Fat deposits are effective indicators of the nutritional status of wild populations of ungulates. Three fat indices (kidney fat, femur marrow fat and mandible marrow fat) of sika deer (Cervus nippon) at Mount Goyo, northern Japan, were compared. The kidney fat index (KFI) was suitable for good and intermediate nutritional status, but could not precisely reflect poor conditions. Bone marrow fat indices (MFI) were not good indicators because samples with high MFI values did not distinguish between samples whose KFI values were different, and samples collected in non-winter seasons did not cover the range of poor conditions. It is therefore recommended to use both the KFI and the femur-MFI complementarily.  相似文献

The level of fat reserves of an animal gives a good indication of body condition. Riney (1955) who studied various methods of evaluating condition in Red deer in New Zealand considered that fat was deposited in a pre-determined sequence over the range of body weight studied, which had been described earlier by Hammond (1932) as a general sequence in farm animals. Fat was deposited firstly in the bone marrow, then around the kidney, and finally subcutaneously. He concluded that kidney fat, expressed as a percentage of kidney weight, was the best index of condition as it embraced almost the entire range of physical condition. However, several authors have noted that small areas of fat are found around the kidneys of starved animals with marrow fat percentages < 80% (Ransom, 1965; Brooks, Hanks & Ludbrook, 1977; Anderson, Medin & Bowden, 1972). This means that values for kidney fat index of below < 40% may not be reliable, as another fat store, the marrow fat is depleted in parallel with it and not after it as Riney (1955) suggested. The relationship between kidney fat index and marrow fat at low levels of kidney fat index has been shown for White tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus (Ransom, 1963, Eland Taurotragus oryx , Impala (Aepyceros melampus) and Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) Brooks et al. , 1977 and Mule deer 0. hemionus (Trainer, Hartmann & Kistner, 1979) but has never been shown for Red deer. The kidney fat index (KFI) was used to examine the condition of nyala over a 27-m-onth period. From a sample in which both marrow fat and KFI were examined, it was noted that, as has been found in other bovid, kidney fat was mobilized before marrow fat. Seasonal changes in condition were observed and correlated with the rainfall in the previous month. Following periods of less than 50 mm of rain, the larger adult males were in significantly poorer condition than other animals.
The sexual difference in condition is attributed to the differences in body size, where males of asymptotic body mass required 62% more kcal/day than asymptotic mass females. When die-offs occurred during periods of nutritional stress, significantly more old adults died than would be expected. Further, significantly more males died than females.  相似文献

The relationship between reproductive activity, body growth and condition in the male Impala is examined. Body growth is described by the use of the von Bertalanffy equation, and asymptotic values for each parameter are given together with the age at which these are attained. Seasonal changes in body condition are determined by the use of the kidney index and the fat content of the bone marrow, and this is related to body weight and the time of the rut. Growth and development of the reproductive organs with age and season are described in relation to reproductive activity.  相似文献

Improvement of fillet traits and flesh quality attributes are of great interest in farmed tilapia and other aquaculture species. The main objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for fillet traits (fillet weight and fillet yield) and the fat content of fillets from 1136 males combined with 2585 data records on growth traits (body weight at 290 days, weight at slaughter, and daily weight gain) of 1485 males and 1100 females from a third generation of the Aquaamerica tilapia strain. Different models were tested for each trait, and the best models were used to estimate genetic parameters for the fat content, fillet, and growth traits. Genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated using two-trait animal models. The heritability estimates were moderate for the fat content of fillets and fillet yield (0.2–0.32) and slightly higher for body weight at slaughter (0.41). The genetic correlation between fillet yield and fat was significant (0.6), but the genetic correlations were not significant between body weight and fillet yield, body weight and fat content, daily weight gain and fillet yield, and daily weight gain and fat content (? 0.032, ? 0.1, ? 0.09, and ? 0.4, respectively). Based on the genetic correlation estimates, it is unlikely that changes in fillet yield and fat content will occur when using growth performance as a selection criterion, but indirect changes may be expected in fat content if selecting for higher fillet yield.  相似文献

