Clearfell, burn and sow (CBS) forestry can potentially alter stream environments by increasing available light and the input of woody debris. However, little is known about how CBS forestry affects in-stream processes such as nutrient uptake. We evaluate whether short-term (2–7 years) environmental changes (e.g. light availability and woody debris) associated with CBS forestry lead to differences in nutrient uptake metrics. To do this, we measured in-stream uptake of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and ammonium (NH4) in three old growth (OG) and four CBS-affected headwater stream reaches. The abundance of fine woody debris and light availability were significantly greater in CBS-affected than in OG reaches. Uptake velocities varied from 0.0880 to 0.951 mm min?1 for NH4 and from 0.0383 to 1.06 mm min?1 for SRP across all sites. The mean uptake of SRP, but not NH4, was significantly greater (i.e. higher uptake velocities and lower uptake lengths) in CBS-affected than in OG reaches. These results suggest that CBS forestry altered the stream environment enabling greater SRP uptake relative to OG reaches. Our findings highlight the tight linkage between headwater streams and their surrounding terrestrial environment, which has direct implications for catchment-scale biogeochemical processes. 相似文献

The response of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities to flow permanence within limestone springs and headwater streams was examined across the English Peak District. At the regional scale, macroinvertebrate communities of perennial and intermittent springs displayed significant differences in the number of taxa, macroinvertebrate community abundance, diversity indices (Shannon and Simpson indices) and the Berger–Parker dominance index at intermediate discharge. However, no significant difference was recorded between intermittent and perennial sites at high discharge or when all sampling occasions were pooled. At the catchment scale, the number of taxa, community abundance and Bray–Curtis similarity coefficients within the River Lathkill differed significantly between intermittent springs and other habitats. At both the regional and catchment scale the macroinvertebrate communities of intermittent springs were characterised by a small number of taxa displaying life cycle adaptations to intermittent aquatic habitats, particularly Trichoptera. 相似文献

Summary 1. Channel complexity is an important ecological property of stream systems and is often targeted for restoration in channelised urban streams. However, channel complexity is rarely defined explicitly, and little research on channel complexity has been conducted in streams in urban catchments that have not been directly channelised by human activities. Therefore, it remains unclear whether restoration of non‐channelised urban streams has improved complexity. 2. We explicitly define channel complexity and use a multimetric approach to provide a comprehensive assessment of complexity in multiple restored, urban and forested streams on the Maryland Coastal Plain and two streams of differing land use in Colorado. We also expand on the Maryland and Colorado results with a literature survey of channel complexity from diverse geographical regions. 3. Many streams draining urban catchments in Maryland had relatively high values of some complexity metrics compared to forested reference streams in Maryland and compared to the values for pristine streams calculated from the literature. This suggests that streams in urban catchments that are not directly manipulated by human activities (e.g. channelisation or piping) may be able to maintain channel structures beneficial for aquatic organisms even when impervious surfaces are the dominant form of land use in the catchment. 4. Restored streams in Maryland had equal or lower values of many complexity metrics compared to streams draining urban catchments in Maryland. This suggests that restoration of streams draining urban catchments did not improve the overall channel complexity. 5. Our results highlight the need to explicitly define and measure the attributes of channel complexity that are targeted during restoration, to determine whether the streams in urban catchments are truly degraded with respect to channel complexity. 6. Combined with recent synthesis work suggesting that biodiversity may not be improved by increasing the channel complexity, these results indicate that targeting catchment processes may prove a more useful approach to restoration than attempting to move channel complexity in streams draining urban catchments towards conditions in forested reference streams. 相似文献

The riparian forest reduces the amount of light entering streams, which limits autochthonous primary production. The aim of this study was to evaluate temporal variation of autochthonous primary production in pristine and altered streams, with the goal of identifying indicators of change in environmental integrity in the southern Brazilian Amazon. We evaluated free algal biomass in the water column, the presence of periphyton, and the richness and cover of aquatic herbaceous plants in 20 streams (10 pristine and 10 altered, i.e., with riparian deforestation) during the dry period, at the beginning of the rainy period, and at the end of the rainy period. In altered streams, we recorded the presence of macroscopic periphyton and the amount of algal biomass varied between the dry and flood seasons. Variations in hydrological periods did not contribute to changes in algal biomass in pristine streams; we did not observe the presence of macroscopic periphyton these streams. In altered streams, 23 aquatic herbaceous species were identified, versus only four in the pristine streams. Results showed that riparian deforestation contributes to increased autochthonous primary production, which is also influenced by different hydrological periods, with algae and aquatic herbaceous plants responding differently to dry and rainy periods. The responses of these primary producers confirm their role as important bioindicators of change in the environmental integrity of southern Amazonian streams. 相似文献

