The systematic identity and genetic divergence of cryptic taxa and morphological subspecies in the Greenside Darter Etheostoma blennioides complex are analyzed from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data, along with morphological characters. We sequenced the mtDNA cytochrome b gene and control region and is the nuclear S7 intron 1 for 345 Greenside Darters from 19 locations across their distribution including areas of sympatry and allopatry, in comparison to putative sister species and relatives. Results provide the first genetic evidence that E. gutselli is a separate species and is the sister species of E. blennius, which together with E. rupestre comprise the sister group to the Greenside Darter complex; separating approximately 4.0 mya. MtDNA results show that the complex comprises 6 clades and supports only the morphological subspecies Etheostoma blennioides blennioides, distinguished by theta(ST)=0.94, approximately 1.7 my, scale counts, and ventral squamation. The former E. b. pholidotum and E. b. newmanii are polyphyletic and are invalid taxa, together comprising 5 differentiated clades that diverged approximately 0.90-1.7 mya. Nuclear DNA results recover some of the mtDNA clades, which are distinguished morphologically by subtle meristic count differences. Populations of E. b. blennioides genetically diverge, with diversity increasing to the southwest; attributed to restricted gene flow and genetic isolation with geographic distance. Samples of the former E. b. pholidotum from the Great Lakes/Wabash River clade are less divergent, with diversity increasing to the southwest, reflecting allopatric fragmentation and isolation by distance.  相似文献

The genetic structure of a stream-dwelling fish, the Greenside Darter, Etheostoma blennioides, is described from variation at nine microsatellite loci in 26 populations in the northern-most portions of the species’ range in southern Ontario, Canada in two sampling years. We found relatively high levels of genetic structure at the among- and within-watershed scales, with some watersheds and populations exhibiting very high divergence. The Ausable River populations were especially isolated, containing distinct populations of potential conservation concern. Temporal replicates at selected localities showed evidence of substantial temporal variation in genetic structure, perhaps resulting from movement among sites. We found strong evidence for an effect of river barriers (dams and weirs) on dispersal measured by genotype assignment techniques. However, we found no bias in upstream vs downstream dispersal. Significant isolation-by-distance relationships in both sample years indicate that river distance is an important factor regulating gene flow in these watersheds. The Canadian Greenside Darter populations are expanding their range into more northerly watersheds, but also show substantial within-watershed genetic structure despite substantial dispersal.  相似文献

Quarterly measurements were conducted of the structure, abundance, and diversity of macroinvertebrates comprising two distinct, but overlapping zoobenthic communities in backwaters to Wheeler Reservoir Alabama. The study area included portions of Huntsville Spring Branch (HSB) and Indian Creek (IC) which contain massive quantities of DDT residues (DDTR = DDT, DDD, DDE). Additionally, sewage effluents entering HSB just upstream from the study area have resulted in nutrient enrichment, especially at the two uppermost stations. Herpobenthos (burrowed in bottom sediments) and haptobenthos (attached to substrates) were collected at seven stations along an east-west gradient including a control site above the DDT contamination, and sites with mean sediment residues ranging from 2,730 ppm DDTR in HSB down to 12 ppm DDTR at the mouth of IC.Fifty taxa were collected from dredge samples of the herpobenthos; Tubificid oligochaetes and chironomid larvae comprised 97% of the herpobenthos. At the two uppermost stations in HSB, the control site and the site with the highest sediment DDTR, oligochaete density averaged twice that of chironomids. Downstream, densities of both groups were similar. Mean density at the upper two stations was 9431 and 10 644 organisms m–2, respectively, significantly (P < 0.05) higher than downstream stations. Herpobenthos was dominated by detrital-algal feeders in HSB while in IC, predaceous chironomids were more numerous. Taxa diversity was also lowest (P < 0.05) at the two upper sites.Forty-five taxa were collected from artificial substrate (Hester-Dendy multiplate samplers) samples of the haptobenthos. Naidid oligochaetes and chironomids dominated the haptobenthos, although nematodes were occasionaly abundant. Chironomids were more abundant than oligochaetes at all sites except the control station, which received the greatest nutrient enrichment from sewage effluents. Mean haptobenthic density in the middle portion of the study area ranged from 31 163 to 37 310 organisms m–2 and was diferent (P < 0.05) from upper and lower stations. Taxa diversity was lowest at the upper-most station, but no trends were evident among stations.Nutrient enrichment from sewage effluents apparently had greater impact on zoobenthic communities in the HSB-IC System than did DDT contamination. However, the presence of DDTR undoubtedly contributed, in part, to the few Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera collected at contaminated stations. Based on the density of oligochaetes and chironomid larvae at station 2 (highest DDTR), macroinvertebrates in this system are resistant to DDTR.  相似文献

