It was shown that the mean value of the heart’s chronotropic response to vestibular stimulation at different positions of the head and the duration of the sensory response (a vestibular illusion of counter-rotation) in athletes were inversely related to the relative amount of angular accelerations in exercises performed by athletes of different specializations. The strengths of the systolic blood pressure response were the same in athletes of different specializations. The strength and frequency of hand movements increased during the rotational load, and the accuracy of the reproduction of a specified effort declined; however, these changes were also unrelated to sporting specialization. In nonathletes, these parameters were reduced, the accuracy of effort being much more decreased than in athletes.  相似文献

Due to chronic dissatisfaction with body weight in youth, efforts to lose weight often lead to pathological dietary behaviours. Regular and heavy sports activity may contribute to the optimization of body weight, not only by elevating the energy utilization but also by increasing the health consciousness and the tendency to self-monitor. Research generally finds a beneficial role of extracurricular sports activity in body weight control. Therefore, we aim to analyze how regular, heavy sports activity (more precisely, competitive sports) may contribute to body weight control among two groups of youth: athletes and non-athletes. Our study was carried out using 347 adolescents; among them there were 91 athletes and 259 controls. The subjects completed self-administered questionnaires concerning their body weight control and dietary habits. We found that girls were less satisfied with their body weight and reported dieting more frequently with a greater emphasis on healthy dieting than boys. Sport influenced these strong gender differences only regarding healthy dieting, young male athletes laid a larger emphasis on healthy diets than their non-athlete counterparts, therefore their attitude became similar to that of female athletes and non-athletes. We conclude that despite the normal weight in high school students, episodes of dieting that might contribute to eating disorders were quite frequent. This was not influenced by the students' extracurricular sports activity. A greater monitoring of male athletes' and their friend's diet draw attention to the need for developing health education programs specific to boys.  相似文献

In a study of degree of lower body symmetry in 73 elite Jamaican track and field athletes we show that both their knees and ankles (but not their feet) are–on average–significantly more symmetrical than those of 116 similarly aged controls from the rural Jamaican countryside. Within the elite athletes, events ranged from the 100 to the 800 m, and knee and ankle asymmetry was lower for those running the 100 m dashes than those running the longer events with turns. Nevertheless, across all events those with more symmetrical knees and ankles (but not feet) had better results compared to international standards. Regression models considering lower body symmetry combined with gender, age and weight explain 27 to 28% of the variation in performance among athletes, with symmetry related to about 5% of this variation. Within 100 m sprinters, the results suggest that those with more symmetrical knees and ankles ran faster. Altogether, our work confirms earlier findings that knee and probably ankle symmetry are positively associated with sprinting performance, while extending these findings to elite athletes.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal parameters like step length, step frequency and ground contact time are directly related to sprinting performance. There is still a lack of knowledge, however, on how these parameters interact.Recently, various algorithms for the automatic detection of step parameters during sprint running have been presented which have been based on data from motion capture systems, video cameras, opto-electronic systems or Inertial measurement units. However, all of these methods suffer from at least one of the following shortcomings: they are (a) not applicable for more than one sprinter simultaneously, (b) only capable of capturing a small volume or (c) do not provide accurate spatial parameters. To circumvent these issues, the radio-based local position measurement system RedFIR could be used to obtain spatio-temporal information during sprinting based on lightweight transmitters attached to the athletes. To assess and optimize the accuracy of these parameters 19 100 m sprints of twelve young elite athletes (age: 16.5 ± 2.3 years) were recorded by a radio-based tracking system and a opto-electronic reference instrument. Optimal filter parameters for the step detection algorithm were obtained based on RMSE differences between estimates and reference values on an unseen test set. Attaching a transmitter above the ankle showed the best results.Bland-Altman analysis yielded 95% limits of agreement of [−14.65 cm, 15.05 cm] for step length [−0.016 s, 0.016 s] for step time and [−0.020 s, 0.028 s] for ground contact time, respectively. RMS errors smaller than 2% for step length and step time show the applicability of radio-based tracking systems to provide spatio-temporal parameters. This creates new opportunities for performance analysis that can be applied for any running discipline taking place within a stadium. Since analysis for multiple athletes is available in real-time this allows immediate feedback to coaches, athletes and media.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to use estimates of body composition from a four-component model to determine whether the density of the fat-free mass (D(FFM)) is affected by muscularity or musculoskeletal development in a heterogenous group of athletes and nonathletes. Measures of body density by hydrostatic weighing, body water by deuterium dilution, bone mineral by whole body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), total body skeletal muscle estimated from DXA, and musculoskeletal development as measured by the mesomorphy rating from the Heath-Carter anthropometric somatotype were obtained in 111 collegiate athletes (67 men and 44 women) and 61 nonathletes (24 men and 37 women). In the entire group, D(FFM) varied from 1.075 to 1.127 g/cm3 and was strongly related to the water and protein fractions of the fat-free mass (FFM; r = -0.96 and 0.89) and moderately related to the mineral fraction of the FFM (r = 0.65). Skeletal muscle (%FFM) varied from 40 to 68%, and mesomorphy varied from 1.6 to 9.6, but neither was significantly related to D(FFM) (r = 0.11 and -0.14) or to the difference between percent fat estimated from the four-component model and from densitometry (r = 0.09 and -0.16). We conclude that, in a heterogeneous group of young adult athletes and nonathletes, D(FFM) and the accuracy of estimates of body composition from body density using the Siri equation are not related to muscularity or musculoskeletal development. Athletes in selected sports may have systematic deviations in D(FFM) from the value of 1.1 g/cm3 assumed in the Siri equation, resulting in group mean errors in estimation of percent fat from densitometry of 2-5% body mass, but the cause of these deviations is complex and not simply a reflection of differences in muscularity or musculoskeletal development.  相似文献

