Diversity in phosphorus (P) acquisition strategies was assessed among eight isolates of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) belonging to three Glomus species, all obtained from the same field site. Maize (Zea mays L. cv. Corso) was used as a test plant. Compartmented cultivation containers coupled with 33P radioisotope labeling of soil P were employed to estimate (1) the distance from the roots that AMF were able to acquire soil P from, (2) the rate of soil colonization, (3) the efficiency of uptake of soil P by AMF, (4) benefits provided to maize in terms of P acquisition and growth. Glomus mosseae and G. intraradices took up P 10 cm from roots, whereas G. claroideum only up to 6 cm from the roots. G. mosseae most rapidly colonized the available soil volume and transported significant amounts of P to maize from a distance, but provided no net P uptake benefit to the plants. On the other hand, both G. intraradices and three out of four G. claroideum isolates significantly improved net P uptake by maize. These effects seem to be related to variability between and to a limited extent also within AMF species, in mycelium development, efficiency of hyphal P uptake and effects on plant P acquisition via the root pathway. In spite of absence of maize growth responses to inoculation with any of the AMF isolates, this study indicates remarkable functional diversity in the underground component of the studied field site.  相似文献

In order to evaluate host plant performance relative to different soil arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities, Andropogon gerardii seedlings were grown with nine different AMF communities. The communities consisted of 0, 10, or 20 spores of Glomus etunicatum and 0, 10, or 20 spores of Glomus intraradices in all possible combinations. Spores were produced by fungal cultures originating on A. gerardii in a serpentine plant community; seeds of A. gerardii were collected at the same site. The experiment was performed in the greenhouse using a mixture of sterilized serpentine soil and sand to which naturally occurring non-mycorrhizal microbes were added. There was no difference in root AMF colonization rates between single species communities of either G. etunicatum or G. intraradices, but G. intraradices enhanced plant growth and G. etunicatum did not. However, plants grew larger with some combinations of G.␣intraradices plus G. etunicatum than with the same quantity of G. intraradices alone. These results suggest the potential for niche complementarity in the mycorrhizal fungi. That G. etunicatum only increased plant growth in the presence of G. intraradices could be illustrative of why AMF that appear to be parasitic or benign when examined in isolation are maintained within multi-species mycorrhizal communities in nature.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to study the influence of three Glomus species—Glomus mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe, Glomus intraradices (Schenck and Smith) and Glomus deserticola (Trappe, Bloss, and Menge)—on the development of Verticillium-induced wilt in Capsicum annuum cv. Piquillo. Results showed that the effectiveness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as biocontrol agents varied among different Glomus species. In pepper colonized by G. intraradices the severity of the disease was even higher than that observed in non-mycorrhizal plants in terms of plant growth and pepper yield. On the other hand, the high effectiveness exhibited by G. mosseae in improving plant growth and the early beginning of the reproductive stage in these plants was not associated with great plant protection and high pepper yield in diseased plants. Only plants associated with G. deserticola had greater yield than non-mycorrhizal ones despite the lower P fertilization applied to the mycorrhizal treatment and this fact was observed in both healthy and diseased plants. It is suggested that the higher specific phosphorus uptake in Verticillium-inoculated plants associated with G. deserticola could contribute to diminish the deleterious effect of pathogen on yield. On the other hand, the possible influence of endogenous phenolics in roots on the tolerance or resistance of pepper against wilt induced by Verticillium dahliae remains unclear.  相似文献

The effects of 17 Paenibacillus strains on root colonization by Glomus intraradices or Glomus mosseae and plant growth parameters (shoot and root weight) of mycorrhizal cucumber plants were examined. The Paenibacillus strains were originally isolated from mycorrhizal (G. intraradices) and non-mycorrhizal cucumber rhizosphere and/or hyphosphere, except for strain EJP73, which originated from a Pinus sylvestris-Lactarius rufus ectomycorrhiza. Root colonization of cucumber plants by G. intraradices or G. mosseae was unaffected by all seven strains of Paenibacillus polymyxa, but was decreased or increased by four strains of Paenibacillus macerans and strain EJP73 of Paenibacillus sp. Overall, shoot dry weight of cucumber grown in symbioses with either G intraradices or G. mosseae was unaffected by inoculation with all of the Paenibacillus strains, except for strain MB02-429 of P. macerans, which increased the shoot dry weight in the cucumber-G. mosseae symbiosis. On the other hand, several Paenibacillus strains caused altered root growth. Three strains of P. polymyxa and four strains of P. macerans increased the root fresh weight of the cucumber–G. intraradices symbiosis, whereas three strains of P. polymyxa and one strain of P. macerans as well as Paenibacillus sp. EJP73, decreased the root fresh weight of the cucumber–G. mosseae symbiosis. In conclusion, our results show that bacteria from several species of Paenibacillus differentially affect cucumber mycorrhizas.  相似文献

