Summary Among the mobile element systems in maize, the En (Spm) system (En — the regulatory element and I the receptive element — a nonfunctional En) has several interesting aspects of control of gene expression (En and Spm are homologous in structure and activity). One of the alleles arising from the Spm group included the a-m2 8004 allele that has a low spotting pattern and unique ringed areas. The interest in this allele is that Spm or En will induce it to co-express the A phenotype and mutability. Several exceptions of the allele were analyzed. Two are Spm changes and two are I changes. The analysis shows that the heritable changes include I changes that are co-expressed in various grades of color and different degrees of mutability. All these changes occur with I at the locus. Objective: We investigated whether air displacement plethysmography (ADP) could detect small changes in body composition of obese subjects with alterations in hydration. Research Methods and Procedures: Ten obese subjects (mean BMI, 39.3 ± 2.8 kg/m2) entered the ADP chamber without and with oil (1, 2, or 4 liters), water (1, 2, or 4 liters), or mixed (1 liter oil + 1 liter water or 2 liters oil + 2 liters water) loads. Real and measured changes in body composition were compared by regression analysis and Bland‐Altman procedures. Results: The ADP‐measured changes in volume did not differ from the real values and were strongly correlated with them (r = 0.98). In all cases, loads of differing composition and similar volume led to different values of fat, fat‐free mass, and percentage fat. Water was detected as increased fat‐free mass only with loads of ≥2 liters, most of the water being falsely detected as increased fat mass. The observed changes were correlated with the real ones for fat mass (r = 0.68; p < 0.0001), fat‐free mass (r = 0.66; p < 0.0001), and percentage fat (r = 0.61; p < 0.0001), but fat mass changes were overestimated by ~1 kg, and fat‐free mass changes were underestimated by ~1 kg. This underestimation increased with the highest water loads, as shown by the Bland‐Altman plot (r = ?0.27; p < 0.05). Percentage fat changes were overestimated by 0.8% (p < 0.001); the magnitude of the error was correlated with the weight of the water load (r = 0.62; p < 0.0001). Discussion: ADP accurately measures changes in body volume, discriminating small changes in body composition. It overestimates changes in adiposity, as most of the increased hydration is detected as an enlarged fat mass.  相似文献

Sequential stages of pigment degradation and ultrastructural changes were examined in cyanobacteria Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413, Synechococcus sp. PCC 6301 (Anacystis nidulans) and S. elongatus B-267 during irradiation of cell suspensions with high-intensity light. Early manifestations of photooxidative destruction were evident as profound changes in ultrastructure of thylakoids; in A. variabilis these changes appeared even before bleaching of pigments. Concomitant to these alterations, the cytoplasmic matrix turned homogenous and the nucleoid was subject to degradation, while ultrastructural changes of cytoplasmic membrane and cell walls became evident in some species. In A. variabilis these changes were related to a subsequent autolysis of cells. Synechococcus strains demonstrated comparatively high resistance to irradiation. The experimental data were compared with previously described behavior of the same species of cyanobacteria cultured under photooxidative conditions. This comparison revealed principal similarity and species-specific features in the destructive changes of thylakoids and other cell components of cyanobacterial cells.  相似文献

Pollen morphology and ultrastructure inLactuceae pollen is considered in relation to the accomodation of volume changes, pollination biology and exine-held substances. Echinate pollen grains, such as those ofCatananche, are shown to accomodate volume changes by folding along the colpi and possibly by volume changes in the cavea. The different patterns of echinolophate pollen respond in different ways. Folding along the colpi is important inScorzonera andTragopogon and to a limited extent inCichorium andEpilasia whilst inScolymus the colpi are almost immobilized. Movements of the lacunar floors take over the harmomegathic function to compensate for lack of colpus mobility. Bulging of the intine at the apertures and changes in the size of the cavea may account for part of the volume change accomodated in any pollen type. Echinolophate pollen is interpreted as being a superior means of regulating volume changes with the most economical and mechanically efficient use of wall material which has evolved independently in several tribes ofCompositae.  相似文献

