Summary The genetics of submergence tolerance in rice was studied in a 10 × 10 half-diallel cross set involving 10 lowland rice varieties, four of which were tolerant (FR13A, FR43B, Kurkaruppan, and Goda Heenati) and the remaining six were nontolerant (RD19, IR42, IR17494-32-1, IR19672-24-3, Jagannath, and CR1009). Estimates of genetic parameters following Hayman's method showed significant additive and nonadditive gene action and the latter appeared to be solely due to dominance. Narrow sense heritability (0.70) indicated that additive gene effects were more important in the inheritance of the trait. Tolerance was dominant over nontolerance and the average dominance was within the range of incomplete dominance. Dominant alleles were more concentrated in the three tolerant parents, FR13A, Kurkaruppan, and FR43B in that order. Wr/Vr graphic analysis suggested the involvement of both major and minor genes. Combining ability analysis by Griffing's method also indicated significance of both additive and nonadditive effects, and the former appeared to be more important than the latter. The hybrids involving FR13A with RD19, IR42, and IR17494-32-1, and those of Kurkaruppan with RD19 and CR1009 appeared to be promising for incorporating an adequate level of tolerance to submergence into lowland rice cultivars.  相似文献

Regenerative potential of the calli of nineteen genotypes of Avena sativa, Avena nuda, Avena byzantina and one interspecific hybrid were compared over three successive cultures. Highly significant genotype and genotype × subculture interactions were observed. Among the highest plant regenerable genotypes were Corbit (first subculture); GAF/Park and 88Ab3073 (second subculture); and GAF/Park and 87Ab5932 (third subculture). These genotypes regenerated on an average 10 to 17 plants each from a 200 mg callus mass after a 30 to 45 proliferation period. GAF/Park, a progeny of an interspecific cross, regenerated plants at a significantly higher level (11.85 plants/rep), followed by the similarly performing A. sativa (6.23 plants) and A. nuda (5.06 plants) genotypes, which were significantly higher than the A. byzantina genotypes (2.07 plants). Four genotypes were tested for their adaptability to suspension culture and plant regeneration potential by separating their cells and cell clusters into two sizes: larger and smaller than 3 mm. Larger clusters yielded plants for three genotypes GAF/Park, 88Ab3073, and Tibor. The smaller clusters only regenerated plants for GAF/Park and 88Ab3073. From one gram of callus used to initiate suspensions of GAF/Park and 88Ab3073, 119.9 and 18.8 plants, respectively, were regenerated. The plants regenerated for various genotypes from agar-solidified or suspension culture experiments had normal growth and seed set. This study confirms high and sustained regenerative capabilities of GAF/Park, a restricted genotype due to the weedy Avena fatua genetic background and identifies alternative genotypes, especially 88Ab3073 for future tissue culture and transformation studies.  相似文献

In the present study, fungal flora of the uncolonized mud flats of Kuwait is investigated. Known isolation techniques, based on different concepts, are used in a trial to distinguish between species present in the active vegetative phase and others existing in the dormant spore phase.According to the frequency of isolation, the fungi reported are classified into four groups showing different existence patterns. Group A fungi; comprised species that most probably occur in the active vegetative phase. Species assigned to this group are: Fusarium oxysporum, Acremonium strictum, Penicillium frequentans A. terricola, Mucor cricinelloides, Rhizopus arrhizus, Stachybotrys atra and Trichoderma koningii. Fungi of group B occur partly in the active vegetative phase and partly in the dormant spore phase whilst members of groups C & D most likely exist only in the spore phase. Reasons for these trends are suggested.  相似文献

Summary Crude protein extracts from single seeds of nondomesticated Mexican bean accessions were analysed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for variability in phaseolin protein. Six new phaseolin types; M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, which contained polypeptides within the same range of molecular weights (51,000 to 45,000 daltons) as occur in the S, T and C phaseolin types of cultivated beans were identified. No T and C types were found among the non-domesticated Mexican accessions, and the S type occurred in less than 7% of the seeds screened. Genetic analyses of F2 progenies from crosses between Sanilac (S), and five of the M types showed that each M phaseolin phenotype was allelic to the S type and expressed codominantly.  相似文献

