The performance of down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) system treating UASB reactor effluent at different sponge volume of 38.2, 28.7, 19.1 and 9.6% was investigated. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) and flow rate were kept constant at 2.6 h and 0.46 m3/day, respectively. The results obtained indicated that reducing the sponge volume of the DHS system from 38.2 to 19.1% significantly decreased the removal efficiency of CODtotal from 80 ± 8 to 62 ± 14%; CODsoluble from 71.2 ± 10 to 53.7 ± 18% and CODparticulate from 86 ± 10 to 62 ± 15%. With further reduction of the sponge volume down to 9.6%, the removal efficiency was dropped to 54 ± 15% for CODtotal; 44.1 ± 14% for CODsoluble and 42 ± 12% for CODparticulate. Likewise, the nitrification efficiency and fecal coliform (FC) removal was strongly affected by decreasing the sponge volume of the DHS system, i.e., the nitrification efficiency was dropped by a value of 48.3% when reducing the sponge volume of the DHS system from 38.2 to 19.1%. At sponge volume of 38.2%, the DHS system removes 2.6 ± 0.3 log10/100 ml of FC which is significantly higher than that at sponge volume of 28.7, 19.1 and 9.6%. Accordingly, it is recommended to design and operate such a system at a bulk sponge volume not exceeding 38.2% of the total reactor volume and at an HRT of 2.6 h.  相似文献

The performance of a laboratory-scale sewage treatment system composed of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) at a temperature of (22–35 °C) was evaluated. The entire treatment system was operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT’s) of 13.3, 10 and 5.0 h. An overall reduction of 80–86% for CODtotal; 51–73% for CODcolloidal and 20–55% for CODsoluble was found at a total HRT of 5–10 h, respectively. By prolonging the HRT to 13.3 h, the removal efficiencies of CODtotal, CODcolloidal and CODsoluble increased up to 92, 89 and 80%, respectively. However, the removal efficiency of CODsuspended in the combined system remained unaffected when increasing the total HRT from 5 to 10 h and from 10 to 13.3 h. This indicates that, the removal of CODsuspended was independent on the imposed HRT. Ammonia-nitrogen removal in MBBR treating UASB reactor effluent was significantly influenced by organic loading rate (OLR). 62% of ammonia was eliminated at OLR of 4.6 g COD m−2 day−1. The removal efficiency was decreased by a value of 34 and 43% at a higher OLR’s of 7.4 and 17.8 g COD m−2 day−1, respectively. The mean overall residual counts of faecal coliform in the final effluent were 8.9 × 104 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 13.3 h, 4.9 × 105 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 10 h and 9.4 × 105 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 5.0 h, corresponding to overall log10 reduction of 2.3, 1.4 and 0.7, respectively. The discharged sludge from UASB–MBBR exerts an excellent settling property. Moreover, the mean value of the net sludge yield was only 6% in UASB reactor and 7% in the MBBR of the total influent COD at a total HRT of 13.3 h. Accordingly, the use of the combined UASB–MBBR system for sewage treatment is recommended at a total HRT of 13.3 h.  相似文献

A two-step anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR-1 and ABR-2) for H2 production from municipal food waste (MFW) was investigated at a temperature of 26 °C. In ABR-1, the average yield of H2 at an HRT of 26 h and OLR of 58 kg COD/m3 d was 250 ml H2/g VS removed. As unexpected; the H2 production in the ABR-2 was further increased up to 370 ml H2/gVS removed at a HRT of 26 h and OLR of 35 kgCOD/m3 d. The total H2 yield in the two-step process was estimated to be 4.9 mol H2/mol hexose. The major part of H2 production in the ABR-1 was due to the conversion of CODparticulate (36%). In the ABR-2 the H2 yield was mainly due to the conversion of COD in the soluble form (76%). Based on these results MFW could be ideal substrate for H2 production in a two-step ABR processes.  相似文献

