ABSTRACT

This paper describes the whistled songs of two allopatric populations of the European starling and spotless starling in NE Spain. The results show that European starlings in NE Spain sing the same whistled themes found earlier in other European populations and confirm the universal character of these themes. There are some differences between European starlings from NE Spain and other populations: rising phases appear for Inflection theme high-form, Inflection theme and Simple theme, and also differences of rate of emission appear for others (Rhythmic theme). Harmonic theme has not been found. Likewise, the first analysis of the spotless starling's whistled song shows that it shares the same general whistled song structure with the European starling; whistles have similar structural parameters (modulation, duration, frequency) and can be classified in the same categories or themes; a new theme appears, the Trilled theme, which has not been found to date in the European starling. Dialectal areas have been found in both species for the same themes (Inflection theme, Simple theme). The males of both studied populations have larger repertoires in comparison to other studied populations of the European starling.  相似文献

Birds with small song repertoires have a limited number of song types which may serve multiple functions. The Grey‐cheeked Fulvetta Alcippe morrisonia is a non‐migratory species of lowland forests in Taiwan. Its song consists of two distinct phrases: a whistled phrase and a harmonic one. Each individual usually sings only one type of whistled phrase, and the geographical patterns of songs can be distinguished by the motif of this phrase. We proposed a dual adaptation hypothesis for the functions of these two phrases. Playback experiments including six sound stimuli (familiar whistled phrases, familiar harmonic phrases familiar complete songs, foreign whistled phrases, foreign harmonic phrases and foreign complete songs) were conducted at 12 sites in the Shoushan Nature Park of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Grey‐cheeked Fulvettas came closer to the playback speaker and increased counter‐singing more in response to the familiar whistled phrase (local dialect) than to a foreign whistled phrase (distant dialect). However, birds responded equally to the playback of harmonic stimuli from familiar and foreign sources. We suggest that in this species, whistled phrases are used for local recognition and harmonic phrases are used for species recognition in short‐range communication.  相似文献

Previous studies revealed that whistled songs of starlings can be separated into different categories, among which five themes are found in the repertoires of all (or most) individuals. These “specific” themes show local variations but the different themes have different sizes of dialect areas. This study investigates the temporal evolution of this complex dialectal system. Observations were made in an area where dialects were mapped three years earlier. They reveal an obvious temporal evolution of dialects, although the degree of variation differs according to the theme. No structural change was observed for two themes (CC and ST), but some temporal dynamics in their dialect boundaries did appear. There were changes in the structures and boundaries of two other themes (IT and HT). However, they showed:
  • — a relationship between new and old structures, either with persistence of the old variants or with an apparent drift. Almost no really new structures were observed.
  • — all the 1980 variants recorded in 1983 were found at sites not far from the original one. The main changes consisted of extensions or regressions of variants along boundaries.
Lastly, the temporal evolution of RT dialects is unusual in that the changes are more sudden. The variants have been replaced by different ones in some cases, but in others they have remained stable. The complexity of the dialectal system is persistent on a temporal level, varying from stability for ST to sudden changes for RT, with IT and HT intermediate.  相似文献

Echolocation and whistle production, group sizes, and activities of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins were compared across four regions (Wilmington, NC Intracoastal Waterway [ICW]; Wilmington coastline; Southport, NC coastline; and Sarasota, FL inshore waters). Number of whistles and echolo-cation bouts differed significantly across sites. Dolphins whistled significantly more in Southport than in the other sites, independent of group size. Unlike at the other sites, dolphin vocalizations in Southport did not vary significantly across activities; this difference may be due to the fact that Southport animals were often found behind shrimp-trawling vessels, which may affect their behavior. Resident Sarasota dolphins vocalized significantly less than dolphins at the NC sites. At most sites, echolocation production per dolphin decreased as group size increased, supporting the idea that echolocation information is shared. In the ICW and Sarasota, echolocation production per dolphin was highest while feeding, indicating that echolocation is used in foraging. At all sites but Southport, whistle production per dolphin was highest while socializing, indicating that whistles are used in communication. Overall, these data show that dolphins have different vocal and activity patterns at different sites; thus, caution should be used when extrapolating results from one study site to another.  相似文献

