The densities of alkali fly larvae and pupae were measured in relation to depth and substrate type at six locations around Mono Lake. Samples representing a mixture of different bottom features were taken to a depth of 10 m (33 ft) using SCUBA. This is at or near the depth limit of fly larvae and pupae. The biomass of larvae and pupae on hard substrate were maximum and approximately equal at depths of 0.5 m and 1 m, substantially lower at intermediate depths of 3 m and 5 m, and over an order of magnitude further reduced at 10 m. Densities of flies on hard or rocky substrates (mainly calcareous tufa deposits), were significantly greater than those found on soft substrates such as mud or sand, at all but the greatest depth surveyed.Bathymetric maps of the areas of hard and soft substrate occurring at different lake depths were used to estimate the fly population size over the whole lake, based on the density distribution of larvae and pupae with depth on different substrates. The mapped areas of soft and hard substrates were also calculated for different lake levels, and applying the same procedure, a population model comparing the abundance of flies at different lake levels was developed. This habitat-based population model predicts that the abundance of the alkali fly is maximized at 6380 ft (1945 m) lake surface elevation. Most of the tufa substrate submerged at this lake level will become exposed and unavailable as habitat as the lake declines to 6370 ft (1942 m). Human development of pond and lake shorelines may significantly impact native lacustrine biota including a variety of aquatic macroinvertebrate groups. In an effort to better understand the habitat associations and sensitivities of lacustrine damselflies (Odonata: Zygoptera), we sampled adults in littoral macrophyte habitat during two flight periods at 35 randomly selected pond and lake sites in southern Maine during 2000 and 2001. Data were also collected to help characterize water body, shoreline disturbance, and aquatic vegetation at each study site. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling was used for ordination of damselfly assemblages, and coordinates from the most stable solution were related to site variables using forward stepwise multiple regression. Our results suggest that the diversity and composition of damselfly assemblages is related to the abundance and richness of littoral zone macrophytes, extent of riparian disturbance, benthic substrate granularity, and lake productivity; all variables subject to anthropogenic degradation on excessively developed waterbodies. Additionally, we developed a Habitat Tolerance Index useful for distinguishing between relative habitat specialists and generalists from among a diverse assemblage of 19 lacustrine species. Finally, species-specific damselfly associations with multiple genera of floating and emergent macrophytes were assessed using both nonparametric correlation and multiplicative regression yielding significant relationships for 17 species, including two damselflies of global conservation concern (Enallagma laterale and E. pictum). We conclude that the protection of littoral and shoreline habitat integrity, with special emphasis on emergent and floating macrophytes, is critical to the conservation of lacustrine biodiversity.  相似文献

The population of Ephydra cinerea was studied during three summers when dissolved solids levels were about 130 g/l. All life stages are present year-round, but there is apparently some coordination of the initial pulse of adult emergence in June. There are probably 1–2 generations per year.Eggs are deposited on the water surface; inputs to three locations were similar. Larvae successfully avoid the large benthic area covered by an anaerobic monimolimnion. They tend to immigrate from substrates where they grow relatively poorly, and to remain on substrates where they grow better. Consequently, larval densities are more than ten times higher on reef and shallow water mud substrates than on sand. This marked spatial specialization in the absence of substrate-specific predators or competitors illustrates the power of habitat quality by itself in determining spatial patterns of abundance in a lake.Experiments showed larval growth on the reef was inversely related to density, and the lake as a whole produced relatively larger flies in a year when larval and pupal densities were relatively low. Yearly production by E. cinerea is roughly 50 g/m2, about 88% of which comes from reefs and shallow water mud areas covering only 18% of the bottom area.Past studies indicate that blue-green algae dominate the lake's benthic flora when salt concentrations are high (due to low lake levels), and diatoms take over when salt concentrations are low. Fly abundance appears to be inversely related to salinity.The lake's present high planktonic primary production is equal to that of eutrophic freshwater lakes, yet it has water clarity more characteristic of an oligotrophic lake. The high water clarity (which makes possible the high benthic production) probably depends on the absence of phytoplankters that can both tolerate the high salinity and avoid being eaten by Artemia salina. Continued dilution of the lake will probably upset this situation and result in reorganization of the lake's energy flow pattern.  相似文献

