Experiments were done on seven lambs between the ages of 10 and 24 days to investigate the effects of sleep on the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to a decrease in ambient temperature. Each lamb was anesthetized and instrumented for recordings of electrocorticogram, electro-oculogram, and nuchal electromyograms and measurements of cardiac output, systemic and pulmonic pressures and hemoglobin oxygen saturations as well as body core temperature. No sooner than three days after surgery, measurements were made during periods of quiet wakefulness, quiet sleep and active sleep at ambient temperatures of 25 degrees C and 18 degrees C. Decreasing the environmental temperature from 25 degrees C to 18 degrees C elicited a similar thermogenic response during quiet wakefulness, quiet sleep and active sleep as evidenced by an increase in total body oxygen consumption. The increased metabolic oxygen demand was met by an increase in systemic oxygen transport as well as by an increase in total body oxygen extraction. Since shivering was absent during active sleep, it is likely that nonshivering thermogenesis played a major role in the metabolic response. Our data provide evidence that sleep does not significantly alter the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to a modest decrease in ambient temperature in young lambs.  相似文献

Abstract Granivory (seed feeding) evolved in many animal groups. Field observations hint at the existence of granivory in terrestrial isopods (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscidea), for which it was previously unknown. In this paper granivory in terrestrial isopods is addressed for the first time, focusing on (i) seed acceptance in the presence of plant litter and (ii) size as a constraint for acceptance and consumption. In a laboratory choice experiment, Armadillidium vulgare consumed seeds of Capsella bursa‐pastoris and Poa annua when plant litter was present. In a no‐choice experiment, seeds of seven plant species were offered to four isopod species giving 13 combinations in total [A. vulgare (seven species of seeds), Oniscus asellus (two), Porcellio scaber (two), and Porcellionides pruinosus (two)]. The tested isopods differed in their acceptance (proportion of individuals consuming seeds) and consumption (both number and amount of seeds eaten) of seed species. Size as a constraint was demonstrated in A. vulgare offered Cirsium arvense seed, since the probability that this large seed was eaten increased with body size of the isopod. In the other 10 seed–isopod pairs, seed consumption increased linearly with isopod body size. Granivory is thus widespread in terrestrial isopods, although the tendency to eat seeds differs between species.  相似文献

The radiation of the terrestrial isopods (sub-order Oniscidea) has been accompanied by evolution of pleopodal lungs in the sections Tylida and Crinocheta. To understand the significance of such lungs for aerobic respiration, comparative studies were conducted using 6 species. Ligia occidentalis, lacking lungs, behaved as a metabolic conformer in reduced PO(2), and showed decreased V(.-)O(2) in low humidity and following dehydration. In species possessing lungs, metabolism was insensitive to dehydration. However, lung development did not show a clear relationship to metabolic regulation: Porcellio dilatatus was a metabolic conformer while Tylos punctatus and Armadillidium vulgare were efficient regulators. The metabolic conformers did not accumulate lactate during moderate hypoxia (10% O(2)), indicating that reduced V(.-)O(2) is not compensated with anaerobic glycolysis. In contrast, Alloniscus perconvexus, a littoral species with limited metabolic regulation, showed the largest lactate accumulation during hypoxia and also possessed the highest tissue LDH activity. It is hypothesized that these are adaptations to periodic hypoxia in sand burrows and the high metabolic cost of burrowing. Differences in lactate accumulation during immersion were curious, with the largest increases occurring in L. occidentalis and A. perconvexus that tolerate prolonged immersion in seawater. Possible functions of this lactate accumulation may include modulation of hemocyanin oxygen affinity.  相似文献

Abstract. The hypotheses that the sheltering behavior of four species of terrestrial isopods varies in relation to differences in their morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to the terrestrial environment were tested using artificial refugia together with independent estimates of density to derive an index of sheltering activity. (1) Porcellio scaber sheltered significantly more than Platyarthrus hoffmannseggi, Armadillidium vulgare , or Philoscia muscorum , which sheltered the least. (2) There was a decline in the sheltering index (SI) for all four species after the breeding season, continuing through to the autumn and remaining low throughout the winter. (3) Changes in the sheltering behavior of each species in relation to changes in environmental conditions were used to interpret known differences in the position and breadth of their resource utilization curves along a gradient of rabbit grazing intensity. (4) Porcellio scaber sheltered more where the soil was more calcareous, P. muscorum more under the shade of trees, and both P. muscorum and A. vulgare more in grazed than in ungrazed swards. (5) Sheltering behavior was found to be positively correlated to both rainfall and soil temperature the day before sampling for A. vulgare but negatively to rainfall for P. muscorum. There was a positive relationship between the SI for P. scaber and daily air temperature range. (6) Variations in the sheltering behavior of these four species of terrestrial isopod are discussed in the context of their foraging and digestive strategies and in relation to their morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to the terrestrial environment.  相似文献