From December 1996 to August 1997, beech litter breakdown and stream benthic macroinvertebrate communities were investigated to assess the effects of acidic precipitation on community structure and function in two second-order headwater streams of the Vosges Mountains (NE France). Because of microscale changes in bedrock mineral composition, one of the streams was acidified (mean pH=4.53, mean total Al=421 g.l-1) and the other circum-neutral (mean pH=7.23, mean total Al=36 g.l-1). Results showed that both litter breakdown rate and macroinvertebrate community structure were drastically affected under acidic conditions. The rate of leaf litter breakdown decreased by nine times in the acidic stream. Benthic sampling showed that scrapers were totally eradicated and both gathering and filtering collectors were drastically reduced. Such drastic effects appear to be the consequences of the toxicity of acid water including both proton and aluminum toxicity. A decrease in shredder abundance and a shift from the efficient acid-sensitive Amphipoda Gammarus fossarum to acid-tolerant Nemouroidea (mainly Leuctra sp.) was observed in the acidic stream. Our results indicate that freshwater acidification significantly alters the action of shredders processing leaf litter in the acidic stream. Consequently, interactions between structural and functional responses to acidification probably have profound consequences on the efficiency of acidified stream ecosystems, which in return may alter downstream functioning. 相似文献

The influence of predatory fish on the structure of stream food webs may be altered by the presence of forest canopy cover, and consequent differences in allochthonous inputs and primary production. Eight sites containing introduced brown trout (Salmo trutta) and eight sites that did not were sampled in the Cass region, South Island, New Zealand. For each predator category, half the sites were located in southern beech (Nothofagus) forest patches (range of canopy cover, 65–90%) and the other half were in tussock grassland. Food resources used by two dominant herbivores-detritivores were assessed using stable isotopes. 13C/12C ratios were obtained for coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), algal dominated biofilm from rocks, and larvae of Deleatidium (Ephemeroptera) and Olinga (Trichoptera). Total abundance and biomass of macroinvertebrates did not differ between streams with and without trout, but were significantly higher at grassland sites than forested sites. However, taxon richness and species composition differed substantially between trout and no-trout sites, irrespective of whether streams were located in forest or not. Trout streams typically contained more taxa, had low biomass of predatory invertebrates and large shredders, but a high proportion of consumers with cases or shells. The standing stock of CPOM was higher at forested sites, but there was less FPOM and more algae at sites with trout, regardless of the presence or absence of forest cover. The stable carbon isotope range for biofilm on rocks was broad and encompassed the narrow CPOM and FPOM ranges. At trout sites, carbon isotope ratios of Deleatidium, the most abundant invertebrate primary consumer, were closely related to biofilm values, but no relationship was found at no-trout sites where algal biomass was much lower. These results support a role for both bottom-up and top-down processes in controlling the structure of the stream communities studied, but indicate that predatory fish and forest cover had largely independent effects. 相似文献

We studied the relative importance of spatial and environmental factors as determinants of algal, bryophyte, and macroinvertebrate metacommunities in two boreal drainage basins differing in spatial extent. We used eigenfunction spatial analysis to model the spatial relationships among sites and distance‐based redundancy analysis to partition the variability in biotic communities between the spatial filters generated through spatial eigenfunction analysis and the environmental factors measured in the field. In the smaller study area, each metacommunity was structured mostly by environmental factors. This was evidenced by the fact that either the pure environmental effect was significant or environmental factors were strongly spatially structured. In the larger study area, only pure environmental effects were significant. These findings suggest that the environmental control prevails in boreal headwater streams. However, our findings also suggest that the specific details of the community‐environment and community–space relationships are dependent on the focal organism group and drainage basin. 相似文献

