Microhabitat type and the competition for microhabitats can each influence patterns of abundance and mortality in coral reef fish communities; however, the effect of microhabitat on the intensity and outcome of competition is not well understood. In Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, surveys were used to quantify microhabitat use and selectivity in two live-coral specialist damselfishes (Pomacentridae), Chrysiptera parasema, and Dascyllus melanurus. A patch reef experiment was then conducted to test how intra- and interspecific competition interacts with two types of microhabitat to influence survival of recently settled C. parasema. Surveys demonstrated that C. parasema and D. melanurus recruits utilized similar coral microhabitats; 72% of C. parasema and 85% of D. melanurus used corymbose and bottlebrush growth forms of Acropora. One microhabitat type, Pocillopora sp. coral, was commonly used by D. melanurus but rarely by C. parasema. The patch reef experiment revealed that both microhabitat and interspecific competition influence abundance of recently settled C. parasema. Microhabitat had the strongest influence on survival of C. parasema. In the absence of interspecific competitors, ~85% of C. parasema survived for 5 days after transplantation to high-complexity bottlebrush Acropora reefs when compared to only 25% survival of Pocillopora reefs. In both microhabitats, interspecific competition with D. melanurus, but not intraspecific competition, significantly decreased the survival of C. parasema. Taken together, these results suggest that the observed distribution of C. parasema results from specialized microhabitat requirements and competition for space in those microhabitats. This study demonstrates that interspecific competition and microhabitat type can interact to influence early post-settlement survival in coral reef fishes, though, whether and how these factors influence survival will depend on the behavioural attributes and strength of habitat associations among potential competitors. We hypothesized that distribution and microhabitat use by imperilled chub Squalius torgalensis in the Torgal stream, Portugal, during low flows, were related to spatial patchiness in physical resources and shifts in ontogenetic preferences. We mapped fish abundance and sampled microhabitat use and availability via snorkelling. We used the coefficient of dispersion in abundance, and spatial autocorrelation analyses to characterize chub distribution, and Hurdle models to relate chub presence and abundance to habitat characteristics. We showed that chub displayed an aggregated distribution, apparently in association with patchily distributed and autocorrelated physical resources, such as debris, roots and aquatic vegetation. Microhabitat use generally was unrelated to velocity, and ontogenetic differences in microhabitat use were not substantial. Nevertheless, sometimes small chub preferred low-velocity patches with coarse substrata, debris and roots, whereas large chub preferred deeper patches with roots and aquatic vegetation. Results suggest that, in low flow conditions, chub respond to resource patchiness by congregating in favourable microhabitats, and that maintenance of mosaics of patches with variable substrata, cover and depth may be important for the persistence of fish in Mediterranean streams.  相似文献

Habitat selection decisions by consumers has the potential to shape ecosystems. Understanding the factors that influence habitat selection is therefore critical to understanding ecosystem function. This is especially true of mesoconsumers because they provide the link between upper and lower tropic levels. We examined the factors influencing microhabitat selection of marine mesoconsumers – juvenile giant shovelnose rays (Glaucostegus typus), reticulate whiprays (Himantura uarnak), and pink whiprays (H. fai) – in a coastal ecosystem with intact predator and prey populations and marked spatial and temporal thermal heterogeneity. Using a combination of belt transects and data on water temperature, tidal height, prey abundance, predator abundance and ray behavior, we found that giant shovelnose rays and reticulate whiprays were most often found resting in nearshore microhabitats, especially at low tidal heights during the warm season. Microhabitat selection did not match predictions derived from distributions of prey. Although at a course scale, ray distributions appeared to match predictions of behavioral thermoregulation theory, fine-scale examination revealed a mismatch. The selection of the shallow nearshore microhabitat at low tidal heights during periods of high predator abundance (warm season) suggests that this microhabitat may serve as a refuge, although it may come with metabolic costs due to higher temperatures. The results of this study highlight the importance of predators in the habitat selection decisions of mesoconsumers and that within thermal gradients, factors, such as predation risk, must be considered in addition to behavioral thermoregulation to explain habitat selection decisions. Furthermore, increasing water temperatures predicted by climate change may result in complex trade-offs that might have important implications for ecosystem dynamics.  相似文献