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Glomus monosporum, G. vesiculiferum, G. deserticola, G. intraradices, G. mosseae, and two unidentified species were tested to determine their effect on plant growth and fruit production of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. Trust inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) under near-commercial greenhouse conditions. Inoculation with G. monosporum and G. mosseae significantly increased fruit yield and fruit number of tomato plants grown hydroponically in sawdust. Plant height and plant dry weight increased significantly when inoculated with G. monosporum and G. mosseae. Further, plants inoculated with G. monosporum and G. mosseae showed significantly lower FORL root infection than the untreated control plants.  相似文献

In this paper we demonstrate a UV-B-mediated link between host plants, herbivores and their parasitoids, using a model system consisting of a host plant Brassica oleracea, a herbivore Plutella xylostella and its parasitoid Cotesia plutellae. Ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) is a potent elicitor of a variety of changes in the chemistry, morphology and physiology of plants and animals. Recent studies have demonstrated that common signals, such as jasmonic acid (JA), play important roles in the mechanisms by which plants respond to UV-B and to damage by herbivores. Plant responses elicited by UV-B radiation can affect the choices of ovipositing female insects and the fitness of their offspring. This leads to the prediction that, in plants, the changes induced as a consequence of UV damage will be similar to those elicited in response to insect damage, including knock-on effects upon the next trophic level, predators. In our trials female P. xylostella oviposited preferentially on host plants grown in depleted UV-B conditions, while their larvae preferred to feed on tissues from UV-depleted regimes over those from UV-supplemented ones. Larval feeding patterns on UV-supplemented tissues met the predictions of models which propose that induced defences in plants should disperse herbivory; feeding scars were significantly smaller and more numerous – though not significantly so – than those on host plant leaves grown in UV-depleted conditions. Most importantly, female parasitoids also showed a clear pattern of preference when given the choice between host plants and attendant larvae from the different UV regimes; however, in the case of the female parasitoids, the choice was in favour of potential hosts foraging on UV-supplemented tissues. This study demonstrates the potential for UV-B to elicit a variety of interactions between trophic levels, most likely mediated through effects upon host plant chemistry.

It is widely recognized that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improve plant growth and nutrient conditions, but their effects can vary from negative to positive depending on AMF species. Since the performance of herbivorous arthropods varies with plant quality, different AMF species should differently affect the density of herbivorous arthropods on plants and the herbivore-induced plant responses. We examined the indirect effects of AMF on the number of spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) and the number of damaged leaves in an outdoor glass-chamber experiment, using Lotus japonicus plants inoculated with one of four different AMF species (Gigaspora margarita, Glomus etunicatum, Gl. intraradices, and Acaulospora longula). Plants with Gi. margarita and A. longula had significantly fewer female mites than plants with Gl. etunicatum and Gl. intraradices, and plants with Gi. margarita had the fewest damaged leaves, followed by plants with A. longula, Gl. intraradices, and Gl. etunicatum. To examine species-specific effects of AMF on herbivore-induced plant responses, we carried out a bioassay with eggs laid by spider mites, and analyses of leaf chemicals (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and total phenolics) using plants subjected or not subjected to herbivory. The bioassay showed that mite egg production and its changes following mite herbivory changed depending on the AMF species. In addition, Principal component analysis for leaf chemicals revealed not only mite-induced changes in leaf chemical composition, but also AMF effects on the herbivore-induced response in a species-specific way. Thus, we need to pay more attention to the species identity of AMF as an important factor in determining the strength of effects of belowground AMF on the performance and/or preferences of aboveground herbivores.  相似文献

