Recent physiological work has shown that the filamentous euendolithic cyanobacterium Mastigocoleus testarum (strain BC008) is able to bore into solid carbonates using Ca2+-ATPases to take up Ca2+ from the medium at the excavation front, promoting dissolution of CaCO3 there. It is not known, however, if this is a widespread mechanism or, rather, a unique capability of this model strain. To test this, we undertook a survey of multispecies euendolithic microbial assemblages infesting natural carbonate substrates in marine coastal waters of the Caribbean, Mediterranean, South Pacific, and Sea of Cortez. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of complex assemblages of euendoliths, encompassing 3 out of the 5 major cyanobacterial orders. 16S rRNA gene clone libraries detected even greater diversity, particularly among the thin-filamentous forms, and allowed us to categorize the endoliths in our samples into 8 distinct phylogenetic clades. Using real-time Ca2+ imaging under a confocal laser scanning microscope, we could show that all communities displayed light-dependent formation of Ca2+-supersaturated zones in and around boreholes, a staple of actively boring phototrophs. In 3 out of 4 samples, boring activity was sensitive to at least one of two inhibitors of Ca2+-ATPase transporters (thapsigargin or tert-butylhydroquinone), indicating that the Ca2+-ATPase mechanism is widespread among cyanobacterial euendoliths but perhaps not universal. Function-community structure correlations point to one particular clade of baeocyte-forming euendoliths as the potential exception.  相似文献

Nummulites beaumonti d'Archiac & Haime, 1853, originally described from El Basatin, Gebel Mokattam, Greater Cairo, is redefined from a nummulitic bank at the base of the Maadi Formation from its type locality as neotype. Schaub (1981) described the species from Libya and the type example of this species is still unknown. N. discorbinus Schlotheim (1820) is described as neotype from a nummulitic bank in the Mokattam Formation, which is located in the site of the Citadel tombs, near the Salah El Din Citadel, Gebel Mokattam, Egypt. According to Schaub (1981), the type example of this species is also unknown. For this reason the establishment of the neotypes of these two widespread nummulites species: N. discorbinus (Late Lutetian) and N. beaumonti (Bartonian) is important and tackled in this paper. N. qurnensis n. sp. ( = N. sp. cf. beaumonti in Boukhary et al. 2002) is introduced as a new species from the lower Bartonian part of the Qurn Formation of Helwan. Biometrical studies are carried out on the three species to present up to date information on these Nummulites, with particular attention to their biostratigraphic correlation with the Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZ) of Serra-Kiel et al. 1998. The authors would like to stress the importance of a careful designation of a neotype to avoid the introduction of complicated and unnecessary taxonomic problems.  相似文献

Summary Morphological and geochemical comparisons between modern cryptic microbialites from Lizard Island/Great Barrier Reef and fossil counterparts in the Upper Jurassic (Southern Germany, Dobrogea/Romania) and late Lower Cretaceous (Aptian/Albian from Cantabria/Spain) spongiolitic environments show that there are common factors controlling the crust formations mostly independent of light despite of diverging (paleo-) oceanographic positions as well as relationships of competitors. Factors such as increased alkalinity, oligotrophy, and reduced allochthonous deposition are of major importance. Thrombolitic microbialites are interpreted as biologically induced and therefore calcified in isotopic equilibrium with the surrounding sea water. Corresponding with shallowing upward cycles, microbial mats which produce stromatolitic peloidal crusts become more important. Different biomarkers are introduced for the first time extracted and analyzed from spongiolitic limestones of Lower Kimmeridgian age from Southern Germany.  相似文献

