The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of tooth enamel in a monenergetic neutron beam of 14 MeV was studied, with the aim to evaluate the relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity. Three samples of tooth enamel powder were irradiated in air. A whole tooth and a powdered sample were irradiated in a geometrical PMMA phantom, in order to simulate the real exposure of a tooth inside a human head. The measured dose in enamel was compared to the dose calculated by Monte Carlo simulation. The relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity using different reference materials (air, water and enamel) was evaluated as well. Large differences in sensitivity values were found depending on the reference material: the obtained relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity was 0.47±0.09 for enamel and 0.15±0.03 for water. A comparison with results in fast neutron fields is reported.  相似文献

Enamel proteins are proteins synthesized by ameloblast cells. These proteins are secreted into the enamel extracellular matrix where they nucleate and regulate the growth of hydroxyapatite crystals to form the mineralized enamel covering the crown of the teeth. Although the exact role of these proteins in enamel mineralization is just beginning to be elucidated, new studies suggest that these proteins might have functions outside enamel formation. Furthermore, extracts of enamel proteins are currently being used to regenerate periodontal tissues destroyed by periodontal disease and new studies suggest that they might have chondrogenic and osteogenic properties. These new functions of enamel proteins will be the focus of this review.  相似文献

Enamel is the hardest tissue with the highest degree of mineralization protecting the dental pulp from injury in vertebrates. The ameloblasts differentiated from ectoderm-derived epithelial cells are a single cell layer and are important for the enamel formation and mineralization. Wnt/β-catenin signaling has been proven to exert an important role in the mineralization of bone, dentin and cementum. Little was known about the regulatory mechanism of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in ameloblasts during amelogenesis, especially in the mineralization of enamel. To investigate the role of β-catenin in ameloblasts, we established Amelx-Cre; β-catenin?ex3fl/fl (CA-β-catenin) mice, which could constitutive activate β-catenin in ameloblasts. It showed the delayed mineralization and eventual hypomineralization in the incisor enamel of CA-β-catenin mice. Meanwhile, the amelogenesis-related proteinases Mmp20 and Klk4 were decreased in the incisors of CA-β-catenin mice. These data indicated that β-catenin plays an essential role in differentiation and function of ameloblasts during amelogenesis.  相似文献

Linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH), the presence of linear defects of dental enamel formed during periods of growth disruption, is frequently analyzed in physical anthropology as evidence for childhood health in the past. However, a wide variety of methods for identifying and interpreting these defects in archaeological remains exists, preventing easy cross‐comparison of results from disparate studies. This article compares a standard approach to identifying LEH using the naked eye to the evidence of growth disruption observed microscopically from the enamel surface. This comparison demonstrates that what is interpreted as evidence of growth disruption microscopically is not uniformly identified with the naked eye, and provides a reference for the level of consistency between the number and timing of defects identified using microscopic versus macroscopic approaches. This is done for different tooth types using a large sample of unworn permanent teeth drawn from several post‐medieval London burial assemblages. The resulting schematic diagrams showing where macroscopic methods achieve more or less similar results to microscopic methods are presented here and clearly demonstrate that “naked‐eye” methods of identifying growth disruptions do not identify LEH as often as microscopic methods in areas where perikymata are more densely packed. We analyzed the subcellular distribution of -catenin in the cap-stage enamel organ and compared it with the expression of E- and P-cadherin by using confocal laser microscopy. The amounts of the molecules in the cytoplasm and the nucleus showed regional variations in the enamel organ, whereas cell surface-associated -catenin was ubiquitous. In both the enamel knot and the inner dental epithelium, -catenin was detected in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus. However, the amount of nuclear -catenin was apparently higher in the enamel knot than in the inner dental epithelium. P-cadherin also gave a stronger signal in the enamel knot than in other parts of the enamel organ. In the stellate reticulum, where E-cadherin was preferentially expressed, as well as in the cervical loop and outer dental epithelium, -catenin was localized in the cytoplasm but not in the nucleus. The nuclear localization of -catenin in the enamel knot suggests a specific activation of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway. A coincident upregulation of P-cadherin was observed in this area. Altogether, these observations suggest the possibility of a linkage between cell adhesion and Wnt signaling in the enamel knot.  相似文献

The application of microtomography (mCT) to dental morphological studies has unveiled a new source of palaeobiological information, particularly in the analysis of the internal structures of teeth. In this study, we assess the expression of talonid crests at the enamel and dentine surfaces in lower permanent and second deciduous molars (M2 and dm2) of H. sapiens, H. neanderthalensis and Atapuerca-Sima de los Huesos (SH) hominins. In modern humans, talonid crests are described exclusively in the deciduous teeth (Korenhof, 1982) and interpreted as a primitive mammalian remnant of the talonid attachment to the trigonid. Here we report for the first time the expression of talonid crests of deciduous and permanent molars in H. sapiens, H. neanderthalensis and Middle Pleistocene hominins. We discuss possible evolutionary interpretations and suggest the importance of recording this feature in future studies.  相似文献

