Diurnal changes in K content in leaf blades, petioles, stems and roots of eleven lucerne genotypes were followed. Significant positive correlations between changes in K content in petioles and upper half of stems and significant negative correlations between changes of K content in leaf blades and lower half of stems reflected rapid K movement. The velocity — up to 60 μmol g−1 (f.m.)h−1 — of changes in K content from leaf blades to lower part of stems and the other way round showed that long distance phloem transport occurred. Only moderate increase of K content contemporarily took place in roots. When total K amount in the whole plant was calculated then K uptake alternatively with K release were noticed during the day. Average K release reached 1.48 μmol g−1 (f.m.) h−1. The rate of K movement correlated with irradiance and physiological activity of plants. The time course of K movement was uniform in plants of the same strain and it differed partially in different strains.  相似文献

We examined functional coordination among stem and root vulnerability to xylem cavitation, plant water transport characteristics and leaf traits in 14 co-occurring temperate tree species. Relationships were evaluated using both traditional cross-species correlations and phylogenetically independent contrast (PIC) correlations. For stems, the xylem tension at which 50% of hydraulic conductivity was lost (psi50) was positively associated (P < 0.001) with specific conductivity (K(S)) and with mean hydraulically weighted xylem conduit diameter (D(h-w)), but was only marginally (P = 0.06) associated with leaf specific conductivity (K(L)). The PIC correlation for each of these relationships, however, was not statistically significant. There was also no relationship between root psi50 and root K(S) in either cross-species or PIC analysis. Photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (g(s)) were strongly and positively correlated with root psi50 in the cross-species analysis (P < 0.001), a relationship that was robust to phylogenetic correction (P < 0.01). A and g(s) were also positively correlated with stem psi50 in the cross-species analysis (P = 0.02 and 0.10, respectively). However, only A was associated with stem psi50 in the PIC analysis (P = 0.04). Although the relationship between vulnerability to cavitation and xylem conductivity traits within specific organs (i.e. stems and roots) was weak, the strong correlation between g(s) and root psi50 across species suggests that there is a trade-off between vulnerability to cavitation and water transport capacity at the whole-plant level. Our results were therefore consistent with the expectation of coordination between vulnerability to xylem cavitation and the regulation of stomatal conductance, and highlight the potential physiological and evolutionary significance of root hydraulic properties in controlling interspecific variation in leaf function.  相似文献

In order to investigate broad patterns of variation of the foliar mineral nutrient concentrations of herbaceous plant communities in the ground layer of W Europe forests, correlations were examined between Ellenberg's indices (N-index: mineral nitrogen availability, R-index: pH, F-index: soil moisture and L-index: light intensity) and literature values of macronutrient concentrations for 84 forbs and 39 graminoid species. Significant, positive correlations were found between the R-index and the plants' concentration of Ca and K (forbs only) and between the N-index and the plants' concentration of K, P (forbs only) and N (forbs and graminoids). Multiple regressions showed that the N-index was the best predictor of the plants' concentration of N (forbs and graminoids), P (forbs) and Ca (graminoids) and the R-index of the plants' concentration of Ca and K (forbs). The mineral nutrient concentrations of graminoids were lower and less strongly correlated with Ellenberg's indices than those of forbs. It is argued that the mineral nutrient concentrations in the plants match the availability of mineral nutrients in the soil for N, P (N-index) and Ca (R-index), but not for K and Mg. Significant, positive correlations were found between potential relative growth rate and the concentration of some elements (N, P, K and Ca in forbs, Ca and Mg in graminoids). This suggests that the increase in the concentration of these elements in plants along fertility gradients is due, at least partly, to genetically controlled alterations of leaf anatomy associated with increasing potential relative growth rate.  相似文献

