Hispanic construction workers, particularly those born outside of the United States, are a growing segment of the Texas workforce and are increasingly the victims of on-the-job fatalities. This study examines occupational fatality characteristics among Hispanic construction workers utilizing records collected by the Texas Workers' Compensation Commission for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census of Occupational Fatal Injuries program. Of the 370 fatalities recorded from 1997 to 1999, 179 cases (46.5%) involved Hispanic workers — 109 of who were born in a foreign country. The fatality rate for Hispanic construction workers was 23.5 per 100,000 workers compared to 21.2 for non-Hispanic workers. Many fatally injured Hispanic construction workers shared similar characteristics including: low skill level, young age and foreign birthplace. Hispanic workers employed as construction laborers, helpers, and roofers had the highest number of fatalities. Businesses with fewer than 10 workers employed forty-two % of all Hispanic decedents, and businesses with more than 100 employees comprised twenty % of fatalities. The leading causes of Hispanic fatalities were: transportation incidents, falls, and exposure to harmful substances.  相似文献

Students in three high schools in West Virginia completed one of three questionnaires according to work status. A total of 1156, 14- to 17-year-old students completed the survey, 17% had ever (currently or previously) worked. These students reported employment mostly during June to August (36%), mainly in recreational facilities (15%). The main task performed was cleaning (44%). Forty-five percent experienced one or more on-the-job injuries with cuts being the most common. A large number of the teenagers (84%) reported receiving training in how to do their job and little training on safety and health. When the teenagers were queried on who is at fault when a teenager is injured, 46% indicated that accidents just happen and 38% blamed the teenager. The respondents indicated they had used scaffolding and ladders (32%), power tools (29%), and/or driven mo tor vehicle (15%), all tasks prohibited by child labor laws. The results indicate a deficiency in knowledge among this group of teenagers on topics related to occupational safety and health and child labor laws. A need exists for a concerted team approach to address these problems.  相似文献

Background

Needle stick and sharps injuries are occupational hazards to healthcare workers. Every day healthcare workers are exposed to deadly blood borne pathogens through contaminated needles and other sharp objects. About twenty blood borne pathogens can be transmitted through accidental needle stick and sharp injury. The study was conducted to determine the lifetime and past one year prevalence of needle stick and sharps injuries and factors associated with the past one year injuries among hospital healthcare workers in Southeast Ethiopia.

Methods

An institutional based cross sectional study was conducted in December 2014 among healthcare workers in four hospitals of Bale zone, Southeast of Ethiopia. A total of 362 healthcare workers were selected randomly from each department in the hospitals. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire. The collected data were entered into Epi-Info version 3.5 and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent effect of each independent variable on the outcome variable. Written informed consent was secured from the participants.

Results

The prevalence of lifetime needle stick and sharp injury was 37.1% with 95% CI of 32.0% to 42.5%. The prevalence of injury within the past one year was 19.1% with 95% CI of 14.9% to 23.3%. Emergency ward was a department with highest needle stick and sharp injury (31.7%). The main cause of injury was syringe needles (69.8%). Participants who practiced needle recapping had higher odds of needle stick and sharp injury within the past 12 months (AOR = 3.23, 95% CI: 1.78, 5.84) compared to their counterparts.

Conclusions

Nearly one out of five respondents had experienced needle stick and/or sharp injury at least once within past one year. There were practices and behaviors that put healthcare workers at risk of needle stick and sharp injury at the study area. Needle recapping was key modifiable risk behavior. Health policy makers and hospital administrators should formulate strategies to improve the working condition for healthcare workers and increase their adherence to universal precautions.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo simulation was performed to generate probability density distributions describing hourly inhalation rates of male and female construction workers. Ranges of oxygen uptake and ventilation rates reported in the literature for various construction trades were manipulated in a simulation to generate hourly inhalation rates for male construction workers. The resulting inhalation rates can be represented by a log normal distribution with mean ± standard deviation of 1.40 ± 0.51 m3/h. Hourly inhalation rates for female construction workers were scaled from those of their male counterparts using relative awake-time inhalation rates of men and women of the general public. Female construction workers' inhalation rates can be represented by a log normal distribution with a mean ± standard deviation of 1.25 ± 0.66 m3/h. If the nature of the work is well understood, male and female construction workers' hourly inhalation rates can be scaled according to the construction trade. Construction trade-specific scaling factors were developed and range from 0.78 for electricians to 1.11 for ironworkers.  相似文献