Summary Among some species of Sonoran Desert rodents microhabitat differences are density dependent. I studied the differences in microhabitat use among four species of heteromyid rodents (Dipodomys merriami, Perognathus amplus, P. baileyi, and P. penicillatus) at low and at high population densities. Microhabitats are defined by the abundance and size distribution of desert shrubs. During a period of low population density the rodent species showed substantial microhabitat differentiation. Following a large increase in pocket mouse (Perognathus spp.) numbers differences in microhabitat use between species disappeared. The lack of microhabitat differentiation at high density is due to microhabitat shifts rather than an expansion in the number of microhabitats used. The shifts lead to increased similarity among species in microhabitat use. Microhabitat overlap is not constant but it is highly variable and sensitive to changes in rodent abundance.  相似文献

We examined the diurnal refuges occupied by the nocturnal squirrelfish, Holocentrus rufus, to describe refuges and the behavior associated with their use and to determine which, if any, refuge characteristics were selected. We tagged 21 H. rufus on two sites on a fringing reef in Barbados, West Indies, identified the refuges they used (n = 57), measured ten characteristics of each refuge and the surrounding microhabitat, and monitored their refuge use for 4 weeks. To evaluate refuge selection, we measured the same characteristics on a comparable number of unused potential refuges (n = 67) on the same reefs and used classification tree models to determine which characteristics separated used from unused refuges. Each fish used 1–9 refuges, which did not overlap among individuals and were defended against intrusion by conspecifics and some heterospecifics. Fish with more than one refuge frequently moved among them. There was strong site fidelity with no immigration of untagged fish or emigration of tagged fish on either reef during the study period and no additional refuges being occupied over the 4-week period. Refuges were primarily holes, open at one or two ends, which varied in size, distance from the reef edge, entrance orientation, and vertical relief at the entrance. Holes used as refuges differed significantly from unused holes mainly in characteristics related to the vertical position of their entrance, but the classification tree models differed for the two sites. This study provides the first detailed information on characteristics of daytime refuges used by a nocturnally active reef fish and the first evidence of selectivity of refuges. It suggests that the abundance and characteristics of holes on reefs could influence the density of H. rufus on natural reefs.  相似文献

Processes occurring during the early life stages of corals are important for the replenishment of coral assemblages and the resilience of coral reefs. However, the factors influencing early life stages of corals are not well understood, and the role of micro-topographic complexity for habitat associations of juvenile corals is largely unexplored. This study investigated the microhabitat distribution patterns of early life stages of corals and a potential macroalgal competitor (Turbinaria ornata) across two reef zones (reef crest and outer reef flat) on Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. In both reef zones, both corals and T. ornata were significantly more abundant in concealed microhabitats than in semi-concealed or open microhabitats (GLMM: P < 0.001). The prevalence of juvenile corals and T. ornata within concealed environments suggests that they might be effective refuges from grazing by herbivorous fishes. The density of juvenile corals was positively related, and density of T. ornata negatively related to the abundance of two groups of herbivorous fishes, pairing rabbitfishes, and surgeonfishes in the genus Zebrasoma (BEST ENV-BIO: r s  = 0.72, P < 0.01), which feed in concealed microhabitats. This correlative evidence suggests that crevices may be important for early life stages of both coral and macroalgae, and that a specific suite of crevice-feeding fishes may influence benthic community dynamics in these microhabitats.  相似文献

