Though light conditions are known to affect the development and anti-predation strategies of several aquatic species, relatively little is known about how different species react to light, or how light can affect these species during different points in their life-cycle. In this study, we used four sympatric anuran tadpoles(Bufo gargarizans, B. melanostictus, Pelophylax nigromaculatus and Microhyla fissipes) as animal system to examine species-specific activities of the underdoing different light intensity treatments, so as to better understand how they respond to light. We exposed four different species of tadpoles to 1660 and 14 lux light intensity treatments and then measured several parameters including development stage, body length and tail length, and as well as their basic activities. The results of this observation and analysis showed that the activities of tadpoles were significantly greater in B. gargarizans and B. melanostictus than in P. nigromaculatus and M. fissipes; and were also significantly greater during times of high light intensity as compared to during low light intensity. Moreover, the observed relationship between species and light intensity was significant. The activities of B. gargarizans and B. melanostictus tadpoles were greater in high light, while the activity of P. nigromaculatus tadpoles was greater in low light intensity, while M. fissipes tadpoles showed no differences in either low or high intensity light. Furthermore, the activities of B. gargarizans, B. melanostictus and M. fissipes tadpoles in terms of developmental stage, body size or tail length did not seem to differ with light intensity, but during early larval developmental period of P. nigromaculatus, the activity of tadpoles was negatively correlated with development stage, but irrelevant to either body size or tail length in different light intensities. These results lead us to conclude the observed activities of the four sympatric anuran tadpoles are closely correlated with their specific anti-predation strategies.  相似文献

Eggs often suffer high levels of predation and, compared with older animals, embryos have few options available for antipredator defence. None the less, hatchlings can escape from many predators to which eggs are vulnerable. I studied early hatching as an antipredator defence of red-eyed treefrog embryos, Agalychnis callidryas, in response to egg predation by social wasps (Polybia rejecta). Red-eyed treefrogs attach their eggs to vegetation overhanging water, where they are exposed to arboreal and aerial predators. Wasps attacked half the egg clutches and killed almost a quarter of the eggs I monitored at a natural breeding site in Panama. Hatching tadpoles fall into the water, where they face aquatic predators. As predicted from improved survival of older hatchlings with aquatic predators, most undisturbed eggs hatched relatively late. However, many younger embryos directly attacked by wasps hatched immediately. Embryos attacked by wasps hatched as much as a third younger than the peak undisturbed hatching age, and most hatching embryos escaped. Thus hatching is an effective defence against wasp predation, and plasticity in hatching stage allows embryos to balance risks from stage-specific egg and larval predators. Wasp-induced hatching is behaviourally similar to the snake-induced hatching previously described in A. callidryas, but occurs in fewer eggs at a time, congruent with the scale of the risk. Individual embryos hatch in response to wasps, which take single eggs, whereas whole clutches hatch in response to snakes, which consume entire clutches. Embryos of A. callidryas thus respond appropriately to graded variation in mortality risks. Copyright 2000 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

In order to clarify the possible effects of high gravity environments on eggs and developing embryos, Rana rugosa and Xenopus laevis fertilized eggs and early embryos were raised in 2 G, 5 G, 7 G and 10 G up to the hatched tadpole stage. The results showed that: (1) High gravity significantly retarded the development of eggs and embryos beginning treatment before the blastula stage and induced various abnormalities, including two heads and microcephally suggesting that high gravity is apt to disrupt the animal-vegital axis. On the other hand, embryos beginning treatment after the gastrula stage showed a striking increase in the number of normal-appearing feeding tadpoles. (2) Autopsy revealed that brains, notochords and muscles were reduced in development and differentiation for embryos and tadpoles developed in high gravity. (3) It seems likely that the system for hydrogen peroxide detoxification develops abnormally in high gravity-treated embryos and tadpoles, which probably results in oxidative stress, leading to considerable cell damage.  相似文献

