Two populations of a diatom alga Thallassiosira weisflogii were grown at photon flux densities (PFD) of 0.8 and 8 μmol/(m2 s). For both diatom populations, the recovery of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (F 0, F m, F v/F m, and NPQ) was monitored after nondestructive irradiation by visible light at PFD of 40 μmol/(m2 s) and after high-intensity irradiation by visible light (1000–4000 μmol/(m2 s)). The exposure of diatoms to PFD of 40 μmol/(m2 s)—higher than PFD used for algal growth but still nondamaging to photosynthetic apparatus—induced nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), which was stronger in algae grown at higher PFD (8 μmol/(m2 s)) than in algae grown at low light. After irradiation with high-intensity light, the recovery of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters was more pronounced in algae grown at elevated PFD level. During short-term irradiation of diatoms with high-intensity visible light (1000 μmol/(m2 s)), a stronger NPQ was observed in the culture adapted to high irradiance. After the treatment of algae with dithiothreitol (an inhibitor of carotenoid deepoxidase in the diadinoxanthin cycle) or NH4Cl (an agent abolishing the proton gradient at thylakoid membranes), a short exposure of algae to PFD of 40 μmol/(m2 s) induced hardly any nonphotochemical quenching. The results indicate the dominant contribution of xanthophyll cycle carotenoids to energy-dependent quenching.  相似文献

Seasonally changing photophysiological and biochemical characteristics of sea ice microalgae are interpreted with respect to light availability and measurements of nutrient concentration made at high vertical resolution (12.5 cm) during a dense bloom in the platelet ice layer of McMurdo Sound during a 6-week study in austral spring of 1989. Platelet ice algae remained highly shade adapted throughout the spring as shown by their low photoadaptive index (Ek, 3.7–8.4 μmol photons·m−2·s−1), low mean specific absorption coefficient (<0.009 m2 mg−1 Chl a), high optical cross-sectional area of photosystem II (σPSII, 3.0–8.2), and high molar ratio of fucoxanthin:chlorophyll a (mean = 1.62 ± 0.15 SD). Between 24 October and 8 November, the algae exhibited a photoacclimative response that was marked by a 30% decrease in photosynthetic efficiency (αB), a 75% decrease in maximum photosynthetic rate (PB/m), and a 60% increase in σPSII. The photochemical conversion efficiency at photosystem II (Fv/Fm= ca. 0.5) and the quantum yield of photosynthesis (ØC= 0.062– 0.078 mol C mol−1 photons) were ca. 80% of their maximal values. After 8 November, changes in algal photophysiology and biochemistry, which were inconsistent with a photoacclimation response, suggest that the platelet ice algae near the platelet/congelation ice interface became increasingly nutrient limited. The number of pennate diatoms increased threefold to 150 × 109 cells m−3 between 8 and 14 November, then remained unchanged throughout the remainder of the field season. Following the increase in cell number, Fv/Fm, ØC, and C:Chla decreased by >40%, σPSII increased by 70%; and the biochemical ratios C:N and C:Si increased 25%–30%. Nutrient depletion was apparent from the high-resolution vertical profiles, but nutrient concentrations limiting algal growth were not observed. However, nutrient concentrations at the likely site of nutrient limitation near the platelet/congelation ice interface were not measured, indicating that higher resolution sampling is necessary to fully characterize this highly variable habitat.  相似文献

