Social evolution theory for microorganisms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Microorganisms communicate and cooperate to perform a wide range of multicellular behaviours, such as dispersal, nutrient acquisition, biofilm formation and quorum sensing. Microbiologists are rapidly gaining a greater understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in these behaviours, and the underlying genetic regulation. Such behaviours are also interesting from the perspective of social evolution - why do microorganisms engage in these behaviours given that cooperative individuals can be exploited by selfish cheaters, who gain the benefit of cooperation without paying their share of the cost? There is great potential for interdisciplinary research in this fledgling field of sociomicrobiology, but a limiting factor is the lack of effective communication of social evolution theory to microbiologists. Here, we provide a conceptual overview of the different mechanisms through which cooperative behaviours can be stabilized, emphasizing the aspects most relevant to microorganisms, the novel problems that microorganisms pose and the new insights that can be gained from applying evolutionary theory to microorganisms.  相似文献

在漫长的进化过程中,微生物与昆虫形成了多种形式的互作关系。微生物的广泛分布为与昆虫接触并影响昆虫的行为提供了背景条件。为了深入探究微生物影响昆虫行为的现象和机制,本文综述了微生物影响昆虫行为方面的研究进展。微生物通过产生可被昆虫识别的化学信号物质、参与昆虫或寄主植物信息化合物的合成等方式可影响昆虫对其寄主的定位和选择。在对昆虫种内和种间关系的研究中也发现微生物起着非常重要的作用。通过改变昆虫性信息素等方式,微生物还能影响到昆虫的繁殖行为;除此之外,微生物合成或参与合成的信息化合物还可以影响昆虫的社会性和聚集等行为。根据当前对微生物影响昆虫行为方面的研究现状,我们建议可进一步研究:(1)微生物影响昆虫行为的过程中,影响昆虫行为的信息化合物是如何产生的?(2)微生物在影响昆虫行为的过程中是否涉及更多的物种间互作?(3)对于一些在特定时期可影响昆虫行为的共生微生物来说,宿主昆虫是如何获得并维持这些微生物的?  相似文献

The emergence of drug-resistant microorganisms is an important medical and social problem. Drug-resistant microorganisms are thought to grow selectively in the presence of antibiotics. Most clinically isolated drug-resistant microorganisms have mutations in the target genes for the drugs. While any of the many mutagens in the environment may cause such genetic mutations, no reports have yet described whether these mutagens can confer drug resistance to clinically important microorganisms. We investigated how environmental mutagens might be implicated in acquired resistance to antibiotics in clinically important microorganisms, which causes human diseases. We selected mutagens found in the environment, in cigarette smoke, or in drugs, and then exposed Pseudomonas aeruginosa to them. After exposure, the incidence of rifampicin- and ciprofloxacin-resistant P. aeruginosa strains markedly increased, and we found mutations in genes for the antibiotic-target molecule. These mutations were similar to those found in drug-resistant microorganisms isolated from clinical samples. Our findings show that environmental mutagens, and an anticancer drug, are capable of inducing drug-resistant P. aeruginosa similar to strains found in clinical settings.  相似文献

群体感应是微生物在繁殖过程中分泌一些特定的信号分子,当信号分子浓度达到一定阈值后,可以调控某些基因表达,从而实现信息交流的现象.群体感应调控着生物膜形成、公共物质合成、基因水平转移等一系列社会性行为,广泛存在于各类微生物信息交流中.活性污泥、生物膜和颗粒污泥等生物聚集体广泛存在群体感应现象,了解和认识群体感应与微生物之间的调控行为,对于废水处理具有重要意义.本文综述了感应信号分子的分类、群体感应调控机制,群体感应在活性污泥、生物膜、好氧颗粒污泥和厌氧颗粒污泥等废水处理中的调控行为的研究进展,并对废水处理中群体感应的研究进行了展望,以期为深入理解废水处理中群体感应调控行为提供参考.  相似文献

