Habitat fragmentation is a major threat to the maintenance of genetic diversity in many plant populations. Genetic effects of population size have received far more attention than the effects of isolation—or connectivity—but both are key components of the fragmentation process. To analyze the consequences of fragment size and connectivity on the neutral genetic variation and population genetic structure of the dominant gypsophile Lepidium subulatum, we selected 20 fragments along two continuous gradients of size and degree of isolation in a fragmented gypsum landscape of Central Spain. We used eight polymorphic microsatellite markers, and analyzed a total of 344 individuals. Populations were characterized by high levels of genetic diversity and low inbreeding coefficients, which agrees with the mainly outcrossing system of L. subulatum and its high abundance in gypsum landscapes. Bayesian clustering methods, pairwise F ST values and analysis of molecular variance revealed low among-population differentiation, with no significant isolation by distance. However, several genetic diversity indices such as allelic richness, number of effective alleles, expected heterozygosity and number of private alleles were negatively related to population isolation. The higher genetic diversity found on more connected fragments suggests higher rates of gene flow among more connected populations. Overall, our results highlight that fragmentation can have important effects on intra-population genetic processes even for locally abundant, dominant species. This, together with previously documented effects of connectivity on fitness of gypsophile species highlights the importance of including habitat connectivity in management and conservation strategies of this type of semiarid systems. 相似文献

Floral nectar production is central to plant pollination, and hence to human wellbeing. As floral nectar is essentially a solution in water of various sugars, it is likely a valuable plant resource, especially in terms of energy, with plants experiencing costs/trade-offs associated with its production or absorption and adopting mechanisms to regulate nectar in flowers. Possible costs of nectar production may also influence the evolution of nectar volume, concentration and composition, of pollination syndromes involving floral nectar, and the production of some crops. There has been frequent agreement that costs of floral nectar production are significant, but relevant evidence is scant and difficult to interpret. Convincing direct evidence comes from experimental studies that relate either enhanced nectar sugar production (through repeated nectar removal) to reduced ability to produce seeds, or increased sugar availability (through absorption of additional artificial nectar) to increased seed production. Proportions of available photosynthate allocated by plants to nectar production may also indicate nectar cost. However, such studies are rare, some do not include treatments of all (or almost all) flowers per plant, and all lack quantitative cost–benefit comparisons for nectar production. Additional circumstantial evidence of nectar cost is difficult to interpret and largely equivocal. Future research should repeat direct experimental approaches that relate reduced or enhanced nectar sugar availability for a plant with consequent ability to produce seeds. To avoid confounding effects of inter-flower resource transfer, each plant should experience a single treatment, with treatment of all or almost all flowers per plant. Resource allocation by plants, pathways used for resource transfer, and the locations of resource sources and sinks should also be investigated. Future research should also consider extension of nectar cost into other areas of biology. For example, evolutionary models of nectar production are rare but should be possible if plant fitness gains and costs associated with nectar production are expressed in the same currency, such as energy. It should then be possible to understand observed nectar production for different plant species and pollination syndromes involving floral nectar. In addition, potential economic benefits should be possible to assess if relationships between nectar production and crop value are evaluated. 相似文献

Background: In the Middle East region, consanguinity remains to be a central feature where it has shown an increasing trend. Breast cancer is an extremely complex disease, characterized by a progressive multistep process caused by interactions of both environmental and genetic factors. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the possible effect of consanguinity on the risk of breast cancer in a population with a high rate of consanguinity and find the associated risk-modifying factors. Subjects and methods: The study included 167 Qatari and other Arab expatriates women with breast cancer and 341 age and ethnicity matched control women. A questionnaire that included the socio-demographic information, type of consanguinity, medical history, life style habits, dietary intake and tumor grade was designed to collect, the information of cases and controls. A total number of 214 breast cancer patients were approached and 167 cases completed the questionnaires with a response rate of 78%. Of the 417 healthy women who agreed to participate in this study, 341 responded to the questionnaire (81.8%). Results: The study revealed that the rate of parental consanguinity was lower in breast cancer patients (24%) than in controls (32.3%) (p = 0.062). Female controls were slightly younger (46.5 ± 11.9) than breast cancer patients (48.4 ± 10.7). Breast cancer incidence was significantly higher in Qatari women (34.1%) compared to other Arab women (65.9%) (p = 0.034). A significant difference was noted only in occupation of the studied women between cases and controls (p < 0.001). Overweight (46.7%) and obesity (32.9%) were significantly higher in female breast cancer patients compared to controls (p = 0.028). Overall, the mean coefficient of consanguinity was lower in breast cancer patients (0.014) than in controls (0.018) (p = 0.0125). Family history of breast cancer was significantly more often in breast cancer patients (14.4%) than in controls (6.2%) (p = 0.002). However, the family history of breast cancer was more often positive in cases of non-consanguineous parents (15.7%) than cases of consanguineous parents (10.0%). Conclusion: The present study revealed the lack of association between of breast cancer and the parental consanguinity in Arab women residing in Qatar. The family history of breast cancer and the body mass index (BMI) are highly associated with breast cancer. 相似文献

