Many populations of the narrow-clawed crayfish Astacus leptodactylus in Turkey, including those inhabiting Lake E?irdir, declined drastically in the mid-1980s due to introduction of crayfish plague Aphanomyces astaci. However, unlike many other localities, there has been some recovery in the A. leptodactylus population inhabiting this lake even though crayfish plague has been suspected to have persisted since then. In support of this, DNA from 5 of 34 healthy-looking crayfish sampled recently from the lake tested positive by both conventional and real-time PCR using species-specific primers targeting the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region, and product sequence analysis confirmed the identification of A. astaci. This complies with other recent reports of coexistence of native European crayfish with this pathogen, and further research is now needed to identify the key mechanisms allowing it.  相似文献

Biological invasions are a major threat to global biodiversity. Invasive freshwater crayfish in that context are especially prominent for their negative effects on both ecosystem integrity and native crayfish. However, some systems may have supported a crayfish species not originally native to the system without perceivable negative consequences for the ecosystem while other invasive crayfish species may constitute a major threat to ecosystem stability. Here I present an example how two crayfish, the spiny-cheek and the Galician crayfish both by researchers and governmental agencies considered non-native differ in their threats to the native ecosystem. Whereas the spiny-cheek crayfish is a recent potentially disease-transmitting and still spreading invader with high local densities the Galician crayfish might be part of the lake’s fauna since several hundred years, appears in lower densities and is unlikely to be a vector of disease. Therefore, regardless of the Galician crayfish’s actual date of introduction it is thus a rather “old and integrated” invader, which is now being faced and itself potentially threatened by the emergence of a “new and dangerous” invader: the spiny-cheek crayfish. This also exemplifies that in the face of often insufficient scientific information about dates of species introductions care should be taken in postulating species as invasive and dangerous without any form of risk assessment for their impact on the ecosystem.  相似文献

Invasion is one of the most consequential phenomena affecting the distribution of native species. Few in number of species, European crayfish are losing the competition with introduced North American crayfish. The spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus, is an outstanding example, successfully competing against the native narrow-clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus. For four years, we collected data regarding crayfish occurrences, their relative abundance, and the structure of populations in the ongoing colonisation process of O. limosus in the lower Danube. The mature females of both invasive and indigenous crayfish species were analysed with respect to biometry and production of oocytes in relation to the dynamics of invasion. The interspecific comparisons showed no significant differences regarding body size, with an average of approximately 102 mm total length and 31 g wet weight for both species. However, the fecundity of the indigenous species was found to be constant throughout the investigated area, whereas the number of eggs produced by the invasive females was significantly increased at the active front of the invasion. The maximum number of ovarian eggs found was 887 and 1156 in the indigenous species and the invasive species, respectively. We propose the scenario that the invasive species, which carries the deadly crayfish plague, creates an ecological advantage by reducing the populations of indigenous crayfish. Subsequently, the invasive females opportunistically use the available resources to enhance their fecundity, resulting in the acute growth of populations. However, the long-term competitiveness and colonisation success of O. limosus still remain in question.  相似文献

The coldwater crayfish Orconectes eupunctus is endemic to the Spring and Eleven Point Rivers of Arkansas and Missouri, and appears to have been displaced from a portion of its range by the recently introduced ringed crayfish Orconectes neglectus. We examined competition among juveniles as a potential mechanism for this crayfish species displacement through laboratory and field experiments. Orconectes eupunctus juveniles survived and grew in stream cages in their former range, implicating biotic interactions rather than habitat degradation in the displacement. Laboratory experiments revealed O. neglectus juveniles were dominant in the presence of limited food, whereas size rather than species determined occupancy of limited shelter. In a field competition experiment using stream cages, O. neglectus juveniles did not inhibit growth or reduce survival of O. eupunctus juveniles. Consequently, laboratory evidence of O. neglectus dominance did not correspond with competition under field conditions. Combined with previous studies examining the effects of O. neglectus on O. eupunctus, these results suggest that competition may not be a factor in this crayfish species displacement. Alternate mechanisms for the apparent displacement of O. eupunctus by O. neglectus, such as differential predation or reproductive interference, should be investigated.  相似文献

