The seasonal pattern of terpene content and emission by seven Mediterranean woody species was studied under field conditions. Emission rates were normalized at 30°C and 1000 μmol·m·s PFD (photosynthetic photon flux density). Bupleurum fruticosum, Pinus halepensis, and Cistus albidus stored large amounts of terpenes (0.01-1.77% [dry matter]) with maximum values in autumn and minimum values in spring. They emitted large amounts of terpenes (2-40 μg·g DM·h), but with no clear seasonal trend except for Cistus albidus, which had maximum values in spring and minimum values in autumn. The nonstoring species Arbutus unedo, Erica arborea, Quercus coccifera and Quercus ilex also emitted large amounts of terpenes (0-40 μg·g DM·h) and also tended to present maximum emission rates in spring, although this trend was significant only for A. unedo. At the seasonal scale, emission rates did not follow changes in photosynthetic rates; instead, they mostly followed changes in temperature. From autumn to spring, the least volatile monoterpenes such as limonene were emitted at highest rates, whereas the most volatile monoterpenes such as α-pinene and β-pinene were the most emitted in summer. The monoterpene emission rates represented a greater percentage of the photosynthetic carbon fixation in summer (from 0.51% in Arbutus unedo to 5.64% in Quercus coccifera) than in the rest of the seasons. All these seasonality trends must be considered when inventorying and modeling annual emission rates in Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

We studied the emission of [alpha]-pinene from Quercus ilex leaves. Only the abaxial side of the hypostomatous Q. ilex leaf emits [alpha]-pinene. Light induced photosynthesis and [alpha]-pinene emission. However, the response of photosynthesis to dark-to-light transitions was faster than that of [alpha]-pinene, suggesting that ATP controls the emission. The emission was higher at 30 than at 20[deg]C, whereas photosynthesis did not change. Therefore, the relationship between photosynthesis and [alpha]-pinene emission does not always hold. When CO2 was removed from the air, transpiration was stimulated but photosynthesis and [alpha]-pinene emission were inhibited. [alpha]-Pinene inhibition was more rapid under low O2. When CO2 in the air was increased, photosynthesis was stimulated and transpiration was reduced, but [alpha]-pinene emission was unaffected. Therefore, the emission depends on the availability of photosynthetic carbon, is not saturated at ambient CO2, and is not dependent on stomatal opening. The pattern of [alpha]-pinene emission from Q. ilex is different from that of plants having specialized structures for storage and emission of terpenes. We suggest that [alpha]-pinene emitted by Q. ilex leaves is synthesized in the chloroplasts and shares the same biochemical pathway with isoprene emitted by isoprene-emitting oak species.  相似文献

Leaves of the monoterpene emitter Quercus ilex were exposed to a temperature ramp with 5 °C steps from 30 to 55 °C while maintained under conditions in which endogenous emission of monoterpenes was allowed or suppressed, or under fumigation with selected exogenous monoterpenes. Fumigation with monoterpenes reduced the decline of photosynthesis, photorespiration and monoterpene emission found in non-fumigated leaves exposed to high temperatures. It also substantially increased respiration when photosynthesis and photorespiration were inhibited by low O2 and CO2-free air. These results indicate that, as previously reported for isoprene, monoterpenes may help plants cope with heat stress. Monoterpenes may enhance membrane stability, thus providing a rather non-specific protection of photosynthetic and respiratory processes. Monoterpene emission was maximal at a temperature of 35 °C and was inhibited at higher temperatures. This is likely to be the result of the temperature dependency of the enzymes involved in monoterpene synthesis. In contrast to other monoterpenes, cis- and trans- β -ocimene did not respond to exposure to high temperatures. Cis- β -ocimene also did not respond to low O2 or to fumigation. These results indicate that cis and trans- β -ocimene may have a different pathway of formation that probably does not involve enzymatic synthesis.  相似文献

This paper investigates the dependence of monoterpene emissions at the canopy scale on total leaf area and leaf distribution. Simulations were carried out for a range of hypothetical but realistic forest canopies of the evergreen Quercus ilex (holm oak). Two emission models were applied that either did (SIM-BIM2) or did not (G93) account for cumulative responses to temperature and light. Both were embedded into a canopy model that considered spatial and temporal variations of foliage properties. This canopy model was coupled to a canopy climate model (CANOAK) to determine the micrometeorological conditions at the leaf scale. Structural properties considerably impacted monoterpene emission. The sensitivities to changes in total leaf area and to leaf area distribution were found to be of similar magnitude. The two different models performed similarly on a whole-year basis but showed clear differences during certain episodes. The analysis showed that structural indices have to be carefully evaluated for proper scaling of emission from leaves to canopy. Further research is encouraged on seasonal dynamics of emission potentials.  相似文献

