Effects of salinity on the survival, growth, and development of stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), were investigated in the laboratory. Larvae failed to develop to pupation when reared in media containing a salinity of 40 parts per thousand (ppt) sodium chloride (NaCl). Maximum salinity supporting larval development equaled the salinity of seawater (34 ppt); the larval LC90 was 24.2 ppt. Deleterious effects of high salinity decreased as larvae matured. Six-day-old larvae reared at a salinity of 34 ppt weighed 79% less than controls, compared with a 36% difference in 9-d-old larvae; by pupation, the difference was only 24%. Salinity did not influence the duration of larval, pupal, or adult stages. Survival of pupae was unimpaired despite a slight increase in number of pupal deformities, and normal adults emerged. Eggs were highly tolerant to saline. They hatched at salinity concentrations lethal to larvae; greater than 50% hatch occurred even when eggs were maintained at 80 ppt NaCl. Sensitivity of larvae to salinities close to that of seawater might be important for control of stable flies inhabiting marine areas.  相似文献

1. Studies of dispersal of macroinvertebrates in streams and rivers tend to be focused on drift, whilst benthic movements are usually considered to be less important.
2. Field-enclosure experiments with the mayfly Baetis rhodani indicate that net dispersal in this species is simply a proportional loss of individuals from the benthos.
3. Neither net upstream or downstream movements exhibited evidence of density-dependence in the form of curvilinear relationships between initial and final densities.
4. The net number of animals moving upstream did not differ significantly from the net number moving downstream.
5. The probable mechanisms behind density-independent dispersal are discussed, as are the implications for our understanding of population dynamics in relation to invertebrate drift.  相似文献

The effect of incubation temperature and pH on the hatch rate of eggs of Necator americanus, and the desiccation tolerance of the resulting infective stage-3 larvae were investigated in the laboratory under controlled conditions. Hatching did not occur below 15 C and above 35 C. A 21% hatch rate was obtained at 15 C while a 10.6% hatch rate was obtained at 35 C. The highest hatch rate (93.7%) was obtained at 30 C. The optimum pH for hatching was 6.0, but the larvae did not reach the infective stage. Incubation temperature of the eggs affected the longevity and desiccation tolerance of resultant infective larvae. Larvae hatched at 30 C and maintained at 26 C under bright fluorescent light had a 50% survival time (S50) of 4 days. In the dark or shade, the S50 for larvae raised at 30 C was 5 weeks, while that of larvae hatched at 20 C was 7 weeks. Incubation temperature also affected the desiccation tolerance of larvae. Larvae developed at 20 C were more resistant to desiccation at various relative humidity values than larvae hatched at 30 C.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Based on in situ gutter trials we related the drift of caddis flies to their benthic densities and to various abiotic factors in streams in the Ivory Coast (West Africa). Members of the families Hydropsychidae, Philopotamidae. Hydroptilidae and Leptoceridae were considered in detail.
2. The drift of larvae peaked at night in both early and late larval instars.
3. Drift of a larval group (a certain instar, species or higher taxon) was more often related to the benthic density of other larval groups than to its own benthic density.
4. Self-regulation of an upper benthic density of a larval group by emigration through drift was not statistically evident.
5. There was no straightforward relationship between drift and abiotic factors.
6. Drift rates differed between taxa as well as between larval instars (size groups) within a taxon. Newly hatched larvae had very high drift rates, whereas the last larval instar usually had the lowest drift rate.
7. We related these results to the violently fluctuating discharge of the streams in the study area and the consequent variability of space for lotic insects.
8. Drift estimates, made at the same time as a monitoring programme on possible side-effects of insecticides (Onchocerciasis Control Programme), failed to reflect benthic densities except in the night drift of Hydropsychidae.  相似文献