Whistled songs of male starlings were studied in Australia and results compared with previous ones in Europe. Starling whistle sonograms can be divided into general classes according to certain criteria. All or most males sing five whistled types (“species-specific” themes), plus other (“individual”) themes. The basic repertoire of species-specific themes is almost the same in Europe and Australia with the same characteristics and similar variation ranges. In both continents each male has a certain number of individual themes, but Australian repertoires tend to be smaller, with two species-specific themes less and fewer individual themes. In all study areas dialects were based on local variations in species-specific theme structure, but the Australian dialectal system is simpler than in Europe. Therefore basic characteristics seem to have been similarly transmitted across generations in both continents. But some of the differences (individual characteristics, repertoire size, frequencies) may stem from different habitat characteristics and also social structure, which could have greatly affected song differentiation.  相似文献

The age structure, abundance, net immigration and loss of trout populations were investigated in eleven tributary sites and two main river sites on the River Wye. Marking experiments indicated that recruitment to the site populations was mainly by immigration which began during the O-group phase and continued, with seasonal fluctuations, throughout life. Immigrant fish had a higher probability of being lost from the populations than residents providing a statistical distinction between mobile and sedentary components of the population. The turnover of the site populations is described using a simple exponential model, and half-times at different sites (stream length, 50 m) ranged from 140 to 430 days. Information is provided on the distribution, size and maturity composition of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) stocks in the Elephant Island and King George Island areas, and at repeatedly sampled sites to the north of each island, during January–February, 1988. The overall distributional patterns of different sizes and maturity stages demonstrated a seasonal progression of those observed in the Antarctic Peninsula region during November–December, 1987 by Siegel (1989). The krill sampled at each island site represented different size-maturity groups and demonstrated different horizontal and vertical distributional characteristics. These distributional differences may be related to the demographic differences and/or hydrographie differences between the two sites.  相似文献

Summary The temporal pattern of replication of the rRNA and legumin genes differs in synchronized pea root cells. The relative number of rRNA genes replicated hourly during the first five hours of S phase ranges between 5 and 10 percent. In late S phase, during hours six through nine, the number of rRNA genes replicated increases reaching a maximum of about 25 percent at the ninth hour. Unlike the rRNA genes, the legumin genes have a wave-like pattern of replication peaking in early S phase at the third hour and again in late S phase at the eighth hour.Replicating rDNA, isolated by benzoylated naphthoylated DEAE-column chromatography, has EcoR I restriction sites that are absent in non-replicating rDNA sequences. The cleavage of these sites is independent of the time of rDNA replication. The transient nature of the EcoR I sites suggests that they exist in a hemimethylated state in parental DNA.The two Hind III repeat-size classes of rDNA of var. Alaska peas are replicated simultaneously as cells progress through S phase. Thus, even if the 9.0 kb and 8.6 kb repeat classes are located on different chromosomes, their temporal order of replication is the same.  相似文献

We have investigated the attachment of the DNA to the nuclear matrix during the division cycle of the plasmodial slime mold Physarum polycephalum. The DNA of plasmodia was pulse labelled at different times during the S phase and the label distribution was studied by graded DNase digestion of the matrix-DNA complexes prepared from nuclei isolated by extraction with 2 M NaCl. Pulse labelled DNA was preferentially recovered from the matrix bound residual DNA at any time of the S phase. Label incorporated at the onset of the S phase remained preferentially associated with the matrix during the G2 phase and the subsequent S phase. The occurrence of the pulse label in the matrix associated DNA regions was transiently elevated at the onset of the subsequent S phase. Label incorporated at the end of the S phase was located at DNA regions which, in the G2 phase, were preferentially released from the matrix by DNase treatment. From the results and previously reported data on the distribution of attachment sites it can be concluded that origins of replicons or DNA sites very close to them are attached to the matrix during the entire nuclear cycle. The data further indicate that initiations of DNA replication occur at the same origins in successive S phases. Replicating DNA is bound to the matrix, in addition, by the replication fork or a region close to it. This binding is loosened after completion of the replication.  相似文献