1. A sample of adult signal crayfish were taken from a pond with a hepatotoxic bloom of the benthic cyanobacterium Oscillatoria sancta . Cyanobacteria were found in the stomachs of thirty‐one out of thirty‐two crayfish examined.
2. To examine the effect of hepatotoxic cyanobacteria on crayfish a 14‐day feeding trial was carried out with thirty‐six animals. There were three treatments: (i) hepatotoxic and (ii) non‐toxic Planktothrix agardhii; and (iii) crayfish pellets as a control.
3. High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that microcystins (the toxins of P. agardhii ) had accumulated in the hepatopancreas of 50% of the animals in the toxic treatment.
4. The cyanobacteria did not appear to have any negative impact on the crayfish. All crayfish survived, remained motile and ate throughout the experiment.
5. During the experiment blood samples were taken and the total number of haemocytes counted. At the end of the experiment glucose concentration and relative wet weight of the hepatopancreas were measured. No differences between crayfish fed on toxic and non‐toxic P. agardhii and the controls were found.
6. The fact that microcystin accumulates in the crayfish hepatopancreas indicates that the toxin may be transferred further up the food chain.  相似文献

The fossil record of cichlids is sparse, and every new discovery can provide new insights into the evolutionary history of this speciose freshwater fish family. In this article, we describe †Rebekkachromis gen. nov. from the middle-to-late Miocene (c. 11 MYA) of the Central Kenya Rift within the East African Rift system. †Rebekkachromis is represented by two species that differ from all other fossil and extant African cichlids, except Etia, in possessing the unique character combination of two supraneural bones and a set of robust tricuspid oral teeth in the outer row of the dentition. Furthermore, †Rebekkachromis exhibits the only proposed morphological synapomorphy of the Haplotilapiini, namely the presence of tricuspid teeth in the inner row of the oral dentition. We show that †Rebekkachromis constitutes the oldest reliably identified fossil record of a haplotilapiine. The evolution of cichlid fishes possessing tricuspid teeth in the rivers and lakes of the Central Kenya Rift during the middle-to-late Miocene could have been facilitated by volcanic activity, as repeated ash falls may well have fostered the growth of algae and in particular diatoms. These fishes could thus have had a major advantage, because they could exploit the newly available, rich food resources.

Inhibitory control over activity of the receptor neuron was investigated in a preparation of the stretch receptor and abdominal ganglionic chain in crayfishes. Potentials were recorded intracellularly from receptor neurons and neurons of the abdominal ganglion, and extracellularly from the dorsal roots. IPSPs appeared in the receptor neuron in response to stimulation of that same neuron or of the abdominal ganglionic chain. The relationship between spikes at the input and output of the inhibitory neuron varied over a wide range depending on the functional state of the neuron. A linear relationship was established between the time before appearance of the IPSP and the duration of the interspike interval of the slowly adapting neuron (SAN) and also between the firing rate of this and the inhibitory neurons during recurrent inhibition. Factors influencing the length of the interspike interval of the SAN on the appearance of an IPSP in it were investigated. It is postulated that summation of potentials evoked by spikes of the SAN and also of potentials evoked by spikes of that neuron, together with local processes evidently of endogenous nature takes place in the inhibitory neuron. IPSPs were recorded from two neurons resistant to strychnine and blocked by picrotoxin on the receptor neuron. The structural and functional organization of the individual elements in the chain of recurrent inhibition and inhibition evoked by stimulation of the abdominal ganglionic chain is discussed.Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. As in other benthic decapods, crayfish have chelae that are important for intra‐specific agonistic encounters. In Austropotamobius pallipes, scars and mutilations are present mostly on the chelae, these being the main targets of agonistic contacts. Because males participate in more aggressive interactions than females do and compete with other males for acquiring females in escalating contests, selection for large chelae should be stronger in males. Thus, in A. pallipes (i) chelae are longer, wider and higher in males than in females; (ii) chelar size in males increases allometrically with cephalothorax length; (iii) male specimens are more often deprived of at least one cheliped and (iv) large males have the highest frequency of scars. Males with one regenerated cheliped, when opposed to a competitor with both large chelipeds, display the same motivation to fight, but perform less chelae threat displays than normal crayfish and immediately get a lower hierarchical rank. In these contests, Resource Holding Potential (= chelar size) is highly different between the crayfish and the information of this asymmetry is correctly transferred between the two opponents.  相似文献