Lethal and sublethal effects of particular starvation events were investigated in larvae of Carcinusmaenas L. Mean survival times of continuously starved zoeae-1 were approximately twice the normal stage duration (12, 18, 25°C), and both increased with falling temperatures. At 6°C zoea-1 was unable to develop to stage-2. No larva retained the ability for successful further development if starved for half the stage duration time and was then refed. The zoea-1 larvae had to feed for at least 20 % of the normal stage duration for some larvae to moult to zoea-2. Some initial feeding was necessary to start zoea-1 development. Beyond a certain point of energy and accumulation of reserves development of the larvae seems to continue regardless of feeding rates. The demands for larval feeding correspond very well with the larval moulting cycle. Larvae of C. maenas proved to be well adapted to natural shortage of food.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. As a spring-feeding moth committed to immature foliage, the autumnal moth Epirrita autumnata (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) must have egg hatch synchronised with the bud-burst of its host plants. Due to large individual variation in the length of the pupal period, however, E. autumnata populations exhibit a prolonged period of flight and oviposition. Because the timing of oviposition in autumn is associated with the timing of egg hatch in the following spring, the time window for egg hatch expands and more potential hosts may become attainable. This suggestion was evaluated under field conditions by rearing E. autumnata eggs and larvae on four different hosts.
2. The performance of E. autumnata was measured by using estimates for fecundity (pupal mass) as well as survivorship of eggs and larvae. Based on the availability of foliage and phenological synchrony between larval and leaf development, early-laid eggs and the larvae originating from them were predicted to perform better on the hosts that have early-flushing leaves. On the late-flushing hosts, the larvae that hatched later were predicted to perform better than the larvae that hatched earlier. Half of the trials were exposed to predators and parasitoids, while the rest were conducted inside mesh-bags preventing larval dispersal and mortality due to natural enemies.
3. The results of the experiment did not support the simple predictions. In particular, host-plant quality and natural enemies appeared to operate discordantly between early- and late-laid eggs. Larvae from the late-laid eggs had rapid development during the larval stages and pupated at the same time and with the same pupal mass as the larvae hatched from the early-laid eggs.
4. The results indicate an occurrence of several, unknown selective forces in E. autumnata populations maintaining variation in the length of the pupal period, timing of oviposition, and timing of egg hatch.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Larvae of Parachauliodes japonicus (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) were tracked in streams using miniature radio-transmitters.
2. Larvae usually stayed under stones in shallow water for several days, but occasionally moved about on the stream bed at night.
3. Larvae possess a pair of respiratory tubes on abdominal segment VIII, which can be used as a snorkel to obtain oxygen from the atmosphere. Because respiratory rates decreased as dissolved oxygen decreased, larvae turned to air-breathing under lowered oxygen conditions. When in shallow water, they can alter respiratory mode from aquatic respiration to air breathing instantly by raising their caudal respiratory tubes to the surface of the water.
4. Microhabitat selection and respiratory behaviour are compared with those obtained previously for Protohermes grandis larvae, which belong to the same family and often inhabit the same stream as P. japonicus , but which have gill tufts on abdominal segments I-VII instead of respiratory tubes. The respiratory constraint on microhabitat preference by aquatic insects is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In contrast to above-ground insects, comparatively little is known about the behaviour of subterranean insects, due largely to the difficulty of studying them in situ .
2. The movement of newly hatched (neonate) clover root weevil ( Sitona lepidus L. Coleoptera: Curculinidae) larvae was studied non-invasively using recently developed high resolution X-ray microtomography.
3. The movement and final position of S. lepidus larvae in the soil was reliably established using X-ray microtomography, when compared with larval positions that were determined by destructively sectioning the soil column.
4. Newly hatched S. lepidus larvae were seen to attack the root rhizobial nodules of their host plant, white clover ( Trifolium repens L.). Sitona lepidus larvae travelled between 9 and 27 mm in 9 h at a mean speed of 1.8 mm h−1.
5. Sitona lepidus larvae did not move through the soil in a linear manner, but changed trajectory in both the lateral and vertical planes.  相似文献

A model for accurate drift estimation in streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. This paper explores the experimental difficulties involved with the use of drift nets in small streams, and outlines a method whereby the estimation of drift density (number of specimens m−3 of water) can be improved.
2. Changes in the filtering efficiency of the net caused by trapping of organic debris ('clogging') has the effect of reducing net entrance velocities, causing errors in the calculation of sampled water volume, and thus drift density. A model of the reductions in net entrance velocity based on empirical measurements of trapped debris is developed.
3. Cross-sectional velocity calculations suggest that errors can also be introduced into drift density calculations by positioning sampling nets only on the bed. A method to allow this effect is demonstrated.
4. As adjustments to the calculation of sampled volume are required when sampling in rivers that undergo marked changes in discharge during the sampling period, a method whereby these effects can be accommodated to improve drift density estimations is also outlined.
5. The results of this study imply that theoretical links between flow hydraulics and short-term drift behaviour are poorly understood.  相似文献