Abstract. We report on a study of reproduction and development in the Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Vermetus triquetrus from the SE coast of Spain. It is a gonochoristic species. The egg capsules are attached to the inside of the shell, and females brood up to 22 capsules simultaneously (more often 4–10). The capsules hold 10–61 eggs or embryos; the uncleaved eggs are yolk-rich, with a mean diameter of 377.3 μm. A distinct polar lobe occurs during the first cleavage, and blastomere D has discernible qualities after the 4-cell stage. The formation of the mesentoblast 4d occurs at the transition from the 24-cell stage to the 25-cell stage. Gastrulation begins after the 36-cell stage. Internal yolk is the major source of nutrition for the encapsulated embryos, but some nurse eggs (∼ 12%) and some sibling larvae are also ingested by the developing embryos. Hatching occurs during the swimming/crawling pediveliger stage, and metamorphosis is completed outside the capsules soon after hatching. Hence, larval development in Vermetus triquetrus is lecithotrophic intracapsular, with a short free-swimming/crawling phase.  相似文献

Abstract: There has been limited research examining the role that terrestrial habitat characteristics play in influencing persistence of amphibian populations. In this study we investigated the influence of a terrestrial habitat attribute on the distribution of the terrestrial egg‐laying toadlet, Pseudophryne bibronii. Eggs of this species are deposited in depressions, or under leaf litter, and develop to a stage where they can hatch to free swimming tadpoles when water covers breeding sites or embryos are washed into water. Because rainfall can be intermittent, eggs may sit for extended periods in terrestrial nests before sufficient rainfall initiates hatching. Appropriate egg‐laying sites must be chosen by both males and females to ensure embryos survive these periods. A study of 20 sites found that soil pH at sites where P. bibronii were recorded as present was significantly lower than pH at sites where P. bibronii were recorded as absent. To determine whether soil pH influenced the hatching success in P. bibronii, experiments were conducted in which batches of eggs were translocated to local areas with different soil pH. Survival rate of eggs was significantly influenced by relatively small changes in pH, with hatching success higher at lower pH. In a laboratory trial survival of eggs raised on sterilized soil was not affected by soil pH. Fungal infection of eggs was observed in the field and laboratory suggesting that hatching success might be affected via a complex interaction between soil pH, fungi and other soil biota. Choice trials using P. bibronii metamorphs indicated that individuals were capable of distinguishing between small differences in pH. Therefore, distribution of P. bibronii may be influenced by either differential mortality of embryos, or habitat choice by post metamorphic individuals, and further experiments are required to determine the relative importance of these factors.  相似文献

Abstract.  1.  This study investigated the interaction between eggs of the lizard Mabuya longicaudata Hallowell and two species of ant: a lizard egg commensalist ( Paratrechina longicornis Latreille), and an egg predator ( Pheidole taivanensis Forel). The ecological interaction between P. longicornis and lizard eggs was tested, and it was predicted that when the interaction was removed, lizard eggs would be attacked by P. taivanensis .
2. Field observations showed that both ant species actively searched for lizard eggs, and that P. taivanensis typically found new lizard nests earlier than P. longicornis did. Left undisturbed, P. taivanensis predation dramatically reduced lizard egg survival. While P. longicornis usually found nests later, they were able to displace P. taivanensis . As a result, proportional egg survival was higher in nests with P. longicornis (0.95 ± 0.04 eggs) compared to nests without either ant species (0.65 ± 0.09 eggs), or nests occupied by P. taivanensis (0.07 ± 0.02 eggs).
3. When P. longicornis ants were experimentally excluded from lizard nests, the proportion of eggs surviving significantly decreased because of increased P. taivanensis predation. Paratrechina longicornis benefits from water that condenses on the eggs. When this resource disappears P. longicornis abandons the nest, leading to predation of the eggs by P. taivanensis .  相似文献

Golden egg bug ( Phyllomorpha laciniata ) females lay eggs on the backs of both female and male conspecifics. Bugs receive eggs voluntarily and involuntarily, and even when males carry eggs, many eggs are not fertilised by the carrier. Carrying the eggs of another individual is unexpected, particularly if egg carrying bears a cost in survival. We examined the predation risk associated with egg carrying experimentally in the field. P . laciniata individuals were enclosed with workers of one of two ant species, Pheidole pallidula or Cataglyphis piliscapus, which co-occur with the bug in the wild. Pheidole pallidula workers preyed on golden egg bugs and their eggs, but Cataglyphis piliscapus workers did not . In P. pallidula enclosures, golden egg bugs carrying larger egg loads were eaten first. These results suggest that golden egg bugs experience high predation pressure and that egg carrying increases the risk of predation. Due to the direct survival costs associated with egg carrying and the lack of relatedness between the eggs and the carrier, we suggest the golden egg bug as the first known intraspecific parasite in which parasitism is not related to active parental care.  相似文献