As a result of ozone depletion, ground doses of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in the mid latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere have increased since the 1980s, and current predictions indicate no possible alleviation until at least post 2020. Mudflats and sandflats are important coastal-zone habitats, and support extensive biofilms of benthic microalgae (microphytobenthos). In intertidal situations, these assemblages are exposed to high levels of UVB radiation during periods of tidal exposure. Exposure of intertidal biofilms dominated by epipelic (mud-inhabiting) diatoms to 0, 0.18 or 0.35 W m−2 UVB radiation for between 4 and 10 days resulted in no significant decreases in the maximum PSII quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) throughout diel exposure periods. Although the quantum efficiency of electron transport (Fq′/Fm′) showed significant reductions early in some experiments, the major response was an increase in Fq′/Fm′ in UVB exposed biofilms. This increase in Fq′/Fm′ was suggestive of a protective vertical migration down into the sediment. Single-cell and whole biofilm fluorescence imaging demonstrated, for the first time, that motile diatoms are able to detect UVB radiation independently of UVA or photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and migrate rapidly down (within 15 min) into the sediments to avoid it. This behavioural acclimation mechanism appears to prevent significant accumulation of UVB induced damage to the algae. UVB exposure had no significant effect of biofilm photosynthesis (measured by 14C carbon fixation), but did alter organic carbon allocation patterns, with significantly less new carbon allocated to intracellular storage (glucan) and extracellular colloidal carbohydrate fractions. Significant reductions in the sediment standing stocks of chlorophyll a (Chl a), colloidal carbohydrates, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were seen after 7 days of UVB exposure. This study showed that marine intertidal benthic diatoms use a behavioural strategy to avoid exposure to UVB and that this response is effective as a short-term protection mechanism against UVB damage. However, altered carbon allocation patterns feed forward over time into changes in biofilm biomass and sediment carbohydrate dynamics. This suggests that continual long-term exposure to UVB may impact on sediment carbon cycling and trophic interactions and on the stabilization of sediments by microalgal biofilms through their production of extracellular carbohydrates.  相似文献

Culture experiments were conducted on ten phytoplankton species to examine their biological and physiological responses during exposure to oil and a combination of oil and dispersant. The species tested included a range of taxa typically found in the Gulf of Mexico such as cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, and diatoms. Cultures were exposed to Macondo surrogate oil using the water accommodated fraction (WAF), and dispersed oil using a chemically enhanced WAF (CEWAF) and diluted CEWAF, to replicate conditions following the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A range of responses were observed, that could broadly class the algae as either “robust” or “sensitive” to oil and/or dispersant exposure. Robust algae were identified as Synechococcus elongatus, Dunaliella tertiolecta, two pennate diatoms Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Navicula sp., and Skeletonema grethae CCMP775, and were largely unaffected by any of the treatments (no changes to growth rate or time spent in lag phase relative to controls). The rest of the phytoplankton, all centric diatoms, exhibited at least some combination of reduced growth rates or increased lag time in response to oil and/or dispersant exposure. Photophysiology did not have a strong treatment effect, with significant inhibition of photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) only observed in the CEWAF, if at all. We found that the effects of oil and dispersants on phytoplankton physiology were species‐dependent, and not always detrimental. This has significant implications on how oil spills might impact phytoplankton community structure and bloom dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico, which in turn impacts higher trophic levels.  相似文献

The use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to extract chlorophyll a and l4C-labelled photosynthate from endolithic algae of sparsely vegetated, cold temperate grasslands on the Colorado Plateau in Arizona has yielded the first estimates of biomass and photosynthesis for this unusual community. These subsurface microorganisms are found widespread in exposed Coconino Sandstone, a predominant formation in this cold temperate region. The endolithic community in Coconino Sandstone, composed primarily of coccoid blue-green and coccoid/sarcinoid green algae, yielded a biomass value (as chlorophyll a content) of 87 mg m-2 rock surface area and a photosynthetic rate of 0.37 mg CO2 dm 2 hr-1 or 0.48 mg CO2 mg-1 chl a hr-1. The endolithic algal community contributes moderate biomass (5–10%) and substantial photosynthesis (20–80%) to the sparse grassland ecosystem.  相似文献

  • 1 Phytoplankton species composition, numerical abundance, spatial distribution and total biomass measured as chlorophyll a concentration were studied in relation to environmental factors in September 1994 (dry season) and March 1995 (rainy season), respectively, in the Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria; 103 species were recorded.
  • 2 Blue‐green algae (Cyanophyceae) were most diverse, followed by diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), green algae (Chlorophyceae) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae).
  • 3 Twinspan separated the phytoplankton communities in the Nyanza Gulf and those in the open lake during both seasons. During the dry season, the Nyanza Gulf was strongly dominated by blue‐greens, while diatoms dominated in the open lake. During the rainy season, blue‐greens remained dominant in the Nyanza Gulf although the number of species found was lower than during the dry season; in the open lake, blue‐greens replaced diatoms as the dominant group and there were more species than in the dry season.
  • 4 Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the phytoplankton species distribution was significantly correlated with turbidity during the dry season and with SiO2 during the rainy season. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranging from 2.0 to 71.5 mg m‐3 in the dry season and 2.0–17.2 mg m‐3 in the rainy season confirm earlier reports of increasing phytoplankton biomass in Lake Victoria since the 1960s.