Summary Aluminum toxicity limits root growth in acid subsoils that are difficult to lime. An alternative to subsoil liming is the development of plants having greater tolerance to Al. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is considered an Al-susceptible species. Preliminary studies indicated that alfalfa cultivars differ in Al tolerance, but the extreme plant-to-plant variation within cultivars prevented the establishment of clearcut cultivar differences.Tolerant and susceptible plants were selected from each of six cultivars (DuPuits, Atlantic, Team, Buffalo, Grimm, and Sirsa 9) grown on an Al-toxic Bladen soil at pH 4.1 to 4.3. The tolerant selections were repotted and interpollinated to form one population of polycross seed. Susceptible selections were treated similarly to form a second population. These two populations, tolerant and susceptible, were subjected to an additional cycle of recurrent phenotypic selection for tolerance and susceptibility, respectively, to Al-toxic Bladen soil at pH 4.6.Plants from the population selected for tolerance to the acid Bladen soil were significantly higher in both root and top vigor on Al-toxic Tatum soil than plants from the population selected for susceptibility. The results indicated that Al tolerance is a heritable trait in these alfalfa populations and that recurrent selection can be used effectively to develop strains having differential tolerance to Al-toxic soils. The observation that only 2% of the plants from the tolerant population were in the most tolerant class suggests a good opportunity for more progress in selecting toward Al tolerance.  相似文献

sThe hydrolysis of several esters catalyzed by lipase of Candida rugosa was used to analyse the interaction between the ester substrate and the active site and the geometry and steric restrictions of alk, ar and h subsites. Using 4-R-C H -CH(R)-COOEt and ethyl trans-cinnamate, the presence of a low electronic density zone in the ar pocket is described, the dimensions of the pocket produced by Phe-296 and Leu-297 in the alk subsite and the size of the h subsite are described.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of resistance to brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stol.), of 20 rice cultivars was studied. Single dominant genes that are allelic to Bph 3 condition the resistance in cultivars Ptb 19, Gangala (Acc. 7733), Gangala (Acc. 15207), Horana Mawee, Kuruhondarwala, Mudu Kiriyal and Muthumanikam. Single recessive genes that are allelic to bph 4 govern the resistance in cultivars Gambada Samba, Heenhoranamawee, Hotel Samba, Kahata Samba, Kalukuruwee, Lekam Samba, Senawee, Sulai, Thirissa and Vellai Illankali. The resistance in Ptb 33, Sudu Hondarwala, and Sinna Sivappu is governed by one dominant and one recessive gene which segregate independently of each other. The dominant resistance genes in these cultivars appear allelic to either Bph 1 or Bph 3. Similarly, the recessive genes in these cultivars seem allelic to either bph 2 or bph 4. Further investigations are needed to conclusively determine the allelic relationships of resistance genes in Ptb 33, Sudu Hondarwala and Sinna Sivappu.  相似文献

Summary Genetic diversity among ten varieties of spring wheat used as parents in a diallel cross was assessed through multivariate analysis (D2-statistics) and then related to heterosis and SCA effects of their hybrids. The parents fell into three groups. Group I contained the varieties, Nobre, Girua and Carazinho; group II contained Sonalika, Lyallpur and Pitic 62 and group III contained Indus 66, Balaka, Sonora 64rs and MSl. The varieties of group I were good general combiners, while the varieties of group III were poor combiners. Significant heterotic and SCA effects for yield and yield components were observed in the hybrids of the parents belonging to different groups but not in the same group. Genetic divergence between the parents had a positive relationship with heterosis and SCA effects of the hybrids.  相似文献