Fish in the Kanawha River were collected with a 0.5-m plankton net in main-channel borders and in open areas of backwaters and with a 1-m2 enclosed dropbox in shallow backwater habitats. Larval emerald shiners, Notropis atherinoides , were twice as dense, and gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedianum , 2.5 times as dense in main-channel borders as in backwaters; larval Lepomis spp. were 20 times as dense in backwaters as in main-channel borders. Smaller Lepomis larvae used open-water backwater areas primarily; larger larvae migrated to vegetated backwater habitats later in the summer. Backwaters appear crucial for the maintenance of nest-building fish species in temperate rivers, just as floodplains are necessary for the maintenance of high species diversity in tropical rivers.  相似文献

The authors recently published a prototypic Risk Index (RI) to estimate the risk of critical errors associated with shift systems. This RI was based on published trends in the relative risk of injuries and accidents, and a simple additive model was proposed to estimate the risk for a given shift system. However, extending the RI to irregular work schedules requires an estimation of the phase and amplitude of the circadian rhythm in risk. This paper integrates the published evidence on three independent sources of data that allow such estimations to be made: the trend in risk over a 24 h day, over the course of the night shift, and across the three different (8 h) shifts. Despite potential confounders, maximum risk (i.e., acrophase=peak time) estimates across these three trends showed a remarkable consistency, with all three estimates occurring at about midnight, although the amplitude estimates varied considerably. The best estimate of the amplitude of the circadian rhythm in risk would appear to be that based on trend over the three (8 h) shifts, as this trend is the least confounded. The estimated acrophase (peak time) in risk appeared earlier than would be predicted from consideration of the circadian rhythm in alertness, fatigue, or performance on simple interpolated tasks, such as reaction time or performance on the Psychomotor Vigilance Test.  相似文献

In this article, some occupational risk analyses are summarized, and then the possible occupational accidents, and their causes and effects are discussed. In the second section, an idea on risk analysis called Failure-Consequence Analysis is proposed to be applied in workplaces. In the third section, a case study about the implementation of this method in a marble factory is given as an example. In the final section, advantages and disadvantages of the proposal are discussed.

As a result, it's suggested that the proposal is simple, easy, and can be applied quickly. It can identify the possible accident spots, severities, and causes in a single pass in the facility.  相似文献

目的:调查油田野外作业工人慢性疾病患病情况,分析职业紧张与神经递质的相关性。方法:通过整群抽样的方式选取油田野外作业工人2000例作为研究对象,采用自制的慢性非传染性疾病调查量表对所有工人的慢性疾病情况予以调查,采用职业紧张量表对所有工人的职业紧张情况予以调查。采用酶联免疫吸附法检测所有工人血清五羟色胺、去甲肾上腺素以及神经肽Y水平,并采用偏相关分析油田野外作业工人职业紧张与神经递质的相关性。结果:2000例油田野外作业工人慢性疾病发病率最高的前三种疾病分别为颈腰部疾病、高血压、高血脂,占比分别为20.60%、15.35%、11.20%。油田野外作业工人中男性职业任务、个体应对资源评分高于女性,而锻炼工人的个体紧张反应评分低于不锻炼工人(P0.05)。油田野外作业工人中饮酒工人神经肽Y水平低于不饮酒工人,锻炼工人的去甲肾上腺素水平高于不锻炼工人(P0.05)。经偏相关分析可得:油田野外作业工人的职业任务评分与五羟色胺、去甲肾上腺素水平呈正相关(P0.05),个体紧张反应评分与神经肽Y水平呈负相关(P0.05)。结论:油田野外作业工人慢性疾病患病情况不容乐观,且其职业紧张与神经递质存在密切相关,在临床工作中可通过改善油田野外作业工人的职业紧张,从而达到改善其神经递质水平的目的。  相似文献

