Exemplary for social insects, Temnothorax ants allow for various hands-on investigations in biology classes. The aim of this study was to provide a quantitative and qualitative analysis of secondary school students’ learning achievement after teaching units with ants lasting between one and six weeks. The questionnaires included transfer and factual knowledge tasks divided into eight fields of knowledge. Students (N = 459) from 22 classes participated in the study and received different treatments: The experimental group (n = 366) started their investigations by initial observation using stereo microscopes, while the control group (n = 93) conducted ant research without this introductory teaching unit. We investigated the influence of class level, gender and time period of participation on knowledge acquisition. Independent of class level, factual learning achievement was observed for all fields of knowledge except ecology. We did not find a positive correlation between time period of participation and basic ant knowledge acquisition. The findings suggest that ant research may be implemented within the framework of a progressive curriculum for all secondary school students. However, attentive and detailed observation of ant colonies with stereo microscopes and continuous repetition of technical terms seem to be inevitable preconditions for learning achievement.  相似文献

Two cytochrome P450 genes, CYP4AB1 and CYP4AB2, and the Gp-9 gene were identified as being specifically overexpressed in workers of the red imported fire ant using PCR-selected subtractive hybridization and cDNA array techniques. Full-length CYP4AB1 and CYP4AB2 were cloned and sequenced. The cDNA sequences of CYP4AB1 and CYP4AB2 have open reading frames of 1389 and 1533 nucleotides encoding proteins of 463 and 511 amino acid residues, respectively. Northern blot analysis was performed to compare expression levels of CYP4AB1, CYP4AB2, and Gp-9 for different developmental stages and castes of fire ants. We demonstrate that the expression of these three genes is developmentally and caste specifically regulated in red imported fire ants. Levels of CYP4AB1 mRNA were undetectable in 3rd+4th instars, worker pupae, and alate (mixed sex) pupae; readily detectable in male and female alates; increased (approximately 3-fold) in the queens; and rose to a maximum (13-fold) in workers. Similarly, the expression of CYP4AB2 mRNA was undetectable in 3rd+4th instars, worker pupae, and alate pupae; low in male and female alates and queens; and increased (approximately 7-fold) in workers. Levels of Gp-9 mRNA were readily detectable in male alates; increased (approximately 3-fold) in female alates; and reached a maximum (approximately 12-fold) in workers. Their caste-specific overexpression suggests the functional importance of CYP4AB1, CYP4AB2, and Gp-9 in workers of the red imported fire ant.  相似文献

—In 2015–2017, attendance of 15 invasive and 22 native species of herbaceous plants by ants was studied in 6 habitats in the environs of Kyiv (Ukraine). Altogether, 14 ant species were found, of which 12 were recorded on invasive plants and 9 on native plants; 8 aphid species were found on 8 invasive plant species. Five invasive plant species (Asclepias syriaca, Heracleum mantegazzianum, Oenothera biennis, Onopordum acanthium, and Amaranthus retroflexus) were found to be attractive to ants, with over a half of all the ant workers in all the habitats being recorded on them; besides, numerous colonies of 7 aphid species were also found on these plants. These invasive plants positively affect the structure of ant assemblages since the aphid colonies provide ants with food resource. The remaining 10 invasive plant species, including 5 transformer species, were poorly visited by ants and housed no aphid colonies, with the exception of Conyza canadensis on which the non-myrmecophilous aphid Uroleucon erigeronense (Thomas, 1878) was found. Two thirds of invasive plant species had a negative effect on the structure of ant assemblages because they replaced the native plants and thus reduced the trophic resources of aphids.

The ant-tended Australian butterfly, Jalmenus evagoras, has been a model system for studying the ecology and evolution of mutualism. A phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I sequences from 242 butterflies (615 bp) and 66 attendant ants (585 bp) from 22 populations was carried out to explore the relationship between ant association and butterfly population structure. This analysis revealed 12 closely related butterfly haplotypes in three distinct clades roughly corresponding to three allopatric subpopulations of the butterflies. Minimal genetic diversity and widespread haplotypes within biogeographical regions suggest high levels of matrilineal gene flow. Attendant ants are significantly more diverse than was previously thought, with at least seven well-defined clades corresponding to independent morphological determinations, distributed throughout the range of the butterflies. Nested analysis of molecular variance showed that biogeography, host plant, and ant associate all contribute significantly in explaining variation in butterfly genetic diversity, but these variables are not independent of one another. Major influences appear to come from fragmentation due to large-scale biogeographical barriers, and diversification following a shift in habitat preference. A consequence of such a shift could be codiversification of the butterfly with habitat-adapted ants, resulting in apparent phylogenetic concordance between butterflies and ants. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of possible effects of ant attendance on the diversification of Lycaenidae as a whole.  相似文献