Nuisance biomass levels of periphytic algae in streams   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Relative coverage of filamentous periphytic algae increased with chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass on natural substrata in 22 northwestern United States and Swedish streams. A biomass range of 100–150 mg chl a m−2 may represent a critical level for an aesthetic nuisance; below those levels, filamentous coverage was less than 20%. Other indices of water quality (dissolved oxygen content and measures of benthic macroinvertebrate diversity) were apparently unaffected by periphytic biomass or filamentous coverage in these streams. Neither was biomass related to limiting nutrient content (soluble reactive phosphorus, SRP), as has been observed in previous experiments using bare rocks in streams and slides in artificial channels. Ambient SRP concentration may not be a useful predicter of periphyton accrual on natural substrates, due to uptake and recycling of P throughout the stream and undetermined losses such as sloughing and grazing.  相似文献

The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II was estimated from variable chlorophyll a fluorescence in samples of phytoplankton collected from the Taihu Lake in China to determine the responses of different phytoplankters to irradiance and vertical mixing. Meteorological and environmental variables were also monitored synchronously. The maximum quantum yield of three phytoplankton groups: cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, and diatoms/dinoflagellates, showed a similar diurnal change pattern. F v/F m decreased with a significant depth-dependent variation as irradiance increased during the morning and increased as irradiance declined in the afternoon. Furthermore, the rates of F v/F m depression were dependent upon the photon flux density, whereas the rates of recovery of F v/F m were dependent upon the historical photon density. Moreover, photoinhibition affected the instantaneous growth rates of phytoplankton. Although at noon cyanobacteria had a higher photoinhibition value (up to 41%) than chlorophytes (32%) and diatoms/dinoflagellates (34%) at the surface, no significant difference in diurnal growth rates among the three phytoplankton groups were observed indicating that cyanobacteria could photoacclimate better than chlorophytes and diatoms/dinoflagellates. In addition, cyanobacteria had a higher nonphotochemical quenching value than chlorophytes and diatoms/dinoflagellates at the surface at noon, which indicated that cyanobacteria were better at dissipating excess energy. The ratios of enclosed bottle samples F v/F m to free lake samples F v/F m showed different responses for the three phytoplankton groups to irradiance and vertical mixing when wind speed was approximately constant at about 3.0 m s−1. When wind speed was lower than 3.0 m s−1, cyanobacteria accumulated mainly at the surface and 0.3 m, because of their positive buoyancy, where diurnal growth rates of phytoplankton were relatively higher than those at 0.6 m and 0.9 m. Chlorophytes were homogenized completely by vertical mixing, while diatoms/dinoflagellates avoided active high irradiance by moving downward at noon, and then upward again when irradiance decreased. These results explain the dominance of cyanobacteria in Taihu Lake. Handling editor: L. Naselli-Flores  相似文献

Seasonal distribution and community succession of macrofoulants were studied using concrete panels in the coastal waters of Kalpakkam, east coast of India, for a period of two years. The panels were suspended at 1 m, 4 m and 7 m depths and categorised into short-term and long-term exposures. A high total of 105 fouling taxa were recorded. The major fouling organisms observed were hydroids, barnacles, mussels, anthozoans and ascidians. Considerable faunistic and biomass variations were noticed both with respect to season and depth. The month of panel exposure had a significant influence on the succession of fouling communities. On the short-term panels, the maximum fouling biomass was 64 kg m–2 in 30 days at 4 m depth, whereas on the long-term panels, it was 250 kg m–2 after 216 days at 4 m depth. A comparison with the biomass values reported from elsewhere shows that biomass build-up in Kalpakkam coastal waters is one of the highest ever reported. Such a very high biomass accumulation is due to the extremely dense settlement of mussels, especially the green mussel,Perna viridis (L).  相似文献