The relationships between some parameters of electrolyte balance and blood rheological characteristics are studied in healthy young subjects and athletes. In the total group of subjects (n = 41), the viscosity of whole blood is positively correlated with the sodium ion concentration and negatively correlated with the inorganic phosphorus concentration. The blood concentration of inorganic phosphorus is increased in the athletes and is positively correlated with deformability of erythrocytes and negatively with their aggregability. The serum concentration of potassium ions is related, via its relationship with MCV, to erythrocyte deformability. In the athletes (n = 27), the erythrocyte deformability is decreased and the blood concentrations of iron and magnesium are increased. It is conceivable that the state of electrolyte balance in healthy young humans is related to their blood rheology.  相似文献

Neuromuscular training protocols that include both plyometrics and dynamic balance exercises can significantly improve biomechanics and neuromuscular performance and reduce anterior cruciate ligament injury risk in female athletes. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of plyometrics (PLYO) versus dynamic stabilization and balance training (BAL) on power, balance, strength, and landing force in female athletes. Either PLYO or BAL were included as a component of a dynamic neuromuscular training regimen that reduced measures related to ACL injury and increased measures of performance. Nineteen high school female athletes participated in training 3 times a week for 7 weeks. The PLYO (n = 8) group did not receive any dynamic balance exercises and the BAL (n = 11) group did not receive any maximum effort jumps during training. Pretraining vs. posttraining measures of impact force and standard deviation of center of pressure (COP) were recorded during a single leg hop and hold. Subjects were also tested for training effects in strength (isokinetic and isoinertial) and power (vertical jump). The percent change from pretest to posttest in vertical ground reaction force was significantly different between the BAL and PLYO groups on the dominant side (p < 0.05). Both groups decreased their standard deviation of center of pressure (COP) during hop landings in the medial/lateral direction on their dominant side, which equalized pretested side to side differences. Both groups increased hamstrings strength and vertical jump. The results of this study suggest that both PLYO and BAL training are effective at increasing measures of neuromuscular power and control. A combination of PLYO and BAL training may further maximize the effectiveness of preseason training for female athletes.  相似文献

Currently, little is known about strength and conditioning programs at the high school level. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to explore current practices in strength and conditioning for varsity high school athletes in selected sports. The following were specifically examined: who administers programs for these athletes, what kinds of training activities are done, and whether the responsible party or emphasis changes depending on the gender of the athletes. Coaches of varsity soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball in 3 large Idaho school districts were asked to complete an online survey. Sixty-seven percent (32/48) of the questionnaires were completed and used for the study. The majority of coaches (84%) provided strength and conditioning opportunities for their athletes, although only 37% required participation. Strength training programs were designed and implemented primarily by either physical education teachers or head coaches. Compared with coaches of male athletes, coaches of female athletes were less likely to know the credentials of their strength coaches, and they were less likely to use certified coaches to plan and implement their strength and conditioning programs. Most programs included dynamic warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, agility training, speed training, and conditioning, and most programs were conducted 3 d·wk(-1) (76%) for sessions lasting between 30 and 59 minutes (63%). Compared with their female counterparts, male athletes were more likely to have required training, participate in strength training year round, and train using more sessions per week. This study provides additional information related to the practice of strength and conditioning in a sample of high school athletic teams.  相似文献