Evolutionary shape changes in skull and mandibular anatomy was analysed in 223 specimens of pantherine felids (Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera leo, Panthera onca, Panthera pardus, Panthera tigris, Panthera uncia) compared to a small‐felid outgroup, consisting of 86 specimens of nine different species, using digital surface morphometry on 25 (skull) and 17 (mandible) landmarks. Shape evolution in the pantherine species is complex and nonlinear, and involves both large‐scale and small‐scale shape changes. Shape changes frequently differ among the ingroup species, but the four large Panthera species (leo, onca, pardus, tigris) bear some resemblance to each other. The leopard and jaguar bear the closest resemblance to each other, and several shape changes are common to the lion and tiger, but have probably evolved convergently as a result of large size. The lion has undergone the largest and most numerous shape changes from a small‐felid outgroup. Certain shape changes in the skull and, in some respects, the mandible of the clouded leopard bear resemblance to those in the four large Panthera species. The snow leopard is often regarded as the most primitive of the extant Panthera, and skull and mandibular shape changes often diverge markedly from those observed in the other five ingroup taxa; its overall skull shape is rather similar to the small‐felid outgroup. This indicates that the shape changes in the clouded leopard are convergent with those of the four large Panthera species. Landmark integration showed no significant correlation with molecular phylogeny, chiefly owing to the snow leopard being placed among the four large Panthera species. Bush encroachment can have profound effects on the ability of savanna ecosystems to provide goods and services to society. It is therefore crucial to understand the key drivers of bush encroachment in savannas. In this study, we test whether decadal changes in mean annual rainfall significantly explain changes in the dominant patch size as well as the density of bush patches at six protected savanna sites located along a rainfall gradient in Zimbabwe. We first performed Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet transform within the intensity‐dominant scale theoretical framework on multi‐temporal aerial photographs and high spatial resolution satellite imagery to objectively detect changes in the dominant patch dimension as well as the intensity of bush cover over a 40‐year period at six test sites. We then pooled the data and performed regression analysis relating changes in dominant scale and intensity to decadal changes in mean annual rainfall in order to deduce a possible connection between dynamics of bush encroachment and rainfall variability. Our results indicate a significant nonlinear relationship between changes in the dominant scale and decadal changes in mean annual rainfall (R2 = 0.85, F13 = 35.96, P < 0.01). In contrast, the relationship between decadal changes in mean annual rainfall and changes in intensity was weak and not significant (R2 = 0.29, F13 = 2.69, P = 0.106). These results imply the importance of annual rainfall in explaining long‐term changes in the dominant scale of woody patches. However, mechanisms other than rainfall probably explain changes in the intensity of bush cover, and this needs further investigation.  相似文献

Changes in net CO2 assimilation rate (A) are often partitioned into contributions from changes in different variables using an approach that is based on an expression from calculus: namely the definition of the exact differential of A, which states that an infinitesimal change in A (dA) is equal to the sum of infinitesimal changes in each of the underlying variables, each multiplied by the partial derivative of A with respect to the variable. Finite changes in A can thus be partitioned by integrating this sum across a finite interval. The most widely used method of estimating that integral is a coarse discrete approximation that uses partial derivatives of the natural logarithm of A rather than A itself. This yields biased and ambiguous estimates of partitioned changes in A. We present an alternative partitioning approach based on direct numerical integration of dA. The new approach does not require any partial derivatives to be computed, and it can be applied under any conditions to estimate the contributions from changes in any photosynthetic variable. We demonstrate this approach using field measurements of both seasonal and diurnal changes in assimilation rate, and we provide a spreadsheet implementing the new approach.  相似文献