Understanding the dynamics of upwelling systems, especially the interactions between nutrients and light, has benefited from the application of models of varying complexity. Validation of such models using unialgal cultures or field observations has often proven difficult, but short-term incubations of contained natural assemblages and use of instantaneous physiological indicators offer an alternative approach. In May and June 1996, phytoplankton communities deep in the euphotic zone were sampled from nearly identical physical environments. Replicate samples (20 l volume) were incubated on deck at 50% surface irradiance with either no nutrient additions (Controls) or additions of 20 μM nitrate (Enrichments). Over 24 h, variable fluorescence (F v:F m), nitrate reductase activity (NR), nutrients, chlorophyll a and particulate C and N were monitored. Initial chlorophyll a (~3 μg l?1), phosphate (~0.2 μM), nitrate (~1.5 μM) and silicate (~3 μM) were similar in both months. Changes in NR and F v:F m indicated clear physiological responses to changes in irradiance and added nitrate that differed between months. In May, Controls and Enrichments responded in the same way. F v:F m stayed constant (0.5), chlorophyll a increased slightly, and NR activity increased markedly in all samples. In contrast, in June, treatments responded quite differently. F v:F m was near the theoretical maximum (0.7–0.8) initially and remained constant in Enrichments, but fell sharply in Controls. Declines in controls were also seen for chlorophyll a, and NR activity. Thus, the addition of 20 μM nitrate had a significant effect even though ambient levels of nitrate (>1 μM) should not have been limiting. Small (<20 μm) flagellates predominated in the May samples, but in June large and chain-forming centric diatoms constituted a significant proportion of the phytoplankton community. We conclude that the response of a phytoplankton community to environmental changes can depend on factors that are poorly represented by bulk measurements of chlorophyll, nutrients and particulate elements.  相似文献

Early stages of biofilm succession in a lentic freshwater environment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Initial events of biofilms development and succession were studied in a freshwater environment at Kalpakkam, East Coast of India. Biofilms were developed by suspending Perspex (Plexiglass) panels for 15 days at bimonthly intervals from January 1996 to January 1997. Changes in biofilm thickness, biomass, algal density, chlorophyll a concentration and species composition were monitored. The biofilm thickness, biomass, algal density and chlorophyll a concentration increased with biofilms age and colonization was greater during summer (March, May and July) than other months. The initial colonization was mainly composed of Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorococcum humicolo (green algae), Achnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis scutellum, C. placentula (diatoms) and Chroococcus minutus (cyanobacteria) followed by colonial green algae such as Pediastrum tetras, P. boryanumand Coleochaete scutata, cyanobacteria (Gloeocapsa nigrescens), low profile diatoms (Amphora coffeaeformis, Nitzschia amphibia, and Gomphonema parvulum) and long stalked diatoms (Gomphoneis olivaceumand Gomphonema lanceolatum). After the 10th day, the community consisted of filamentous green algae (Klebshormidium subtile, Oedogonium sp., Stigeoclonium tenue and Ulothrix zonata) and cyanobacteria (Calothrix elenkinii, Oscillatoria tenuis and Phormidium tenue). Based on the percentage composition of different groups in the biofilm, three phases of succession could be identified: the first phase was dominated by green algae, the second by diatoms and the third phase by cyanobacteria. Seasonal variation in species composition was observed but the sequence of colonization was similar throughout the study period.  相似文献

The snow cover of Arctic sea ice has recently decreased, and climate models forecast that this will continue and even increase in future. We therefore tested the effect of snow cover on the optical properties of sea ice and the biomass, photobiology, and species composition of sea ice algae at Kangerlussuaq, West Greenland, during March 2011, using a snow-clearance experiment. Sea ice algae in areas cleared of snow was compared with control areas, using imaging variable fluorescence of photosystem II in intact, unthawed ice sections. The study coincided with the onset of spring growth of ice algae, mainly an increase in two pennate diatoms (Achnanthes taeniata and Navicula directa), as temperature increased and ice thickness and brine volume stabilized. The increase in biomass was accompanied by an increase in minimum variable fluorescence (F o) and the maximum quantum yield of PSII (F v /F m) and filling of brine channels with fluorescing cells. In contrast, in the minus snow area, PAR transmittance increased sixfold and there was an exponential decrease in chl-a and no increase in F o, and the area of fluorescing biomass declined to become undetectable. This study suggests that the onset of the spring bloom is predominantly due to temperature effects on brine channel volume, and that the algal decline after snow removal was primarily due to emigration rather than photodamage.  相似文献

