or chance variation that can influence the value of an index is also important. 2. This paper describes a study to quantify the observed sampling variation in three ecological indices based on the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) score system across a wide range of river types and qualities. The indices are number of BMWP taxa, BMWP score and Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT). 3. The study sites were selected to encompass the four major groups within the River InVertebrate Prediction And Classification System (RIVPACS) site classification for Britain. Within each group, four sites which differed in ecological quality grade were chosen (total of 16 sites). At each site three standard RIVPACS samples were taken in each of spring, summer and autumn by trained staff. In each season, two samples were taken by one biologist and the third by a different individual to allow for within and between‐operator variation. 4. The effects of sampling variation within a season on the number of taxa, BMWP score and ASPT across all sites, irrespective of operator, could be represented by some simple parameters. We found that the sampling SD of the square root of the number of taxa, square root of BMWP score and the untransformed ASPT were roughly constant in each case, irrespective of site type or quality. For each index, SD for two and three seasons combined samples were smaller than for single season samples. 5. Inter‐operator influences on sample values were negligible (4–12% of total sampling SD) in this study. This underlines the importance of adequate training for all staff involved in extensive monitoring programmes which use standard procedures from one year to the next, but may involve different staff. 6. Indices for number of taxa, BMWP score and ASPT were all estimated with greater precision from combined season samples than from the averages of two or three seasons' samples. 7. This study enables us to estimate confidence intervals for the values of the number of taxa, BMWP score and ASPT based on single season, two or three season combined samples collected using standard RIVPACS procedures for any river site in Britain. The results can also be used in simulation models which incorporate the effects of sampling variation into assessments of the ecological quality of river sites based on the ratio of observed to RIVPACS expected values of these BMWP indices. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on the distribution of macroinvertebrate taxa
in different sized lowland Lithuanian rivers. A secondary aim was to assess ecological river quality and to determine the
most suitable biotic index. A final aim was to determine the most appropriate macroinvertebrate families for river quality
assessment in Lithuania. Species composition and quantitative characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrate communities have
been investigated using standard kick-sampling method by a standard hand net in 24 different river sites in spring. Physical
and chemical environmental parameters were measured in the same study site as the macroinvertebrate sampling. A total of 186
taxa representing 66 families or higher taxonomic ranks of benthic macroinvertebrates have been identified. Water temperature
and current velocity influenced the highest number of ivestigated families. Seven of the most tolerant and eleven of the most
sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa for hydrochemical parameters related with organic pollution were determined. The DSFI method
was founded to be the best index for assessment of ecological status for Lithuanian rivers until more accurate estimation

In contrast to most large rivers in Europe, the biggest European river Volga including its tributaries has still remained uncontaminated in its headwaters. Therefore the upper Volga River system represents an appropriate system for investigation of relations of bioassessment indices with natural environmental factors. Moreover, it allows the definition of reference conditions for medium-size and large lowland rivers in Europe. The aim of this study was to analyse relations between Saprobic Index (SI), SPEAR indices, and other macroinvertebrate community indices and basic environmental factors in the upper Volga River system. Besides, preliminary ecological status classification (according to the EU Water Framework Directive) was proposed for SI and SPEARpesticides indices for the system investigated. The analysed data set contained information on macroinvertebrates, basic habitat characteristics and water physico-chemical parameters from 53 sample sites. The results showed that SI and SPEAR indices were independent of channel width and related river longitudinal factors. Furthermore, the results indicated the index SPEARpesticides to be potentially applicable across different types of watercourses as well as across different biogeographical regions in Europe showing similar boundaries of ecological status classes (at least between High, Good, and Moderate). A Multi-Habitat-Sampling method was recommended for SPEARpesticides. Saprobic reference conditions of the lowland rivers were found to be beta-mesosaprobic. The relatively high boundary between High and Good classes resulted from naturally high organic matter concentrations. Due to indicating common pollution sources (i.e. organic, agricultural and industrial), the herein suggested methodologies have a potential to be applied in other large river systems in Europe. Subsampling that counts and identifies a random subset of individuals from field samples is widespread yet controversial. We evaluated the effects of fixed-count size on macroinvertebrate richness, site separation, and performance of modeled and null (i.e., natural variation adjusted and unadjusted, respectively) biological indices in Chinese monsoonal stream sites. To do so, we estimated the fixed-count size that was adequate to collect 95% of the estimated true regional macroinvertebrate taxa richness, and we also evaluated the effects of fixed-count size on site and group (reference vs test) separation, and the precision, sensitivity and responsiveness of modeled and null multimetric indices (MMI) and observed/expected (O/E) indices. Random subsamples of individual fixed-count sizes ranged from 50 to 500. Mean cumulative taxa richness continued to increase with increasing fixed-count size. We found that 150 and 200 individuals were needed to collect 75% of estimated true species richness 75% and 95% of the time, respectively. We estimated that at least 1500 individuals per site were required for collecting 95% of estimated true species richness. Site and group separation and classification strength also improved with increased fixed-count size. Larger fixed-count sizes improved the performance of modeled and null O/E50 (O/E calculated using taxa with probabilities of capture ≥0.5); however, they showed no significant difference for modeled and null MMIs and O/E0 (O/E calculated using all taxa). Overall, we found that fixed-counts affected richness and site/group separation, but not index performance. Until China develops standard sampling methods, we recommend using fixed-count sizes of 500 individuals and rarefaction of ≥200 individuals to limit the effects of sampling error for site and group separation and for precise and accurate bioassessment, respectively. 相似文献

Macrobenthic communities were surveyed in 1987–88 as part of acomprehensive study of fish kills and water quality in the upper TrinityRiver. The purpose was to characterize macrobenthic integrity in relation toambient and storm-associated water quality and other environmental factors.No physical habitat features were found to be substantially limiting toaquatic life. Water and sediment quality generally were good, andmacrobenthic communities typically were healthy. Ecological conditions werevastly improved compared to the recent past, attributable mainly todecreased contaminant loading from wastewater treatment plants and reducedincidence of raw sewage bypassing. Nonetheless, some impact was evident incertain reaches. Deleterious effects at Beach St. evidently resulted frompesticides derived from urban runoff. Slight impacts by dissolved metalswere suggested for Grand Prairie and Continental Ave.; possible sourcesincluded urban runoff and wastewater treatment plant effluents. Moderateimpacts at S. Loop 12 were attributed to low-flow toxicity induced by awastewater treatment plant discharge; ammonia and chlorine were consideredprimarily responsible, with metals and pesticides possibly involved.Macrobenthic communities were somewhat degraded from Trinidad to US 79, dueto storm-related stresses by DO depression, pesticides, and metallic oxides.Overall impacts were relatively slight on a long-term basis, however, and ahigh aquatic life use was attained at most sites. The degree of macrobenthicintegrity was considered remarkable for an effluent-dominated system withsuch extensive urbanization in the watershed. 相似文献