In a laboratory study, we investigated the monoterpene emissions from Quercus ilex, an evergreen sclerophyllous Mediterranean oak species whose emissions are light dependent. We examined the light and temperature responses of individual monoterpenes emitted from leaves under various conditions, the effect of heat stress on emissions, and the emission-onset during leaf development. Emission rate increased 10-fold during leaf growth, with slight changes in the composition. At 30 °C and saturating light, the monoterpene emission rate from mature leaves averaged 4·1 nmol m–2 s–1, of which α-pinene, sabinene and β-pinene accounted for 85%. The light dependence of emission was similar for all monoterpenes: it resembled the light saturation curve of CO2 assimilation, although monoterpene emission continued in the dark. Temperature dependence differed among emitted compounds: most of them exhibited an exponential increase up to 35 °C, a maximum at 42 °C, and a slight decline at higher temperatures. However, the two acyclic isomers cis-β-ocimene and trans-β-ocimene were hardly detected below 35 °C, but their emission rates increased above this temperature as the emission rates of other compounds fell, so that total emission of monoterpenes exponentially increased from 5 to 45 °C. The ratio between ocimene isomers and other compounds increased with both absolute temperature and time of heat exposure. The light dependence of emission was insensitive to the temperature at which it was measured, and vice versa the temperature dependence was insensitive to the light regime. The results demonstrated that none of the models currently applied to simulate isoprene or monoterpene emissions correctly predicts the short-term effects of light and temperature on Q. ilex emissions. The percentage of fixed carbon lost immediately as monoterpenes ranged between 0·1 and 6·0% depending on temperature, but rose up to 20% when leaves were continuously exposed to temperatures between 40 and 45 °C.  相似文献

The relationships of monoterpene emission with temperature, light, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance (gs) were studied in Quercus ilex L. trees throughout the four annual seasons under field conditions. The highest monoterpene emission was measured in spring and summer (midday average of 11 μg [g DW]?1 h?1), whereas the lowest rates were found in autumn and winter (midday averages of 0.51 and 0.23 μg [g DW]?1 h?1, respectively). In spring and summer, limonene was the monoterpene emitted at highest rate (midday averages of 5.27–6.69 μg [g DW]?1 h?1), whereas α-pinene was emitted the most in autumn and winter (midday averages of 0.31 μg [g DW]?1 h?1). The monoterpenes limonene, α-pinene and β-pinene represented about 75–95% of total detected monoterpenes. The total monoterpene emission rates represented about 0.04% of carbon fixed in autumn, 0.17% in winter, 0.84–2.51% in spring and 1.22–5.13% in summer. Significant correlations of total monoterpene emission with temperature were found when considering either summer emission or the emission over the entire year, whereas significant correlations with net photosynthetic rates were only found when considering summer season. Among individual terpenes, the most volatile, α-pinene and β-pinene, were more correlated with temperature than with net photosynthetic rates whereas the less volatile limonene was more correlated with net photosynthetic rate. Thus, under field conditions it seems that dependency of monoterpene emission on photosynthetic rate or temperature is partly related with volatility of the compounds. Influences of seasonality, temperature, photosynthetic rates and volatility should be considered in inventories and models of emission rates in Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

A variety of ecophysiological parameters were monitored in leaves of Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) during seasonal leaf senescence. Higher levels of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde, and lower content of total protein and efficiency of photochemistry of photosystem II (PSII) were observed in the senescent leaves (SL) compared to the mature leaves (ML). A significant decrease in the contents of chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoids (Car) in SL was also observed, but with increase in ratio of Car/Chl. Moreover, activities of superoxide dismutases, catalase, and glutathione reductase in SL were strongly suppressed. In contrast, the activities of guaiacol peroxidase (POD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and the contents of reduced ascorbate, total ascorbate, reduced glutathione and total glutathione were considerably increased in SL compared to ML. In addition, α-pinene, β-pinene, sabinene and total monoterpene pool in SL were drastically decreased. Taken together, these results indicate that the enhanced activities of POD and APX, and further activation of ascorbate-glutathione cycle conferred an important photoprotection against oxidative stress in senescent leaves of rubber trees. The increased Car/Chl could give the protection against photoxidation as well.  相似文献