Biomass assessments of algae in wetlands usually include only the phytoplankton community without considering the contribution of other algal associations to total algal biomass. This omission prevents an accurate evaluation of the phytoplankton community as an integral part of the total ecosystem. In the present work, the biomass contributions (expressed as chlorophyll-a content per m2 of lake) of phytoplankton, epiphyton on both submerged and emergent macrophytes, and epipelon were measured in Lacombe Lake, Argentina, for the purpose of (1) establishing the relative importance of the phytoplankton and (2) evaluating the entire contribution of algal biomass within the context of the Goldsborough & Robinson conceptual model. Our sampling was carried out monthly for a year in sites representative of different conditions with respect to water depth and type of macrophytes. Physicochemical analyses of water were performed following standard methods. Plankton was collected in a five-level profile at deeper stations and in subsurface samples at the shallow one. Samples of sediment obtained with corers were collected for epipelon sampling and segments of plants were cut at different levels, so as to obtain the epiphytes by scraping. Pigment was extracted with aqueous acetone and calculations were made by means of the Lorenzen equation. According to the Goldsborough & Robinson model, a Lake State developed here during the winter (phytoplankton maxima: 150 mg chlorophyll-a per m2). Then, through the subsequent growth of the submerged macrophytes, an Open State was observed, characterized by a maximum epiphyton biomass (at 3,502 mg chlorophyll-a per m2) along with lower levels of phytoplankton biomass. The epiphytic algae on the emergent macrophytes were always present but attained only relatively low biomass values (maximum: 120 mg of chlorophyll-a per m2 in February). The epipelon biomass varied between 50 and 252 mg chlorophyll-a per m2, registering a considerable contribution of settled algae from the water column (phytoplankton). This study contributes to our knowledge of wetland dynamics through its assessment of the rapid changes in the relative contributions of both planktonic and attached algae to the total algal biomass within the context of specific environmental factors. Abstract

The aim of this study was to quantify algal colonisation on anthropogenic surfaces (viz. building facades and roof tiles) using chlorophyll a (chl a) as a specific biomarker. Chl a was estimated as the initial fluorescence F0 of ‘dark adapted’ algae using a pulse-modulated fluorometer (PAM-2000). Four isolates of aeroterrestrial green algae and one aquatic isolate were included in this study. The chl a concentration and F0 showed an exponential relationship in the tested range between 0 and 400 mg chl a m?2. The relationship was linear at chl a concentrations <20 mg m?2. Exponential and linear models are presented for the single isolates with large coefficients of determination (exponential: r2 > 0.94, linear: r2 > 0.92). The specific power of this fluorometric method is the detection of initial algal colonisation on surfaces in thin or young biofilms down to 3.5 mg chl a m?2, which corresponds to an abundances of the investigated isolates between 0.2 and 1.5 million cells cm?2.  相似文献