From determination of amounts and concentrations of biopolymers and solutes in the cytoplasm of Escherichia coli, we are obtaining information needed to assess the effect of macromolecular crowding on cytoplasmic properties and processes of osmotically stressed bacteria. We observe that growth rate, and the amount of cytoplasmic water decrease and cytoplasmic concentrations of biopolymers and K+, increase with increasing osmolality, even for cells grown in the presence of osmoprotectants like glycine betaine. We observe general correlations between the amount of cytoplasmic water, growth rate and cytoplasmic K+ concentration in osmotically stressed cells grown both with and without osmoprotectants. To explain these correlations, we propose that crowding increases with increasing growth osmolality, which in turn buffers the binding of proteins to nucleic acids against changes in cytoplasmic K+ concentration and (by affecting biopolymer diffusion rates and/or assembly equilibria) is a determinant of growth rate of osmotically stressed cells. Changes in biopolymer concentration and crowding may also explain the increase of the activity coefficient of cytoplasmic water with increasing osmolality of growth in E. coli.  相似文献

In the present study we aimed to investigate the relevance of either N, P or K supply for herb and leaf yield and for centelloside concentrations in Centella asiatica L. Urban leaves. In this regard, we elucidated the causal relationship between assimilation rate, leaf N, P and K concentrations, herb and leaf production, and centelloside accumulation. The experiments were conducted consecutively in a greenhouse where C. asiatica was grown in hydroponic culture and fertigated with nutrient solutions at either 0, 30, 60, 100 or 150% of the N, P or K amount in a standard Hoagland solution. In general, the increase in N, P or K supply enhanced assimilation rate and herb and leaf yield. However, exceeding specific thresholds, the high availability of one single nutrient caused lower leaf N concentrations and a decline in assimilation rate and plant growth. Irrespective of N, P and K supply, the leaf centelloside concentrations were negatively associated with herb and leaf yield, which is in accordance with the assumptions of the carbon/nutrient balance and the growth differentiation balance hypotheses. Moreover, we found strong negative correlations between saponins and leaf N concentrations, while the respective sapogenins were negatively correlated with K concentrations. Using C. asiatica as model system, our experiments reveal for the first time that the accumulation of saponins and sapogenins is affected by resource allocation between primary and secondary metabolism and that besides carbon, also nutrient availability is relevant for the regulation of the centelloside synthesis. Finally, our results highlight the huge potential of optimized and carefully controlled mineral nutrition of medicinal plants for steering the bio-production of high-quality natural products.  相似文献

We have attempted to link the solution actomyosin ATPase with the mechanical properties of in vitro actin filament sliding over heavy meromyosin. To accomplish this we perturbed the system by altering the substrate with various NTPs and divalent cations, and by altering ionic strength. A wide variety of enzymatic and mechanical measurements were made under very similar solution conditions. Excellent correlations between the mechanical and enzymatic quantities were revealed. Analysis of these correlations based on a force-balance model led us to two fundamental equations, which can be described approximately as follows: the maximum sliding velocity is proportional to square root of V(max)K(m)(A), where K(m)(A) is the actin concentration at which the substrate turnover rate is half of its maximum (V(max)). The active force generated by a cross-bridge under no external load or under a small external load is proportional to square root of V(max)/K(m)(A). The equations successfully accounted for the correlations observed in the present study and observations in other laboratories.  相似文献

This work is an application of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) as analytical technique for trace element determination in human tissues. Potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), bromine (Br), rubidium (Rb) and lead (Pb) were determined directly in blood samples from 66 mothers at delivery after full-term pregnancies. The corresponding 66 cord-blood samples of the newborns were also analysed, in order to find element correlations between maternal and newborn blood at birth. The studied samples were obtained from mothers aged between 15 and 39 years old, the gestational age being between 35 and 41 weeks and the newborns' weight between 2.310 and 4.310 kg. Samples were lyophilised and analysed without any chemical treatment. Very low levels of Pb were found both in maternal and fetal cord blood samples. Cu values ranged from 3 to 13 microg g-1, both for mothers and children. A correlation between Cu and Fe concentrations in maternal and fetal cord blood was found. Zn is considered as one of the key elements in newborn health. Concentrations between 10 and 40 microg g-1 were measured. A positive correlation between Br levels in mothers and children was observed. Positive correlations for mothers were observed between Zn and Rb as well as K and Fe. The corresponding correlations in fetal cord blood samples were not observed, however positive correlations were found between Ca and K; Cu and Fe. The mean concentrations for each element were similar in maternal and in fetal cord blood, except for Cu and Zn, being higher in maternal samples. No correlations between element concentrations and pathologies of the mothers were observed.  相似文献

