A study on development and survival of free-living stages of three important cattle ticks in Zambia,Amblyomma variegatum Fabricus,Boophilus decoloratus Koch, andRhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann, was carried out to complement studies on seasonal dynamics of parasitic stages.Different instars of engorged ticks were exposed under quasi-natural conditions according to the season in which they occur naturally. Generally, development rates of all stages of the three species were related to temperature, whilst the duration of survival was influenced mainly by rainfall and consequent relative humidity.Observations on the effect of age and climate on the behaviour of ticks on pastures were also made. BothA. variegatum andR. appendiculatus completed only one generation per year. InA. variegatum, engorged females detaching early in the adult season (August to October) undergo morphogenetic diapause. Adults ofR. appendiculatus emerging between August and October enter a period of behavioural diapause before becoming active in December. These mechanisms effectively synchronize the life-cycles of these two univoltine species. The one-host tick,B. decoloratus, is able to complete three to five generations each year with no indication of seasonal synchronization.  相似文献

We conducted laboratory and field experiments to elucidate the life history of Ixodiphagus hookeri, a parasitoid of the ixodid tick Amblyomma variegatum in Western Kenya. Ixodiphagus hookeri females oviposited in unfed host nymphs as well as engorged nymphs, but rarely in engorged larvae. While I. hookeri developed to adults in engorged nymphs, the eggs laid in unfed nymphs disappeared within 2 days after oviposition. As temperature increased, development time of I. hookeri from oviposition to adult emergence in engorged nymphs decreased from 46 days at 23 °C to 35 days at 28 °C, and their immature survival in engorged nymphs decreased from 67% at 23 °C to 22% at 28 °C. No parasitoid adult emerged from hosts at 30 °C. Individual hosts parasitized by single females produced 42–53 adult wasps, 73% of which were females. As a typical pro-ovigenic species, I. hookeri females had an average of 84 mature eggs at emergence and lived only for a few days. When laboratory-reared, unfed nymphs of A. variegatum were attached to cattle for 4–9 days in subsistence farmers’ fields in Western Kenya, 25% of the engorged nymphs and 4% of the unfed nymphs on cattle were parasitized by I. hookeri, demonstrating that I. hookeri females search for and oviposit in A. variegatum nymphs on cattle. Unlike other strains of I. hookeri that overwinter as eggs in unfed nymphs, I. hookeri could continuously reproduce throughout the year in Western Kenya.  相似文献

Biological data of three generations of Amblyomma tigrinum in the laboratory are reported and the suitability of different host species for immature ticks are compared. Grouping the three generations, infestations by both the larval and nymphal stages were performed on chickens (Gallus gallus), wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus), rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus),wild mice (Calomys callosus), dogs (Canis familiaris) and opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Only dogs were used for infestations by adult ticks. Tick developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27°C and RH 90%. The proportion of engorged larvae recovered from chickens (21.7% of the exposed larvae) was significantly larger (p<0.001) than those from the five mammal species used in the infestations (maximum of 3.1%). A significant larger (p<0.01) proportion of engorged larvae successfully molted after being fed on chickens than on mammal hosts. The proportion of engorged nymphs recovered from chickens (28.8% of the exposed nymphs) was significantly larger (p<0.001) than those from mammal hosts (range: 0–2.1%). Larvae showed similar feeding periods on exposure to different host species, except for those larvae fed on C. callosus, which showed significantly longer (p<0.001) feeding periods. Engorged larvae detachment peaked on the 5th feeding day, followed by the 6th day, on all hosts except for C. callosus. Larval premolt periods were similar for engorged ticks exposed to different host species, except for larvae fed on dogs, which showed significantly longer (p<0.001) premolt periods. Host detachment of engorged nymphs peaked on the 6th feeding day on chickens. Although nymphal detachment on rats peaked on the 8th day, only 15 nymphs were recovered from this host species. In a sample of 144 F3 nymphs fed on chickens no significant difference (p>0.10) was found between the feeding or premolt periods of 82 males and 62 females, but female nymphs were significantly heavier (p<0.005) than male nymphs. Sixteen engorged females (61.5% of the exposed ticks) were recovered after being fed on dogs, and all these females laid viable eggs. Chickens, the only avian host, were the most suitable host when compared with the five mammal species. Dogs were demonstrated to be a suitable host for adults of A. tigrinum, which is consistent with, several reports of adult A. tigrinum ticks parasitizing dogs in different areas of South America. Our results reinforce that in these same areas avian species are the major hosts for immature stages of this tick species. Rabbits infested with different stages ofAmblyomma variegatum Fabricius, 1794 became resistant to subsequent infestations by the same tick. Resistance was manifested by a reduction of 73.6% in the mean engorged weight of female ticks by the 3rd infestation. By the 5th infestation, only 70% of the nymphs engorged and their mean engorged weight was 57.7% of that of nymphs fed on tick-naive control rabbits. In the case of larvae, there was a 22.8% reduction in their mean engorged weight by the 6th infestation. Based on increases in body length while feeding on tick-naive rabbits, the nymphs could be divided into four feeding categories, i.e. Nl (unfed), N2, N3 and N4 (increasing states of engorgement). While 92–96% of ticks which dropped from susceptible rabbits fitted into feeding category N4, only 28% of those that dropped from tick-resistant rabbits fitted into that category. The remainder of the ticks fitted into categories N3 (60%) and N2 (12%). The majority of those ticks with reduced weight developed into adults which had an atypical scutal ornamentation pattern, in that an additional pair of lateral spots was regularly observed on the males. The females of such ticks deposited small numbers of eggs from which no larvae hatched.  相似文献