The catalytically oxidized olive mill wastewater (OMW) was subjected to continuous anaerobic treatment using two treatment schemes. The 1st step in both schemes was an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor (2 0 l). The 2nd step was either a hybrid UASB reactor or a classical one (1 0 l, each). The 1st stage was operated at constant hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h. The organic loading rate (OLR) varied from 3.4 to 4.8 kgCOD/m3 d depending on the quality of the pretreated wastewater. The results obtained indicated that, the 1st step UASB reactor achieved a COD percentage removal value of 53.9%. Corresponding total BOD5 and TSS removal were 51.5% and 68.3%, respectively. The results obtained indicated that the hybrid UASB reactor as a 2nd step produced better quality effluent as compared to the classical one. This could be attributed to the presence of the packing curtain sponge with active biomass in the sedimentation part of hybrid UASB reactor which minimizes suspended solids washout, consequently enhancement of the efficiency of the reactor.Available data showed that a two stage system consisting of a classical and a hybrid UASB reactor operated at a total HRT of 48 h and OLR of 2.0 kgCOD/m3 d provided promising results. Removal values of CODtotal, BOD5 total, TOC, VFA, oil and grease were 83%, 84%, 81%, 93% and 81%, respectively. Based on the available data, the use of a two stage anaerobic system consisting of a classical UASB reactor followed by a hybrid UASB as a post-treatment step for catalytically oxidized OMW is recommended.  相似文献

The performance of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) in combination with down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) system for sewage treatment at an average wastewater temperature of 15 °C has been investigated for 6 months. The results showed that a combined system operated at a total HRT of 10.7 h and total SRT of 88 days represents a cost effective sewage treatment process. The average CODtotal and BOD5 total concentrations measured in the final effluent of the total system (UASB + DHS) amounted to 43 and 3.0 mg/l, respectively, corresponding to the overall removal efficiency of 90% for CODtotal and 98% for BOD5 total. The total process provided a final effluent containing a low concentration of 12 mg/l for TSS.Eighty-six percent of ammonia was eliminated at space loading rate of 1.6 kg COD/m3 d and HRT of 2.7 h. The calculated nitrification rate of the DHS system according to the nitrate and nitrite production amounted to 0.18 kg/m3 d. The removal of F. coliform in the UASB reactor only amounted to 0.86 log10. On the other hand, the F. coliform concentration dropped substantially, i.e. by 2.6 log10 in the DHS system resulting only 2.7 × 103/100 ml in the final effluent. The calculated average sludge production for UASB operated at an HRT of 8.0 h amounted to 30 g TSS/d, corresponding to sludge yield coefficient of 0.2 g TSS/g total COD removed, while it was indeed very low only 6.0 g TSS/d corresponding to sludge yield coefficient of 0.09 g TSS/g total COD removed, for DHS system. The DHS profile results revealed that in the first and second segment of DHS system, the CODtotal, BOD5 total and TSS was eliminated, followed by the oxidation of ammonia in the next segments.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic anaerobic biodegradation of wine distillery wastewater (vinasses) in a laboratory fluidised bed reactor (AFB) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing organic loading rate on the efficiency of AFB and to report on its steady-state performance. Moreover, in order to evaluate treatment efficiency and to investigate fermentation kinetics in an AFB reactor, experimental data were used to estimate the ‘active biomass’ concentration using an autocatalytic kinetic model proposed in this paper, since viable biomass in AFB reactors is very difficult to measure experimentally. The AFB reactor was subjected to a program of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention time (HRTs) of 2.5–0.37 days and organic loading rate (OLRs) up to 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day in order to evaluate its treatment capacity. The AFB reactor was initially operated with organic loading rate of 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day and HRT of 2.5 days. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was found to be 96.5% in the reactor while the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 1.08 m3/m3digester/day. Over 94 days operating period, an OLR of 32 kgCOD/m3/day at a food-to-micro-organisms (F:M) ratio of 0.55 kgCOD/kgVSatt/day was achieved with 81.5% COD removal efficiency in the experimental AFB reactor. At this moment, the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 9.0 m3/m3digester/day. The proposed kinetic model is able to estimate kinetic constants of the biodegradation process: non-biodegradable substrate (Snb) and active adhered biomass concentration (Xa). The parameters of the model were obtained by the curve-fitting method to the proposed kinetic model using the COD as substrate of the anaerobic process and assuming a maximum specific μmax: 0.72 per day. The comparison of the measured concentration of volatile attached solids (VSatt) with the estimated ‘active’ biomass concentration indicated that extremely high ‘active biomass’ concentrations can be maintained in the system because biofilm thickness is limited by the liquid flow rate applied. This is due to the fact that the anaerobic fluidised bed system retains the growth support medium in suspension by drag forces exerted by upflowing wastewater, and the distribution of biomass holdup (in the form of a biofilm) is thus relatively uniform.  相似文献

