The aim of this study was to estimate the size of the home range used by individual Cape pangolins ( Manis temminckii ). The study was conducted in 1991–95 at Sengwa Wildlife Research Institute, Gokwe, Zimbabwe. Radio‐telemetry was used to repeatedly locate study pangolins. Home range area was estimated from the location of the burrows used by each pangolin. It was established that pangolins must be tracked for 85+ days to generate a reliable estimate of home range. The size of home ranges, determined from 1141 tracking days of data for 10 pangolins (3·0–15·8 kg body mass) that were each tracked for at least 85 days, was from 0·17 to 11·07 km2. Larger (older) pangolins used more burrows and had larger home ranges than smaller (younger) pangolins. The data indicate that large adult males had larger home ranges than large adult females. Within each sex, the home ranges were adjacent to each other with only slight overlap at the boundaries. There was clear overlap of home ranges between males and females.  相似文献

Creek chub Semotilus atromaculatus from two PCB contaminated streams (Clear Creek and Richland Creek) at three locations and a reference stream (Little Indian Creek), Indiana, U.S.A., were examined to determine if age class structure and growth variables were correlated with in‐situ PCB exposure. Approximately five to 15 fish were captured weekly during the spring spawning season and monthly thereafter for a 12 month period. Fish collected ranged from 25 to 267 mm total length (LT). Throughout the course of this study, no spawning activity was observed at either location in Clear Creek, although some very small young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) creek chub fry were observed at the downstream location by late summer. Creek chub nests were observed in both Richland Creek and Little Indian Creek but YOY were common only in Little Indian Creek. Exposure to PCBs was shown to both enhance and decrease growth in varied laboratory tests; subtle but significant gender‐specific differences in the growth of creek chub populations between the sites were observed. Creek chub up to 24 months in age from Clear Creek and Richland Creek were significantly larger (both LT and mass for males and LT for females) than reference site creek chub. This trend was reversed for creek chub aged ≥24 months as the reference site fish were consistently larger with reference males weighing significantly more. Older age classes of creek chub were missing in areas of higher PCB contamination. Female population growth rates and individual instantaneous growth rates were consistently higher at the reference site in comparison to the PCB‐contaminated sites. Calculation of ‘functional b’(as a condition factor) did indicate that growth enhancement in young males did occur at the most contaminated site and reductions in growth (mass relative to LT) occurred in females from all contaminated sites. Furthermore, long‐term survivorship for females was reduced in the PCB‐contaminated streams. All of these subtle alterations in growth would not have been observed if males and females had not been analysed separately.  相似文献

The effects of habitat loss and limitation on effective population size and inbreeding rates of Walia ibex (Capra walie) were assessed at Simien Mountains National Park. Total direct census was conducted in 2009. Historical data were obtained from park offices and literatures. Effective population sizes (Ne), inbreeding rates (ΔF) and heterozygosity losses to the whole and subdivided population per habitat were estimated. Correlations (r) between the two repeated direct censuses were positive (r = 0.99, P < 0.01). The mean Ne and ΔF (%/year) per study sites were 65.34 ± 59.45 and 0.0286 ± 0.032, respectively. The ΔF of the whole population of C. walie was 0.228 ± 0.011. The ΔF was negatively correlated with Ne (r = ?0.799, P < 0.05). The mean ΔF per fragmented habitat ranged from 0.3 (Cheneck) to 7.7% (Buait ras). The highest ΔFs per year were observed in Buait ras (7.7%), Adarmaz (7.4%) and Sankaber (4.5%). The mean heterozygosity loss per total population was 0.235 ± 0.42, which was about 23.5%. The differences in Ne and ΔF among the population per habitat were the results of habitat limitation, which in turn reduce the genetic variability and foster losses of heterozygosity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Ciliates are often important members of aquatic communities in terms of their biomass, productivity, trophic roles, or numerical abundance. The interaction of metazoan predators with ciliates will be mediated by a number of biotic factors, including the potential of ciliate populations for growth, the relative size of ciliates and metazooplankton, the species structure of the metazooplankton, and the defenses of ciliates. This paper reviews some of the recent laboratory an field data pertaining to these particular factor. Studies have generally shown that metazoans can reduce ciliate population growth rates, but this impact varies greatly with the ciliate and metazoans involved. Smaller ciliates are generally more vulnerable to metazoan predators than larger species, although this relationship will be affected by the defenses a ciliate may possess. The structure of the metazooplankton community itself will also affect ciliatemetazoan interactions. The suppression of ciliate populations by metazoans has important ecological consequences, and more study is needed to understand the interaction of these groups in aquatic systems.  相似文献