The susceptibility of unfed and fed stages of larvae, nymphs and adult females of Amblyomma variegatum ticks were tested using Shaws filter paper dip method against four acaricides; chlorfenvinphos and dioxathion, chlorfenvinphos, gamma benzene hexachloride and amitraz at four different concentrations including the recommended dose rates. Based on their lethal concentrations (LC50 & LC90) chlorfenvinphos and dioxathion combined and chlorfenvinphos alone placed first and second, respectively, in all stages except at the unfed nymphal stage where gamma benzene hexachloride topped with a LC50 of 0.001629, while chlorfenvinphos and dioxathion combined and chlorfenvinphos alone had LC50 of 0.001794 and 0.002258, respectively. Amitraz appeared to have a quick knock-down effect on larvae and nymphs but at the recommended dose rate, showed no mortality of the ticks at that stage. However, at a concentration of 0.040%, amitraz showed a 100% inhibition of oviposition and hatching of laid eggs. Gamma benzene hexachloride produced only 66% inhibition of oviposition while chlorfenvinphos and dioxathion combined and chlorfenvinphos alone produced 100% inhibition of oviposition at their recommended dose rates. Fed nymphs were more susceptible than the unfed nymphs. The Bm86 antigen, as originally identified in Boophilus microplus, is the basis of commercial tick vaccines against this tick species. The potential for using this antigen or homologues of the antigen in vaccination against other tick species has been assessed. We have conducted vaccine trials in cattle using the B. microplus-derived recombinant Bm86 vaccine (TickGARD) using pairs of vaccinated calves and control calves. These were infested with B. microplus and Boophilus decoloratus larvae simultaneously. For both species, the numbers of engorged female adult ticks, their weight and egg-laying capacity were all reduced, leading to a reduction in reproductive capacity of 74% for B. microplus and 70% for B. decoloratus. Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum ticks were fed both as immatures as well as adults on vaccinated calves and non-vaccinated controls. There was an overall 50% reduction in the total weight of nymphs engorging on vaccinated calves, and a suggestion of a subsequent effect on feeding adults. For Hyalomma dromedarii there was a 95% reduction in the number of nymphs engorging and a further 55% reduction in weight of those ticks surviving. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum ticks were fed simultaneously both as immatures and subsequently as adults. There was no evidence for a significant vaccination effect. Finally, the amino acid sequence of a Bm86 homologue found in H. a. anatolicum unequivocally demonstrated the conservation of this molecule in this species. Our strategy for the development of multivalent anti-tick vaccines is discussed in relation to these findings.  相似文献

