Experiments have been made on the swarming of a number of mosquitoes, especially Culex fatigans, under laboratory conditions and the influence of light intensity, temperature, different color swarm markers; and time factors, both in regard to duration of the change of light and the time lapse between experiments, have been studied.
Résumé Des expériences sur l'essaimage des moustiques mâles (surtout Culex fatigans) ont été faites au laboratoire. La cage dans laquelle se formaient les essaims était placée dans une chambre dont l'éclairage, la température et l'humidité pouvaient être réglés.Les essaims qui comprenaient le plus grand nombre d'individus et qui duraient le plus longtemps, étaient obtenus quand le changement d'éclairement (crépuscule artificiel) durait plus de 20 minutes et quand la température était de 24–25° après une durée de plus de cinq heures depuis le dernier changement.Dans ces conditions artificielles les moustiques faisaient des essaims tous les matins et tous les soirs. Le commencement de l'essaimage le soir, et sa fin le matin avaient lieu à un même éclairement (1,6 log lux). Si l'éclairement était tenu inférieur à 1,6 log lux, les essaims duraient toute la nuit jusqu'à ce que la lumière soit relevée.Quelques observations sur Culex nigripalpus et Anopheles quadrimaculatus indiquent que les déliminations de l'éclairement permettent l'essaimage. Chez. C. nigripalpus ils étaient presque les mêmes que celles de Culex fatigans. Psorophora howardii et Aëdes taeniorhynchus ne font pas d'essaimage dans la petite cage mais la dernière espèce fait un essaim dans une cage plus grande après un éclairement subit.

Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae) is the major Afro‐tropical vector of malaria. Novel strategies proposed for the elimination and eradication of this mosquito vector are based on the use of genetic approaches, such as the sterile insect technique (SIT). These approaches rely on the ability of released males to mate with wild females, and depend on the application of effective protocols to assess the swarming and mating behaviours of laboratory‐reared insects prior to their release. The present study evaluated whether large semi‐field enclosures can be utilized to study the ability of males from a laboratory colony to respond to natural environmental stimuli and initiate normal mating behaviour. Laboratory‐reared males exhibited spatiotemporally consistent swarming behaviour within the study enclosures. Swarm initiation, peak and termination time closely tracked sunset. Comparable insemination rates were observed in females captured in copula in the semi‐field cages relative to females in small laboratory cages. Oviposition rates after blood feeding were also similar to those observed in laboratory settings. The data suggest that outdoor enclosures are suitable for studying swarming and mating in laboratory‐bred males in field‐like settings, providing an important reference for future studies aimed at assessing the comparative mating ability of strains for SIT and other vector control strategies.  相似文献

Mosquitoes of various species mate in swarms comprised of tens of thousands of flying males. In this study, we examined Aedes aegypti swarming behavior and identified associated chemical cues. Novel evidence is provided that Ae. aegypti females aggregate by means of olfactory cues, such as aggregation pheromones. Isolation of Ae. aegypti aggregation pheromones was achieved by aeration of confined mosquitoes and collection of associated volatiles by glass filters. The collected volatiles were identified through gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). Three aggregation pheromones were collected and identified as 2,6,6‐trimethylcyclohex‐2‐ene‐1,4‐dione (ketoisophorone) (CAS# 1125–21–9, tR = 18.75), 2,2,6‐trimethylcyclohexane‐1,4‐dione (the saturated analog of ketoisophorone) (CAS# 20547–99–3, tR = 20.05), and 1‐(4‐ethylphenyl) ethanone (CAS# 937–30–4, tR = 24.22). Our biological studies revealed that the identified compounds stimulated mosquito behavior under laboratory conditions. The mechanism of mosquito swarm formation is discussed in light of our behavioral study findings. A preliminary field trial demonstrated the potential application of the isolated aggregation pheromones in controlling Ae. aegypti.  相似文献

ipid reserves of bait-caught female Ae.cantans and Ae.punctor mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were significantly higher than in teneral females. Female Ae.cantans given access to 10% w/v sucrose solution post-emergence showed an ability to synthesize lipid and, after 192 h, they were willing to take a bloodmeal from a human volunteer. At this point, mean lipid reserves were not significantly different from mean lipid reserves of bait-caught females. Prior to 192 h, females would not take a bloodmeal and lipid reserves were significantly lower than in bait-caught females. Female Ae.punctor given access to 10% w/v sucrose solution post-emergence also showed an ability to synthesize lipid. Females of this species were willing to feed from a human host after only 48 h, at which point lipid content was not significantly different from that in bait-caught females. The level of lipid reserves in females coming to bait differs significantly between species: Ae.cantans has lipid reserves approximately double those of Ae.punctor . In addition, Ae.punctor is able to synthesize lipid to a level comparable with that found in bait-caught females after only 24 h, whilst it takes 192 h for Ae.cantans females to synthesize the amount of lipid found in host-seeking females, when allowed free access to sugar. Physiological differences in lipid synthesis and the level of lipid reserves required may therefore explain the differences observed between the species in the time taken to initiate host seeking.  相似文献

