1.  We examined microspectrophotometrically the retinas of 3 species of stomatopods in the superfamily Gonodactyloidea, all of which live in environments that are reduced both in the intensity and spectral range of natural illumination. Species examined were Odontodactylus brevirostris, O. scyllarus, and Hemisquilla ensigera.
2.  All 3 species had the typical gonodactyloid diversity of visual pigments, with 8 different photopigments residing in the 4 tiered rows of the midband and 2 additional types in the untiered classes of photoreceptors in the midband and peripheral retina. The spectral range covered by the max values of the visual pigments of each species was similar to that of other gonodactyloid and lysiosquilloid species.
3.  Apparent retinal adaptations in species of Odontodactylus for vision in dimly lit, spectrally narrow photic environments were seen primarily as specializations of the intrarhabdomal filters. These were of reduced diversity, and had reduced absorption at long wavelengths compared to the filters of other gonodactyloid stomatopods. Retinas of H. ensigera lacked both proximal classes of intrarhabdomal filter, and had the smallest total range of visual pigment max yet observed in mantis shrimps. These modifications decrease the spectral range and number of types of narrow-band spectral classes of phooreceptors, while increasing their sensitivity.

1.  We recorded compensatory eye stalk movements in response to pitch and roll stimulation of the visual, statocyst, and leg-proprioceptive systems in different species of crabs (Carcinus maenas, Heloecius cordiformis, Pachygrapsus marmoratus) (Fig. 2).
2.  The relative contribution of visual, statocyst and leg-proprioceptive inputs to eye stabilization in space varies greatly among different species (Fig. 3).
3.  We suggest that for stabilizing the eyes in space, the contribution of various sensory inputs in different species of crabs correspond to the availability of cues in their habitat. Semiterrestrial crabs living in a habitat with well defined and predictable visual geometry stabilize their eye stalks mainly by visual cues. Crabs living on solid substrate make strong use of leg proprioceptive input. Swimming crabs, and other predominantly aquatic crabs, rely mainly on their statocysts.

1.  The reactions of tympanic nerve fibers ofLocusta migratoria were recorded by glass microelectrodes in the metathoracic ganglion.
2.  The units were classified by frequency-, intensity-, and directional characteristics as well as by their response pattern. The response to speciesspecific song is compared with the response to song ofEphippiger ephippiger.
3.  The physiological properties lead to a classification into three types of low-frequency neurons (characteristic frequency 3.5–4 kHz; 4kHz; 5.5–6 kHz) and one type of high-frequency neuron (12–20 kHz). This is similar to other species (Gray, 1960, Michelsen, 1971).
4.  Intensity-coding is done by sharp rising intensity characteristics and by different absolute thresholds of the units.
5.  There is a marked directional sensitivity with some differences between LF and HF units. In the low frequency range the tympanal organ seems to react as a pressure gradient receiver; for high frequencies another mechanism is discussed.
6.  No filtering of species-specific song takes place at the level of the receptor cells.

In the rift valley (North-East of France/South-West of Germany), the Rhine runs freely for 300 km from South to North. The absence of natural obstacles allows the development of a very regular profile of the river. We have therefore an opportunity to study very gradual modifications of the alluvial forest communities of the fluvial corridor from upstream to downstream, according to the gradual evolution of the ecological factors, related to slope decrease and hydrological modifications.We describe, from Basel to Mainz:
1)  modification of dynamic processes in the forest communities such as successional sequences or sylvigenetic mosaïcs of the terminal stages.
2)  modification of species richness.
3)  reduction of species diversity.
4)  simplification of the forest stratification.
5)  modification of efficiency of the biogeochemical cycling.
6)  ecological vicariances.