A long‐standing question in biology and economics is whether individual organisms evolve to behave as if they were striving to maximize some goal function. We here formalize this “as if” question in a patch‐structured population in which individuals obtain material payoffs from (perhaps very complex multimove) social interactions. These material payoffs determine personal fitness and, ultimately, invasion fitness. We ask whether individuals in uninvadable population states will appear to be maximizing conventional goal functions (with population‐structure coefficients exogenous to the individual's behavior), when what is really being maximized is invasion fitness at the genetic level. We reach two broad conclusions. First, no simple and general individual‐centered goal function emerges from the analysis. This stems from the fact that invasion fitness is a gene‐centered multigenerational measure of evolutionary success. Second, when selection is weak, all multigenerational effects of selection can be summarized in a neutral type‐distribution quantifying identity‐by‐descent between individuals within patches. Individuals then behave as if they were striving to maximize a weighted sum of material payoffs (own and others). At an uninvadable state it is as if individuals would freely choose their actions and play a Nash equilibrium of a game with a goal function that combines self‐interest (own material payoff), group interest (group material payoff if everyone does the same), and local rivalry (material payoff differences). 相似文献

Harsh environment at high altitude may affect the mating system of plant species, especially those with wide ecological amplitude. Smaller effective neighbourhood size, less pollen and seed production, higher rate of inbreeding and a shift towards vegetative propagation may be involved. These changes can be reflected in spatial genetic structure (SGS). Populations of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were analysed along an altitudinal cline to verify whether SGS increases with altitude. Three putatively autochthonous populations in Tyrol (Austria) at 800, 1,200 and 1,600?m above sea level (asl) were studied. Six highly polymorphic DNA markers (expressed sequence tag?Cderived simple sequence repeats, EST-SSRs) were used to genotype a total of 450 contiguous trees (150 trees per population). Loiselle??s kinship coefficient was used to quantify SGS. Against expectation no significant SGS was found in any of the populations, indicating a random spatial pattern. Significant SGS was observed when all populations were treated as a single one conforming to an isolation-by-distance pattern. Nearly identical allelic frequencies were found resulting in very small population differentiation (F ST?=?0.002). The fixation index decreased with diameter at breast height (a proxy for age) indicating natural selection against inbred trees. The results of this study indicate that seed and pollen dispersal mechanisms in Norway spruce are strongly counteracting spatial aggregation of similar genotypes even at high elevations. 相似文献

