Although ascidians are conspicuous members of the fouling community not much is known regarding their recruitment patterns in coral reefs. A 1-year study was carried out along the Red Sea coast of Israel to examine the effects of season and spatial distribution on ascidian recruitment to artificial marine structures. In general, autumn and spring were characterized by higher coverage with a significantly higher percentage of cover of Didemnum granulatum in autumn and higher numbers of Herdmania momus in spring. These species contributed the most to similarity between treatments consequently setting the pattern for each group (colonial and solitary). Halocynthia spinosa had significantly higher numbers during winter and Phallusia nigra was absent in spring and winter. H. momus showed a preference for horizontal surfaces. P. nigra and Ascidia cannelata showed a preference for floating units. It is concluded that the ascidian recruitment patterns are species-specific and vary between seasons, orientation and position on the substrata and in the water column.  相似文献

海鞘生长快,繁殖迅速,能产生大量在短时间内附着的幼虫,是海洋污损生物群落中的重要成员,对海上人工设施会产生严重危害。污损性海鞘主要由悉尼海鞘(Ascidia sydneiensis)、史氏菊海鞘(Botryllus schlosseri)、米氏小叶鞘(Diplosoma listerianum)、柄瘤海鞘(Styela clava)、红贺海鞘(Herdmania momus)等9科29属103种组成,其中在太平洋海域64种、印度洋23种、大西洋44种,而北冰洋海域仅3种;另外,其附着污损具有明显的地域性和季节特点,并与深度有关。今后应加强污损性海鞘的生态调查和分类研究,阐明深海及两极海域附着污损特点,揭示幼虫附着变态过程的分子调控机理,完善幼虫采集培养技术,以期更好地掌握海鞘生物学特性与生态特点,丰富和发展海洋生态学内容,并为海洋污损生物的防除奠定基础,促进海洋经济产业的发展。  相似文献

Rodent seed predation and seedling recruitment in mesic grassland   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Seedling recruitment of two grasses (Arrhenatherum elatius and Festuca rubra) and two herbs (Centaurea nigra and Rumex acetosa) was measured in areas with and without rodents to which seeds of each species were sown at three seed densities (1000, 10,000 and 50,000 seeds m−2) in two seasons (spring and autumn 1995). Seed removal was measured for 10-day periods and the fate of seedlings was followed for 15 months after sowing. The proportion of seed removed ranged from 6 to 85% and increased with increasing seed density for each species. Rodents had no effect on seedling emergence or survival in the spring sowing. In the autumn sowing, rodents reduced seedling emergence of all four species sown at 1000 and 10,000 seeds m−2 but had no impact at 50,000 seeds m−2, presumably because of microsite limitation. We suggest the difference between spring and autumn arose because emergence was seed limited in autumn but microsite limited in spring; microsite availability was higher in autumn because a summer drought killed plants, reduced plant biomass and opened up the sward. Fifteen months after the autumn sowing, fewer A. elatius and C. nigra seedlings survived on plots exposed to rodents. This result reflected not only the reduced seedling emergence but also increased seedling mortality (seedling herbivory) in sites exposed to rodents. In contrast, F. rubra and R.acteosa showed density-dependent seedling survival which compensated for initial differences in seedling emergence, so that no effect of rodents remained after 15 months. The results suggest that rodent seed predation and seedling herbivory exert strong effects on seedling recruitment of A.elatius and C. nigra when recruitment conditions are favourable (conditions that lead to high microsite availability) and may contribute to both species being maintained at low densities in the grassland. The results also demonstrate that highly significant impacts of rodent seed predation at the seedling emergence stage can disappear by the time of plant maturation. In this paper we describe the larval morphology of two species from the ascidian family Pyuridae, Microcosmus exasperatus and Herdmania momus, with special emphasis on components of the cerebral vesicle. Larvae have not previously been described for any species in the large genus Microcosmus. Besides a difference in size (larvae of H. momus are about 40% larger than those of M. exasperatus), larvae of the two species differ primarily in the number and arrangement of sensory structures. Both species possess a well-developed statocyte but only H. momus has an ocellus. The absence of an ocellus in M. exasperatus is unique among pyurid ascidians. An auxiliary vesicle was found situated on the left side of the cerebral vesicle in both species. However, unlike the larvae of H. momus and other pyurid species, there is no apparent communication between the auxiliary and cerebral vesicles of M. exasperatus. Epithelial cells in the auxiliary vesicles of both species carry modified cilia about 2 μm in diameter; auxiliary vesicles of H. momus also have simple cilia with axonemes in a 9 + 0 microtubule configuration. In H. momus the membranes of the epithelial cells are highly convoluted and extend into the lumen of the auxiliary vesicle. Morphological arrangements of auxiliary vesicles and globular cilia reported so far in ascidian tadpoles are contrasted and discussed.  相似文献