1.  We used laser vibrometry and free field sound stimulation to study the frequency responses of the eardrum and the lateral body wall of awake male Eleutherodactylus coqui.
2.  The eardrum snowed one of two distinct frequency responses depending on whether the glottis was open (GO response) or closed (GC response) during the measurement.
3.  The lateral body wall vibrated with a maximum amplitude close to that of the eardrum and in the same frequency range.
4.  Covering the frog's body wall with vaseline reduced the vibration amplitude of the GC response by up to 15 dB.
5.  When a closed sound delivery system was used to stimulate a local area of the body wall the eardrum also showed one of two types of responses.
6.  These results suggest that sound is transmitted via the lung cavity to the internal surface of the eardrum. This lung input has a significant influence on the vibrations of the eardrum even when the glottis is closed.
7.  The vibration amplitude of the eardrum changed with the angle of sound incidence. The directionality was most pronounced in a narrow frequency range between the two main frequencies of the conspecific advertisement call.

1.  The effects of potassium channel blockade on afferent axons and terminal regions in frog dorsal roots and spinal cords, respectively, were investigatedin vitro.
2.  A condition-test (C-T) protocol was used to assess the population relative refractory period. Characteristics of main axons were evaluated by stimulation at the proximal end of transected dorsal roots (DR). Characteristics of terminal regions were tested by stimulation at the base of the dorsal horn (DH).
3.  DH recovery of excitability was delayed by low concentrations of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) and tetraethylammonium (TEA) alone or combined. The same treatments did not affect recovery to DR stimulation.
4.  DH recovery of excitability was not delayed by solutions suppressing terminal calcium influx.
5.  We conclude that sensitivity of the relative refractory period to potassium channel blocking agents differs between main axons and axon terminal regions. This may indicate differences between axon terminals and main axons in the mechanism of action potential repolarization.
6.  We hypothesize that rapid action potential repolarization by pharmacologically sensitive potassium channels in presynaptic terminal regions keeps terminal action potentials short. Terminal action potential brevity would limit calcium influx, thus preventing terminal calcium overload but contributing to transmission failures at spinal synapses.

In recent years anthropologists have made much progress in understanding ancient activities from skeletal remains. In this paper, material from the Iron Age cemetery at Pontecagnano (VII-IV century BC) is used to illustrate activity-related traits of eight basic categories:
(1)  idiosyncratic patterns of dental wear
(2)  activity-related articular degeneration
(3)  non-pathological functional alterations (neoformations, contact facets)
(4)  mechanical remodelling of bone architecture
(5)  enthesopathies (muscular lesions)
(6)  traumatic lesions
(7)  activity-related pathologies
(8)  activity-related nutritional characteristics
These traits, and others, can be used not only singly but in conjunction to define (a) patterns of activity and occupational specialization for individuals, and (b) distributions within society reflecting the basic division of labor by geneder and class.  相似文献

1.  Spectral-sensitivity functions of large-field movement-detecting units in the lobula plate of the dronefly Eristalis tenax L., which is a Batesian mimic of the honeybee, were measured using visual stimuli consisting of light flashes, or moving gratings. Two classes of units were studied, one class responding to inward horizontal motion in the contralateral eye (presumably the homologue of the well-known HI in other fly species), and the other class responding to vertically-down-ward motion in the contralateral eye.
2.  In both classes of units, the spectral-sensitivity function of the response to flashes is characterized by two peaks, one in the UV at ca. 350 nm and the other in the blue at ca. 475 nm (Figs. 3, 8). It resembles the spectral-sensitivity function of the R1-R6 class of receptors in other flies.
3.  In both classes of units, the spectral-sensitivity function of the response to movement is characterized by a single peak, occurring in the blue at ca. 450 nm (Figs. 7, 9).
4.  Control experiments on homologous units in the Australian Sheep Blowfly Lucilia cuprina, using identical stimulating conditions reveal that the response to flashes as well as movement possesses a dual-peaked spectral sensitivity, with one peak in the UV and the other in the blue-green region of the spectrum (Figs. 10–12).
5.  The results indicate that the pathways subserving the inputs to movement-detecting neurons in Eristalis are driven by more than one spectral class of photoreceptors. They also reveal that the spectral sensitivity of movement detection in Eristalis bears a closer resemblance to that of the honeybee, than to that of other flies. This similarity to the honeybee may arise from the fact that the dronefly and the honeybee occupy similar ecological niches, both foraging for nectar in flowers.