The new attached growth sponge tray bioreactor (STB) was evaluated at different operating conditions for removing organics and nutrients from primary treated sewage effluent. This STB was also assessed when using as a pre-treatment prior to micro-filtration (MF) for reducing membrane fouling. At a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 40 min, the STB could remove up to 92% of DOC and 40-56% of T-N and T-P at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.4 kg COD/m3 sponge day. This OLR is the best for the STB as compared to the OLRs of 0.6, 1.2 and 3.6 kg COD/m3 sponge day. At 28 mL/min of flow velocity (FV), STB achieved the highest efficiencies with 92% of DOC, 87.4% of T-P, and 54.8% of T-N removal. Finally, at the optimal OLR and FV, the STB could remove almost 90% of organic and nutrient, significantly reduce membrane fouling with HRT of only 120 min.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic biodegradation of a mixed feed composed of vinasses and cutting oil wastewater (COW) in a laboratory upflow anaerobic fixed-film reactor (UAFF) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing the percentage of cutting oil wastewater in the feed. The UAFF reactor was initially started-up with vinasses as the only carbon source at an organic loading rate of 22.3 kg COD/m3 day and HRT of 0.8 days using porous particles as the support (SIRAN). The percentage of organic matter composed of vinasses was subsequently reduced while increasing the amount of cutting oil until 100% of cutting oil wastewater was added in the feed. Four stages were considered in the study (0, 42.4, 66.6 and 100% COW). HRT was adjusted in order to maintain an approximately constant organic loading rate applied to the system. Under theses conditions, the UAFF reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation with hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range 0.8–0.15 days and organic loading rates (OLR) between 22.3 and 14.9 kg COD/m3 day in order to evaluate the treatment capacity of the system. The COD removal efficiency was found to be 87% COD and 94.6% TOC in the reactor when treating vinasses at 22.3 kg COD/m3 day. The volumetric methane level produced in the digester reached 0.45 m3/m3 day. After an operating period of 120 days, the reactor was fed with cutting oil wastewater (COW) as the only source of carbon. An OLR of 16.7 kg COD/m3 day was achieved with 85.8% COD removal efficiency (58.1%TOC) in the experimental UAFF reactor. Under these conditions the volumetric methane produced in the digester was negligible.Hence, COW can be removed, if not degraded, by anaerobic treatment in the presence of a biodegradable co-substrate. Wine vinasses degradation creates conditions for non-biological removal of COW constituents. More studies are necessary in order to test the mechanisms of organic removal when biodegradation apparently had ceased. Also, toxicity assays of COW are necessary to evaluate the toxicity to the methanogenic community.  相似文献