The stability of models of age-dependent predation in continuous time with predators exhibiting a functional response are analyzed. A number of new features of biological importance emerge that are not present in simpler models. These include limits to the length of juvenile periods (both upper and lower) for stability, and the possibility that increases or decreases in any of the model parameters can be stabilizing or destabilizing. Hence, increased delays are not necessarily destabilizing. The variance in the length of the juvenile period is shown to be an important factor determining stability. Pollinators mediate the evolution of secondary floral traits through both natural and sexual selection. Gender-biased nectar, for example, could be maintained by one or both, depending on the interactions between plants and pollinators. Here, I investigate pollinator responses to gender-biased nectar using the dichogamous herb Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana (Gesneriaceae) which produces more nectar during the male floral phase. Previous research showed that the hummingbird pollinator Phaethornis striigularis visited male-phase flowers more often than female-phase flowers, and multiple visits benefited male more than female fecundity. If sexual selection maintains male-biased rewards, hummingbirds should prefer more-rewarding flowers independent of floral gender. If, however, differential rewards are partially maintained through natural selection, hummingbirds should respond to asymmetry with visits that reduce geitonogamy, i.e. selfing and pollen discounting. In plants with male biases, these visit types include single-flower visits and movements from low to high rewards. To test these predictions, I manipulated nectar asymmetry between pairs of real or artificial flowers on plants and recorded foraging behaviour. I also assessed maternal costs of selfing using hand pollinations. For plants with real flowers, hummingbirds preferred more-rewarding flowers and male-phase morphology, the latter possibly owing to previous experience. At artificial arrays, hummingbirds responded to extreme reward asymmetry with increased single-flower visits; however, they moved from high to low rewards more often than low to high. Finally, selfed flowers did not produce inferior seeds. In summary, sexual selection, more so than geitonogamy avoidance, maintains nectar biases in C. friedrichsthaliana, in one of the clearest examples of sexual selection in plants, to date. 相似文献

Hunted and unhunted populations of greywing francolin Francolinus africanus have been studied in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa in order to understand the effects of hunting on the demography and genetic structure of these populations. Greywing population density cycled annually for both hunted and unhunted populations. However, there was an apparent pulse of immigration of sub-dominant birds, and earlier reproduction, in the hunted populations immediately after the winter hunting season. Average levels of allozyme heterozygosity (H) for hunted and unhunted populations were both 0.076, and although the proportion of polymorphic loci per sample and the mean number of alleles per locus for each sample were lower for the hunted populations than for the unhunted populations, these differences were not significant. However, the hunted populations displayed higher levels of outbreeding (lower F
IS and F
IT values) than those for unhunted populations. Therefore, it is concluded that although greywing francolin populations contain relatively high levels of genetic heterogeneity, it is probably the increased levels of local immigration following hunting which reduces the effects of any reduction in genetic variation due to a decrease in local population size from hunting. 相似文献

Forest dieback is a worldwide problem that is likely to increase with climate change and increasing human demands for resources. Eucalyptus camaldulensis forests are an acute example of forest dieback, with 70% of the Victorian Murray River floodplain in some state of dieback. If we are to halt dieback in these floodplain forests, we need to understand what makes stands susceptible to dieback. Forest diebacks are often related to stand structure, with dieback more severe in senescent or high‐density stands. We determined whether certain stand structures make these forests more susceptible to dieback. We undertook an extensive survey of 176 stands across 100 000 ha of forest, covering the range of stand condition on this floodplain. Large and small trees (20‐, 40‐, 80‐ and 120‐cm diameter) showed a similar reduction in the probability of being alive with decreasing stand condition. A slight improvement in stand condition was found at higher densities and basal areas, which may reflect the higher productivity or younger age of these stands. Stand condition was moderately, positively correlated with longitude, with stand condition being higher in the east of the Murray River floodplain where flooding frequencies are currently higher. This suggests that dieback of these floodplain forests would be more effectively mitigated by increased water availability through flooding than by altering stand structure. 相似文献

We studied the interrelation between nectary structure (13 parameters), nectar characteristics (yield, chemical composition), and flower size of 11 Labiatae species in a Mediterranean shrub community near Athens, Greece. We also explored whether the above attributes are affected by the Mediterranean summer drought constraints. Our findings show that among all nectary parameters studied, nectary size and stomatal opening are the most important in (positively) shaping nectar secretion, nectary size being the most meaningful. Nectary structure is correlated to quantity of the nectar secreted, not its quality. Wide flowers bear wide nectaries with large stomatal openings, whereas deep flowers are not related to any nectary size. Corolla size (both length and width) and nectary stomatal opening decrease with flowering time. This applies also to nectary size, nectar volume and sugar content of the perennials (9 species). All above cases of time dependence show that there is a constraint effect of Mediterranean climate on floral and nectary structure, reflected also as a decrease in nectar secretion. Nectary structure in Labiatae is largely shaped by both phylogenetic and climate constraints. On the other hand, although nectar is largely influenced by nectary structure, it is to a large extent ecologically biased, implying that, in addition to phylogeny, there are many other ecological parameters interfering in its secretion such as time within the season, life history, and light requirements. 相似文献