The problem considered in this paper is the estimation of the underlying order of m physiological changes from incomplete observations. The observations are incomplete in the sense that, for each individual in the sample, only the identity, but not the order, of the first k < m changes are observed, with k varying between individuals. The abundances of four dominant Antarctic copepod species, Metridia gerlachei, Rhincalanus gigas, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus, were examined in the Southern Ocean in a combination of a literature review, analysis of museum samples and field sampling. The data were analysed for spatial and temporal variations. The data included in the analysis were from the Weddell Sea area in the summertime at periods 1929–1939 and 1989–1993. The results are discussed in the light of environmental changes and their hypothesised and observed consequences in the Southern Ocean: global temperature change, ozone deficiency and cascading trophic interactions. Combining all these hypothetical effects our null hypothesis was that there were no consistent long-term changes in the abundance of dominant pelagic Copepoda. The null hypothesis was rejected, since several taxons did show statistically significant long-term changes in abundance. The changes were not uniform however. The numbers of adults and juveniles of Calanus propinquus increased significantly between the periods studied. Adult stages of Calanoides acutus were the only taxon decreasing in abundance, in concert with the cascading trophic interactions theory. Latitudinally, only Metridia gerlachei showed a significant increase from north to south. Longitudinally, the abundances of Calanus propinquus juveniles and both adults and juveniles of Rhincalanus gigas increased from west to east. There were no significant variations between day and night samples. Interannual changes were statistically significant in juvenile stages of all the species and in adults of Calanus propinquus. We conclude that no uniform and consistent abundance changes could be observed in the pelagic Copepoda of the Weddell Sea that could be connected to major environmental changes, expected to affect the whole planktonic ecosystem of the Southern Ocean. Significant changes in some of the species studied show that the pelagic ecosystem is not in a steady state, but in addition to interannual changes, there are also major fluctuations extending over decades. A long-standing hypothesis posits that morphological changes may be more likely to result from changes in regulation of gene expression than from changes in the protein coding sequences of genes. We have compared the expression pattern of the twisted gastrulation (tsg) gene among five Drosophila species: D. melanogaster, D. simulans, D. subobscura, D. mojavensis, and D. virilis. The tsg gene encodes a secreted protein that is required for the specification of dorsal midline fates in the Drosophila early embryo. TSG is unlike other secreted growth and differentiation factors in Drosophila in that its expression pattern can be experimentally varied and still result in normal development. Because of this, its regulatory region may be freer to diverge than that of other developmental genes whose misexpression may lead to lethal defects. Thus, the tsg gene may be a good indicator of the frequency and nature of evolutionary changes affecting patterns of gene expression. Over ∼60 million years (Myr), the tsg gene has retained a dorsal-on/ventral-off pattern and a middorsal region of expression; but there have been marked changes in the middorsal domain of expression as well as the appearance/loss of other domains of expression along the anterior/posterior axis. Changes between closely related species (∼2–5 Myr since divergence) that are not reflected among more distantly related species suggest frequent changes in gene expression over evolutionary time. Summary Transposable (controlling) elements in maize are highly variable in their versatility in inducing changes at any locus. With the Enhancer (En) (Suppressor-Mutator-Spm) controlling-element system,a multitude of changes result from the action of En on specific alleles. One such allele, McClintock's a-m-1 6078 allele, illustrates the diversity of events that can take place that involve three parameters; namely, spotting-timing, spotting-frequency, and background pigment formation with and without En. A series of derivative alleles has been isolated and described according to the three paramters. Ultrastructural changes occurring in the central part of the apical meristem of the SDP Xanthium strumarium, induced to flower by a single 16-hr long night, were quantitatively investigated using stereological methods and compared to the changes previously reported in other species, particularly the LDP Sinapis alba. Changes detected in Xanthium, which are also found in other species, included: increase in cellular, cytoplasmic, cytoplasmic matrix and nucleolar sizes, change in nucleolar structure; increase in mitochondrial number and chondriome size, increase in dictyosome number. These changes are believed to be essential for floral evocation because of their universality. Other changes were specific to Xanthium and not detected in Sinapis. Accordingly, they were thought to be accompanying nonessential events of floral evocation in Xanthium. These changes included an increase in the number of plastid profiles and in plastidome size. The size of the nucleus, chromatin and vacuolar apparatus, as well as the number of vacuolar profiles, did not change in Xanthium, contrary to what was observed in other plants.  相似文献