Summary Tight or occluding intercellular junctions occur between adjacent glial processes in normal and regenerating crayfish motor nerve sheaths. Although infrequent, these junctions possess the ridge and groove configuration characteristic of freeze-cleaved occluding junctions. When present, nerve sheath tight junctions consist of a single, or at most a few, parallel intramembrane ridges situated on the EF membrane face of the glial plasma membrane. Consequently, such contacts are rarely recognized in thin sections of plasticembedded nerve sheaths. Crayfish nerve sheath tight junctions are of the fascia occludens type and, therefore, do not impede solute flow across the nerve sheath. Fasciae occludentes of regenerating nerve sheaths occur in close proximity to discoid plaque-like aggregates of particles assumed to represent maculae adhaerentes. This relationship, which was not observed in normal nerve sheaths, suggests a functional association between the two types of junctions, perhaps developmental transformation of one junction type into the other. Although ridges and grooves of tight junctions occur next to crossfractured trans-glial channels, no functional significance is proposed for this relationship. This study is the first report of tight intercellular junctions in crustacean glial nerve sheaths.Supported by the National Research Council of Canada  相似文献

The local flow environment affects the shape of waterborne chemical signals through a variety of physical mechanisms and at several scales. Since crayfish rely on these chemical signals to extract information about predators, prey, and mates, one might expect the chemical sensors (aesthetascs) on crayfish antennules to be physically tuned to the presentation of chemical cues by the flow environment. This hypothesis was tested by comparing length, diameter, and spacing of antennules and aesthetascs among geographically distinct populations of Orconectes virilis. Crayfish were collected from the Chagrin river, Hebron hatchery, and Burt lake. In addition, antennules were sampled from 43 museum populations representing 12 lake, 10 creek, and 21 river populations from multiple states and river drainages. Mean velocities from the collection sites were either measured directly or calculated from United States Geological Survey (USGS) historical data. Structural parameters were measured using Scion Image software on Scanning electron microscope micrographs, and analyses of variance were performed using StatView. Structural parameters of aesthetascs were found to vary with flow environment. Aesthetascs from lake populations were inserted at a larger angle, extended out farther from the supporting antennule relative to the width of the antennule, and were more widely spaced than aesthetascs from creek, hatchery, and river populations.  相似文献

Differential heart rates during heating and cooling (heart rate hysteresis) are an important thermoregulatory mechanism in ectothermic reptiles. We speculate that heart rate hysteresis has evolved alongside vascularisation, and to determine whether this phenomenon occurs in a lineage with vascularised circulatory systems that is phylogenetically distant from reptiles, we measured the response of heart rate to convective heat transfer in the Australian freshwater crayfish, Cherax destructor. Heart rate during convective heating (from 20 to 30 degrees C) was significantly faster than during cooling for any given body temperature. Heart rate declined rapidly immediately following the removal of the heat source, despite only negligible losses in body temperature. This heart rate 'hysteresis' is similar to the pattern reported in many reptiles and, by varying peripheral blood flow, it is presumed to confer thermoregulatory benefits particularly given the thermal sensitivity of many physiological rate functions in crustaceans.  相似文献