Summary An exotic Zea mays L. population (Tuxpeno) was adapted to North Carolina conditions by first introducing genes for adaptability from two North Carolina varieties ([(Jarvis X Indian Chief)Tuxpeno]Tuxpeno) including four generations of intermating, and then selecting for adaptability using maturity as the primary measure. The study evaluated selection for adaptability and the diversity available between adapted Tuxpeno and the local varieties, Jarvis and Indian Chief. Analytical procedures were developed to quantify the diversity between populations and the complementation of local varieties by introduced germ plasms. The analyses utilized the specific effects available from the diallel mating design.Three replicate selections responded similarly under simple recurrent mass selection (1/10) for the earliest disease-free plants initially and additionally for plant types (primarily height) in the final generation. The 1/4 local germ plasm permitted rapid adaptation of Tuxpeno gene pool to local conditions. The adapted Tuxpeno populations yielded similarly to the local populations with an average heterosis for grain yield of 28% when crossed to the local populations used as source of genes for adaptability. The diversity found between adapted Tuxpeno lines and these local varieties based on genes affecting grain yield was 1.5 to 2.5 times that measured between the local varieties (Jarvis and Indian Chief). Diversity lost through intergradation with local material was a reasonable investment. Yield genes introduced from Tuxpeno complemented local gene pools through nonadditive, primarily dominance-associated, gene effects. Reassortment of major gene blocks apparently occurred leading to significant divergence among replicate selections involving both additive-associated and dominance-associated gene effects.Paper No. 6355 of the North Carolina Agri. Summary Thirteen spontaneously occurring chlorophyll deficient phenotypes have been described and their genetic basis was established. Ten of these — white, white tipped green, patchy white, white virescent, white striping 1, white striping 2, white striping 4, fine striping, chlorina and yellow virescent showed monogenic recessive inheritance and the remaining three — yellow striping, yellow green and light green seedling phenotypes showed digenic recessive inheritance. The genes for (i) white tipped green (wr) and yellow virescent (yv) and (ii) patchy white (pw) and white striping 1 (wst 1) showed independent assortment. Further, the genes for white (w), white tipped green (wr) and yellow virescent (yv) were inherited independently of the gene for hairy leaf margin (Hm).In the mutants — white tipped green, patchy white, white striping 1, white striping 2, fine striping, chlorina, yellow virescent, yellow striping, yellow green and light green phenotypes total quantity of chlorophyll was significantly less than that in the corresponding controls, while in white virescent there was no reduction in the mature stage. For nine of the mutants the quantity of chlorophyll was also estimated in F1's (mutant x control green). In F1's of six of the mutants — white tip, patchy white, chlorina, yellow virescent, fine striping and yellow striping the quantity of chlorophyll was almost equal to the wild type. In the F1's of three of the mutants — white striping 1, white striping 2 and light green an intermediate value between the mutant and wild types was observed. In yellow virescent retarded synthesis of chlorophyll, particularly chlorophyll a was observed in the juvenile stage. Reduced quantity of chlorophyll was associated with defective chloroplasts. In the mutants — white tipped green, white virescent, fine striping, chlorina, yellow striping, yellow green and light green defective plastids were also observed. In patchy white secondary destruction of chlorophylls and the presence of defective plastids were found to be associated with reduced chlorophyll quantity at maturity.Paper chromatographic studies of leaf flavonoids revealed some variation between the inbreds, but there were three common spots, 7, 8 and 9, except for PDP in which the spot 8 was absent. Chlorophyll deficient mutants differed from their respective controls in the absence of one or more of the spots present in the controls and in the presence of new spots in some of the mutants. Most of the chlorophyll mutants showed higher survival rate in the Kharif season than in Rabi season which was attributed to the higher mean day temperature and longer day light period in the Kharif season than in Rabi season.  相似文献

The relationship of abscisic acid (ABA) and 2-trans-abscisic acid (t-ABA) to alternate bearing has been examined in Wilking mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) trees. Leaves, stems and buds of trees loaded with fruit (on trees) had 4.3, 6.0 and 2.2 fold higher ABA levels than the corresponding organs from off trees. Leaves had higher ABA levels than stems and buds in both on and off trees. t-ABA was non-detectable in Wilking leaf, stem and bud tissue. Amounts of t-ABA not exceeding 40% of the ABA content, were found in Shamouti and Valencia orange buds and in Wilking fruit peel. The elevated levels of ABA in on tree organs may reflect a stress imposed by the fruit overload.  相似文献