Abstract. The overall prevalence of Theileria species, mainly, if not exclusively, T.annulata, in 901 Hyalomma detritum detritum collected from cattle in the Doukkala region of Morocco over a period of 2 years was 21.5%. The quantity of infection (number of sporoblasts per infected tick) followed the negative binomial distribution with between one and 250 sporoblasts per infected tick. Infected ticks were found in eight of fourteen areas examined whilst T.annulata was present in all fourteen. There were significant differences in both the prevalence and the quantity of infection between ticks collected from different farms, and between nymphs collected in the autumn from these farms, and moulted in the laboratory, and adults collected in the following summer. The prevalence, but not the quantity, of infection was higher in female than in male ticks. No correlations were established between infection of engorged nymphs and the breed, sex and Theileria piroplasm parasitaemia of the host animal. However, calves infected a greater proportion of nymphs than adult cattle and the heavier the infestation of nymphs on an animal, up to a plateau, the higher the prevalence of infection in those nymphs. There were no differences in infection between ticks moulted at 24oC and 37oC, after the engorged nymphs had been stored at 18oC to simulate over-wintering.  相似文献

We report biological data of two generations of Amblyomma triste in laboratory and compared the suitability of different host species. Infestations by larval and nymphal stages were performed on guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), chickens (Gallus gallus), rats (Rattus norvegicus), rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), wild mice (Calomys callosus), dogs (Canis familiaris) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Infestations by adult ticks were performed on dogs, capybaras and rabbits. Tick developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27 °C and RH 90%. Guinea pigs were the most suitable hosts for larvae and nymphs, followed by chickens. The remaining host species were less suitable for immature ticks as fewer engorged ticks were recovered from them. Mean larval feeding periods varied from 3.8 to 4.7 d between different host species. Mean larval premolt periods ranged from 8.9 to 10.4 d. Nymphal mean feeding periods varied from 4.2 to 6.2 d for ticks fed on different host species. Premolt period of male nymphs (mean: 15.4 d) was significantly longer than that of female nymphs (14.7 d). Female nymphs were significantly heavier than male nymphs. The overall sex ratio of the adult ticks emerged from nymphs was 0.9:1 (M:F). Capybaras were the most suitable host for the tick adult stage as significantly more engorged females were recovered from them and these females were significantly heavier than those recovered from dogs or rabbits. The life cycle of A. triste in laboratory could be completed in an average period of 155 d. The potential role of guinea pigs, birds and capybaras, as hosts for A. triste in nature, is discussed. Ten known or potential components of the aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAP) of the ticksAmblyomma hebraeum andA. variegatum, as well as a mixture of these components and extracts of prefed males of the two species, were tested as attachment stimulants for nymphs. Unfed nymphs were confined in linen bags on the ears of rabbits that had been treated with the test compounds, mixture or extracts; the numbers attached were recorded after 24 h. InA. hebraeum, attachment was induced by four compounds (2-methyl propanoic acid, methyl salicylate,o-nitrophenol and salicylaldehyde), the mixture and extracts from both species. InA. variegatum, attachment was induced by three compounds (methyl salicylate,o-nitrophenol and salicylaldehyde), the mixture and extracts from both species. Methyl salicylate ando-nitrophenol are primary components of the AAP of bothA. hebraeum andA. variegatum. 2-methyl propanoic acid is a species-specific attachment stimulant forA. hebraeum. Salicylaldehyde, a phenolic compound, is not a naturally occurring AAP component. Nymphs of both species respond to fewer attachment stimulants than the adults and, as shown by their respective host ranges, are less dependent on the AAP in the regulation of attachment than the adults.  相似文献

As part of the epidemiological studies aimed at developing an East Coast fever (ECF) immunisation control strategy, which combines an infection and treatment method with strategic tick control, a countrywide tick survey was carried out in both the dry and the wet season to determine the abundance and the dynamics of the tick populations infesting cattle in Rwanda. Six Ixodid tick species where identified from a total of 12,814 tick specimens collected. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, the main vector of ECF was the most abundant (91.8%) followed by Boophilus decoloratus (6.1%) and Ambyomma variegatum (1.2%). Few ticks from the three other less economically important Ixodid species (Rhipicephalus compositus, R. evertsi evertsi and Ixodes cavipalpus) were recovered. Both adult and immature stages of the most dominant tick species were found to be widespread with a year round presence. The numbers of ticks were high in low land and medium zones and declined markedly in the higher regions of Rwanda. The geographical distribution of various tick species throughout the country and their epidemiological implications are discussed.  相似文献