Anaerobic treatment of wastewater from a selected seafood processing plant was conducted at organic loading rates (OLR) ranging from 0.3 to 1.8 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m3.day and hydraulic retention times (HRT) ranging from 36 to 6 days. COD reduction decreased with increasing OLR. More than 75% COD reduction could be maintained up to an OLR of about 1 kg COD/m3.day with an HRT of 11 days. An OLR of 1.3 kg COD/m3.day corresponding to an HRT of 6.6 days gave maximal biogas productivity of 1.5 m3/m3.day or 1.3 m3 biogas/kg COD with a 65% COD reduction. If the HRT was kept constant at 11 days, an OLR of 1.3 kg COD/m3.day achieved maximal biogas productivity (1.1 m3/m3.day) and yield (0.75 m3/kg COD) and a 60% COD reduction for treatment of tuna condensate.P. The results of a two-phase anaerobic system using anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs), treating low-strength wastewater (COD  500 mg/L) with a high fraction of particulate organic matter (70%, COD basis), are presented. Two reactors in series were used; the first one was hydrolytic–acidogenic, while the second one was methanogenic. This configuration was proposed to promote high efficiency solids removal. During the experiment, 69% and 50% efficiencies of total COD removal were obtained for OLRs of 0.63 and 1.22 kgCOD/(m3 d), respectively. Values of the solubilized organic fraction (SOF) achieved in the hydrolytic–acidogenic reactor were within the range of 0.3–0.6 gCODsolubilized/gpCODremoved, and the average acidified organic fraction (AOF) was 0.6 gCODVFA-produced/gsCODfed. The methanogenic reactor had a VFA removal fraction (VFARF) between 0.4 and 0.6 gCODVFA-removed/gCODVFA-fed for the OLR of 0.63 and 1.22. The two-phase ASBR system is suitable, and can be implemented, for the anaerobic treatment of this kind of wastewater.  相似文献

Cow manure with bedding is renewable organic biomass available around the year on dairy farms. Developing efficient and cost-effective psychrophilic dry anaerobic digestion (PDAD) processes could contribute to solving farm-related environmental, energy, and manure management problems in cold-climate regions. This study was to increase the organic loading rate (OLR), fed to a novel psychrophilic (20 °C) dry anaerobic digestion of 27 % total solid dairy manure (cow feces and wheat straw) in sequence batch reactor (PDAD-SBR), by 133 to 160 %. The PDAD-SBR process operated at treatment cycle length of 21 days and OLR of 7.0 and 8.0 g total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD)?kg?1 inoculum day?1 (5.2?±?0.1 and 5.8?±?0.0 g volatile solids (VS)?kg?1 inoculum day?1) for four successive cycles (84 days) produced average specific methane yields (SMYs) of 147.1?±?17.2 and 143.2?±?11.7 normalized liters (NL)?CH4?kg?1 VS fed, respectively. PDAD of cow feces and wheat straw is possible with VS-based inoculum-to-substrate ratio of 1.45 at OLR of 8.0 g TCOD kg?1 inoculum day?1. Hydrolysis was the limiting step reaction. The VS removal averaged around 57.4?±?0.5 and 60.5?±?5.7 % at OLR 7.0 and 8.0 g TCOD kg?1 inoculum day?1, respectively.  相似文献

In the present study, improved moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was applied to enhance the nutrient removal ability of the municipal wastewater. A total of 18 indigenous bacterial isolates were screened from the sewage sludge sample and nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase and hydroxylamine oxidase was analyzed. The strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa NU1 and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus K12 produced 0.87 ± 0.05 U/mg and 0.52 ± 0.12 U/mg hydroxylamine oxidase, 1.023 ± 0.062 U/mg and 1.29 ± 0.07 U/mg nitrite reductase, and 0.789 ± 0.031 U/mg and 1.07 ± 0.13 U/mg nitrate reductase. Nitrogen and phosphate removal improved by the addition of nutrient sources and achieved > 80% removal rate. pH and temperature of the medium also affected nutrient removal and improved removal was achieved at optimum level (p < 0.05). MBBR was designed with R1 (aerobic), R2 and R3 (anoxic) reactors. MBBR reactors removed acceptable level phosphorus removal properties up to 7.2 ± 3.8%, 42.4 ± 4.6%, and 84.2 ± 13.1% in the R1, R2, R3 and R4 reactors, respectively. Denitrification rate showed linear relationship at increasing concentrations nitrogen content in the reactor and denitrification rate was 1.43 g NO2-N /m2/day at 1.5 g NO2-N /m2/day. Dehydrogenase activity was assayed in all reactors and maximum amount was detected in the aerobic biofilm reactor. Based on the present findings, MBBRs and the selected bacterial strains are useful for the degradation domestic wastewater with minimum working area.  相似文献