The life cycle and biological characteristics of the nuisance midge, Hydrobaenus kondoi Sæther were studied in 1989–90 at the middle reaches of the Kiso River, Japan. A study of seasonal abundance of both adults and larvae revealed that the Kiso River population was bivoltine. In laboratory cultures, the species required 840.7 degree-days to complete the life cycle. Larvae built a cocoon in the second instar for aestivation during the high temperatures of summer. The cocoons were found attached to sand grains in shallow water near shore.  相似文献

The community structures of the benthic and weed-bed faunas of Lake Awasa, Ethiopia Rift Valley, are described and related to the various types of substratum present. L. Awasa is non-saline (conductivity 860 µS cm-1), and lies in a shallow basin with maximum depths of 21–22 m. It supports an important commercial fishery mainly based on the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.The large weed beds of the lake extend out to the 4 m. isobath in most places; they consist mainly of the grass Paspalidium geminatum. Below the 6–8 m isobaths the bottom is covered with a deep layer of flocculant mud, with organic matter constituting about one third of the dry weight. No benthic animals are able to colonize this mud. In shallower regions the bottom consists of hard sand covered with a thin layer of organic detritus, except for a narrow region around the 6 m isobath where the sand is covered with a layer of ostracod shells up to 25 cm deep. All this firmer bottom is colonized by a benthic community consisting mainly of cyclopoids, ostracods, Limnodrilus and chironomids; there are no prosobranch or bivalve molluscs. The weed-bed community consists mainly of Cladocera, ostracods, Ephemeroptera, Heteroptera, chironomids and pulmonate molluscs. These communities are compared with those of other Afro-tropical lakes, and are shown to have much in common with that of Lake Chad (Dejoux, 1983), specially the chironomids (Dejoux, 1976) but L. Awasa has fewer species, the most noticeable absentees being the decapod Crustacea.  相似文献

Quantitative (0.1-m2) samples of benthic macrofauna were taken at three depths (5, 10, 17 m) off the eastern coast of Scania, southern Baltic, in the period April 1974 to August 1978. Altogether 20 sampling cruises were made. Spatial and temporal species composition, abundance and biomass were compared. The number of species increased significantly with increasing depth. Zonation of the species was due to their zoogeographical origin and capacity to withstand exposure. Abundance was highest at 5 m depth whereas biomass increased with depth due to the dominance of large bivalves. Variation in abundance within years was large at all three depths and connected with reproductive recruitment for all species except Bathyporeia pilosa Lindström which migrated towards the shore in summer.  相似文献

The solitary bee Osmia lignaria Say continues to be developed as an orchard pollinator in the United States and southern Canada. Female bees are active during the early spring and construct nests consisting of a linear series of unlined cells delimited by mud partitions. Cells are provisioned with a pollen/nectar mass on which an egg is deposited, and nests are sealed with a mud plug. In 1997, we initiated two experiments on the development, mortality, and emergence of O. lignaria at selected laboratory temperature regimes and outdoors. In the first experiment (published previously), we compared temperature treatments for their adequacy in maintaining healthy O. lignaria populations. In a second experiment (reported here), we determined the relationship between rearing temperatures and prepupa-adult development rates as well as emergence time and longevity after wintering and incubation the following spring. We observed important differences in O. lignaria prepupa versus pupa responses to selected temperature treatments. The relationship between temperature and days to pupa was U-shaped, with additional time to transit the prepupa-pupa interval at temperatures above and below 26 degrees C. The negative relationship between temperature and the length of the pupa to adult interval contrasts with the U-shaped thermal response observed for prepupae. Thus, with each increase in thermal heat units over the range of temperature treatments tested, we observed an additional reduction in the pupa-adult interval. Individuals reared at constant 18 degrees C required 2.4 times as many days to transit the pupa-adult interval compared with those at constant 32 degrees C. Our results suggest that there is a need for the development of regionally adapted, latitude-specific breeding populations of this outstanding orchard crop pollinator.  相似文献