It is well known that spiders are present in high numbers in orchards and may contribute to biocontrol. Some recent studies in central Europe further showed that some spiders are active year-round and consume pests even in winter. Using cardboard traps laid every two weeks, we carried out a survey to determine which spider and earwig species are active from September to May in an experimental, pesticide-free, apple orchard under a Mediterranean climate. We observed that spider activity was never completely absent. The structure of the spider communities showed a marked seasonality in three periods (so-called ‘autumn’, ‘winter’ and ‘spring’). Only two spider genera, Philodromus and Trachelas, were highly active in winter (percentage of catches during this season above 40%) and six others (Lathys, Clubiona, Gnaphosa, Theridion, Phrurolithus) had moderate activity (between 20 and 40%). The two earwig species had different patterns of winter activity with Forficula auricularia almost absent whereas F. pubescens was moderately active on trees. Spider community abundance, diversity and evenness significantly decreased between autumn and winter and remained low in the following spring probably because the attractiveness of the traps is much lower at this time of year due to mild temperatures and the presence of leaves on the trees. Winter-active spiders could contribute to pest biocontrol during the cold season and we advocate that the use of broad-spectrum pesticides at the end of winter, as classically applied in orchards, may be counter-productive for pest control.  相似文献

During 2005 monthly samples of the solitary ascidian Herdmania momus were collected along the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts of Israel, in order to investigate possible differences in life history strategies of the two populations. The samples were preserved, dissected, and measurements were made of length, total weight, gonad weight, oocyte diameter and the occurrence of symbionts was recorded. Additionally, field surveys showed that in the Mediterranean H. momus exclusively inhabit artificial substrates, and are common at greater depths than in Eilat (Red Sea). Individuals of H. momus in Eilat reproduced year round. Although individuals from the Mediterranean were significantly larger than individuals collected in Eilat their gonad indices and oocyte diameter measurements indicate that they have a short reproductive season. Copepods were found in 50% of the samples from both sites, while a pontoniine shrimp was found in 14% of the samples from Eilat only. The marked differences between the native vs. non-indigenous populations of H. momus are attributed to differential food availability, water temperature, currents and wave exposure. The increasing evidence of negative effects of non-indigenous ascidians on natural fauna from other regions in the world emphasizes the need for additional research regarding the ecology of ascidians along the coasts of Israel.  相似文献

Two experiments conducted in spring and autumn 1992 examined the effect of mollusc grazing on seedling regeneration from natural grassland seedbanks by creating artificial gaps in plots in a grassland sward. Molluscs were excluded from half the gaps by application of molluscicide. Mollusc grazing in both the spring and autumn experiment significantly reduced seedling recruitment, though the intensity of grazing was greatest in autumn. Recruitment of five species was markedly influenced by molluscicide application. In spring, plots from which molluscs were excluded contained significantly more seedlings of Chenopodium polyspermum and Ranunculus acris. In the autumn, exclusion of molluscs resulted in increased populations of R. acris, Stellaria graminea and Rumex acetosa. Cerastium holosteoides populations were greatest in autumn grazed plots. Other species, notably the grasses Holcus lanatus and Agrostis capillaris and the legume Trifolium repens were unaffected by molluscicide application. Species diversity was significantly decreased by molluscicide application in the autumn. Gap size significantly affected the recruitment of two species. Ranunculus acris populations were significantly higher in small gaps in both spring and summer, while Chenopodium recruitment in the spring was greater in small gaps. Gap size also significantly influenced the risk of mollusc attack on Ranunculus as molluscs appeared to show an aggregative feeding response in the high seedling density small gaps. Selective grazing of vulnerable seedlings by molluscs may influence the eventual relative proportions of the species present and so provide a potent mechanism in shaping community composition in grasslands.  相似文献