We studied the effects of predation and oviposition activity on reproductive success of a late-season moth, Epirrita autumnata by exposing adult females and eggs to predation in their natural habitat in two successive years. Daily survival rates of adult females ranged from 0.4 to 0.8, average being 0.7. Most predation occurred during nights and was caused by harvestmen and other invertebrate predators. Avian predation did not have an effect on adult survival rates, most likely because of the lateness of E. autumnata flight season. Eggs were also preyed upon by invertebrate predators, although a notable proportion of egg mortality was attributable to causes other than predation. Daily survival rates of eggs were more than 0.99. Using modeling based on empirical data on eclosion of female adults, their oviposition behavior and survival rates of adults and eggs, the daily survival rates were translated into population level consequences. Adult predation was estimated to decrease reproductive success of non-outbreaking E. autumnata by 60–85 percent and egg mortality by 20–40 percent. Predation on adult lepidopterans is a mortality factor potentially as relevant as predation in any other life history stage and thus, should not be ignored in studies of population regulation.  相似文献

Eggs and three different stages of premetamorphic tadpoles of moor frog Rana arvalis and common toad Bufo bufo were offered to the following potential predators in acidified lakes: newt Triturus vulgaris , water beetles Rhantus exoletus and Dytiscus lapponicus , dragonfly larvae Leucorrhinia dubia and Aeshna spp., water boatman Notonecta glauca and water bugs, Cymatia bonsdorffi, Glaenocorisa p. propinqua , and Corixa dentipes.
The predation pressure on eggs of R. arvalis was low due to thick jelly. The eggs of B. bufo were not attractive to predators with chewing mouth parts due to unpalatability but predators with sucking mouth parts were not repulsed. Tadpoles of R. arvalis were eaten by all predators but tadpoles of B. bufo were unpalatable to most predators. The predators used in the experiments are the new top predators in acidified fishless lakes. They may contribute to the reduction of populations of R. arvalis in acidified areas.  相似文献

Synopsis Predation on large, energy rich eggs is common in terrestrial and freshwater communities with the eggs of amphibians, reptiles and birds figuring as prominant prey. We might predict that predation on large eggs would also be widespread in marine communities. However, little information is available to test this prediction. We present new evidence for such predation on elasmobranch eggs based on examination of capsules held in museum collections, those collected from beaches, long-term incubations of caged egg capsules, and SCUBA observation. The principal egg predators appear to be gastropods, though vertebrates contribute to mortality of embryonic elasmobranchs. As yet we can only speculate about the effects of egg predation for populations of oviparous elasmobranchs, or about the direct and indirect consequences predation upon their energy-rich eggs may have for marine communities.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the intertidal prosobranch Searlesia dira (Reeve, 1846) was examined with special attention given to variability in the nurse egg to embryo ratio among capsules, among clutches and among geographically isolated populations. Embryos and nurse eggs were distributed among the capsules in a manner consistent with the hypothesis that nurse eggs were genetically predetermined, that each female had a genetically defined nurse egg to embryo ratio, and that each capsule represented a random sample of that ratio. The binomial distribution of embryos and nurse eggs among the capsules resulted in some capsules receiving many more embryos per nurse egg than others. The number of nurse eggs an embryo succeeded in eating was proportional to the number of capsule-mates sharing a capsule. Embryos eating more nurse eggs hatched out at a larger size. Differences in the nurse egg to embryo ratios among capsules in the same clutch were much larger than that of the mean ratios among clutches. Among-site differences in the mean nurse egg to embryo ratios suggest that selection pressure for different mean hatching sizes may have acted on the mean nurse egg to embryo ratios. In contrast to the predictions of optimal hatching size theory, hatching size varied widely within clutches as a consequence of differences in nurse egg to embryo ratios among capsules. This variance may be adaptive for species that lay their eggs months before juveniles emerge into an unpredictable environment, or simply be a consequence of an imperfect mechanism for increasing hatching size.  相似文献

