UVirradiation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the laboratory can producesmall, labile organic compounds utilizable by microbes, but few studies haveattempted to document this process in situ. 13Cnuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to examine the bulk chemicalcomposition of natural and laboratory-irradiated high-molecular-weight DOC(HMW-DOC) from shaded (150 mol m–2s–1 average light in surface water) and open (1500mol m–2 s–1) field sitesoverone and a half years. 13C NMR revealed only small differences incarbon functional groups between laboratory irradiated and non-irradiatedHMW-DOC. However, bacterial protein productivity per cell (BPP) was enhanced innaturally irradiated samples of HMW-DOC in a field mesocosm experiment (p <0.05), suggesting that bacterial growth was enhanced by photochemicalproductionof labile DOC substrates. Absorbance characteristics such as spectral slope, absorbance at 350 nm, and the absorbance ratio 250nm/365 nm revealed that HMW-DOC was photoreactive, yetno differences in these values were found between samples irradiated with andwithout UV-B. In experiments conducted with simulated solar radiation in thelaboratory and with natural light in the field mesocosm experiment, UV-A(320–400 nm) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR;400–700 nm) were more effective than UV-B (280–320nm) in HMW-DOC photolysis.  相似文献

Compared to marine research, there have been few attempts to search for general predictive patterns in stable isotope ratios across lakes. Previous work has determined, however, that the 13C values of both littoral epilithon and pelagic zooplankton decrease with increasing concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in boreal forest lakes. Despite a substantial contribution of allochthonous carbon to fuelling littoral foodwebs in northwestern Ontario, a survey of 12 lakes showed that enough autochthonous carbon must be assimilated by leeches (Macrodella decora, Percymoorensis mannoratis) to demonstrate inverse relationships between leech 13C and lake DOC. Establishing such baseline empirical relationships between limnological variables and organism 13C will enable inter-lake comparisons, and is a maturing direction in freshwater isotope ecology.  相似文献

Four whole-lake inorganic 13C addition experiments were conducted in lakes of differing trophic status. Inorganic 13C addition enriched algal carbon in 13C and changed the C-DOC by +1.5‰ to +9.5‰, depending on the specific lake. This change in C-DOC represented a significant input of algal DOC that was not completely consumed by bacteria. We modeled the dynamics in C-DOC to estimate the fluxes of algal and terrestrial carbon to and from the DOC pool, and determine the composition of the standing stock. Two experiments in lightly stained, oligotrophic lakes indicated that algal production was the source of about 20% of the DOC pool. In the following year, the experiment was repeated in one of these lakes under conditions of nutrient enrichment, and in a third, more humic lake. Algal contributions to the DOC pool were 40% in the nutrient enriched lake and 5% in the more humic lake. Spectroscopic and elemental analyses corroborated the presence of increased algal DOC in the nutrient enriched lake. Natural abundance measurements of the C of DOC in 32 lakes also revealed the dual contributions of both terrestrial and algal carbon to DOC. From these results, we suggest an approach for inferring the contribution of algal and terrestrial DOC using easily measurable parameters.  相似文献

We have evaluated photoeffects of UV-B, UV-A and PAR radiation on dissolved organic matter (DOM). Photochemical production of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was measured in sterile lake water from Sweden and Brazil after 6 hours of sun exposure. Tubes were exposed to four solar radiation regimes: Full-radiation, Full-radiation minus UV-B, Full-radiation minus UV-B and UV-A (PAR) and darkness. In both areas, lakes with most DOC (varying between 3 and 40 mg C l-1) were highly humic, resulting in high UV-B attenuation coefficients (Kd = 5–466 m-1). Under Full-radiation, photooxidative DIC-production varied from 0.09 to 1.7 mg C l-1per 6 h, without UV-B from 0.07 to 1.4 mg C l-1 and with PAR only from 0.02 to 0.7 mg C l-1. UV-B radiation explains a minor part (17%) of the photoooxidative DIC-production, while UV-A and PAR have larger effects (39% and 44%, respectively). Photooxidation was proportional to DOC-content and DIC-production was positively related to decrease in DOC and to loss of absorbance at 250 nm. There was no significant difference in DOC and radiation normalized DIC-production between Swedish and Brazilian lakes. The UV-B dose during incubations was approximately 3 times higher in Brazil compared to Sweden, while UV-A and PAR doses were similar. We conclude that DOC from tropical and temperate freshwaters do not seem to differ with respect to sensitivity to photooxidation.  相似文献