定量认识和理解气候与流域特征变化对淮河流域地表水文过程的影响,可以为科学管理淮河流域水资源提供重要的理论参考和技术支撑。评估了多控制因子联立求解归因方法的适用性,以此量化了淮河流域气候和Budyko参数n对不同年代蒸散发(ET)、径流变化(较基准期1961—1980年)的贡献,并且进行了归因分析,结果表明:1)多控制因子联立求解法可以准确有效地分离气候和参数n对ET和径流变化的贡献。2)在气候和参数n变化的共同影响下,20世纪80年代、90年代的ET和径流在沂沭泗河各水文分区均呈减小趋势,而在上游和中游各水文分区的变化则表现出明显的时空差异性。3)就各年代控制ET变化的主要因子,多数水文分区为参数n,其次为降水和潜在蒸散发(PET),分别集中在沂沭泗河地区和淮河上游。20世纪80年代,中游水文分区径流变化的主控因子为PET,其他水文分区则多为降水;而20世纪90年代和21世纪初多数水文分区的主控因子为参数n,其次为降水。总之,控制淮河流域ET和径流变化的物理机制具有明显的空间差异和年代际变化特征。  相似文献

Seasonal changes in surface cover and long-term floral changes in aquatic plants of a shallow eutrophic pond, Ojaga-ike, as well as the phenology of each species, were studied. Out of ten floating-leaved and submerged plants, the following five species showed a change in surface cover during 1978: Potamogeton crispus and Elodea nuttallii occupied 53.5% of the total pond surface in May, Trapa natans and Nelumbo nucifera 79.1% in July, N. nucifera and Hydrilla verticillata 62.0% in September and N. nucifera 41.2% in November. In addition to dramatic seasonal changes in surface cover, long-term floral changes occurred in this pond from 1971 onwards. While Nymphoides indica, Myriophyllum spicatum and H. verticillata decreased in number and in distribution ranges between 1971 and 1978, two newly established plants, N. nucifera and E. nuttallii, have now become dominant. The alteration in dominance may be due to water level fluctuations and interspecific competition for light. Seasonal changes in water quality during the study period are also summarized.  相似文献

During the 10000-year history of the Ostrowite Lake, there have been several episodes of change in dominance amongst species of the genus Bosmina. The dominants were alternately B.longirostris and Eubosmina spp. Amongst the subgenus Eubosmina, two species prevailed in different periods:Bosmina coregoni and Bosmina reflexa. The first species, Bosmina coregoni, is characterized by long antennae and short carapace mucrones, while the second one, Bosmina reflexa, by short antennae and very long mucrones. Bosmina reflexa was dominant at the beginning of the lake's history (Preboreal, 10000--9000 BP) and during the early Subboreal Period (5000–3500 BP). Only a small number of remains of Bosmina longispina(Eubosmina spp.) were present along the entire profile. Such strong changes in the domination of Bosmina species were observed for the first time in the sediments of Polish lakes. A similar transition from one species to another has been described in a few German lakes and was linked to climate changes. However, the changes in the Ostrowite Lake do not correlate with climate changes, but most probably, with changes in the lake's trophic level. This is suggested by the simultaneous increase of Bosmina reflexa and a good indicator of eutrophy, Bosmina longirostris.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the extent to which variations in body composition modulate changes in the lipid profile in response to the ad libitum consumption of a diet rich in carbohydrates (CHOs) (high‐CHO diet: 58% of energy as CHOs) or high in fat and in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) (high‐MUFA diet: 40% of energy as fat, 23% as MUFAs). Research Methods and Procedures: Sixty‐three men were randomly assigned to one of the two diets that they consumed for 6 to 7 weeks. Body composition and fasting plasma lipid levels were measured at the beginning and the end of the dietary intervention. Results: The high‐CHO and high‐MUFA diets induced significant and comparable reductions in body weight and waist circumference. These changes were accompanied by significant and comparable (p < 0.01) reductions in total plasma cholesterol and low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. However, the high‐MUFA diet had more beneficial effects on plasma triglyceride concentrations (p < 0.01) and on plasma high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (p = 0.02) compared with the high‐CHO diet. Diet‐induced changes in waist circumference were significantly associated with changes in low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the high‐CHO group (r = 0.39, p = 0.03) but not in the high‐MUFA group (r = 0.16, p = 0.38). Discussion: Improvements in plasma lipids induced by the ad libitum consumption of a high‐CHO diet seem to be partly mediated by changes in body weight, whereas lipid changes induced by the high‐MUFA diet seem to be independent of changes in body weight.  相似文献