Abstract Chemical knockdown procedures were used to sample canopy arthropods at 3 month intervals over 1 year at two sites, one in eastern Australia and the other in western Australia. Samples were taken from narrow-leaved ironbark, Eucalyptus crebra, and grey box, Eucalyptus moluccana, in the east and from jarrah, Eucalyptus marginata, and marri, Eucalyptus calophylla, in the west. Arthropods were more abundant on trees in eastern Australia and exhibited different seasonal patterns from those in the west. Members of different functional groups exhibited different seasonal patterns, with some herbivorous groups responding to times of leaf production, decomposers and fungus feeders responding to high moisture availability, and predators/parasites responding to the abundance of food items. Seasonal variability was slightly higher in the west, possibly reflecting the greater seasonal amplitude in rainfall. In the eastern forest, proportionately more taxa peaked in spring or summer and declined to minimum numbers in winter. In the western forest several taxa attained peak numbers in autumn, winter or spring, while others declined to minimum values in winter or summer. The phenological patterns of canopy arthropods appear to be linked to the condition of the host plant and/or to climatic factors. Comparison of the western Australian data to those from a second year of sampling at a time when rainfall was greater and fell later into the season indicated that variability in arthropod numbers between years can be as great as that between seasons. Implications of the variability in seasonal and annual patterns of canopy invertebrate communities are discussed in relation to the need for long-term sampling and in relation to evaluating the impact of disturbance on forest communities.  相似文献

In the present work we have studied different aspects of the phagocytic process in peripheral blood granulocytes from the turtle Mauremys caspica: (a) tissue adherence capacity, (b) spontaneous mobility and chemotaxis, (c) attachment and ingestion of foreign cells (Candida albicans) or inert particles (latex beads), and (d) capacity to digest ingested material measured by nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction. These studies were carried out in vitro at 37°C in autumn, winter, spring and summer.
  • 2.2. The adherence index showed significantly higher values in autumn, and smaller values in winter. The spontaneous mobility was not affected seasonally, but the chemotaxis was significantly increased in winter and decreased in autumn. The numbers of C. albicans attached and ingested as well as latex beads ingested per 100 granulocytes were higher in autumn and summer, and lower in winter and spring. The digestion capacity was greatly decreased in summer.
  • 3.3. The comparison between the results obtained here and those found using the same techniques in blood human granulocytes showed that these animals are endowed with an adequate phagocytic response.

Reproductive phenology of gorse (Ulex europaeus L., Genisteae, Fabaceae) is unusual in that the onset and duration of flowering vary greatly among individuals within populations: some plants initiate flowering in autumn or winter and continue flowering through spring, others initiate flowering in early spring. To understand the origin of this diversity and its ecological consequences, we investigated flowering phenology of randomly sampled individuals from five different natural populations in Brittany (France). Reproductive success was evaluated for individuals with contrasting flowering patterns, from 16 natural populations. Flower production, pod production, seed production and seed predation were estimated. Plants initiating flowering in spring produced larger numbers of flowers and pods over a shorter period than plants flowering from winter to spring, which produced few flowers and pods at a time but over a longer period. Pod production of long-flowering plants did not differ significantly between winter and spring, but their pods were more intensively attacked by seed predators in spring than in winter. We discuss our results in relation to biotic and abiotic parameters. We postulate that long-flowering can be interpreted as a bet-hedging strategy, spreading the risk of pod failure (rotting or freezing) in winter and of seed predation in spring.  相似文献

