This work studied the ecological integrity of river ecosystems inside the Ordesa‐Viñamala Biosphere Reserve in the central Spanish Pyrenees. Despite its protected status, the reserve endures a considerable number of human stresses, thus the aim was to evaluate the conservation status of the two river basins inside the protected area: The Gállego River Basin, inside the transition zone of the protected area and which allows a wide range of human activities; and the Ara River Basin, inside the buffer zone where only sound ecological practices are authorised. The environmental status of river ecosystems was analysed by studying fish and macroinvertebrate communities, hydrochemical and habitat characteristics and by calculating environmental quality indices. From August to September 2011, a total of 14 sites were sampled. Fish sampling was conducted using electrofishing gear, and macroinvertebrate were sampled by applying the IBMWP and IASPT procedures. Results showed that, while the Ara River Basin maintains a solid ecological integrity, the Gállego River Basin endures important habitat alteration. Trout, the dominant and exclusive species in the Ara River, were absent and replaced by translocated native cyprinids in the Gállego River Basin. This colonisation was explained by the alteration of the stream ecosystems and their homogenisation. The study of macroinvertebrate communities and the diagnosis obtained with the environmental quality indices also enhanced the deficient ecological integrity of some sites in the Gállego River. The results suggest that the Biosphere Reserve is not providing adequate protection to streams inside its boundaries, leading to major degradation of their biological integrity.

Data on macroinvertebrates of selected reference sites were compiled from a long-term monitoring programme carried out in the Mediterranean Catalan Basins (NE Spain) that permitted analysis for nine years, from 1996 to 2004, using a homogeneous data collection procedure. This study aims to analyse the differences in composition and structure of macroinvertebrate communities at family level in five Mediterranean river types, and the values of biological quality metrics (IBMWP and IASPT indices, taxon richness and EPT) in reference conditions. Also differences between seasons (spring vs. summer) and between dry and wet periods were analysed. The dry and wet periods were determined using the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI). A total of 29 reference sites were selected out of 184 sampling sites analysed, and 171 reference samples were available (from 1996 to 2004), of which 88 were sampled in dry periods, whereas 83 correspond to wet periods. Differences on community composition at family level were appreciated, clustering the rivers in three different groups: (1) rivers with a continuous flow regime located in siliceous zones; (2) rivers with a continuous flow regime located in calcareous zones; and (3) temporary rivers regardless of geology. Moreover, our results explain that the characteristics of hydrological periods (dry and wet) characterize the differences between communities better than just the season. The analysis of four biological quality metrics reveals clear differences between values obtained from dry and wet periods concerning taxon richness, EPT values and IBMWP biological indices, whereas the IASPT index does not show significant differences. The median taxonomic richness in wet periods is 32 macroinvertebrate families per sample while in dry periods this value falls to 22. Reference values of IBMWP index, the total number of taxa, and EPT metric are different between dry and wet periods in spring samples, while these differences are not relevant for IASPT index except for temporary streams. Hydrological specific conditions should additionally be considered in order to better calculate biological reference conditions, and to properly apply biological quality metrics used to establish the ecological status in Mediterranean rivers, especially in temporary ones. The use of the dry–wet period classification according to the climate characteristic results is a more accurate application of the Water Framework Directive in Mediterranean rivers. Implications of future climate change should be also considered from our results.