An on-site pilot-scale static granular bed reactor (SGBR) system was evaluated for treating wastewater from a slaughterhouse in Iowa. The study evaluated SGBR reactor suitability for slaughterhose wastewater having high particulate COD concentration (7.9 ± 4.3 g COD/L) at 0.3–1.4 m3/m2/day of the surface loading rates. High organic removal efficiency (over 95% of TSS and VSS removal) was obtained due to the consistent treatability of SGBR system during operation at HRTs of 48, 36, 30, 24, and 20 h. The average effluent TSS, VSS, COD, soluble COD, and BOD5 concentrations were 84, 71, 301,197, and 87 mg/L, respectively. An effective backwash procedure was performed once every 7–14 days to waste a portion of the accumulated solids in the system. This procedure limited the increase in hydraulic head loss and maintained the system stability. COD removal efficiencies greater than 95% were achieved at organic loading rates ranging from 0.77 to 12.76 kg/m3/day.  相似文献

This study aims at evaluating the performance of a two-chambered continuously fed microbial fuel cell with new Ti–TiO2 electrodes for bioelectricity generation from young landfill leachate at varying strength of wastewater (1–50 COD g/L) and hydraulic retention time (HRT, 0.25–2 days). The COD removal efficiency in the MFC increased with time and reached 45 % at full-strength leachate (50 g/L COD) feeding. The current generation increased with increasing leachate strength and decreasing HRT up to organic loading rate of 100 g COD/L/day. The maximum current density throughout the study was 11 A/m2 at HRT of 0.5 day and organic loading rate of 67 g COD/L/day. Coulombic efficiency (CE) decreased from 57 % at feed COD concentration of 1 g/L to less than 1 % when feed COD concentration was 50 g/L. Increase in OLR resulted in increase in power output but decrease in CE.  相似文献

The use of surface flow (SFCWs) and subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs) for the treatment of combined sewer overflows was assessed at pilot scale. Synthetic wastewater was applied in three batches with decreasing concentrations to mimic concentration profiles that are obtained in the field during overflow events. Three simulated combined sewer overflows were applied on each wetland. Composite water samples (60 in total) were taken for a period of 8 days to study the removal of total nitrogen (Ntot), NH4–N, NO3–N, total COD (CODtot) and total phosphorus. Redox potential, which was monitored at various locations along the wetlands, was more negative in the SSFCWs. In general, removal occurred faster in the SSFCWs and the final concentrations were lower. The removal of Ntot was only 36.6 ± 3.3% in the SFCWs due to nitrification-limiting conditions. The conditions in the SSFCWs, in contrast, seemed to promote Ntot removal (removal efficiency 96.7 ± 1.9%). The removal of P was hampered in both wetland types by reducing conditions. P that was initially removed was released again from the substrates later on. First-order removal rate constants were derived for the removal of both CODtot (SSFCWs: 1.1 ± 0.3 m d?1; SFCWs: 0.17 ± 0.06 m d?1) and Ntot (SSFCWs: 0.4 ± 0.1 m d?1; SFCWs: 1.7 ± 0.5 m d?1).  相似文献

A pilot-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor was operated during 307 days in order to treat swine slurry characterized by its high variable composition: organic and nitrogen applied loading rates and C/N ratio were 1.4–6.3 kg CODs/(m3 d), 0.5–2.5 kg N/(m3 d) and 1.9–9.4 g CODs/(g N), respectively. Aerobic granules successfully developed in the reactor and their physical properties remained rather stable despite the feeding composition variability. Organic and ammonia removal efficiency reached 61–73% and 56–77%, respectively, however ammonia was mainly oxidized to nitrite. The reactor had a good biomass retention capacity to select for granular biomass. However, its efficiency to retain the solids present in the feeding was low. Aerobic granulation in SBR systems appears as an interesting alternative to treat slurry in small livestock facilities where the implementation of anaerobic digestion systems is not a feasible option or the removal of nitrogenous compounds is required.  相似文献