冰川中以耐冷的生物为主,形成一个以微生物为主要生命形式的相对简单的生态系统.冰川中的微生物包括病毒、细菌、放线菌、丝状真菌、酵母菌和藻类.其中一些病毒对人类健康具有潜在的危害性.着重论述了不同区域和不同海拔高度的冰川微生物类群和数量分布特征以及冰芯(深冰川)细菌菌群分布与气候环境的关系.综述结果表明:一些微生物类群广泛存在于各地的冰川上,具有全球分布特性;另一些类群只出现在个别冰川上,为一些地方性冰川微生物.随着海拔高度的增加,冰川上呈现出冰、雪冰和雪环境明显不同的生态条件;微生物类群分布也具有明显的差异性,与冰川上的生态条件和盛行的风向有关.优势类群对冰、雪冰和雪环境具有一定的指示意义.冰川微生物数量分布不仅受到冰川上的水热、光照和营养状况的影响,还与降雪的沉积作用有关.冰芯中的细菌数量与矿物微粒含量具有密切的对应关系.最后指出了冰川微生物研究在基因多样性、气候环境变化、生物地球化学循环、微生物对环境变化的响应机制和星际生命探索中的重要性及其生态学和社会经济意义.  相似文献

(Micro)organisms, such as bacteria, which cause sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in humans are presented with an interesting ecological challenge. These microorganisms need humans to have sexual contact with each other in order for the microorganisms to spread to other hosts as well as to have subsequent generations of descendants. However, diseases tend to lower the sex drive and to render the host less sexually attractive. It is argued that, over time, selective advantages sculpted organisms which cause STDs to be minimally symptomatic and to indirectly increase the number of sexual partners of the host. Neisseria gonorrhoeae which cause the STD gonorrhea are used as a prototype for these putative sexual dynamics. As a counter to the (micro)organisms' biological adaptations, human cultural innovations emerged and became integrated into the various traditions of social structures.  相似文献

The potential benefits of cooperation in microorganisms can be undermined by genetic conflict within social groups, which can take the form of 'cheating'. For cooperation to succeed as an evolutionary strategy, the negative effects of such conflict must somehow be either prevented or mitigated. To generate an interpretive framework for future research in microbial behavioural ecology, here we outline a wide range of hypothetical mechanisms by which cheaters might be constrained.  相似文献

With words such as AIDS, allergy and autoimmunity embedded in the popular lexicon, we often equate health with the precision and the tenor of responses to allergens and microorganisms. This leads many people to seek their own solutions to sustain, restore or even boost their immune competence, hoping to live more comfortably and longer. Here, we consider the social and clinical contexts in which these promises of enhanced immunity are pursued through popular practices known as complementary and alternative medicine and the evidence that supports these.  相似文献

In numerous species of social animals and social microorganisms,fitness is positively dependent on population density, at leastin some environments and over some density ranges. This "Alleeeffect" is observed in the cooperative bacterium Myxococcusxanthus during multicellular fruiting body development, duringwhich the standard laboratory genotype sporulates less efficientlyat lower population densities and produces no spores below aminimum threshold density. Here we demonstrate significant quantitativevariation in Allee patterns among distinct natural isolatesof M. xanthus. Isolates with similar developmental performanceat intermediate population densities exhibit stark variationin performance at both very low and very high densities. Suchvariation has implications for evolutionary performance underfluctuating natural environments. It also suggests that distinctintraspecific populations of social animals and other socialmicrobes with different selective histories may vary in theeffects of density on social fitness.  相似文献

This review concentrates on the history of the subfield of microbiology referred to as the population organization-and communication-related research direction (POCRRD). The focal points of POCRRD include intercellular interactions, information exchange between cells, and multicellular structures (colonies, biofilms, flocs, etc.). Special attention in this review is given to the contribution of Russian scientists to the development of POCRRD. In terms of POCRRD, microorganisms are viewed as social creatures that constantly communicate and form supraorganismic, intrinsically heterogeneous systems.  相似文献

Current concepts concerning the social behavior of microorganisms inhabiting the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract and their role in the formation of integrated supracellular structures and in intercellular communication in the host–microbiota system are reviewed. The analysis of the literature data and of the results obtained by the authors indicates an important role of neuromediators (biogenic amines, amino acids, peptides, and nitric oxide) in intra- and interspecies microbial communication, as well as in the microbiota–host dialogue. The role of this dialogue for human health, its effect on the human psyche and social behavior, and the possibility of construction of probiotic preparations with a target-oriented neurochemical effect are discussed.  相似文献