SUMMARY 1. The effects of catchment urbanisation on water quality were examined for 30 streams (stratified into 15, 50 and 100 km2 ± 25% catchments) in the Etowah River basin, Georgia, U.S.A. We examined relationships between land cover (implying cover and use) in these catchments (e.g. urban, forest and agriculture) and macroinvertebrate assemblage attributes using several previously published indices to summarise macroinvertebrate response. Based on a priori predictions as to mechanisms of biotic impairment under changing land cover, additional measurements were made to assess geomorphology, hydrology and chemistry in each stream. 2. We found strong relationships between catchment land cover and stream biota. Taxon richness and other biotic indices that reflected good water quality were negatively related to urban land cover and positively related to forest land cover. Urban land cover alone explained 29–38% of the variation in some macroinvertebrate indices. Reduced water quality was detectable at c. >15% urban land cover. 3. Urban land cover correlated with a number of geomorphic variables such as stream bed sediment size (–) and total suspended solids (+) as well as a number of water chemistry variables including nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations (+), specific conductance (+) and turbidity (+). Biotic indices were better predicted by these reach scale variables than single, catchment scale land cover variables. Multiple regression models explained 69% of variation in total taxon richness and 78% of the variation in the Invertebrate Community Index (ICI) using phi variability, specific conductance and depth, and riffle phi, specific conductance and phi variability, respectively. 4. Indirect ordination analysis was used to describe assemblage and functional group changes among sites and corroborate which environmental variables were most important in driving differences in macroinvertebrate assemblages. The first axis in a non‐metric multidimensional scaling ordination was highly related to environmental variables (slope, specific conductance, phi variability; adj. R2=0.83) that were also important in our multiple regression models. 5. Catchment urbanisation resulted in less diverse and more tolerant stream macroinvertebrate assemblages via increased sediment transport, reduced stream bed sediment size and increased solutes. The biotic indices that were most sensitive to environmental variation were taxon richness, EPT richness and the ICI. Our results were largely consistent over the range in basin size we tested.

Macroinvertebrate assemblages are structured by a number of abiotic and biotic factors interacting simultaneously. We investigated macroinvertebrate assemblages along gradients of human disturbance and morphometric characteristics in five lakes connected by the same stream. We aimed to assess the relative effects of environmental gradients on macroinvertebrate assemblages and to investigate whether water quality effects on the assemblages were correlated with buffer land use. There were significant differences in macroinvertebrate community compositions among lakes, and our results indicated that oligochaetes (mainly Limnodrilus) and insects (mainly Chironomus) contributed highly to the differences. We used redundancy analysis with variation partitioning to quantify the independent and combined anthropogenic effects of water quality and land use gradients on the macroinvertebrate community. The independent effect of water quality was responsible for 17% of the total variance in macroinvertebrate community composition, the independent effect of buffer land use accounted for 6% of variation, and the combined variation between land use change and water quality accounted for 12%. Our study indicated that both the independent effects of land use and within‐lake water quality can explain the influence in macroinvertebrate assemblages, with significant interactions between the two. This is rather important to notice that changes in buffer land use generally may alter nutrient inputs and thus severely affect abiotic conditions encountered by macroinvertebrate. Our study demonstrates that considering buffer zone effects explicitly may be significant in the selection and application of conservation and management strategies.

In Spain, a national project known as GUADALMED, focusing on Mediterranean streams, has been carried out from 1998 to 2005 to implement the European water framework directive (WFD) requirements. One of the main objectives of the second phase of the project (2002–2005) was to develop a predictive system for the Spanish Mediterranean aquatic macroinvertebrate communities. A combined-season (spring, summer, and autumn) predictive model was developed by using the latest improvements on the selection of best predictor variables. Overall model performance measures were used to select the best discriminant function (DF) models, and also to evaluate their biases and precision. The final predictive model was based on the best five DF models. Each one of these models involved eight environmental variables. Final observed (O), expected (E), and O/E values for the number of macroinvertebrate families (NFAM) and two biotic indices (IBMWP and IASPT) were calculated by averaging their values, previously weighted by the quality of each DF model. Regression analyses among the final O and E values for the calibration dataset showed a high proximity to the ideal theoretical model, where the final E values explained 73–84% of the variation present in the macroinvertebrate communities of the Spanish Mediterranean watercourses. The ANOVA performed among the reference (calibration and validation) and test datasets showed clear differences for the O/E values. Finally, the assessments carried out by the predictive model were sensitive to anthropogenic pressure present in the study area and allowed the definition of five ecological status classes according to the WFD requirements. A number of bioindicators and biotic indices and scores based on benthic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, fishes, aquatic and riparian vegetation in relation to physicochemical parameters have been applied in assessing the water quality of the rivers Alfeios and Pineios (Peloponnisos, Greece). According to the findings, the water quality in both rivers varied from very poor to very good. Among the bioindicators used, the benthic macroinvertebrates seem to be the most reliable. The BBI and IBE were the most applicable indexes while the applicability of the IBMWP and IASPT in the Greek region can be enforced with the inclusion of the Diptreran family Rhagionidae and the Coleopteran family Elminthidae.