The relative contribution of autotrophic carbon sources (aquatic macrophytes, flooded forest, phytoplankton) for heterotrophic bacterioplankton was evaluated in a floodplain lake of the Central Amazon. Stable carbon isotopes (13C) were used as tracers. Values of 13C of different autotrophic sources were compared to those of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and those of bacterially produced CO2.The percentage of carbon derived from C4 macrophytes for bacterially produced CO2 was the highest, on average 89%. The average 13C value of CO2 from bacterial respiration was –18.5 ± 3.3. Considering a fractionation of CO2 of 3 by bacterial respiration, 13C value was –15.5, near C4 macrophyte 13C value (–13.1).The average value of total DOC 13C was –26.8 ± 2.4. The percentage of C4 macrophytes carbon for total DOC was on average 17%. Considering that bacteria consume mainly carbon from macrophytes, the dominance of C3 plants for total DOC probably reflects a faster consumption of the former source, rather than a major contribution of the latter source.Heterotrophic bacterioplankton in the floodplain may be an important link in the aquatic food web, transferring the carbon from C4 macrophytes to the consumers.  相似文献

We measured the concentrations and isotopic values (14C and 13C) of dissolved inorganic, dissolved organic, and particulate organic carbon (DIC, DOC, and POC, respectively) in the Parker River watershed and estuary in Massachusetts, USA, to determine the age of carbon (C) entering the estuary and how estuarine processing affects the quantity and apparent age of C transported to the Gulf of Maine. The watershed measurements indicated the transport of 14C-enriched modern DIC and DOC and variably aged POC from the watershed to the estuary. The transport of organic matter from the watershed was dominated by DOC transport, with POC making up less than 10% of the total. Surveys within the watershed aimed at determining which land-use type dominated the DOC export indicated that wetlands, although they made up only around 20% of the land use, could be responsible for approximately 75% of the DOC export. We therefore conclude that the wetland land uses of the Parker River watershed are exporting mainly 14C-enriched modern DOC. DIC isotopes indicate that the source of DIC in the Parker River watershed is dominated by the weathering of noncarbonate parent material by 14C-enriched carbon dioxide (CO2) originating from the respiration of young organic matter in soils. Transects in the estuary displayed net additions of all C species. For DOC and DIC, the export of this internally added DOC and DIC was approximately equal to the amount being exported from the watershed, showing the importance of focusing on estuaries when estimating the export of C to the coastal ocean. With respect to DIC, the total input is even larger when the atmospheric exchange of excess pCO2 is calculated. The 14C-DOC and 14C-DIC transects indicate that the internally added DOC and DIC is 14C-enriched modern material. The source of this material is the fringing marshes and estuarine phytoplankton, with the relative importance of these two sources changing over time. Taken together, the bulk C and 14C measurements show that the estuary is adding significant quantities of young DOC despite the presence of vast quantities of old marsh peat flanking the entire estuary. Furthermore, the DIC data indicate that 14C-enriched modern material is what is fueling the majority of heterotrophic respiration within the system.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on hypolimnetic metabolism (accumulation of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and methane (CH4)) in 21 lakes across a gradient of DOC concentrations (308 to 1540 mol C L–1). The highly colored nature of the DOC in these lakes suggests it is mostly of terrestrial origin. Hypolimnetic methane accumulation was positively correlated with epilimnetic DOC concentration (Spearman rank correlation = 0.67; p < 0.01), an indicator of allochthonous DOC inputs, but not with photic zone chlorophyll a concentration (Spearman rank correlation = 0.30; p = 0.22). Hypolimnetic DOC concentrations declined in 19 of 21 lakes during the stratified period at rates that ranged from 0.06 to 53.9 mmol m–2 d–1. The hypolimnetic accumulation of DIC + CH4 was positively correlated with, and, in most cases of comparable magnitude to, this DOC decline suggesting that DOC was an important substrate for hypolimnetic metabolism. The percentage of surface irradiance reaching the thermocline was lower in high DOC lakes (0.3%) than in low DOC lakes (6%), reducing hypolimnetic photosynthesis (as measured by the depth and magnitude of the deep dissolved oxygen maxima) in the high DOC lakes. In June, the hypolimnia of lakes with < 400 mol L–1 DOC had high concentrations of dissolved oxygen and no CH4, while the hypolimnia of lakes with DOC > 800 mol L–1 were completely anoxic and often had high CH4 concentrations. Thus, DOC affects hypolimnetic metabolism via multiple pathways: DOC was significant in supporting hypolimnetic metabolism; and at high concentrations depressed photosynthesis (and therefore oxygen production and DIC consumption) in the hypolimnion.  相似文献