Abstract A total of 70 species of gamasid mites (7485 individuals) were collected from the body surface of 38 species of small mammals (3023 individuals) during an investigation of 13 counties of western Yunnan, China, from 1990 to 1996. Most species of gamasid mites have more females (80% 100%) than males (P <0.01). Exceptions are Haemogamasus gongshanensis where males outnumber females (P < 0.01) and Haemolaelaps glasgowi where there are similar numbers of males and females (P > 0.05). No larva was found in most of the mite species. The proportion of individuals at the immature stages (mainly protonymphs and deutonymphs) in most mite species is small (0–12.84%) compared to the adults (P < 0.01). Exceptions are Ornithonyssus bacoti and Haemolaelaps glasgowi where 62.84% and 49.48% respectively are nymphs. The biased sex ratios may reflect the probable different bloodsucking preferences and parthenogenesis of the gamasid mites. The absence of larvae and a low proportion of nymph stages in most mite species probably reflect that the larvae or nymphs of most mite species are non‐feeding or non‐blood sucking and are in their hosts' nests. Another possibility is that some species directly produce protonymphs or even deutonymphs without eggs and larvae which makes it difficult to find the larval stage.  相似文献

1990~ 1 996年对中国云南西部 1 3个县进行了调查 ,从所捕获的 38种、30 2 3只小哺乳动物体表采集到革螨 70种、7485只。绝大多数革螨的雌性个体比例 ( 80 %~ 1 0 0 % )高于其雄性个体比例 (P <0 .0 1 ) ,唯贡山血革螨Haemogamasusgongshanensis和格氏血厉螨Haemolaelapsglasgowi例外。贡山血革螨的雄性个体比例高于其雌性个体比例 (P <0 .0 1 ) ,格氏血厉螨的雌雄比例接近 (P >0 .0 5)。在现场采集中 ,绝大多数革螨种类未见幼虫阶段。除柏氏禽刺螨Ornithonyssusbacoti及格氏血厉螨Haemolaelapsglasgowi的若虫比例 (分别为 62 .84%和 49.48% )较高外 ,绝大多数革螨的未成熟期 (主要是前若虫和后若虫 )比例( 0~ 1 2 .84% )明显低于成虫期比例 (P <0 .0 1 )。采自小哺乳动物体表革螨雌雄性比的不同可能与雌雄螨的吸血习性及孤雌生殖有关。绝大多数革螨在其宿主体表缺乏幼虫阶段以及若虫比例很低提示 :这些革螨的幼虫或若虫阶段可能不取食或不吸血 ,主要生活在宿主的窝巢内。另一种可能原因是某些革螨的雌螨可能直接产前若虫或后若虫 ,因此难以从宿主体表发现幼虫。  相似文献

Wild and captive zebra finches (Taenopygia guttata), like severalother species, produce a male-biased sex ratio at fledging whenfood is scarce. This is due to primary sex-ratio adjustmentand female-biased nestling mortality. Given that young femalesfledging at low body masses have been shown to have low fecundityas adults, lower returns to parents from producing female offspringin conditions of restricted food has been raised as a functionalexplanation (Trivers and Willard's hypothesis of adaptive sexualinvestment; 1973). However, an alternative, mechanistic hypothesisis that under restricted conditions female chicks are more costlyto produce. In consequence, lower returns to parents under theseconditions would happen earlier in the life of female offspringrather than later. To test this hypothesis, I hand-reared chickson a food gradient. In the absence of parent-offspring and sib-sibinteractions, final body mass and growth rates for females werelower in conditions of restricted food. For males, final bodymass and growth rates did not differ with food condition. Lowfemale growth rates in food-restricted conditions might be onepotential mechanism causing female-biased mortality in birds.More importantly, this result is the strongest evidence yetof female offspring experiencing higher marginal fitness benefitsfrom additional food than males and it has implications forprimary and secondary sex-ratio adjustment. Also, as this mechanismhas been shown in the absence of parent-offspring interactions,significant questions can now be raised as to how parental andoffspring behavior interact in their effects on secondary sex-ratioadjustment.  相似文献