While relationships between adult fish density and structural habitat features are well established, relatively little is known about the habitat associations of juvenile reef fish. In a reserve system in Palau, we quantified microhabitat association with juvenile reef fish community structure, and determined the influence of foraging space, predator size and confamilial attraction on juvenile and adult pomacentrid abundance. Habitat structure and juvenile reef fish communities differed significantly among microhabitats with one exception: no difference was found between foliose and consolidated rubble microhabitats. Overall, pomacentrids characterised the juvenile community structure of each microhabitat. The abundance of early juvenile pomacentrids is simultaneously determined by microhabitat structure and predator size, with little evidence for settlement selection near adults. The results also suggest that the influence of habitat structure become weaker with ontogeny which in part, drives large predators to negatively influence the abundance of adult pomacentrids. The results have important implications on management, specifically in prioritizing areas for protection, and in modeling the impacts of habitat loss on reef fish communities.  相似文献

The juveniles of many reef fishes behave cryptically during critical juvenile stages in their life history and thus the microhabitats they often occupy are not well known. Comprehensive surveys of reef fishes on the temperate mid-west coast of Australia identified that juveniles of the unrelated Epinephelides armatus (Epinephelidae) and Bodianus frenchii (Labridae) < 100 mm total length both exhibit cryptic behaviour by exclusively swimming upside down under cave roofs and ledges. These individuals swam among the sponges and small algae in this microhabitat which would provide refuge from predation and also supply the dietary requirements of these two carnivores. Occupying this microhabitat would also reduce intra-specific competition, as individuals > 150 mm were only observed swimming ventrally oriented to the substrate in caves, under ledges or on open reef. Identifying the nursery habitats of fishery species, such as E. armatus and B. frenchii, is critical for understanding their life histories, but would also inform survey designs aimed at determining recruitment strength or variation.  相似文献

The two semi-aquatic shrew species Neomys fodiens and Neomys anomalus are very similar in their ecology and morphology. Thus, they tend to be strong competitors for resources when they occur syntopically in habitats. We analysed the microhabitat selection of both species based on 14 parameters at two study sites in western Saxony (Germany). At the first study site, the results show segregation into different preferred microhabitats. In comparison to N. fodiens, N. anomalus occurred in low distance to the oxbow lake at places with denser herbal cover. Thus, we verified the hypothesis of Rychlik (Acta Theriologica 42:351-388 1997) who assumed differences in microhabitat niches for both shrew species to avoid competition. Furthermore, there was a spatial segregation within N. fodiens depending on their age. While adults occurred close to the water at areas with sparse herb layer, the juveniles and subadults were predominantly captured in some distance to the stream at denser vegetation. We assume that this is the result of different microhabitat preferences in N. fodiens depending on age and not a result of intraspecific antagonism. Moreover, the possibility to build subsurface burrows (and as an equivalent to this, crevice systems resulting of bank fixation with large stones) seems to be the main limiting factor for the occurrence of N. fodiens at the other surveyed site. At this site, no differences in microhabitats were visible between the age classes of N. fodiens.  相似文献

  1. From 40 waters of the Abisko-district (Sweden, Lapland) 58 samples were collected (essentially samples from sediments).
  2. It is not possible to clear the origin of all discovered tests of sediments. The bottom of most waters was covered with mosses, from which vegetation, tests can come into the sediments. But also tests from other biotopes, can be found at the bottom.
  3. Nevertheless we can recognize typical characters of those species living in sediments. The prevalent type is the “Difflugia-type”. Those species of Centropyxis which immigrated into sediments demonstrate a trend towards the “Difflugia-type”. The immigration is possible from Aufwuchs, mosses and soils. 62,7% of the recorded tests belong to Difflugia, 17,8% to Centropyxis.
  4. The prevalent species in the sediments of the Abisko-district is Difflugia elegans var. teres, the next is D. glubolosa.
  5. A great number of investigated waters contained the oligotrophic species Centropyxis aërophila. Only one lake (Ruontenjaure) shows the association of dystrophic lakes.
  6. Some species are described taxonomically, for instance: Centropyxis nauwercki n.sp. C. nauwercki is very much like Difflugia, but is also connected with C. platystoma. The new species shows a trend from Centropyxis to Difflugia.
  7. C. aërophila can also immigrate into the Aufwuchs. There the species has membraneous tests.
  8. Geographical aspects of the sediment colonization are discussed.