Abstract This study examined how the standard metabolic rate of tegu lizards, a species that undergoes large ontogenetic changes in body weight with associated changes in life-history traits, is affected by changes in body mass, body temperature, season, and life-history traits. We measured rates of oxygen consumption (Vo(2)) in 90 individuals ranging in body mass from 10.4 g to 3.75 kg at three experimental temperatures (17 degrees , 25 degrees , and 30 degrees C) over the four seasons. We found that standard metabolic rate scaled to the power of 0.84 of body mass at all experimental temperatures in all seasons and that thermal sensitivity of metabolism was relatively low (Q(10) approximately 2.0-2.5) over the range from 17 degrees to 30 degrees C regardless of body size or season. Metabolic rates did vary seasonally, being higher in spring and summer than in autumn and winter at the same temperatures, and this was true regardless of animal size. Finally, in this study, the changes in life-history traits that occurred ontogenetically were not accompanied by significant changes in metabolic rate.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption (ml kg-0.75/min) in relation to ambient air temperature at or below the lower critical temperature (Tlc) of the winter-furred raccoon dog (+10 degrees C) and the blue fox (-6 degrees C) is described by the equations y = 14.8-0.28x and y = 7.5-0.20x, respectively. Muscular shivering activity (integrated EMG) of both species increased below thermoneutrality parallel with increasing oxygen uptake and heart rate. Seasonal changes in measured metabolic parameters were evident for both species. The results suggest that the overall body insulation or the metabolic response to cold are not essentially worse in the raccoon dog as compared with the blue fox. It is concluded that earlier speculations of surprisingly wide thermoneutral zone and very low Tlc of the Arctic fox are not evident for the blue fox.  相似文献

In early fall, adult alder leaf beetles (Agelastica alni L.) retreat, for overwintering, to the top layer of the soil near their forage trees where the ground gets easily waterlogged so that the beetles will be submerged and cut off from atmospheric oxygen. Hence, unlike most other adult insects, alder leaf beetles encounter hypoxia/anoxia in their natural habitat and this may occur at moderate temperature. Exposing beetles to pure nitrogen gas at 20 degrees C had similar behavioral and metabolic effects as submerging them in water, causing rapid immobility and increasing the content of lactate about sevenfold to some 5&mgr;molg(-1) body weight during 10h anoxia. Recovery from 10 h hypoxia/anoxia in pure nitrogen was complete within about 90min.Hypoxia/anoxia triggered a marked decrease in metabolic activity in the beetles (microcalorimetry at 21.7 degrees C) as indicated by a precipitous drop in their heat flow rate, from 1.39+/-0.27 to 0.08+/-0.04mWg(-1) body weight, i.e. by about 94%, when the flow of gas through the calorimeter was switched from air to pure nitrogen. Post-anoxic recovery was accompanied by a peak in heat flow rate that exceeded the basal normoxic rate by about 50%. The homoeostasis of adenine nucleotides in Agelastica is lost when oxygen is wanting. Submergence at 15 degrees C for three days caused a dramatic fall in ATP, to less than 2% of the normoxic value, and a marked increase in AMP, while the total contents of adenine nucleotides decreased by almost two-thirds. Reduced metabolic activity, combined with the capacity to regenerate ATP after readmission of air, is regarded as a key factor for surviving transient lack of oxygen in alder leaf beetles.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory capacities of 51 reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L.) aged 1-35 days were studied at -26.5 to +35.0 degrees C ambient temperatures at Kaamanen reindeer research station, Finland (69 degrees 10' N) during calving periods in May 1981 and May-July 1982. The newborn calves aged 1-4 days maintained a high body temperature (Tre) (mean +40.2 degrees C) even at the lowest experimental temperature of -22.5 degrees C by increasing their metabolic rate five-fold above the level at +11.0 degrees C. Heat production of the new-born calves was largely based on the metabolism of brown adipose tissue, stimulated by cold-induced discharge of the sympathetic nervous transmitter, noradrenaline (NA). Sensitivity of the calves to exogenous NA disappeared during the first 3-4 weeks of life. Thermal conductance of the calves was low at low ambient temperatures, but rose strongly as Ta increased above +10 degrees C. The extensive peripheral cooling, especially in the feet, was demonstrated in the calves aged 1-10 days. The lowest foot temperature (+10.5 degrees C) was measured in a 4-day-old calf at -14.5 degrees C. Slight shivering thermogenesis was recorded in the calves aged 1-4 days and occasionally in the older calves at low values of Ta. Shivering appears to be a reserve mechanism against severe cold. At about +20 degrees C and above the calves increased their Tre (approximately 1 degree C), oxygen consumption and heart rate. In the newborn calves oxygen consumption rose four- to five-fold and in 1-month-old calves about two-fold. Fast growing calves (maximum 400 g/day) appear to be more stressed by heat than by cold exposure.  相似文献

