In the present study the induction of biofilms on the open rock faces of quartz quarries is reported as a feasible method of correcting the visual impact generated by the industry. Experiments were carried out to colonize quartz samples with microorganisms isolated directly from aged quarry faces. The results demonstrated the viability of inducing colonisation on quartz, which is not the most favourable material for such treatment. Furthermore, biofilm development caused a significant change in the colour of the surface of the quartz samples to greenish- or reddish yellow, which may be quantified by a colorimeter for solids. The notable change in the colour is sufficient to attenuate the bright white aspect of the quartz faces and therefore to correct the visual impact generated.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to investigate the viability of the use of two waste products, cheese whey and composted organic waste, as nutrient sources in the induction of biological films on quartz surfaces, with the final aim of reducing the visual impact generated by quartz mining. Experiments were carried in laboratory in which quartz samples were colonized with microorganisms (mainly cyanobacteria) forming biofilms. Previous studies have shown that a nutritional supplement must be added for good development of biofilms and, therefore, application of the two waste products was compared with application of the chemical nutrient medium on which these types of microorganisms are usually cultivated. Both products provided better results than the culture medium, in terms of the speed of formation of the biofilm, faster with the waste products, and the degree of cover of the brilliant white colour of the quartz, better masked by the biofilms formed when the waste products were applied as a darker biofilm was obtained.  相似文献

Developmental studies of brain volumes can reveal which portions of neural circuits are sensitive to environmental inputs. In social insects, differences in relative investment across brain regions emerge as behavioural repertoires change during ontogeny or as a result of experience. Here, we test the effects of maturation and social experience on morphological brain development in Polistes fuscatus paper wasps, focusing on brain regions involved in visual and olfactory processing. We find that mature wasps regardless of social experience have relatively larger brains than newly emerged wasps and this difference is driven by changes to mushroom body calyx and visual regions but not olfactory processing neuropils. Notably, social wasps invest more in the anterior optic tubercle (AOT), a visual glomerulus involved in colour and object processing in other taxa, relative to other visual integration centres the mushroom body calyces compared with aged socially naive wasps. Differences in developmental plasticity between visual and olfactory neuropil volumes are discussed in light of behavioural maturation in paper wasps, especially as it relates to social recognition. Previous research has shown that P. fuscatus need social experience to develop specialized visual processing of faces, which is used to individually recognize conspecifics. The present study suggests that the AOT is a candidate brain region that could mediate facial processing in this species.  相似文献

BackgroundAn effective, green and rapid analytical strategy namely the simultaneous spray assisted droplet formation-liquid phase microextraction (S-SADF-LPME) method was developed for the determination of trace quantity of cadmium in saliva samples by using the slotted quartz tube-flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (SQT-FAAS). By the developed method, external dispersive solvent usage for droplet formation was reduced to obtain a more environmental-friendly method.MethodsMethod consists of a simultaneous complexing and extraction step, which was based on spraying an extraction solvent containing a solid ligand into the aqueous sample solution, forming fine droplets without the use of dispersive solvent. The procedure was implemented using a customized, cost effective and portable spray apparatus to minimize the consumption of reagent, analysis time and operation steps. Thus, this methodology ensures better repeatability and accuracy while minimizing the relative errors caused by the experimental steps. Parameters including the buffer amount, extractant/ligand concentration, extraction solvent type, extraction/ligand solution volume, spraying number and vortex period were systemically optimized to lower the detection limit.ResultsUnder the optimal extraction conditions, 96.9-folds enhancement in the detection power of the traditional FAAS was achieved. The limit of detection and limit of quantification values of presented method were calculated to be 0.65 and 2.17 ng mL−1, respectively. Accuracy and applicability of the optimized method was investigated by collecting saliva samples from smokers. Satisfactory percent recovery values wereachieved for cadmium with a low standard deviation in the acceptable range of 84.9–109.6 %.ConclusionThe developed dispersive solvent-free S-SADF-LPME technique presents a fast, simple, cost-effective and eco-friendly microextraction method based on the use of an easily accessible and functional spray apparatus.  相似文献

