The oviducts of 25 tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) were examined by using histology and scanning electron microscopy to determine oviductal functional morphology. Oviductal formation of albumen and eggshell was of particular interest. The oviduct is composed of 5 morphologically distinct regions; infundibulum, uterine tube, isthmus, uterus, and vagina. The epithelium consists of ciliated cells and microvillous secretory cells throughout the oviduct, whereas bleb secretory cells are unique to the infundibulum. The epithelium and endometrial glands of the uterine tube histologically resemble those of the avian magnum which produce egg albumen and may be functionally homologous. The isthmus is a short, nonglandular region of the oviduct and appears to contribute little to either albumen or eggshell formation. The uterus retains the eggs until oviposition and may form both the fibrous and calcareous eggshell. The endometrial glands are histologically similar to the endometrial glands of the isthmus of birds, which are known to secrete the fibers of the eggshell. These glands hypertrophy during vitellogenesis but become depleted during gravidity. The uterine epithelium may supply "plumping water" to the egg albumen as well as transport calcium ions for eggshell formation. The vagina is extremely muscular and serves as a sphincter to retain the eggs until oviposition. Sperm are found within the oviductal lumen and endometrial glands from the posterior tube to the anterior uterus throughout the reproductive cycle. This indicates sperm storage within the female tract, although the viability and reproductive significance of these sperm are unknown.  相似文献

Involvement of osteopontin in egg shell formation in the laying chicken   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Expression of the osteopontin (OPN) gene in the oviduct of the laying hen was studied. It was detected only in the egg shell gland (ESG), where massive calcification occurs. No OPN gene expression was detected in any other part of the oviduct, such as the magnum and isthmus. The OPN gene was expressed in a circadian fashion during the daily egg cycle only during the period of egg shell calcification. No OPN gene expression was detected in the ESG of a pre-laying hen before the onset of reproduction, or after forced removal of the egg close to its entrance into the ESG. OPN was found to be synthesized by the epithelial cells of the ESG lining the lumen. Upon synthesis, OPN is immediately secreted out of cells and accumulates in the egg shell. These findings demonstrate for the first time temporal and spatial association of OPN with egg shell calcification. OPN, which was found to be part of the organic matrix of the egg shell, may play an important role in egg shell calcification.  相似文献

A recent broad comparative study suggested that factors during egg formation – in particular ‘flight efficiency’, which explained only 4% of the interspecific variation – are the main forces of selection on the evolution of egg shape in birds. As an alternative, we tested whether selection during the incubation period might also influence egg shape in two taxa with a wide range of egg shapes, the alcids (Alcidae) and the penguins (Spheniscidae). To do this, we analysed data from 30 species of these two distantly related but ecologically similar bird families with egg shapes ranging from nearly spherical to the most pyriform eggs found in birds. The shape of pyriform eggs, in particular, has previously proven difficult to quantify. Using three egg‐shape indices – pointedness, polar‐asymmetry and elongation – that accurately describe the shapes of all birds’ eggs, we examined the effects of egg size, chick developmental mode, clutch size and incubation site on egg shape. Linear models that include only these factors explained 70–85% of the variation in these egg‐shape indices, with incubation site consistently explaining > 60% of the variation in shape. The five species of alcids and penguins that produce the most pyriform eggs all incubate in an upright posture on flat or sloping substrates, whereas species that incubate in a cup nest have more spherical eggs. We suggest that breeding sites and incubation posture influence the ability of parents to manipulate egg position, and thus selection acting during incubation may influence egg‐shape variation across birds as a whole.  相似文献

In vivo gene electroporation was used to examine whether or not a recombinant protein is synthesized in the chicken oviduct and subsequently secreted into eggs. A plasmid DNA containing a secretion form of the human alkaline phosphatase gene was injected into mucosa of the chicken magnum. Immediately, in vivo gene electroporation was conducted. The human alkaline phosphatase activity in the oviduct mucosa increased and reached its peak at 2 days posttransfection, followed by a sharp decrease to a negligible level at 4 days posttransfection. In the egg white, the alkaline phosphatase activity showed a similar change to that in the magnum mucosa except for a delay of 4 days. The present results imply that in vivo gene electroporation method in the oviduct may serve as a rapid production system of recombinant proteins into chicken eggs.  相似文献