In this study, a three-stage-integrated process using the hydrogenic process (BioH2), methanogenic process (BioCH4), and a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was operated using molasses wastewater. The contribution of individual processes to chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and energy production was evaluated. The three-stage integration system was operated at molasses of 20 g-COD L?1, and each process achieved hydrogen production rate of 1.1 ± 0.24 L-H2 L?1 day?1, methane production rate of 311 ± 18.94 mL-CH4 L?1 day?1, and production rate per electrode surface area of 10.8 ± 1.4 g m?2 day?1. The three-stage integration system generated energy production of 32.32 kJ g-COD?1 and achieved COD removal of 98 %. The contribution of BioH2, BioCH4, and the MFC reactor was 20.8, 72.2, and, 7.0 % of the total COD removal, and 18.7, 81.2, and 0.16 % of the total energy production, respectively. The continuous stirred-tank reactor BioH2 at HRT of 1 day, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket BioCH4 at HRT of 2 days, and MFC reactor at HRT of 3 days were decided in 1:2:3 ratios of working volume under hydraulic retention time consideration. This integration system can be applied to various configurations depending on target wastewater inputs, and it is expected to enhance energy recovery and reduce environmental impact of the final effluent.  相似文献

A static granular bed reactor (SGBR) was used to treat swine wastewater at 24 and 16 °C. At 24 °C, the organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.7-5.4 kg COD/m3 day and the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 88.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, at 16 °C, the OLR was 1.6-4.0 kg COD/m3 day and the average COD removal efficiency was 68.0%, respectively. The SGBR acted as a bioreactor as well as a biofilter. After backwashing, the recovery of COD removal was not a function of an OLR but recovery time, while that of TSS removal was not a function of either recovery time or the OLR. The maximum substrate utilization rate (kmax) ratio was 1.89 between 24 and 16 °C, and the half velocity constant (Ks) ratio was 1.22, and the maximum specific growth rate (μmax) ratio was 4.71. In addition, the temperature-activity coefficient in this study was determined to be 1.09.  相似文献

A field test was conducted on a hydrolysis acidification/bio-contact oxidation system (HA/BCO) to treat oilfield-produced water with high salinity. By operating the biodegradation system for three months with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 32 h and a volumetric load of 0.28 kg COD m3 d?1, the treatment process achieved mean removal efficiencies of 63.5% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 45% for NH3-N, 79.5% for total suspended solid (TSS), and 68.0% for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH). GC/MS was used to analyze relative changes of components of main organic waste in a process indicating that the influent wastewater contained organic compounds from C12H26 to C35H72, which could be degraded effectively with the coordinated action of hydrolysis acidification and aerobic treatment. The use of maize powder can enhance environmental adaptability of microorganisms and biodegradation ability and is recommended as a nutrient supplement to maintain good treatment performance.  相似文献

A spiral packed-bed bioreactor inoculated with microorganisms obtained from activated sludge was used to conduct a feasibility study for phenol removal. The reactor was operated continuously at various phenol loadings ranging from 53 to 201.4 g m−3 h−1, and at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range of 20–180 min to estimate the performance of the device. The results indicated that phenol removal efficiency ranging from 82.9 to 100% can be reached when the reactor is operated at an HRT of 1 h and a phenol loading of less than 111.9 g m−3 h−1. At an influent phenol concentration of 201.4 g m−3, the removal efficiency increased from 18.6 to 76.9% with an increase in the HRT (20–120 min). For treatment of phenol in the reactor, the maximum biodegradation rate (V m) was 1.82 mg l−1 min−1; the half-saturation constant (K s), 34.95 mg l−1.  相似文献