A field survey of the arbuscular mycorrhizal status of herbaceous plant species was conducted in a highly alkaline anthropogenic sediment resulting from the disposal of waste from an acetylene and polyvinyl chloride factory. Most plant species found at the site were mycorrhizal and the dominant mycotrophic plant species was Conyza bilbaoana. Fungal species richness was assessed by identification of spores extracted from the sediment and from continuously propagated trap pot cultures. All of the six species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) found were from the genus Glomus. Glomus intraradices and G. mosseae were found in field-collected sediment samples and also occurred most frequently in trap cultures. To test the symbiotic effectiveness of these two fungi, seedlings of C. bilbaoana were inoculated with either native G. intraradices BEG163 or G. mosseae BEG198 and non-native G. intraradices BEG75 or G. mosseae BEG25 isolates in sterile and non-sterile sediment collected from the study site. All four isolates were able to colonise C. bilbaoana. However, AMF native to the target sediments were generally more effective than the non-native fungi in promoting plant establishment and growth under highly alkaline conditions. The non-native G. intraradices was, however, more effective than the non-native G. mosseae. The results of this study suggest the use of adapted AMF as inoculants for phytorestoration of alkaline anthropogenic-stressed sediments.  相似文献

We studied the role of modification in root exudation induced by colonization with Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae in the growth of Phytophthora nicotianae in tomato roots. Plants were grown in a compartmentalized plant growth system and were either inoculated with the AM fungi or received exudates from mycorrhizal plants, with the corresponding controls. Three weeks after planting, the plants were inoculated or not with P. nicotianae growing from an adjacent compartment. At harvest, P. nicotianae biomass was significantly reduced in roots colonized with G. intraradices or G. mosseae in comparison to non-colonized roots. Conversely, pathogen biomass was similar in non-colonized roots supplied with exudates collected from mycorrhizal or non-mycorrhizal roots, or with water. We cannot rule out that a mycorrhiza-mediated modification in root exudation may take place, but our results did not support that a change in pathogen chemotactic responses to host root exudates may be involved in the inhibition of P. nicotianae.  相似文献

Cucumber plants were treated with plant growth promoting fungi (PGPF), Phoma sp. (isolates GS8-2 and GS8-3) and Penicillium simplicissimum (isolate GP17-2) with or without the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus mosseae. Induction of systemic resistance in cucumber against the anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare was tested to evaluate the nature of the interaction between the PGPF and AMF. Root colonizing ability of each fungal species as influenced by their interaction was also evaluated. Plant roots were pre-inoculated with each PGPF isolate and/or G. mosseae for four weeks and leaves were then challenge inoculated with the pathogen C. orbiculare. Plants treated with each PGPF isolate showed considerable protection against the disease, but the treatment of G. mosseae had no significant effect on disease development. However, combined inoculation of Phoma GS8-2 or GS8-3 with G. mosseae reduced the level of disease protection induced by single inoculation of each Phoma isolate. In contrast, the high levels of protection induced by the P. simplicissimum GP17-2 were not altered by combining it with G. mosseae. Root colonization of both Phoma sp. isolates was also suppressed by the presence of the G. mosseae, but such an effect was not found on the population development of P. simplicissimum. The percent cucumber root length colonized by G. mosseae was not affected by any of the PGPF isolates tested.  相似文献

The effects of Glomus mosseae and Paecilomyces lilacinus on Meloidogyne javanica of tomato were tested in a greenhouse experiment. Chicken layer manure was used as a carrier substrate for the inoculum of P. lilacinus. The following parameters were used: gall index, average number of galls per root system, plant height, shoot and root weights. Inoculation of tomato plants with G. mosseae did not markedly increase the growth of infected plants with M. javanica. Inoculation of plants with G. mosseae and P. lilacinus together or separately resulted in similar shoots and plant heights. The highest root development was achieved when mycorrhizal plants were inoculated with P. lilacinus to control root-knot nematode. Inoculation of tomato plants with G. mosseae suppressed gall index and the average number of galls per root system by 52% and 66%, respectively, compared with seedlings inoculated with M. javanica alone. Biological control with both G. mosseae and P. lilacinus together or separately in the presence of layer manure completely inhibited root infection with M. javanica. Mycorrhizal colonization was not affected by the layer manure treatment or by root inoculation with P. lilacinus. Addition of layer manure had a beneficial effect on plant growth and reduced M. javanica infection.