A combination of stable isotope studies and 14Cdating were used to identify the main sources andprocesses controlling streamwater DOC and TIC in atemperate non-forested watershed. 13Cvalues for terrestrial (–24.9 to –29.1) and aquatic(–30.5 to –33.5) plants were similar to valuesreported in the literature for similar ecosystems.13C values for DOC in soil solution andstreamwater were consistent with soil and terrestrialvegetation, indicating that the terrestrial ecosystemis the dominant source of aquatic DOC in thiswatershed. 13C values of soil atmosphereCO2 (–17.2 to –25.2) were slightly lessnegative than would be expected for production viaaerobic soil microbial decomposition and rootrespiration. There was a close correspondence between13C values (–15.5 to –21.5) forstreamwater TIC and soil atmospheric CO2 in thecentral part of the catchment where the stream drainsCO2-rich peats. 14C dating showed thatalthough peat has been accumulating in the watershedfor at least 2700 years, DOC in soil pore water andstreamwater contains carbon of predominantly recentorigin (post-AD 1955).  相似文献

The amount, chemical composition, and source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), together with in situ ultraviolet (UV-B) attenuation, were measured at 1–2 week intervals throughout the summers of 1999, 2000, and 2001 at four sites in Rocky Mountain National Park (Colorado). Eight additional sites, four in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park/John Muir Wilderness (California) and four in Glacier National Park (Montana), were sampled during the summer of 2000. Attenuation of UV-B was significantly related to DOC concentrations over the three years in Rocky Mountain (R2 = 0.39, F = 25.71, P < 0.0001) and across all parks in 2000 (R2 = 0.44, F = 38.25, P < 0.0001). The relatively low R2 values, however, reflect significant temporal and spatial variability in the specific attenuation per unit DOC. Fluorescence analysis of the fulvic acid DOC fraction (roughly 600–2,000 Daltons) indicated that the source of DOC significantly affected the attenuation of UV-B. Sites in Sequoia–Kings Canyon were characterized by DOC derived primarily from algal sources and showed much deeper UV-B penetration, whereas sites in Glacier and Rocky Mountain contained a mix of algal and terrestrial DOC-dominated sites, with more terrestrially dominated sites characterized by greater UV-B attenuation per unit DOC. In general, site characteristics that promoted the accumulation of terrestrially derived DOC showed greater attenuation of UV-B per unit DOC; however, catchment vegetation and soil characteristics, precipitation, and local hydrology interacted to make it difficult to predict potential exposure from DOC concentrations.  相似文献

