An analysis was performed of the climatic responses of the radial growth of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. at two sites—both of which included contrasting north- and south-facing slopes—in Tura, central Siberia, with the development of ring width and maximum-density chronologies for each slope. Both residual and standard chronologies of ring widths were positively correlated with temperature from late May until mid June on all four slopes. By contrast, standard chronologies of ring widths were negatively correlated with precipitation during the winter (from October to April) and in May on the north-facing slope at site 1 and on the south-facing slope at site 2 respectively. The negative correlations with precipitation during the winter and in May on some of the slopes suggested that delayed snowmelt in early spring might inhibit the radial growth of L. gmelinii, and the effects of snow are likely to vary with topography. Both residual and standard chronologies of maximum densities were positively correlated with temperature in early July on all four slopes. Maximum densities were also positively correlated with precipitation during summer of the previous year on all the slopes. These suggest that no major differences exist in terms of responses of maximum density to climatic factors between the north- and south-facing slopes.  相似文献

We examined the effects of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on plant-insect interactions in Tierra del Fuego (55°S), Argentina, an area strongly affected by ozone depletion because of its proximity to Antarctica. Solar UV-B under Nothofagus antarctica branches was manipulated using a polyester plastic film to attenuate UV-B (uvb–) and an Aclar film to provide near-ambient UV-B (uvb+). The plastic films were placed on both north-facing (i.e., high solar radiation in the Southern Hemisphere) and south-facing branches. Insects consumed 40% less leaf area from north- than from south-facing branches, and at least 30% less area from uvb+ branches than from uvb– branches. The reduced herbivory on leaves from uvb+ branches occurred for both branch orientations. Leaf mass per area increased and relative water content decreased on north- versus south-facing branches, while no differences were apparent between the UV-B treatments. Solar UV-B did lead to lower gallic acid concentration and higher flavonoid aglycone concentration in uvb+ leaves relative to uvb– leaves. Both the flavonoid aglycone and quercetin-3-arabinopyranoside were higher on north-facing branches. In laboratory preference experiments, larvae of the dominant insect in the natural community, Geometridae Brown (Lepidoptera), consumed less area from field-grown uvb+ leaves than from uvb– leaves in 1996–97, but not in 1997–98. Correlation analyses suggested that the reduction in insect herbivory in the field under solar UV-B may be mediated in part by the UV-B effects on gallic acid and flavonoid aglycone.  相似文献

Only scarce information is available on how organic C is incorporated into the soil during the decay and how (micro) climate influences this process. Therefore, we investigated the effect of exposure and elevation on the organic litter decomposition and C-stabilisation in acidic soils of an Alpine environment. An experiment with artificially 13C labelled Norway spruce needles was carried out at north- and south-exposed sites between 1200 and 2400 m a.s.l. in the Italian Alps using mesocosms. After 1 year, the 13C recoveries of the bulk soil were 18.6% at the north-facing slopes and 31.5% at the south-facing slopes. A density fractionation into a light (LF; ≤1.6 g cm?3) and a heavy fraction (HF; >1.6 g cm?3) of the soil helped to identify how the applied substrate was stabilised. At the northern slope, 10.5% of the substrate was recovered in the LF and 8.1% in the HF and at the south-facing slope 22.8% in the LF and 8.1% in the HF. The overall 13C recovery was higher at the south-facing sites due to restricted water availability. Although the climate is humid in the whole area, soil moisture availability becomes more important at south-facing sites due to higher evapotranspiration. However, at sites >1700 m a.s.l, the situation changed, as the northern slope had higher recovery rates. At such altitudes, temperature effects are more dominant. This highlights the importance of locally strongly varying edaphic factors when investigating the carbon cycle.  相似文献