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a basis to reduce occupational accidents in an acceptable level, and it covers employee health, safety, and welfare in the workplaces. Hospitals as the largest employer group in healthcare industry in Turkey face major hazards categorized as chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks. Although Turkey demonstrates rapid economic growth, OHS practices have not been fully put into practice, and necessary attention has not been paid to the health industry. For this reason, this paper aims to assess risks for health staff, contribute for planning of health services, and enhance regulations. A case study was carried out in a leading hospital in Turkey using a two-stage fuzzy multi-criteria approach, which provides more consistency in decision-making process and gives an appropriate final rank of hazard types. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) is used in weighing five risk parameters, which are severity, occurrence, undetectability, sensitivity to maintenance non-execution, and sensitivity to personal protective equipment (PPE) non-utilization. The fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR) approach is then applied for prioritization of hazard types in each department of the hospital. On conclusion of the hazard control hierarchy, measures are overtaken for the hazards, and areas open for improvement are presented.  相似文献

Extending working lives is considered a viable solution to fiscal and macroeconomic challenges related to population ageing. Opportunities for sustained employment, however, are not experienced equally among older population, particularly among those with a health problem. This study aims to examine the longer-term effect of health on employment trajectories in later part of working life using a unique survey-administrative linked dataset for Canada. Specifically, we apply competing-risks models to analyze whether different aspects of health conditions at baseline predict subsequent exit routes, including nonemployment and early retirement. The nonparametric findings of the paper show that only about 33% of workers aged 50–62 with a health problem at baseline remained employed at age 64, compared to 55% of healthy workers. Exiting into nonemployment seemed more common among leavers with activity limitations, while early retirement was more likely among healthy leavers. These results are robust even when individuals’ preferences for work and financial factors were controlled for. Moreover, we identify differential impacts of specific chronic diseases on early work exit. Not all symptoms affect employment transitions to a similar extent. Older workers who reported the comorbidity of mental and musculoskeletal disorders faced an increased risk of nonemployment, while the presence of diabetes and cardiovascular problems at baseline were more predictive of early retirement.  相似文献

Background & objectivesAn assessment of transition of cancer in India during the past 30 years, according to changes in demographic and epidemiologic risk factors was undertaken.Materials & methodsCancer registry data (http://www.ncdirindia.org), (population coverage <10%), was compared with transition in life-expectancy and prevalence on smoking, alcohol and obesity. We fitted linear regression to the natural logarithm of the estimated incidence rates of various cancer registries in India.ResultsBurden of cancer in India increased from 0.6 million in 1991 to 1.4 million in 2015. Among males, common cancers are lung (12.0%), mouth (11.4%), prostate (7.0%), and tongue (7.0%) and among females, they are breast (21.0%), cervix-uteri (12.1%), ovary (6.9%), and lung (4.9%) in 2012. Increased life-expectancy and population growth as well as increased use of alcohol and increased prevalence of overweight/obesity reflected an increase in all cancers in both genders except a reduction in infection-related cancers such as cervix-uteri and tobacco-related cancers such as pharynx (excludes nasopharynx) and oesophagus.Interpretation & conclusionTransition in demographics and epidemiologic risk factors, reflected an increase in all cancers in both genders except a reduction in a few cancers. The increasing incidence of cancer and its associated factors demands a planned approach to reduce its burden. The burden assessment needs to be strengthened by increasing the population coverage of cancer registries. Continued effort for tobacco prevention and public health efforts for reducing obesity and alcohol consumption are needed to reduce the cancer burden.  相似文献