PurposeTo investigate whether exposure to occupational levels of organic solvents in the dry cleaning industry is associated with neurotoxic symptoms and visual deficits in the perception of basic visual features such as luminance contrast and colour, higher level processing of global motion and form (Experiment 1), and cognitive function as measured in a visual search task (Experiment 2).MethodsThe Q16 neurotoxic questionnaire, a commonly used measure of neurotoxicity (by the World Health Organization), was administered to assess the neurotoxic status of a group of 33 dry cleaners exposed to occupational levels of organic solvents (OS) and 35 age-matched non dry-cleaners who had never worked in the dry cleaning industry. In Experiment 1, to assess visual function, contrast sensitivity, colour/hue discrimination (Munsell Hue 100 test), global motion and form thresholds were assessed using computerised psychophysical tests. Sensitivity to global motion or form structure was quantified by varying the pattern coherence of global dot motion (GDM) and Glass pattern (oriented dot pairs) respectively (i.e., the percentage of dots/dot pairs that contribute to the perception of global structure). In Experiment 2, a letter visual-search task was used to measure reaction times (as a function of the number of elements: 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 100) in both parallel and serial search conditions.ResultsDry cleaners exposed to organic solvents had significantly higher scores on the Q16 compared to non dry-cleaners indicating that dry cleaners experienced more neurotoxic symptoms on average. The contrast sensitivity function for dry cleaners was significantly lower at all spatial frequencies relative to non dry-cleaners, which is consistent with previous studies. Poorer colour discrimination performance was also noted in dry cleaners than non dry-cleaners, particularly along the blue/yellow axis. In a new finding, we report that global form and motion thresholds for dry cleaners were also significantly higher and almost double than that obtained from non dry-cleaners. However, reaction time performance on both parallel and serial visual search was not different between dry cleaners and non dry-cleaners.ConclusionsExposure to occupational levels of organic solvents is associated with neurotoxicity which is in turn associated with both low level deficits (such as the perception of contrast and discrimination of colour) and high level visual deficits such as the perception of global form and motion, but not visual search performance. The latter finding indicates that the deficits in visual function are unlikely to be due to changes in general cognitive performance.  相似文献

Callus cultures were initiated from the bud apices of 10–40-year-old Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) at different seasons and maintained on modified MS medium without subculturing. Separate sets of experiments were used for analyses of carbohydrate content, ethylene production, amino acid composition, protein patterns andin vitro translation. In each case the change in the colour of the calli was recorded and the fresh mass of the samples measured. The onset of tissue browning was found to be associated with changes in protein pattern, amino acid content, ethylene production and the occurrence of sucrose and accumulation of starch.In vitro translation experiments using poIy(A)+ RNA isolated and purified from the calli indicated that the switch in metabolism accompanying browning is paralleled by activated protein synthesis. Thus, the development of brown colour does not as such seem to be harmful to the tissue. The later, more intense tissue browning and deterioration which is reflected in a reduced capacity for protein synthesis and changes in the free amino acid pool and protein pattern is probably a secondary phenomenon.  相似文献

Abstract

Fuchsia excorticata is a gynodioecious tree (endemic to New Zealand) which is pollinated by honeyeater birds. Red, tubular flowers are common among bird-pollinated plants, and the tubular flowers of F. excorticata change colour from green to red. The purpose of the present study was to describe the timing of the colour change, dropping of the floral tube, and nectar production of F. excorticata and to determine how bellbirds (Anthornis melanura) and two introduced species of nectar robbers (Zosterops lateralis and Bombus sp.) respond to the different colour phases.

Floral tubes fell off about 11 days after anthesis in both sexes, with colour change occurring on about Day-4 for female trees and on about Day-5 for hermaphrodite trees. Green-phase hermaphrodite flowers produced significantly more nectar/day than did green-phase female flowers, while red-phase flowers did not produce nectar in either sex. All three floral visitors studied preferentially visited green-phase flowers and virtually ignored the nectarless flowers in the red phase. These results contrast with the general association between red, bird-pollinated flowers and the presence of a nectar reward. We suggest that the non-migratory habit of the New Zealand honeyeaters and the lack of native insect visitors to this species may account for this anomalous green-to-red colour change.  相似文献