Female birds of several species have control over the production of daughters and sons. However, most studies failed to find a relationship between egg size and sex. This is intriguing as adjustment of egg size would constitute a powerful tool for the female to meet different resource demands of the sexes, particularly in size dimorphic species. Our results show that, within clutches of black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) the proportion of males was positively associated with egg mass. This applied for all three laying positions, independently of the absolute egg mass. There was a significant relationship between the distribution of the sexes over the laying sequence and the egg mass change. When egg mass decreased over the sequence, first-laid eggs were male biased and last-laid eggs female biased, and vice versa. The potential adaptive value of this allocation strategy is evaluated with regard to male sensitivity to egg quality and competitive differences between the sexes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Egg volume is often calculated from length and breadth, assuming little variation in egg shape within species. However, egg shape may vary among females, over time, or within clutches. If this variation is not predictable, volume should be estimated using another method. For example, in some species, egg shape changes consistently with laying order and volume can be estimated using laying‐order specific equations. We measured the length, breadth, volume, and mass of 249 Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) eggs and regressed volume on length and breadth for first and second eggs separately. Differences between measured and calculated volume averaged <1% for both eggs. Using linear measurements, we calculated egg volume for 7085 clutches from 1983 to 2006. First and second eggs had similar calculated volumes (P > 0.05) in 19 of 24 yr; when they differed, the second egg was larger. In contrast, using single equations typically employed to compute egg volume, we erroneously concluded that first eggs were usually (20 of 24 yr) significantly larger than second eggs. Our regression equations should be applicable to other Spheniscus penguins because ratios of elongation coefficients (length divided by breadth) of first and second eggs are similar among these species. In other species of birds where egg shape changes with laying order, the volume of a sample of eggs should be measured to develop regression equations specific to the species and laying order. Slight variation in egg volume can have important evolutionary and ecological implications that would be erroneously interpreted without field tests to measure volume.  相似文献

The localization of a plasma membrane calcium pump in the oviduct of the laying hen was investigated by immunohistochemical techniques, utilizing a monoclonal antibody (5F10) produced against the human erythrocyte calcium pump. This antibody was shown to react with an epitope of the pump in oviductal tissue, and prominent staining was observed on the microvilli of the tubular gland cells of the hen shell gland (uterus) and the isthmus. The Ca2+ pump was not detectable in the infundibulum or the magnum. Calbindin-D28k, also localized by immunohistochemical means, was observed to be present in the tubular gland cells of the shell gland and the distal isthmus (adjacent to shell gland) but not in either the proximal isthmus (adjacent to the magnum), the magnum or the infundibulum. The localization of the Ca2+ pump in the oviduct corresponds to known sites of mineral deposition during egg shell formation. The distribution of calbindin-D28k differed, co-localizing with the Ca2+ pump in the shell gland and distal isthmus but not in the proximal isthmus. This might reflect a greater rate of active Ca2+ secretion in the distal isthmus and shell gland as compared to the proximal isthmus.  相似文献

The ultrastructural changes occurring in the fully functional oviduct of Isa Brown laying hens were studied during various stages of the laying cycle. Hens were killed at different positions of the egg in the oviduct. The oviduct was lined by ciliated and non-ciliated cells (also referred to as granular cells). The granular cells in the infundibulum contributed to secretion during egg formation, whereas ciliated cells showed little evidence of secretion. Ultrastructural changes were recorded in the granular and glandular cells of the distal infundibulum. In the magnum, the surface ultrastructure revealed glandular openings associated with the ciliated and granular cells. Cyclic changes were recorded in the glandular cells of the magnum. With respect to the three observed types of glands, the structure of gland type A and C cells varied at different egg positions in the oviduct, whereas type B cells represented a different type of gland cell containing amorphous secretory granules. The surface epithelium of the isthmus was also lined by mitochondrial cells. Two types of glandular cell (types 1 and 2) were recorded in the isthmus during the laying cycle. Intracisternal granules were found in type 2 cells of the isthmus. A predominance of glycogen particles occurred in the tubular shell gland. The granular cells in the shell gland contain many vacuoles. During egg formation, these vacuoles regressed following the formation of extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum; the reverse also occurred. The disintegrated material found in the vacuoles may have been derived from the disintegrating granules. The Physiology Teaching Unit, University of New England, provided financial support to K. Chousalkar for this study.  相似文献

The initial investment a female bird makes in an offspring is her production of its egg. The size of this investment can have important evolutionary consequences for both the female and her offspring. Between 2008 and 2016, we weighed 1977 tree swallow eggs freshly laid in nest boxes in west Michigan to investigate factors associated with egg mass. Breeding female age class was not associated with egg mass. Overall, eggs that hatched weighed significantly more than those that did not. An egg's mass was not associated with clutch size but increased with its position in the laying sequence. Females that bred multiple times showed high repeatability of egg mass. Mother–daughter narrow sense heritability of egg mass was low. There were statistically significant associations, both positive and negative, between female morphological characteristics and egg mass in some years but not others. Similarly, relationships between egg mass and weather conditions during egg formation were statistically significant in some years but not others. In summary, female characteristics and weather conditions were associated with tree swallow egg mass, but their influences varied yearly. These results reinforce the importance of long‐term studies for identifying the causes of selection that shape life‐history characteristics.  相似文献