  1. From May to December 1971 at six sites in upstate New York, samples of freshwater Aufwuchs (the largely algal “scum” flora) were collected on sets of exposed microscope slides. Successive standing crop biomass estimates are presented as analyses of total organic carbon (by wet oxidation) and total nitrogen (by micro-Dumas). Nutritional quality of the Aufwuchs can be assessed in carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratios, and these are correlated with substantive data from concurrent studies on the growth and fecundity of second trophic level snails (Laevapex and Lymnaea).
  2. Peak values of carbon biomass for the six sites range from 1.1 mgC/dm2 to 4.2 mgC/dm2, and mean C:N ratios ranged from 3.7:1 to 10.1:1 (corresponding to 29% protein). Higher snail growth rates (computed as increase in mgC/100 snails/30 days) and greater fecundities correlate, beyond certain minimal levels of carbon biomass, to lower C:N ratios in the corresponding Aufwuchs samples.
  3. In discussing these nutritional aspects of Aufwuchs production, it is emphasized that freshwater macrophytes have C:N ratios well above 17:1, and are not much fed upon. In smaller bodies of fresh water, the most important sector of primary production is that of the Aufwuchs, and its nutritional quality in terms of lower C:N ratios is of unique significance to the bioenergetics of the second trophic level invertebrates.

The habitat use by stream fish can provide an understanding of this important component of species niches, and the changes in the availability of certain structures of instream habitats have a strong influence on the occurrence and abundance of fish species. In this study, we identified the interaction networks between fish and microhabitats in 19 streams of three watersheds from the Brazilian savanna, known as the “Cerrado”. We also investigated whether the connectance between fish species and microhabitats depends on either the species abundance or availability of microhabitats and verified whether the use of stream microhabitats vary among watersheds. The data for the fish were obtained using standardized fish collections and underwater (snorkeling) observations to record the association of fish species with 11 stream microhabitats. We used the incidence data to calculate the connectance of species with different microhabitats, a Spearman correlation analysis to test the dependence of the connectance to the species abundance and microhabitat availability, and an Analysis of Similarity to test whether the use of stream microhabitats by fish can vary among watersheds. In all of the watersheds, the tetras of the family Characidae used the largest number of microhabitats. The most‐used microhabitats by the fish watersheds were the lateral surface, column surface, and unconsolidated substrate, which were differentially used by the fish in each watershed, indicating the variable importance of microhabitats. Despite this observation, the fish occurred more frequently in the lateral microhabitats. When the data for all of the streams were combined, the species connectance was correlated with the species abundance. We also discuss the consequences of the elimination of certain bottom structures in the context of siltation, which is the main issue in the studied region. The results of our study allowed the detection of key microhabitat structures and can be used for the aquatic ecosystems restoration. (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A wide range of dimorphic species exhibit intraspecific differences in feeding ecology and habitat use; however, studies comparing resource partitioning between males and females and between age groups occur mainly at the community and species level. We here classified the main habitat of black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) –fir tree crown– into six microhabitats; examined the lichen-load of the microhabitats; and investigated the microhabitat use of age–sex groups within one-male units (OMUs: an adult male, several females, and juveniles) of R. bieti using instantaneous scanning sampling methods to test whether there is resource niche partitioning in social units of this sexually dimorphic primate in a reserve in Yunnan, China. Our results showed that adult females and juveniles often foraged in the outer layer of the fir tree crown, whereas adult males often foraged in the inner layer, closer to the trunk where food abundance was highest. Adult females and juveniles, however, both shifted microhabitat-use patterns to the inner layer of the fir tree crown when the adult male was absent from the tree. We suggested that the preference for and benefit of the central layer of fir tree crown lies in food availability, but that adult male competitively excluded group members. Microhabitat segregation may serve to maximize the fitness of the group members by reducing intragroup competition, while also increasing interindividual distance, thereby reducing the possible effects of scramble competition.  相似文献

