This article presents the results of an experimental activity aimed at investigating the technical feasibility and the environmental performance of using municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash to produce glass frit for ceramic glaze (glaze frit). The process includes an industrial pretreatment of bottom ash that renders the material suitable for use in glaze frit production and allows recovery of aluminum and iron. The environmental performance of this treatment option is assessed with the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The goal of the LCA study is to assess and compare the environmental impacts of two scenarios of end of life of bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI): landfill disposal (conventional scenario) and bottom ash recovery for glaze frit production (innovative scenario). The main results of the laboratory tests, industrial simulations, and LCA study are presented and discussed, and the environmental advantages of recycling versus landfill disposal are highlighted.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope  Management of the medical waste produced in hospitals or health care facilities has raised concerns relating to public health, occupational safety, and the environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a decision-supporting tool in waste management practice; but relatively little research has been done on the evaluation of medical waste treatment from a life cycle perspective. Our study compares the environmental performances of two dominant technologies, hazardous waste incineration (HWI) as a type of incineration technology and steam autoclave sterilization with sanitary landfill (AL) as a type of non-incineration technology, for specific medical waste of average composition. The results of this study could support the medical waste hierarchy. Materials and methods  This study implemented the ISO 14040 standard. Data on steam autoclave sterilization were obtained from an on-site operations report, while inventory models were used for HWI, sanitary landfill, and residues landfill. Background data were from the ecoinvent database. The comparative LCA was carried out for five alternatives: HWI with energy recovery efficiencies of 0%, 15%, and 30% and AL with energy recovery efficiencies of 0% and 10%. Results  The assumptions on the time frame for landfill markedly affect the impact category scores; however, the orders of preference for both time frames are almost the same. HWI with 30% energy recovery efficiency has the lowest environmental impacts for all impact categories, except freshwater ecotoxicity. Incineration and sanitary landfill processes dominate global warming, freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity, and eutrophication of incineration and non-incineration alternatives, respectively. Dioxin emissions contribute about 10% to human toxicity in HWI without energy recovery alternatives, and a perturbation analysis yielded identical results. As regards eutrophication, non-incineration treatments have an approximately sevenfold higher impact than incineration treatments. Discussion  The differences between short-term and long-term time frame assumptions mainly are decided by heavy metals dissolved in the future leachate. The high heat value of medical waste due to high contents of biomass, plastic, and rubber materials and a lower content of ash, results in a preference for incineration treatments. The large eutrophication difference between incineration and non-incineration treatments is caused by different N element transformations. Dioxin emission from HWI is not the most relevant to human toxicity; however, large uncertainties could exist. Conclusions  From a life cycle perspective, the conventional waste hierarchy, implying incineration with energy recovery is better than landfill, also applies to the case of medical waste. The sanitary landfill process is the key issue in non-incineration treatments, and HWI and the subsequent residues landfill processes are key issues in incineration treatments. Recommendations and perspectives  Integrating the medical waste hierarchy and constructing a medical waste framework require broader technologies to be investigated further, based on a life cycle approach. The fine localization of mineral matter in spores of Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus cereus was studied by the technique of microincineration adapted for use with the electron microscope. The specimens, which included intact and thin-sectioned spores as well as shed spore coats, were burned either in the conventional way at high temperature or by a new technique using electrically excited oxygen at nearly room temperature. The ash residues were examined by bright field, dark field, and diffraction in the electron microscope and also with the phase contrast microscope. In some cases, the specimen was previewed in both microscopes before incineration. The results do not support a previous report that the mineral elements of the spore are confined to a peripheral layer, but rather indicate that the spore core as well as the coat are mineral-rich. The cortex may be deficient in minerals, but the possibility of artifact prevents a clear decision on this point. Incinerated B. megaterium spores show a highly ordered fine structure displaying 100 A periodicity in the ash of the middle layer of the coat. The nature of this structure is discussed, as is the technique which demonstrated it. The fine definition of the ash patterns, particularly those obtained with the low-temperature, excited-oxygen technique, suggests that microincineration may be generally useful in the study of fine structure.  相似文献