Release of CHO-K1 cells from plateau or stationary phase and reentry into the cell cycle is specifically and reversibly blocked at two distinct sites by the anticalmodulin drug W13. The first block occurs early during release while the cells are still at G0/G1, whereas the second occurs later in reentry during early S phase. As determined by radioimmunoassay, calmodulin levels undergo changes at three distinct steps in plateau-phase entry and release. First, the entry of exponentially growing cells into plateau phase is accompanied by an increase in the calmodulin level. The second change is a reduction in the calmodulin content of cells within the first hour following release from plateau phase. The third change is the subsequent increase in calmodulin levels, which precedes entry of the cells into S phase. Analysis of calmodulin mRNA levels by dot-blot hybridization demonstrates that the changes in calmodulin protein are preceded by changes in calmodulin mRNA. Furthermore, whereas a decrease in CaM mRNA is observed within the first hour following plateau release, no such decrease is observed for beta-actin mRNA, suggesting that this decrease may be selective for calmodulin. This selectivity is further substantiated by the fact that identical changes in calmodulin and calmodulin mRNA are observed in cells released from plateau by two different techniques. Taken together, these data suggest that calmodulin may play an important role in the reentry of cells into the cell cycle.  相似文献

The phosphorylating of the lysine-rich histone at various stages in the cell cycle has been studied. In rapidly dividing cell populations the lysine-rich histone is phosphorylated rapidly after synthesis and more slowly once bound to the chromosome. The half-life of hydrolysis of such interphase phosphorylation in 5 hr except during mitosis when the phosphata hydrolysis increases almost three-fold. During mitosis there is extensive phosphorylation at sites different from those phosphorylated during interphase and a smaller measure of sites common to both mitotic and interphase cells. The sites of mitotic phosphorylation are most critically distinguished from those phosphorylated in interphase by the rapidly hydrolysis of M-phase phosphohistone when the cells divide and enter the G1 phase of the cell cycle.  相似文献

The binding of 3H-spiperone to its 3 high affinity sites (dopaminergic D2, serotonergic S2 and spirodecanone site) was determined in forebrain homogenates of 14,30 and 88-90 day old male rats at different times of the day. Diurnal variations were seen in the spirodecanone site from postnatal day 15, in the D2 and S2 sites at the age of 30 days. Each site showed a different diurnal rhythm, moreover, the rhythms of the D2 and S2 sites differed between immature and adult animals. Diurnal variations of motor activity were recorded at the age of 30 and 88-90 days. The two developmental stages differed with respect to the activity pattern of the dark phase. At both stages, the motor activity pattern was found to be a mirror image of the variation in D2 binding sites during the dark phase. Our data point to differences in the regulation of various neuroleptic binding sites in immature and adult animals. They further suggest a link between the dopaminergic D2 site and motor activity which is evident throughout ontogeny.  相似文献

Watercraft may provide the greatest source of anthropogenic noise for bottlenose dolphins living in coastal waters. A resident community of about 140 individuals near Sarasota, Florida, are exposed to a vessel passing within 100 m approximately every six minutes during daylight hours. I investigated the circumstances under which watercraft traffic may impact the acoustic behavior of this community, specifically looking for short-term changes in whistle frequency range, duration, and rate of production. To analyze whistles and received watercraft noise levels, acoustic recordings were made using two hydrophones towed from an observation vessel during focal animal follows of 14 individual dolphins. The duration and frequency range of signature whistles did not change significantly relative to vessel approaches. However, dolphins whistled significantly more often at the onset of approaches compared to during and after vessel approaches. Whistle rate was also significantly greater at the onset of a vessel approach than when no vessels were present. Increased whistle repetition as watercraft approach may simply reflect heightened arousal, an increased motivation for animals to come closer together, with whistles functioning to promote reunions. It may also be an effective way to compensate for signal masking, maintaining communication in a noisy environment.  相似文献

The rock shag (Phalacrocorax magellanicus) is an endemic species from southern Argentina and Chile. In Argentina, the population is distributed along the Patagonian coast in 143 small colonies (5–377 pairs). We studied colony and nest site fidelity of rock shags at Punta Loma, Patagonia, Argentina. We banded 37 adults from December 2001 to June 2003, during two breeding and two non-breeding seasons. Nest site fidelity was extremely high during consecutive breeding and also non-breeding seasons. The high percentage of banded birds residing in the colony in consecutive seasons suggests that rock shags are highly faithful to breeding sites and supports the idea of low post-breeding dispersion.  相似文献