Surface waters in the Florida Everglades contain high levels ofdissolved organic carbon (DOC) compounds. 13C values of DOCsamples collected from the northern Everglades indicate that less than about23%of the DOC was derived from sugarcane (the dominant agricultural crop in thearea), and the amount of DOC from sugarcane was greater during the dry period. Most of the DOC (> 50%) in the northern Everglades was in the low molecularweight (< 1000 Dalton) fraction (LMW-DOC). The relative amount of highmolecular weight DOC (HMW-DOC) was higher in the wet period than in the dryperiod. Radiocarbon ages of the DOC ranged from > modern toabout 2400 years B.P., indicating that DOC was derived from both historic peatdeposits and modern vegetation. At each site, the HMW-DOC had older radiocarbonages than the LMW-DOC, and therefore contained a greater fraction of DOCderivedfrom the historic peat deposits. It appears that at least some of the old DOCcompounds from the historic peat deposits were decomposed during theirresidencein the surface water system in the northern Everglades, and the LMW-DOC wasmoremicrobially labile than the HMW-DOC. Our analysis suggests that accelerateddecomposition of organic matter in the historic peat deposits (due to land-usechange) could be a significant source of DOC and nutrients in the northernEverglades. Our data also suggest that the radiocarbon signature of DOC couldbeused as a sensitive indicator of the overall effectiveness of a wetlandrestoration project.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated, in both herbaceous and woody species, that tissue hydration resulting from exposure to drought isless pronounced if plants are concurrently exposed to ultraviolet-Bradiation (UV-B). An explanation for the mechanisms underlyingthis phenomenon has been elusive. Arabidopsis thaliana(L.) Heynh.genotypes, defective in specific defences against UV-B exposure, may permit more insightful study of drought-UV-B interactionsthan is possible with genetically uniform plants. Arabidopsishas a rosette stature and has predominantly abaxial stomata. Thus, it is difficult to investigate its stomatal behaviourand gas exchange using conventional techniques and instrumentation. In this study, the relative abundance of13C and12C in leaf tissue(13C) was used as a means of determining water use efficiency(WUE) and the relative balance, at the site of carbon fixation, between CO2supply and demand. UV-B insensitive (L er) and sensitive(fah1)Arabidopsis genotypes were raised in a growth chamberand exposed to 6 kJ m-2 d-1UV-B irradiation and subjected todrought. In both genotypes, leaf desiccation was less pronouncedthan that of control plants that were subjected to drought butnot exposed to UV-B. The relatively low (more negative) leaf13C values (indicating low WUE), but high dry matter productionof the UV-B exposed plants suggest that their higher leaf watercontent was not primarily due to stomatal closure. We proposethat the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of higher leafwater content involved UV-B and water stress induced biosynthesisof stress proteins and compatible osmolytes. This study presents data of in situ measurements of inorganic carbon assimilation by phytoplankton communities of the St Lawrence estuary during the end of summer 1982. We used carboxylase activity measurements (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, carboxylases) and the 13C/12C ratio of phytoplankton organic carbon, expressed as 13C, to study patterns of assimilation. Upper estuary phytoplankton communities showed a smaller turn-over rate in carbon assimilation than lower estuary phytoplankton communities. Carbon assimilation was limited by light intensity in the upper estuary and by CO2 availability in the lower estuary. In the St Lawrence estuary, stable carbon isotope ratios of phytoplankton organic carbon seemed to be controlled by inorganic carbon availability rather than by phytoplankton metabolism.  相似文献