Most species distribution models assume a close link between climatic conditions and species distributions. Yet, we know little about the link between species'' geographical distributions and the sensitivity of performance to local environmental factors. We studied the performance of three bryophyte species transplanted at south- and north-facing slopes in a boreal forest landscape in Sweden. At the same sites, we measured both air and ground temperature. We hypothesized that the two southerly distributed species Eurhynchium angustirete and Herzogiella seligeri perform better on south-facing slopes and in warm conditions, and that the northerly distributed species Barbilophozia lycopodioides perform better on north-facing slopes and in relatively cool conditions. The northern, but not the two southern species, showed the predicted relationship with slope aspect. However, the performance of one of the two southern species was still enhanced by warm temperatures. An important reason for the inconsistent results can be that microclimatic gradients across landscapes are complex and influenced by many climate-forcing factors. Therefore, comparing only north- and south-facing slopes might not capture the complexity of microclimatic gradients. Population growth rates and potential distributions are the integrated results of all vital rates. Still, the study of selected vital rates constitutes an important first step to understand the relationship between population growth rates and geographical distributions and is essential to better predict how climate change influences species distributions.  相似文献

通过样地调查,对黄土高原丘陵沟壑区处于阴坡、半阴坡、半阳坡、阳坡4种生境条件下,经过30年发育的小叶杨人工林物种多样性,群落结构动态和土壤水分养分效应进行了系统研究,结果表明:(1)不同生境小叶杨人工林总体上物种丰富度、多样性指数和均匀度指数均呈现出阴坡>半阴坡>半阳坡>阳坡的趋势,且林内物种多样性指数表现为:草本层>灌木层;(2)不同生境条件下的小叶杨人工林年龄结构分析表明,尽管阴坡小叶杨长势相对较好,但更新幼苗数量相当有限,很难实现种群的自我更新,不适合作为人工林培育;(3)土壤含水量和养分因坡向不同而呈现出明显的差异,尽管阴坡和半阴坡的水分、养分条件相对较好,但也出现了枯梢、病虫害等衰老特征,因此阴坡、半阴坡的生境对小叶杨来说也不合适.未来应该对现有林地在保护的前提下,间伐衰老个体,补植和引入乡土物种,进行天然化培育.  相似文献

Blue oak (Quercus douglasii) is a deciduous tree species endemic to California that currently exhibits poor seedling survival to sapling age classes. We used common garden techniques to examine how genetic variation at regional and local scales affected phenotypic expression in traits affecting oak seedling growth and survival. Between-population variation was examined for seedlings grown from acorns collected from a northern, mesic population and a southern, xeric population. Within-population variation was examined by comparing seedlings from different maternal families within the mesic population. Acorns were planted into neighborhoods of an annual dicot (Erodium botrys), an annual grass (Bromus diandrus), and a perennial bunchgrass (Nassella pulchra). By varying the species composition of herbaceous neighborhoods into which acorns were planted, the interactive effects of competition and acorn germplasm source on phenotypic expression could also be examined. Potential maternal effects, expressed as variation in acorn size, were assessed by weighing each acorn before planting. Probability of seedling emergence increased significantly with acorn size in the xeric population but not in the mesic population. Similarly, the effect of acorn size on seedling leaf area, stem weight, and root weight was also population-dependent. At a within-population level, acorn size effects on seedling traits varied significantly among maternal families. In addition to acorn size effects, rates of oak seedling emergence were also dependent on an interaction of population source and competitive environment. Interactions between maternal family and competitive environment in the expression of seedling leaf characters suggest the possibility of genetic variation for plasticity in traits such as specific leaf area. Using carbon isotope discrimination () as an index of relative water-use efficiency (WUE), higher water use efficiency was indicated for oak seedlings grown in the annual plant neighborhoods compared to seedlings grown in the bunchgrass neighborhood. This trend may represent an adaptive plastic response because, compared to the bunchgrass neighborhood, soil water depletion was more rapid within annual plant neighborhoods.  相似文献

对商南县2年生杉木苗木进行乳牛肝菌(Suillus bovines)、褐环乳牛肝菌(Suillus luteus)和褐黄牛肝菌(Boletus luridus)3种外生菌根真菌的接种试验.结果显示,外生菌根真菌对杉木苗木成活率、苗高和地径生长均有明显的促进作用,能明显提高苗木的菌根化水平,增加苗木体内叶绿素含量,促进其游离脯氨酸含量的累积,降低丙二醛含量.对不同坡向杉木苗木各项生长指标的分析显示,在杉木人工造林中,阳坡的综合效应明显优于阴坡.乳牛肝菌和褐黄牛肝菌可作为一种生物肥料,在杉木人工造林中应用.  相似文献