目的:探讨油田野外作业人员职业紧张与生理健康及心理障碍的关系。方法:采用分层整群抽样抽取1862例油田野外作业人员,对所有油田野外作业人员发放问卷进行调查,有效回收1546份调查问卷,回收率83.03%。采用职业紧张量表修订表统计油田野外作业人员职业紧张发生状况,其中重度紧张者571例、中度紧张者590例、正常者385例,采用症状自评量表-90(SCL-90)对不同程度职业紧张人员进行心理健康状况评估,采用慢性非传染性疾病调查表问卷统计不同程度职业紧张人员的慢性疾病患病率,采用Logistic回归分析油田野外作业人员心理障碍影响因素。结果:重度紧张者、中度紧张者SCL-90各项评分均高于正常者,且重度紧张者SCL-90各项评分高于中度紧张者(P0.05)。油田野外作业人员心理障碍与其年龄、工龄无关(P0.05),男性、有倒班、吸烟、饮酒情况的油田野外作业人员心理障碍发生率高于女性、无倒班、吸烟、饮酒情况的油田野外作业人员(P0.05)。Logistic回归分析显示,男性、有倒班、吸烟、饮酒情况是影响油田野外作业人员发生心理障碍的危险因素。重度紧张者、中度紧张者的慢性疾病患病率均高于正常者(P0.05)。结论:男性、有倒班、吸烟、饮酒情况的油田野外作业人员心理障碍发生率较高,且油田野外作业人员职业紧张程度越高,越容易增加心理障碍以及慢性疾病的发生风险。  相似文献

Shift work has potentially adverse effects on health, particularly on sleep. The purpose of the present study was to assess sleep parameters among personnel working in oil and gas offshore installations in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One hundred and seventy-nine subjects were asked to complete a sleep questionnaire with multiple-choice answers. Offshore workers were divided into two groups according to their work schedule: (1) fixed daytime workers (n = 86; age: 35.8 ± 9.6 yrs) and (2) shift (n = 87) or night (n = 6) workers (total n = 93; age: 37.7 ± 9.7 yrs). Shift/night workers reported poor sleep more frequently than the daytime workers (20.4% vs. 1.2%, p < 0.01), as well as habitual difficulty in falling asleep (15.1% vs. 4.7%, p < 0.01), long latency of sleep onset (28% vs. 7%, p < 0.01), fragmented sleep (45.2% vs. 16.3%, p < 0.01), short sleep episodes (44.1% vs. 16.3%, p < 0.01), irregular bedtimes (29.0% vs. 12.8%, p < 0.01), and feeling tired upon awakening (15.1% vs. 3.5%, p < 0.01). Habitual napping and loud snoring were reported twice as often in shift/night than in day workers (p < 0.01). Nightmares, somnambulism, and unpleasant feeling in the legs were equality reported by both groups (p > 0.05). Few offshore workers had sought medical help for their sleep problems. A higher number of shift/night workers reported feelings of sadness compared with day workers (26.9% vs. 9.3%, p < 0.01). The findings of this study show that subjective reports of sleep-related problems are quite common among Brazilian offshore shift workers. Reliance on self-reported sleep problems and a cross-sectional design are the main limitations of our study.  相似文献

Objective

To determine the impact factors of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and the knowledge of TB prevention and treatment policy among health care workers (HCWs) in different types of hospitals and explore the strategies for improving TB prevention and control in medical institutions in China.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the risk of TB infection and personnel occupational protection among HCWs who directly engage in medical duties in one of two public hospitals. Each potential participant completed a structured questionnaire and performed a tuberculin skin test (TST). Factors associated with LTBI were identified by logistic regression analysis.

Results

Seven hundred twelve HCWs completed questionnaires and 74.3% (n = 529) took the TST or had previous positive results. The TST-positive prevalence was 58.0% (n = 127) in the infectious disease hospital and 33.9% (n = 105) in the non-TB hospital. The duration of employment in the healthcare profession (6–10 years vs. ≤5 years [OR = 1.89; 95% CI = 1.10, 3.25] and>10 vs. ≤5[OR = 1.80; 95% CI = 1.20, 2.68]), type of hospital (OR = 2.40; 95% CI = 1.59, 3.62), and ever-employment in a HIV clinic or ward (OR = 1.87; 95% CI = 1.08, 3.26)were significantly associated with LTBI. The main reasons for an unwillingness to accept TST were previous positive TST results (70.2%) and concerns about skin reaction (31.9%).

