About 130 years of anthropogenic acidification of Round Loch of Glenhead, SW Scotland, has resulted in successively decreased stability, diversity, productivity and survival rate of the non-biting midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) fauna. Similar trends have also been observed among mayflies, caddis-flies and water mites. The first effects of anthropogenic acidification on the insect and mite fauna, as evidenced by palaeolimnological analyses of210Pb-dated sediment cores, occurred as early as around 1850, i.e. earlier than in any other lake hitherto studied. The drop in the lake's pH was first indicated by decreased stability and changes in species composition of chironomids and mayflies in the littoral zone. Major changes in the profundal chironomid fauna did not take place until about 1950, when mean lake pH dropped below 5.0. At the same time, the littoral insect fauna became even more unstable and the first significant elimination of species occurred. Comparison with insect fauna of other lakes suggests that a pH of less than 5 might be critical for the ecological conditions in many acidified lakes. None of the twelve most common chironomid species present prior to the acidification of the lake had disappeared after 120–130 years of considerable acidification, and they are all common in oligotrophic lakes with a pH of 6.5–7.0. This is in contrast to the effects of heavy acidification on other aquatic animal groups. Chironomids are probably more sensitive to lake trophic status than lake acidity.  相似文献

Paleolimnological techniques were employed to document the limnological histories of the aurora trout lakes, located in the Sudbury region of Ontario. Two of these lakes are of special interest to fisheries managers, as they represent the only known native habitats of a rare strain of brook trout: the aurora trout. These lakes were limed as part of restoration efforts. Stratigraphic changes in diatom and chrysophyte assemblages from dated lake sediment cores indicate that all the lakes have been impacted by anthropogenic acidification, although the timing and the magnitude of acidification were different amongst the lakes. For example, Whirligig Lake was likely the most naturally acidic lake in the past, but it had further acidified since about 1960. This lake was limed in 1989 and then again in 1993. In Whitepine Lake, acidification started 1940; however, in the most recent sediments (1992), some recovery in lakewater acidity has occurred. In Little Whitepine Lake (a reference lake), acidification started earlier (1920) and the lakewater pH continued to decline until about 1990. This lake was limed in 1989. The chrysophyte paleoindicators suggest a recent recovery in this lake. The successful re-introduction of aurora trout in Whirligig and Whitepine lakes is undoubtedly related to the improved water quality through liming but, based on our paleolimnological indicators, the lakes' limnological characteristics (e.g. pH and metal concentrations) are still different from those present before atmospheric deposition of strong acids from the Sudbury smelters.  相似文献

A quantitative historical record of anthropogenic lead deposition has been determined for the Haliburton region of southern Ontario from a) the relative change in lead concentration in undisturbed sediment cores, and b) the total anthropogenic lead deposition measured in the region. The first parameter was measured on two sediment cores from a meromictic lake. Total lead deposition was assumed to be the average of that measured for eight other lakes in the study area. The validity of this historical record was tested on sediment cores from nearby dimictic lakes. Predicted lead concentration profiles closely resembled observed profiles.  相似文献

The European whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, widely distributed in freshwater of northern Europe and introduced into the major lakes of northern Italy, has been restocked in central Italian lakes. In accordance with current managing practices, a reduced number of spawners contribute to reproduction within each lake and a certain degree of isolation is to be expected between populations from different lakes, resulting in the rapid fixing of chromosomal changes. A detailed survey of three populations from different lakes was carried out using classical and molecular cytogenetic techniques, to verify if specific chromosomal markers are present in the distinct populations. The comparative analysis revealed intraspecific variability of NORs and fixed differences in their number in the three populations. A co-localization of major and minor rRNA genes on one chromosome site was also observed. The original data regarding the chromosome mapping of the (TTAGGG)(n) telomeric repeat obtained in this study, demonstrated their exclusively terminal distribution, and a conspicuous inter-chromosomal variation in the number of repeats. The results are compared with data available for populations from native geographic ranges.  相似文献

1. As future climate change is expected to have a major impact on freshwater lake ecosystems, it is important to assess the extent to which changes taking place in freshwater lakes can be attributed to the degree of climate change that has already taken place. 2. To address this issue, it is necessary to examine evidence spanning many decades by combining long‐term observational data sets and palaeolimnological records. 3. Here, we introduce a series of case studies of seven European lakes for which both long‐term data sets and sediment records are available. Most of the sites have been affected by eutrophication and are now in recovery. 4. The studies attempt to disentangle the effects of climate change from those of nutrient pollution and conclude that nutrient pollution is still the dominant factor controlling the trophic state of lakes. 5. At most sites, however, there is also evidence of climate influence related in some cases to natural variability in the climate system, and in others to the trend to higher temperatures over recent decades attributed to anthropogenic warming. 6. More generally and despite some problems, the studies indicate the value of combining limnological and palaeolimnological records in reconstructing lake history and in disentangling the changing role of different pressures on lake ecosystems.  相似文献