Daily sap flow rate was determined in five Mediterranean species (Pinus halepensis, Quercus coccifera, Pistacia lentiscus, Erica multiflora, and Stipa tenacissima) under two slope aspects (north- and south-facing) in a semi-arid area (Alicante, SE Spain). Sap flow velocity was measured in January, May, August and October of two consecutive years (1998 and 1999) using the stem heat balance (SHB) method. Our results have demonstrated the effects of global radiation (R g), vapour pressure deficit (VPD) on the sap flow velocity per unit of leaf area. Mean daily sap flow rates (Q md) showed values between 0.001 and 0.202 g H2O cm−2 leaf area day−1. Q md values were higher on the south-facing slope than on the north-facing slope. In most species, the Q md was higher in 1998 than in 1999 due to the higher soil water content, temperature and VPD in 1998. In all five species, a decrease in predawn leaf water potential was accompanied by a decrease in mean daily sap flow rates; nevertheless, the responses of the five species to water deficit conditions were different. In this context, we have linked the drought avoidance mechanisms of the different species through the combined use of daily sap flow rate and predawn leaf water potential under different water deficit conditions. We conclude that Pinus halepensis, Pistacia lentiscus and Erica multiflora show water-savers mechanisms to cope with drought, while Quercus coccifera and Stipa tenacissima show water-spenders mechanisms.  相似文献

The interrelation of Alpine topography with the micro − and mesobiota is still poorly understood. We investigated the effects of ground cover type and slope exposure on the soil microbial biomass (double-stranded DNA, dsDNA) and abundances (real time PCR, qPCR); hydrolytic enzyme activities; and enchytraeid community structure in top soils (2.5-cm increments depth) in subalpine forests in the Italian Alps. Dominant ground covers were grass, moss, litter and woody debris at the north- and the south-facing slopes. The autochthonous soil microbiota (bacteria, fungi and archaea) was quantified by qPCR in the extracellular (eDNA) and intracellular fraction (iDNA) of the total soil DNA pool. A higher eDNA/iDNA ratio indicative of lower microbial activity was recorded in the deepest layer of the grass plots at the north-facing slope. This can be related to a lower degradation of eDNA and/or to an accumulation of eDNA with increasing depth as a result of leaching. The exposure effect was enzyme-specific and higher activities occurred under woody debris primarily at the south-facing slope. These plots also showed a higher nutrient content and a greater microbial biomass assessed as dsDNA yields. Total microannelid abundance was elevated on north-facing slopes on account of strong acidity indicator species. This was related to soil pH being one unit lower compared to the south-facing slope. The thickness of the organic layer (OL + OF + OH) was elevated at the north-facing slope due to a considerably thicker OH-horizon. The vast majority of microannelids at this slope occurred in the organic layer, while at south exposure they were almost evenly distributed between the organic layer and the mineral soil (A-horizon). Exposure was found to be more determinative for the composition of microannelid assemblages than the ground cover type.  相似文献

The diversity of surrounding vegetation is thought to modify the interactions between a focal plant and its herbivores, disrupting (associational resistance) or enhancing (associational susceptibility) host plant location and colonisation. We compared the effects of host plant concentration on herbivory by generalist and specialist insects feeding on oak seedlings by increasing local concentration of seedlings. We also assessed the effects of the composition and structure of surrounding vegetation, both at stand and local levels. The damage caused by generalist leaf-feeding insects depended on the structure of plant communities at stand level, and increased with tree cover. By contrast, infestation by specialist leaf miners was affected by local understorey vegetation surrounding oak seedlings, and decreased with increasing shrub cover and stratification diversity. Leaf mine abundance was higher at higher oak seedling density, giving support to the host concentration hypothesis. However, the abundance of these specialist herbivores was also negatively correlated with damage caused by the generalist external leaf-feeders, suggesting competitive interactions.  相似文献