Fish size and habitat depth relationships in headwater streams 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary Surveys of 262 pools in 3 small streams in eastern Tennessee demonstrated a strong positive relationship between pool depth and the size of the largest fish within a pool (P<0.001). Similarly, the largest colonizers of newly-created deep pools were larger than the colonizers of shallow pools. We explored the role of predation risk in contributing to the bigger fish — deeper habitat pattern, which has been noted by others, by conducting five manipulative field experiments in two streams. Three experiments used stoneroller minnows (Campostoma anomalum); one used creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus); and one used striped shiners (Notropis chrysocephalus). The stoneroller experiments showed that survival of fish approximately 100 mm in total length (TL) was much lower in shallow pools (10 cm deep) than in deep (40 cm maximum) pools (19% versus 80% survival over 12 d in one experiment) and added cover markedly increased stoneroller survival in shallow pools (from 49% to 96% in an 11-d experiment). The creek chub experiment showed that, as for stonerollers, pool depth markedly influenced survival: the chubs survived an average of 4.9 d in shallow pools and >10.8 d in deep pools. In the striped shiner experiment in shallow artificial streamside troughs, no individuals 75–100 mm TL survived as long as 13 d, where-as smaller (20–25 mm) fish had 100% survival over 13 d. The results of the experiments show that predation risk from wading/diving animals (e.g., herons and raccoons) is much higher for larger fishes in shallow water than for these fishes in deeper water or for smaller fish in shallow water. We discuss the role of predation risk from two sources (piscivorous fish, which are more effective in deeper habitats, and diving/wading predators, which are more effective in shallow habitats) in contributing to the bigger fish — deeper habitat pattern in streams. 相似文献

1. Amphibians are recognized both for their sensitivity to environmental perturbations and for their usefulness as cost-effective biometrics of ecosystem integrity (=system health).
2. Twenty-three years of research in headwater streams in the Klamath-Siskiyou and North Coast Bioregions of the Pacific Northwest, U.S.A., showed distinct patterns in the distribution of amphibians to variations in water temperature, % fine sediments and the amount of large woody debris (LWD).
3. Here, we review seven studies that demonstrate connections between species presence and abundance and these three in-stream variables. These data were then used to calculate realized niches for three species, the southern torrent salamander, the larval coastal tailed frog and the larval coastal giant salamander, relative to two of these environmental stressors (water temperature and % fine sediments). Moreover, multivariate generalized additive models were used to predict the presence of these three amphibians when these three stressors act in concert.
4. Stream-dwelling amphibians are shown to be extremely sensitive to changes in water temperature, amounts of fine sediment and LWD, and specific thresholds and ranges for a spectrum of animal responses can be used to manage for headwater tributary ecosystem integrity.
5. Consequently, amphibians can provide a direct metric of stream ecosystem integrity acting as surrogates for the ability of a stream network to support other stream-associated biota, such as salmonids, and their related ecological services. 相似文献

1. Studies of North American streams have shown that hydraulic parameters and stream geomorphology can explain unionid mussel abundance at both the reach and catchment scale. However, few studies have examined applicability of hydrogeomorphic variables across broader spatial scales, such as across whole catchments, or have elucidated conditions under which spates can affect mussel populations in streams. 2. We quantified freshwater mussel abundance and species richness and their physical habitat at 24 sites in eight streams in southern Appalachian catchments in 2000 and 2001. In addition, we modelled site‐specific hydraulic parameters during summer baseflow and bankfull stages to estimate high‐ and low‐discharge conditions, respectively. 3. Mussel abundance was related to stream geomorphology, whereas richness was related to stream size. Baseflow habitat parameters explained only minor variation in abundance or richness, and both measures were highly correlated with mean current velocity or stream size. Bankfull shear stress composed a relatively low proportion of overall mussel habitat variability, but it accounted for significant variation in abundance and richness. 4. Mussel abundance was highly variable at sites subject to low‐shear stress during spates, whereas abundance always was low at sites subject to high‐shear stress. These data suggest that habitat conditions during floods, rather than those at summer baseflow, limit the abundance of mussels in Appalachian streams. These data also suggest that mussel abundance and assemblage structure may be sensitive to any changes in channel geomorphology and hydraulic conditions that might result from land use in the catchment. 相似文献

Three channel reaches with different habitat characteristics were selected to test the variability in community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates by comparing the relative abundance of functional feeding groups among the reaches. The important factors influencing the spatial and temporal organization of community structure were explored using nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS). The habitat characteristics in the reaches were different in terms of habitat type, hydrological factors, and substrate composition. The first headwater reach was classified as a step-pool reach with similar relative areas of riffle and pool habitats. The second mid-reach and the third down reach had greater areas of pool habitat followed by runs and riffles whose proportions were similar between the latter two reaches. The relative abundances of functional feeding groups were different among the surveyed reaches. Gammarid shredders predominated in the upper reach, and chironomid collector–gatherers and collector–filterers were in greater abundance in the two lower reaches. The proportions of gammarids were minor in the mid and downstream reaches. NMS ordination indicated that the proportion of substrates < 8 mm, discharge, and water depth mainly determined the spatial and temporal distribution of samples based on the macroinvertebrate community in the study reaches. These results suggest that different habitat characteristics result in a distinct community structure in each reach. 相似文献

