Abstract: Intraguild predation between female erigonid spiders [Erigone atra (Blackwall) and Oedothorax apicatus (Blackwall), Araneae, Erigonidae] and lacewing larvae (second instar larvae of Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens), Neuropt., Chrysopidae) and interaction effects of predator combinations on cereal aphids were investigated in a microcosm system under laboratory conditions. The microcosm experiments were run for 7 days and consisted of 15wheat seedlings, 15 Sitobion avenae (F) (Hom., Aphididae) as start population, plus a female spider or a lacewing larva or a combination of a spider plus a lacewing larva. The mortality rate of lacewing larvae was significantly increased by 44 and 31% due to intraguild predation by female spiders of E. atra and O. apicatus in comparison with lacewing larvae that were kept alone. The final aphid numbers in the microcosms were significantly reduced by all single predator treatments (spiders, lacewing larvae) and the predator combinations in comparison with controls without predators. The predation effect on aphid populations due to both spider species was similar and not statistically different. An additive effect of the predator combinations ‘spider plus surviving lacewing larva’ was found for both spider species resulting in reduced aphid numbers compared with the single predator treatments. When the lacewing larva was killed by an E. atra female the effects on aphids were non‐additive, but aphid numbers were not statistically increased compared with the lacewing larva treatment. When the lacewing larva was killed by an O. apicatus female, the effects of spider and C. carnea larva were additive on aphid numbers. In the presence of additional prey (fruit flies and Collembola) intraguild predation was not found and E. atra females had no significant effect on the survival of lacewing larvae. In addition, E. atra females had no significant effect on aphid numbers in the presence of fruit flies and Collembola, but in combination with a lacewing larva that survived, a significantly greater reduction of the aphid population was observed compared with the lacewing larva treatment. The body mass of lacewing larvae at the end of the experiment was not statistically influenced by the presence or absence of an E. atra female.  相似文献

The developmental interaction between the egg/larval parasitoid,Ascogaster reticulatus Watanabe (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and its host,Adoxophyes sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was examined. Prior to the egress of a final-instar parasitoid larva from the 4th-instar host larva, host weight decreased by 22% from the maximum weight. The final body weight of a host larva was 27% of the maximum weight of a healthy 5th-instar host. Food consumption was significantly reduced in both 3rd-and 4th-instar parasitized larvae compared with healthy ones. In the 4th instar, a parasitized larva consumed 28% less artificial diet and produced less frass than a healthy larva. The growth rate of the endoparasitoid larvae greatly increased after their host's molt to the 4th instar. Parasitoid larval volume increased 40 fold in the 4th-instar host.   相似文献

Summary

The larval development of the ophiocomid ophiuroid Ophiomastix venosais described using SEM. The gastrula transforms into a uniformly ciliated early larva which progressively changes into a lecithotrophic late premetamorphic larva with a continuous bilateral ciliated band. This stage is short-lived and equivalent to a highly reduced ophiopluteus. Comparisons between O. venosa and other ophiuroid species whose development has been investigated suggest that, whatever the developmental mode (lecithotrophic or planktotrophic), a pluteus stage always occurs in ophiuroids with planktonic development. Two metamorphic stages were identified, the late metamorphic larva differing from the early one by the closure of the larval mouth. The appearance of the permanent mouth marks the end of the metamorphosis. The postlarva still possesses remnants of larval features. The transformation of the reduced ophiopluteus into a barrel-shaped metamorphic larva with transverse ciliated bands, a vitellaria larva, is followed. The possible occurrence of a unique type of metamorphic larva in non-brooding ophiuroids is discussed. Verification of this, however, needs further SEM investigations on metamorphic larva from species having “regular” planktotrophic development.  相似文献

