Using pooled children data from the 1998 and 2003 Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys, this study examines religious differences in child survival in Ghana. Guided by the particularized theology and selectivity theses, a piecewise constant hazard model with gamma-shared frailty is used to explore if there are denominational differences in child mortality, and whether these could be explained through other characteristics. At the bivariate level, children whose mothers identified as Muslim and Traditional were found to have a significantly higher risk of death compared with their counterparts whose mothers identified as Christians. In the multivariate models, however, the religious differences disappeared after the mediating and confounding influence of socioeconomic factors were controlled. The findings provide support for the selectivity hypothesis, which is based on the notion that religious variations mainly reflect differential access to social and human capital rather than religious theology per se.  相似文献

Lithium was introduced into psychiatry half a century ago and remains as a preferred treatment for acute mania and the preferred prophylactic therapy for manic-depressive illness. Despite lithium's standing as one of the most important drugs for neuropsychiatric disorders, the therapeutic mechanisms of this monovalent cation remain to be defined. Recent research suggests that multiple sites, rather than a single target, contribute to lithium's mood stabilizing effects. Antigenic peptide binding to MHC class II molecules in the endocytic pathway occurs via a multifactorial process that requires the support of a specialized lysosomal chaperone called HLA-DM. DM shows both in primary amino acid sequence and quaternary structure a high homology to both MHC class I and class II molecules. Like the peptide presenting class II molecules, DM is expressed in all professional antigen presenting cells. DM catalyzes the dissociation of peptides that do not bind stably to the class II peptide-binding groove, thereby leading to the preferential presentation of stably binding antigenic peptides. The recently discovered HLA-DO molecule is mainly expressed in B cells and associates with DM, thereby markedly affecting DM function. Like DM, the genes encoding the HLA-DO heterodimer lie within the MHC class II region and exhibit strong homology to classical class II molecules. This review evaluates the unique effects of DO on DM-mediated antigen presentation by MHC class II molecules and discusses the possible physiological relevance for the B cell-specific expression of DO and its function.  相似文献

The biphasic (pelagobenthic) life cycle is found throughoutthe animal kingdom, and includes gametogenesis, embryogenesis,and metamorphosis. From a tangled web of hypotheses on the originand evolution of the metazoan pelagobenthic life cycle, currentopinion appears to favor a simple, larval-like holopelagic ancestorthat independently settled multiple times to incorporate a benthicphase into the life cycle. This hypothesis derives originallyfrom Haeckel's (1874) Gastraea theory of ontogeny recapitulatingphylogeny, in which the gastrula is viewed as the recapitulationof a gastraean ancestor that evolved via selection on a simple,planktonic hollow ball of cells to develop the capacity to feed.Here, we propose an equally plausible hypothesis that the originof the metazoan pelagobenthic life cycle was a direct consequenceof sexual reproduction in a likely holobenthic ancestor. Indoing so, we take into account new insights from poriferan developmentand from molecular phylogenies. In this scenario, the gastruladoes not represent a recapitulation, but simply an embryologicalstage that is an outcome of sexual reproduction. The embryocan itself be considered as the precursor to a biphasic lifestyle,with the embryo representing one phase and the adult anotherphase. This hypothesis is more parsimonious because it precludesthe need for multiple, independent origins of the benthic form.It is then reasonable to consider that multilayered, ciliatedembryos ultimately released into the water column are subjectto natural selection for dispersal/longevity/feeding that setsthem on the evolutionary trajectory towards the crown metazoanplanktonic larvae. These new insights from poriferan developmentthus clearly support the intercalation hypothesis of bilaterianlarval evolution, which we now believe should be extended todiscussions of the origin of biphasy in the metazoan last commonancestor.  相似文献

This article is part of a Special Issue “Estradiol and cognition”.Estrogens impact the organization and activation of the mammalian brain in both sexes, with sex-specific critical windows. Throughout the female lifespan estrogens activate brain substrates previously organized by estrogens, and estrogens can induce non-transient brain and behavior changes into adulthood. Therefore, from early life through the transition to reproductive senescence and beyond, estrogens are potent modulators of the brain and behavior. Organizational, reorganizational, and activational hormone events likely impact the trajectory of brain profiles during aging. A “brain profile,” or quantitative brain measurement for research purposes, is typically a snapshot in time, but in life a brain profile is anything but static — it is in flux, variable, and dynamic. Akin to this, the only thing continuous and consistent about hormone exposures across a female's lifespan is that they are noncontinuous and inconsistent, building and rebuilding on past exposures to create a present brain and behavioral landscape. Thus, hormone variation is especially rich in females, and is likely the destiny for maximal responsiveness in the female brain. The magnitude and direction of estrogenic effects on the brain and its functions depend on a myriad of factors; a “Goldilocks” phenomenon exists for estrogens, whereby if the timing, dose, and regimen for an individual are just right, markedly efficacious effects present. Data indicate that exogenously-administered estrogens can bestow beneficial cognitive effects in some circumstances, especially when initiated in a window of opportunity such as the menopause transition. Could it be that the age-related reduction in efficacy of estrogens reflects the closure of a late-in-life critical window occurring around the menopause transition? Information from classic and contemporary works studying organizational/activational estrogen actions, in combination with acknowledging the tendency for maximal responsiveness to cyclicity, will elucidate ways to extend sensitivity and efficacy into post-menopause.  相似文献

Positive mental health involves not the absence of mental disorder but rather the presence of certain mental goods. Institutions, practitioners, and theorists often identify positive mental health with well-being. There are strong reasons, however, to keep the concepts of well-being and positive mental health separate. Someone with high positive mental health can have low well-being, someone with high well-being can have low positive mental health, and well-being and positive mental health sometimes conflict. But, while positive mental health and well-being are not identical, there is an informative conceptual connection between them. Positive mental health usually contributes instrumentally to the living of a good human life, where a good human life includes (but is not limited to) well-being.  相似文献

Many students are taught about genome assembly using the dichotomy between the complexity of finding Eulerian and Hamiltonian cycles (easy versus hard, respectively). This dichotomy is sometimes used to motivate the use of de Bruijn graphs in practice. In this paper, we explain that while de Bruijn graphs have indeed been very useful, the reason has nothing to do with the complexity of the Hamiltonian and Eulerian cycle problems. We give 2 arguments. The first is that a genome reconstruction is never unique and hence an algorithm for finding Eulerian or Hamiltonian cycles is not part of any assembly algorithm used in practice. The second is that even if an arbitrary genome reconstruction was desired, one could do so in linear time in both the Eulerian and Hamiltonian paradigms.  相似文献