Dendrogeomorphological research was conducted along a volcanic caldera lake of Bolsena in central Italy, Latium region, in order to investigate the erosion process that affects its coastline. Most of the trees sampled were black poplars (Populus nigra L.) with root systems differently exposed. The cores taken from trunks show growth stress (suppression) at different times according to the distance of the tree from the shoreline. Results of the morphological analysis of the root systems were used as a qualitative estimate of the erosion process developing an erosion map of the lake's shoreline. The dating of suppressions was used to calculate the main horizontal erosion rate at different shoreline sectors. The most intense erosion was recorded on the southern and northern shore, affected by the strongest and long-lasting winds (mean erosion rate at southern coast=0.092 m/year, northern coast=0.064 m/year, eastern coast=0.049 m/year, western coast=0.028 m/year). The age of the living trees along the shore points out that the erosion started at least in the 1970s (one of the highest lake level episode) and it is still in progress.  相似文献

Summary Highly diverse assemblages of nectivorous bee flies (Diptera: bombyliidae) occur at desert sites in California presenting an opportunity to investigate the ecology of this little-known group. This study compared communities of adult bee flies visiting flowers at two sites, one in the Mojave Desert (Darwin Plateau) and one in the Great Basin (Mono Basin), during periods of higher and lower resource abundance. The range of resources used by single species varied inversely with the number of species present, with the greatest number of species and smallest niche breadths occurring at the Darwin Plateau. Adult bee flies did not visit flower resources at random. Rather the two major divisions of the family exhibited contrasting patterns of specialization on plant species. Results of this study support the hypothesis that resources were limiting for adult bee flies in the period of lower food abundance at the Darwin Plateau and not limiting at the Mono Basin during this study. Bee flies at the Mono Basin exhibited lower densities per flower (despite higher densities per unit area), lower frequency of feeding, a lower degree of specialization, and less pronounced phenological changes than bee flies at the Darwin Plateau. The data suggest that episodes of population regulation in the non-parasitic (i.e. adult) stage, due to short supply of the adults' food, contribute to determining the structure of parasitoid communities.  相似文献

1. This study investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of benthic invertebrate communities located close to the mouths of the Kalambo and Lunzua Rivers, at the southern end of Lake Tanganyika, and subject to varying degrees of sediment load. 2. Metrics of exposure to riverine sediments were associated inversely with abundance and diversity of benthic organisms at sampling locations adjacent to both river mouths, indicating a major effect of riverine sediments on the structure of near‐shore benthic communities. 3. A lower abundance of benthos was found at the mouth of the Lunzua River, which exports significantly higher sediment loads than the Kalambo. 4. Seasonal cycles of abundance and diversity in the benthos varied with distance from river mouths. This has important implications for monitoring programmes investigating benthic communities close to the mouths of rivers. 5. Our findings suggest that recent increases in the sediment loading of Lake Tanganyika, owing to anthropogenic catchment disturbance, impact significantly on biological diversity throughout the lake littoral, which provides habitat for the majority of species in the lake.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of benthic foraminifera are high in intertidal rocky‐shore habitats. However, the availability of food to support their high biomass has been poorly studied in these habitats compared to those at seafloor covered by sediments. Previous field and laboratory observations have suggested that there is diversity in the food preferences and modes of life among rocky‐shore benthic foraminifera. In this study, we used the stable nitrogen isotopic composition of amino acids to estimate the trophic position, trophic niche, and feeding strategy of individual foraminifera species. We also characterized the configuration and structure of the endobiotic microalgae in foraminifera using transmission electron microscopy, and we identified the origin of endobionts based on nucleotide sequences. Our results demonstrated a large variation in the trophic positions of different foraminifera from the same habitat, a reflection of endobiotic features and the different modes of life and food preferences of the foraminifera. Foraminifera did not rely solely on exogenous food sources. Some species effectively used organic matter derived from endobionts in the cell cytoplasm. The high biomass and species density of benthic foraminifera found in intertidal rocky‐shore habitats are thus probably maintained by the use of multiple nitrogen resources and by microhabitat segregation among species as a consequence.  相似文献