1.  We have described a general ribonucleotide probein situ hybridization methodology for localization of mRNA in frozen, unfixed tissue sections of brain.
2.  The most important steps in obtaining consistent and reproducible autoradiographs with ribonucleotide probes were tissue acetylation and application of the radiolabeled probe to tissue sections under unsealed, glass coverslips.
3.  Variability of the hybridization signal in tissue sections has been minimized to achieve a high degree of reproducibility within a given experiment as determined by densitometric analysis of rat glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptor mRNA hybridization autoradiographs.
4.  Tissue quality has been optimized for high-resolution anatomical localization of mRNA species by nuclear track emulsion.
5.  The protocol is amenable to rapid, batchwise processing of tissue samples.

1.  Non-visual sensory systems are likely to be important in antarctic fish since these fish inhabit an area where low light levels occur for long periods. This study was undertaken to examine the suitability of the lateral line system for prey detection.
2.  Recordings were made from afferent fibres of the anterior lateral line in the antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki.
3.  A vibrating probe was used to stimulate the lateral line at a range of frequencies between 10 and 100 Hz.
4.  Most units responded best at a stimulus frequency of 40 Hz. Below the best frequency the response typically declined steeply and at higher frequencies it was usually better sustained.
5.  Crustacea identified as major components of the diet ofPagothenia borchgrevinki were individually attached to a force transducer to determine the vibrations produced by swimming movements.
6.  The Fourier amplitude spectra of swimming crustaceans exhibited prominent low frequency peaks at 3–6 Hz and higher frequency peaks in the 30–40 Hz range.
7.  It is concluded that the overlap in the frequency response characteristics of the anterior lateral line and the frequencies produced by crustacean prey clearly establishes the suitability of the lateral line for prey detection.
8.  In several instances recordings were made from fish primary afferent neurons responding to a swimming amphipod. These recordings confirm that crustacean swimming is indeed a potent natural stimulus of the lateral line system.

1.  Paramecium bursaria was stimulated by a light spot of 10–15 m diameter, and the photosensitive site was searched by recording responses in swimming behavior and in membrane potential.
2.  Local stimulation to the anterior half of the cell caused an avoiding response.
3.  Stimulation to the cells deciliated by ethanol treatment elicited a depolarization of the membrane potential.
4.  Local stimulation to the anteroventral portion elicited a depolarization, but stimulation to the dorsal side induced no change in the membrane potential.
5.  The action spectrum of depolarization elicited by local stimulation to the anteroventral surface showed two main peaks at 420 nm and 560 nm, corresponding to those of light stimulation of the whole cell.
6.  It is concluded that a photosensitive site exists on the anteroventral surface ofParamecium, in particular within the oral groove of the cell. This local photosensitivity is discussed with respect to the mating reaction.

1.  In the compound eye of the maleChrysomyia megacephala the facets in the ventral part of the eye are only ca. 20 m in diameter, but increase abruptly to ca. 80 m above the equator of the eye. Correspondingly there is a large and abrupt increase in the rhabdomere diameter from 2 to as much as 5 urn. The far-field radiation pattern of the eye shows that, despite the large change in ommatidial dimensions, the resolution of the eye remains approximately constant across the equator: angular sensitivity of the photoreceptors and sampling raster are similar ventrally and dorsally. The main result of the large dorsal facets is a more than tenfold increase in light capture. Thus this eye provides a clear example of an insect where large dorsal facets have evolved not for higher acuity, but rather for higher light capture.
2.  Sensitivity is increased even more by a seventh photoreceptor cell joining neural superposition, as reported before for the dorsal eye of male houseflies. All seven photoreceptors have the same spectral sensitivity.
3.  Angular sensitivities in the dorsal eye are more Gaussian-shaped than the flat-topped profile expected for large rhabdomere diameters. This is explained by the anatomical finding that the dorsal rhabdomeres taper strongly. It is suggested that the combination of high photon capture and rounded angular sensitivities is advantageous for monitoring movement and position of small objects.
4.  Finally some of the constraints involved in constructing specialized dorsal eye regions for detection of small objects are considered.