1. Fecundity of a Dikerogammarus villosus population at Spitz was studied in the Austrian Danube during the 3‐year period 2002–2004. Ovigerous females were absent in October and November, and extremely scarce in December when the reproductive season started again slowly. From January to September pre‐copulatory pairs and egg‐carrying females were present. The reproductive cycle lasted for 9–10 months. 2. Various pigmentation phenotypes of D. villosus have been described in the literature. However, no significant differences were found between the reproductive variables studied here and several colour morphs. Mating was size‐assortative; mean body length of males was about 1.3 times greater than that of their potential mates, and the wet weight was approximately twice as heavy. 3. The relationship between the number of embryos per clutch and the wet weight of females was described by a 3‐parameter power equation. The population mean was 43 eggs with a range of five to 194 eggs. Eighty‐two specimens from 1359 D. villosus females had more than 100 eggs: the smallest of these females was 12 mm long (30 mg) wet weight, and the largest, which was 18 mm long (91 mg), had 194 eggs in embryonic development stage 4. 4. Numbers of embryos in developmental stages 2 (early egg stage) and 7 (newly hatched neonates) differed significantly with body wet weight of ovigerous females (P < 0.05). For an average female in the range 10–12 mm (20–30 mg) the number of juveniles in the brood pouch was 74% of the number of stage 2 eggs. This value can be interpreted as the survival rate of eggs. 5. The overall mean egg volume (EV, ±95% CL) of stage 2 eggs of D. villosus was 0.05 ± 0.001 mm3, and EV increased significantly at each stage of development. At stage 6, egg volume had increased by a factor of 2.6, and averaged 0.13 ± 0.001 mm3. In comparison, G. fossarum and G. roeseli had significantly larger eggs in all developmental stages. 6. Mean egg size of D. villosus (0.063 mm3) was maximal in January. For D. villosus (and G. roeseli) the minimum mean egg size occurred in September. In contrast to G. fossarum and G. roeseli, a second peak in egg size was not observed for D. villosus, and egg size fell more or less successively from January to September. 7. A simple index of fecundity was calculated from the number of stage 2 eggs divided by the female's wet weight. The highest values were observed in April and May, when females from the overwintering generation grew to their maximum body size. Thus the release of a large number of neonates corresponds with the availability of plentiful food and rising water temperatures for juvenile growth in the spring. The lowest value occurred in December. In June the small females of a summer generation appeared, with a naturally low fecundity. 8. The relationship between brood development time and water temperature was studied in the laboratory at a series of constant temperatures. At 16 °C, mean brood development time was 14 days for D. villosus, compared with about 3 weeks for the indigenous species. At 10 °C, mean brood development time was 24 days in D. villosus, compared with 40 days in G. fossarum and 44 days in G. roeseli. At 4 °C it was 1.8 and 3.5 times longer in G. fossarum and G. roeseli. 9. The number of offspring produced by a single clutch from a large female D. villosus is considerably higher than the total numbers produced by the indigenous freshwater gammarids, such as G. fossarum, G. roeseli and G. pulex, during their life‐spans of 1.5–2 years in seven to nine successive broods. Only one or two large ovigerous D. villosus would probably be enough to start a new population. A potentially high reproductive capacity, comparatively small eggs, optimal timing to release the maximum number of neonates per female in April/May, and a long reproductive cycle, together with rapid development of eggs, rapid growth to sexual maturation, short life span, tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions, and exceptional predatory capabilities, all give the invasive Ponto‐Caspian gammarid an opportunity to become globally distributed in freshwater ecosystems of the temperate climate zone.  相似文献

To examine the relationship between cooling rate and cold hardiness in eggs of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, the survival rates and cryoprotectant levels of three embryonic developmental stages were measured at different cooling rates (from 0.05 to 0.8 degrees C min(-1)) in acclimated and non-acclimated eggs. Egg survival rate increased with decreasing cooling rate. The concentration of cryoprotectants (myo-inositol, trehalose, mannitol, glycerol, and sorbitol) increased in non-acclimated eggs, but varied significantly in response to different cooling rates in acclimated eggs. The acclimation process (5 degrees C for 3 days) did not increase eggs resistance to quick cooling ("plunge" cooling and 0.8 degrees C min(-1)). Earlier stage embryos were much more sensitive than later stage embryos to the same cooling rates. Time spent at subzero temperatures also had a strong influence on egg survival.  相似文献