Aims Comparisons of the trait–abundance relationships from various habitat types are critical for community ecology, which can offer us insights about the mechanisms underlying the local community assembly, such as the relative role of neutral vs. niche processes in shaping community structure. Here, we explored the responses of trait–abundance relationships to nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilization in an alpine meadow.Methods Five fertilization treatments (an unfertilized control and additions of N, P, K and NPK respectively) were implemented using randomized block design in an alpine Tibetan meadow. Species relative abundance (SRA), plant above-ground biomass and species richness were measured in each plot. For 24 common species, we measured species functional traits: saturated height, specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) in each treatment but seed size only in the unfertilized control. Standard major axis (SMA) regression and phylogenetically independent contrasts (PICs) analysis were used to analyse species trait–abundance relationships in response to different fertilization treatments.Important findings Positive correlations between SRA and saturated height were raised following N, P and NPK fertilizations, which indicated an increase in light competition in these plots. In P fertilized plots, SRA was also positively correlated with LDMC because tall grasses with a nutrients conservation strategy often have a relative competitive advantage in capturing limited light and soil nutrients. In K fertilized plots, neither the trait–abundance relationships nor above-ground biomass or species richness significantly differed from that in the control, which suggests that K was not a limiting resource in our study site. These significant correlations between species traits and relative abundance in fertilized treatment suggest that trait-based selection plays an important role in determining species abundance within local communities in alpine meadows.  相似文献

In the conifer genus Juniperus (Cupressaceae), many species are increasing rapidly in distribution, abundance, and dominance in arid and semiarid regions. To help understand the success of junipers in drier habitats, we studied hydraulic traits associated with their water stress resistance, including vulnerability to xylem cavitation, specific conductivity (K(S)), tracheid diameter, conduit reinforcement, and wood density in stems and roots, as well as specific leaf area (SLA) of 14 species from the United States and the Caribbean. A new phylogeny based on DNA sequences tested the relationships between vulnerability to cavitation and other traits using both traditional cross-species correlations and independent contrast correlations. All species were moderately to highly resistant to water-stress-induced cavitation in both roots and shoots. We found strong phylogenetic support for two clades previously based on leaf margin serration (serrate and smooth). Species in the serrate clade were 34-39% more resistant to xylem cavitation in stems and roots than were species in the smooth clade and had ~35% lower K(S) and 39% lower SLA. Root and stem resistance to cavitation and SLA were all highly conserved traits. A high degree of conservation within clades suggests that hydraulic traits of Juniperus species strongly reflect phylogenetic history. The high resistance to cavitation observed may help explain the survival of junipers during recent extreme droughts in the southwestern United States and their expansion into arid habitats across the western and central United States.  相似文献

Secreta from the palm and forearm was sampled for 1-min periods by a new technique, using a glass cylinder. Subjects exercised for 10-min periods at successive intensities of 40%, 50% and 65% VO2max with a leg ergometer operated in the supine position. Changes in the concentrations (values) of Na+, K+ and Cl- in their secreta during exercise were investigated. Significant positive correlations were found between the values of any two electrolytes in samples from the palm or the forearm, but the correlations between values for any one of the three electrolytes from the two sites were not significant. Values for concentrations of the electrolytes were significantly higher in samples from the palm than in those from the forearm at rest, 10 min after the beginning of exercise and at the end of exercise. No significant correlation was found between values for electrolytes in samples from the palm and the exercise intensity, but values for Na+ in samples from the forearm increased stepwise with increase in exercise intensity, and similar tendencies were observed for values of K+ and Cl-. The values for the three electrolytes in samples from the forearm, but not the palm, were significantly correlated with values for blood lactate, the percentage of VO2max and the heart rate. These results suggest that the present technique is suitable for successive samplings of secreta from the forearm, and that values for the electrolytes in samples are useful indices of exercise intensity.  相似文献