The formation of lateral enamel in Neandertal anterior teeth has been the subject of recent studies. When compared to the anterior teeth of modern humans from diverse regions (Point Hope, Alaska; Newcastle upon Tyne, England; southern Africa), Neandertal anterior teeth appear to fall within the modern human range of variation for lateral enamel formation time. However, the lateral enamel growth curves of Neandertals are more linear than those of these modern human samples. Other researchers have found that the lateral enamel growth curves of Neandertals are more linear than those of Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic modern humans as well. The statistical significance of this apparent difference between Neandertal and modern human lateral enamel growth curves is analyzed here. The more linear Neandertal enamel growth curves result from the smaller percentage of total perikymata located in the cervical halves of their teeth. The percentage of total perikymata in the cervical halves of teeth is therefore compared between the Neandertal sample (n=56 teeth) and each modern human population sample: Inuit (n=65 teeth), southern African (n=114 teeth), and northern European (n=115 teeth). There are 18 such comparisons (6 tooth types, Neandertals vs. each of the three modern human populations). Eighteen additional comparisons are made among the modern human population samples. Statistically significant differences are found for 16 of the 18 Neandertal vs. modern human comparisons but for only two of the 18 modern human comparisons. Statistical analyses repeated for subsamples of less worn teeth show a similar pattern. Because surface curvature is thought to affect perikymata spacing, we also conducted measurements to assess surface curvature in thirty teeth. Our analysis shows that surface curvature is not a factor in this lateral enamel growth difference between Neandertals and modern humans.  相似文献

Background radiation dose is used in dosimetry for estimating occupational doses of radiation workers or determining radiation dose of an individual following accidental exposure. In the present study, the absorbed dose and the background radiation level are determined using the electron spin resonance (ESR) method on tooth samples. The effect of using different tooth surfaces and teeth exposed with single medical X-rays on the absorbed dose are also evaluated. A total of 48 molars of position 6–8 were collected from 13 district hospitals in Peninsular Malaysia. Thirty-six teeth had not been exposed to any excessive radiation, and 12 teeth had been directly exposed to a single X-ray dose during medical treatment prior to extraction. There was no significant effect of tooth surfaces and exposure with single X-rays on the measured absorbed dose of an individual. The mean measured absorbed dose of the population is 34 ± 6.2 mGy, with an average tooth enamel age of 39 years. From the slope of a regression line, the estimated annual background dose for Peninsular Malaysia is 0.6 ± 0.3 mGy y−1. This value is slightly lower than the yearly background dose for Malaysia, and the radiation background dose is established by ESR tooth measurements on samples from India and Russia.  相似文献

In Primates, enamel thickness variation stems from an evolutionary interplay between functional/adaptive constraints (ecology) and the strict control mechanisms of the morphogenetic program. Most studies on primate enamel thickness have primarily considered the permanent teeth, while the extent of covariation in tooth enamel thickness distribution between deciduous and permanent counterparts remains poorly investigated. In this test study on nine extant and fossil hominids we investigated the degree of covariation in enamel proportions between 25 pairs of mandibular dm2 and M1 by a so-called “lateral enamel thickness diphyodontic index”. The results did not provide an unambiguous picture, but rather suggest complex patterns likely resulting from the influence of many interactive factors. Future research should test the congruence of the “diphyodontic signal” between the anterior and the postcanine dentition, as well as between enamel and the enamel-dentine junction topography.  相似文献

The nearly ubiquitous presence of a continuous crest connecting the protoconid and metaconid of the lower molars (often referred to as the middle trigonid crest), is one of several dental traits that distinguish Homo neanderthalensis from Homo sapiens. This study examined variation in trigonid crest patterns on the enamel and dentine surfaces to (1) evaluate the concordance between the morphology of trigonid crests at the inner dentine and the outer enamel surfaces; (2) examine their developmental origin(s); and (3) examine trait polarity through comparison with Australopithecus africanus and Pan. The sample included 73 H. neanderthalensis, 67 contemporary H. sapiens, 5 A. africanus, and 24 Pan lower molars. Results indicate general agreement in the morphology observed on the dentine and enamel surfaces. All but one H. neanderthalensis molar shows some trigonid crest development, whereas trigonid crests occur in low frequency in contemporary humans. Pan and A. africanus both also show high frequencies of a continuous trigonid crest. However, the origin of the trigonid crest differs among groups. H. neanderthalensis uniquely possesses a 'middle' trigonid crest that originates from the mesial accessory ridge of one or both cusps. Based on our results we suggest that presence of a continuous middle trigonid crest at the dentine surface is primitive and the lack of any trigonid crest is derived. Genetic drift may explain the high frequency of trigonid crests in H.neanderthalensis. However, H. neanderthalensis still appears to be derived relative to Pan and A. africanus in its high frequency of the mesial-mesial trigonid crestconfiguration.  相似文献

Linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH), a type of enamel defect reflecting nonspecific physiological stress, has traditionally been used by bioarchaeologists to assess human health. Initially, measurements of defect width were used to estimate the duration of stress episodes. More recently, methods of counting within-defect perikymata (enamel growth increments) were developed to more accurately assess duration. Because perikymata are often not continuously visible within defects, while widths can usually be measured, the primary purpose of this article was to determine if, under restrictive conditions, the widths of LEH defects might be used as relative indicators of stress episode duration. Using a set of dental replicas from the prehistoric Irene Mound (1150-1400 A.D.), this study also investigated potential sources of variation in defect widths and how often defect widths could be measured and within-defect perikymata counted. Of 120 defects, only 47 contained both measurable defect widths and total within-defect perikymata, while 79 had measurable defect widths. Regression analysis revealed that, for these 47 defects, defect widths were more strongly related to the total number of within-defect perikymata than they were to crown region or tooth type. Although wide prediction intervals indicated that a defect's width could not be used to predict the number of within-defect perikymata for an individual, narrower confidence intervals associated with hypothetical mean population widths suggested that mean defect widths might be used to rank populations in terms of relative average stress episode duration.  相似文献

Beta–catenin is a multi–functional molecule that is involved in both cell–cell adhesion and signaling. We analyzed changes in β–catenin gene expression during mouse molar tooth development by in situ hybridization. Prominent up–regulation of the expression of this gene was evident exclusively in the enamel knot at the early cap stage. During the cap and bell stages, the enamel knot, inner dental epithelium, and differentiating stratum intermedium expressed the β–catenin gene more strongly than other parts of the enamel organ. During these stages, the strength of the gene expression changed heterogeneously within the inner dental epithelium and stratum intermedium. However, the heterogeneity was not evident at the late bell stage, when the cells in the inner dental epithelium had differentiated into ameloblasts at the cusp tip. No spatiotemporal change in β–catenin gene expression was apparent in the dental papilla except for the cells that differentiated into odontoblasts, which became negative for the expression of the gene after their differentiation. Thus, the up-regulated expression of the β–catenin gene was strongly associated with epithelial morphogenesis. These findings raise the possibility that the up–regulation of the gene expression and the stabilization of the protein by Wnt signaling play a role in the regulation of the activities of β–catenin in tooth morphogenesis.  相似文献

It has become a widespread practice to convert δ(18)O(p) values measured in human and animal dental enamel to a corresponding value of δ(18)O(w) and compare these data with mapped δ(18)O(w) groundwater or meteoric water values to locate the region where the owner of the tooth lived during the formation of the enamel. Because this is a regression procedure, the errors associated with the predicted δ(18)O(w) values will depend critically on the correlation between the comparative data used to perform the regression. By comparing four widely used regression equations we demonstrate that the smallest 95% error is likely to be greater than ±1% in δ(18)O(w) , and could be as large as ±3.5%. These values are significantly higher than those quoted in some of the recent literature, and measurements with errors at the higher end of this range would render many of the published geographical attributions statistically unsupportable. We suggest that the simplest solution to this situation is to make geographical attributions based on the direct comparison of measured values of δ(18)O(p) rather than on predicted values of δ(18)O(w).  相似文献

Like in most European countries, the population of the European beaver (Castor fiber) in Slovakia became extinct in the nineteenth century. Thanks to reintroduction of beavers in neighboring states, after a long break the beaver returns also to the territory of Slovakia. This has particularly affected the present distribution of beavers in the Slovak Republic. The first aim of the work was to find phylogenetic similarities of the northeastern Slovak population with the Ukrainian and Polish ones comparing their adult skulls and mandibles on the basis of craniometric measurements. A total of 28 measurements were taken on each skull and mandible. The statistical evaluation showed that the most similar were the Slovak and Ukrainian skulls, while in 8 cranial parameters the Ukrainian and Polish populations were found to be significantly different. The second aim was related to their ability to fell trees. The enamel thickness of incisors in the jaw and mandible were compared within the Slovak sample by measuring for 18 teeth, which were previously scanned by the X-Ray Computer Tomography. The results showed that the average thickness of incisors enamel in the mandible was 0.34 mm, while the incisors of the maxilla had enamel approximately 0.29 mm thick.  相似文献