Experiments on sodium channel inactivation kinetics were performed on voltage-clamped crayfish giant axons. The primary goal was to investigate whether channels must open before inactivating. Voltage-clamp artifacts were minimized by the use of low-sodium solutions and full series resistance compensation, and the spatial uniformity of the currents was checked with a closely spaced pair of electrodes used to measure local current densities. For membrane potentials between -40 and +40 mV, sodium currents decay to zero with a single exponential time-course. The time constant for decay is a steep function of membrane potential. The time-course of inactivation measured with the double-pulse method is very similar to the decay of current at the same potential. Steady-state inactivation curves measured with different test pulses are identical. The time-course of double pulse inactivation shows a lag that roughly correlates with the opening of sodium channels, but detailed comparisons with the time course of the prepulse current suggest that it is not strictly necessary for channels to open before inactivating. Measurements of the potential dependence of the integral of sodium conductance area also inconsistent with the simplest cases of models in which channels must open before inactivating.  相似文献

In invasion ecology, niche width has been recognized as a crucial factor for the outcome of an invasion. A common characteristic of successful invaders seems to be a broad niche width, and their impact on native communities may increase with increasing niche size. Overall, successful invader predators are predicted to shift their niche width by broadening it from native to invaded conditions. The scarcity of ecological studies examining invasive species in their native ranges prevents researchers from knowing if the prevalence of generalist invaders represents conservatism of broad native-range niches or instead niche shifts as a result of different processes acting in the invaded areas. Here we reviewed literature on trophic niche of the predatory invader American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) in both native and invaded ranges. We used statistical and graphic tools to analyse possible shifts in dietary niche width and the effect of introduced crayfish on the feeding strategy of L. catesbeianus. Globally, our results indicate that food sources used by the species differed in native and invaded sites, with a narrower trophic niche width in invaded areas. However, this pattern was disrupted by the occurrence of introduced crayfish that represents the major driver of the observed niche-width variation. Our data shed light on possible complications in interpreting and predicting patterns of biological invasions due to the interaction among species from different trophic levels that apparently disrupt general patterns that are likely bound to be idiosyncratic and complex.  相似文献

1. Human activities have promoted the spread of species worldwide. Several crayfish species have been introduced into new areas, posing a threat to native crayfish and other biota. Invader success may depend on the ability to utilise a wide variety of habitats and resources. Successful invaders are generally expected to have broader niches and to be more plastic than non-invasive species.
2. Using stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen we compared the niche widths of native noble crayfish and introduced signal crayfish, a successful invader of Swedish streams. The calculation of niche width took account of between-site differences in basal resource isotope signature ranges. We also assessed whether population density, prey biomass or prey diversity affected niche width.
3. At the species level, signal crayfish had twice the niche width of noble crayfish. However, individual populations of noble crayfish and signal crayfish in Swedish streams had similar niche widths. This suggests that signal crayfish has greater plasticity with respect to habitat utilisation and feeding than noble crayfish. Niche width in both species correlated positively with benthic invertebrate biomass and diversity, indicating that animal food sources are important for crayfish.
4. We find that assessing niche width in relation to invader success can be a useful tool trying to predict the impact of invasions on different scales. The findings in this study suggest that invaders and natives will have a similar impact on the stream scale whereas the invader will have a larger impact on the regional scale due to the ability to utilise a wider range of streams.  相似文献

The yolk protein of Cherax quadricarinatus contains six major high-density lipoprotein (HDL) subunits with the approximate molecular masses of 177, 155, 106, 95, 86, and 75 kDa, of which only the 106-kDa polypeptide is negatively charged. On the basis of their molecular weights, time of appearance and disappearance, their floating density and susceptibility to enzyme degradation (by a serine proteinase), these six HDL polypeptides were classified into two subgroups. One group comprises the higher-molecular-weight compounds above 106 kDa, and the other includes the lower-molecular-weight compounds up to 95 kDa. Other than being different from the lower-molecular-weight polypeptides, the negatively charged 106-kDa polypeptide was significantly different from members of its higher-molecular-weight group belonging to a different, less abundant, yolk protein as shown by HPLC separation. Immunological studies and peptide mapping in which the 106-kDa polypeptide did not show similarity to any of the other HDL components confirmed these differences. Moreover, the amino acid composition of the 106-kDa polypeptide was different from that of known vitellin from other crustacean species. This unique negatively charged polypeptide presents an enigma as it is known to be a secondary vitellogenic-related HDL polypeptide, immunolocalized in yolk globules; however, it is different to all the other HDL polypeptides, thus presenting the question whether it is indeed a component of "classical" crustacean vitellin.  相似文献