Variation in spatial patterns of competing organisms is of fundamental importance for community and population processes. Yet the mechanisms controlling subjects like the degree of spatial aggregation in competing insect larvae across fragmented resources have rarely been addressed. In the present study, we tested for systematic differences in the spatial distribution patterns of Drosophila subobscura in natural fly communities, and found significant differences in two habitats that differ in the availability of breeding substrate types (decaying fruits). Assuming that the spatial egg-laying behaviour of drosophilids is under genetic control, and that different breeding substrates mediate different density-dependent larval fitness consequences, we tested whether adaptive genotypic variability is involved in the local variation of egg distribution patterns. We extracted isofemale lines from both habitats and analysed the spatial distribution of eggs achieved by single female flies under controlled laboratory conditions. This is a reasonable first test, because spatial patterns at the fly population level can be attributed to individual egg-laying behaviour. The degree of individual egg aggregation significantly depended on fly line identity, which indicates the existence of behavioural variants in natural populations. Based on habitat-dependent differences in the degree of spatial aggregation, we discuss to what extent our findings may reflect a behavioural adaptation to local breeding conditions. 相似文献

Abstract The potential of colonization to contribute to the spatial patterns of six common invertebrates in coralline algal turf was investigated on a rocky shore near Sydney, Australia. The species, which included two amphipods (Elasmopus warra, Hyale spp.), a small bivalve (Lasaea australis), a fly larva (Limonia marina), and two microgastropods (Amphithalamus incidata and Eatoniella atropurpurea), had a range of dispersal modes (larval dispersal, crawling, swimming, rafting, and passive transport). Field sampling between May 1997 and November 1999 demonstrated that the amphipods were more abundant in low‐shore areas, the fly larvae and bivalves were more abundant in mid‐shore areas, and the abundances of gastropods did not vary with tidal height. Furthermore, abundances of all species varied among patches separated by tens of metres at one time or another. To test whether rates of colonization could contribute to established patterns of abundance, habitat mimics were deployed for 2‐week periods. The supply of new individuals matched long‐term patterns of abundance at different tidal heights for E. warra and L. marina. Colonization rates also differed among patches separated by tens of metres for three of the six species. Overall, there was little evidence to suggest that common species in coralline turf are limited by colonization on local scales, regardless of their major mode of dispersal. However, the potential for colonization to determine patterns of abundance varied from species to species. 相似文献

There are several hypotheses which try to explain why particular plants produce just the number of flowers that they do. These hypotheses include: compromises between the attraction of pollinators and avoiding self-pollination by geitonogamy; optimal nectar production as a result of diminishing gains of nectar production; opportunity for selective abortion; or different bet-hedging strategies. In this paper, I present a hypothesis which interferes with the others concerning flower numbers in plants: nectar thieving can apply a selection force in plants which result in a portioning of nectar in many flowers. Gagea lutea and G. spathacea are spring geophytes naturally co-occurring in woodlands, characterised by contrasting reproductive strategies probably caused by divergent ploidy levels. The hexaploid G. lutea relies on vegetative reproduction by subterranean bulbils in young stages but completely switches to sexual reproduction once a certain bulb size is attained. The nonaploid G. spathacea seems to be sterile and reproduces only vegetatively; the plants continue to form bulbils even in the rare event of flowering. This study used AFLP genotyping to investigate the consequences of these reproductive strategies for genetic diversity. For 150 and 100 samples from three Western Pomeranian populations of G. lutea and G. spathacea, respectively, AFLP fingerprints were analysed for three different spatial scales, the patch, the transect, and the region. Applying a threshold for genotypic identity of <0.05 simple matching distance, 22?C30 genets were detected in the three G. lutea populations, with all genets confined to single populations. Clonal genets consisted of 2?C9 samples and extended over up to 28?m, but never occupied the whole length of a transect; 67?C75% of all patches had different genets. Genetic distances between genets within populations were similar to those recorded between populations. Genotyping of G. spathacea revealed a single clonal genet for all three populations sampled within a distance of 30?km. The absent genetic diversity confirms the suspected sexual sterility. Gagea spathacea seems to be one of the few non-apomictic, fully clonal vascular plants able to occupy a significant range solely by dispersal of vegetative diaspores. 相似文献