The rate of freshwater invasions may be increasing, and macroinvertebrate invaders can have significant impacts on native macroinvertebrate assemblage structure through biotic interactions. More pollution-tolerant invaders can often replace native species. We examined implications of a species replacement for accurate biological monitoring of river systems using biotic indices. Our study uses Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man as examples of countries that possess river networks with many riverine macroinvertebrate assemblages subject to invasion. The introduced amphipod crustacean Gammarus pulex has replaced the native species G. duebeni celticus in many rivers in N. Ireland and the Isle of Man. Extensive seasonal data sets (119 sites) from three river networks, Lough Neagh and the Lagan in N. Ireland, and island-wide in the Isle of Man, were used to investigate the assumed equivalence of the native and invader in biotic indices concerned with the water quality monitoring system. Based on the derivation of the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) score, the Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT), as an example of a commonly used biotic index of water quality, we found index scores were lower in G. pulex sites compared to G. d. celticus-only sites. This indicated that assemblages were dominated by taxa more tolerant of organic pollution in the invader sites and more sensitive in the native sites. Inclusion of the invader in generation of the ASPT index, overinflated the ASPT values obtained compared to those with the native’s inclusion. This questions the accuracy of the ASPT and similar indices in rivers where the invader had replaced the native. We argue that with invasion pressures increasing, the validity of water quality indices such as the BMWP/ASPT needs to be re-examined in catchments where invaders have replaced natives. Indices such as the BMWP/ASPT are based on family level taxa and are inevitably coarse in their resolution given the wide range of water qualities tolerated by different genera within families. We argue that this resolution is even more compromised by the presence of very pollution-tolerant invaders, who may have replaced natives in disturbed or degraded river systems. The whole structure of water quality indices such as the BMWP/ASPT may need revising to take into account the presence of invasive species within monitored assemblages.

The functional feeding groups and diversity of macroinvertebrate communities associated with duckweed mats in the New Years River (two sites) and Bloukrans River (two sites), Eastern Cape province, South Africa, were assessed. Duckweed (Lemnaceae) is a ubiquitous family of floating macrophytes. A total of 41 macroinvertebrate families were collected monthly over a six-month period from February to July 2014. Duckweed biomass in both rivers was highly variable both temporally and spatially. The majority of identified macroinvertebrate taxa were predators and detritivores, with a small percentage of herbivores. An average of approximately 26% of the macroinvertebrate taxa found were from families that include species from more than one functional feeding group. Although overall measures of diversity and ecosystem health (Fisher’s α and Simpson’s index) remained constant over time in the New Years River, significant differences in macroinvertebrate community structure were seen between sites and months on both rivers, with dissimilarity being driven by a larger number of species in the New Years River. This high variability within macroinvertebrate assemblages probably reflects a combination of heterogeneous duckweed distribution, variation in physico-chemistry, opportunistic behaviours of macroinvertebrate predators and/or successional colonisation of duckweed mats.

Biological indicators are increasingly being used as integrative measures of the ecosystem health in streams, particularly those using macroinvertebrate assemblage composition. Monitoring biological quality of rivers has not a long tradition in some Mediterranean European countries like Spain. Several macroinvertebrate metrics have been recently proposed to assess ecological status in Mediterranean streams, so it is necessary to compare the use of proposed biological quality metrics to select the most appropriate ones.In the present work, two classic richness metrics (total number of families and number of the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera families), three indices (IBMWP, IASPT and t-BMWQ) and two multimetric indices, recently proposed to be used in Mediterranean streams (ICM-9 and ICM-11a or IMMi-L), were compared by the analysis of the sensitivity of these metrics to a multiple stressor gradient which reflected the main pressures present in the study area. For this purpose, data from 193 sites sampled in spring (95 reference sites and 98 disturbed sites) belonging to five different Mediterranean stream types present in 35 basins were studied. The results showed that the adjusted regression coefficients (r2) for all seven metrics in the exponential regression models were higher than linear ones, thus indicating an exponential relationship between metrics and the environmental alteration. The two studied multimetric indices presented higher regression coefficients (r2 = 0.590–0.669) than the three indices (r2 = 0.524–0.574) and the two metrics (r2 = 0.471–0.525), therefore showing a better response to a stressor gradient in Mediterranean streams. Within the multimetric indices group, ICM-11a showed the highest regression coefficients. Based on the results obtained, we suggest using the ICM-11a, apart from the IBMWP, to assess ecological status in Mediterranean streams.