Semi-labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays an important role in the transport and hypolimnetic remineralization of carbon in large freshwater lakes. However, sources of semi-labile DOC in lakes remain unclear. This study used a carbon stable isotope approach to examine relative contributions of autochthonous and allochthonous sources to semi-labile DOC. Vertical and seasonal variations in the concentration and carbon stable isotope ratio (δ13C) of DOC were determined in large (surface area 674 km2; maximum depth 104 m), monomictic Lake Biwa. A sharp vertical gradient of δ13C of DOC (δ13C-DOC) during the stratification period [mean ± standard error (SE) −25.5 ± 0.1 and −26.0 ± 0.0‰ in the epi- and hypolimnion, respectively] indicated the accumulation of 13C-rich DOC in the epilimnion. Vertical mixing explained the intermediate values of δ13C-DOC (−25.7 ± 0.0‰) measured throughout the water column during the overturn period. Both DOC concentration and δ13C-DOC decreased in the hypolimnion during stratification, indicating selective remineralization of 13C-rich DOC. Using a two-component mixing model, we estimated the δ13C value of semi-labile DOC to be −22.2 ± 0.3‰, which was close to the δ13C of particulate organic carbon collected in the epilimnion during productive seasons (−22.7 ± 0.7‰) but much higher than the δ13C-DOC in river waters (−26.5 ± 0.1‰). Semi-labile DOC appeared to be mainly autochthonous in origin, produced by planktonic communities during productive seasons. The spatiotemporal uncoupling between production and remineralization of semi-labile DOC implies that hypolimnetic oxygen consumption may be affected by pelagic primary production during productive seasons of the preceding year.  相似文献

Wetlands across the Canadian prairies are typically shallow (<1.0 m) and exhibit high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations (>10 mg l–1). Studies have shown that DOC in such shallow wetlands is not as reliable an indicator of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) attenuation as it is in clearwater. Changes in DOC character and composition as a result of sunlight exposure might provide a reasonable explanation for this observation. To test this, we investigated seasonal changes in DOC optical and chemical properties in a shallow prairie wetland over a 2-year period. Although DOC concentration increased at least two-fold from spring until fall, DOC specific absorption (at 350 nm) and fluorescence decreased by 30 and 32%, respectively, for the same period. In both years, seasonal decreases in DOC molecular weight and size (from measurements of tangential filtration and mass electrospray mass spectrometry) were reflected in concomitant increases in spectral slope. 13C NMR analysis of DOC isolated on XAD-8 resins revealed a 49% decrease in aromatic moieties when spring values were compared to those in the fall. As well, 13C signatures of this isolated DOC became heavier seasonally. In a short term photodegradation experiment (6 days) we noted a 47% decline in DOC specific absorption coefficients at 350 nm and a 15% increase in spectral slope when water exposed to the total light spectrum was compared to that of a dark control. Taken together, all of these observations were consistent with the occurrence of seasonal DOC photodegradation in shallow prairie wetlands and underlined the importance of this process in shaping DOC character and composition in these hydrologically dynamic systems. Our data also indicates that constant mixing and shallow depths in these wetlands were factors which enhanced DOC photodegradation. Although the high DOC concentrations of prairie wetlands should theoretically offer protection for their biota, seasonal photodegradation of DOC means that these systems may not be as protected as their high DOC concentrations suggest.  相似文献

Paleoecological and geomorphological studies indicate that, during the middle Holocene, there was a predominance of drier conditions with grassy savannahs replacing forests across the South American continent. Modern savannahs are composed mainly of C4 plants and soils developed under this type of vegetation show enrichment in 13C compared to soils under C3 vegetation cover. If soils contain stabilized organic matter formed in the middle Holocene, we hypothesize that former C4 vegetation would be evidenced by a large enrichment of 13C in soil organic matter (SOM). We investigate this possibility examining the depth variation of carbon isotopic composition in 21 soil profiles collected by different researchers at 14 different sites in Brazil. Of these, profiles from only three sites showed a marked increase of 13C with depth (9–10 enrichment in 13C difference between the surface soil and deepest depth); two sites showed intermediate enrichment (4–5), and nine sites showed a small enrichment of approximatelly 2.5. The majority of sites showing all-C3 derived SOM were in the Amazon region. Possible causes for the absence of a large 13C enrichment with depth are: (1) dominance of C3 rather than C4 grasses in mid-Holocene savannahas, (2) soil profiles did not preserve organic matter derived from mid-Holocene plants, (3) the retreat of forest areas did not occur on a regional scale, but was a much more localized phenomenon.  相似文献