Colour variation is frequently observed in spiders. Such variation can impact fitness by affecting the way spiders are perceived by relevant observers such as prey (i.e. by resembling flower signals as visual lures) and predators (i.e. by disrupting search image formation). Verrucosa arenata is an orb-weaving spider that presents colour variation in a conspicuous triangular pattern on the dorsal part of the abdomen. This pattern has predominantly white or yellow colouration, but also reflects light in the UV part of the spectrum. We quantified colour variation in V. arenata from images obtained using a full spectrum digital camera. We obtained cone catch quanta and calculated chromatic and achromatic contrasts for the visual systems of Drosophila melanogaster and Apis mellifera. Cluster analyses of the colours of the triangular patch resulted in the formation of six clusters and three clusters in the colour space of D. melanogaster and A. mellifera, respectively. Significant differences were found between morphs for both visual systems in contrasts between the colour pattern and two backgrounds against which it would be viewed. Yellow spiders showed higher chromatic contrast than white spiders, while white spiders showed higher achromatic contrast. Therefore, there are perceptual differences between V. arenata colour morphs in the visual systems of potential relevant observers which could pose an important selective pressure on this trait. A variation in the contribution of colour channels to the colour pattern observed in colour maps constructed from reflectance values of individual pixels could influence the way the pattern is perceived, and its resemblance to attractive flower signals.  相似文献

The shallow water caridean shrimps Heptacarpus pictus and H. paludicola are polymorphic in colour pattern. Populations of these species collected over colour‐variable substrates showed the greatest degree of coloration in terms of the proportion of individuals displaying a distinct colour pattern. The frequencies of H. Pictus colour morphs varied significantly between most sampling periods. Apostatic selection by fish predators is suggested as one hypothesis which could explain these changes in morph frequency.

Experiments with Heptacarpus pictus on rapid colour change showed that, although some pigment migration did occur in the chromatosomes studied, the macroscopic appearance of the colour patterns was not altered when shrimps were shifted from black to white backgrounds or vice versa. The results of background choice experiments with H. pictus suggest that these shrimp do not seek out colour backgrounds that would seem to be a matching background in a concealing coloration. This behaviour is consistent with the morphology of the colour patterns which appears to be a disruptive coloration rather than a concealing coloration that closely matches a particular substrate.  相似文献

Growth and metabolic activities of Bacillus cereus were found to cause the extraction of iron atoms from the octahedral position in mica in the kaolin sample (49%) and in the quartz sands sample (17%) after 3 months of bioleaching, while aluminium removal was only 5%. Mica destruction was detected in kaolin and quartz sands samples by X-ray diffraction analysis and also by i.r. adsorption spectroscopy in quartz sands samples. The structural changes obtained were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The SEM pictures show a different morphology in the boundary region of mica grains before and after bioleaching. Bacterial destruction effects were feeble in the interlayer sites and were specially directed to split planes, which are occupied by a number of bacterial cells. The biological destruction of mica with phengite composition after iron removal led to development of illite, which was detected by energy-dispersion microanalysis (EDS). Illite development caused also the enrichment of the kaolin sample by fine-grained fraction.  相似文献

The appearance of faces can be strongly affected by the characteristics of faces viewed previously. These perceptual after-effects reflect processes of sensory adaptation that are found throughout the visual system, but which have been considered only relatively recently in the context of higher level perceptual judgements. In this review, we explore the consequences of adaptation for human face perception, and the implications of adaptation for understanding the neural-coding schemes underlying the visual representation of faces. The properties of face after-effects suggest that they, in part, reflect response changes at high and possibly face-specific levels of visual processing. Yet, the form of the after-effects and the norm-based codes that they point to show many parallels with the adaptations and functional organization that are thought to underlie the encoding of perceptual attributes like colour. The nature and basis for human colour vision have been studied extensively, and we draw on ideas and principles that have been developed to account for norms and normalization in colour vision to consider potential similarities and differences in the representation and adaptation of faces.  相似文献

A quartz chamber is proposed for use in experiments with planar lipid bilayer membranes. Membranes are formed in a hole made on the lateral wall of a fused quartz test tube, immersed in an electrolyte solution. The quartz cell is easy to clean, chemically inert and easily made. Membranes formed in this chamber had specific resistances higher than 108 Ω·cm2 and excellent mechanical stability.  相似文献