1. The influence of land use and physico-chemical factors on stream macroinvertebrates was analysed at fifteen sites over a 2-year period in a single conifer-afforested catchment in Ireland, in an area subject to very low levels of atmospheric pollution. 2. Macroinvertebrate assemblages were classified using two-way indicator species analysis into five major groupings that were related to distance from headwaters and land use. Trends in macroinvertebrate community composition were related to changes in physico-chemical and biotic characteristics of the river and its tributaries using canonical correspondence analysis. 3. Local ecological factors (e.g. acid water, moss, shading or agricultural runoff), longitudinal trends in stream physico-chemistry (related to distance from headwaters, geology and land use) and season (related to life history patterns of the invertebrates) were the explanatory variables of spatio-temporal patterns in macroinvertebrate community composition in the catchment. 4. Spatial variation in macroinvertebrate density, taxon richness, diversity and evenness was investigated in relation to environmental characteristics of the study sites using Spearman’s rank correlation, principal components analysis and stepwise multiple regression. Invertebrate density and richness increased with distance from the headwater and associated increases in pH, water hardness and nutrients. Macroinvertebrate density and richness also increased with increasing moss weight. Invertebrate diversity and evenness increased with shading of the channel. 5. The increase in macroinvertebrate density and richness and changes in community composition were particularly marked over a relatively short (1.2 km) distance in one tributary, and were concurrent with a rapid increase in stream pH of 1.7 units. 6. Although macroinvertebrate communities at conifer-afforested sites were not impoverished in the same way as those in some other parts of Europe, they differed from the communities found above and below the plantation. This appeared to be owing to the primary importance of local ecological factors and the effect that the longitudinal position of these forest sites within the river system had on their physico-chemical and biotic nature.

Intra-lake variation of fossil Cladocera (Crustacea) assemblages in 31 surface sediment samples in Lake Pieni-Kauro and River Saavanjoki, eastern Finland, was examined with an objective to identify habitat specificity of Cladocera in relation to local hydrology-related environmental factors. The surface sediment assemblages showed high levels of heterogeneity, mainly as to water depth and lentic–lotic gradients in the lake–river complex. This was evident from the principal component analysis which indicated a major trend from shallow to deep samples and a secondary trend from lentic to lotic samples, and from redundancy analysis (RDA), which recognized water depth and river flow as the most important environmental variables in explaining cladoceran variability within the dataset. According to the RDA and generalized linear models, Daphnia spp., Bosmina (Eubosmina), and Alona quadrangularis showed association with deep water localities, whereas Bosmina longirostris and Alona affinis preferred littoral habitats. Acroperus harpae and Chydorus sphaericus s.l. appeared to favor lotic habitats. The results propose that littoral taxa are primarily deposited postmortem or after molting close to their shallow water habitats, while planktonic cladocerans accumulate principally in deepwater locations. Accordingly, it appears that in heterogeneous basins intra-lake surface sediment samples integrate locally living fauna that is driven by local hydrology-related factors, such as water depth, sediment properties, macrophytes, and river flow and coupling biotic interactions.

The typical urban river is affected by various factors relating to water quality problems, physical habitat modification (for flood prevention) and flashy flows. These restrict macroinvertebrate biodiversity such that a few tolerant taxa may dominate and more sensitive organisms may be completely absent. This paper presents the findings of a year long, macroinvertebrate survey of an urban river catchment and investigates the effects of physical habitat modification on macroinvertebrates using various analytical tools. It is demonstrated that considerable variation in invertebrate species, abundance, diversity and tolerance exists between different urban rivers, sites on the same river and individual sites at different sampling times. Analysis of paired sites with similar water quality, but contrasting physical habitat, indicates that less modified sites support a slightly higher quality macroinvertebrate fauna (defined by biotic score and beta diversity) than heavily engineered sites. It is concluded that water quality is the primary limiting factor of invertebrate biodiversity in the heavily urbanized River Tame catchment. The removal of heavy engineering structures may facilitate improvements to invertebrate fauna in urban rivers only in conjunction with improvements to water quality.