InA. variegatum, aggregation was inhibited if compounds that do not occur naturally in the AAP of the species were included in mixtures. InA. hebraeum, phenylacetaldehyde appeared to act as an arrestant for ticks that had been attracted to release sites by other compounds.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi on Ixodes ricinus ticks in relation to the tick stage, engorgement and season. Ticks were collected from the vegetation, from small rodents and from deer. All entomopathogenic fungi found belonged to the Hyphomycetes. Paecilomyces farinosus and Verticillium lecanii were the predominant species. Other species, found only on engorged females were: Beauveria bassiana, B. brongniartii, P. fumosoroseus and V. aranearum. Eight out of 1833 ticks collected from the vegetation and three out of 269 engorged nymphs were infected with fungi. Thirty-three out of 149 engorged females were infected, whereas males and engorged larvae were not infected. Throughout the season, a significantly higher proportion of ticks collected in autumn were infected. Entomopathogenic fungi may have a significant impact on the size of the I. ricinus population, since females were the most frequently infected stage.  相似文献

The survival rate of Amblyomma variegatum engorged nymphs was studied in 9 cohorts released during the first part of the dry season (i.e. the nymph infestation period in the region) and placed on a natural savannah, either in plastic containers or in cages driven into the soil and open at the bottom. All nymphs put in the containers placed in the sun died rapidly, while a high moulting rate (94%) was observed in containers placed in the shade. This rate reached 63% for the ticks released in the cages. The moulting period lasted from less than 4 to more than 6 weeks, depending on the release period: unfed adults are therefore present in the pasture 4–5 months before the onset of the adult infestation period. The survival rate of the unfed adults did not vary according to the release period of the nymphs: at the beginning of the rainy season, 20–25% of the adult ticks were still alive in the cages. Very important variations in survival and disappearance rates were observed according to the place where the cages had been installed: within a few metres, the survival rate could vary from 0 to 90%, presumably because of the activity of predators which removed also dead tick from the plastic containers. Predators may then have a great but highly variable and unpredictable impact on the natural population of A. variegatum adults. Engorged nymphs released on pasture were able to find suitable micro-habitats allowing survival, covered up to 2.8 metres to reach them, and grouped together at the neck or root network of bushes and grass clumps, sometimes burrowing to a depth of 10 cm.  相似文献

In this study, engorged Amblyomma lepidum ticks were found to drop off in two peaks, one in the morning and one in the evening. Most larvae and females engorged during the morning hours between 06.00 h and 10.00 h with a peak around 08.00 h, whereas the majority of the nymphs dropped in the evening between 18.00 h and 24.00 h with the peak around 22.00 h. Although the effect of time on drop-off patterns of the ticks was statistically significant (p≤ 0.001), there were no significant seasonal influences. Survival of unfed stages of A. lepidum was also studied and was found to increase from larvae to adult ticks. The longest survival periods of 10, 11 and 14 weeks were recorded during the wet season for larvae, nymphs and adults, respectively. It is concluded that environmental conditions required for survival of A. lepidum are optimal only during the wet season and that during other seasons the tick depends primarily on prevailing micro-climatic conditions for its survival.  相似文献

Entomogenous Fungi as Promising Biopesticides for Tick Control   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
When ticks were sealed in nylon tetrapacks and infected with the entomogenous fungi, Beauveria bassiana and Metarizium anisopliae and maintained in potted grass in the field, the fungal oil formulations (109 conidia per ml) induced 100% mortality in larvae of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum, whereas mortalities in nymphs varied between 80–100% and in adults 80–90%. The aqueous formulations (109 conidia per ml) induced mortalities of 40–50% and reductions in egg hatchability of 68% (B. bassiana) and 48% (M. anisopliae) when sprayed on Boophilus decoloratus engorging on cattle. The strains of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae isolated from naturally infected ticks were also found to induce high mortalities in both R. appendiculatus and A.variegatum in tetrapacks placed in potted grass. Both aqueous and oil-based formulations were found to be effective, although the latter induced higher mortalities. These fungal strains in aqueous formulation (108 conidia per ml) suppressed on-host populations of adult R. appendiculatus by 80% (B. bassiana) and 92% (M. anisopliae) when sprayed on tick-infested grass once per month for a period of 6 months. The feasibility of using entomogenous fungi for tick control in the field is discussed.  相似文献