Two exotic phytoseiid mites, Neoseiulus cucumeris and Amblyseius swirskii, are commercially available in Japan for the control of thrips and other pest insects. As part of a risk assessment of the non-target effects of releasing these two species, we investigated intraguild predation (IGP) between these exotic phytoseiid mites and an indigenous phytoseiid mite Gynaeseius liturivorus, which is promising as an indigenous natural enemy for the control of thrips in Japan. To understand IGP relations between the exotic and indigenous phytoseiid mites after use of the exotic mites for biological control, we investigated IGP between them in the absence of their shared prey. When an IG prey was offered to an IG predator, both exotic and indigenous females consumed the IG prey at all immature stages (egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph), especially at its larval stages. The propensity for IGP in a no-choice test was measured by the survival time of IG prey corrected using the survival time of thrips offered to the IG predator. There was no significant difference in the propensity for IGP between N. cucumeris and G. liturivorus, but the propensity was significantly higher in A. swirskii than G. liturivorus. The propensity for IGP in a choice test was measured by the prey choice of the IG predator when a conspecific and a heterospecific larva were offered simultaneously as IG prey. Both exotic females consumed the heterospecific larva only. The indigenous female preferentially consumed the heterospecific larva when the heterospecific larva was N. cucumeris, but consumed the conspecific larva when the heterospecific larva was A. swirskii. We concluded that further investigation would be necessary for the exotic mites’ risk assessment, since the propensity for IGP of the two exotic females was similar to or higher than that of the indigenous female in both the no-choice and choice tests.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the families Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae have considerable potential as biological control agents of soil-inhabiting insect pests. In the present study, the control potential of the EPNs Steinernema carpocapsae (TUR-S4), S. feltiae (Nemaplus), S. carpocapsae (Nemastar), S. feltiae (TUR-S3) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Nematop) against a new longicorn pest, Dorcadion pseudopreissi Breuning, 1962 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), on turf was examined in laboratory studies. Pathogenicity tests were performed at the following doses: 50, 100 and 150 Dauer Juveniles (DJs)/larva at 25°C. Highest mortalities (75–92%) of the larvae were detected at the dose of 150 DJs/larva for all nematodes used. Reproduction capabilities of the used EPNs were examined at doses of 50, 75, 100 and 150 DJs/larva at 25°C. S. carpocapsae (TUR-S4) had the most invasions (32 DJs/larva) and reproduction (28042 DJs/larva) at the dose of 100 DJs, and the highest reproduction (per invaded DJ into a larva) was observed in H. bacteriophora (Nematop) (2402.85 DJs) at a dose of 50 DJs. The foraging behaviour of the nematodes in the presence of D. pseudopreissi and Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Galleriidae) larvae was studied using a Petri dish filled with sand at 20°C. All of the used nematodes accumulated near the larvae section of both insect species (32–53% of recovered DJs) with a higher percentage of S. carpocapsae (TUR-S4) (53%) and H. bacteriophora (48%) (Nematop) moving towards larvae of D. pseudopreissi, than the S. feltiae strains.  相似文献

We have studied larvae of the freshwater ctenostome Hislopia malayensis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and LM of serial sections. Some additional observations on larvae of M. membranacea using SEM and CLSM are also reported. The overall configuration of muscles, nerves, and cilia of the two larvae are identical. However, the larva of H. malayensis is much smaller than that of M. membranacea, which may explain most of the differences observed. Although all major nerves and muscle strands are present in H. malayensis, they are generally composed of fewer fibers. The H. malayensis larva lacks the anterior and posterior intervalve cilia. Its pyriform organ is unciliated with only a small central depression. The adhesive epithelium is not invaginated as an adhesive sac and lacks the large muscles interpreted as adhesive sac muscles in the M. membranacea larva. The velum carries two rows of ciliated cells, though the lower “row” consists of only one or two cells. Both rows of ciliated cells are innervated by nerves, which have not been detected in the M. membranacea larva. The ciliated ridge of H. malayensis lacks the frontal cilia. The planktotrophic cyphonautes larvae in a number of ctenostome clades and in the “basal” cheilostome clade Malacostega (and probably in the earliest cheilostomes) support the idea that the cyphonautes larva is the ancestral larval type of the Eurystomata. It may even represent the ancestral larval type of the bryozoans (= ectoprocts). J. Morphol. 271:1094‐1109, 2010. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Fourth-stage larvae of four species of the Cyathostominae Nicoll, 1927 parasitic in donkeys Equus asinus L. from Ethiopia were identified mainly using moulting specimens. They are Cylicocyclus asini Matthee, Krecek & Gibbons, 2001, C. auriculatus (Looss, 1900) Chaves, 1930, Cyathostomum tetracanthum (Mehlis, 1831) Molin, 1861 (sensu Looss, 1900) and Cylindropharynx brevicauda Leiper, 1911. The larva of Cylicocyclus asini is similar to those of C. nassatus (Looss, 1900) Chaves, 1930 and C. leptostomum Kotlán, 1920, but differs from the former by the shape of the dorsal tooth in the oesophageal funnel, which is notably smaller than in C. asini but similar to that of C. leptostomum. However, the larva of C. asini differs from that of C. leptostomum in the size of the buccal capsule, which is notably larger than in C. leptostomum but similar to that of C. nassatus. The larva of C. auriculatus is very similar to that of C. insigne (Boulenger, 1917) Chaves, 1930. The larva of Cyathostomum tetracanthum is similar to those of Cylicostephanus bidentatus (Ihle, 1925) Lichtenfels, 1975, C. goldi (Boulenger, 1917) Lichtenfels, 1975 and Cyathostomum catinatum Looss, 1900. The larva of Cylindropharynx brevicauda is similar to that of Petrovinema skrjabini (Ershov, 1930) Ershov, 1943 but smaller in size. Including the four cyathostomine species identified in the present study, 36 species belonging to 13 genera have so far been described and identified of a total of 64 recognised and confirmed species of equine strongyles.  相似文献