Summary

Conditioning of isolated ants was attempted in the ant Myrmica sabuleti. Isolated ants did not die and could be visually as well as olfactorily conditioned. They acquired and kept ? or partly lost ? their visual ? or their olfactory ? conditioned responses as do ants living in a colony. Each individual of an ant colony is thus able to learn and memorize by itself. Any collective conditioning, learning and memory actually reflect the individuals’ performance. Naive workers paired with isolated previously conditioned ants apparently acquired olfactory conditioning in a shorter time than isolated ants, reaching a conditioning score identical to that of isolated ants. But they lost their apparent conditioning as soon as the olfactory cue was removed. Thus, imitation of nestmates exists in ants but does not lead, by itself, to learning sensu stricto since nothing of what has been imitated is retained.  相似文献

1. The influence of a wood ant, Formica aquilonia, on the defoliation of the white birch, Betula pubescens, and on its invertebrate community was studied in ant-exclusion experiments during two outbreaks, the decline phase of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata, and the peak year of the birch aphid, Euceraphis punctipennis, not tended by ants. 2. The numbers of the wood ant and Symydobius oblongus, a tended aphid, in birch foliage showed a strong positive correlation, and the former decreased rapidly when the distance from the ant mound increased, confirming that there was a distance-related gradient in arboreal ant predation. There may have been a parallel reduction in soil amelioration by ants through nest construction and food gathering. 3. The application of a glue ring around the trunk excluded ants totally from the canopy, inhibiting predation but not fertilization. 4. Ant-exclusion resulted in a 90–95% reduction in the growth of tended aphid colonies by mid-season. 5. Outbreak populations of the autumnal moth and the birch aphid were reduced by 45–67% and 77%, respectively, in control trees and correlated negatively with ant numbers. 6. The total percentage of leaf area damaged by moth larvae was 34% lower in ant-foraged than in unforaged trees. 7. Neither the distance from the ant mound nor its interaction with the glue treatment had any effect on the herbivores or folivory, indicating that the possible soil-ameliorating effect was weaker than predation, which reduced herbivore numbers at every distance studied (4–20 m). 8. Predation by ants also affected the abundance of syrphid larvae, predatory on both aphids, the percentage parasitism by a wasp, Aleiodes testaceus, on the autumnal moth, and thereby (or directly) its age (size) distribution. The presence of ants had no influence on spider abundance. 9. It is concluded that predation rather than soil amelioration is likely to be the reason why the degree of folivory and, during serious outbreaks, the mortality of trees are lower in the vicinity of wood-ant mounds.  相似文献

Summary

Carbohydrate food is of high importance for survival of ant colonies. Ants are known to use sugary excretions (honeydew) of various insects, nectar of floral and extrafloral nectaries, and even sap of some trees. However, the ability of ants to use sap of herbaceous plants has not been mentioned. This is the first evidence that ants of the genus Myrmica can intentionally ‘cut off’ young cereal sprouts to obtain plant sap. The investigation was carried out in a laboratory in 2018 and 2019 and involved three ant species of the genus Myrmica [12 colonies of M. rubra (Linnaeus, 1758); eight colonies of M. ruginodis Nylander, 1846; and five colonies of M. scabrinodis Nylander, 1846]. First observations were made occasionally in 10 ant colonies during the study of ant–aphid interactions. After three days of carbohydrate starvation, ants were supplied with the plants of wheat infested with aphids of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani, 1852). Within the first day in addition to ordinary trophobiotic relations with aphids, the workers of all the studied colonies demonstrated unexpected behaviour: they ‘cut off’ some sprouts and collected sap of these plants. The experimental investigation in 15 ant colonies of various sizes (about 150, 300 and 500 workers) supplied with the plants infested or non-infested with aphids has shown that getting sap of herbs depends greatly on ant colony needs and available resources. The number of damaged plants was much higher both in the larger colonies of ants and in the absence of aphids. This way of getting carbohydrates allows ants to quickly obtain some extra food needed to maintain colony viability and seems to be one of the mechanisms promoting survival of ants in conditions of acute carbohydrate deficiency. Abstract 1. This correlational study examines the relationship between the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) and native ants in a longleaf pine savanna. Fire ants are frequently associated with a decline in native ants throughout the invaded range, but fire ant invasion is often coupled with habitat disturbance. Invasion of fire ants into the longleaf pine savanna provides an opportunity to examine the structure of the ant community in the absence of habitat disturbance. 2. Pitfall trapping was conducted within the longleaf pine savanna as well as across a naturally occurring soil moisture gradient, in plots that had been artificially watered. 3. Species richness did not vary as a function of fire ant density. There was an inverse relationship between native ant density and fire ant density, but this abundance pattern does not necessarily imply a causal link between fire ant invasion and native ant decline. For individual species, fire ant densities were negatively correlated with the densities of only two native ant species, including Solenopsis carolinensis, a native species that potentially limits the invasion of fire ants. Additionally, fire ants and native ants respond differently to soil moisture, with native ants favouring drier conditions than fire ants. 4. The possible exclusion of fire ants by some native ants, as well as differences in habitat preferences, provide alternative explanations for the frequently observed negative correlation between fire ants and native ants.  相似文献