1. Changes of δ13C and its relation to leaf development, biochemical content and water stress were monitored over a 2 year period in two co-occurring Mediterranean oak species: the deciduous Quercus pubescens and the evergreen Quercus ilex .
2. The time course of leaf δ13C showed different patterns in the two species. Young Q. pubescens leaves had a high δ13C and a marked decrease occurred during leaf growth. In contrast, leaves at budburst and maturity did not differ significantly in the case of Q. ilex . We suggest that the difference between δ13C of young leaves was linked to differential use of reserves of carbon compounds in the two species.
3. δ13C values of mature leaves were negatively correlated with minimum seasonal values of predawn water potential, suggesting that a functional adjustment to water resources occurred.
4. There was a significant correlation between individual δ13C values for two successive years. This interannual dependence showed that δ13C rankings between trees were constant through time.  相似文献

In addition to direct ecological functions in the interaction of plants with the environment, the emission of monoterpenes, especially from the foliage of evergreen trees, is of great importance for the production of ozone and photochemical oxidants in the troposphere. In the present work, we established a reproducible non-radioactive standard enzyme assay and characterized monoterpene synthase activities in needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and in leaves of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.). In Norway spruce, the dominant monoterpenes formed were alpha-pinene, camphene, and to a lesser extent beta-pinene and limonene. In holm oak, alpha-pinene, sabinene, and beta-pinene were the main products, while limonene was a minor component. Under optimum conditions, in both Norway spruce and holm oak, monoterpene formation remained constant up to 180 min and 90 min, respectively, and varied with the buffer and Mg2+ and Mn2+ concentrations used. Optimum temperature for monoterpene synthase activity was 40 degrees C in both species; optimal pH ranged between 6.5 and 7.5 in both species. Apparent Michaelis-constants for the substrate GDP were ca. 17.9 +/- 5.1 microM for Norway spruce and ca. 69.4 +/- 22.1 microM for holm oak. Molecular weight determination by FPLC indicated that the monoterpene synthases in Norway spruce and holm oak have native molecular weights of ca. 59 and 50 kDa, respectively.  相似文献

There is a growing awareness of vegetation's role as a source of potentially reactive hydrocarbons that may serve as photochemical oxidant precursors. This study assessed the influence of light and temperature, independently, on monoterpene emissions from slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.). Plants were preconditioned in a growth chamber, then transferred to an environmentally controlled gas exchange chamber. Samples of the chamber atmosphere were collected; the monoterpenes were concentrated cryogenically and measured by gas chromatography. Five monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene, limonene, and β-phellandrene) were present in the vapor phase surrounding the plants in sufficient quantity for reliable measurement. Light did not directly influence monoterpene emission rates since the emissions were similar in both the dark and at various light intensities. Monoterpene emission rates increased exponentially with temperature (i. e. emissions depend on temperature in a log-linear manner). The summed emissions of the five monoterpenes ranged from 3 to 21 micrograms C per gram dry weight per hour as temperature was increased from 20 to 46 C. Initially, emission rates from heat-stressed needles were similar to healthy needles, but rates decreased 11% per day. Daily carbon loss through monoterpene emissions accounted for approximately 0.4% of the carbon fixed during photosynthesis.  相似文献

The short-term relationships of monoterpene emission with temperature and relative humidity were studied in Pinus halepensis L. and Quercus ilex L. seedlings grown in air-conditioned chamber. In P. halepensis terpene emission rate increased with temperature (from 15 to 35 °C) and relative humidity (from 40 - 60 to 65 - 95 %). In Q. ilex, a terpene non-storing species, it increased with temperature only at high relative humidities but not at relative humidities lower than 60 %. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We studied the variations in different physiological parameters associated with UV-B radiation defense: UV-B radiation absorbance, UV-visible spectral reflectance, carotenoids concentration, leaf thickness, SLW (specific leaf weigth) and trichome density in Quercus ilex growing at 200 and 1200 m and Rhododendron ferrugineum growing at 2200 m. We examined the role of these parameters as protection mechanisms in an altitudinal gradient of increasing UV radiation in northern Catalonia and in sun and shade leaves. The concentration of UV-B radiation absorbing pigments was 15% higher in sun leaves of Q. ilex at 1200 m than in those from 200 m altitude. Sun leaves of R. ferrugineum presented concentrations three times higher than those of Q. ilex. Reflectance ranged between 5% (in the region 300–400 nm) and 12% (in the region 280–300 nm). The variation of reflectance with altitude followed an inverse trend respect to absorbance in the 280–300 nm region, with higher values the lower the altitude, but in the 300–400 nm region, reflectance of the lower site was the lowest. In both species and altitudes sun leaves presented higher concentrations of UV-B radiation absorbing pigments and UV reflectance than shade leaves. Quercus ilex trees of the higher location presented higher NDPI (Normalized Difference Pigment Reflectance Index) values, indicating higher carotenoids/chlorophyll a ratio. Actual measurements of carotenoid/chlorophyll a ratio confirmed this pattern. The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) presented higher values the higher the location indicating lower photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency. Specific leaf weight (SLW) and leaf thickness were larger in Q. ilex trees of higher location than in those of lower location. In both sites, sun leaves also presented larger SLW values than shade leaves. Adaxial leaf hair density in sun leaves was significantlly higher in the lower location. UV absorption and linked morphological traits (SLW, leaf thickness measured in Q. ilex) presented the larger differences among studied plants at different altitudes and seem to be the dominant UV protecting mechanisms.  相似文献