Secondary production of chironomid communities in insecticide-treated and untreated headwater streams 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
SUMMARY.
- 1 Production of chironomid communities of three first order, Appalachian Mountain streams was estimated and the effects of an insecticide-induced disturbance on chironomid production was examined.
- 2 Annual production of non-Tanypodinae chironomids in the streams during the first study year (no treatment) ranged from 1366 to 3636 mg m?2, while production of Tanypodinae chironomids ranged from 48 to 116 mg m ?2. Production/biomass ratios ranged between 19 and 23 for non-Tanypodinae and from 6 to 7 for Tanypodinae chironomids.
- 3 Insecticide applications resulted in significantly lower chironomid densities and biomass in the treated stream relative to the pretreatment year and reference stream. Annual production of non-Tanypodinae (703 mg m?2) and Tanypodinae (32 mg m ?2) chironomids in the treated stream decreased by 64% and 67%, respectively, compared with the pretreatment year. In contrast, production of non-Tanypodinae (2084 mg m?2) increased by 34% and production of Tanypodinae (96 mg m?2) by 57% in the reference stream.

1. The organic matter dynamics of streams dominated by herbs and grass on their banks are poorly understood, despite the fact that such streams are common worldwide. Further, herbs and grasses can provide large quantities of detritus to stream food webs, and particularly small streams can be heavily shaded by overhanging vegetation, perhaps limiting in‐stream primary production. 2. We quantified the standing crop of edge vegetation and associated macroinvertebrate communities along three headwater streams with herbaceous and grass riparian vegetation on agricultural land in the Piedmont of Maryland, U.S.A., measured the decomposition of four common species of herbs and grasses using experimental leaf packs, and removed edge vegetation experimentally to determine the effect of shading on benthic algal production. 3. Large standing crops of plant material (average range: 68–276 g ash‐free dry mass per m−2), composed largely of monocotyledons, were found at all three study streams. These values are similar to those for coarse particulate organic matter in deciduous forested streams in the eastern U.S.A. In addition, diverse assemblages of shredding macroinvertebrates were observed at all three study sites. 4. Decomposition of the herbs was faster than that of the grasses, and both decomposed faster than most deciduous tree leaf litter. The decomposition rates of the herbs and grasses were significantly related to leaf quality as measured by leaf nitrogen content. Macroinvertebrate shredders colonized all experimental leaf packs, and the colonization of the herbs was faster than that of the grasses. 5. The accrual of chlorophyll‐a after the removal of shading vegetation was faster than that measured prior to removal as well as that in an unmanipulated control reach. 6. Given that the standing crop of organic matter in streams with herbs and grass along their banks was similar to that in forested streams, that the organic matter was rich in nitrogen and used by detritivores, and riparian shading limited algal growth, we suggest that herbaceous and grass plant material may be an important allochthonous food resource in such systems. 相似文献

1. Aquatic predators may influence drift periodicity either directly or indirectly (by non‐consumptive effects involving chemical cues). We took drift samples (eight successive 3‐h sampling intervals over a 24‐h period) on five dates (September 2007, March, April, June and August 2008). Samples were taken at three sites (one site with trout throughout the year, two sites without trout but with fire salamander larvae as top predators from April to August, but without vertebrate predators during the rest of the year) in a stream near Vienna, Austria, to examine the effects of predators on drift periodicity. 2. Of 45 331 specimens caught, the most abundant taxa were Ephemeroptera (32.3%; mainly Baetidae), Diptera (21.5%; mainly Chironomidae), Amphipoda (17.4%; all Gammarus fossarum), Plecoptera (5.4%), Coleoptera (3.5%) and Trichoptera (1.2%). For more detailed analyses, we chose Ephemeroptera (Baetidae; n = 13 457) and Amphipoda (G. fossarum; n = 7888), which were numerous on all sampling dates. 3. The number of drifting baetids and amphipods, as well as total drift density, was generally higher at night than by day, although without predators these differences were significant for Gammaridae but not for Baetidae. 4. When broken down to size classes, night–day drift ratios generally were not significantly different from equality in all size classes of baetids when larval fire salamanders and trout were absent. When predators were present, however, baetid drift density was usually higher at night, except in the smallest and largest size classes. In all size classes of G. fossarum, drift density was usually higher at night, whether with or without the top predators. 5. Although we could study predator effects on drift periodicity at three sites on only a single stream, it seems that non‐consumptive effects may affect Baetidae. Salamander larvae, most probably via kairomones, induced a shift towards mainly nocturnal drift, which could be interpreted as predator avoidance. 相似文献