1. Adult tiger beetles of the genus Cicindela often co‐occur within a habitat but larvae do not. Larvae are sedentary and form usually permanent burrows at the site of oviposition where they require 1–3 years for development. 2. To test niche partitioning based on ovipositional preference, the behaviour of two sympatric salt marsh tiger beetles, Cicindela circumpicta and C. togata (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), were examined. 3. In laboratory studies, female C. circumpicta and C. togata distinguished between experimental salinities, with the former preferring 4 parts per thousand (ppt) and the latter preferring 12 ppt. In the field, C. circumpicta larvae were associated with lower salinities (1–3 ppt) and vegetation along the edges of salt flats while C. togata larvae were found on open salt flats often near halophytes (average salinity = 7.8 ppt). 4. In the field, females chose sites for oviposition in response to shade but not vertical landmarks. In a direct test, 53 of 56 new larval burrows occurred in shaded treatments, three in nonshaded controls. 5. Compared with nonshaded controls, shade increased survival of eggs that were collected in the laboratory and placed in the field. For C. circumpicta eggs, 78% placed in shaded treatments hatched, while significantly fewer (22%) hatched in exposed treatments. For C. togata, 43% of eggs placed in the shade hatched, while no eggs placed in exposed treatments hatched. 6. These results support the hypothesis of niche partitioning between C. circumpicta and C. togata based on ovipositional choice and resulting larval habitat.  相似文献

1.  In a 1-month outdoor stream channel experiment, we investigated the relative importance of habitat complexity (i.e. cobbled area) and the presence of adult signal crayfish ( Pacifastacus leniusculus ) males on the survival and growth of juveniles.
2.  In treatments with high habitat complexity, more juveniles survived, more were newly moulted and they had a higher specific growth rate (SGR) at the end of the experiment than juveniles in treatments with low habitat complexity. The presence of adult males did not affect survival, moulting stage or growth of the juveniles.
3.  The presence of adult males decreased juvenile activity during night. Juveniles in treatments with low habitat complexity were more active than juveniles in high habitat complexity during both day and night.
4.  There was no difference in total invertebrate biomass between treatments. However, some invertebrate taxa, such as Chironomidae larvae, were affected by habitat complexity or the presence of adult crayfish. Juvenile crayfish in all channels had consumed detritus, algae and Chironomidae larvae and there were no differences in gut contents or stable isotope signals (carbon and nitrogen) between treatments, indicating a similar diet among the juveniles across treatments. However, the biomass of chironomids was significantly higher in channels with adult crayfish present, indicating a decreased consumption of chironomids by juveniles in the presence of adults.
5.  Our results suggest that the recruitment of juvenile crayfish is mostly affected by habitat complexity. The competition for food and shelter and aggressive interactions between the juveniles were most pronounced in low habitat complexity, indicating that habitats with a good access to shelter will enhance recruitment of juvenile crayfish in streams.  相似文献

The distribution of smooth newts, Triturus vulgaris , and palmate newts, Triturus helveticus , in north-west Europe is related to geology and water quality. This study compared the development of the eggs and larvae of the two species under sublethal acidic and neutral conditions. Newt embryos raised under low pH hatched at an earlier stage of development, at a smaller size, and before those raised under neutral conditions. T. vulgaris hatched at a smaller size than T. helveticus , but pH did not affect the species differentially. Larvae of both species grew to a larger size under neutral than under acid conditions. Larvae raised in heterospecific pairs grew at least as well as those raised in conspecific pairs. Feeding was depressed under acid conditions, and reduced growth may therefore be associated with changes in the behaviour of newt larvae and their prey.  相似文献

The aquatic stages of the cattle biting pest, Simulium chutteri Lewis utilize river flow in their dispersal and colonization behaviour. Peaks of drifting activity in S. chutteri larvae occurred in the early morning and late afternoon. It is deduced that female flies scatter eggs onto slow flowing waters upstream of rapids. Larvae hatch from drifting eggs and colonize substrates in slower flowing regions upstream of rapids, while later stage instars move into faster flowing regions within rapids where they complete their development. This microhabitat selection by S. chutteri leads to rapid attainment of large population sizes in suitable sections of river and reduces competition between different stage larvae. In their utilization of a variety of microhabitats the larvae of this species differ from co-existing simuliid species which restrict developmental stages to single habitats.Catastrophic drift was recorded for S. chutteri larvae and could be a mechanism to regulate population size.Drift of simuliid larvae off rapids was not related to benthic population densities in the rapids and was therefore not due to excessive production. It is concluded that larval drift off rapids is related to habitat disturbances associated with water flow fluctuations and the activity of aquatic predators and other animals. The distribution of S. chutteri in the Vaal River is restricted by oviposition requirements of the adult female. Knowledge of drift behaviour and water flow requirements of Simuliidae have been applied to manage the population size of S. chutteri in the Vaal River.  相似文献