Variation of the intraruminal papillation pattern with diet quality has been described in many ruminant species, but the use of papillation measures as a proxy for habitat quality and nutritional status of animals has not been evaluated. We compared various measures of body condition (body mass, body condition score, kidney fat index, bone marrow fat index, adrenal mass, kidney to adrenal mass ratio), diet quality (%browse, protein and fibre content) and rumen papillation in 106 impalas (Aepyceros melampus) from four different locations in Zimbabwe. The various condition proxies indicated that periods of low diet quality are characterised by a high proportion of browse in the diet of this species. Animals with a high proportion of browse had more voluminous rumens, suggesting a compensation for lower diet quality by increased intake. Macroscopic papillation indices did not yield meaningful significant correlations with diet quality or body condition proxies, and hence, their use for estimating habitat or body condition cannot be advocated. In contrast to previous histological reports, ballooning cells of the Stratum corneum of the ruminal mucosa were more prominent in animals on lower-quality diets. There were significant correlations of the kidney to adrenal mass ratio with other body conditions and with diet quality indices, suggesting that poor body condition and low diet quality represent stressful situations.  相似文献

Flaxseed's oil and lignan, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), are implicated in attainment of health and treatment of renal injury and osteoporosis. To test for these benefits, weanling Han:SPRD-cy rats (n=171) with or without kidney disease were randomized to diets made with either corn oil or flaxseed oil and with or without SDG for 12 weeks. In females, weight was lower with the SDG diet. In males fed flaxseed oil, lean mass was higher and fat % was lower. In both sexes, fat % was lower in diseased rats. Bone mineral content (BMC) and density were higher in rats fed flaxseed oil and lower in diseased rats, additionally; BMC was lower in SDG-supplemented females. The benefit of flaxseed oil on body composition is sex specific but the effect on bone mass is not. Lastly, reduced weight due to early rat kidney disease is not due to loss of lean body mass.  相似文献

A total of 1248 rabbits ( Oryctolagus amiculus ) were shot on farmland in Cambridgeshire, UK over a period of three years. This provided pooled estimates of changes in reproductive and body condition and of fecundity during the annual cycle. Both males and females showed a significant annual cycle in reproductive condition as indicated by changes in the size of the gonads and accessory glands of reproduction. No females were pregnant during October, November and December, but males with active spermatogenesis were found during every month of the year. The distribution of pregnancies through the year showed that the reproductive season varied greatly between individuals. Peak fecundity occurred during April, May and June. On average, each female conceived 23.9 and suckled 17.2 young per breeding season. Proportionately more young died during the early stages of the reproductive season. The body weight of adult males, but not of females, varied seasonally. Body condition (kidney fat index) in adults was maximal at the start of the breeding season and minimal at the end.  相似文献

We analyzed seasonal and sexual fluctuations in kidney mass (KM) and kidney fat mass (KFM) as indices of condition in Hokkaido sika deerCervus nippon yesoensis Heude, 1884. For 76 male and 132 female sika deer, seasonal fluctuations in KM and KFM were given by fitted sine wave growth curves. Although the kidney fat index (KFI) is used frequently to evaluate animal condition, we reject it because it is based on the assumption that kidney mass is proportional to body mass in all seasons. Our data did not support this assumption. KFM is a better indicator of Hokkaido sika deer condition than KFI. Although sex-based differences in cervid KFM are said to reflect differences in reproductive cycles, the seasonal similarities in sika deer KFM levels may represent adaptations to the long severe Hokkaido winter. Because in our study deer populations were at low densities and had high pregnancy rates, our sine wave growth models can be regarded as reference for fat level fluctuations in Hokkaido sika deer.  相似文献

From a literature review of five wildlife ecology journals since 1937, we document how using indices to monitor ungulate body condition is common practice, with the kidney fat index (KFI = weight of fat around the kidneys/weight of kidneys without fat × 100) as the favoured tool (82% of studies). In this context, we highlight the problems of using indices when underlying statistical assumptions are not met (isometry, parallel slopes between treatments). We show, with real and simulated data for two cervids with contrasting fat storage strategies, how results from analysis of variance of KFI values differ from analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) of raw data. We conclude that the KFI is affected by the restrictions typically associated with derived index values, and as a consequence, statistical analysis of the KFI could generate spurious results leading to erroneous interpretations concerning variation in body condition of ungulate populations. Thus, we recommend analysing fat weight as an untransformed variable in ANCOVA (kidney weight as covariate) to describe body condition variation in ungulates. 对呼伦贝尔草原地区黄羊肾脏重量和肾脏中心脂肪指数的变化进行了研究。初步评价了不同年龄-性别组黄羊以及不同季节黄羊体况的差异。发现:黄羊左肾重量大于右肾,不同年龄-性别组黄羊间肾重存在极显的差异(P<0.01),并且肾重与体重呈显的正相关性(P<0.01);黄羊肾重存在季节性差异,春季肾重大于秋、冬二季;KMFI值在不同的年龄-性别组间也呈明显的差异性(P<0.01),KMFI值亦与体重吴正相关性(P<0.01);不同的季节,黄羊KMFI值差异明显(P<0.01)。黄羊秋季体况最好,而冬末春初则较差。  相似文献