Thirty-five women participating in one or more intramural flag-football games provided saliva samples before, immediately after, and 10 min after competition and completed an after-competition questionnaire appraising their own performance during the game. As seen in other studies of elite athletes, these recreational athletes, on average, showed significant elevations in testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) across the competition period – the “competition effect”. In winners and losers, T levels at all time points measured were positively related to athletes' appraisals of their own individual performance. Results from this study show that the competition effect for T and C is evident in recreational women athletes and provide preliminary evidence about the relationship between cognitive appraisal and competition-related T levels.  相似文献

Selenium requirements in athletes are supposed to be increased with energy expenditure (EE) to preserve selenium status and an optimal antioxidant balance. The question of whether selenium intakes are related to EE and whether plasma selenium status induces up-regulation in erythrocyte endogenous antioxidant defense and decreases plasma oxidative damage markers in athletes was addressed. 118 well-trained athletes completed 7 d food and activities records in a cross-sectional study. Blood was sampled on day 8. Among the athletes, 23% of the males and 66% of the females had selenium intakes below two-third of the French RDA. Plasma selenium concentrations in most of less trained athletes were lower than the postulated concentration to be required to maximize erythrocyte GSH-Px activity. Athletes with the highest daily EE had the highest selenium intakes, percentage of vegetal protein intakes and plasma selenium concentrations. Only 2.6% of the athletes exhibited low plasma selenium concentrations (< 0.75 micromol/l). The relation between plasma selenium and EE was polynomial (r = 0.50; P < 0.005). Erythrocyte GSH-Px activity in athletes was not linked to selenium status. Selenium requirements are increased in athletes without being linearly related to EE.  相似文献

This study compared the lung volumes and pulmonary functions of older endurance-trained athletes with those of healthy sedentary age-matched controls, young athletes, and young untrained men to determine whether training affects the age-associated changes in these variables. Despite large differences in maximal 02 consumption (VO2max), the older athletes and their sedentary peers had similar values for all pulmonary variables when expressed as absolute values. However, because the older athletes were shorter than the older sedentary men, their vital capacity, total lung capacity (TLC), and forced expiratory volume in 1 s were significantly larger than those of the older sedentary men when normalized for age and height; the average values for maximal voluntary ventilation and residual volume (RV) were also larger in the older athletes when normalized for age and height, but the differences were not significant. The young trained and untrained men did not differ in any of these measures. TLC was the only pulmonary variable that was the same in the young and older men; RV and the RV-to-TLC ratio were larger, whereas all other pulmonary function and volume measures were lower in the older men compared with the younger men. The older athletes were the only group whose lung volumes and pulmonary function measures were all, except for RV, substantially greater than expected based on their age and height. Thus prolonged strenuous endurance training in these older highly trained endurance athletes appears to have altered the decline in pulmonary function and volumes associated with aging.  相似文献

Single-molecule fluorescence techniques have developed into powerful tools for studying the kinetics of biological reactions at the single-molecule level. Using fluorogenic substrates, enzymatic reactions can be observed in real-time with single-turnover resolution. The turnover sequence contains all kinetic information, giving access to reaction substeps and dynamic processes such as fluctuations in the reaction rate. Despite their clearly proven potential, the accuracy of current measurements is limited by the availability of substrates with 1:1 stoichiometry and the signal-to-noise ratio of the measurement. In this review we summarize the state-of-the-art and discuss these limitations using experiments performed with α-chymotrypsin as an example. We are further providing an overview of recent efforts aimed at the improvement of fluorogenic substrates and the development of new detection schemes. These detection schemes utilize nanophotonic structures such as zero mode waveguides or nanoantennas. Nanophotonic approaches reduce the size of the effective detection volume and are a powerful strategy to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. We believe that a combination of improved substrates and novel detection schemes will pave the way for performing accurate single-enzyme experiments in biologically relevant conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to determine the frequency distribution of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) Val-9Ala polymorphism (rs1799725) among 195 trained endurance and power athletes and 240 healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted using a standard protocol. Genotyping of the MnSOD Val-9Ala polymorphism was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results showed a higher proportion of the Val/Ala and Ala/Ala genotype, and a lower proportion of Val/Val genotype, in the athletes group compared with that of the controls. The Ala allele frequency was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the athletes group (46%) compared with that in the control (29%). Interestingly, there was no difference between the endurance and power athletes. In addition, the frequency of Ala/Ala genotype was significantly higher (p < 0.05) among top (international and Olympic-level) athletes (29%) compared with that among national-level endurance and power athletes (17%). We conclude that 1) the Ala allele is more frequent in athletes than in controls; and 2) the higher frequency of the Ala allele was noted in both endurance and power athletes compared with that in controls, suggesting that the positive association between the Ala allele and athletic performance may be related to ROS-related angiogenesis, mitochondrial biosynthesis, and muscle hypertrophy, and not to MnSOD aerobic properties.  相似文献