Increased temporal variance in life-history traits is generally predicted to decrease individual fitness and population growth. We show that a widely used result of stochastic sensitivity analysis that bolsters this generality is flawed because it ignores the effects of correlations between vital rates. Considering the effects of these correlations (although ignoring autocorrelations), we show that the apparently simple relationship between vital rate variance and fitness can be considerably more complex than previously thought. In particular, the previously estimated negative sensitivities of fitness or population growth to variance in a vital rate can be either enhanced by positive correlations between rates or reversed by negative correlations, even to the point that variability in a rate can increase fitness or population growth. We apply this new sensitivity calculation to data from the desert tortoise and discuss its interpretation in light of the factors generating vital rate correlations.  相似文献

The gastric H,K-ATPase is shown to catalyze 18O exchange between Pi and HOH. Mg2+ is the only ion required for the reaction. K+ increases the rate of isotope exchange, which is directly proportional to specific ATPase activity. Ouabain, which potently inhibits the Na,K-ATPase, has no effect on the exchange reaction. Conversely, omeprazole, which is specific for the H,K-ATPase, completely inhibits 18O exchange. Vanadate inhibition of exchange can be explained by competitive binding with Pi. The rate of 18O exchange is faster than the hydrolytic rate and about equal to the dephosphorylation rate. Thus, the ionic requirements for exchange, inhibition of exchange, and the rate of exchange are all compatible with catalysis occurring via the same phosphoenzyme intermediate formed during hydrolysis of ATP. The distribution of 18O-labeled Pi species formed with time indicates that Pi loss is only about twice as fast as covalent bond formation. This kinetic pattern is unaffected by K+, temperature, or the specific activity of the enzyme preparation. Invariance of the kinetic pattern could mean isotope exchange is always catalyzed by the same form of the enzyme, and K+ and higher temperature accelerate the reaction by increasing the relative amount of the active conformer. Independence of the kinetic pattern from specific activity implies that the catalytic mechanism of active enzyme molecules is unaffected by inactive proteins in gastric microsomal membranes.  相似文献

Recently, the regularized coding-based classification methods (e.g. SRC and CRC) show a great potential for pattern classification. However, most existing coding methods assume that the representation residuals are uncorrelated. In real-world applications, this assumption does not hold. In this paper, we take account of the correlations of the representation residuals and develop a general regression and representation model (GRR) for classification. GRR not only has advantages of CRC, but also takes full use of the prior information (e.g. the correlations between representation residuals and representation coefficients) and the specific information (weight matrix of image pixels) to enhance the classification performance. GRR uses the generalized Tikhonov regularization and K Nearest Neighbors to learn the prior information from the training data. Meanwhile, the specific information is obtained by using an iterative algorithm to update the feature (or image pixel) weights of the test sample. With the proposed model as a platform, we design two classifiers: basic general regression and representation classifier (B-GRR) and robust general regression and representation classifier (R-GRR). The experimental results demonstrate the performance advantages of proposed methods over state-of-the-art algorithms.  相似文献

This study investigates whether it is possible to simplify the complex influence of numerous species on leaf litter decomposition in a diverse tropical forest using functional classifications to predict litter quality, decomposition rate, and nutrient dynamics during decomposition, over a 2-yr period. Thirty-three lowland tropical forest plant species from contrasting growth forms (canopy trees, pioneer trees, lianas, palms, herbs) were studied. Twelve of 18 indices of litter quality varied significantly among growth forms, with canopy trees and palms showing lower litter quality than pioneer trees and herbs. Canopy leaves decomposed more slowly than understory leaves. Decomposition rate and mass loss trended greater ( P <0.1) in herbs and pioneer trees compared with other growth forms. There were no significant differences between monocots and dicots, and no phylogenetic signal for decomposition was observed. Significant correlations between continuous litter quality variables and decomposition rate were observed with correlation coefficients up to 0.72. Litter lignin:Mg, P concentration, and lignin:K, were the litter quality variables most related to decomposition rate. All elements showed significant negative correlations between initial litter concentration and percent remaining, but many elements showed significant correlation between percent element remaining and initial concentrations of other elements, indicating a stoichiometric balance between these elements during decomposition. The results show that although classification by growth form and canopy position are helpful for considering the ecosystem implications of changing community composition, litter quality traits provide additional predictive power for estimating the effects of species change on decomposition.