Body condition is a useful measure of the nutritional status and performance in ungulates. The most widely used indicators of body condition are based on fat reserves, mainly those surrounding the kidneys. To estimate the body condition in large herbivores, researchers often collect and pool the data from both kidneys and their perirenal fat in order to compensate for potential differences between the body condition indicators obtained from the left and right kidneys. Since these differences do not seem to be properly established in wildlife, we checked for the potential differences between the body condition indicators, derived from both kidneys, in wild ungulates. In the present study, we used red deer Cervus elaphus, both under experimental and field conditions, as a model to analyse the patterns of response of the body condition indicators, calculated from left and right kidneys, to supplementary feeding, sex, age class and season. By considering two analytical approaches – kidney fat index and fat weight (including kidney weight as a covariate) – we consistently obtained similar statistical results and the same ecological interpretations by using left, right and average indicators for all the factors tested. In the experimental study, supplementary feeding had a significant effect on all the body condition indicators of red deer hinds. Under field circumstances, the condition indicators were statistically higher in females than in males and they increased with age. Sex related differences were significant in the winter. Taking into account our results, we hypothesize that information from only one kidney will be enough to assess the body condition in red deer and probably in other wild ungulates. However, a standardized sample (i.e. always using the same kidney and associated fat) should be used, while a better understanding regarding possible asymmetries in the amount of the energy reserves on each side of the animals’ bodies has not been reached. Our study has clear implications concerning wildlife monitoring since it represents a considerable reduction of time and effort, both in the field (collecting the samples) and in the laboratory (processing and weighing the samples) when evaluating the body condition of individuals and populations.  相似文献

Ultrasound (A-scan mode) and skinfold methods were evaluated in the measurement of subcutaneous fat thickness and prediction of total fat weight (by whole body potassium counting). Based on intraobserver correlations on 39 men at 15 body sites, skinfold caliper measurements were more reproducible than ones obtained by ultrasound. Measurements made with the two techniques at the same site typically produced different mean estimates of fat thickness. However, scores were often highly correlated with each other, indicating similar relative rankings of subjects by each technique. Skinfolds were more highly correlated with total fat weight than were ultrasound measurements, but body weight and anthropometric measures had even higher correlations with total fat weight. Anthropometric measurements were highly correlated with fatness because of their association with body weight, and when this relationship was statistically controlled for, they typically lost their predictive effectiveness. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the best predictors of fat weight were body weight along with skinfold and ultrasound measurements. These results suggest that skinfolds are a more effective means of assessing subcutaneous fat than ultrasound, especially when the large difference in cost of equipment is considered.  相似文献

Abstract: We developed new, and validated existing, indices of nutritional condition for live and dead mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). Live animal indices included a body condition score (BCS), thickness of subcutaneous fat and selected muscles using ultrasonography, and body mass. Dead animal indices included femur, metatarsal, and mandible marrow fat, 3 kidney fat indices, and 2 carcass scoring methods. We used 21 female deer and 4 castrates (1-11 yr old) varying widely in nutritional condition (2-28% ingesta-free body fat). Deer were euthanized and homogenized for chemical analysis of fat, protein, water, and ash content. Estimates of fat and gross energy (GE) were regressed against each condition indicator using regression. Subcutaneous fat thickness, a rump BCS, and rLIVINDEX (an arithmetic combination of subcutaneous fat thickness and the rump BCS) were most related to condition for live animals (r2 ≥ 0.87, P < 0.001) whereas the Kistner score and kidney fat were most related to fat and GE for dead animals (r2 ≥ 0.77, P < 0.001). We also evaluated range of usefulness and sensitivity to small changes in body condition for all models. In general, indices with moderate or highly curvilinear statistical relations to body fat or those based on only one fat depot or a small number of ranking scores will have limitations in their use. Our results identify robust tools for a variety of research and monitoring designs useful for evaluating nutrition's effect on mule deer populations.  相似文献