Recent research on relationships between diatoms and pH suggests that the genus Cyclotella exhibits a strong relationship with lake acidity, being almost totally absent below pH 5.5. This decline has been used as an indicator of lake acidification in paleolimnological studies. In this study C. stelligera V.H. and C. kützingiana Thwaites were abundant in Precambrian Shield lakes with pH as low as 4.5. Cyclotella comta (Ehr.) Kütz. was found in lakes of pH < 5.5, but maximum abundance was observed in lakes of pH > 5.5. Cyclotella michiganiana Skv. was found in lakes of pH < 6.0. These results indicate that the use of C. stelligera, C. kützingiana, and possibly C. comta, in paleolimnological investigations of lake acidification, should be approached with caution. These taxa may exhibit a decline in abundance with decreasing lakewater pH, but this is partially a morphometric effect not necessarily related to anthropogenic acidification.  相似文献

Wildfires are becoming larger and more frequent across much of the United States due to anthropogenic climate change. No studies, however, have assessed fire prevalence in lake watersheds at broad spatial and temporal scales, and thus it is unknown whether wildfires threaten lakes and reservoirs (hereafter, lakes) of the United States. We show that fire activity has increased in lake watersheds across the continental United States from 1984 to 2015, particularly since 2005. Lakes have experienced the greatest fire activity in the western United States, Southern Great Plains, and Florida. Despite over 30 years of increasing fire exposure, fire effects on fresh waters have not been well studied; previous research has generally focused on streams, and most of the limited lake‐fire research has been conducted in boreal landscapes. We therefore propose a conceptual model of how fire may influence the physical, chemical, and biological properties of lake ecosystems by synthesizing the best available science from terrestrial, aquatic, fire, and landscape ecology. This model also highlights emerging research priorities and provides a starting point to help land and lake managers anticipate potential effects of fire on ecosystem services provided by fresh waters and their watersheds.  相似文献

The anthropogenic stable lead content of the sediments of eight softwater Precambrian lakes in southern Ontario was measured at 34–92 sites per lake. Whole-lake anthropogenic lead burdens varied between only 610 and 770 mg m–2. There was no relationship between lead burden and either water replenishment time of the lake (TW) or the ratio of watershed area to lake area (Ad/A0), which varied by factors of 4 and 12 respectively. These results can be explained if a) the lead deposition in this region is uniform, and b) the only significant input of lead to the lakes is via deposition from the atmosphere directly on the lakes' surfaces. Therefore spatial differences in anthropogenic lead within a lake represent the redistribution or focusing pattern of the sediments.  相似文献

1. The variable ecological response of lakes to reduced nutrient loading (oligotrophication) at sites in Europe and North America was discussed at a workshop held in Silkeborg (Denmark) in January 2003. Studies of lake oligotrophication were presented based on both long‐term monitoring and data generated by palaeolimnological methods. 2. This introduction to the special issue provides short summaries of a series of the papers presented and their limnological context. Results show that the majority of lakes had approached a new equilibrium of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations 10–15 years (P) and 0–5 years (N) after a major reduction in loading, irrespective of hydraulic retention time. Phytoplankton biomass decreased and a shift towards meso‐oligotrophic species dominance occurred. The fish responded surprisingly fast to the loading reduction in most lakes. As a result, the percentage of piscivores increased and total fish biomass declined markedly, which may explain an increase in the body size of cladocerans and an increase in the zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratio seen in many of the lakes. 3. Monitoring has in general been initiated after the effects of eutrophication became apparent. In this context palaeolimnological techniques become very useful because they allow limnologists to extend time scales of coverage and to define restoration targets and baseline conditions. Moreover, lake sediments pre‐dating anthropogenic disturbance can be used to examine ecological response to, for instance, climate variability, allowing problems associated with multiple stressors to be addressed. 4. It is concluded that there is a great need for a synthetic, holistic approach to studying lake oligotrophication, combining multiple techniques of palaeolimnological sediment analysis with detailed but temporally limited long‐term monitoring of chemical and biological variables. This is important, not least to assess future responses to nutrient loading reductions, as global warming will interact with a range of external stressors and ultimately affect lake management strategies to deal with the resultant feedbacks.  相似文献