1. The shape of avian eggs is often explained by involving the mechanical properties of eggshell such as resistance to breakage or invoking physiological forces operating during egg development.
2. Here we take a different approach and investigate the efficient use of space. According to this approach the optimal egg shape is the one that produces the most compact fit under the incubating parent.
3. We extend the model of Andersson (1978) and use a numerical technique to investigate egg shapes in clutches of 1 to 10 eggs. In our model the shape of eggs is described by four parameters in a two-dimensional space. These parameters are free to vary – but eggs cannot be concave.
4. The optimal egg shape for each clutch size was found by a genetic algorithm.
5. The model predicts that egg shape should depend on clutch size. In particular, if the clutch consists of one egg then this egg should be spherical; whereas in clutches of two or three eggs the eggs should be biconical. In clutches of four the eggs should be pointed. The model also predicts that in clutches of over seven eggs the optimal egg shape should be approximately spherical.
6. These predictions are valuable because they point out that some of the variation in avian egg shapes may be explained solely by the efficient use of the brood patch area of the incubating parent.  相似文献

1. The present study was carried out to investigate whether or not the rate of synthesis of total protein in various oviducal segments and ovalbumin, a major egg white protein, in the magnum fluctuated during the egg formation cycle in laying hens. 2. Synthesis of total protein and ovalbumin was measured in vivo by the incorporation of [15N]methionine after a primed continuous infusion of tracer for 3 hr. 3. Protein and ovalbumin contents in the magnum and the entire oviduct decreased sharply when an ovum moved down from the magnum to the isthmus, probably due to the secretion of egg white proteins. 4. In contrast, total protein and ovalbumin synthesis in the magnum was significantly higher when an ovum was in there than when it was in any other segments. Fluctuations of ovalbumin synthesis and total protein synthesis in the magnum were roughly parallel to those of total protein synthesis in the entire oviduct. 5. It was concluded, therefore, that the changes seen in total protein synthesis in the whole oviduct during the egg formation cycle were mainly attributable to those in magnum protein synthesis, of which a significant portion was accounted for by the synthesis of ovalbumin.  相似文献

Sulfated glycopeptides were isolated from pronaisc and tryptic digests of egg shell membranes and hen oviduct. They were precipitated by cationic detergents and separated by preparative electrophoresis, after removal of small quantities of glucuronoglycosaminoglycans detected only in the oviduct (isthmus and magnum). The principal isolated sulfated glycopeptides were divided according to increasing electrophoretic mobilities into two groups A and B. The homogeneity of the purified glycopeptides was confirmed by gel filtration and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.Glycopeptides from pool preparation of tissue are analysed and carbohydrate and amino acids average values are estimated. Hexosamines (mainly N-acetylglucosamine), hexoses (galactose, glucose, mannose) and fucose were found in Glycopeptides A. The molar ratio of hexose/hexosamine was 0.4. N-Acetylneuraminic acid and sulfate were also present in Glycopeptides A. The molar ratio of sulfate/hexosamine ranged from 0.1 to 0.25. The Glycopeptides A composition indicated the presence of chains with many glycosyl groups and a few of amino acids residues. The carbohydrate components of Glycopeptides B from egg shell membranes and magnum were found to be hexosamines (N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine in equimolar proportions), hexoses (galactose mainly and glucose), N-acetylneuraminic acid, and fucose. The molar ratio of hexose/hexosamine was 1. Sulfate was also present and the molar ratio of N-acetylneuraminic acid and sulfate to hexosamine was ranged from 0.8 to 1. The main amino acid residues in these glycopeptides were serine and threonine with destruction of these hydroxyamino acids during alkali treatment. Glycopeptides B probably consist of short carbohydrate chains, linked to the polypeptide through O-glycosidic bonds involving N-acetylgalactosamine and serine and threonine. Approximately 40% of the amino acid residues were linked to carbohydrate chains.Glycopeptides B from egg shell membranes magnum and egg white were very similar in their carbohydrate and amino acid composition and in their properties.Gylcopeptides A from egg shell membranes, isthmus and magnum showed similarities and divergences especially in the amino acid composition. These results suggest that magnum and isthmus in oviduct are both concerned with the synthesis of egg shell membrane glycoproteins.  相似文献