我国生活垃圾产量大但处理能力不足,产生多种环境危害,对其资源化利用能够缓解环境压力并回收资源。为探讨生活垃圾资源化利用策略,综合生命周期评价与生命周期成本分析方法,建立生态效率模型。以天津市为例,分析和比较焚烧发电、卫生填埋-填埋气发电、与堆肥+卫生填埋3种典型生活垃圾资源化利用情景的生态效率。结果表明,堆肥+卫生填埋情景具有潜在最优生态效率;全球变暖对总环境影响贡献最大,而投资成本对经济影响贡献最大。考虑天津市生活垃圾管理现状,建议鼓励发展生活垃圾干湿组分分离及厨余垃圾堆肥的资源化利用策略。  相似文献

Environmental Fate of Gallium Arsenide Semiconductor Disposal   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This article describes a methodology for the quantitative assessment of the environmental fate of gallium and arsenic from the disposal of mobile phones containing gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductors, using data from Japan.
The product lifetime of mobile phones is short, and the recycling systems for such phones are currently underdeveloped. As a result, many mobile phones are disposed of via incineration and landfilling. The disposal of GaAs semiconductors could lead to some releases of gallium and arsenic to air and water. The methodology presented here begins with an estimation of the cumulative number of disposed mobile phones, using a logistic curve. Then, thermodynamic simulation and laboratory experiments are carried out to assess how much gallium and arsenic may be released into the environment. Using this method, the cumulative number of mobile phones disposed of in Japan is calculated to be 610 million by 2010. Distribution among air emissions, the leachate, and the insoluble residue (in landfilled incinerator ash) was determined to be 4.20 × 10-2%, 1.58 × 10-1%, and 99.8% for gallium, and 2.00 × 10-1%, 19.5%, and 80.3% for arsenic, respectively. For phones that are disposed of directly in landfills, it is estimated that nearly 100% of the gallium and arsenic exists as the insoluble residue. We suggest that, in the conditions present in Japan, disposal of mobile phones directly into the landfill is preferable to the incineration with subsequent landfill of ash with respect to gallium and arsenic emissions into the environment. The proposed methodology may be adapted for the assessment of the environmental fate of problematic substances from the disposal of similar products.  相似文献

Summary Rooted-cuttings and saplings of green ash (Fraxinus lanceolata) and hybrid poplar (Populus spp) were planted on a former municipal refuse landfill and on a nearby nonlandfill control plot. The root systems of four trees of each species and size were excavated on the landfill plot-two growing in an area where the concentrations of anaerobic landfill gases were relatively high and two in a relatively low-gas area. Two trees of each species and size were also excavated on the control. The root systems of both species were significantly shallower on the landfill plot than on the control. Green ash appeared to avoid the adverse gas environment of the deeper soil layers on the landfill by producing adventitious roots. Hybrid poplar became adapted in a different manner, by redirecting root growth from the deepter soil layers to the soil surface.  相似文献

瑞昌石灰岩红壤区退耕还林土壤动物群落特征   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
以江西瑞昌石灰岩红壤区采取多树种混交、竹阔混交和林苗一体化3种模式退耕还林6年后的林地为研究对象,分析退耕还林对土壤动物群落及其数量变化的影响.退耕还林地土壤动物隶属于6门17纲34目,优势类群为线虫纲,占总类群数的86.7%;常见类群为蜱螨目、线蚓科以及弹尾目.对照农耕地土壤动物隶属于5门10纲21目,优势类群为线虫纲,占总密度的86.7%;常见类群为蜱螨目和线蚓科.退耕还林地土壤稀有类群数(30类)明显大于农耕地(18类).除冬季外退耕还林地土壤动物类群数和平均密度显著高于农耕地.土壤动物的垂直分布具有明显的表聚性,表层(0~5 cm)土壤动物数量与5~10、10~15 cm土层存在极显著差异,且退耕还林地表聚性较农耕地更明显.退耕还林地土壤动物类群数均为夏季>秋季>春季>冬季,且夏、秋季与春、冬季差异显著;平均密度为秋季>夏季>春季>冬季,季节间差异显著.退耕还林地土壤动物生物多样性指数显著高于农耕地,3种退耕还林模式中,多树种混交模式的生物多样性最高,林苗一体化模式最低.  相似文献