The post-fire development of herbaceous understoreys of Tnodia/mallee burnt in different seasons was studied over a 3 year period in south-western New South Wales, Australia. Near Pooncarie, NSW, a 3 year sequence of above-average rainfall immediately following burning in either the spring, autumn or winter resulted in a substantial increase in species richness and herbage dry matter production. Plots burnt in the spring produced significantly more dry matter than either the autumn or the winter-burnt plots but only in the first growing season after burning. Some species such as Haloragis odontocarpa behaved as ephemerals, being abundant in the first post-fire season, particularly after spring fire, before becoming inconspicuous. Short-lived grasses, such as Stipa species, then became relatively abundant except during drought. Other experiments confirmed the potential of fire to increase herbage diversity and productivity when there was adequate rainfall. During drought, post-fire herbage production was low and the dominant perennials, viz. mallee Eucalyptus and Triodia irritans, regenerated at the expense of the herbs. There was a strong negative correlation between combined mallee and Triodia cover and total herbage cover over time. Seedling recruitment of Triodia irritans was significantly higher on plots burnt in the spring at Pooncarie.  相似文献

The aim of the work was to find out how the Redshank which over-winter on the Ythan estuary, Aberdeenshire, adapt their feeding activities to the short daylength in winter. To achieve this, the feeding behaviour and daily routine in winter were compared with those in autumn and spring. Corophium volutator was the main prey on the estuary during the day. However, the temperature of the mud greatly affected the diet in the two areas where the feeding behaviour was studied in detail. At temperatures above 6°C, most of the biomass ingested consisted of Corophium. However, in one study area in one winter, Macoma balthica was taken more frequently at lower than at high temperatures. In the other area, Nereis diversicolor was taken more frequently at low than at high temperatures. These changes in diet appeared related to changes in the behaviour of the prey affecting their availability and not due to the birds changing their preference at low temperatures. The ingestion rate was not affected by the change in diet in the first area but decreased at low temperatures in the second. The sizes of Macoma and Nereis taken by the birds did not vary seasonally. The sizes of Corophium taken decreased in winter as a result of a reduction in the size of those present in the substrate. It was concluded that there was no evidence of Redshank increasing their ingestion rate in winter to compensate for the short daylength. The proportion of the time spent feeding on the estuary in daylight was greater in winter than in spring. Redshank continued feeding at high water in the surrounding fields and on the estuary at night during the winter but not in either autumn or spring. During the winter they obtained less than 50% of their daily food requirements from the estuary in daylight, mainly because of the short daylength. Consequently, they had to collect the balance at night and at high water. Seasonal changes in the numbers of Redshank were recorded. After an autumn decrease in numbers, no decrease in numbers could be detected during the winter. These findings are discussed in relation to the possible difficulties for Redshank in collecting their daily food requirements during the winter. The impact of the birds on their main estuarine prey Corophium is also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Research in Mediterranean‐climate shrublands in both South Africa and Australia shows that recruitment of proteoid shrubs (non‐sprouting, serotinous Proteaceae) is best after warm‐season (summer and autumn) fires and worst after cool‐season (winter and spring) ones. This pattern has been attributed to post‐dispersal seed attrition as well as size of pre‐dispersal seed reserves. Here we investigate patterns of post‐fire recruitment for four proteoid species in the eastern part of South Africa's fynbos biome, which has a bimodal (spring and autumn) rainfall regime. Despite the lack of significant differences in recruitment between cool‐ and warm‐season burns, we find some evidence for favourable recruitment periods following fires in spring and autumn, immediately before, and coinciding with, the bimodal rainfall peaks. This suggests that enhanced recruitment is associated with conditions of high soil moisture immediately after the fire, and that rapid germination may minimize post‐dispersal seed attrition. In two of the species, we also find a shift from peak flowering in winter and spring in the Mediterranean‐climate part of the fynbos biome, to summer and autumn flowering in the eastern part. Because these two species are only weakly serotinous, warm‐season flowering would result in maximal seed banks in spring, which could explain the spring recruitment peak, but not the autumn one. We conclude that eastern recruitment patterns differ significantly from those observed in the western and central parts of the biome, and that fire management protocols for the east, which are currently based on data and experience from the winter‐rainfall fynbos biome, need to be adjusted accordingly. Fire managers in the eastern fynbos biome should be less constrained by requirements to burn within a narrow seasonal range, and should therefore be in a better position to apply the required management burns.  相似文献