We studied a specialist parasitoid (Coccobius fulvus Compere et Annecke; Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), its host (the arrowhead scale, Unaspis yanonensis Kuwana; Hemiptera: Diaspididae) and the host plant (Citrus unshiu Marc; Rutaceae) to examine the indirect effects, via host–parasitoid interactions, of the parasitoid on plant biomass. We compared plant biomass and herbivore abundance in a system of two trophic levels (plants and herbivores) with a system of three trophic levels (plants, herbivores and parasitoids) using enclosure experiments in an agricultural setting. Each of eight young Citrus trees was infested with 40 scales and placed in an enclosure. We introduced three female parasitoids into half of the enclosures and monitored temporal changes in scale density and cumulative parasitism for the subsequent 11months. Plant biomass was then compared between treatment groups (parasitoids added) and controls (parasitoids excluded). During the experiment, cumulative parasitism increased rapidly in the parasitoid-addition enclosures to a maximum of 89%, and the number of live scales in the control enclosures was approximately 10-fold that in the treatment enclosures. At the end of the experiment, plant biomass was threefold higher in the parasitoid-addition enclosures than in the control enclosures. These results have two implications for terrestrial communities. First, specialist parasitoids, which are the principal natural enemies of most herbivorous insects, can trigger trophic cascades in the same way that generalist predators can. Second, cascading effects can be detected by observing changes in plant biomass. The latter finding is contrary to recent conclusions about top-down cascades (i.e. that trophic cascades are less likely to be observed when plant biomass, rather than plant damage, is considered as the plant-response variable).  相似文献

Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John’s-wort, Hypericaceae) is a valuable medicinal plant species cultivated for pharmaceutical purposes. Although the chemical composition and pharmacological activities of H. perforatum have been well studied, no data are available concerning the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on this important herb. A laboratory experiment was therefore conducted in order to test three AMF inocula on H. perforatum with a view to show whether AMF could influence plant vitality (biomass and photosynthetic activity) and the production of the most valuable secondary metabolites, namely anthraquinone derivatives (hypericin and pseudohypericin) as well as the prenylated phloroglucinol—hyperforin. The following treatments were prepared: (1) control—sterile soil without AMF inoculation, (2) Rhizophagus intraradices (syn. Glomus intraradices), (3) Funneliformis mosseae (syn. Glomus mosseae), and (4) an AMF Mix which contained: Funneliformis constrictum (syn. Glomus constrictum), Funneliformis geosporum (syn. Glomus geosporum), F. mosseae, and R. intraradices. The application of R. intraradices inoculum resulted in the highest mycorrhizal colonization, whereas the lowest values of mycorrhizal parameters were detected in the AMF Mix. There were no statistically significant differences in H. perforatum shoot mass in any of the treatments. However, we found AMF species specificity in the stimulation of H. perforatum photosynthetic activity and the production of secondary metabolites. Inoculation with the AMF Mix resulted in higher photosynthetic performance index (PItotal) values in comparison to all the other treatments. The plants inoculated with R. intraradices and the AMF Mix were characterized by a higher concentration of hypericin and pseudohypericin in the shoots. However, no differences in the content of these metabolites were detected after the application of F. mosseae. In the case of hyperforin, no significant differences were found between the control plants and those inoculated with any of the AMF applied. The enhanced content of anthraquinone derivatives and, at the same time, better plant vitality suggest that the improved production of these metabolites was a result of the positive effect of the applied AMF strains on H. perforatum. This could be due to improved mineral nutrition or to AMF-induced changes in the phytohormonal balance. Our results are promising from the biotechnological point of view, i.e. the future inoculation of H. perforatum with AMF in order to improve the quality of medicinal plant raw material obtained from cultivation.  相似文献