The mosquito Aedes pseudoscutellaris (Theobald), a member of the Aedes (Stegomyia) scutellaris complex (Diptera: Culicidae), is an important vector of subperiodic Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold) (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), causing human lymphatic filariasis, on South Pacific islands. Maternal inheritance of filarial susceptibility in the complex has previously been asserted, and larval tetracycline treatment reduced susceptibility; the maternally inherited Wolbachia in these mosquitoes were suggested to be responsible. To investigate the relationship of these two factors, we eliminated Wolbachia from a strain of Ae. pseudoscutellaris by tetracycline treatment, and tested filarial susceptibility of the adult female mosquitoes using Brugia pahangi (Edeson & Buckley). Filarial susceptibility was not significantly different in Wolbachia-free and infected lines of Ae. pseudoscutellaris, suggesting that the Wolbachia in these mosquitoes do not influence vector competence. Crosses between Wolbachia-infected males and uninfected females of Ae. pseudoscutellaris showed cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), i.e. no eggs hatched, unaffected by larval crowding or restricted nutrient availability, whereas these factors are known to affect CI in Drosophila simulans. Reciprocal crosses between Ae. pseudoscutellaris and Ae. katherinensis Woodhill produced no progeny, even when both parents were Wolbachia-free, suggesting that nuclear factors are responsible for this interspecific sterility.  相似文献

Males ofChironomus yoshimatsui Martin et Sublette swarm at dusk, and copulate with females entering the swarm. It is likely in this species that, by restricting the time and place, swarming has the function of increasing the probability of the encounter between a sexually active male and a receptive female in the air. It is necessary that the timing of females taking wing coincides with that of males swarming. Field observations on swarming and mating from March to November showed that swarms and copulations occurred under lighter conditions at lower temperatures and under darker conditions at higher ones. It was suggested that both sexes may have a similar mechanism, depending on the temperature conditions, regulating the timing of taking wing.  相似文献

Only clear cloacal fluid was eliminated during the first 30–60 min after emergence of feeding on human blood. Neither meconium nor blood was voided. More liquid was excreted after withdrawing blood than after ecdysis, but the pattern of emission was the same, in that fluid was ejected rapidly only or mostly over the first 10–15 min after these events. Diuresis was not exhibited after adults fed on either sucrose or fructose. Injury prevents the release of the diuretic hormone.  相似文献

Abstract Larval competition is common in container‐breeding mosquitoes. The impact of competition on larval growth has been thoroughly examined and findings that larval competition can lead to density‐dependent effects on adult body size have been documented. The effects of larval competition on adult longevity have been less well explored. The effects of intraspecific larval densities on the longevity of adults maintained under relatively harsh environmental conditions were tested in the laboratory by measuring the longevity of adult Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) that had been reared under a range of larval densities and subsequently maintained in high‐ or low‐humidity regimes (85% or 35% relative humidity [RH], respectively) as adults. We found significant negative effects of competition on adult longevity in Ae. aegypti, but not in Ae. albopictus. Multivariate analysis of variance suggested that the negative effect of the larval environment on the longevity of Ae. aegypti adults was most strongly associated with increased development time and decreased wing length as adults. Understanding how larval competition affects adult longevity under a range of environmental conditions is important in establishing the relationship between models of mosquito population regulation and epidemiological models of vector‐borne disease transmission.  相似文献

Floodwater mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are associated with periodically flooded wet meadows, marshes, and swamps in floodplains of major rivers worldwide, and their larvae are abundant in the shallow parts of flooded areas. The nuisance caused by the blood‐seeking adult female mosquitoes motivates mosquito control. Larviciding with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis is considered the most environmentally safe method. However, some concern has been raised whether aquatic predatory insects could be indirectly affected by this reduction in a potential vital prey. Top predators in the temporary wetlands in the River Dalälven floodplains are diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), and Aedes sticticus and Ae. vexans are the target species for mosquito control. For detailed studies on this aquatic predator–prey system, we developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for detection of mosquito DNA in the guts of medium‐sized diving beetles. Primers were designed for amplifying short mitochondrial DNA fragments of the cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans, respectively. Primer specificity was confirmed and half‐life detectability of Ae. sticticus DNA in diving beetle guts was derived from a feeding and digestion experiment. The Ae. sticticus DNA within diving beetle guts was detected up to 12 h postfeeding, and half‐life detectability was estimated to 5.6 h. In addition, field caught diving beetles were screened for Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans DNA and in 14% of the diving beetles one or both mosquito species were detected, showing that these mosquito species are utilized as food by the diving beetles.  相似文献