Interactions between the invasive Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, and native ant species were studied in a 450-ha biological reserve in northern California. Along the edges of the invasion, the presence of Argentine ants significantly reduced the foraging success of native ant species, and vice versa. Argentine ants were consistently better than native ants at exploiting food sources: Argentine ants found and recruited to bait more consistently and in higher numbers than native ant species, and they foraged for longer periods throughout the day. Native ants and Argentine ants frequently fought when they recruited to the same bait, and native ant species were displaced from bait during 60% of these encounters. In introduction experiments, Argentine ants interfered with the foraging of native ant species, and prevented the establishment of new colonies of native ant species by preying upon winged native ant queens. The Argentine ants' range within the preserve expanded by 12 ha between May 1993 and May 1994, and 13 between September 1993 and September 1994, with a corresponding reduction of the range of native ant species. Although some native ants persist locally at the edges of the invasion of Argentine ants, most eventually disappear from invaded areas. Both interference and exploitation competition appear to be important in the displacement of native ant species from areas invaded by Argentine ants.  相似文献

Extrafloral nectar of plants and honeydew of hemipterans is a food source extensively explored by ants. Although basically a sugary liquid food, nectar and honeydew are composed of different nutrients and offered in distinct ways; thus, ants must interact differently with plants and hemipterans. In this study we assessed the availability and dominance of nectar of extrafloral nectaries and honeydew of sap-sucking hemipterans (i.e., sugar-based resources) as mechanisms regulating interaction frequency and structuring ant-plant-hemipteran networks. We studied 12 plant species (240 shrubs, 20 per species) and 12 hemipteran species (240 aggregations, 20 per species) that interacted with 26 ant species in an area of Rupestrian Fields (Rocky Montane Savannah), Brazil. We observed that the 7 ant species that collected honeydew were a subset of the 25 ant species feeding on nectar, but the highly interacted species Camponotus crassus was the same for both subnetworks. The ant-plant subnetwork exhibited a nested pattern of interaction with a low degree of specialization, while the ant-hemipteran subnetwork exhibited lower nestedness but higher specialization. We found a positive relationship between the offer of EFNs and the number of interactions with ants, probably resulting from reduced competition in plants with high availability of EFNs. However, hemipteran species that were most abundant did not interact with more species of ants, probably because of the numerical dominance of the species tending all hemipteran aggregations, regardless of size. However, segregation between ant species was higher than expected by chance for both plants and hemipterans, confirming a deterministic factor (i.e., competition between ant species) regulating the frequency of interactions. In summary, the availability of ENFs seems to be an important mechanism regulating ant-plant interactions, while numerical dominance seems to be an important mechanism structuring ant-hemipteran interactions.  相似文献

Meat ants (Iridomyrmex purpureus and allies) are perceived to be dominant members of Australian ant communities because of their great abundance, high rates of activity, and extreme aggressiveness. Here we describe the first experimental test of their influence on other ant species, and one of the first experimental studies of the influence of a dominant species on any diverse ant community. The study was conducted at a 0.4 ha savanna woodland site in the seasonal tropics of northern Australia, where the northern meat ant (I. sanguineus) represented 41% of pitfall catches and 73% of all ants at tuna baits, despite a total of 74 species being recorded. Meat ants were fenced out of experimental plots in order to test their influence on the foraging success of other species, as measured by access to tuna baits. The numbers of all other ants and ant species at baits in exclusion plots were approximately double those in controls (controlling for both the fences and for meat ant abundance), and returned rapidly to control levels when fences were removed after 7 weeks. Individual species differend markedly in their response to the fencing treatment, with species of Camponotus and Monomorium showing the strongest responses. Fencing had no effect on pitfall catches of species other than the meat ant, indicating that the effect of meat ants at baits was directly due to interference with foraging workers, and not regulation of general forager abundance. Such interference by meat ants has important implications for the sizes and densities of colonies of other ant species, and ultimately on overall ant community structure.  相似文献