The most important archive of Earths climate change through geologic history is the sedimentary rock record. Rhythmic sedimentary alternations are usually interpreted as a consequence of periodic variations in the orbital parameters of the Earth. This interpretation enables the application of cyclostratigraphy as a very precise chronometer, when based on the assumption that orbital frequencies are faithfully recorded in the sedimentary archive. However, there are numerous uncertainties with the application of this concept. Particularly in carbonates, sediment properties such as mineralogical composition and fossil associations are severely altered during post-depositional alteration (diagenesis). We here point out that the assumption of a 1:1 recording of orbital signals in many cases is questionable for carbonate rhythmites. We use computer simulations to show the effect of diagenetic overprint on records of orbital signals in the carbonate record. Such orbital signals may be distorted in terms of frequency, amplitude, and phase by diagenetic processes, and cycles not present in the insolation record may emerge. This questions the routine use of carbonate rhythmites for chronostratigraphic dating.  相似文献

Lacustrine carbonate chimneys are striking, metre‐scale constructions. If these were bioinfluenced constructions, they could be priority targets in the search for early and extraterrestrial microbial life. However, there are questions over whether such chimneys are built on a geobiological framework or are solely abiotic geomorphological features produced by mixing of lake and spring waters. Here, we use correlative microscopy to show that microbes were living around Pleistocene Mono Lake carbonate chimneys during their growth. A plausible interpretation, in line with some recent works by others on other lacustrine carbonates, is that benthic cyanobacteria and their associated extracellular organic material (EOM) formed tubular biofilms around rising sublacustrine spring vent waters, binding calcium ions and trapping and binding detrital silicate sediment. Decay of these biofilms would locally have increased calcium and carbonate ion activity, inducing calcite precipitation on and around the biofilms. Early manganese carbonate mineralisation was directly associated with cell walls, potentially related to microbial activity though the precise mechanism remains to be elucidated. Much of the calcite crystal growth was likely abiotic, and no strong evidence for either authigenic silicate growth or a clay mineral precursor framework was observed. Nevertheless, it seems likely that the biofilms provided initial sites for calcite nucleation and encouraged the primary organised crystal growth. We suggest that the nano‐, micro‐ and macroscale fabrics of these Pleistocene Mono Lake chimneys were affected by the presence of centimetre‐thick tubular and vertically stacked calcifying microbial mats. Such carbonate chimneys represent a promising macroscale target in the exploration for ancient or extraterrestrial life.  相似文献

Until now, additions of lime have been used to restore the buffering capacity of acidified lakes, but an alternative method which is more effective in the treatment of lakes with organogenic sediments has recently been applied in a full-scale experiment. The method, called CONTRACID, is based on the cation exchange properties of lake sediment. A sodium carbonate (soda ash) solution is injected into the sediment (by a harrow), so that the sediment becomes sodium stocked. A reverse exchange occurs during subsequent acidification. Liming has a limited effect on humic lakes, since Ca-humates have a reduced reverse exchange ability and also the lime, which remains undissolved, is rendered inactive. Ionic exchange processes and nutrient transport were studied in water/sediment cores andin situ enclosures after additions of soda ash-, lye- and lime solutions with subsequent re-acidification. Sodium carbonate additions in laboratory systems resulted in a sorption to the sediment of 42–62% of the added sodium ions (5 eq m−2) and a release of 14–78 mg Pm−2 sediment. Similar results were obtained in the enclosures where phosphorus release stimulated algal growth. Sediment pH, elevated by the sodium base addition, was lowered by re-acidification. Limed systems released no phosphorus and only about 25% of the added lime remained active for future neutralization. With the injection of the sodium carbonate solution into the sediment, only about 12% of the added sodium was recovered in lake water by spring circulation. Lake water alkalinity was then 0.12 meq l−1 and pH 6.7. Total phosphorus had been raised by 0.007 mg P l−1 causing an increase in phytoplankton biomass. Observations indicate that manipulations of acidic lake sediment according to the CONTRACID method create a long-lasting neutralizing capacity and a biological stimulation (through phosphorus release), which makes the method an attractive alternative to frequent liming.  相似文献