Caseinomacropeptide (CMP) is a glycopeptide of 64 amino acid residues derived from theC-terminal of mammalian milkk-casein. Recently, human CMP (hCMP) was produced from the recombinant yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, the antiobesity activity of the recombinant hCMP (rhCMP) was investigatedin vivo using Sprague-Dawley rats. The rhCMP did not affect the rats fed with a normal fat diet (fat content, 5.0%), but decreased the body weight gain of the rats fed with a high fat diet (fat content, 20%) by up to 19%. Autopsies revealed that the weights of the liver, kidney and adipose tissues decreased when the rats were given the rhCMP, which also reduced the lipid concentrations in the plasma and liver, but enhanced the fecal excretion of lipids. These results suggest that rhCMP prevent the accumulation of lipid by stimulating its fecal excretion, so could be used as a food supplement to alleviate the obesity problem caused by a high fat diet.  相似文献

Based on the results of a study conducted in the Buyunda River basin (tributary of the Kolyma River) in 2006–2010, influence of the population density of shrews (Sorex) on some physiological and biochemical parameters (glycogen and lipids in the liver, relative weight of the spleen, white and brown adipose tissue, cellularity of bone marrow) was investigated. The content of energy reserve substances was found to be closely connected with the number of animals (fat deposits had inverse relation; glycogen content in the liver had direct relation). Other physiological-biochemical parameters had no significant relation to the population density, although such tendency was observed for the content of brown fat and cellularity of bone marrow tissue in Sorex isodon, and for the relative weight of the spleen in both species of shrews. We suggest that the identified physiological changes indicate irregular feeding of animals in years with higher population densities.  相似文献

To examine the relations between pregnancy, body condition, and lactation, 106 adult female caribou Rangifer tarandus granti ) of the Porcupine Herd were captured, weighed, measured, and scored for body condition in November 1990–1992. Blood samples were drawn for determination of pregnancy, and body fat content (kg) was estimated from the product of body weight and the body-condition score. Pregnant females were significantly fatter and heavier than non-pregnant females, and non- lactating females were significantly fatter, but no heavier, than lactating caribou. Probability of pregnancy was positively correlated with body weight and fat content, but prediction of pregnancy was improved when multiple independent variables, including skeletal dimensions and lactation status, were included in logistic models. Non-lactating females were more fertile than lactating females at a particular body weight and metatarsus length; but, at the same fatness, they were not more fertile than females that had lactated through the summer and were ceasing lactation in November. However, females that were extending lactation in November were least fertile, and this reduction of fertility was not explained by differences in body condition or skeletal dimensions. We suggest that the extended lactation group is exhibiting lactational infertility. Finally, unexplained differences in the relation between pregnancy rate and body condition exist among years, suggesting that interannual patterns in the nutrition and ecology of caribou affect the physiological relation between pregnancy and body condition.  相似文献

The condition and age of Thomson's gazelles ( Gazella thomsoni ) killed by two species of predators were compared. The wild dog, a coursing predator, was predicted to take a greater proportion of young, old and sick animals than the cheetah, a stalker. As measured by the marrow fat content of limb bones, wild dogs captured more Thomson's gazelles in poor condition than cheetahs. This appeared to be a consequence of their preference for male gazelles, which were in worse condition than females. Cheetahs did not capture fewer young and old gazelles than wild dogs.  相似文献

The feasibility of using Buzzards found dead as indicators of environmental contamination was tested. Liver, kidney, and tibia specimens were examined for the presence of Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn, and Fe, which were used as markers. All buzzards submitted to the Veterinary Institute in 1992 were examined for cause of death and condition. Results showed that more than half had been poisoned or shot. As the condition of the birds worsened, fat reserves were depleted before protein reserves. Concentrations of the heavy metals rose in liver and kidney as nutrient reserves fell. Since the content of heavy metal per organ was not related to body condition, content was considered a better measure for biomonitoring. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn, or Fe measured in buzzards were not toxic. In several places buzzards had recently ingested relatively large amounts Cd and/or Pb. Buzzards with high contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Mn were found in areas having more than average contamination. The North-South gradient in aerosol deposition and soil content of heavy metals (especially Cd & Pb) was reflected in the Buzzard. We concluded that the Buzzard is a suitable and cost-effective biomonitor, to investigate the bioavailability of ecocontaminants in large areas, to signal gross changes in food webs, and to monitor raptor persecution.  相似文献