To determine whether metabolic rate is suppressed in a temperature-independent fashion in the golden-mantled ground squirrel during steady state hibernation, we measured body temperature and metabolic rate in ground squirrels during hibernation at different T(a)'s. In addition, we attempted to determine whether heart rate, ventilation rate, and breathing patterns changed as a function of body temperature or metabolic rate. We found that metabolic rate changed with T(a) as it was raised from 5 degrees to 14 degrees C, which supports the theory that different species sustain falls in metabolic rate during hibernation in different ways. Heart rate and breathing pattern also changed with changing T(a), while breathing frequency did not. That the total breathing frequency did not correlate closely with oxygen consumption or body temperature, while the breathing pattern did, raises important questions regarding the mechanisms controlling ventilation during hibernation.  相似文献

In Tunisia, while wetlands are considered as remarkable habitats for their faunal and floral diversity, few studies on the biogeography and the diversity of terrestrial isopods were performed. To fill this gap, we carried out a field study in the supralittoral zone of 146 Tunisian wetlands belonging to eight types (lagoon, river, lake, sebkha, dam, hill reservoir, beach and chott) and to five bioclimatic zones (humid, subhumid, semi‐arid, arid and Saharan). Field work was carried out in spring 2010. Terrestrial isopods were collected in the morning by hand search each time with the same sampling effort. During the study, 22 species of terrestrial isopods belonging to nine families were collected. Porcellio variabilis, Porcellio laevis, Chaetophiloscia elongata and Armadillidium pelagicum are the most common species identified. From the northern to the southern regions, a gradual decrease in species richness has been shown. The identified species belonged to different biogeographical categories: Mediterranean, Mediterranean‐Atlantic, North Africa with circum‐Sicilian islands, semi‐arid and Saharan species. Some of these species are endemic to Tunisia (Porcellio dominici) or to North Africa (Armadillidium sulcatum, Armadillidium tunisiense, Porcellio marginenotatus and P. variabilis). In grassland populations of the woodlice Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio scaber (Latreille) the sex ratio in hand collections from beneath wooden offcuts and roofing tiles varied through the breeding season. The proportion of males was higher in these collections from surface refugia than in independent estimates of the population sex ratio taken from soil cores. Collections became female-biased in June and July when most females were carrying broods, most notably in P. scaber . It is suggested that males use surface shelter between foraging events. A. vulgare males are particularly abundant under boards in May as they become active on the soil surface in order to locate mates. Females may find the higher and more equable temperatures in refugia attractive because they reduce brood development time but the cost of this advantage is the risk of failure to balance moisture requirements. These patterns of habitat use by the sexes have important implications for several population processes, the evolution of life-history tactics and the development of mating systems in these species.  相似文献