Six species of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (Glomus aggregatum, G. clarum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices, G. mosseae and G. versiforme) were evaluated, in three greenhouse experiments, for their effects on reproduction of the root-lesion nematode, Pratylenchus penetrans, and growth of Ottawa 3 apple rootstock. Glomus mosseae increased total dry weights of nematode-inoculated and non-inoculated rootstock in all three greenhouse experiments, and G. intraradices increased dry weights in two of three greenhouse experiments. Plants inoculated with G. mosseae generally supported fewer P. penetrans per gram of root than plants inoculated with other AM fungi, but did not differ significantly from the controls in any greenhouse experiment. Colonization of roots by AM fungi was reduced by P. penetrans at initial inoculum densities greater than 250 nematodes/L soil. In field trials, preplant inoculation with either G. intraradices or G. mosseae increased rootstock growth and leaf concentrations of P, Mg, Zn and Cu in fumigated plots but not in non-fumigated plots, indicating that colonization by native AM fungi in non-fumigated plots may have been sufficient for adequate nutrient acquisition. The abundance of vesicles and arbuscules was greater in roots of plants inoculated with AM fungi before planting than in roots of non-inoculated plants, in both fumigated and non-fumigated plots. P. penetrans per gram of root and per 50 ml soil were significantly lower for G. mosseae- inoculated plants than for non-inoculated plants in fumigated soil but not in non-fumigated soil.  相似文献

The co-existence of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) species, Glomus intraradices and Glomus claroideum, in the root systems of plants was investigated in a greenhouse experiment aimed at reconstructing interactions during an early stage of primary succession on a coal-mine spoil bank in Central Europe. Two plant species, Tripleurospermum inodorum and Calamagrostis epigejos, were inoculated either with one or both AMF species. Fungal development, determined by trypan blue and alkaline phosphatase staining as well as by PCR amplification of rRNA genes with species-specific primers, and the expression of five genes with different metabolic functions in the intraradical structures of G. intraradices were followed after 6 and 9 weeks of cultivation. The two AMF closely co-existed in the root systems of both plants possibly through similar colonisation rates and competitivity. Inoculation with the two fungi, however, did not bring any additional benefit to the host plants in comparison with single inoculation; moreover, plant growth depression observed after inoculation with G. claroideum persisted also in mixed inoculation. The expression of all the assayed G. intraradices genes was affected either by host plant or by co-inoculation with G. claroideum. The effects of both factors depended on the time of sampling, which underlines the importance of addressing this topic in time-course studies.  相似文献

The present study on efficacy of different Glomus species, an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus (G. aggregatum, G. fasciculatum, G. mosseae, G. intraradices) on various growth parameters such as biomass, macro and micronutrients, chlorophyll, protein, cytokinin and alkaloid content and phosphatase activity of pink flowered Catharanthus roseus plants showed that all Glomus species except G. intraradices enhanced the chlorophyll, protein, crude alkaloid, phosphorus, sulphur, manganese and copper contents of C. roseus plants along with phosphatase activity significantly over uninoculated plants. However only G. mosseae and G. fasciculatum exhibited superior symbiotic relationship with the plant. G. mosseae was found to be the best for increasing the crude alkaloid content (8.19%) in leaf and also in increasing the quantity of important alkaloids vincristine and vinblastine.  相似文献

The effects of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus mosseae and G. claroideum) and a pathogenic fungus (Pythium ultimum) on the production of eight flavonoids in roots of two white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars were evaluated. Quantification of AM and pathogenic fungi in the roots showed that the AM symbiosis significantly reduced P. ultimum biomass and in some cases prevented infection. The flavonoid productions in clover roots varied depending on the presence of beneficial and/or pathogenic fungi, fungal isolate or plant cultivar. Only plants colonized with G. claroideum showed detectable concentrations of either coumestrol or kaempferol (cultivar-dependant). In addition, inoculation with G. claroideum resulted in significantly higher concentrations of coumestrol in cv. Sonja and medicarpin in cv. Milo. A low production of coumestrol and kaempferol in mycorrhizal plants may be G. mosseae-specific. Only the concentrations of formononetin and daidzein increased in clover roots in response to infection with P. ultimum. These flavonoids are supposedly stress metabolites, synthesized or produced from glycosides in response to pathogen infection. However, the presence of one or both AMF significantly lowered the formononetin and daidzein concentrations, and overruled the inductive effect of P. ultimum. Therefore the antagonistic action of AM against the pathogen must take place through another mechanism.  相似文献