A novel green synthesis process about methyl-β-cyclodextrin has been investigated through the reaction between β-cyclodextrin and dimethyl carbonate by anhydrous potassium carbonate as catalyst in DMF. The influence of experimental factors including the molar ratio of dimethyl carbonate to β-cyclodextrin, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the average degree of substitution of methyl-β-cyclodextrin was studied. The results show that the average degree of substitution of methyl-β-cyclodextrin can be dependent on the reaction temperature and the molar ratio of raw material primarily. The structures of methyl-β-cyclodextrin were characterized by TLC, IR, MS, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR.  相似文献

The carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) superfamily is a class of ubiquitous metallo-enzymes that catalyse the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. The α-CA family, present in all metazoan clades, is a key enzyme involved in a wide range of physiological functions including pH regulation, respiration, photosynthesis, and biocalcification. This paper reviews the evolution of the α-CA family, with an emphasis on metazoan α-CA members involved in biocalcification. Phylogenetic analyses reveal a complex evolutionary history of α-CAs, and suggest α-CA was independently co-opted into a variety of skeleton forming roles (e.g. as a provider of HCO3- ions, a structural protein, a nucleation activator, etc.) in multiple metazoan lineages. This evolutionary history is most likely the result of multiple gene duplications coupled with the insertion of repetitive or non-repetitive low-complexity domains (RLCDs/LCDs). These domains, of largely unknown function, appear to be lineage-specific, and provide further support for the hypothesis of independent recruitment of α-CAs to diverse metazoan biocalcification processes. An analysis of α-CA sequences associated with biocalcification processes indicates that the domains involved in the activity and conformation of the active site are extremely conserved among metazoans.  相似文献

Recent and ancient carbonate platforms are major marine ecosystems, built by various carbonate-secreting organisms with different sensitivity for environmental change. For this reason, carbonate platforms are excellent sensors for changes in contemporaneous marine environments. A variety of ecosystem changes in carbonate platforms have previously been recognised in the aftermath of mass extinction events. This paper addresses how two Silurian extinction events among graptolites, conodonts, and pentamerid brachiopods can be related to changes in the style of carbonate production and general evolution of low latitude carbonate platforms in a similar way as previously reported from the major five mass extinctions of the Phanerozoic. Strata formed on Gotland during the Mulde and Lau events share remarkably many similarities but are strikingly different in composition compared to other strata on the island. The event-related strata is characterised by the sudden appearance of widespread oolites, deviating reef composition, flat-pebble conglomerates, abundant micro- and macro-oncoids, stromatolites, and other microbial facies suggesting decreased bioturbation levels in contemporaneous shelf seas. Importantly, these changes can be tied to high-resolution biostratigraphic frameworks and global stable isotope excursions. The anomalous intervals may therefore be searched for elsewhere in order to test their regional or global significance.  相似文献

The role of microorganisms in microbialite formation remains unresolved: do they induce mineral precipitation (microbes first) or do they colonize and/or entrap abiotic mineral precipitates (minerals first)? Does this role vary from one species to another? And what is the impact of mineral precipitation on microbial ecology? To explore potential biogenic carbonate precipitation, we studied cyanobacteria–carbonate assemblages in modern hydromagnesite-dominated microbialites from the alkaline Lake Alchichica (Mexico), by coupling three-dimensional imaging of molecular fluorescence emitted by microorganisms, using confocal laser scanning microscopy, and Raman scattering/spectrometry from the associated minerals at a microscale level. Both hydromagnesite and aragonite precipitate within a complex biofilm composed of photosynthetic and other microorganisms. Morphology and pigment-content analysis of dominant photosynthetic microorganisms revealed up to six different cyanobacterial morphotypes belonging to Oscillatoriales, Chroococcales, Nostocales and Pleurocapsales, as well as several diatoms and other eukaryotic microalgae. Interestingly, one of these morphotypes, Pleurocapsa-like, appeared specifically associated with aragonite minerals, the oldest parts of actively growing Pleurocapsa-like colonies being always aragonite-encrusted. We hypothesize that actively growing cells of Pleurocapsales modify local environmental conditions favoring aragonite precipitation at the expense of hydromagnesite, which precipitates at seemingly random locations within the biofilm. Therefore, at least part of the mineral precipitation in Alchichica microbialites is most likely biogenic and the type of biominerals formed depends on the nature of the phylogenetic lineage involved. This observation may provide clues to identify lineage-specific biosignatures in fossil stromatolites from modern to Precambrian times.  相似文献