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus was determined in ticks I. persulcatus and I. pavlovskyi, collected from humans attacked by ticks in city parks, forest-parks in city outskirts, and in suburban forests, by the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay method (ELISA). It was found that, in spite of I. pavlovskyi being the dominating species in Tomsk and its suburbs, the majority of ticks that attacked humans belonged to I. persulcatus. In ticks that possessed no sighs of the beginning of engorgement (hungry ticks), infestation with TBE virus was revealed by ELISA method less frequently. Percentage of I. persulcatus and I. pavlovskyi, infested with TBE virus, constituted 9.43 % and 3.7 %, respectively. In partly engorged ticks, it constituted 48.78 % and 35.0 %, respectively. In suburban forests, humans were also attacked by I. persulcatus more frequently. In this species, the fraction of infested specimens constituted 12.73 % and 41.54 % in partly engorged and hungry ticks, respectively. In I. pavlovskyi, this percentage constituted 6.06 % and 25 %, respectively. In other words, in all the groups examined, the fraction of infested ticks was noticeably lower in I. pavlovskyi; at the same time, the TBE virus is significantly more frequently revealed in partly engorged ticks.  相似文献

The attraction of nymphs of the ticksAmblyomma hebraeum andA. variegatum to CO2 alone and CO2 together with the male-produced aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAP) was investigated. Matching experiments on the attraction of the adults of the two species were run for comparison. Nymphs ofA. hebraeum were strongly attracted to sources of CO2 and CO2/AAP at distances of 10 and 15 m. At distances of 20 and 25 m significantly more nymphs were attracted to CO2/AAP than to CO2 alone. Adults ofA. hebraeum were not attracted to CO2 alone at any distance; these ticks were attracted to CO2 and AAP together for distances of up to 25 m. The patterns of attraction of nymphs and adults ofA. variegatum at 10 m were similar to those recorded inA. hebraeum.  相似文献

Cerrado biome, the South American savannah, covers about 2 million km2 and is very rich in endemic species but threatened by agriculture. In this report free-living tick species are presented, and their seasonal and relative distribution within the various phytophysiognomies in a small Cerrado reserve in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Overall 2,694 free-living ticks were found during a 2 years sampling period with CO2 traps and cloth dragging. Of these, 73.5% were Amblyomma cajennense and 0.6% Amblyomma dubitatum. All other ticks (25.9%) were retained as Amblyomma spp. Adults of A. cajennense peaked in spring, the nymphs in winter of both years. Amblyomma larval clusters were found in autumn and winter. Adult ticks (46.7%) and nymphs (39.5%) were most often found in woodlands, whereas most larval clusters were found in valley-side marshes (39%). Amblyomma cajennense, Anocentor nitens, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplusand Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks were found on domestic animals from neighboring properties. Search for Rickettsia in the hemolymph of 497 A. cajennense and one A. dubitatum ticks yielded negative results. Results confirmed earlier reports on the overwhelming prevalence of A. cajennense ticks in the Cerrado biome of Brazil and added information to habitat preferences of this tick species, a major vector in Brazil of the Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  相似文献

A hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, was found to be heavily infested with larval and nymphal Ixodes ricinus in a forest park in Co. Galway, Ireland. A large proportion of the ticks that engorged and detached were infected with the spirochacte, Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of human Lyme borreliosis. The identity of these spirochaetes was confirmed by immunofluorescent assay with B. burgdorferi-specific monoclonal antibody and by polymerase chain reaction test and they were transmitted from the hedgehog to laboratory-reared ticks and from the ticks obtained from the hedgehog to gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The high infection rate of the larvae that fed on the hedgehog in comparison with unfed larvae from the same habitat was interpreted as strong evidence that this host species is reservoir competent. Since hedgehogs can evidently feed adult ticks as well as many immature stages, they may well have an important role in the ecology of Lyme borreliosis in some habitats.  相似文献

Initial infestations of Amblyomma variegatum larvae and nymphs, on rabbits and sheep respectively, produced inflammatory reactions in the host's skin; repeated infestations resulted in an increase in development of delayed type hypersensitive reactions. Dermatophilus congolensis cocci were applied in titrated doses to hosts at sites of inflammatory or hypersensitive reactions to ticks, and to control hosts with no exposure to ticks. We assessed the resulting infections for three weeks and found no significant difference between the infections on the three groups. We conclude that the local effects of the feeding of immature stages of this tick do not influence the pathogenesis of dermatophilosis.  相似文献