Phoma tracheiphila is the causative agent of the disease mal secco. Citrus cultivars differ substantially in respect to their sensitivity to the pathogenP. tracheiphila and its toxin. Some cultivars (e.g., Femminello lemon) are inherently sensitive while others (e.g., Tarocco orange) are tolerant. Cell lines derived from nucellar tissue of Femminello, Tarocco and a cell line selected for tolerance to the fungal toxin (Femminello-S) were used to study host-pathogen interaction. Our results showed that calli or conditioned media of Tarocco and Femminello-S inhibited the size of co-cultivated fungal colonies when compared to Femminello. In addition, conditioned medium of Tarocco as well as FemminelloS, but not Femminello, promoted bursting of hyphal tips. A ten-fold increase in chitinase and glucanase enzymatic activity, as evaluated by radiometric assay and laminarin hydrolysis respectively, was detected in Femminello-S extracellular extracts as compared to Femminello. An increase in chitinase was also shown by immunoblot analysis. Our findings suggest a positive correlation between the presence of chitinase and glucanase in the conditioned media of the cultured cells and the tolerance of those cells toP. tracheiphila toxin.  相似文献

DNA-degrading enzymes of 24.0 kDa and 27.0 kDa were observed to have different activities in two common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, Wichita and Cheyenne. A substrate-based SDS-PAGE assay revealed that these two enzymes were much more active in Wichita than in Cheyenne. Genes controlling the activities of these two enzymes were localized on chromosome 2D by testing DNA-degrading activities in reciprocal chromosome substitution lines between Wichita and Cheyenne. While the allele on Wichita chromosome 2D stimulated the activities of the 24.0- and 27.0-kDa enzymes in Cheyenne, the allele on Cheyenne chromosome 2D did not reduce the activities of the 24-kDa and 27-kDa enzymes in Wichita. Whether these genes code for the DNA-degrading enzymes themselves or for factors that regulate the enzyme activities remains unknown. This work was supported in part by USDA-Competitive Research Grants Office grant No. 90-37140-5426 to P.S.B. The effect of salmon carcasses on the growth of a freshwater amphipod, Jesogammarus jesoensis (Schellenberg) (Gammaridea, Anisogammaridae), was examined experimentally. Growth rate was determined by rearing juvenile amphipods in four food treatments (leaves, salmon, leaves and salmon and leaves with salmon leachate) for 20days. Mass loss and oxygen consumption of the leaves were also measured in the three treatments with leaves. The oxygen consumption rate of leaves was lower in the leaves treatment than in either the leaves and salmon or leaves with salmon leachate treatments, indicating that microbial activity on leaves was enhanced by the presence of salmon carcasses. Mass loss of leaves did not differ between the three treatments with leaves. The growth rate of the amphipods did not differ between the leaves and salmon treatments, or between the leaves and salmon and leaves with salmon leachate treatments. Growth rates in the two latter treatments were higher than rates in the leaves treatment, but not higher than the rates in the salmon treatment. Therefore, it appears likely that consuming leaves fertilized with nutrients from salmon carcasses facilitates growth in this amphipod.  相似文献

Summary When millet was grown in short-term pot experiments in the greenhouse, in the red-clay and sand-veld soils of Southern Rhodesia and the red clay loams of Uganda, a very close correlation was obtained between labile soil phosphorus and the aluminium- and iron-bound phosphate in these soils. A large increase in labile soil phosphorus was obtained when millet was grown in Uganda soils that had been stored in the air-dry condition for 15 weeks, and a greater increase after 24 weeks. The increase is attributed to the mineralisation of soil organic phosphorus. The maximum temperature used to dry the soils had no effect on the labile soil phosphorus values obtained.  相似文献