The biostratigraphy (larger foraminifers, dasycladaleans), microfacies, sedimentology, and geochemistry (δ 13C, strontium-isotope stratigraphy) of a continuous, 148-m-thick section of shallow-water platform carbonates that contain the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) boundary were analyzed. The boundary is constrained within a 7-m-thick interval, between the last occurrence of Maastrichtian larger benthic foraminifers and the first occurrence of Danian benthic foraminifers. Although this interval is intensively dolomitized, there is no sedimentological evidence of a major hiatus at the K/P boundary. The correlation of bulk rock δ 13C values with stable isotope data from DSDP Site 384 (NW Atlantic Ocean) supports this interpretation and indicates a Selandian age for the top of the section. The Qalhat section is a unique example of a carbonate platform that has recorded persisting open marine environmental conditions across the K/P boundary (Maastrichtian–Selandian), as indicated by the abundance of rudists, larger benthic foraminifers (Maastrichtian), calcareous algae and scleractinian corals.  相似文献

Background and aims

The possible influence of phosphorus (P) on iron (Fe) deficiency chlorosis in susceptible plants needs elucidation. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that Fe chlorosis can be aggravated at high levels of P in the substrate.

Methods

Chickpea, lupin and peanut (in a preliminary experiment), and lupin and sorghum (in a second, factorial experiment) were successively grown on artificial substrates consisting of mixtures of Fe oxide-coated sand (FOCS), calcium carbonate (calcite) sand (CCS) and quartz sand to which phosphate was added at different doses.

Results

The proportion of FOCS in the substrate had a significant positive effect on leaf chlorophyll concentration (as estimated via SPAD) in all crops. In the factorial experiment, the SPAD value was negatively affected by the proportion of CCS in the dicot (lupin) but not in the monocot (sorghum). In the preliminary experiment, increasing the P dose generally had little effect on the SPAD of plants grown on the FOCS-rich substrate but a negative effect on those grown on the FOCS-poor substrate. In the factorial experiment, the P dose negatively affected SPAD in both lupin and sorghum.

Conclusions

Iron acquisition by the plant is negatively influenced by P probably because the solubility of the Fe oxides decreases with increasing coverage of their surfaces by sorbed phosphate.  相似文献

The reactions of the carbonate and dichloride radical anions, CO3- and Cl2-, with the extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HA) have been studied using the kinetic technique of pulse radiolysis and also by steady-state irradiation combined with gel permeation chromatography/multiangle laser light scattering(gpc/MALLS) to measure the rates of reaction with HA and the yield of HA chain scission, respectively. For comparison, the same measurements were made for the reactions of the free radicals *OH, Br2*-, and N3*. The carbonate and dichloride radical anions were found to react relatively quickly with HA (7.0 x 10(5) and 6.9 x 10(6) dm3 mol(-1) s(-1), respectively) although they are much less reactive than the hydroxyl radical, *OH. Significant yields (20 and 38%, respectively) of chain scission of HA by these radical anions were also determined from the gpc/MALLS experiments, providing some support for their potential participation in the depolymerization of HA in vivo. These results are compared with data obtained for the other free radicals (hydroxyl, azide radicals, and dibromide radical anions) investigated in this study in order to gain an insight into their mechanism of reaction with HA. Earlier chain scission yields of HA by hydroxyl radicals determined by the authors have also been revised using the gpc/MALLS technique employed in the current study. The yields of 52% (absence of air) and 44% (in air) are much lower than the previous values. In the current study, the effect of oxygen on the yields of HA chain breaks is discussed in terms of the reactivity of HA peroxyl radicals in the presence of superoxide radical anions. The relevance of the results of this study to mechanisms of inflammation is discussed.  相似文献