Three species of British voles, the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus, the field vole Microtus agrestis and the water vole Arvicola terrestris were maintained on diets of seed and plant leaf material to investigate changes in gut anatomy. C. glareolus and M. agrestis showed significant changes in most regions of the gut; they developed longer and heavier tracts when on a highfibre diet. This response may be important in enabling these animals to withstand seasonal changes in diet quality.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal changes of the copepod community have been investigated and related to the environmental variability of the Balearic Sea (Western Mediterranean). The period studied spans from 1994 to 1999 during which we analyzed the abundance and structure copepod variability over a cross-shore transect. Results showed a close link between hydrological changes and the variations of copepod abundance. The synchronous variability of copepods and hydrography indicated the rapid response of this zooplankton group to the inflow of cold and warm water masses coming through the study area. Cluster analysis revealed four main copepod assemblages that distinguished the coastal from the oceanic species and those species with different water masses preference. The copepod assemblage composed of Calanus helgolandicus, Clausocalanus arcuicornis, C. pergens, C. paululus, Calocalanus tenuis and Pleuromamma gracilis was associated with cool salty waters, whereas the assemblage formed by Temora stylifera, C. pavo, C. styliremis, Centropages bradyi and Acartia danae was related to warmer less saline Mediterranean waters. Moreover, it is suggested that changes in sea water temperature and salinity are linked to large-scale changes likely occurring at a basin scale, which is reflected in the Western Mediterranean mesoscale hydrographic changes. Therefore, it is stressed that changes in the Balearic copepod community can be used as potential tracers of the western Mediterranean water masses. Guest editors: S. Souissi & G. A. Objective: The association between circulating vascular adhesion protein‐1 (VAP‐1) and metabolic phenotypes has been shown to be inconsistent. The current study explored whether the changes in serum VAP‐1 levels correlate with the changes in metabolic phenotypes after weight reduction surgery. Research Methods and Procedures: Clinical characteristics and serum VAP‐1 levels in 20 morbidly obese subjects (mean BMI 38.84 kg/m2) were measured before and after vertical banded gastroplasty. Results: Before surgery, serum VAP‐1 levels correlated positively with fasting plasma glucose (γ = 0.56, p = 0.01) and negatively with insulin levels (γ = ?0.51, p = 0.021). After surgery, the changes in serum VAP‐1 levels were negatively correlated with the changes in waist circumference (γ = ?0.57, p = 0.011), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (γ = ?0.56, p = 0.015), and mean arterial pressure (γ = ?0.46, p = 0.055). In multivariate regression, serum VAP‐1 levels were negatively correlated with waist circumference (β = ?2.36, p = 0.014) and DBP (β = ?3.02, p = 0.017) after adjusting for age and gender. The change in DBP was negatively correlated with the change in VAP‐1 levels after adjusting for age, gender, and steady‐state plasma glucose. Discussion: The results suggest that VAP‐1 levels are correlated with fasting glucose and insulin levels in morbidly obese subjects. After surgery, the changes in VAP‐1 levels were associated with changes in visceral adiposity and DBP. Serum VAP‐1 might modulate DBP independently from the changes in insulin resistance in morbidly obese people.  相似文献