We have studied whether there is natural genetic variation for mutation frequencies, and whether any such variation is environment-related. Mutation frequencies differed significantly between wild strains of the fungus Sordaria fimicola isolated from a harsher or a milder microscale environment in "Evolution Canyon," Israel. Strains from the harsher, drier, south-facing slope had higher frequencies of new spontaneous mutations and of accumulated mutations than strains from the milder, lusher, north-facing slope. Collective total mutation frequencies over many loci for ascospore pigmentation were 2.3, 3.5 and 4.4% for three strains from the south-facing slope, and 0.9, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.3% for five strains from the north-facing slope. Some of this between-slope difference was inherited through two generations of selfing, with average spontaneous mutation frequencies of 1.9% for south-facing slope strains and 0.8% for north-facing slope strains. The remainder was caused by different frequencies of mutations arising in the original environments. There was also significant heritable genetic variation in mutation frequencies within slopes. Similar between-slope differences were found for ascospore germination-resistance to acriflavine, with much higher frequencies in strains from the south-facing slope. Such inherited variation provides a basis for natural selection for optimum mutation rates in each environment.  相似文献

To elucidate the forees maintaining protein polymorphisms, microgeographic differentiation in proteins, encoded by 30 loci, was tested in 285 individuals comprising 3 species of landsnails in Israel. Each test consisted of 2 close subpopulations: one from the drier and warmer south-facing slope and the other from the opposite wetter and cooler north-facing slope. The 5 tests involved 2 of Buliminus labrosus in Mediterranean Count Carmel; 1 of Sphincterochila zonata in the northern, and 2 of S. prophetarum in the central Negev desert. The results indicate significant allele differences between the two slopes in several loci in each of the 5 local tests, involving primarily esterases (Est), aspartate aminotransferase (Aat) and leucine amino peptidases (Lap). The differential slope patterns appear to be adaptive, and are presumably maintained by microclimatic diversifying selection.  相似文献

We examined variation in leaf size and specific leaf area (SLA) in relation to the distribution of 22 chaparral shrub species on small-scale gradients of aspect and elevation. Potential incident solar radiation (insolation) was estimated from a geographic information system to quantify microclimate affinities of these species across north- and south-facing slopes. At the community level, leaf size and SLA both declined with increasing insolation, based on average trait values for the species found in plots along the gradient. However, leaf size and SLA were not significantly correlated across species, suggesting that these two traits are decoupled and associated with different aspects of performance along this environmental gradient. For individual species, SLA was negatively correlated with species distributions along the insolation gradient, and was significantly lower in evergreen versus deciduous species. Leaf size exhibited a negative but non-significant trend in relation to insolation distribution of individual species. At the community level, variance in leaf size increased with increasing insolation. For individual species, there was a greater range of leaf size on south-facing slopes, while there was an absence of small-leaved species on north-facing slopes. These results demonstrate that analyses of plant functional traits along environmental gradients based on community level averages may obscure important aspects of trait variation and distribution among the constituent species.  相似文献

森林鼠类的种子贮藏行为对植物的扩散及更新会产生积极的影响。2012和2013年秋季,分别在秦岭北坡的周至国家级自然保护区和南坡的佛坪国家级自然保护区内,调查了森林鼠类对板栗(Castanea mollissima)和锐齿栎(Quercus aliena)种子的取食和扩散差异。结果显示:1)秦岭南北坡的环境因素,特别是植被因素,对鼠类扩散板栗和锐齿栎种子具有重要的影响。南坡较为丰富的壳斗科植被种类,导致2种种子在南坡存留时间均长于北坡,而北坡的扩散取食和丢失率均高于南坡。2)种子特征影响鼠类的取食或贮藏偏好。由于较高的蛋白、脂肪等营养含量,鼠类更喜好取食或搬运贮藏板栗种子。然而,低营养但高丹宁含量的锐齿栎种子仍然被鼠类大量贮藏。3)2种种子在南北坡的扩散历程在两个年份间有很大差异,在食物相对匮乏的年份(2012年),种子被扩散的速度更快且丢失的比率更高。这种差异反映了种子大小年现象对森林鼠类取食和贮藏策略的影响。4)无论在秦岭南坡还是北坡,营养价值含量(如蛋白和脂肪)较高的板栗种子的取食和贮藏距离都明显大于营养价值含量较低的锐齿栎种子,这与最优贮藏空间分布模型的预测一致。  相似文献