The host alternating aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), feeds in summer on several different species of grasses but is monophagous on its winter host, Prunus padus L. The monophagy on P. padus could be a result of the restricted host range of the several different generations colonizing, or feeding, on this host during autumn–winter–spring. This study shows that the winter host plant specificity of R. padi is controlled mainly by the preference of the females remigrating (gynoparae) to the winter host, P. padus, in autumn. The other generations living on the winter host, i.e., sexual females, males, and spring generations, all accept a broader range of winter hosts. One alternative host plant, Prunus spinosa L., could be utilized by all generations associated with the winter host, except for the females remigrating at autumn.  相似文献

Understanding the ecology and evolution of parasites is contingent on identifying the selection pressures they face across their infection landscape. Such a task is made challenging by the fact that these pressures will likely vary across time and space, as a result of seasonal and geographical differences in host susceptibility or transmission opportunities. Avian haemosporidian blood parasites are capable of infecting multiple co‐occurring hosts within their ranges, yet whether their distribution across time and space varies similarly in their different host species remains unclear. Here, we applied a new PCR method to detect avian haemosporidia (genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Plasmodium) and to determine parasite prevalence in two closely related and co‐occurring host species, blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus, N = 529) and great tits (Parus major, N = 443). Our samples were collected between autumn and spring, along an elevational gradient in the French Pyrenees and over a three‐year period. Most parasites were found to infect both host species, and while these generalist parasites displayed similar elevational patterns of prevalence in the two host species, this was not always the case for seasonal prevalence patterns. For example, Leucocytozoon group A parasites showed inverse seasonal prevalence when comparing between the two host species, being highest in winter and spring in blue tits but higher in autumn in great tits. While Plasmodium relictum prevalence was overall lower in spring relative to winter or autumn in both species, spring prevalence was also lower in blue tits than in great tits. Together, these results reveal how generalist parasites can exhibit host‐specific epidemiology, which is likely to complicate predictions of host–parasite co‐evolution.  相似文献

Factors affecting the light response of the riparian species Bembidion petrosum (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were studied with various experimental designs in laboratory and in field. B. petrosum, which lives in open gravely/stony sites, oriented towards directed light at higher temperatures (above 15.0°C). This positive phototaxis was replaced by an orientation towards a dark silhouette (screen) at low temperatures. The orientation towards silhouettes is mainly a simple type of form vision, although a fraction of the individuals seems to exhibit a negative phototaxis. In experiments with a dark zone and a zone with directed light, individuals of B. petrosum mainly selected the dark zone. However, if two stones were placed in the light part of the arena, individuals tended to hide under them. This applied independent of light intensity and whether a tuft of grass was present or absent in the dark part of the arena. The experiments indicate that the shift of the species between the reproduction (spring/summer) and hibernation (autumn/winter) habitat involves a change from an orientation towards silhouettes at low temperatures in autumn to an orientation towards directed light at higher temperatures in spring. This is combined with a specialized low thigmokinesis (preference of heavy and rough objects) and lower moisture requirements of the species in autumn/winter than in spring/summer.  相似文献

In this study, we describe the female reproductive cycle of Philodryas patagoniensis in south Brazil, which was described through morpho‐anatomical and histological analyses. The peak of secondary vitellogenesis occurred during winter–spring (July–December), ovulation in spring (October–December), mating and fertilization in spring–summer (October–February), oviposition in spring–autumn (October–May) and births from late spring to autumn (December–July). The diameter of vitellogenic follicles/eggs was larger in winter–spring than in other seasons. The diameter of the shell glands was also larger in winter–spring. In spite of the clear reproductive peak, gonads only showed reduced activity in the autumn. Therefore, at the individual level, females have a discontinuous cyclical reproduction; in the populational level, the reproductive cycle is seasonal semisynchronous. We support the hypothesis that P. patagoniensis have the ability to produce multiple clutches with long‐term stored sperm. Sexual dimorphism in body size was evident, and females are significantly larger and heavier than males. Larger females were able to produce follicles and eggs in larger amount and size. The maternal body size was positively related to the reproductive effort and fecundity. To conclude, we deliberated about the proximal and distal causes that influence the reproductive traits and patterns of P. patagoniensis.  相似文献