Being located in remote areas, alpine lakes are good indicators of regional and global pollution, and are particularly sensitive to atmospheric depositions. When situated in areas where acidic rocks dominate, they are sensitive to acidification. In the framework of an international project partially funded by the EU, a two-year study on zooplankton was carried out on two lakes, Lake Paione Inferiore (LPI) and Lake Paione Superiore (LPS), selected because of their susceptibility to acidification. In particular, LPS is permanently acidified, with pH ranging between 5.3 and 6.2, and LPI is acidified during the ice melt, when pH drops to 6.1 units. In addition, LPI is subjected to further anthropogenic interference, since fish (Onchorynchus mykiss) have been repeatedly introduced into the lake during the last thirty years. Literature information is available on the species composition and the seasonal dynamics of the zooplankton communities of the two lakes before these anthropogenic disturbances took place. Previously, the two lakes had a similar species composition and abundant zooplankton. An analysis of the present-day situation reveals significant changes compared to the past. Both acidification and the introduction of fish are responsible for the marked alterations observed. By reconstructing of the past cladocera assemblages and by analysing the literature on lakes with different impacts of the two factors (pH and fish), we can estimate the relative importance of the two different anthropogenic disturbances on species composition and abundance of the zooplankton communities of the two lakes. ABSTRACT

Coimbatore is one of the industrial cities in Tamil Nadu, India, which has been experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth. Coimbatore is also known for its unique freshwater lakes environment and serves as a rich ecosystem. However, the assessment of heavy metal levels in aquatic environments is limited. This study was aimed to investigate physicochemical parameters, heavy metals level and sources, and ecotoxicity in sediments collected from five different lakes in Coimbatore. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in sediments were determined by Inductive Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Hg level was measured using Advanced Mercury Analyzer (AMA). The determined heavy metal concentrations in sediments varied significantly according to the lake location and consistent with local human linked anthropogenic activities. The metal concentrations in urban lakes were exceeding both the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) and the probable effect levels” (PELs) mostly; e.g., in sediments from the Lake Ukkadam, the values of 5.08 and 203.32 mg kg-1 dry weight were observed for Hg and Cu, respectively. The ecotoxicity test with ostracods exposed to the sediment samples revealed that mortality ranged between 6 and 23% for countryside lakes and 28 and 88% for the lakes within urban Zone. We used Spearman rank-order correlation and Principal components analysis (PCA) to assess the sources of pollutants and if they related to anthropogenic pressure and eutrophication of lakes. The main sources of heavy metals from studied lakes differed significantly. Urban and industrial effluents were dominant sources in urban lakes. Agricultural runoff, domestic wastes, and natural weathering were responsible for the metal sources in country lakes. This study provides baseline information on the heavy metal pollution status of sediments in the freshwater lakes in Coimbatore, which will be useful for pollution control measures to prevent possible metal sources on these lakes and impose appropriate management practices and continuous monitoring by relevant authorities.  相似文献

有关云南湖泊的研究长期集中于高原九大湖泊和水体富营养化评价,缺少对中小型水体及多重环境压力胁迫的综合研究.本文以大理西湖为例,结合沉积物记录与现代监测资料,甄别了气候变化和人类活动干扰下硅藻群落结构的长期响应模式及其驱动强度.结果表明: 20世纪50年代以前,大理西湖总体处于自然演化阶段;1950年代开始,围湖造田和流域改造的增强导致了水体营养水平增加、水动力条件改变,硅藻优势种由扁圆卵型藻替代为脆杆藻属;而1997年以来营养水平的快速增加和湖泊水动力的改变,促进了浮游藻类大量生长、底栖硅藻持续减少,同时水生植物快速退化、生态系统稳定性明显降低.因此,在长期流域开发的背景下,对云南中小型高山湖泊的有效保护需要评价流域开发类型、强度及全球变暖的长期影响.  相似文献

The evidence from analysis of cores from lake sediments is used to identify the influences which, acting through time, have brought about changes in the lakes of the English Lake District. These are: i. climatic changes, recorded mainly in microfossil assemblages ii. soil dynamics on catchments — the natural soil development of an interglacial cycle and its effect on water composition, and iii. perturbations of input resulting from activities of man.The present position of each of 14 lakes in a series of increasing eutrophication is shown to be the result of two processes of modification by man. The first was a significant reduction in volume of the hypolimnion of the shallow lakes, consequent on the accelerated rate of sediment accumulation which followed deforestation and cultivation of catchments in all the lakes — this did not affect the biology of the deep lakes. The second has been the introduction of human and animal wastes into some of the lakes during the last 120 years, which imposed on affected lakes a process of more rapid change which was more intense in the shallow lakes.  相似文献