In angiosperms, dioecy has arisen in 871–5,000 independent events, distributed in approximately 43% of the flowering families. The reproductive superiority of unisexuals has been the favorite explanation for the evolution of separate sexes. However, in several instances, the observed reproductive performance of unisexuals, if any, does not seem to compensate for the loss of one of the sex functions. The involvement of fitness components not directly associated with reproduction is a plausible hypothesis that has received little attention. Life‐history traits recently recognized as predictors of plant performance were compared among males, females, and hermaphrodites of a rare trioecious Opuntia robusta population in the field, using the cladode as the study unit. Cladode mortality by domestic herbivores was common and higher in females and hermaphrodites than in males. Males, females, or both displayed lower shrinkage and higher rates of survival, growth, and reproductive frequency than hermaphrodites. Unisexuals simultaneously outperformed hermaphrodites in demographic traits known to compete for common limiting resources, such as the acceleration of reproductive maturation (progenesis) and survival. A meta‐analysis combining the outcomes of each of the analyzed life‐history traits revealed a tendency of males (d++ = 1.03) and females (d++ = 0.93) to outperform hermaphrodites in presumably costly demographic options. Clonality is induced by human or domestic animal plant sectioning; and males and females highly exceeded hermaphrodites in their clonality potential by a factor of 8.3 and 5.3, respectively. The performances of unisexuals in the analyzed life‐history traits may enhance their reproductive potential in the long run and their clonality potential and could explain the observed increase of unisexuality in the population. Life‐history traits can be crucial for the evolution of unisexuality, but their impact appears to be habitat specific and may involve broad ontogenetic changes.  相似文献

In a longitudinal study of individually identified wild baboons in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, we collected data on physical development and reproductive maturation. Confirming and extending our earlier results, we demonstrated that the ratio of ages at which developmental milestones occur in the field as compared to those under extensive provisioning or in captivity were approximately 5:3. The age range for some developmental milestones was quite narrow and discrete, while for others there was considerable between-individual variability and more gradual changes. For infants, only the change from pink to gray of the paracallosal skin occurred within a brief age span. For older animals two important developmental events are readily identified and occur within a fairly narrow age range: Rapid enlargement of testes at 5 to 6 years for males and onset of menarche at 4 to 5 ½ years for females. In the present report, we considered some consequences of accelerated or delayed maturation. We further explored the need to employ different age-class criteria for different research problems.  相似文献

利用2012年2月至2013年1月在钱塘江桐庐段水域的渔获物中采集的样本,对该水域花(Hemibarbus maculatus Bleeker)种群的叉长和体质量组成,性别组成和性比、年龄组成等渔业种群结构特征进行了初步研究。结果表明,渔获群体的叉长范围为11.2~33.1 cm,平均叉长为(20.2±3.45)cm;体质量范围为26.0~540.8 g,平均体质量为(171.6±81.9)g。雌性个体大于雄性个体,雌性渔获群体的平均叉长为(23.5±3.58)cm,平均体质量为(183.2±79.87)g;雄性渔获群体的平均叉长为(22.7±3.77)cm,平均体质量为(168.8±78.99)g。雌性群体数量多于雄性群体数量,雌、雄性比约为1.47∶1。渔获群体由4个年龄组组成,以2龄为主。  相似文献

Management of species of conservation concern requires knowledge of demographic parameters, such as rates of recruitment, survival, and growth. In the Caribbean, hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) have been historically exploited in huge numbers to satisfy trade in their shells and meat. In the present study, we estimated growth rate of juvenile hawksbill turtles around Anegada, British Virgin Islands, using capture–mark–recapture of 59 turtles over periods of up to 649 days. Turtles were recaptured up to six times, having moved up to 5.9 km from the release location. Across all sizes, turtles grew at an average rate of 9.3 cm year−1 (range 2.3–20.3 cm year−1), and gained mass at an average of 3.9 kg year−1 (range 850 g–16.1 kg year−1). Carapace length was a significant predictor of growth rate and mass gain, but there was no relationship between either variable and sea surface temperature. These are among the fastest rates of growth reported for this species, with seven turtles growing at a rate that would increase their body size by more than half per year (51–69% increase in body length). This study also demonstrates the importance of shallow water reef systems for the developmental habitat for juvenile hawksbill turtles. Although growth rates for posthatching turtles in the pelagic, and turtles larger than 61 cm, are not known for this population, the implications of this study are that Caribbean hawksbill turtles in some areas may reach body sizes suggesting sexual maturity in less time than previously considered.  相似文献