1. The aphid Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum Olive, which is specialised to the tall goldenrod, Solidago altissima L., in its native range, has become a dominant species on the introduced tall goldenrod in Japan. How this exotic aphid influenced arthropod communities on the introduced tall goldenrod in aphid‐present (spring) and aphid‐absent (autumn) seasons was examined, using an aphid removal experiment. 2. In spring, aphid presence increased ant abundance because aphid honeydew attracted foraging ant workers. A significant negative correlation was found between the numbers of ants and herbivorous insects other than aphids on the aphid‐exposed plants, but no significant correlation was detected on the aphid‐free plants. Thus, the aphid presence was likely to decrease the abundance of co‐occurring herbivorous insects through removal behaviour of the aphid‐tending ants. There were no significant differences in plant traits between the aphid‐exposed and aphid‐free plants. 3. In autumn, the numbers of lateral shoots and leaves, and the leaf nitrogen content were increased in response to the aphid infestation in spring. Because of the improvement of plant traits by aphid feeding, the abundance of leaf chewers increased on aphid‐exposed plants. In contrast, the abundance of sap feeders decreased on the aphid‐exposed plants. In particular, the dominant scale insect among sap feeders, Parasaissetia nigra Nietner, decreased, followed by a decrease in the abundance of ants attending P. nigra. Thus, aphid feeding may have attenuated the negative impacts of the tending ants on leaf chewers. 4. Aphid presence did not change herbivore species richness but changed the relative density of dominant herbivores, resulting in community‐wide effects on co‐occurring herbivores through ant‐mediated indirect effects, and on temporally separated herbivores through plant‐ and ant‐mediated indirect effects. The aphid also altered predator community composition by increasing and decreasing the relative abundance of aphid‐tending ants in the spring and autumn, respectively.  相似文献

为探究局地尺度下近岸岛礁海域之多变水体环境、极高空间异质性对生物群落的影响,于2020—2021年4个季度在大陈岛礁海域底拖网采样,利用等级聚类(cluster)、非度量多维标度(NMDS)等多元统计方法分析甲壳类群落结构的时空格局,并整合温度、盐度、深度等环境因子进行冗余分析(RDA)以解析影响因素,同时利用丰度生物量曲线(ABC)及W统计量评估群落稳态。结果显示:全年共采集甲壳类53种,隶属2目13科29属,虾类占总种类数的56.60%,种类数秋季(43种)>冬季(41种)>春季(31种)>夏季(26种)。优势种的季节更替明显,夏秋季以哈氏仿对虾(Parapenaeopsis hardwickii)、中华管鞭虾(Solenocera crassicornis)和三疣梭子蟹(Portunus trituberculatus)为代表的中大型经济种为主,冬春季则以双斑蟳(Charybdis bimaculata)和细巧仿对虾(Parapenaeopsis tenella)为代表的小个体饵料种为主,口虾蛄(Oratosquilla oratotria)在各个季节皆为优势种...  相似文献

Exapion ulicis (Forster) and Exapion lemovicinum (Hoffmann) (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea: Apionidae) are seed predators of the three gorse species occurring in Brittany (France): Ulex europaeus L., Ulex gallii Planch., and Ulex minor Roth.(Fabaceae). Host‐plant phenology plays a major role in the relationship between apionid weevils and their gorse species, because larvae develop within gorse pods and adults have to wait for pod dehiscence to be released. We monitored flowering and fruiting phenology of gorse species, weevil reproductive behaviour, and egg‐laying patterns in six natural populations in the native area of these gorse species. At each site, U. europaeus, which flowers mainly in spring, was sympatric with one of two autumn flowering gorse species, U. gallii and U. minor. We noticed that E. ulicis laid eggs in spring and was restricted to U. europaeus whereas E. lemovicinum laid eggs in autumn and was restricted to the two autumn‐flowering species U. gallii and U. minor. Therefore, host specificity depended on gorse phenology, and not on geographic proximity. In addition, the infested pod content showed that E. ulicis laid several eggs per pod and suggested that females chose pods with the highest numbers of seeds. In contrast, E. lemovicinum laid a single egg per pod and showed no preference for pods with many seeds.