Conclusion

A high prevalence of TB infections was observed among HCWs working in high-risk settings and with long professional experiences in Henan Province in China. Comprehensive guidelines should be developed for different types of medical institutions to reduce TB transmission and ensure the health of HCWs.  相似文献

The occupational exposure to electric and magnetic fields during various work tasks at seven 110 kV substations in Finland's Tampere region was studied. The aim was to investigate if the action values (10 kV/m for the E‐field and 500 µT for the B‐field) of the EU Directive 2004/40/EC were exceeded. Electric and magnetic fields were measured during the following work tasks: (1) walking or operating devices on the ground; (2) working from a service platform; (3) working around the power transformer on the ground or using a ladder; and (4) changing a bulb from a man hoist. In work task 2 “working from a service platform” the measured electric field (maximum value 16.6 kV/m) exceeded 10 kV/m in three cases. In the future it is important to study if the limit value (10 mA/m2) of Directive 2004/40/EC is exceeded at 110 kV substations. Among the pesticides evaluated against the jute pests under field conditions, endosulfan 35 EC at 350 g a.i./ha was found to be the most effective insecticide for controlling semilooper, Bihar hairy caterpillar and myllocerus weevil. Endosulfan and fenpropathrin provided good control of yellow mite as well. Even, endosulfan-treated plots gave maximum fibre and stick yield with greater benefit–cost ratio (BCR) over others. Next to endosulfan and chlorpyriphos, neemazal (azadirachtin 50,000 ppm) are useful and safer options against semilooper, Bihar having caterpillar, myllocerus and yellow mite. Methoxyfenocide 10 EC at 200g a.i./ha provided good control (70.60%) of S. obliqua even after 14 days of spraying, but it was not effective against other pests of jute. Further, almost similar efficacy of neemazal and chlorpyriphos was found against the pest complex of jute and based on BCR, neemazal could be an alternative choice over chlorpyriphos.  相似文献

目的 了解我国二、三级医疗机构医疗纠纷的发生水平、解决方式及赔偿情况,为公立医院医疗纠纷的解决和医疗责任的赔付模式的建立提供科学依据。方法 通过整群抽样选取山西、河北、福建、黑龙江、北京5个省市二、三级27所公立医院,采用统一的问卷调查方式,分别对二、三级医院2011—2013年的基本情况、医疗纠纷发生及医疗责任赔偿等进行调查分析。结果 二、三级医院百名医生医疗纠纷发生率分别为7.96和4.85,医疗纠纷非诉讼解决方式分别是92.72%和82.58%,医疗保险赔偿额分别占赔偿总额29.35%和24.41%。结论 目前我国仍处于医疗纠纷高发期, 医疗纠纷解决的主要途径是非诉讼解决方式,医疗责任的赔付主要来源是医院赔偿。  相似文献

PurposeThe management of the occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issue of great scientific, social and economic significance, was under intense negotiations at European level over the last twenty years; the Directive 2013/35/EU is the new legislative tool. The presented study deals with the practical aspects of the Directive’s implementation.MethodsThe appropriate, extensive measurements and the overall EMF exposure assessments (i.e. exposure mapping, identification of hot spots, proposition of solutions) were conducted in specific workplaces, including power production, railway, broadcasting, clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems, industrial and research sites, as well as common office workplaces.ResultsThe vast majority of the performed EMF assessments did not reveal occupational overexposures; moreover in most of the cases, even the general public exposure limits (in the above occupational areas) were not exceeded. The very few localized overexposures detected, were manageable on the basis of the technical and organizational OHS principles.On the contrary, the maintenance procedures of the EMF emitting equipment, as recorded in this survey, presented overexposures revealing a challenging field.ConclusionsThis study lays a firm basis for the clarification of the occupational EMF environment, where potential exposures might be high. The proper risk assessment demands precise exposure identification and deep understanding of the EMF nature and hazards. Misconceptions range from the common exposure overestimation to the rarer case of the maintenance hazards underestimation, while attention is needed concerning the proper application of the complex limiting system of the Directive.  相似文献

Microhabitat use and habitat partitioning for 10 darter species (Percidae: Etheostomatini) were studied by direct observation (snorkeling) at five sites in the Elk River drainage, West Virginia, U.S.A. We used canonical discriminant analysis and univariate tests to determine microhabitat variables that were important in segregating species. Darter species were segregated by depth, substrate size, and water velocity. In addition, Percina typically occurred in the water column, whereas species of Etheostoma were benthic and segregated by occurring under, between, and on top of rocks.  相似文献