We examined channel and point bar changes over time in the Pearl River, a meandering, Coastal Plain stream in Mississippi and Louisiana. We interpreted extreme changes in bar area as evidence of channel instability and related this to the diversity and abundance of darters in the river. Darters were less diverse and abundant in more disturbed reaches in comparison with relatively undisturbed reaches. Darter abundance was positively correlated with proximity to extreme bar-area changes. The relationship between channel instability and darter abundance observed here points to the importance of landscape level approaches to in-stream habitat management. The results suggest that river management practices that prevent or mitigate extreme changes in channel or sediment dynamics should be adopted for the benefit of benthic communities.  相似文献

The federally endangered Alabama lampmussel (Lampsilis virescens) has been presumed extirpated in the Emory river, TN for almost four decades. In the fall of 2011, three specimens that were morphologically identified as L. virescens (based on external shell morphology) were collected from the Emory river. The significance of such a find led biologists to take a noninvasive tissue sample from each individual for genetic confirmation. Approximately 400 nucleotides of the mtDNA COI gene were sequenced for each individual along with two samples of L. virescens from the Paint Rock river. DNA sequence data was also obtained from Genbank for other Lampsilis sp. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic methods revealed strong support for a clade consisting of putative Emory river L. virescens and known L. virescens (Paint Rock river origin) that was sister to all other taxa. These results indicated that the individuals collected from the Emory river were indeed L. virescens.  相似文献

Zooplankton communities were studied in a river and its tributaries with different hydrological, biological and physico-chemical conditions. Small similarities were noted in the zooplankton community (mostly Rotifera) between a tributary characterised by a regular bed and the river. No influence of a tributary with an irregular bed and variable water flow was noted on the zooplankton of the river it joined. It was concluded that the tributaries had very little influence on the zooplankton community in the river which they joined. The most probable reasons for this were the predatory behaviour of fry, escape of zooplankton into the river vegetation and therefore not carried down by the river current, and reproduction of zooplankton in slack waters, small floodplains and densely vegetated riparian zones of the main river.  相似文献

SUMMARY. A standard method is given for describing plant communities in fast-flowing streams and rivers. This involves the selection of a representative 10-m length of stream (termed a reach) which can be re-located exactly. Various estimates of the relative areas covered by different physiognomic forms and the relative proportions of species present are then combined to give a 'semi-quantitative' account, which can be compared with data collected at other sites or times. The method has been applied to six sites on the River Tees system. A site below Cow Green reservoir with markedly regulated flows, differs from the others in various ways. Bryophytes show a greater cover here than elsewhere throughout the year and a conspicuous cover of Phormidium occurs in autumn. Filamentous green algae of many different species are abundant at this site in late summer and early autumn. At the most downstream site where such seasonal growths also occur, a single species, Cladophora glomerata , is dominant. Conspicuous spring diatom 'bursts' occurred at the two upstream sites and a month later at the two downstream sites.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The foreguts of two setipalpian stonefly nymphs, Skwala parallela and Hesperoperla pacifica , from tributaries of the Clearwater River, Idaho, were examined in terms of composition and fullness. A total of 736 nymphs were collected at 06.00,12.00,18.00 and 24.00 hours during a 1-week period in August in order to examine diel variation in both diet composition and feeding periodicity. Substantial diel variation in diet composition and Electivity Indices (E) occurred. No single prey taxon was consistently the principal component in the diet of either stonefly species during all 6-h sampling intervals. Overall, hydropsychids (15.3–60.6%) were the major food of H. pacifica in Mission Creek whereas chironomid larvae were the chief prey of S. parallela in Mission (10.0–47.2%) and Lapwai (14.9–28.0%) Creeks. Nymphs were nocturnal feeders with feeding increasing from 18.00 to 06.00 hours and with peak feeding occurring from 24.00 to 06.00 hours.  相似文献

The myxosporean parasite Parvicapsula minibicornis is described from adult sockeye and coho salmon during spawning migrations in tributaries of the Columbia River in Canada and the United States. These observations extend the known distribution of this parasite from the Fraser River drainage basin. The parasite was identified in Columbia River salmonids using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and by in situ hybridization, but unlike in Fraser River salmon, it was not observed in conventional histological preparations of the kidney. Prevalence of the parasite determined by PCR was higher in spawning sockeye from the Fraser River than in those from the Okanagan River. Our ability to explain the relatively low prevalence and absence of clinical P. minibicornis infections in Columbia River salmon is hampered by our poor understanding of the life cycle of this parasite.  相似文献

The Cherokee darter Etheostoma scotti is a federally threatened fish endemic to the Etowah River system of northwest Georgia. In order to analyse the population structure and genetic diversity of this fish, eight tetranucleotide microsatellite genetic markers were developed. The marker set was applied to 13 additional darter species to test cross-species amplification and polymorphism. Successful amplification was obtained for all eight loci in each of the 13 other species of darters, with between seven and eight polymorphic loci per species.  相似文献