Although catchments have been implicated as an important source of metals to lakes, the catchment contribution of different metals is poorly known, and the anthropogenic contribution is not known at all. We determine the anthropogenic lake sediment burdens of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Pb for several Quebec and Ontario lakes, not subject to point source loading, to obtain estimates of atmospheric loading and inputs from terrestrial sources. To do this, we first collected multiple cores across 11 lake basins to estimate the whole-lake Pb burdens. As the whole-lake Pb burdens did not differ among lakes that spanned over two orders of magnitude in drainage ratios (drainage basin area/lake area), we conclude that catchment retention of anthropogenic Pb is complete. The anthropogenic Pb burdens were then used as a correction for focusing for the other metals. Among the metals, Cr and Ni were the most readily exported from drainage basins, followed by Cu. Zn showed no increase with drainage ratio, indicating Zn to be effectively retained by catchments. The export coefficients of the Pb corrected metals correlate well with ocean residence time, revealing a similar metal sorption/precipitation sequence in both soils and oceans. Sediment metal burdens provide a relatively easy way to obtain not only metal export coefficients from drainage basins, but also the atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic metals (e.g. Pb: S.E. Quebec, 950 mg*m–2: Laurentians, north of Montreal, 420 mg*m–2). The export coefficients are not only simpler to obtain than by mass balance measurements, but, in addition, identify the anthropogenic component.  相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems are threatened by multiple anthropogenic stressors acting over different spatial and temporal scales, resulting in toxic algal blooms, reduced water quality and hypoxia. However, while catchment characteristics act as a ‘filter’ modifying lake response to disturbance, little is known of the relative importance of different drivers and possible differentiation in the response of upland remote lakes in comparison to lowland, impacted lakes. Moreover, many studies have focussed on single lakes rather than looking at responses across a set of individual, yet connected lake basins. Here we used sedimentary algal pigments as an index of changes in primary producer assemblages over the last ~200 years in a northern temperate watershed consisting of 11 upland and lowland lakes within the Lake District, United Kingdom, to test our hypotheses about landscape drivers. Specifically, we expected that the magnitude of change in phototrophic assemblages would be greatest in lowland rather than upland lakes due to more intensive human activities in the watersheds of the former (agriculture, urbanization). Regional parameters, such as climate dynamics, would be the predominant factors regulating lake primary producers in remote upland lakes and thus, synchronize the dynamic of primary producer assemblages in these basins. We found broad support for the hypotheses pertaining to lowland sites as wastewater treatment was the main predictor of changes to primary producer assemblages in lowland lakes. In contrast, upland headwaters responded weakly to variation in atmospheric temperature, and dynamics in primary producers across upland lakes were asynchronous. Collectively, these findings show that nutrient inputs from point sources overwhelm climatic controls of algae and nuisance cyanobacteria, but highlights that large‐scale stressors do not always initiate coherent regional lake response. Furthermore, a lake's position in its landscape, its connectivity and proximity to point nutrients are important determinants of changes in production and composition of phototrophic assemblages.  相似文献

This study investigates the influence of organic matter (OM) on the historical variations of Hg in sediments from two closely-situated Canadian Arctic lakes, prior to the advent of Hg pollution inputs. Because of variable landscape evolution in the Mackenzie River Delta over the past 1–3 millennia, the lakes provide distinctly different histories of OM sources, types, and degree of aquatic productivity (i.e., depositional environments). They also differ significantly in their pre-1900 Hg concentration profiles. When labile, kerogen-like carbon (“S2”) from aquatic sources (diatoms and other unicellular algae) increased between 750 and 1900 A.D. in the more productive lake (Nesbitt), Hg concentrations also increased by ca. 50%. In contrast, S2 carbon concentrations in the nearby organic-poor lake (Big Lake) were several-times lower than in Nesbitt and decreased over the past millennium, while Hg concentrations showed no trend probably reflecting the stable input of clastic material from tundra soils. The contrast between lakes suggests that OM derived from unicellular algae is more effective at scavenging Hg than OM from terrestrial plants or aquatic macrophytes, possibly because of a higher content of labile, sulphur-rich compounds, high particle surface area and its dispersion throughout the water column. The results indicate that, in the absence of anthropogenic Hg inputs, increasing phytoplankton productivity and Hg scavenging alone can lead to significant increases in the Hg content of lake sediments. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that increasing lake productivity because of climate warming during the twentieth century has confounded the interpretation of recently increasing Hg levels in northern lake sediments as being unequivocally due to anthropogenic Hg deposition. This study also suggests that sedimentary TOC by itself is a poor and sometimes misleading indicator of possible changes in the source and quality of OM in aquatic systems, which can have a major impact on Hg concentrations in sediments.  相似文献