Quartz fields are rare features that contribute significantly to vegetation diversity and endemism of South Africa's Succulent Karoo Biome. The Riethuis-Wallekraal quartz fields in the north-western Namaqualand area of South Africa contain 17 quartz field specialist species of which seven are endemic to this specific area. Hoof-action by livestock has formed paths of approximately 0.30 m on these quartz fields. It would be important to conservationists to understand whether direct (e.g. trampling) and indirect effects (e.g. burial of flora by sediment movement) associated with the livestock paths holds any threat to the dwarf succulent (< 0.05 m) and micro-chamaephytes (0.06–0.15 m) endemic to the quartz fields. We tested the hypotheses that the unique quartz field vegetation and biological soil crusts would be affected by loose soil particles transported downslope from the paths. The soil stability index, total vegetation cover, cover of specialized quartz field species and species diversity were lower on livestock paths but did not differ between upslope and downslope locations. Livestock paths also had lower cover and fewer quartz field specialist species. It is concluded that under conditions of intense and continuous grazing, livestock are likely to have an even stronger negative impact on the specialist quartz field flora.  相似文献

BackgroundInnovative physical activity monitoring technology can be used to depict rich visual feedback that encompasses the various aspects of physical activity known to be important for health. However, it is unknown whether patients who are at risk of chronic disease would understand such sophisticated personalised feedback or whether they would find it useful and motivating. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether technology-enabled multidimensional physical activity graphics and visualisations are comprehensible and usable for patients at risk of chronic disease.MethodWe developed several iterations of graphics depicting minute-by-minute activity patterns and integrated physical activity health targets. Subsequently, patients at moderate/high risk of chronic disease (n=29) and healthcare practitioners (n=15) from South West England underwent full 7-days activity monitoring followed by individual semi-structured interviews in which they were asked to comment on their own personalised visual feedback Framework analysis was used to gauge their interpretation and of personalised feedback, graphics and visualisations.ResultsWe identified two main components focussing on (a) the interpretation of feedback designs and data and (b) the impact of personalised visual physical activity feedback on facilitation of health behaviour change. Participants demonstrated a clear ability to understand the sophisticated personal information plus an enhanced physical activity knowledge. They reported that receiving multidimensional feedback was motivating and could be usefully applied to facilitate their efforts in becoming more physically active.ConclusionMultidimensional physical activity feedback can be made comprehensible, informative and motivational by using appropriate graphics and visualisations. There is an opportunity to exploit the full potential created by technological innovation and provide sophisticated personalised physical activity feedback as an adjunct to support behaviour change.  相似文献

Colour change of soft denture liners after storage in coffee and coke This study was to evaluate the colour change of soft denture liners after thermocycling and storage in coffee and coke. Four liners, two silicone‐based (Sofreliner S and Reline GS) and two acrylic resin‐based (Soft Confort and Dentuflex), were evaluated in this study. Ten samples were obtained for each group. After 2000 cycles of thermocycling with baths of 5°C and 55°C, five samples were stored in coffee and the remaining samples in coke. The colour alteration was evaluated in a reflection spectrophotometer before and after thermocycling, and after 1, 3, 24, 48 and 96 h of storage in coffee and coke. Data were submitted to anova and Tukey’s HSD test (α = 0.05). Thermocycling and storage period represented a higher statistically significant influence for the resin liners than for the silicone materials. Coke did not influence the colour stability of the materials during storage. However, the coffee solution generated statistically significant colour alteration in the material Soft Confort. In the comparison between the coffee and coke solutions, there was no statistically significant difference for colour alteration only for the material Dentuflex. The silicone liners presented better colour stability following thermocycling and storage independent of the solution. The coffee solution was a statistically significant factor for colour alteration of the material Soft Confort.  相似文献

Abstract

The coloration and cuticular reflec-tivity of the three subspecies of the tiger beetle Neocicindela perhispida, that occur along coastal beaches of the North Island of New Zealand, were examined. The hardened forewings (elytra) of all three subspecies exhibited colour patterns that matched the sand of their respective beach habitats. The dark N. p. campbelli, which occurs on black ironsand beaches, absorbed significantly higher amounts of solar radiation than N. p. giveni whose white elytra blended well with the white quartz sands on which it occurred. The mottled N. p. perhispida, which inhabits yellowish-brown beaches, exhibited reflectivities generally intermediate to these two extremes.  相似文献