Fifty one chironomid species were identified from 504 samples collected at depths ranging 8 to 267 m in Lake Michigan, U.S.A. Heterotrissocladius oliveri Saether occurred in 32% of these samples and had an average abundance of 22 m–2 which was similar to other estimates from the Great Lakes. Maximum average lake-wide density was at 30 to 60 m (41 m–2). At depths 60 m, H. oliveri was the dominant chironomid species comprising 75% of total Chironomidae. The substrate preference of H. oliveri differed within each depth regime considered: at 30–60 m, 2–3 ; at 60–120 m, 3–5 , 7–9 ; and at 120–180 m, 6–8 . Abundance was notably reduced at all depths in substrates characterized as medium silt (5–6 ). On a lake-wide basis, the distribution pattern suggested H. oliveri was most numerous from 30 to 60 m along the southwestern, eastern, and northern shorelines and at 60–120 m depths along the southern and eastern shorelines. Increased abundance in the South Basin was concurrent with evidence of increased sedimentation at 60 to 100 m. However, in several other areas of the lake, high densities were associated with medium to very fine sands relatively free of silts and clays. This observation suggested occurrence of H. oliveri was minimally affected by sediment type.Widely variable, but generally elevated water temperatures likely prevent H. oliveri from establishing a substantial population density at depths < 30 m. With increased depth, temperature fluctuation is negligible and food is more stable, though the source is variable. Factors limiting abundance of H. oliveri at depths 30 m were related to decreased food supply due to distance from shore, food sources of lower value (clays), and, most importantly, to reproductive replenishment.Although still oligotrophic in nature, high density occurrences in both high and low sedimentation areas of the lake suggest the trophic indicator status of H. oliveri might be broader than previously thought.  相似文献

The spatial (distance from the shore) and seasonal (summer-winter) distributions of the ichtyofauna in the littoral zone of Lake Geneva were studied between October 1991 and December 1992. Gill nets were set simultaneously at three different sites of a chosen littoral zone: shore, middle and far (50, 300 and 550 m from the shore, respectively).The results show that in summer more species and individuals are present in the littoral zone than in winter. Throughout the year, species richness is greater at the shore site than at the middle or far site. In summer, total abundance is greater at the far site, whereas there are more fish at the shore site during winter. Perch (juveniles and adults), roach and gudgeon (adults only), have maximum abundance during the summer, while lake trout, grayling and whitefish (adults) have maximum abundance during the winter. For five species (adults only) the site comparison shows spatial segregation of the habitats: greater numbers of perch are present at the far site while roach, tench, lake trout and grayling prefer the shore site.  相似文献

Lake Lenore is a highly productive alkaline lake in the Lower Grand Coulee, Central Washington. Leakage of freshwater from nearby irrigation projects decreased the lake salinity from about 17 to 1.5 g/l during 1950–75. The initial bottom fauna with mass occurrence of single halobiontic chironomid species was supplanted by more diverse communities at all depths. The species richness increased by 2–8 times. The greatest addition of new species was found in the salinity range of 2–3 g/l. Concurrent increases in abundance and biomass suggest that the carrying capacity of the lake at higher salinities was not fully utilized by the benthos. A comparison with other eutrophic saline lakes indicates that benthic species composition and quantity is correlated with total salinity and ion composition.  相似文献