Plant pathogen effectors encoded by Avirulence (Avr) genes benefit the pathogen by promoting colonization and benefit plants that have a matching resistance (R) gene by constituting a signal that triggers resistance. The Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), resembles a plant pathogen in showing R/Avr interactions. Because of these interactions, a wheat plant with the H13 resistance gene can be resistant or susceptible depending on the genotype of the larva that attacks the plant, being resistant if attack comes from a larva with a functional vH13 gene, but susceptible if attack comes from a larva with a non‐functional vH13 gene. In this study we asked: does this susceptible interaction involving plants with H13 look like susceptible interactions with plants lacking H13? Possibly, the H13 plant attacked by a larva with a non‐functional vH13 is induced to partial rather than complete resistance. Or the larva, lacking its vH13‐encoded effector, is compromised in its ability to induce susceptibility, which includes forcing the plant to create a gall nutritive tissue. Responses of epidermal cells to larval attack were explored using imaging techniques (light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy). Whole‐organism responses were investigated by measuring the growth of plants and larvae. No evidence was found for partial resistance responses by H13 plants or for a compromise in the ability of vH13 loss‐of‐function larvae to induce susceptibility. It appears that disrupting vH13 function is sufficient for overcoming the induced resistance mediated by the H13 gene.  相似文献

Abstract

The adult male and female of Xenochironomus canterburyensis (Freeman) are redescribed, and the larva and pupa are described for the first time. The immature stages are obligate, inquiline commensals of the freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi (Gray) inhabiting the littoral zone of some New Zealand lakes. The labral setae of the larva are modified to form an elongate feeding brush, and the pupa lacks a posterolateral spur on the eighth abdominal segment. X. canterburyensis appears to be closer to X. xenolabis in certain synapomorphic features and in that both are closely associated with a host species.  相似文献

Unidentified uropodid mite deutonymphs have been found in phoretic association with a late‐instar larva of Wiseana cervinata (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae). This is thought to be the first record of phoresy between such mites and a lepidopteran larva. Scanning electron micrographs of the mites and their attachments are presented.  相似文献

The bacteria Xenorhabdus spp. are entomopathogenic symbionts that can produce several toxic proteins that interfere the immune system of insects. We purified an insecticidal protein from Xenorhabdus ehlersii, and designated it as XeGroEL with an estimated molecular mass of ~58 kDa. Galleria mellonella larva injected with XeGroEL presented prophenoloxidase activation and hemocyte decrease. XeGroEL can kill G. mellonella larva in 48 h with an LD50 of 0.76 ± 0.08 μg/larva. Our results demonstrate that X. ehlersii possesses a toxic XeGroEL protein acting as a potential factor to activate proPO in host insect, which also provides a meaningful hypothesis to understand the interaction between nematode-symbiotic bacteria and host.  相似文献

The larva and pupa of Achyrolimonia basispina (Alex.) are described for the first time. New data on the morphology of the larva and pupa of A. decemmaculata (Loew) are discussed, and the morphological characteristics of the genus are defined more exactly. The larvae of these species develop in the dead wood of deciduous trees and in the old carpophores of wood fungi.  相似文献

The larval development of the Japanese flounder,Paralichthys olivaceus, was surveyed using two types of morphometric analyses, modified allometry and polar coordinate analysis by principal component analysis (PCA). In the former, centroid size was used as a growth index instead of total length (TL), such enabling the determination of more detailed changes in each character than ordinary allometry based upon TL. Polar coordinate analysis disclosed two remarkable inflexions during the larval development ofP. olivaceus. Postlarvae ofP. olivaceus were found to undergo four developmental phases. From the point of view of metamorphosis, the phases were named drifting larva, premetamorphic larva, metamorphic larva and postmetamorphic larva, respectively. These phases were also tested by other characters related to flounder metamorphosis.  相似文献

The relationship between the development ofCoccinella septempunctata brucki Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and its parasitoid,Perilitus coccinellae (Schrank) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied at two photoperiods (L 16:D8 and L 12: D12) at 26°C. The development ofP. coccinellae is well synchronized with the physiological state of the host,C. septempunctata, which can be parasitized not only as adult but also as larva or pupa. The parasitoid larva completed larval development within 19 days in a non-diapausing host, while in diapausing adults as well as in pupae held at diapause-averting conditions, the parasitoid larva ceased growth at the first instar. Growth was resumed when diapause of the host terminated or by the emergence of the adult host from the pupa. About 550 spheric cells, teratocytes, were liberated into the host hemocoel when the parasitoid egg hatched. The teratocytes increased in size in the active host, while their development was arrested in the diapausing host. Application of methoprene caused diapause termination of both host and parasitoid larva. The results indicate that the development of the larva ofP. coccinellae depends on the physiological conditions of the host,C. septempunctata brucki. The host-parasite relation thus represents an ‘endogenous synchronization’ in the sense of Schoonhoven's definition.  相似文献