The efflux of 22Na from erythrocytes was measured in vitro under experimental conditions such that rate constants due to efflux either by active transport, passive diffusion, or exchange diffusion could be calculated. No significant differences were found in the rate constants for 22Na efflux between seven male bipolar depressed patients and eight male control subjects, who had no personal or family history of psychiatric illness. Treatment of patients with lithium carbonate either for less than one week or for 4–5 weeks produced no changes in the rate constants describing the efflux of 22Na from red cells. Also, addition of 1mM LiCl in vitro did not alter the active transport of 22Na from erythrocytes. These data provide no evidence for either an abnormality in 22Na transfer across the red cell membrane of bipolar depressives or an effect of the lithium ion upon such transfer.  相似文献

Many sedimentary processes can lead to the formation of mixed carbonate–siliciclastic sediments in shallow shelf environments. The Miocene Saint-Florent Basin (Corsica), and in particular the Monte S. Angelo Formation, offers the possibility to analyze coarse mixed sediments produced by erosion of a rocky coast, ephemeral stream input, and shallow-water carbonate production dominated by red algae. The Monte S. Angelo Formation was deposited during the Burdigalian to Langhian interval. During this interval, the island of Corsica experienced increased subsidence related to the development of the Ligurian-Provençal Basin and associated Sardinia-Corsica block rotation. Four main rhodolith-rich subfacies have been recognized: conglomerate with rhodoliths, massive rhodolith rudstone, well-bedded rhodolith rudstone, and rhodolith floatstone. The four facies have been interpreted as having been deposited in different environments of a gravel-dominated, nearshore to offshore prograding wedge. Deep-water melobesioids dominate the red algal assemblage from shoreface to offshore. Shallow-water subfamilies of lithophylloids and mastophoroids occur in only accessory amounts. Poor illumination is believed to be due to terrigenous input by ephemeral streams and wave- and current-resuspension. Resuspension processes are favored by the limited occurrence of seagrasses. Two types of siliciclastic–carbonate mixing processes characterize the investigated rhodolith-rich deposits: (1) punctuated mixing, produced by the re-deposition of terrigenous sediments by debris-flow processes during flooding events onto carbonate sediments together with rhodoliths of the shoreface environments, and (2) in situ mixing, produced by growth of coralline algae on siliciclastic pebbles to form the rhodoliths.  相似文献

Water chemistry of the Chascomús Pond (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied during a year characterized by low precipitation. Supersaturation of calcium carbonate up to a calcite saturation index of about 20 in spring and summer was observed, together with a diminution of the concentration of dissolved organic matter, in particular humic substances (HS). These results suggested an adsorption between organic matter and calcium carbonate which should influence the growth of calcium carbonate crystals. A preferential removal of higher molecular weight HS was observed by gel permeation chromatography experiments.Contribution N° 524, Instituto de Limnología Dr Raúl A. Ringuelet.  相似文献