以川中丘陵区小流域为研究对象,研究了坡耕地、坡改梯、甜橙林和水保林4种土地利用方式以及裸地(对照)对0~10和10~20 cm土壤容重、土壤孔隙度及土壤养分含量的影响.结果表明: 同一土地利用方式下,毛管孔隙度、非毛管孔隙度、总孔隙度、有机质、全氮、全磷、碱解氮、有效磷、速效钾随土层加深而减小,而土壤容重则相反,全钾层间差异不大.相同土层甜橙林毛管孔隙度、非毛管孔隙度、总孔隙度、全磷、有效磷含量最大,容重最小,水保林全氮、碱解氮含量最高,水保林0~10 cm土层的有机质含量最高,甜橙林10~20 cm土层的有机质含量最高.0~10 cm土层,灰色关联度从大到小依次为水保林(0.9441)、甜橙林(0.8858)、梯平地(0.6300)、裸地(0.5397)、缓坡耕地(0.4714);10~20 cm土层,灰色关联度依次为水保林(0.8919)、甜橙林(0.8401)、梯平地(0.5773)、裸地(0.5301)、缓坡耕地(0.5175).水保林改善土壤理化性质作用最佳,缓坡耕地改良效果最差.  相似文献

Incineration of municipal solid waste as an alternative to its disposal in landfills has advantages such as volume reduction and generation of energy. However, both air emissions and the residual ash may pose environmental and human health hazards. The Ames mutagenicity assay was used to determine the mutagenicity of fly and bottom ash from two incinerators over time. This assay is an alternative to costly and time-consuming chemical analyses and is more realistic for the assessment of the best disposition of the ash i.e. whether it could pose a risk to handlers of the ash, whether it can be used in cement or as a fertilizer or whether it should be relegated to a landfill. The mutagenic potency of fly and bottom ash on a per g weight basis of material is similar. Furthermore, the variability over time in mutagenicity indicates that constant monitoring of incineration products and byproducts is essential.  相似文献

以珠江三角洲城区(广州)、近郊(鼎湖山)及远郊(怀集)梯度上的亚热带常绿阔叶林为对象,研究不同土层土壤总有机碳、惰性有机碳、活性有机碳(易氧化有机碳、微生物生物量碳和水溶性有机碳)沿城市化梯度的变化,分析城市化对森林土壤有机碳的影响.结果表明: 0~5 cm土层土壤总有机碳和惰性有机碳含量均在城市化梯度上差异不显著,在5~60 cm土层,土壤总有机碳含量在远郊森林显著高于近郊和城区森林,而惰性有机碳含量在近郊森林最高,城区与远郊森林差异不显著.易氧化有机碳含量在近郊森林显著低于远郊(0~60 cm)和城区(0~10 cm)森林,微生物生物量碳含量在城区森林显著低于近郊和远郊森林,而水溶性有机碳含量在近郊森林(0~10 cm)显著低于城区森林.在0~20 cm土层,城区、远郊森林土壤活性有机碳占总有机碳的比例显著高于近郊森林,而惰性有机碳占总有机碳的比例在远郊森林最低;近郊与城区森林惰性有机碳占总有机碳的比例仅在5~10 cm差异显著.城市化增加了土壤活性碳组分,降低稳定性碳组分,不利于总有机碳积累,远郊森林土壤对城市化的响应更敏感.  相似文献

黄土丘陵区坡耕地与撂荒地土壤水分对降雨的响应特征   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
为了揭示黄土丘陵区不同土地覆被方式下土壤含水量对不同强度降雨的响应过程,选取山西省冯家沟小流域农耕地和撂荒地为研究对象,基于2019年4—10月降雨和土壤含水量以小时为单位的观测数据,分析了土壤含水量对不同强度降雨的响应规律。结果表明:(1)小雨、中雨、大雨和暴雨对土层的影响深度分别为20、20、60 cm和60 cm,研究区降雨最主要的形式—小雨对土壤水分的补给作用较小。(2)各强度降雨过程中,除0—10 cm土层外,农耕地土壤含水量均大于撂荒地,且大雨条件下农耕地各土层土壤含水量变化较显著,而撂荒地仅0—10 cm和10—20 cm土层土壤含水量有所增加。(3)不同土层土壤含水量对降雨的响应不同,表层响应相对明显而深层相对减弱;农耕地土壤平均含水量最大值出现在50—60 cm土层,而撂荒地出现在30—40 cm土层。(4)本地区农耕地土壤含水量高于撂荒地,表明在该地区适当的作物种植有较好的储存土壤水分的作用。本研究的结果对地区水资源的高效利用和水土流失防控提供了一定的科学依据。  相似文献