于2007年7月至2008年2月期间在增城龙眼园及周边的荒草地人工移殖1蚁巢及10蚁巢红火蚁,并采用陷阱法和诱饵诱集法调查研究红火蚁对新入侵龙眼园区和荒草地区蚂蚁类群多样性的影响。结果表明,在荫蔽、少干扰的龙眼园和杂草茂密、少干扰的未割草区,红火蚁难以成功定殖,对这两种生境蚂蚁类群的多样性几乎没有影响;在红火蚁成功定殖的1蚁巢割草区和10蚁巢割草区,红火蚁以这两种密度入侵对蚂蚁类群多样性的影响程度不同。在1蚁巢割草区,红火蚁入侵后5个月期间,由于其数量占蚂蚁个体总数的比例很少,对蚂蚁类群多样性的影响很小;在红火蚁成功定殖5个月后,第6—7个月其工蚁所占比例增加,蚂蚁类群个体数和优势度下降,多样性和均匀度增加;第8—9个月其工蚁所占比例继续增加,而蚂蚁个体数、多样性和均匀度下降,优势度增加。在10蚁巢割草区,红火蚁入侵后,蚂蚁类群个体数、多样性和均匀度下降,优势度增加。红火蚁入侵对1蚁巢割草区和10蚁巢割草区蚂蚁物种数的影响较小。  相似文献

The intensity of attendance by a honeydew-foraging ant, Lasuis niger, on the red wax scale insect, Ceroplastes rubens, was estimated at different manipulated densities in the field. The time that individual ants were present and the total attendance time (seconds x number of ants) of ants on scale-infested twigs significantly increased as the density of C. rubens increased, i.e. ant attendance was density dependent. To determine the effects of density dependence of ant attendance on parasitism of C. rubens by Anicetus beneficus, we measured parasitism rates in the field at different density levels of C. rubens both with ant attendance and with ants excluded. Parasitism rates were higher when ants were excluded, at each density level. Although the parasitism rate significantly deceased as scale density increased, whether or not ants attended, the difference in parasitism rate between density levels was strikingly less without ant attendance. Therefore, the density-dependent decrease of parasitism rate was more pronounced with ant attendance. Mortality not due to parasitism showed density dependence in both conditions and did not change when ants were excluded. These results indicate that attending ants reduce parasitism and that, as a consequence of the density dependence of ant attendance, the efficiency of reduction of parasitism by ants is enhanced at higher densities of C. rubens.  相似文献

Ascertaining the costs and benefits of mutualistic interactions is important for predicting their stability and effect on community dynamics. Despite widespread designation of the interaction between ants and extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) as a mutualism and over 100 years of studies on ant benefits to plants, the benefits to ants have never been experimentally quantified. The success of invasive ants is thought to be linked to the availability of carbohydrate-rich resources, though reports of invasive ant visits to EFNs are mixed. In two laboratory experiments, we compared worker survival of one native (Iridomyrmex chasei) and two invasive ant species (Linepithema humile and Pheidole megacephala) exposed to herbivorized or non-herbivorized EFN-bearing plants (Acacia saligna) or positive and negative controls. We found that non-herbivorized plants did not produce any measurable extrafloral nectar, and ants with access to non-herbivorized plants had the same survival as ants with access to an artificial plant and water (unfed ants). Ants given herbivorized plants had 7–11 times greater worker survival relative to unfed ants, but there were no differences in survival between native and invasive ants exposed to herbivorized plants. Our results reveal that ants cannot induce A. saligna extrafloral nectar production, but workers of both native and invasive ant species can benefit from extrafloral nectar as much as they benefit from sucrose.  相似文献