A comparative study of larval cannibalism in three species of ladybird   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Abstract. 1. Cannibalism was studied under laboratory conditions in three species of Coccinellidae (Coleoptera): Cycloneda sanguinea , Olla v-nigrum , and Harmonia axyridis . Larval cannibalism varied among species, C. sanguinea  > H. axyridis  ≥  O. v-nigrum .
2. Larvae of all species cannibalised more in response to reduced food availability (14 h starvation daily) than in response to reduced food quality (dry Ephestia eggs).
3. Larvae of H. axyridis cannibalised siblings at lower rates than non-siblings, but larvae of C. sanguinea and O. v-nigrum did not. Rates of cannibalism increased significantly with increasing size disparity among larvae of all three species.
4. Cannibalism in C. sanguinea and H. axyridis , but not in O. v-nigrum , increased with larval density, suggesting that not all attacks on conspecifics are driven by hunger.
5. Costs, not benefits, were the predominant effects of exclusively and partially cannibalistic diets. A diet of conspecific eggs yielded survival equivalent to the Ephestia egg diet for H. axyridis and O. v-nigrum , but developmental time was extended and adults were smaller. Larvae of C. sanguinea had superior survival and faster development on conspecific eggs than on the Ephestia egg diet. Only H. axyridis larvae survived as well on diets comprised exclusively or partially of conspecific larvae as on Ephestia eggs, although they developed more slowly.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Knowledge of the ecology of carabid species is largely restricted to adults, although larval mortality is assumed to be the key factor in overall mortality. As low-mobility larvae are unable to avoid unfavourable conditions, habitat selection of reproducing adults should be clearly affected by the habitat factors which determine offspring performance.
2. The present study examines the key habitat factors governing the distribution patterns of Bembidion velox larvae and adults on the river banks of the River Elbe by means of habitat suitability models. The validity of the determined habitat factors for offspring performance and survival was tested in laboratory experiments.
3. In the field, B. velox adults as well as larvae show a strong association with semi-terrestrial, sandy, open soil habitats.
4. In the laboratory, overall mortality of larvae reared in different substrates was lowest in sand of medium grain size mixed with fine and coarse sand. The first larval instars in particular reacted sensitively to variations in grain size. Furthermore, flood resistance of eggs was demonstrated, as 90% of larvae hatched under permanently flooded conditions.
5. Short development times were recorded, with 4–7 days for hatching of young larvae from eggs after oviposition and approximately 28 days for the development of adults from newly hatched larvae. This probably increases the survival probability for the pre-imaginal stages in dynamic habitats.
6. In conclusion, it can be said that reproductive success is strongly dependent on oviposition site selection by adults as this reflects the ecological demands of the immature stages.  相似文献

1. We investigated the growth of the detritivore-shredder Sericostoma personatum by feeding groups of larvae on a fresh macrophyte, Potamogeton perfoliatus , conditioned sitka spruce needles, Picea sitchensis , conditioned alder leaves, Alnus glutinosa , conditioned ash leaves, Fraxinus excelsior , and a fresh filamentous green alga, Microspora sp. A sixth treatment group of larvae was fasted.
2. The nitrogen content of the food items ranged from 1.4% dry weight (DW) for Picea needles to 4.4% DW for Microspora filaments. Consumption of the various food items by Sericostoma differed significantly, being highest for Picea , and lowest for Potamogeton and Microspora .
3. The instantaneous growth rate ranged from −1.3% DW day−1 in the fasting group to 0.75% DW day−1 in the Alnus group. The growth rate of larvae fed on Alnus , Fraxinus and Microspora was similar, and significantly higher than that of the other three groups. An increase in the size of larval cases followed the same pattern as larval growth, although with less variation between food items.
4. Larvae fed on Microspora exhibited the greatest increase in fat content, while that of the larvae fed on Picea and those in the fasting group decreased. The gross growth efficiency (G/I%) of Sericostoma (larva + case) ranged from 2% when fed on Picea to 34% when fed on Microspora . Consumption was significantly correlated with the nutrient content of food items, whereas G/I% and growth rate were only weakly related to food quality.
5. The growth of Sericostoma varies with diet and the food items sustaining highest growth rate are not necessarily the 'typical' shredder food resources.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Field experiments in a lake outlet stream were carried out on filter-feeding larvae of the caddisfly Hydropsyche siltalai Döhler, to assess whether microhabitat quality, establishment and growth rate is affected by position (upstream—downstream) within a dense aggregation of larvae.
2. Artificial substrates holding high-density aggregations of hydropsychid larvae were used. Marked III-instar H. siltalai larvae were implanted either in the upstream end or in the downstream end of an aggregation and recovered after 17 days.
3. Larvae recovered from the downstream end of an aggregation were smaller than those that had been implanted in the upstream end.
4. Fewer larvae had settled in the downstream end of aggregations compared to the exposed upstream part.
5. Naturally colonizing H. sitalai larvae were, in contrast to implanted larvae, more numerous behind aggregations. Small (first and second instar) Hydropsyche angustipennis (Curtis) and/or H. pellucidula (Curtis) larvae were more numerous in front of aggregations.
6. Current velocities, measured with a microcurrent velocity meter, and density of drifting prey, were significantly lower behind aggregations of hydropsychid larvae. Food availability decreased by about 50% behind aggregations.  相似文献