The relationship between dry weight and body length for larvae of Plecoptera (Leuctra spp., Isoperla grammatica, Nemoura cinerea) and Ephemeroptera (Baetis spp., Habrophlebia fusca, Paraleptophlebia submarginata, Ecdyonurus helveticus, Rhithrogena semicolorata), collected from a carbonate stream in the Apennine (central Italy), is reported. The power equation f(x) = Ax B has been applied to fit the curves of dry weight vs. body size (length) in the ranges 0.03–13.00 mg and 2–14 mm, respectively; a total of 674 larvae were examined. The power model was in very good agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the error between measured and estimated weight was in the 4–20% range. The data on Isoperla grammatica, Leuctra spp., Rhithrogena semicolorata and Baetis spp. were compared to those in a previous study in a different geographical setting (south-western Germany’s Black Forest) obtaining similar results but with lower errors. We used and compared two methods: the weighted least-square method (WLS) and an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The values of the A and B coefficients obtained with the two methods were very similar (<6% discrepancy for either A or B). We found the best fits for all the examined Plecoptera (species, genus, and order level), while the results for Ephemeroptera were varied, with loose fits at the order level and also for Leptophlebiidae collectively considered. Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) was successfully used to promote synthesis of aliphatic poly(carbonate-co-ester) copolymers from dialkyl carbonate, diol, and lactone monomers. The polymerization reactions were carried out in two stages: first-stage oligomerization under low vacuum, followed by second-stage polymerization under high vacuum. Therefore, copolymerization of ω-pentadecalactone (PDL), diethyl carbonate (DEC), and 1,4-butanediol (BD) yielded PDL-DEC-BD copolymers with a M(w) of whole product (nonfractionated) up to 33?000 and M(w)/M(n) between 1.2 and 2.3. Desirable reaction temperature for the copolymerization was found to be ~80 °C. The copolymer compositions, in the range from 10 to 80 mol % PDL unit content versus total (PDL + carbonate) units, were effectively controlled by adjusting the monomer feed ratio. Reprecipitation in chloroform/methanol mixture allowed isolation of the purified copolymers in up to 92% yield. (1)H and (13)C NMR analyses, including statistical analysis on repeat unit sequence distribution, were used to determine the polymer microstructures. The synthesized PDL-DEC-BD copolymers possessed near random structures with all possible combinations of PDL, carbonate, and butylene units via either ester or carbonate linkages in the polymer chains and are more appropriately named as poly(PDL-co-butylene-co-carbonate).  相似文献

Microscopic observations of calcrete soil samples in semiarid environments from Israel reveal a particular vesicular microfabric. The calcrete horizon is indurated but highly porous and all the pores are coated with a gray layer (quasi‐coating) of secondary calcium carbonate. Two kinds of needles are found inside the pores: thin and regular needles (calcite), and filaments with very sharp spikes that are of fungal origin. Analysis of the proportions of C, O, and Ca were made with an E.D.S. microprobe connected with a scanning electron microscope to distinguish calcite (CaCO3) from calcium oxalate (CaC2O4) and to differentiate inorganic from organic influences. Under biological control, calcium oxalate coexists with calcium carbonate; both contribute to rock diagenesis. In the pores, biological activity promotes a complex cycling of calcium leading to recementation of the matrix and further lithification. Thus, this kind of calcrete is due to geological evolution as much as to biochemical control.  相似文献

Summary The Carboniferous of N?tsch (Austria), divided into Erlachgraben, Badstub and N?tsch Formations, is composed of a thick sequence of dominantly siliciclastic deepsea sediments. Intercalated marly and silty limestones in the upper Erlachgraben Formation consist of bioclastic wackestones and algal wackestones/packstones which contain a diverse fossil assemblage of formainifers, algae and pseudo-algae. These microfossils are accurately described and documented, and three species of algae are established:Principia fluegeli n. sp.,Paraepimastopora noetschensis n. sp., andNanopora pseudofragilissima n. sp. Based on the occurrence of both important species of the foraminifers Lasiodiscoidea (Howchinia gibba andEolasiodiscus dilatatus), and also on the presence ofEndothyranopsis plana, of the lastEarlandia ex. gr.vulgaris and of the firstEostaffella exp gr.postmosquensis, the upper Erlachgraben Formation is dated as late Serpukhovian (goniatite biozone E 2 of the Namurian A; Arnsbergian stage, corresponding to the Zapaltyubinsky of the standard Russian sequence; foraminiferal biozones 18 or Cf 7 of Belgium, or Cf 16 of the Donbass). Compared to the Pyrenees and the Donbass region, the algal flora of the Carboniferous of N?tsch seems to be relatively endemic. Algae and foraminifers originally inhabited a shallow carbonate ramp and were transported and redeposited in a deep-water environment by gravity flows. The formainifers most probably migrated from the Donbass region along the shelf of a narrow seaway to N?tsch.  相似文献