Numerous new fossils have driven an interest in reproduction of early birds, but direct evidence remains elusive. No Mesozoic avian eggs can be unambiguously assigned to a species, which hampers our understanding of the evolution of contact incubation, which is a defining feature of extant birds. Compared to living species, eggs of Mesozoic birds are relatively small, but whether the eggs of Mesozoic birds could actually have borne the weight of a breeding adult has not yet been investigated. We estimated maximal egg breadth for a range of Mesozoic avian taxa from the width of the pelvic canal defined by the pubic symphysis. Known elongation ratios of Mesozoic bird eggs allowed us to predict egg mass and hence the load mass an egg could endure before cracking. These values were compared to the predicted body masses of the adult birds based on skeletal remains. Based on 21 fossil species, we show that for nonornithothoracine birds body mass was 187% of the load mass of the eggs. For Enantiornithes, body mass was 127% greater than the egg load mass, but some early Cretaceous ornithuromorphs were 179% heavier than their eggs could support. Our indirect approach provides the best evidence yet that early birds could not have sat on their eggs without running the risk of causing damage. We suggest that contact incubation evolved comparatively late in birds.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity and phenotypic stability are major components of the adaptive evolution of organisms to environmental variation. The invariant two-egg clutch size of Eudyptes penguins has recently been proposed to be a unique example of a maladaptive phenotypic stability, while their egg mass is a plastic trait. We tested whether this phenotypic plasticity during reproduction might result from constraints imposed by migration (migratory carry-over effect) and breeding (due to the depletion of female body reserves). For the first time, we examined whether these constraints differ between eggs within clutches and between egg components (yolk and albumen). The interval between colony return and clutch initiation positively influenced the yolk mass, the albumen mass, and the subsequent total egg mass of first-laid eggs. This time interval had only a slight negative influence on the yolk mass of second-laid eggs and no influence on their albumen and subsequent total masses. For both eggs, female body mass at laying positively influenced albumen and total egg masses. Female investment into the entire clutch was not related to the time in the colony before laying but increased with female body mass. These novel results suggest that the unique intraclutch egg size dimorphism exhibited in Eudyptes penguins, with first-laid eggs being consistently smaller than second-laid eggs, might be due to a combination of constraints: a migratory carry-over effect on the first-laid egg and a body reserve depletion effect on the second-laid egg. Both these constraints might explain why the timing of reproduction, especially egg formation, is narrow in migratory capital breeders.  相似文献

Abstract: A new type of small, ovoid dinosaur egg, Sankofa pyrenaica oogen. nov. oosp. nov., with a prismatic type eggshell is described from upper Cretaceous (upper Campanian–Maastrichtian) deposits of the Montsec area, South Pyrenean Central Unit, Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. This egg type was sub‐vertically laid in only two rich monospecific sites of a single stratigraphic layer from coastal deposits of the Aren Formation, interpreted as an emerged beach ridge of a barrier island – lagoon depositional system. The size and shape of these eggs with their asymmetric poles are roughly similar to modern hen eggs, which is unusual in the Cretaceous fossil egg record. Its phylogenetic position clusters with bird and Troodontid eggs. A morphospace analysis of egg shapes shows the similarity of the new egg to a Campanian fossil bird egg from Argentina, both being intermediate between modern‐bird eggs and extinct nonavian theropod eggs. However, the eggshell microstructure of Sankofa pyrenaica differs from that of bird eggs in its incipient squamatic texture. It has a peculiar pattern of interlocking small crystals in the middle of the palisade layer, instead of the thick squamatic structure commonly present in modern avian eggshells. This new egg type is attributed to a small theropod, probably with a single oviduct like birds and whose mosaic distribution of features is a combination between that of birds and nonavian theropods. This enhances the arguments supporting the close phylogenetic relationships between both groups.  相似文献

Hatching failure is inversely correlated with population bottleneck size among exotic birds introduced to New Zealand, but the mechanism for this is unclear. We assess whether the bottlenecks these species experienced during their introduction have affected hatching failure through deleterious changes in egg morphology. We measured egg size and shape of 13 species that passed through bottlenecks of 11–800 individuals during their establishment in the 19th century. Eggs were also measured in the source populations ('pre-bottleneck') of each species to compare pre- and post-bottleneck egg morphology directly. Significant changes in egg volume were found in six of 13 species, with most laying smaller eggs in New Zealand. Egg shape changed in four of 13 species but there was no directional bias; two species developed more elongated eggs and two species broader eggs. There was no relationship between bottleneck size and change in egg volume, but species passing through severe bottlenecks had greater variability in egg volume and were more likely to have eggs that deviated in shape from their source populations. There was no relationship between changes in either egg volume or shape and rates of hatching failure. Further work is needed to assess whether changes in egg morphology have negative consequences on offspring fitness and whether the observed changes are the result of differing environmental conditions in the introduced range.  相似文献