Survivorship of Little Tern Sterna albifrons eggs and chicks was followed on an islet in the Nakdong Estuary, Republic of Korea, in 1995 and 1996. Mean egg size and incubation period were significantly different between the 2 years. The maximum clutch size was three eggs, and the second egg in the clutch often hatched earlier than the first, while most of the third eggs hatched last. In 1996, when the fate of 249 eggs from 106 nests was followed for 40 days, hatching success, fledging success and breeding success were 77%, 40% and 31%, respectively. High mortality occurred in the early chick stage, mostly because of rain and predation by Weasels Mustela sibirica. The breeding success per egg was 14% in one-egg clutches, 28% in two-egg clutches and 34% in three-egg clutches. This difference was mainly attributed to the lower hatching success in the smaller clutches. In three-egg clutches, the third egg showed significantly lower breeding success than siblings. The main foods of the Little Tern were Tridentiger obscurus, Engraulis japonicus, Hyporhamphus intermedius, Acanthogobius flavimanus (all fish), Palaemon sp. and Crangon affinis (shrimps). The feeding frequency was, apparently, not affected by time of day and age of chicks but was probably influenced by weather conditions. Newly hatched chicks failed to eat 25% of the prey brought to them, although this decreased with the age of the chicks.  相似文献

Laying eggs out of water was crucial to the transition to land and has evolved repeatedly in multiple animal phyla. However, testing hypotheses about this transition has been difficult because extant species only breed in one environment. The pantless treefrog, Dendropsophus ebraccatus, makes such tests possible because they lay both aquatic and arboreal eggs. Here, we test the oviposition site choices of D. ebraccatus under conflicting risks of arboreal egg desiccation and aquatic egg predation, thereby estimating the relative importance of each selective agent on reproduction. We also measured discrimination between habitats with and without predators and development of naturally laid aquatic and arboreal eggs. Aquatic embryos in nature developed faster than arboreal embryos, implying no cost to aquatic egg laying. In choice tests, D. ebraccatus avoided habitats with fish, showing that they can detect aquatic egg predators. Most importantly, D. ebraccatus laid most eggs in the water when faced with only desiccation risk, but switched to laying eggs arboreally when desiccation risk and aquatic predators were both present. This provides the first experimental evidence to our knowledge that aquatic predation risk influences non-aquatic oviposition and strongly supports the hypothesis that it was a driver of the evolution of terrestrial reproduction.  相似文献

Summary Terrestrial oviposition with free-living aquatic larvae is a common reproductive mode used by amphibians within the central Amazonian rainforest. We investigated the factors presently associated with diversity of microhabitats (waterbodies) that may be maintaining the diversity of reproductive modes. In particular, desiccation, predation by fish, competition with other anurans and water quality were examined in 11 waterbodies as possible forces leading to the evolution of terrestrial oviposition. Predation experiments demonstrated that fish generally do not eat anuran eggs, and that predacious tadpoles and dytiscid beetle larvae are voracious predators of anuran eggs. The percentage of species with terrestrial oviposition was only weakly correlated with the occurrence of pond drying, pH and oxygen concentration, suggesting that anurans in this tropical community are able to use the range of water quality available for egg development. There was a tendency for terrestrial oviposition to be associated with the number of species of tadpoles using the waterbody, but we consider this to be spurious as there was no obvious competitive mechanism that could result in this relationship. The percentage of species with terrestrial oviposition was significantly positively related to our index of egg predation pressure, and negatively related to our index of fish biomass. Egg predation pressure was also negatively related to the index of fish biomass. These results allow us to discount as improbable the hypothesis that predation by fish on anuran eggs was an important selective pressure leading to terrestrial oviposition in this community. The strong positive relationship between terrestrial oviposition and our index of egg predation pressure indicates that these predators have exerted, and are exerting, a significant selective pressure for terrestrial oviposition. The strong negative relationship between the occurrence of fish and the egg predators suggests the surprising conclusion that the presence of fish actually protects aquatic anuran eggs from predation in this tropical system, and allows aquatic oviposition to dominate only in those waterbodies with moderate to high densities of fish. Our results suggest that terrestrial oviposition is a fixed predator avoidance trait.  相似文献