Synopsis Pelagic larvae and juveniles of the genusSebastes are widely distributed in the continental shelf and slope waters of subarctic to temperate oceans, with greatest abundance in the Northern Hemisphere. We review the ecology and distribution of these planktonic and micronektonic life stages in relation to oceanographic conditions. Special attention is paid to the west coast of North America, where abundance of larvae from samples collected during 1951–1981 is described. After transformation, the pelagic juveniles are widely distributed, often at great distances from benthic adult habitats. These stages are most frequently distributed in either midwater or near-surface habitats; this dichotomy may require different strategies for successful recruitment.  相似文献

(1) Chaoborus anomalus and Chaoborus ceratopogones were found together throughout the year in Lake George, Uganda, the larvae forming 65-85% by number of the macro-benthos of the central lake area. (2) First and second instar larvae were wholly planktonic and third and fourth instar larvae mainly benthic during the day, migrating into the water column at night. A proportion of the third and fourth instar larvae were found in the water column during the day in the centre of the lake where light attenuation was greatest. C. anomalus showed a greater tendency to be benthic than C. ceratopogones. (3) Planktonic larvae were distributed in dense patches thought to be cohorts resulting from oviposition by swarms of adult females. The maximum density of planktonic larvae recorded was 31.7 × 102/m2 column. Third and fourth instar larvae were more evenly distributed in the benthos of the central lake area, the maximum density recorded was 79.9×102/m2. (4) First and second instar larvae occurred mainly in the inshore regions, very few were found in the centre of the lake. Oviposition is likely to take place inshore. The patches of planktonic larvae were not stationary. Dispersal of larvae away from the shore may be active or may result from complex oscillations of the water mass produced by storms. In C. ceratopogones the floating egg batches could he carried away from the north shore by currents produced by inflows and prevailing winds. (5) Adults of C. ceratopogones were more numerous during the rainy seasons than during the dry seasons. A similar, though less marked seasonality was found in the occurrence of C. anomalus adults. The biomass of benthic larvae of C. ceratopo-gones was estimated at 387.0 mg C/m2 in the dry season, June 1970, and 130 0 mg C/m2 in the rainy season, October 1970. That of C. anomalus was constant at 241.7 and 254.3 mg C/m2 in June and October, 1970 respectively. (6) No difference was found in the horizontal distribution of the larvae, or in the size and weight attained by the various stages. (7) Interspecific differences were found in the mean number of eggs per adult female (309, C. anomalus and 224, C. ceratopogones); in the nature ofthe egg batches; n i the morphology of the larval mouthparts and pharyngeal sphincters, as well as i n the vertical distribution of the larvae and seasonal occurrence of the adults. On the basis of these differences the co-existing species are thought not to be competing for the same resources.  相似文献

Mono Lake is a closed lake located in central California, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It contains dissolved carbonates, sulfates and chlorides at high concentrations. Due to its high salinity, Mono Lake was sometimes compared to the Dead Sea. However, it appears that Mono Lake water and vicinity abound with life. In this work, the fungal flora living in this extreme ecosystem was studied for the first time. Soil, tufa, water and sediment samples were also analyzed for their mineral and salt composition. Results showed that water was particularly rich in sodium, potassium, phosphorus and boron. Soil and sediments contained very high levels of calcium and magnesium, but also barium, boron and strontium. Sodium, phosphorus and iron levels varied in a large extent from one to another sample. Neutral to very alkaline pH were recorded. Water samples were found sterile in the conditions chosen for fungi isolation, while sediment, soil and tufa samples led to the isolation of a total of 67 fungal species (from 23 samples), belonging to various taxonomic groups. From our results no clear effects of the chemical parameters of the samples were observed on fungal life apart from the pH. The methods chosen did not allow the isolation of extremely halotolerant species. We isolated in this work a series of ubiquitous species, suggesting that a selection of resistant and/or adaptable strains of some common species could have occurred. Depending on the medium and the temperature of isolation, it can be hypothesized that some species were present as dormant structures, while some others, isolated at pH 8 on a medium enriched in Na and Ca, could be in a growing form adapted to alkaline and saline conditions. This work contributes to a better knowledge of the mycobiota present in the Mono Lake's ecosystem.  相似文献

The zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha was introduced to North America during the mid-1980s, and is now a dominant member of many benthic communities in the lower Great Lakes. In this study, I explored the abundance, biomass, size structure and settlement of Dreissena inhabiting rocks along a wave-swept disturbance gradient near Middle Sister Island in western Lake Erie. Ten rocks were collected from quadrats at six sites along each of three transect lines oriented perpendicular to shore. Occurrence, abundance and biomass of Dreissena on smaller, movable rocks were positively associated with rock distance from shore (lake depth) and with rock area; rocks at nearshore sites supported little, if any, Dreissena, whereas those at offshore sites were heavily colonized. Mussel size distributions also differed in relation to shore distance. Large mussels (19 mm) were underrepresented or absent on rocks collected at nearshore sites, but were overrepresented at offshore locations (37 m). Settlement of larval mussels on settling pads was positively correlated with distance offshore and with time of exposure, though settlement was substantial even at a nearshore (10 m) location. Area-adjusted mussel dry mass increased more rapidly with distance offshore on large than on small rocks. Large rocks also required more force to displace and were significantly less likely to be disturbed when transplanted at the study site. Results from this study indicate that occurrence, abundance and size structure of Dreissena in nearshore waters of Lake Erie correspond with the frequency of habitat disturbance, though other factors including food limitation and larval supply may also contribute to these patterns. These patterns complement studies that established the significance of physical disturbance in other aquatic systems.  相似文献

 Afternoon observations in summer comparing shoreline with inland atmospheric conditions were made during onshore winds at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The onshore wind came from a cool water surface. Mean monthly water temperatures near to shore were between 11 and 11.5° C. The onshore wind brought lower air, ground surface radiant and sky radiant temperatures; lower humidity and greater wind speed. All of these combine to produce a cooler human environment at the shoreline than inland. The relative importance of climatic elements in producing the cooler environment was assessed using sensitivity analyses with eight different human thermal exchange models/indices. Air temperature and wind speed had the greatest effect, followed by ground surface radiant temperature, sky radiant temperature and humidity. The monthly density of the sand fly, Phlebotomus Papatasi Scopoli (Diptera: Psychodidae), was monitored during 2009 at Burg El-Arab, a rural district located close to the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The number of annual generations and the efficacy of microbial control by the entomopathogenic fungus, Metrahizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok (Ma79), were determined in the laboratory under atmospheric conditions, simulating those of the animal shelters in the study area. We used two collecting techniques; CDC light traps and oiled paper traps, to quantify sand fly density inside houses and in the open field. Adult flies exhibited a seasonal range from April to December. The seasonal pattern was bimodal, with one peak in July and the second one in October. Calculations of the correlation coefficient (r) revealed a significant role of temperature and relative humidity in the monthly abundance of the sand flies in the study area. P. papatasi colony completed seven annual generations under semifield conditions, but the mean developmental time of each immature stage and the mean total duration of development from egg to adult for each generation varied according to the prevailing temperature. The longest generation time was observed in winter (the mean ± SD was 118 ± 11.70 d), and the shortest one occurred at the highest temperatures in summer (the mean ± SD was 25.21 ± 2.04 d). In microbial control studies, the entomopathogenic fungus, M. anisopliae, was used at 15 × 10(8) spores/g food as a standard dose against the second-instar larvae of P. papatasi at the different seasons during 2009. Mortality reached 100% in winter and decreased to 56.0% as the prevailing temperature increased during the summer season.  相似文献