Soil respiration (heterotropic and autotropic respiration, Rg) and aboveground litter fall carbon were measured at three forests at different succession (early, middle and advanced) stages in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, Southern China. It was found that the soil respiration increases exponentially with soil temperature at 5 cm depth (Ts) according to the relation Rg=a exp(bTs), and the more advanced forest community during succession has a higher value of a because of higher litter carbon input than the forests at early or middle succession stages. It was also found that the monthly soil respiration is linearly correlated with the aboveground litter carbon input of the previous month. Using measurements of aboveground litter and soil respiration, the net primary productions (NPPs) of three forests were estimated using nonlinear inversion. They are 475, 678 and 1148 g C m?2 yr?1 for the Masson pine forest (MPF), coniferous and broad‐leaf mixed forest (MF) and subtropical monsoon evergreen broad‐leaf forest (MEBF), respectively, in year 2003/2004, of which 54%, 37% and 62% are belowground NPP for those three respective forests if no change in live plant biomass is assumed. After taking account of the decrease in live plant biomass, we estimated the NPP of the subtropical MEBF is 970 g C m?2 yr?1 in year 2003/2004. Total amount of carbon allocated below ground for plant roots is 388 g C m?2 yr?1 for the MPF, 504 g C m?2 yr?1 for the coniferous and broad‐leaf MF and 1254 g C m?2 yr?1 for the subtropical MEBF in 2003/2004. Our results support the hypothesis that the amount of carbon allocation belowground increases during forest succession.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Research was performed in laboratory streams to evaluate periphytic biomass accrual, export, and community composition over a range of limiting nutrient (phosphorus) concentrations with variable velocity, and suspended sediment addition, in comparison to constant velocity and no suspended sediment. In fixed-velocity treatments, velocity increase to 60 cm s?1 significantly enhanced biomass accrual, but further increase resulted in substantial biomass reduction. Average biomass loss rates did not change significantly over a velocity range of 10–80 cm s?1. Diatoms were favoured at relatively high velocities and low phosphorus concentrations, whereas the blue-green Phormidium tended to dominate at higher SRP concentrations and the green Mougeotia seemed to prefer lower velocities.
  • 2 Sudden increases in velocity raised instantaneous loss rates by an order of magnitude or more, but these high rates persisted only briefly. As a result, marked biomass reductions were not apparent a day after the velocity change. Dominance change from filamentous green or blue-green to diatoms immediately after the increase was reversed within 2 days. Loss rate increases due to solids addition were much smaller than those accompanying velocity increase, but simultaneous velocity elevation and solids addition produced instantaneous loss rates approximately double those with velocity increase alone.
  • 3 The experiments demonstrated that an elevation in velocity, above that to which algae were accustomed, led to increased loss rates and temporarily reduced biomass. However, recolonization and growth after biomass reduction were apparently rapid. Substantial export of periphyton following solids addition required erosion of the protective boundary layer accompanied by a velocity increase. These results arc applicable to understanding the response of lotic periphytic algae to elevated, turbid storm discharges and similar runoff or high-flow events.
  • 4 Areal uptake rates of P by algae growing in the laboratory streams increased with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration, up to approximately 15 μg I?1 in overlying water. They also increased above 35 cm s ?1. Overall, uptake rate seemed to vary inversely with biomass. The ralio of areal uptake rate/biomass was significantly less where mean biomass was 411±6 mg chl a m?2 compared to 223±17 mg chl a m?2.
  • 5 The results suggested that although nutrient uptake is primarily a surface phenomenon, diffusion to interior cells can also determine the responses of attached communities. Both diffusion and uptake rate were stimulated by increasing nutrient concentration and velocity up to certain levels, but became limited by biofilm thickness and scouring.