Monoterpene emissions, monoterpene synthase activities, photosynthesis, fluorescence yield in the dark and drought stress indicators (stomatal conductance and mid‐day water potential) were concurrently measured under similar temperature and illumination in current‐year leaves of Quercus ilex L. of plants grown in open‐top chambers at ambient (350 ppm) and elevated (700 ppm) CO2. The study was undertaken to understand the effect of CO2 on monoterpene biosynthesis, and to predict and parameterize the biogenic emissions at growing CO2 concentrations. The results of the 1998 and 1999 studies show that at elevated CO2, and in the absence of persistent environmental stresses, photosynthesis was stimulated with respect to ambient CO2, but that the emission of the three most abundantly emitted monoterpenes (α‐pinene, sabinene and β‐pinene) was inhibited by approximately 68%. The enzyme activities of the monoterpene synthases catalysing the formation of the three monoterpenes were also inhibited at elevated CO2 and an excellent relationship was found between monoterpene emission and activity of the corresponding enzyme both at ambient and elevated CO2. Interestingly, however, limonene emission was enhanced in conditions of elevated CO2 as it was also the corresponding synthase. The ratio between enzyme activity and emission of the three main monoterpenes was high (above 20) at ambient CO2 but it was below 10 at elevated CO2 and, for limonene, on both treatments. Our results indicate that the overall emission of monoterpenes at elevated CO2 will be inhibited because of a concurrent, strong down‐regulation of monoterpene synthase activities. When the enzyme activity does not change, as for limonene, the high photosynthetic carbon availability at elevated CO2 conditions may even stimulate emission. The results of the 1997 study show that severe and persistent drought, as commonly occurs in the Mediterranean, may inhibit both photosynthesis and monoterpene (α‐pinene) emission, particularly at ambient CO2. Thus, emission is probably limited by photosynthetic carbon availability; the effect of elevated CO2per se is not apparent if drought, and perhaps other environmental stresses, are also present.  相似文献

We studied the effects of water stress, fertilization and time course on foliar volatile terpene emission rates by Quercus ilex and Pinus halepensis in a garden experiment. The terpenes mostly emitted by both species were α -pinene, β -pinene, β -myrcene and Δ3-carene. P. halepensis emission rates (average 31.45 μg g−1 DM h−1) were similar to those of Q. ilex (average 31.71 μg g−1 DM h−1). The effects of drought (reduction to one-third of full watering) and fertilization (250 kg N ha−1, 250 kg P ha−1, or both) were different depending on the species: the drought treatment significantly increased the terpene emissions from Q. ilex by 33%, and the fertilization treatments reduced the terpene emissions from P. halepensis by 38%. Terpene emission rates increased with time course in parallel to raising summer temperatures in P. halepensis and Q. ilex , whose emission rates were temperature related (r = 0.42 and r = 0.68, respectively) and light related (r = 0.32 and r = 0.57, respectively). There was a positive relationship for P. halepensis , and a negative relationship for Q. ilex, between emission rates and relative water contents. No relationship was found between emission rates and N or P foliar concentrations. The results of this study show complex species-specific responses with stronger and faster short-term responses in terpene-non-storing than in storing species and indicate that terpene emissions may significantly change in the warmer, drier and more fertilized conditions predicted for the next decades in the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Regulation of monoterpene accumulation in leaves of peppermint   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18       下载免费PDF全文
Plants synthesize numerous classes of natural products that accumulate during development and are thought to function as constitutive defenses against herbivores and pathogens. However, little information is available about how the levels of such defenses are regulated. We measured the accumulation of monoterpenes, a model group of constitutive defenses, in peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) leaves and investigated several physiological processes that could regulate their accumulation: the rate of biosynthesis, the rate of metabolic loss, and the rate of volatilization. Monoterpene accumulation was found to be restricted to leaves of 12 to 20 d of age, the period of maximal leaf expansion. The rate of monoterpene biosynthesis determined by (14)CO(2) incorporation was closely correlated with monoterpene accumulation, as determined by gas chromatographic analysis, and appeared to be the principal factor controlling the monoterpene level of peppermint leaves. No significant catabolic losses of monoterpenes were detected throughout leaf development, and monoterpene volatilization was found to occur at a very low rate, which, on a monthly basis, represented less than 1% of the total pool of stored monoterpenes. The composition of volatilized monoterpenes differed significantly from that of the total plant monoterpene pool, suggesting that these volatilized products may arise from a separate secretory system. With the demonstration that the rate of biosynthesis is the chief process that determines monoterpene accumulation in peppermint, efforts to improve production in this species can now focus on the genes, enzymes, and cell differentiation processes that regulate monoterpene biosynthesis.  相似文献