The effects of temperature acclimation, acute temperature variation and progressive hypoxia on oxygen consumption rates (VO2) were determined for the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. In the first experiment, after acclimation to 5, 15 or 25 degrees C for at least 2 weeks, VO2 was determined at 5 degrees C increments from 5 to 45 degrees C. VO2 increased in all three acclimation groups from 5 to 30 degrees C, corresponding to the normal ambient temperature range for this species. Mussels displayed imperfect temperature compensation at temperatures above 15 degrees C, but exhibited little acclimatory ability below 15 degrees C. In the hypoxia experiment, VO2 was determined over the course of progressive hypoxia, from full saturation (oxygen tension [PO2]=160 Torr [21.3 kPa]) to a PO2 at which oxygen uptake ceased (<10 Torr [1.3 kPa]). Mussels were acclimated to either 5, 15 or 25 degrees C for at least 2 weeks and their respiratory response to progressive hypoxia was measured at three test temperatures (5, 15 and 25 degrees C). The degree of oxygen regulation increased with increasing test temperature, particularly from 5 to 15 degrees C, but decreased with increasing acclimation temperature. The decreased metabolic rate observed for warm-acclimated animals, particularly in the upper portion of the temperature range of the zebra mussel, may allow for conservation of organic energy stores during warm summer months. Compared to other freshwater bivalves, D. polymorpha is a relatively poor oxygen regulator, corresponding with its preference for well-oxygenated aquatic habitats. In addition, a new quantitative method for determining the degree of oxygen regulation is presented.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption rate of the southern rock lobster, Jasus edwardsii, was evaluated in response to body weight, temperature, activity, handling, diurnal rhythm, feeding and oxygen saturation level. There was a positive relationship between standard oxygen consumption (M(O(2))) and both body weight and water temperature. The relationship between total oxygen consumption and wet whole body weight was described by the equation: LogM(O(2))=0.595log W-0.396 (r(2)=0.83). The relationship between weight-specific oxygen consumption and temperature was described by the equation: LogM(O(2))=0.047T-2.25 (r(2)=0.94). Activity had a significant influence on the oxygen consumption rate, causing a three-fold increase above the standard rate at the temperature of acclimation (13 degrees C). However, at temperatures approaching the upper and lower extremes, lobsters had a decreased ability to increase their oxygen consumption rates during activity. Lobsters took 4.5-5 h to return to standard oxygen consumption rates after a period of emersion and handling. A strong diurnal rhythm to oxygen consumption was recorded. J. edwardsii displayed a classic postprandial increase in oxygen consumption. A peak (1.72 times standard M(O(2))) occurred 10-13 h after feeding with an increase above standard M(O(2)) being maintained for 42 h. In its rested state J. edwardsii was an oxygen regulator down to a critical oxygen tension of 58 Torr, whilst activity resulted in the critical oxygen tension increasing to 93 Torr.  相似文献

1999年 4~ 6月 ,采用室内实验生态学方法对栉孔扇贝的耗氧率和排氨率进行了研究 .结果表明 ,在适宜的温度范围内 ,栉孔扇贝的耗氧率和排氨率均与温度成正比 ,而与体重呈负相关关系 .在实验室温度 (8~ 2 8℃ )条件下 ,栉孔扇贝的耗氧率为 0 .48~ 9.0 9mg·g-1·h-1,排氨率为 0 .0 5~ 1 0 1mg·g-1·h-1.其中耗氧率在 2 3℃时达到最高值 ,2 8℃时开始下降 ,而排氨率则呈持续升高趋势 .栉孔扇贝的日常代谢明显高于标准代谢 ,耗氧率和排氨率平均值分别提高约 35 .8%和 75 .9% .  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of temperature acclimated mummichogs, Fundulus heteroclitus (L.) weighing ≈0.1–10.0 g, was measured at 5, 13, 21, and 29 C. Between 13 and 21°C and 21 and 29°C, the values of Q10 were 1.55 and 1.04, respectively, indicating relative thermal independence of respiratory metabolic rate over this 16°C range (Q10 = 1.27). This range encompasses the normal late spring, summer, and early fall range of habitat temperature in Maine estuaries, so that mummichogs are able to grow and reproduce relatively independent of environmental temperature. Between 5 and 13°C, respiratory metabolism is very temperature sensitive (Q10 = 4.42) indicating a substantial reduction of metabolic processes at low temperatures. This enables mummichogs to conserve any metabolic reserves during the coldest months. The regression of log weight-specific oxygen consumption on log body weight was determined at each experimental temperature. All had significantly negative slopes indicating the importance of body size in mummichog respiration.  相似文献