Carotenoid‐based colour expression is frequently involved in sexual dichromatism, particularly in bird plumage, suggesting a role in sexual selection. Despite much work on expression of the carotenoid‐based ventral plumage coloration of the great tit (Parus major), which represents a popular model in evolution and ecology, a consensus on even the most basic demographic patterns of variation (e.g. age and sex differences) is lacking. This may reflect the use of variable methods for analysing colour variation, although what is not clear, either in this case or in general, is the extent to which these alternative methods are equally effective at describing age‐ and sex‐related dichromatism. Using data obtained over 4 years from a large sample of free‐ranging great tits, we examined how colour‐scoring methodology influences estimates of age‐ and sex‐related dichromatism. We compare: (1) principal components analysis‐derived scores; (2) tristimulus colour variables; (3) a visual model‐independent, carotenoid‐focussed colour score; and (4) two colour scoring methods based on avian visual models, examining how they assess colour variation with respect to age and sex to determine how methodology may influence results. We demonstrate clear age‐ and sex‐dependent expression of this colour trait, both in our own data and in meta‐analyses of results from great tit populations across Europe, and discuss the merits of the various colour scores, which yield very different estimates of the extent of age‐ and sex‐dependent dichromatism. We show variation is likely to be visible to conspecifics and propose a novel, visual model‐derived scoring system for describing variation in carotenoid‐based colour patches, where the perceived signal is divided into independent chromatic and achromatic components, in line with current understanding of visual perception. Effect of thermocycling on hardness, absorption, solubility and colour change of soft liners Objective: The effect of artificial ageing on the hardness, absorption, solubility, and colour of soft denture liners was investigated. Materials and methods: Liner materials based on acrylic resin (Trusoft) or silicone (Dentusil, Ufi Gel P, and Ufi Gel SC) were tested before and after 2000 thermal cycles. A total of 20 specimens of each material were tested. Half of the specimens were used for hardness and colour evaluation, and the remainder for absorption and solubility tests. The hardness evaluation was carried out using a Shore A durometer, while absorption and solubility tests were performed by storing samples in a desiccator and weighing daily until reaching constant mass (W1). After thermocycling, the samples were again weighed (W2) and dried (W3). Colour was measured using a spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad InStat at the p < 0.05 level. Results: Thermocycling significantly affected the hardness of the specimens. The Trusoft material exhibited the highest absorption (1.48 ± 0.48), solubility (1.26 ± 0.28), and colour change (3.92 ± 0.33), significantly different from the other materials. There were no significant differences among the silicones in terms of absorption, solubility, and colour change, except for the colour of Dentusil, which changed (0.83 ± 0.11). Conclusion: It can be concluded that silicone liners performed significantly better compared to acrylic resin.  相似文献

Rapid colour change is a remarkable natural phenomenon that has evolved in several vertebrate and invertebrate lineages. The two principal explanations for the evolution of this adaptive strategy are (1) natural selection for crypsis (camouflage) against a range of different backgrounds and (2) selection for conspicuous social signals that maximise detectability to conspecifics, yet minimise exposure to predators because they are only briefly displayed. Here we show that evolutionary shifts in capacity for colour change in southern African dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion spp.) are associated with increasingly conspicuous signals used in male contests and courtship. To the chameleon visual system, species showing the most dramatic colour change display social signals that contrast most against the environmental background and amongst adjacent body regions. We found no evidence for the crypsis hypothesis, a finding reinforced by visual models of how both chameleons and their avian predators perceive chameleon colour variation. Instead, our results suggest that selection for conspicuous social signals drives the evolution of colour change in this system, supporting the view that transitory display traits should be under strong selection for signal detectability.  相似文献

  • Orchids are a classic angiosperm model for understanding biotic pollination. We studied orchid species within two species‐rich herbaceous communities that are known to have either hymenopteran or dipteran insects as the dominant pollinators, in order to understand how flower colour relates to pollinator visual systems.
  • We analysed features of the floral reflectance spectra that are significant to pollinator visual systems and used models of dipteran and hymenopteran colour vision to characterise the chromatic signals used by fly‐pollinated and bee‐pollinated orchid species.
  • In contrast to bee‐pollinated flowers, fly‐pollinated flowers had distinctive points of rapid reflectance change at long wavelengths and a complete absence of such spectral features at short wavelengths. Fly‐pollinated flowers also had significantly more restricted loci than bee‐pollinated flowers in colour space models of fly and bee vision alike.
  • Globally, bee‐pollinated flowers are known to have distinctive, consistent colour signals. Our findings of different signals for fly pollination is consistent with pollinator‐mediated selection on orchid species that results from the distinctive features of fly visual systems.