In order to reduce the leachate strength from landfill at source, a novel landfill, functional layer embedded landfill, was developed through the introduction of the functional layers, and a comparative study was conducted between the functional layer embedded landfill (FLEL, R1) and the conventional landfill (CL, R2). It was found that the pollutant in leachate effluent from R1 was 20-50%, 14-43% and 33-75% of that from R2, in terms of COD, TN and NH3-N. The cumulative movement of waste settlement was about 16.4 and 13.1 cm in R1 and R2 under the test period of 1 years, resulting in 13.7% and 10.9% of the original landfill height. Therefore, FLEL could save the land area and the cost of the leachate treatment process due to the reduction of leachate strength, and more waste could be disposed in landfill through the acceleration of the MSW degradation process, comparing to the CL.  相似文献

Compacted soil barriers are one of the most important components of municipal waste landfills. The material used to construct a landfill liner and/or cap must prevent the flow of fluids through them. Soils with low values of permeability (such as compacted clays) are often used to construct landfill barriers. Natural sands and other cohesionless materials are used to construct hydraulic barriers by adding admixtures to modify their properties. Several studies have been conducted that dealt with determining geotechnical engineering properties of sand-bentonite mixtures. Pulverized coal combustion (PCC) dry bottom ash is a coal combustion by-product of burning coal to produce electricity. Because of the increasing costs associated with the disposal of bottom ash and the environmental regulations in place, there is a need to develop alternate methods for profitable and environmentally safe uses of this waste material. Most scientists and researchers have concluded that bottom ash has geotechnical characteristics similar to those of sands. However, information on the use of bottom ash, with or without admixtures, in the construction of landfill barriers is limited. Most of the available literature on the engineering properties of bottom ash deals with its use as a fill material. The physical and chemical characteristics of bottom ash depend on several factors including type of coal used and type of boiler and collection system. This paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted to determine the possible use of Illinois PCC dry bottom ash amended with bentonite to construct landfill barriers. Test results presented show that the average value of hydraulic conductivity of Illinois PCC dry bottom ash with 15% bentonite content is close to the acceptable value required for its use as hydraulic barrier. Therefore, it was concluded that Illinois PCC dry bottom ash, modified with 15% or higher bentonite content, is likely to provide adequate hydraulic conductivity for its use to construct landfill barriers.  相似文献

研究了湖南会同红黄壤区杉木人工林和常绿阔叶林土壤微生物量和养分状况.结果表明,该区杉木人工林取代地带性常绿阔叶林和杉木连栽后,土壤微生物碳、氮和土壤养分含量下降,土壤严重退化.在0~10 cm土层内,常绿阔叶林土壤微生物碳和氮含量为800.5和84.5 mg·kg-1,分别是第1代杉木林的1.90和1.03倍、第2代杉木林的2.16和1.27倍;在10~20 cm土层内,常绿阔叶林土壤微生物碳和氮含量为475.4和63.3 mg·kg-1,分别是第1代杉木纯林的1.86、1.60倍和第2代杉木林的2.11和1.76倍.在0~10 cm 和10~20cm土层内,杉木人工林取代常绿阔叶林和杉木栽植代数增加后,土壤全氮、全钾、铵态氮和速效钾含量均明显降低,但差异并不显著.人工杉木林林分组成单一,其凋落物分解慢、归还养分数量少;炼山等造成的表土流失是杉木人工林土壤微生物量和养分库退化的重要原因.土壤微生物碳与土壤全氮、铵态氮、全钾和速效钾含量呈极显著的正相关,土壤微生物氮与土壤养分含量也达到极显著水平.  相似文献