Proportions of maturing fish and reproductive output [egg size, relative fecundity, spermatocrit and gonado‐somatic index ( I G)] were studied in repeat‐spawning (+4 year old) male and female Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus , subjected to periods of fasting. Groups of individually tagged Arctic charr were fasted for c . 3, 6, 7 and 9 months, from November 1998. In the period February to November 1999, size (fork length and mass), specific growth rate ( G ), condition factor ( K ) and plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH), insulin‐like growth factor I (IGF‐I), oestradiol‐17β(E2; females) and 11‐ketotestosterone (11KT; males), were monitored monthly. Maturing fish in each group started to gain mass soon after food was made available, and both sexes reached the highest K and G c . 2 months after the onset of feeding. The fasting regimes resulted in different growth patterns during spring and summer when energy stores are normally replenished in Arctic charr, and K prior to the breeding season was significantly higher in the groups fasted for 3 and 6 months compared to the groups fasted for 7 and 9 months. There were significant positive correlations between K during the period prior to the breeding season and reproductive output in terms of the I G, spermatocrit and relative fecundity. There was, however, no clear relationship between the length of starvation and the proportion of maturing fish. Likewise, no clear relationships were found between reproductive development and plasma levels of GH and IGF‐I, although both showed marked seasonal changes, being 'down‐regulated' during winter months and 'up‐regulated' throughout summer months.  相似文献

Dogwood anthracnose, a major disease of Cornus florida L., has caused heavy mortality of C. florida in eastern United States forests. Disease severity and rate of infection have been shown to vary with several environmental factors, but the link between soil cation availability and anthracnose has not been examined. We hypothesized that soil cation availability, particularly calcium (Ca), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg), would influence dogwood survival from anthracnose. In forested stands, positive correlations between soil Ca, K, and Mg saturation and C. florida stem density and basal area were found. The effect of these cations at four levels (0, 50, 100, and 200%) of a standard nursery fertilization rate on C. florida seedling survival and resistance to dogwood anthracnose was tested. Although most of the seedlings died after one season of exposure to dogwood anthracnose, seedlings that had lower inputs of Ca and K cations showed higher levels of disease severity sooner than seedlings in other treatments, suggesting that these nutrients play a role in C. florida survival from anthracnose. Magnesium treatment levels did not appear to have an effect on C. florida disease severity or mortality.  相似文献

Several studies have reported positive correlations between the degree of enzyme heterozygosity and fitness-related traits. Notable among these are the correlations between heterozygosity and growth rate in marine bivalves. Whether the correlation is the result of intrinsic functional differences between enzyme variants at the electrophoretic loci scored or arises from non-random genotypic associations between these loci and others segregating for deleterious recessive genes (the associative overdominance hypothesis) is a matter of continuing debate. A prediction of the associative overdominance hypothesis, not shared by explanations that treat the enzyme loci as causative agents of the correlation, is that the correlation is not specific to the type of genetic marker used. We have tested this prediction by scoring heterozygosity at single locus nuclear restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in a cohort of juvenile scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) in which growth rate was known to be positively correlated with an individual's degree of allozyme heterozygosity. A total of 222 individuals were scored for their genotypes at seven allozyme loci, two nonspecific protein loci of unknown function and eight nuclear RFLPs detected by anonymous cDNA probes. In contrast to the enzyme loci, no correlation was observed between growth rate and the degree of heterozygosity at the DNA markers. Furthermore, there was no relationship between the magnitude of heterozygote deficiency at a locus and its effect on the correlation. The differences observed between the effects of allozyme and RFLP heterozygosity on growth rate provide evidence against the associative overdominance hypothesis, but a strong case against this explanation must await corroboration from similar studies in different species.  相似文献