The present study aimed to investigate the distribution and abundance of fish eggs and larvae in three important tributaries (Chapecó, Peixe, and Ligeiro rivers) of the Upper Uruguay River. The spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae were studied as well as the correlation between environmental parameters and the abundance of ichthyoplankton species. The study was conducted between October 2005 and September 2006. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected at night with cylindroconical 0.5-mm mesh plankton nets every 5 days. Of the 591 samples collected, 170 contained ichthyoplankton organisms, resulting in the capture of 12,847 fish eggs and 962 fish larvae. Twenty-seven fish species were observed, of which 69% were Characiforms and 27% were Siluriforms. Among the fish species captured, the representatives were predominantly young forms of small and medium size fishes, with rheophilic species occurring infrequently. Eggs occurred exclusively between October and January, while the highest larvae occurrence was observed between November and December. Fish larvae assemblage structure was shown to be related to some environmental variables. There was a tendency of higher values of water temperature and velocity at the lower sampling sites than at the upper ones, as well an increase number of eggs and larvae. The study tributaries serve as reproduction sites and nursery areas for several fish species of the Upper Uruguay River; thus, the maintenance of their integrity is important for the preservation of diversity and enhancement of fisheries in the region.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Velocity measurements at fourteen hydrometric stations in the Tweed basin are described and analysed. Along-stream velocity variations are examined and it is shown that at most flow levels the highest velocities occur at the lower, flatter end of the river system. Estimates of the frequency with which velocities of different magnitudes can be expected to occur in the river are also presented. These indicate that the velocity at most stations rarely exceeds 3.0 m s−1 and for most of the time it lies between 0.25 and 1.0 m s−1. The inadequacy of subjective velocity assessment is stressed and a method suggested whereby data similar to those presented could readily be produced for almost any cross-section along a river like the Tweed.  相似文献

The aquatic insects of the Neman River and its tributaries were studied. 178 species belonging to 9 orders were found: Collembola—2 species, Ephemeroptera—33, Odonata—16, Plecoptera—10, Heteroptera—20, Coleoptera—39, Megaloptera—2, Trichoptera—54, and Lepidoptera—2 species. Two species of aquatic insects new for the Belarusian fauna were found, Pomatinus substriatus (Ph. Müller, 1806) (Coleoptera) and Brachycercus europaeus Kluge, 1991 (Ephemeroptera).  相似文献

The endangered vermilion darter (Etheostoma chermocki) is endemic to the Black Warrior River system in the Mobile Basin in Alabama. Restoration and conservation of this species require an understanding of its population genetic structure, which can be characterized using microsatellite DNA. Nine microsatellite loci were developed; eight loci were polymorphic. Although observed heterozygosity was lower than expected heterozygosity in most polymorphic loci, only one locus showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. These nine markers were tested in an additional 24 species of Etheostoma and appear to have sufficient allelic variation to be useful in studies of population genetic structure.  相似文献

Synopsis Large male tessellated darters, Etheostoma olmstedi, defend flat-bottomed rocks, the undersides of which serve as spawning substrates. Because females attach eggs directly onto bare stone, a spawning bout necessarily decreases the surface area available for further breeding at a nest. In apparent response to the female preference of ovipositing on rocks with the most bare surface, fathers abandon nests with their attached offspring to search for rocks with more uncovered surface. Egg abandonment also results after roving fathers intercept and spawn with ripe females and remain at a different rock to care for a new clutch. In essence, large males appear to maximize the number of eggs they fertilize by sequentially monopolizing breeding patches that are temporarily most desirable to females. The costs to a father of abandoning his eggs appear to be low for two reasons: (1) non-territorial males, created by a scarcity of suitable rocks, readily occupy vacant nests, and clean and aerate the abandoned eggs; and (2) after water hardening, eggs are less vulnerable to cannibalism. The maintenance of eggs by nonparental males may be both incidental to scrubbing the ceiling for their own breeding and adaptive in that viable eggs stimulate females to spawn; neither would appear to involve parental investment costs. Thus, allopaternal care in the tessellated darter may have evolved because it is performed in the selfish pursuit of spawning opportunities while entailing little, if any, of the costs normally subsumed within parental investment.  相似文献

In order to investigate a potential hybrid zone between the candy darter, Etheostoma osburni, and variegate darter, Etheostoma variatum, and examine population variation within E. osburni, a suite of primers for 15 polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed. The average number of alleles per locus was 5.5 in E. osburni and 7.6 in E. variatum, and the average observed heterozygosities were 62.5% and 71.4%, respectively. There were no deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and no observed linkage disequilibrium after Bonferroni correction. The utility of these primers was also tested in 11 species of darters representing all four genera of darters. Success of cross-species amplification was largely consistent with phylogenetic relationships of darters.  相似文献