Summary The partitioning of solar and net total irradiances between the canopy and soil was measured in mixed and chamise chaparral in southern California. The solar and net total irradiance absorbed within the canopy was a relatively constant fraction throughout the year. Variations can be explained by the changing path length of the solar beam as the solar altitude varies. The increased fraction of solar irradiance in winter, combined with the lower incident solar irradiance, produced a wide fluctuation of solar irradiance at the soil surface through the year. Although incoming solar irradiance on the bare soil surface is less on the north-facing slope than on the south-facing slope, the absorption of solar irradiance is greater in the canopy of the mixed chaparral on the north-facing slope because greater leaf and stem area has developed.  相似文献

Lower Nahal Oren in Northern Israel, often referred to as 'Evolution Canyon', has been proposed as a microscale model site for ecological evolution. However, conflicting stress resistance and mating assay results contribute to controversy over the Nahal Oren model. In this study, we further tested the Nahal Oren model, while extending its focus from Drosophila melanogaster to its sister species, Drosophila simulans. Using fly populations derived from the opposing canyon slopes and acclimated to laboratory conditions for 11-22 generations, we did not find a significant slope effect on desiccation resistance (P = 0.96) or body metabolic fuel content (P > 0.43), which would indicate a genetic basis for adaptation to local resource limitation. Multiple-choice mating assays (47-48% homotypic couples in two replicate populations) did not indicate divergence from a random mating pattern between north- and south-facing slope flies. In conclusion, our findings do not support divergence of D. simulans populations across Lower Nahal Oren.  相似文献

Increasing rates of forest disturbance may provide greater opportunity for invasion of nonnative species, thereby altering the successional trajectory of native plant communities. In the eastern U.S., invasive Ailanthus altissima and native Liriodendron tulipifera have similar life histories and niches and often co-occur. To examine how disturbance affects the establishment of these species, we performed field experiments to evaluate the response of sown seeds and transplanted seedlings to three levels of disturbance on north- and south-facing aspects. L.␣tulipifera germination was severely limited by low seed viability and had significantly lower germination than A. altissima in all sites. The effect of disturbance regime on A. altissima germination depended on aspect in the second growing season. In contrast, mean seedling survival, biomass, leaf area and leaf area ratio were greater for L. tulipifera in all field sites. Overall, the north-facing selective cut forest provided a disproportionately large number of suitable microsites for L. tulipifera establishment. Collectively, this study demonstrated that different timber harvest practices produce heterogeneous mosaics of suitable microsites for germination and establishment. Limited L. tulipifera germination may be a serious constraint to population establishment if seeds are deposited for the first time immediately after a disturbance event. However, if sufficient viable seeds of both species exist, L. tulipifera out-performs the invasive in the first two years following disturbance. This may explain why A. altissima has shown explosive population growth in a limited number of sites in the past century.  相似文献

'Evolution Canyon' on Mount Carmel, Israel, displays highly contrasting physical and biotic environments on a micro-geographic scale, and is a natural laboratory for investigating genetic responses to variable and extreme environments across species. Samples of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans were collected from three sites each on the north- and south-facing slopes of the canyon along altitudinal transects, and one site on the valley floor. Numbers of abdominal and sternopleural sensory bristles were recorded for each of these subpopulations in three thermal environments. In D. simulans, sternopleural bristle number exhibited micro-geographic differentiation between the north- and south-facing slopes, while abdominal bristle number was stable across subpopulations. In D. melanogaster, the magnitudes of the difference in mean sternopleural bristle number between the north- and south-facing slopes and of mean abdominal bristle number along the altitudinal gradients were both conditional on rearing temperature. Thus, the pattern of genetic variation between sites was consistent with underlying heterogeneity of genetic mechanisms for response to the same environmental gradients between traits and sibling species. In contrast, the genetic architecture of bristle number at the level of variation within populations was very similar between species for the same bristle trait, although the two traits differed in the relative contribution of genotype by temperature and genotype by sex interaction.  相似文献