Nocturnal drift of mayfly nymphs as a post-contact antipredator mechanism   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. The predominantly nocturnal constrained drift of stream invertebrates is commonly regarded as a behaviour that avoids encounters with visually foraging fish in the water column. The alternative explanation, that drift peaks are caused by bottom-feeding, nocturnal predators, has rarely been tested.
2. We examined these hypotheses by collecting invertebrate drift in five streams in northern Finland: one with brown trout ( Salmo trutta , a drift-feeding fish), one with alpine bullhead ( Cottus poecilopus , a benthic fish), one with both species, and two fishless streams.
3. Drift by Baetis mayflies was aperiodic or slightly diurnal in both fishless streams on all sampling occasions. In contrast, drift was nocturnal in streams with trout and, to a lesser extent, in the stream with bullhead. Non-dipteran prey drifted mainly nocturnally in all streams with fish, whereas Diptera larvae were less responsive to the presence of fish.
4. In laboratory experiments, bullheads were night-active, causing a much higher frequency of drift by touching Baetis at night than during the day. Thus, increased nocturnal drift may serve to avoid both visual predators (a pre-contact response) and benthic fish (a post-contact response). In streams with bottom-feeding fish, nocturnal drift should be caused by increased drift by night rather than by reduced drift by day.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Ladybird eggs are defended chemically against intra-guild predation, and are unsuitable to varying degrees as food for other ladybirds.
2. Ladybird eggs [ Coccinella septempunctata (Cs) and Harmonia axyridis (Ha); Coleoptera: Coccinellidae] from local Japanese versus North American populations were compared as food for two ladybirds (Cs and Ha) co-occurring in Japan.
3. Larvae of Cs exhibited high mortality, slow development, and reduced egg consumption and weight gain when they fed on Ha versus conspecific eggs, especially when Ha eggs were from the local (Japanese) population versus a distant (North American) population of Ha.
4. Larvae of Ha survived equally well on a diet of Cs or conspecific eggs, but developed more slowly and gained less weight on Cs eggs. Ha larvae were more reluctant to eat eggs from the local (Japanese) population of Cs than eggs from the distant (North American) population of Cs; however, other measures of performance did not differ significantly.
5. These results indicate greater egg chemical defence of Ha eggs against Cs larvae than vice versa, as expected from field observations of greater temporal overlap between Cs larvae and Ha eggs than between Ha larvae and Cs eggs. Furthermore, results also indicate that local populations of eggs are better defended than eggs from elsewhere against locally occurring intra-guild predators. Thus, it appears that the effectiveness of chemical defence of ladybird eggs reflects the degree to which specific pairings of ladybirds have the potential to interact in nature through egg predation.  相似文献

1. Aquatic hyphomycetes are an important component of detritus processing in streams. Their response to enhanced stream retentiveness was tested by manipulating three streams located in Kielder Forest (northern England), a large plantation of exotic conifers, and two streams in Montagne Noire (south-west France) dominated by native broadleaf woodland. Treatment was by placement of logs or plastic litter traps into a 10–20 m stream section. Fungal spores were collected from stream water upstream and downstream of the treated sections over 1–2 years.
2. The average concentration of fungal spores in reference sections was nearly 10× greater in the French streams than in the English streams. The number of hyphomycete species was also higher in the French streams. These differences between regions were probably a consequence of the much lower standing stock and diversity of leaf litter in the English streams.
3. Despite these large regional differences, the treatment had a clear effect in all streams. Detrital standing stocks were enhanced in treated sections by up to 90% in French streams and 70% in English streams.
4. Mean spore density below treated sections increased by 1.8–14.8% in French streams and 10.2–28.9% in the naturally less retentive English streams. The number of fungal species increased significantly below the treated sections of the English streams, although not the French ones.
5. In biologically impoverished plantation streams, input of woody debris can increase detritus retention and enhance hyphomycete diversity and productivity. This may have consequent benefits for detritus processing and macroinvertebrate production.  相似文献