ACL tear is a major concern among athletes, coaches and sports scientists. More than taking the athlete away from training and competition, ACL tear is a risk factor for early-onset of knee osteoarthritis, and, therefore addressing strategies to avoid such injury is pertinent not only for competitive athletes, but for all physically active subjects. Imbalances in the prelanding myoelectric activity of the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles have been linked to ACL injuries. We investigated the effect of landing from different heights on prelanding myoelectric activity of the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles in recreational athletes. Thirty recreational athletes (15 male and 15 female) performed three bilateral drop jumps from two different heights; 20 cm and 40 cm while myoelectric activity of the vastus medialis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris and medial hamstrings were collected. When increasing the height of drop landing tasks prelanding normalized myoelectric activity of the quadriceps was increased by 15–20% but no significant changes were found for the hamstrings. Female athletes exhibited higher activity of the medial hamstrings compared to their male counterparts. We concluded that increasing the height of drop landing tasks is associated with increased myoelectric activity of the quadriceps but not the hamstrings in recreational athletes. These differences in muscle activity may be related to increased risk for ACL injury when the height is increased. Female athletes demonstrated higher recruitment of the medial hamstrings.  相似文献

This study assessed the hemodynamic responses to exercise of master athletes (56 +/- 5 yr of age) who placed in the top 10% of their age groups in local 10-km competitive events, competitive young runners (26 +/- 3 yr), young runners matched in training and performance to the master athletes (25 +/- 3 yr), and healthy older sedentary subjects (58 +/- 5 yr). The maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) of the master athletes was 9 and 19% lower than that of the matched young and competitive young runners, respectively. When compared at the same relative submaximal work rates, these three groups had similar stroke volumes and arteriovenous O2 (aVO2) differences, though the master athletes had lower VO2, cardiac output, and heart rate, and higher vascular resistance. The older sedentary group had a lower stroke volume, aVO2 difference, and higher vascular resistance than the master athletes. Maximal stroke volume and estimated aVO2 difference were the same in the three groups of athletes; the lower maximal heart rate of the master athletes appears to account for their lower VO2max. The older sedentary subjects' VO2max was 47% lower than that of the master athletes; this difference was almost equally the result of a lower stroke volume and a lower a-VO2 difference. Thus these older athletes did not exhibit the decline in maximum stroke volume and aVO2 difference that occurs with aging in sedentary individuals; they also appear to have retained a greater peripheral vasodilatory response than their sedentary peers.  相似文献

In many sports, athletes perform motor tasks that simultaneously require both speed and accuracy for success, such as kicking a ball. Because of the biomechanical trade-off between speed and accuracy, athletes must balance these competing demands. Modelling the optimal compromise between speed and accuracy requires one to quantify how task speed affects the dispersion around a target, a level of experimental detail not previously addressed. Using soccer penalties as a system, we measured two-dimensional kicking error over a range of speeds, target heights, and kicking techniques. Twenty experienced soccer players executed a total of 8466 kicks at two targets (high and low). Players kicked with the side of their foot or the instep at ball speeds ranging from 40% to 100% of their maximum. The inaccuracy of kicks was measured in horizontal and vertical dimensions. For both horizontal and vertical inaccuracy, variance increased as a power function of speed, whose parameter values depended on the combination of kicking technique and target height. Kicking precision was greater when aiming at a low target compared to a high target. Side-foot kicks were more accurate than instep kicks. The centre of the dispersion of shots shifted as a function of speed. An analysis of the covariance between horizontal and vertical error revealed right-footed kickers tended to miss below and to the left of the target or above and to the right, while left-footed kickers tended along the reflected axis. Our analysis provides relationships needed to model the optimal strategy for penalty kickers.  相似文献

Prior reports indicate that female athletes who demonstrate high knee abduction moments (KAMs) during landing are more responsive to neuromuscular training designed to reduce KAM. Identification of female athletes who demonstrate high KAM, which accurately identifies those at risk for noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, may be ideal for targeted neuromuscular training. Specific neuromuscular training targeted to the underlying biomechanical components that increase KAM may provide the most efficient and effective training strategy to reduce noncontact ACL injury risk. The purpose of the current commentary is to provide an integrative approach to identify and target mechanistic underpinnings to increased ACL injury in female athletes. Specific neuromuscular training techniques will be presented that address individual algorithm components related to high knee load landing patterns. If these integrated techniques are employed on a widespread basis, prevention strategies for noncontact ACL injury among young female athletes may prove both more effective and efficient.  相似文献