The use of lake macrophytes for ecological quality assessments usually seeks to indicate the degree of anthropogenic impact, but few of these schemes implicitly consider impacts of alien weeds. LakeSPI (submerged plant indicators) uses indicators of habitat degradation for macrophytes but also incorporates the degree of impact from alien weeds. Application of LakeSPI to 195 New Zealand lakes provided a dataset to examine how component metrics responded over gradients of anthropogenic pressures, and consider whether weed invasion was merely a ‘passenger’ of habitat degradation, or represented an additional pressure. As expected, metrics measuring depth, and diversity of native vegetation negatively correlated with independent measures of lake eutrophy and were also relatively well explained (69–78% variation) by multiple regression with lake and catchment attributes that included proxies for anthropogenic pressure. In contrast, metrics for invasive impact were largely de-coupled from eutrophication, and poorly explained (31%) by the multiple regression. The response of native vegetation metrics to invasive impact measures varied, with the strongest detected interaction relating to native displacement by increased weed occupation of the vegetated zone. Interactions between invasion and lake trophic status were also discerned, with the extent of weed occupation having a more substantial outcome for the presence of charophyte meadows in low productivity lakes than in more productive lakes. These results suggest weed invasion should be considered as an additional source of anthropogenic pressure, and incorporated in macrophyte bioassessment schemes for a more complete differentiation of lake ecological condition.  相似文献

Ancient lakes are often collectively viewed as evolutionary hot spots of diversification. East Africa's Lake Tanganyika has long been the subject of scientific interest owing to dramatic levels of endemism in species as diverse as cichlid fishes, paludomid gastropods, decapod and ostracod crustaceans and poriferans. It is the largest and deepest of the African rift lakes, and its endemic fauna has been presented with a stable inland environment for over 10 Myr, offering unique opportunities for within-lake diversification. Although astonishing diversification has been documented in the endemic cichlid fauna of the lake, similar patterns of rapid diversification have long been assumed for other groups. In contrast to this hypothesis of rapid speciation, we show here that there has been no acceleration in the rate of speciation in the thalassoid gastropods of the lake following lake colonization. While limited within-lake speciation has occurred, the dramatic conchological diversity of gastropods presently found within the lake has evolved from at least four major lineages that pre-date its formation by as much as 40 Myr. At the same time, a widespread group of African gastropods appears to have evolved from taxa presently found in the lake. While Lake Tanganyika has been a cradle of speciation for cichlid fishes, it has also been an important evolutionary reservoir of gastropod lineages that have been extirpated outside the basin.  相似文献

Recent anthropogenic climate change and the exponential increase over the past few decades of Saharan dust deposition, containing ecologically important inputs of phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca), are potentially affecting remote aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we examine changes in cladoceran assemblage composition and chlorophyll‐a concentrations over the past ~150 years from high‐resolution, well‐dated sediment cores retrieved from six remote high mountain lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Southern Spain, a region affected by Saharan dust deposition. In each lake, marked shifts in cladoceran assemblages and chlorophyll‐a concentrations in recent decades indicate a regional‐scale response to climate and Saharan dust deposition. Chlorophyll‐a concentrations have increased since the 1970s, consistent with a response to rising air temperatures and the intensification of atmospheric deposition of Saharan P. Similar shifts in cladoceran taxa across lakes began over a century ago, but have intensified over the past ~50 years, concurrent with trends in regional air temperature, precipitation, and increased Saharan dust deposition. An abrupt increase in the relative abundance of the benthic cladoceran Alona quadrangularis at the expense of Chydorus sphaericus, and a significant increase in Daphnia pulex gr. was a common trend in these softwater lakes. Differences in the magnitude and timing of these changes are likely due to catchment and lake‐specific differences. In contrast with other alpine lakes that are often affected by acid deposition, atmospheric Ca deposition appears to be a significant explanatory factor, among others, for the changes in the lake biota of Sierra Nevada that has not been previously considered. The effects observed in Sierra Nevada are likely occurring in other Mediterranean lake districts, especially in softwater, oligotrophic lakes. The predicted increases in global temperature and Saharan dust deposition in the future will further impact the ecological condition of these ecosystems.  相似文献