Summary The measurement of Chl a, Chl b and Chl c contents in four size fractions (Nuclepore filters of 10 m, 3m, 1 m and 0.2 m pore-size) together with microscopic examination illustrate the structure and the relative importance of the micro-, nano and pico-phytoplankton in the production system in the Weddell/Scotia Confluence area. In the Scotia Sea, large diatoms were prevalent and their biomass increased during the six week cruise period, exceeding 1 mg Chl a m–3 at the beginning of January. In contrast, in the Marginal Ice Zone of the Weddell Sea, the biomass remained low, up to 0.3 mg Chl a m–3. A diversified nanoplankton community accounted for more than 90% of this biomass: small diatoms, naked dinoflagellates, cryptophyceans, prymnesiophytes and green flagellates which increased the Chl b/Chl a ratio to values >0.20. An important trend affected the Confluence area, where a high biomass net-plankton community (4 mg Chl a m–3) rapidly changed towards a uniform nanoplankton system of the same kind as in the Weddell Sea. At times, autotrophic cryptophyceans were almost dominating (>4.106 cells/l), with a biomass up to 2 mg Chl a m–3 and a low phaeopytin ratio (<10%). This situation probably arises because of a grazing pressure by krill. However, due to the geographic and oceanographic peculiarities of this area, it is not possible to extrapolate these observations concerning the size structure of the primary producers to the Southern Ocean in general.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Seasonal succession of the phytoplankton in the upper Mississippi River   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Species composition and seasonal succession of the phytoplankton were investigated on the upper Mississippi River at Prairie Island, Minnesota, U.S.A. Both the numbers and volume of individual species were enumerated based on cell counts with an inverted microscope. A succession similar to algal succession in the local lakes occurred. The diatoms were dominant during the spring and fall and blue-green algae were dominant during the summer. The algal concentrations have increased up to 40 fold the concentrations of the 1920's, since the installation of locks and dams. The maximum freshweight standing crop was 4 mg · l–1 in 1928 (Reinhard 1931), 13 mg · l–1 in 1975 a wet year, and 47 mg · l–1 in 1976, a relatively dry year with minimal current discharge. The diatoms varied from 36–99%, the blue-green algae from 0–44% and the cryptómonads from 0–50% of the total standing crop. The green algae were always present but never above 21% of the biomass. The dominant diatoms in recent years were centric -Stephanodiscus andCyclotella spp. (maximum 50,000 ml–1). The dominant blue-green algae wereAphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfsex Born.et Flahault andOscillatoria agardhii Gomont (maximum 800 ml–1). These algal species are also present in local lakes. Shannon diversity values indicated greatest diversity of algae during the summer months.  相似文献

The resistance of stream periphyton to structural disturbance by increases in shear stress (simulating a spate) was investigated in a laboratory flow tank. We monitored loss of biomass from a filamentous community (dominated by Melosira varians) under four different levels of shear stress. In each case, any loss that was going to occur did so within 10 min for this community. In a second experiment, we tested the resistance of four different communities (two dominated by nonfilamentous diatoms and two dominated by filamentous green algae/diatoms) to increases in shear stress. Nine different levels of shear stress were used, ranging from 1- to 70-fold higher than the conditions to which the communities were acclimated. All communities were 14 days old, but some differences in initial biomass occurred that influenced the degree of resistance independently of species composition. Overall, the nonfilamentous diatom communities were the most resistant, and the filamentous communities were the least resistant. The kinetics of the sloughing process varied among community types, with a community dominated by Melosira varians/Gom-phonema parvulum losing 50% of its biomass with only a 3-fold increase in shear stress. In contrast, a community dominated by the nonfilamentous diatoms Fragilaria vaucheriae/Cymbella minuta lost <50% of its biomass after a 70-fold increase in shear stress. Shear stresses required for 50% loss of biomass for the different communities were as follows: 3.6 Newtons.m?2 for the Melosira varians/Gomphonema parvulum community, 10.0 N.m?2 for the Spirogyra sp./Gomphoneis her-culeana/Ulothrix zonata community, 50.6 N.m?2 for the Fragilaria construens/Cymbella minuta/Ach-nanthes minutissima community, and >90.0 N.m?2for the Fragilaria vaucheriae/Cymbella minuta community. These results show that spates without bedload movement can potentially have widely differing disturbance effects on periphyton loss among streams depending on the initial taxonomic composition of resident communities. These results have important implications for stream ecosystem analysis and modeling.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of epilithic algae in a third order pristine forest stream were analyzed over a period of 2 years. Stream water was slightly acidic and nutrient poor. Encrusting, filamentous flocs, and filaments were found. Algal standing crop was high (mean concentration of Chl a 16–43 mg m–2) in spring. Filamentous algae contributed most to standing crop. Diatoms made up over 85% by number of the epilithon. Blue-greens were abundant upstream, and chlorophytes downstream. This shift was ascribed to greater light availability downstream. The community was more diverse during spring. Water current was the most important variable regulating epilithon structure. Total phosphorus (TP), orthophosphate (O-PO inf4 su3– ), silica (Si4+), nitrate (NO inf3 su– ) and conductance correlated negatively with flow rate. Green algae showed a positive correlation to phosphorus during low and stable flow. During rapid runoff, diatoms were the most resistant forms. Seasonal change in the epilithic community was mainly regulated by fluctuations in flow rate.  相似文献