Tropical forests absorb large amounts of atmospheric CO2 through photosynthesis but elevated temperatures suppress this absorption and promote monoterpene emissions. Using 13CO2 labeling, here we show that monoterpene emissions from tropical leaves derive from recent photosynthesis and demonstrate distinct temperature optima for five groups (Groups 1–5), potentially corresponding to different enzymatic temperature‐dependent reaction mechanisms within β‐ocimene synthases. As diurnal and seasonal leaf temperatures increased during the Amazonian 2015 El Niño event, leaf and landscape monoterpene emissions showed strong linear enrichments of β‐ocimenes (+4.4% °C?1) at the expense of other monoterpene isomers. The observed inverse temperature response of α‐pinene (?0.8% °C?1), typically assumed to be the dominant monoterpene with moderate reactivity, was not accurately simulated by current global emission models. Given that β‐ocimenes are highly reactive with respect to both atmospheric and biological oxidants, the results suggest that highly reactive β‐ocimenes may play important roles in the thermotolerance of photosynthesis by functioning as effective antioxidants within plants and as efficient atmospheric precursors of secondary organic aerosols. Thus, monoterpene composition may represent a new sensitive ‘thermometer’ of leaf oxidative stress and atmospheric reactivity, and therefore a new tool in future studies of warming impacts on tropical biosphere‐atmosphere carbon‐cycle feedbacks.  相似文献

An 859-bp cDNA segment of a terpene synthase gene was amplified by PCR from the evergreen sclerophyllous holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) using heterologous primers for conserved regions of terpene synthase genes (TPS) in dicotyledonous plants. Based on the sequence of this segment, homologous primers were designed for amplification by RACE-PCR of a cDNA segment carrying the monoterpene synthase gene myrS. The gene encodes a protein of 597 amino acids including an N-terminal putative plastid transit peptide. The gene without the segment encoding the transit peptide was cloned by PCR into a bacterial expression vector. Expression in Escherichia coli yielded an active monoterpene synthase, which converted geranyl diphosphate (GDP) predominantly into the acyclic monoterpene myrcene and to a very small extent into cyclic monoterpenes. Sequence comparison with previously cloned monoterpene synthases revealed that the myrcene synthase from Q. ilex belongs to the TPSb subfamily.  相似文献

Jasmonic acid (JA) is a signalling compound with a key role in both stress and development in plants, and is reported to elicit the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Here we studied the dynamics of such emissions and the linkage with photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance. We sprayed JA on leaves of the Mediterranean tree species Quercus ilex and measured the photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductances, and emissions and uptake of VOCs using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry and gas chromatography after a dark-light transition. Jasmonic acid treatment delayed the induction of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance by approx. 20 min, and decreased them 24 h after spraying. Indications were found of both stomatal and nonstomatal limitations of photosynthesis. Monoterpene emissions were enhanced (20-30%) after JA spraying. Jasmonic acid also increased methyl salicylate (MeSa) emissions (more than twofold) 1 h after treatment, although after 24 h this effect had disappeared. Formaldehyde foliar uptake decreased significantly 24 h after JA treatment. Both biotic and abiotic stresses can thus affect plant VOC emissions through their strong impact on JA levels. Jasmonic acid-mediated increases in monoterpene and MeSa emissions might have a protective role when confronting biotic and abiotic stresses.  相似文献