Boreal regions store most of the global terrestrial carbon, which can be transferred as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to inland waters with implications for both aquatic ecology and carbon budgets. Headwater riparian zones (RZ) are important sources of DOC, and often just a narrow ‘dominant source layer’ (DSL) within the riparian profile is responsible for most of the DOC export. Two important questions arise: how long boreal RZ could sustain lateral DOC fluxes as the sole source of exported carbon and how its hydromorphological variability influences this role. We estimate theoretical turnover times by comparing carbon pools and lateral exports in the DSL of 13 riparian profiles distributed over a 69 km2 catchment in northern Sweden. The thickness of the DSL was 36 ± 18 (average ± SD) cm. Thus, only about one‐third of the 1‐m‐deep riparian profile contributed 90% of the lateral DOC flux. The 13 RZ exported 8.7 ± 6.5 g C m?2 year?1, covering the whole range of boreal stream DOC exports. The variation could be explained by local hydromorphological characteristics including RZ width (R2 = 0.90). The estimated theoretical turnover times were hundreds to a few thousands of years, that is there is a potential long‐lasting supply of DOC. Estimates of net ecosystem production in the RZ suggest that lateral fluxes, including both organic and inorganic C, could be maintained without drawing down the riparian pools. This was supported by measurements of stream DO14C that indicated modern carbon as the predominant fraction exported, including streams disturbed by ditching. The transfer of DOC into boreal inland waters from new and old carbon sources has a major influence on surface water quality and global carbon balances. This study highlights the importance of local variations in RZ hydromorphology and DSL extent for future DOC fluxes under a changing climate.  相似文献

1. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was determined for a range of lakes of varying conductivity (30–4000 μS cm−1) in the low Arctic of SW Greenland. DOC concentration range from <1 to >100 mg C L−1, occasionally approaching 200 mg C L−1 in meromictic, oligosaline lakes. DOC concentration was strongly related to [log10] conductivity and total nitrogen. 2. Peak DOC concentrations (>80 mg L−1) occur in lakes located approximately 50 km from the present ice sheet margin, a zone of low effective precipitation; evaporative concentration is the first‐order control on DOC concentration. Lakes at the coast and closer to the ice margin had lower DOC concentrations (<20 mg C L−1). Local factors, notably the presence or absence of an outflow and catchment morphometry, resulted in considerable variability in concentration (20–100 mg C L−1) within the area of maximum concentration around 51°W. 3. Despite their high DOC concentration, these lakes are essentially colourless. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) absorption (a375) was low in most lakes (<10 m−1) with maximum values (approximately 20 m−1) occurring in one humic‐stained lake in the area. Absorption values corrected for DOC concentration () were very low (<0.6 m2 g−1 C) for all lakes apart from those at the coast, perhaps reflecting greater allochthonous inputs at these sites. 4. S, the spectral slope coefficient, ranged from 16 to 27 μm−1 and was weakly correlated with DOC concentration. Both a375 and S showed similar distribution patterns along the sampling gradient as did DOC, with maximum values at approximately 51°W. High and low S may indicate fresher, more rapidly flushed, systems with less degraded DOM or greater inputs from their catchments. 5. The lakes closer to the head of the fjord with higher conductivity, had low (<0.2 m2 g−1 C) and high S (>21 μm−1) and this may reflect increasingly longer lake water residence times, greater DOM age and photochemical degradation.  相似文献

Ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–320-nm wavelengths) doses were estimated for 1024 wetlands in six national parks: Acadia (Acadia), Glacier (Glacier), Great Smoky Mountains (Smoky), Olympic (Olympic), Rocky Mountain (Rocky), and Sequoia/Kings Canyon (Sequoia). Estimates were made using ground-based UV-B data (Brewer spectrophotometers), solar radiation models, GIS tools, field characterization of vegetative features, and quantification of DOC concentration and spectral absorbance. UV-B dose estimates were made for the summer solstice, at a depth of 1 cm in each wetland. The mean dose across all wetlands and parks was 19.3 W-h m−2 (range of 3.4–32.1 W-h m−2). The mean dose was lowest in Acadia (13.7 W-h m−2) and highest in Rocky (24.4 W-h m−2). Doses were significantly different among all parks. These wetland doses correspond to UV-B flux of 125.0 μW cm−2 (range 21.4–194.7 μW cm−2) based on a day length, averaged among all parks, of 15.5 h. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), a key determinant of water-column UV-B flux, ranged from 0.6 (analytical detection limit) to 36.7 mg C L−1 over all wetlands and parks, and reduced potential maximal UV-B doses at 1-cm depth by 1%–87 %. DOC concentration, as well as its effect on dose, was lowest in Sequoia and highest in Acadia (DOC was equivalent in Acadia, Glacier, and Rocky). Landscape reduction of potential maximal UV-B doses ranged from zero to 77% and was lowest in Sequoia. These regional differences in UV-B wetland dose illustrate the importance of considering all aspects of exposure in evaluating the potential impact of UV-B on aquatic organisms.  相似文献

Export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from forested catchmentsis governed by competing processes of production, decomposition, sorptionand flushing. To examine the sources of DOC, carbon isotopes (14Cand 13C) were analyzed in DOC from surface waters, groundwatersand soils in a small forested catchment on the Canadian Shield in centralOntario. A significant fraction (greater than 50%) of DOCin major inflows to the lake is composed of carbon incorporated into organicmatter, solubilized and flushed into the stream within the last 40 years. Incontrast, 14C in groundwater DOC was old indicating extensiverecycling of forest floor derived organic carbon in the soil column beforeelution to groundwater in the lower B and C soil horizons. A small uplandbasin had a wide range in 14C from old groundwater values atbaseflow under dry basin conditions to relatively modern values during highflow or wetter antecedent conditions. Wetlands export mainly recently fixedcarbon with little seasonal range. DOC in streams entering the small lakemay be composed of two pools; an older recalcitrant pool delivered bygroundwater and a young labile pool derived from recent organic matter. The relative proportion of these two pools changes seasonally due thechanges in the water flowpaths and organic carbon dynamics. Althoughchanges in local climate (temperature and/or precipitation) may alterthe relative proportions of the old and young pools, the older pool islikely to be more refractory to sedimentation and decomposition in thelake setting. Delivery of older pool DOC from the catchment andsusceptibility of this older pool to photochemical decomposition mayconsequently be important in governing the minimum DOC concentrationlimit in lakes.  相似文献

Benthic bacterial biomass supported by streamwater dissolved organic matter   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Bacterial biomass in surface sediments of a headwater stream was measured as a function of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flux and temperature. Bacterial biomass was estimated using epifluorescence microscopic counts (EMC) and ATP determinations during exposure to streamwater containing 1,788g DOC/liter and after transfer to groundwater containing 693g DOC/liter. Numbers of bacteria and ATP concentrations averaged 1.36×109 cells and 1,064 ng per gram dry sediment, respectively, under initial DOC exposure. After transfer to low DOC water, biomass estimates dropped by 53 and 55% from EMC and ATP, respectively. The decline to a new steady state occurred within 4 days from ATP assays and within 11 days from EMC measures. A 4°C difference during these exposures had little effect on generation times. The experiment indicated that 27.59 mg/hour of natural DOC supported a steady state bacterial biomass of approximately 10g C/g dry weight of sediment (from EMC determinations). Steady state bacterial biomass estimates on sediments that were previously muffled to remove organic matter were approximately 20-fold lower. The ratio of GTPATP indicated differences in physiological condition or community composition between natural and muffled sediments.  相似文献