This study examined how habitat associations changed with ontogeny in the tiger tail seahorse Hippocampus comes Cantor, 1850, over four reef zones in a coral reef ecosystem. Hippocampus comes showed ontogenetic differences in their use of habitat at the scale of reef zones (macrohabitat) and holdfasts (microhabitat). Across reef zones, juvenile size classes (25–105 mm standard length, L S) were most abundant in wild macroalgal beds ( Sargassum spp.) (55·7%), while adults (>105 mm L S) occupied both coral reefs (39·7%) and macroalgal beds (42·7%). Microhabitat use also varied with ontogeny. Juveniles generally used macroalgal holdfasts, while adults >135 mm L S used a greater diversity of specialized microhabitats that included branching sponges, branching corals and tall seagrass. Ontogenetic changes in habitat association, as well as size-related shifts in crypsis and aggregation, suggest that H. comes experiences fitness trade-offs that vary with size; juveniles may associate with habitat that reduces predation, while larger individuals may use distinct microhabitat in reef zones to optimize reproductive success. Results are discussed in the context of targeted exploitation, expanding artisanal mariculture, habitat damage from illegal fishing and reserve design.  相似文献

Branching scleractinians provide fish with critical refuge against predation. While in the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific regions they are conspicuous elements of the reef community, in the tropical Southwestern Atlantic (Brazil) branching corals are lacking and massive forms dominate. The only branching forms that occur in Brazil are stinging fire-corals of genus Millepora (Hydrozoa). Preliminary observations showed that several fish species seek refuge within fire-corals in Brazil, suggesting that they may replace the functional role played by scleractinians in other regions. Here, the association of fishes to individual fire-coral colonies (Millepora alcicornis and M. brasiliensis) and the relationship between fire-coral cover and fish abundance was studied in eastern Brazil. A total of 38 fish species from 18 families (37?% of the regional species pool) were recorded within fire-corals. Most records were of relatively small-bodied fishes and juveniles of large-bodied fishes. Comparative observations between day and night indicated that fire-corals are used as sleeping sites by a few species. Volume of colonies was positively correlated with fish abundance and species richness. Over a large spatial scale (tens of kilometers) fire-coral cover had a positive and significant influence on the abundance of three fish species only (Abudefduf saxatilis, Acanthurus coeruleus and Microspatodon chrysurus). Although physical attributes of colonies and fire-coral cover may help to account for some of the spatial variability in fish abundance, fire-corals may be considered as an alternative instead of a critical microhabitat for fish. The advantages and drawbacks of living in a branching and stinging environment are discussed.  相似文献

Galanthamine (GAL) is increasingly used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. We have attempted to develop a method of producing this alkaloid using in vitro cultures of Narcissus confusus plants. The “shoot-clump” culture in liquid medium was shown to be an appropriate method for the micropropagation of this bulbous plant. The complete process included three steps:
    1. culture of “twin-scales” starting from the bulbs;
    2. culture of the newly formed shoots in a medium for bud proliferation (Murashige Skoog+1 mg l-1 of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid+5 mg l-1 of benzyladenine), and
    3. culture of “shoot-clumps” in a liquid-shake medium. Here we describe the effect of the addition of trans-cinnamic acid, a precursor in the biosynthesis of the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, on the production of galanthamine and related alkaloids, and also on the growth of the “shoot-clump” culture. The production of galanthamine was found to be inhibited by the addition of the precursor, which promoted the production of the other alkaloid in the same biosynthetic pathway, N-formyl-norgalanthamine. The total production of galanthamine in the control cultures in day-long photoperiod was 2.50 mg per culture, of which 1.97 mg per culture were released into the medium.