By 15 June, 82% of the catch of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar kelts had been taken from the middle part of River Teno, northern Scandinavia. The median date of capture was 4 June for males and 8 June for females. Salmon of 1–4 sea–winters (SW) of both sexes survived spawning to return to sea as kelts. Among males, 1 SW kelts were caught earliest in the spring and 3 SW latest, but among females 4 SW were earliest, then 3 SW and finally 1 and 2 SW. There were 17 river and sea–age combinations among the kelts compared with 23 among the ascending salmon. The smolt age distribution and the mean smolt age differed significantly only between female 2 SW ascending salmon (3·97 years) and kelts (4·14 years). The proportion of 1 SW females was higher and that of 3 SW males lower among kelts than among ascending salmon. The proportion of males among 1 SW ascending salmon was 80% but among kelts only 57%. Similarly, the proportion of males among 3 SW fish was 21% for ascending salmon but only 7% for kelts. Hence overwinter mortality was higher among males. Male and female kelts of 1 and female kelts of 2 SWhad a greater mean length than ascending salmon in corresponding groups indicating a better survival of larger fish within an age group. Grilse ascend rivers after most kelts have left, but the main catch of ascending 2–3 SW salmon takes place concurrently with kelts leaving the river, inadvertently targeting kelts in the fishery.  相似文献

Evaluating the relative importance of ecological drivers responsible for natural population fluctuations in size is challenging. Longitudinal studies where most individuals are monitored from birth to death and where environmental conditions are known provide a valuable resource to characterize complex ecological interactions. We used a recently developed approach to decompose the observed fluctuation in population growth of the red deer population on the Isle of Rum into contributions from climate, density and their interaction and to quantify their relative importance. We also quantified the contribution of individual covariates, including phenotypic and life-history traits, to population growth. Fluctuations in composition in age and sex classes ((st)age structure) of the population contributed substantially to the population dynamics. Density, climate, birth weight and reproductive status contributed less and approximately equally to the population growth. Our results support the contention that fluctuations in the population's (st)age structure have important consequences for population dynamics and underline the importance of including information on population composition to understand the effect of human-driven changes on population performance of long-lived species.  相似文献

Where animal home ranges overlap extensively, objectively identifyingexclusive areas within individual ranges has been difficult,particularly in species lacking overt territorial behaviors.By analyzing the overlap between successively smaller core areasamong individuals in a population of the long-lived Australianskink, the sleepy lizard (Tiliqua rugosa), we objectively determinedexclusive areas within animal ranges. Using 4-year radio trackingdata, we found that ranges consisted of relatively large sallyzones (mean 66–80% total range), around home ranges withmultinucleate cores strongly associated with key refuge sites.Total range and home range area varied significantly among years,being smaller in a drought year. Total ranges overlapped extensivelybetween and within sexes, but for both sexes, intrasexual overlapof inner range cores rapidly approached zero, suggesting intrasexualterritoriality. Intersexual inner core overlap reflected thisspecies socially monogamous mating system. But, male overlapof female ranges and inner cores was consistently higher thanfemale-male overlap. Refuges and/or mates may be defended resourceswithin these core areas, although aggressive behavioral interactionswere rarely observed. In the extensively overlapping sally zones,males shared space with females other than their principal partner.In productive years, with larger home ranges and more extensiveoverlap, some lizards associated with extra partners, suggestingthat males opportunistically use sally zones for polygyny. Consequently,we suggest that benefits to females from male association maychange with environmental quality, such that if food resourcesare low, monogamy may be favored if females increase foragingefficiency as a consequence of male vigilance during pairing.  相似文献