1.  Tethered crickets (Gryllus campestris) walking on an air-suspended ball exhibit a spontaneous response to thee-vector of polarized light presented from above. In this study we determined the spectral sensitivity of polarization vision by finding the threshold light intensities for eliciting thise-vector response at different wavelengths.
2.  The behaviorally determined spectral sensitivity was compared with the spectral sensitivity of the three spectral receptor types of the cricket eye (UV, blue, green) as measured electrophysiologically. The best match was obtained with the blue-receptor. This supports the thesis that polarization vision in crickets is mediated by the anatomically and physiologically specialized dorsal rim area of the eye. This part of the eye contains only blue-receptors, whereas other eye regions consist of UV- and green-receptors.
3.  The absolute sensitivity of the cricket'se-vector detection system is very high. The threshold irradiance (at 50% of the maximal response) at 433 nmis 2.5×107 quanta cm–2 s–1, which is even lower than the effective quantum flux (range 380–500 nm) under the clear, moonless night sky.

1.  The actions of GABA on three classes of visual interneurons in crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, medulla externa are examined. The effect of GABA on the visual response is compared to GABA's action on agonist-elicited responses purported to mediate the visual response.
2.  GABA produces a shunting type of inhibition in medullary amacrine cells which is associated with a small depolarization (Figs. 2, 3), a large increase in input conductance (Gn) and a reversal potential close to rest (Fig. 4). GABA is a potent antagonist to the depolarizing action of acetylcholine (ACh) (Fig. 5).
3.  GABA depolarizes dimming fibers (Fig. 2), and the response is mediated by an increase in Gn (Fig. 6). GABA antagonizes the light-elicited IPSP and the hyperpolarizing action of ACh (Fig. 7).
4.  Sustaining fibers (SF) do not appear to have GABA receptors but GABA inhibits the excitatory visual input pathway to the SFs (Fig. 8). Conversely, the GABA antagonist, bicuculline, potentiates the SF light response (Fig. 9).
5.  GABA has at least three different modes of antagonist action in the medulla: i) Increased conductance and depolarization in dimming fibers and medullary amacrine neurons; ii) Decreased chloride conductance in tangential cells; and iii) An inhibitory action on the visual pathway which drives SFs.

3DFS is a 3D flexible searching system for lead discovery. Version 1.0 of 3DFS was published recently (Wang, T.; Zhou, J. J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci., 1998, 38, 71–77). Here version 1.2 represents a substantial improvement over version 1.0. There are six major changes in version 1.2 compared to version 1.0.
1.  A new rule of aromatic ring recognition.
2.  The inclusion of multiple-type atoms and chains in queries.
3.  The inclusion of more spatial constraints, especially the directions of lone pairs.
4.  The improvement of the query file format.
5.  The addition of genetic search for flexible search.

1.  Bees were trained to enter the central hole in a disc containing 89 holes and collect sugar-water from a box placed behind it (Fig. 1). Visual marks were offered on the inner surface of a cylinder placed in front of the disc (Fig. 2), thus projecting onto peripheral (nonfrontal) regions of the bees' eye. The trained bees were tested by recording their choices among the holes.
2.  Bees use the memorized position of peripheral marks to localize the frontally positioned goal (Figs. 6–9). The effectiveness of a mark depends on its retinal position, the most effective marks being lateral ones (Figs. 8, 9).
3.  Altering the dimensions of the mark does not influence the distribution of the bees' choice (Figs. 11–13). Thus, image motion rather than image size is used for distance estimation in the present task.
4.  Cinematographic recordings (Fig. 14) revealed that the searching bees' whereabouts are correlated with the choice distribution (Fig. 6a). The hypothesis that the bees stabilize the mark in the trained retinal position by correcting for retinal image slip is proposed.
5.  Experiments using coloured patterns revealed that the bees' performance is mediated by the green-sensitive channel (Figs. 17–22), as predicted by the above hypothesis.

(1)  The aminoesters inhibit glucose-stimulated proton extrusion by yeast cells.
(2)  The inhibitory activity depends on aliphatic carbon chain length.
(3)  The inhibition of proton extrusion is concentration-dependent.
(4)  The aminoesters stimulate quinacrine accumulation in vacuoles of yeast cells so they should possess affinities for lysosomes.