The effects of meal size on the postprandial metabolic response and of digestion on the post-exercise metabolic recovery process were investigated in juvenile black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) . Experimental fish were forcedly fed with compound feed (meal sizes: 0.5%, 1% and 2% body weight). Then, the postprandial oxygen consumption rate and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) of the experimental fish were measured. Both the duration and the peak of oxygen consumption rate (PMR) increased with increasing meal size. The peak post-exercise metabolic rate of digesting fish were significantly higher, whereas EPOC magnitude and its duration were significantly smaller or (shorter) than those in the fasting fish. It is suggested that (1) this fish fulfills the increased energy demand during the digestive process by increasing PMR and by prolonging SDA duration with increasing meal size and (2) digesting fish might decrease their anaerobic exhaustive activity but increase the post-exercise recovery capacity.  相似文献

The physiological response to temperature, in terms of oxygen consumption, nitrogen excretion and feed intake was examined in Jasus edwardsii larvae at mid-stages I-III. From stage I to stage III, the mass-specific oxygen consumption increased in a sigmoid pattern over the temperature range of 10-22 degrees C. The Q(10) value declined significantly from 14-18 to 18-22 degrees C range, indicating a reduced temperature dependence of larval metabolism at higher temperatures. At all stages, feed intake increased with increasing temperature but reached a plateau at the higher temperatures for stages I and II larvae. In contrast, nitrogen excretion increased linearly over this temperature range for all larval stages. Therefore, higher temperatures ( approximately 22 degrees C) may cause an energetic imbalance and reduce growth potential in early stage larvae. While the convection requirement index (quotient of feed intake and oxygen consumption) indicated an equivalent metabolic feeding efficiency from 14 to 22 degrees C, a consistent decline of the O/N ratio above 16-18 degrees C from stage I to stage III suggested that exposure to elevated temperatures may result in an increase in the amount of protein being diverted from growth to catabolic processes. Based on these results, a temperature of 18 degrees C is recommended for the culture of early stage J. edwardsii larvae.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the lack of metabolic thermal acclimation ability in tropical and subtropical amphibians is dependent on season and investigated the effects of body size, sex, time of day, and season on metabolic rates in Rana latouchii. The males were acclimated at 15 degrees, 20 degrees, and 25 degrees C, and their oxygen consumption was measured at 15 degrees, 20 degrees, 25 degrees, and 30 degrees C in all four seasons, with the exception that we did not measure oxygen consumption at 30 degrees C in winter frogs. We also acclimated the males at 30 degrees C in summer for investigating diel variation of metabolic rate. The females were acclimated at 20 degrees and 25 degrees C, and their oxygen consumption was measured at 15 degrees , 20 degrees , 25 degrees , and 30 degrees C in summer. Our results showed that metabolic rates of R. latouchii differed by time of day, season, and acclimation temperature but did not differ by sex if the results were adjusted for differences in body mass. Summer males exhibited a 26%-48% increase in metabolic rates from the lowest values in the seasons. There was a trend of increased oxygen consumption in cold-acclimated males, but it was significant only at 15 degrees and 25 degrees C in summer, autumn, and winter. These results support the hypothesis that thermal acclimation of metabolism is seasonally dependent, which has not been reported in other tropical and subtropical amphibians.  相似文献

As ectothermic vertebrates, reptiles undergo diurnal and seasonal changes in body temperature, which affect many biological functions. In conjunction with a general review regarding the effects of temperature on digestion in reptiles, we describe the effects of various temperatures (20-35 degrees C) on the metabolic response to digestion in the Burmese python (Python molurus). The snakes were fed mice amounting to 20% of their body weight and gas exchange (oxygen uptake and CO(2) production) were measured until digestion had ended and gas exchange returned to fasting levels. Elevated temperature was associated with a faster and larger metabolic increase after ingestion, and the time required to return to fasting levels was markedly longer at low temperature. The factorial increase between fasting oxygen consumption (VO(2)) and maximal VO(2) during digestion was, however, similar at all temperatures studied. Furthermore, the integrated SDA response was not affected by temperature suggesting the costs associated with digestion are temperature-independent. Other studies on reptiles show that digestive efficiency is only marginally affected by temperature and we conclude that selection of higher body temperatures during digestion (postprandial thermophilic response) primarily reduces the time required for digestion.  相似文献