Summary A -1,3-glucan-binding protein (GBP) was purified from crayfish plasma, and incubated with laminarin (L), a -1,3-glucan. The GBP reacted with laminarin (GBP-L) induced strong spreading and partial degranulation of isolated and separated crayfish granular haemocytes. However, neither the GBP nor laminarin alone induced any changes in the crayfish granular cells. When monolayers of granular haemocytes were incubated with 20 g of GBP-L, more than 82% of the haemocytes were affected. The activity of GBP-L on granular cells was dose-dependent and a plateau was reached at 10 g of GBP-L. The degranulation of crayfish haemocytes induced by GBP-L seemed to occur by a regulated exocytosis, since it was strongly inhibited by specific blockers of this process such as SITS or calmidazolium. Monospecific anti-GBP antibodies also totally blocked the effect of GBP-L on crayfish granular cells. Indirect immunofluoresence staining demonstrated that the GBP-L could bind to the surface of granular cells, whereas GBP did not bind or bound very weakly to the haemocyte surface.  相似文献

While the role of eicosanoids in reproduction in vertebrate species has been well established, the role of these fatty acid derivatives in invertebrate species has not been as well characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in prostaglandins E2 and F2 during vitellogenesis in the crayfish Procambarus paeninsulanus. In homogenates of crayfish ovaries taken at various stages of development, the rate of prostaglandin synthesis and the concentrations of prostaglandins E2 and F2 increased during the final stages of yolk production just prior to ovulation. A gradual increase in prostaglandin E2 amounts was observed throughout the progression of vitellogenesis. The data suggests the possible involvement of prostaglandins in regulatory events associated with vitellogenesis and the induction of ovulation in Procambarus paeninsulanus.Abbreviations EIA enzyme immunoassay kit - GIH gonad inhibiting hormone - HPLC high-pressure liquid chromatography - PGE2 prostaglandin E2 - PGF2 prostaglandin F2 - RIA radioimmuno assay - SNK Student-Newman-Keuls multiple t-test - TLC thin-layer chromatography  相似文献

In the headwaters of the New River in western North Carolina, the dominant crayfish species changes with increasing stream size. One transition occurs between third- and fourth-order streams. Cambarus chasmodactylus is the dominant species in third-order tributaries. Orconectes cristavarius is the dominant species in the fourth-order South Fork of the New River. While adult C. chasmodactylus are present in the South Fork, the young-of-the-year (YOY) of this species are absent despite evidence of reproduction. In this study we evaluated the factors that may be responsible for the absence of C. chasmodactylus YOY from the South Fork. A field experiment was used to evaluate the role of abiotic factors and competition with YOY O. cristavarius. There was no significant effect of either of these factors on mortality or growth of C. chasmodactylus YOY. The growth rate of O. cristavarius was 3× faster than that of C. chasmodactylus in this experiment. Since neither abiotic factors nor competition appeared responsible for the exclusion of C. chasmodactylus YOY from the South Fork we evaluated the potential importance of selective predation by rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris), a fish species that is common in the South Fork but virtually absent in the tributaries. In a laboratory experiment, C. chasmodactylus YOY experienced significantly higher mortality than O. cristavarius YOY in the presence of rock bass. Field observations and a laboratory experiment suggest that the two crayfish species differ in their anti-predator behaviors. Cambarus chasmodactylus was less likely to swim when initially disturbed and swam shorter distances than O. cristavarius. The differences in escape behavior and growth rate may contribute to the differences in the vulnerability of the two species to rock bass predation. Our results suggest that intense predation pressure exerted by the rock bass may contribute to the virtual exclusion of C. chasmodactylus YOY from the fourth-order South Fork. Handling editor: J.