2004年6~7月,在云南省大理白族自治州苍山和洱海国家自然保护区选取4种年龄段(6~10、11~15、16~20、31~40年)的松林和保护区周围的非保护区选取7种年龄段(1~5、6~10、11~15、16~20、21~30、31~40、50年以上)的松林,每种松林设3个重复,共33个样地,在样地内随机选取3个5m×5m的样方,调查并记录样方内草本植物和灌木的种类、数量、覆盖度。在每个样地按5条样线布笼100个捕捉小兽,每天检查捕获的种类和数量。计算珀氏长吻松鼠和赤腹松鼠在小兽群落中物种优势度、时间生态位宽度、两种小兽的时间生态位重叠度;用逐步回归分析两种松鼠与松林栖境因子的关系。上述结果表明,在保护区珀氏长吻松鼠出现的时间早于(6~10年的松林开始捕获到)赤腹松鼠(16~20年的松林内开始捕获到);在非保护区,分别在31~40年和21~30年的松林内才捕到珀氏长吻松鼠和赤腹松鼠。保护区31~40年的松林内珀氏长吻松鼠和赤腹松鼠种群数量分别是同年龄段非保护区松林的3倍和3·75倍。松林底层的灌木对两种小兽的种群数量有重要影响。珀氏长吻松鼠种群数量与灌木密度呈正相关;赤腹松鼠种群数量与灌木覆盖度呈正相关,而与草本植物覆盖度呈负相关。非保护区树底植被的异质性降低,延迟了两种松鼠在松林里建立种群的时间。  相似文献

土壤微生物呼吸及其熵值是表征土壤质量变化的敏感性指标,不仅能衡量土壤微生物碳利用效率,还能揭示土壤有机碳的变化。通过比较亚热带米槠天然林转换为马尾松人工林和杉木人工林后土壤微生物呼吸速率、土壤微生物生物量碳以及微生物熵、代谢熵的差异,研究亚热带森林转换对土壤微生物碳利用效率的影响。研究结果显示:(1)与天然林相比,马尾松人工林0—10 cm土壤微生物呼吸速率上升32%(P<0.05),马尾松人工林和杉木人工林10—20 cm土壤微生物呼吸速率分别下降26%和24%(P<0.05);但在20—40 cm土层和40—60 cm土层,天然林土壤微生物呼吸速率比马尾松人工林分别高50%和43%;(2)马尾松人工林和杉木人工林0—10 cm土层土壤微生物生物量碳(MBC)比天然林分别下降19%和40%(P<0.05),但马尾松人工林10—20 cm土壤MBC上升29%(P<0.05);(3)人工林表层土壤微生物熵与天然林没有显著差异,但与天然林相比,杉木人工林和马尾松人工林20—40 cm土层土壤微生物熵分别下降51%和71%(P<0.05),40—60 cm分别下...  相似文献

Field surveys were conducted from 2008 to 2011 in the Khabarovsk and Vladivostok regions of Russia to investigate the occurrence of emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, and mortality factors affecting its immature stages. We found emerald ash borer infesting both introduced North American green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall) and native oriental ashes (F. mandshurica Rupr. and F. rhynchophylla Hance) in both regions. Emerald ash borer densities (larvae/m(2) of phloem area) were markedly higher on green ash (11.3-76.7 in the Khabarovsk area and 77-245 in the Vladivostok area) than on artificially stressed Manchurian ash (2.2) or Oriental ash (10-59). Mortality of emerald ash borer larvae caused by different biotic factors (woodpecker predation, host plant resistance and/or undetermined diseases, and parasitism) varied with date, site, and ash species. In general, predation of emerald ash borer larvae by woodpeckers was low. While low rates (3-27%) of emerald ash borer larval mortality were caused by undetermined biotic factors on green ash between 2009 and 2011, higher rates (26-95%) of emerald ash borer larval mortality were caused by putative plant resistance in Oriental ash species in both regions. Little (<1%) parasitism of emerald ash borer larvae was observed in Khabarovsk; however, three hymenopteran parasitoids (Spathius sp., Atanycolus nigriventris Vojnovskaja-Krieger, and Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang) were observed attacking third - fourth instars of emerald ash borer in the Vladivostok area, parasitizing 0-8.3% of emerald ash borer larvae infesting Oriental ash trees and 7.3-62.7% of those on green ash trees (primarily by Spathius sp.) in two of the three study sites. Relevance of these findings to the classical biological control of emerald ash borer in newly invaded regions is discussed.  相似文献