白僵菌是最具防治害虫潜力的一类昆虫病原真菌。本研究测定了球孢白僵菌Beauveria bassiana 237菌株对红火蚁Solenopsis invicta的感染毒力,并探究了白僵菌侵染对红火蚁免疫相关酶活性及相关基因表达的影响。结果显示,该白僵菌菌株对红火蚁的毒力较强,在孢子悬浮液108孢子/mL浓度下,对红火蚁的致死中时间LT50为5.288±0.2014 d;在10^4~10^8孢子/mL的不同浓度处理下,红火蚁死亡率随孢子浓度的增加而显著增加。经计算,第4~10天致死中浓度LC50值由8.82×10^6孢子/mL降低到8.95×10^5孢子/mL。红火蚁被球孢白僵菌感染后,体内保护酶和解毒酶发生了不同程度的改变。其中保护酶类酚氧化酶(PO)的活性在白僵菌处理后的第12 h已出现抑制,而在第24 h、48 h、72 h时均显著高于对照;超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)活性在12 h时与对照无显著差异,但在24~48 h阶段酶活显著上升,之后下降;过氧化物酶(POD)在较早时段保持与对照无显著差异水平,至中后期48~72 h出现持续升高。解毒酶类混合功能氧化酶系(MFO)的活性在整个检测时间段内表现为抑制-上升-抑制-上升的波动状态;谷胱甘肽S-转移酶(GSTs)活性的变化与SOD相似,只在24~48 h阶段出现上升。白僵菌还导致红火蚁免疫信号通路Toll途径相关基因表达量变化。在处理后12 h,识别因子GNBP1、Spaetzle即被激活,维持上调-回调波动趋势;而信号传递因子Myd88、pelle在检测的12~72 h内基本处于被抑制状态,只有Myd88在48 h时表达量上升;转录因子Dorsal以及抗菌肽Defensin在12~24 h都已被显著激活,而在后续48~72 h被抑制。综上所述,球孢白僵菌237菌株通过调节红火蚁酶活以及免疫相关基因的表达量实现成功侵染和致病作用,具有很高的生防应用价值。  相似文献

The locomotor activity rhythm of the media workers of the ant species Camponotus compressus was monitored under constant conditions of the laboratory to understand the role of circadian clocks in social organization. The locomotor activity rhythm of most ants entrained to a 24 h light/dark (12:12 h; LD) cycle and free-ran under constant darkness (DD) with circadian periodicities. Under entrained conditions about 75% of media workers displayed nocturnal activity patterns, and the rest showed diurnal activity patterns. In free-running conditions these ants displayed three types of activity patterns (turn-around). The free-running period (τ) of the locomotor activity rhythm of some ants (10 out of 21) showed period lengthening, and those of a few (6 out of 21) showed period shortening, whereas the locomotor activity rhythm of the rest of the ants (5 out of 21) underwent large phase shifts. Interestingly, the pre-turn-around τ of those ants that showed nocturnal activity patterns during earlier LD entrainment was shorter than 24 h, which became greater than 24 h after 6–9 days of free-run in DD. On the other hand, the pre-turn-around τ of those ants, which exhibited diurnal patterns during earlier LD entrainment, was greater than 24 h, which became shorter than 24 h after 6–9 days of free-run in DD. The patterns of activity under LD cycles and the turn-around of activity patterns in DD regime suggest that these ants are shift workers in their respective colonies, and they probably use their circadian clocks for this purpose. Circadian plasticity thus appears to be a general strategy of the media workers of the ant species C. compressus to cope with the challenges arising due to their roles in the colony constantly exposed to a fluctuating environment.  相似文献

The ant fauna of 12 sand-mined plots representing a range of rehabilitation ages and three undisturbed vegetation controls was surveyed during 1982. Physical and botanical parameters were also measured in each plot. Sixty-four ant species were collected from the 15 study plots, of which 44 had colonized one or more of the mined plots. Ant recolonization proceeded rapidly in plots up to 6 years old and may have been influenced by the passage of time, plant cover, density and diversity variables, the amount of litter and by the paucity of logs. In terms of ant species composition, the mined plots were most different from the undisturbed areas. The older plots exhibited a lower ant species richness and this is believed to have resulted from interspecific competition with the tramp ant, Pheidole megacephala. Ant succession proceeded in a slower fashion in the plots dominated by P megacephala. The influence of ants on seeds applied during broadcast seeding of rehabilitated areas was also investigated. Seed removal by ants was greatest for the arillate seeds of Acacia concurrens but moderate quantities of Allocasuarina spp., Eucalyptus spp. Xanthorrhoea sp. and Banksia spp. were taken also. Seed removal by ants was low in the areas which had recently had topsoil applied except where ants foraged from adjacent rehabilitation areas; here they exerted their influence up to 50 m across the fresh topsoil. Seed removal rates in topsoil adjacent to forest were low. Removal rates in a revegetated area 2.5 years old approached those in forest. This indicates that the previous ant-seed relationship had been partially restored by this time, although the relative contribution of seed harvesters and elaiosome collectors still needs to be assessed.  相似文献

On the other hand, the pre-turn-around τ of those ants, which exhibited diurnal patterns during earlier LD entrainment, was greater than 24 h, which became shorter than 24 h after 6-9 days of free-run in DD. The patterns of activity under LD cycles and the turn-around of activity patterns in DD regime suggest that these ants are shift workers in their respective colonies, and they probably use their circadian clocks for this purpose. Circadian plasticity thus appears to be a general strategy of the media workers of the ant species C. compressus to cope with the challenges arising due to their roles in the colony constantly exposed to a fluctuating environment.  相似文献