Little is known about the population structure of social microorganisms, yet such studies are particularly interesting for the ways that genetic variation impacts their social evolution. Dictyostelium , a eukaryotic microbe widely used as a developmental model, has a social fruiting stage in which some formerly independent individuals die to help others. To assess genetic variation within the social amoeba Dictyostelium purpureum , we sequenced ∼4000 base pairs of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) from 37 isolates collected in Texas, Virginia, and Japan. Our analysis showed extensive genetic variation between populations and clear evidence of phylogenetic structure. We identified three major phylogenetic groups that were more different than other accepted species pairs. Tests using pairs of clones showed that both sexual macrocyst and asexual fruiting body formation were influenced by genetic divergence. Macrocysts were less likely to form between pairs of clones from different groups than from the same group. There was also a correlation between the genetic divergence of a pair of clones and their degree of mixing within fruiting bodies. These observations suggest that cryptic species might occur within D. purpureum and, more importantly, reveal how genetic variation impacts social interactions.  相似文献

Background

While the social, ethical, and legal implications of biobanking and large scale data sharing are already complicated enough, they may be further compounded by research on the human microbiome.

Discussion

The human microbiome is the entire complement of microorganisms that exists in and on every human body. Currently most biobanks focus primarily on human tissues and/or associated data (e.g. health records). Accordingly, most discussions in the social sciences and humanities on these issues are focused (appropriately so) on the implications of biobanks and sharing data derived from human tissues. However, rapid advances in human microbiome research involve collecting large amounts of data on microorganisms that exist in symbiotic relationships with the human body. Currently it is not clear whether these microorganisms should be considered part of or separate from the human body. Arguments can be made for both, but ultimately it seems that the dichotomy of human versus non-human and self versus non-self inevitably breaks down in this context. This situation has the potential to add further complications to debates on biobanking.

Summary

In this paper, we revisit some of the core problem areas of privacy, consent, ownership, return of results, governance, and benefit sharing, and consider how they might be impacted upon by human microbiome research. Some of the issues discussed also have relevance to other forms of microbial research. Discussion of these themes is guided by conceptual analysis of microbiome research and interviews with leading Canadian scientists in the field.

The ability to recognize self and to recognize partnering cells allows microorganisms to build social networks that perform functions beyond the capabilities of the individual. In bacteria, recognition typically involves genetic determinants that provide cell surface receptors or diffusible signalling chemicals to identify proximal cells at the molecular level that can participate in cooperative processes. Social networks also rely on discriminating mechanisms to exclude competing cells from joining and exploiting their groups. In addition to their appropriate genotypes, cell‐cell recognition also requires compatible phenotypes, which vary according to environmental cues or exposures as well as stochastic processes that lead to heterogeneity and potential disharmony in the population. Understanding how bacteria identify their social partners and how they synchronize their behaviours to conduct multicellular functions is an expanding field of research. Here, we review recent progress in the field and contrast the various strategies used in recognition and behavioural networking.  相似文献

Sociality is associated with an increased risk of disease transmission and one of the first defense of the insect colonies is represented by antimicrobial secretions. In many eusocial hymenopteran species venom glands represent one of the most important source of antimicrobial substances. It is known that in highly eusocial species the venom is spread on both the cuticle of insects and the comb, thus becoming a component of the so called "social immunity". So far, it is never been ascertained whether this phenomenon is also present in more primitively eusocial and incipiently eusocial groups. Using incipiently eusocial hover wasps as model, we demonstrate that venom is present on insect cuticles and that it strongly acts against microorganisms. By contrast, the nest, regardless of materials, does not represent a 'medium" where the venom is deposited by wasps in order to act as a social antiseptic weapon. Our findings discussed in an evolutionary perspective indicate that a certain degree of sociality or a sufficient number of individuals in an insect society are thresholds to be reached for the rise of complex and efficient forms of collective and social immunity as mechanisms of resistance to diseases.  相似文献

昆虫体外共生菌是指能在体外与宿主发生互利共生关系的微生物。体外共生菌虽然不如肠道微生物那样普遍存在于昆虫中,但也在宿主生长发育过程中扮演着重要的角色。昆虫体外共生菌一般寄生于昆虫体表或体内特异器官(如储菌器),在特定时期转移到植物组织中。体外共生菌产生的挥发物能作为宿主定位寄主植物的信号物质,能为宿主提供生长发育所需的营养物质,还参与了宿主体外免疫。对昆虫体外共生菌的研究,不仅能进一步揭示昆虫与微生物之间的互作关系,丰富昆虫共生菌的研究,还能从共生菌的角度探索害虫引诱剂和昆虫免疫豁免机制。本文对昆虫体外共生菌寄生方式、传播途径、对宿主的影响等研究成果进行了综述,旨在为害虫综合防控提供新思路。  相似文献