Blanket peat catchments are important biodiversity refugia. Key pressures on peatland catchment water bodies include artificial drainage, forestry, over-grazing, wind farm development and climate change, and assessment of these pressures requires sensitive monitoring programmes. This study, undertaken in two neighbouring blanket peat catchments, examined the variability in macroinvertebrate and diatom assemblages and related indices in response to spatial and seasonal variability. Multivariate analysis revealed significant trends in the taxa distribution of both groups and the indices downstream and away from the constraining influence of the peat. However, the ecological quality ratios and status assessments for the associated water bodies were consistent irrespective of spatial variability in assemblages and raw indices. Significant seasonal trends emerged only in the macroinvertebrate assemblages and indices. This study contributes to the understanding of sources of uncertainty in ecological assessment and thus provides valuable information for the calibration of assessment protocols for sensitive peatland catchments.

Marshland streams along European coastlines are typically located in the transition zone from limnic to brackish conditions. They constitute a distinct and important stream type within the German stream typology, which is predominantly characterised by tidal influence and salinity. According to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) the basis for the abiotic classification of European transitional and coastal waters is the ‘Venice System’ (Weber, M., 2005. Rostocker Meeresbiol. Beitr. 14, 7–15). However, the extreme spatial and temporal variability in salinity and tidal influence determines and controls the macroinvertebrate communities of marshland river and stream ecosystems and hampers the application of the ‘Venice System’. Earlier, purely biotic classifications of brackish waters typically classify different brackish water zones, each with a specific macroinvertebrate community, and often yield unsatisfactory results due to the extensively dynamic abiotic factors found in marshland streams. In practice, the permanent impact of tidal charge means that stable salinity zones do not exist. This effect can than be intensified by freshwater discharges after heavy rainfall or high tides in combination with strong winds that hinder discharge into the open sea. To overcome the restricted applicability of abiotic and biotic classification systems, we present a scoring system for marshland streams that combines the abiotic salinity classes of the ‘Venice System’ with the salinity preferences of the macroinvertebrate community. This proposal is based on literature data for macroinvertebrate salinity tolerances and preferences. According to the 137 references that were evaluated, 151 macroinvertebrate taxa were classified into six salinity groups. In a second step, we applied this scoring scheme to empirical data from two official quality assessment surveys. These surveys had been carried out in ten estuary tributaries of German marshland areas in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein in order to implement the WFD. Applying the scoring system to these data revealed a clear (and expected) gradient that was not expressed in the abiotic data. Thus we conclude that the biotic salinity preferences of benthic macroinvertebrates are a useful baseline metric for the ecological assessment of marshland streams and other transitional waters. Regional revision and adaptation of taxonomic salinity preferences would broaden the applicability of this assessment to transitional waters worldwide.

We compared the responsiveness of macroinvertebrate assemblages to variation in water quality (ions, nutrients, dissolved metals, and suspended sediment) in two mesohabitats within the main channel of three North American great rivers, the Upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio. Based on about 400 paired samples, we examined the responsiveness of benthic assemblages sampled in the littoral zone and assemblages sampled from the surface of woody snags in the main channel. The assemblages in the two mesohabitats were different in all rivers. Taxa richness was much higher in the benthos than on snags. Macroinvertebrate assemblage response to water quality variation was weak on the Mississippi River, but the reasons for this are unknown. Based on analysis of the similarity between the composition of assemblages from groups of sites with high and low concentrations of water quality variables, benthic assemblages were only slightly more sensitive to water chemistry variation than were snag assemblages. Results of two-sample comparisons between groups of sites with high and low concentrations of water quality variables were consistent with rank correlations of assemblage metrics with water quality. In general, there was little difference between habitats in response to variation in water quality on any river. Our simple method of snag sampling in great rivers is usually much easier than littoral benthic sampling because it does not require wading. Snag sampling in large rivers has some limitations (e.g., natural snags are sometimes absent, samples are semi-quantitative), but lack of sensitivity to water quality gradients compared to the benthos is not among them.