Summary Bufo periglenes, a toad endemic to montane Costa Rica, produces an unusually small clutch of large, yolk-rich eggs. The toads breed in small ephemeral pools that are unpredictable in duration and may be low in food availability. Two congeners, Bufo coniferus and Bufo marinus, occur nearby, breed in more permanent bodies of water that offer more food, and exhibit the typical toad pattern of large clutches of small eggs. Tadpoles of all three species feed on detritus and suspended organic material. By raising tadpoles of the three species individually with and without food I investigated the relationship between egg size (yolk provision) and tadpole survival. All of the unfed B. coniferus and B. marinus tadpoles grew little and died soon after developing to the hindlimb bud stage. On the other hand, all of the unfed B. periglenes tadpoles metamorphosed successfully, demonstrating that the tadpoles are facultatively non-feeding; developmental time from hatching to metamorphosis was significantly shorter for unfed tadpoles than for fed tadpoles, but fed individuals were significantly larger at transformation. Faster developmental rate and larger body size at transformation are both advantageous for frogs and toads, but cannot be attained simultaneously. Large egg size may afford flexibility in unpredictable environments. In pools where food is available, tadpoles presumably eat, take longer to metamorphose, but are larger at transformation than tadpoles developing in nutrient-poor sites. Small body size at transformation (a consequence of not eating) has potential costs, but the large quantity of yolk provided by a large egg enhances the probability of metamorphosis in food-limited environments.  相似文献

The red-eyed treefrog, Agalychnis callidryas , lays eggs on leaves overhanging ponds. Tadpoles hatch and enter the water at different ages, and late-hatched tadpoles survive aquatic predators better than do early-hatched tadpoles. Here I assess developmental consequences of hatching age through: (1) a morphological study of embryos and tadpoles through the plastic hatching period; (2) a behavioural assay for an effect of hatching age on feeding; and (3) a field experiment testing the effect of hatching age on growth to metamorphosis. Substantial development of feeding, digestive, respiratory and locomotor structures occurs in embryos over the plastic hatching period. Hatchling morphology thus varies with age, with consequences for behaviour and predation risk. Hatched tadpoles develop faster than embryos, and early-hatched tadpoles feed before late-hatched tadpoles. After all tadpoles have hatched, the effect of hatching age on size decreases. I found no evidence for an effect of hatching age on size at metamorphosis and only weak evidence for an effect on larval period. Hatching age affects the sequence of developmental change: early-hatched tadpoles lose external gills while otherwise more developed embryos maintain them. Plasticity in external gill resorption may be adaptive given differences in the respiratory environments of embryos and tadpoles. Early-hatched tadpoles also diverge from embryos in shape, growing relatively smaller tails. The study of functional morphology and developmental plasticity will contribute to understanding hatching as an ontogenetic niche shift.  相似文献

Egg size for Fundulus heteroclitus (L.) populations is concordant with the distribution of the two F . heteroclitus subspecies, i.e. F. h. heteroclitus eggs are considerably larger than F. h. macrolepidotus eggs. The influence of egg size on survival of embryos during incubation and survival and growth of newly-hatched larvae was estimated for four populations representing both subspecies along the Atlantic coast of the United States and in Delaware Bay. Survival of embryos was determined for incubation periods of 14, 21 and 28 days. Greatest differences in survival were detected following the longest incubation period where less than 50 per cent of the smaller F. h. macrolepidotus eggs survived while little or no mortality was detected among the larger F. h. heteroclitus eggs . Influence of egg size on larval survival was also greatest among those larvae hatched after 28 days where F. h. macrolepidotus larvae survived without food, for an average of 6 days, while F. h. heteroclitus larvae survived 11–12 days. F. h. heteroclitus larvae were significantly larger at hatching than F. h. macrolepidotus larvae. Larval growth rates were the same (0.4 mm day−1) in both subspecies. As a result, size differences at hatching were still maintained after 42 days of growth. The differences in egg size along with other morphological and reproductive characteristics of F. heteroclitus populations probably represent genetically based adaptations to environmental conditions, of which the length of the spawning season is one of the major components stimulating the coevolution of these traits.  相似文献