Mosquitoes are vectors of major diseases such as dengue fever and malaria. Mass drug administration of endectocides to humans and livestock is a promising complementary approach to current insecticide-based vector control measures. The aim of this study was to establish an insect model for pharmacokinetic and drug-drug interaction studies to develop sustainable endectocides for vector control. Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were fed with human blood containing either ivermectin alone or ivermectin in combination with ketoconazole, rifampicin, ritonavir, or piperonyl butoxide. Drug concentrations were quantified by LC-MS/MS at selected time points post-feeding. Primary pharmacokinetic parameters and extent of drug-drug interactions were calculated by pharmacometric modelling. Lastly, the drug effect of the treatments was examined. The mosquitoes could be dosed with a high precision (%CV: ≤13.4%) over a range of 0.01–1 μg/ml ivermectin without showing saturation (R2: 0.99). The kinetics of ivermectin were characterised by an initial lag phase of 18.5 h (CI90%: 17.0–19.8 h) followed by a slow zero-order elimination rate of 5.5 pg/h (CI90%: 5.1–5.9 pg/h). By contrast, ketoconazole, ritonavir, and piperonyl butoxide were immediately excreted following first order elimination, whereas rifampicin accumulated over days in the mosquitoes. Ritonavir increased the lag phase of ivermectin by 11.4 h (CI90%: 8.7–14.2 h) resulting in an increased exposure (+29%) and an enhanced mosquitocidal effect. In summary, this study shows that the pharmacokinetics of drugs can be investigated and modulated in an Ae. aegypti animal model. This may help in the development of novel vector-control interventions and further our understanding of toxicology in arthropods.  相似文献

To study the dispersal of dengue vector mosquitoes in Singapore, females of Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) were fed blood containing rubidium (Rb), which was detectable in their eggs by means of Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (GFAAS). Laboratory calibration of the Rb reading, for a range of egg numbers from Rb-fed females, indicated a reasonably linear relationship and an unequivocal distinction between results with zero and one marked egg. Rb-marked female Aedes mosquitoes aged 3-5 days were released in semi-rural and urbanized parts of Singapore, with an array of ovitraps extending to a radius of 320 m from the release point. Subsequently, Rb-marked Aedes eggs were detected throughout the array, with similar distributions on each of the 4 days after release. More Rb was detected nearer the release point. However, when correction was made for the greater areas of zones further from the release point (and therefore presumably existence of more alternative oviposition sites), there were no significant differences in the numbers of marked eggs per ovitrap in the zones nearer or further from the release points. It is concluded that females of both these Aedes (Stegomyia) species could disperse easily and quickly throughout areas of radius 320 m in search of oviposition sites. This contrasts with the general belief that Ae. aegypti seldom flies more than 50 m and that control operations can safely be based on such an assumption. Releases on level 12 of a 21-storey apartment block, with ovitraps on each storey, showed similar easy and rapid dispersal to the top and bottom of the block.  相似文献

Chromosomes from gonads of 14–24 h old pupae of nine species of Stegomyia mosquitoes have been examined using the Giemsa C-banding technique. The species studied were Aedes albopictus, A. polynesienis, A. scutellaris, A. alcasidi, A. seatoi, A. pseudalbopictus, A. melallicus, A. annandalei and A. vittatus. The diploid chromosome number of all species is six. All species possess C-bands in the centromeric regions of each of the three pairs of chromosomes. Besides, an intercalary C-band is present on the female determining (=m) chromosome but absent from the male—determining (= M) chromosome of all species except A. vittatus. In A. vittatus, the m and M chromosomes possess a terminal C-band. Thus, the nine species of Aedes analysed showed two distinct patterns of C-banding. —The evolution of heterochromatin patterns in various species is also discussed. The Giemsa C-banding technique should prove useful in studies of chromosomal speciation in culicine mosquitoes.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Hypotheses about declining populations of container-inhabiting Aedes mosquitoes following the invasion by additional species were tested.
2. The larval competition hypothesis was studied experimentally in pure and mixed cultures of Aedes aegypti (L.), A.albopictus (Skuse) and A.triseriatus (Say). The experiments used decomposing leaf litter in the laboratory, as opposed to most previous research which used non-natural food.
3. Resistance to starvation is introduced as a new measure of larval performance and competitiveness. The hypothesis is that more successful larvae store larger energy reserves and resist the lack of food longer.
4. Contrary to previous research showing better performance of A.aegypti in mixed cultures, A.albopictus developed faster and had greater survival when natural food was used.
5. Resistance to starvation was greater in the better performing species (i.e. A.aegypti with non-natural food and A.albopictus with leaf litter). Oxygen consumption by starved larvae was similar in the three container species, and in the ground-water mosquito, A.taeniorhynchus (Wied.), whose resistance to starvation was comparatively very low.  相似文献