A few nucleotide sites of nuclear exons that flank introns are often conserved. A hypothesis has suggested that these sites, called "proto-splice sites," are remnants of recognition signals for the insertion of introns in the early evolution of eukaryotic genes. This notion of proto-splice sites has been an important basis for the insertional theory of introns. This hypothesis predicts that the distribution of proto-splice sites would determine the distribution of intron phases, because the positions of introns are just a subset of the proto-splice sites. We previously tested this prediction by examining the proportions of the phases of proto-splice sites, revealing nothing in these proportion distributions similar to observed proportions of intron phases. Here, we provide a second independent test of the proto-splice site hypothesis, with regard to its prediction that the proto-splice sites would mimic intron phase correlations, using a CDS database we created from GenBank. We tested four hypothetical proto-splice sites G / G, AG / G, AG / GT, and C/AAG / R. Interestingly, while G / G and AG / GT site phase distributions are not consistent with actual introns, we observed that AG / G and C/AAG / R sites have a symmetric phase excess. However, the patterns of the excess are quite different from the actual intron phase distribution. In addition, particular amino acid repeats in proteins were found to partially contribute to the excess of symmetry at these two types of sites. The phase associations of all four sites are significantly different from those of intron phases. Furthermore, a general model of intron insertion into proto-splice sites was simulated by Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the probability that the random insertion of introns into AG / G and C/AAG / R sites could generate the observed intron phase distribution. The simulation showed that (1) no observed correlation of intron phases was statistically consistent with the phase distribution of proto-splice sites in the simulated virtual genes; (2) most conservatively, no simulation in 10,000 Monte Carlo experiments gave a pattern with an excess of symmetric (1, 1) exons larger than those of (0, 0) and (2, 2), a major statistical feature of intron phase distribution that is consistent with the directly observed cases of exon shuffling. Thus, these results reject the null hypothesis that introns are randomly inserted into preexisting proto-splice sites, as suggested by the insertional theory of introns.  相似文献

We investigated whether the specific localization of DNA replicator sites at the nuclear membrane at the end of the S phase, found in dividing animal cells and in the plantHaplopappus gracilis, applied also to other plants. We found that nuclei labelled at the nuclear periphery were observed in plants where the chromocenters are localized at the nuclear membrane. In other plants, where the chromocenters are scattered throughout the nucleus, a different pattern of labelling is observed where the silver grains are restricted to a number of distinct sites, distributed in a fashion similar to that of the chromocenters. We believe that these nuclei were replicating the chromocentric heterochromatin and so were therefore at the end of the S phase. The specific patterns of the distribution of DNA replicator sites at the end of the S phase make it possible to distinguish nuclei which are in the late S phase and thus define a specific stage of the S phase, during which only heterochromatin replication occurs.  相似文献

Tracks of pigeons, recorded with the help of GPS-receivers from two sites 30 km north and south of the Frankfurt loft, were analyzed in view of an influence of irregular fluctuations of the geomagnetic field. The data obtained were correlated with indices characterizing different aspects of these fluctuations. We found the best correlations with the index quantifying the average amplitude of the magnetic disturbance, and with an index that quantifies the average variability of the magnetic field on the day of release: stronger and more variable fluctuations lead to a counter-clockwise shift of the mean headings during the initial phase at the release site and the following departure phase, but not during the final homing phase leading to the loft. The steadiness of flight was not affected during the initial phase; however, during the later parts of the homing flight, stronger fluctuations, as well as higher variability in the magnetic field led to a marked decrease in steadiness. This continuing effect of magnetic fluctuations indicates that magnetic factors not only affect the beginning, but remain an integral part of the pigeons’ navigational processes during the entire homing flight.  相似文献

Polo-like kinases (Plks) control multiple important events during M phase progression, but little is known about their activation during the cell cycle. The activities of both mammalian Plk1 and Xenopus Plx1 peak during M phase, and this activation has been attributed to phosphorylation. However, no phosphorylation sites have previously been identified in any member of the Plk family. Here we have combined tryptic phosphopeptide mapping with mass spectrometry to identify four major phosphorylation sites in Xenopus Plx1. All four sites appear to be phosphorylated in a cell cycle-dependent manner. Phosphorylations at two sites (Ser-260 and Ser-326) most likely represent autophosphorylation events, whereas two other sites (Thr-201 and Ser-340) are targeted by upstream kinases. Several recombinant kinases were tested for their ability to phosphorylate Plx1 in vitro. Whereas xPlkk1 phosphorylated primarily Thr-10, Thr-201 was readily phosphorylated by protein kinase A, and Cdk1/cyclin B was identified as a likely kinase acting on Ser-340. Phosphorylation of Ser-340 was shown to be responsible for the retarded electrophoretic mobility of Plx1 during M phase, and phosphorylation of Thr-201 was identified as a major activating event.  相似文献