Summary The establishment and development of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi were studied in three cultivars of potato, which differed in susceptibility to Late blight, in a field experiment on a lateritic sandy-loam during two growing seasons (1980 and 1981). The cultivars SSC 1174 (highly resistant) and Kufri Jyoti (resistant) showed an earlier establishment and more rapid development of VAM fungi than up-to-date (highly susceptible). The first mycorrhizal infection in both SSC 1174 and Kufri Jyoti was observed after 12 days in 1980 and 8 days in 1981, whereas in up-to-date it was observed after 19 and 12 days respectively. The mycorrhizal infection increased with the age of the plants in all the three cultivars.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of resistance to whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) was studied in 21 rice varieties. Reactions of F1; F2 and F3 progenies of the crosses of 21 resistant varieties with the susceptible variety TN 1 revealed that a single dominant gene governs resistance in Mushkan 41, Santhi, Siahnakidar 195, SM2-34, Tirisurkh 251, Zirijowaian 245, 18, 24A, 39, 76 S, 78, 180, 213 B, 267, 293, CI 6037-4, NP97, S39 JKW and Bansphul. In varieties 65 and 274 A, resistance is governed by one dominant and one recessive gene which segregate independently of each other. Tests for allelism with the Wbph 1 gene originally identified in N 22 revealed that the dominant gene present in all the test varieties is the same as Wbph 1. Further studies are required to determine the allelic relationships of the recessive gene found in varieties 65 and 274 A.  相似文献

The inheritance of host plant resistance and its effect on the relative infection efficiency for leaf blast was studied in the crosses IR36/CO39 (partially resistant × highly susceptible) and IR36/IR64 (both partially resistant). On the natural scale, gene action appeared multiplicative. After log transformation, additive effects described most of the genetic variation in the cross IR36/CO39, while additive and dominance effects were about equal in magnitude in the cross IR36/IR64. Dominance was towards increased resistance. No transgressive segregation occurred in the cross IR36/CO39. The number of genes that reduce lesion number was estimated to be zero in CO39 and five or more in IR36. The cross IR36/IR64 showed transgressive segregation in both directions, and IR36 and IR64 each contain at least one gene that is not present in the other cultivar. The heritabilities (narrow sense) in the F2 were low (range 0.06–0.16), while narrow sense heritabilities based on F3 lines were much higher (range 0.41–0.68). Lesion numbers in F3 lines were reasonably correlated with those in F5 progenies derived from the same F2 plant (r was±0.6 in both crosses). Partial resistance can be effectively improved by selecting the most resistant plants from the most resistant F3 lines.  相似文献

Summary The zymogram phenotypes that Chinese Spring-Imperial, Holdfast-King II and Kharkov-Dakold wheat-rye addition lines presented for esterase isozymes were determined using polyacrylamide gel ectrophoresis. The analyses were carried out with different parts of the dry kernel, namely embryo plus scutellum and endosperm, leaves and roots. In all cases, embryo plus scutellum, endosperm and leaf presented different patterns of esterases. The patterns of leaves and roots were the same. Results indicate that rye esterases exist as monomers and dimers. Dimeric esterases are controlled by one locus located on the 3R chromosomes of Imperial, King II and Dakold rye cultivars. Five loci involved in the production of monomeric esterases have been located on the 6R chromosomes of these cultivars, specifically on the long arm of the King II 6R chromosome. On the basis of these results, considerations concerning chromosome homoeology and homology are made.  相似文献

Summary Restriction fragment length polymorphisms of chloroplast (ct), mitochondrial (mt) and nuclear DNA were investigated using eight cultivars of Oryza sativa and two cultivars of O. glaberrima. Relative variability in the nuclear and cytoplasmic genomes was estimated by a common measure, genetic distance. Based on the average genetic distances among ten cultivars for each genome, the evolutionary variabilities of the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes were found to be almost the same, whereas the variability of the chloroplast genome was less than half that of the other two genomes. Cluster analyses on ct and mt DNA variations revealed that chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes were conservative within a taxon and that their differentiations were well-paralleled with respect to each other. For nuclear DNA variation, an array of different degrees of differentiation was observed in O. sativa, in contrast with little variation in O. glaberrima. As a whole, differentiation between O. sativa and O. glaberrima was clearly observed in all three genomes. In O. sativa, no notable difference was found between the cultivars Japonica and Javanica, whereas a large differentiation was noticed between Japonica (including Javanica) and Indica. In all three genomes, the average genetic distances within Indica were much larger than those within Japonica (including Javanica), and almost similar between Japonica (including Javanica) and Indica. These facts indicate that differentiation in O. sativa was due mainly to Indica.  相似文献
